Resumen
Reconstructing a Jewish town. Nils Roemer: German City, Jewish Memory. The Story of Worms. Waltham, Brandeis University Press, 2010, pp. 316. Michael Meng: Shattered Spaces. Encountering Jewish Ruins in Postwar Germany and Poland. Cambridge, Harvard University Press, 2011, pp. 351. The text briefly compares two books: Nils Roemer’s German City, Jewish Memory. The Story of Worms and Michael Meng’s Shattered Spaces. Encountering Jewish Ruins in Postwar Germany and Poland. Both represent fascinating approaches to the process of the reconstruction of the Jewish identity as an important part of the European urban culture destroyed during WWII. By discussing these issues on the examples of Worms (Roemer) and Warsaw, Wrocław, Potsdam, Berlin (Meng) both, albeit in different ways, restore the Jewish identity of these cities not only by approaching the history of historical or architectural landmarks, but also by discussing some less material, discoursive memory markers such as mythology, tourism, politics etc.

Resumen
POTSDAMER PLATZThe city square has been the organising centre for urban development in the western world, but the history of Berlin can be told as a quest narrative, the search for such an organising centre. This article tells the story of Potsdamer Platz, which can be viewed as the centre of the Prussian (and later German) capital. In the age of the Baroque Potsdamer Platz was connected to one of the new geometrical squares (an Octogon), which emphasised the aristocratic order. In the age of Romanticism the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel used it in his efforts to reshape the city as a panoramic cityscape. In the Weimar Republic Potsdamer Platz gained a mythical status. It became the symbol of Berlin as a “world city”; and writers, painters and filmmakers excelled in artistic comments on this symbol. The Wall put an end to the glorious history of this “heart of Berlin”, but shortly after 1989 planners and politicians embarked on a project to make the city’s heart beat once again. In the age of Postmodernism, however, the city square has become a history of making exteriors into interiors, of replacing the physical space by mediated space, of “Disneyfication”; and as this article shows, this tendency also characterises the new and renewed Potsdamer Platz.

Resumen
In March 1945, the combined Polish-Soviet forces captured the German city of Stettin. On 26 April, the 65th Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front entered the city, in which the rule of the Soviet military command was soon established. Due to its unresolved status and territorial disputes, Polish politicians, self-government officials, and first settlers were forced to leave Szczecin twice. In the period of the Polish-German “race for Szczecin”, which ended with the Potsdam Conference, the only stable element having control over the lower Oder was the USSR, whose emissaries treated the conquered territories as if they already belonged to their communist state. As early as in 1945, the Polish civil authorities came up with an idea to erect a memorial dedicated to the “democratic armies”. The competition for the Red Army Gratitude Memorial was officially launched in Spring 1949, once the USSR-born doctrine of socialist realism was introduced to Poland. Out of twenty-two submission, the first award was given to Józef Starzyński from Zakopane, a former citizen of Lvov. The commemorative complex located at the Polish Soldier’s Square was completed in April 1950. The aim of the present paper is to analyse the very memorial which remained in Szczecin until 2017. Of special importance to my investigation are: the geographical context of Western Pomerania considered one of the Reclaimed Territories and in a feudal relationship with the historical regions of the Republic of Poland, as well as with the Russian “Seigneur”/”Lord”; the topographical context, namely the act of re-building the former German city destroyed in warfare; as well as the biographical context, i.e. the life of the monument’s designer. The paper takes special interest in the formal and ideological links between the Szczecin memorial and one of Starzyński’s earlier projects, namely the Sacred Heart of Jesus Gratitude Memorial in Poznań (1927; a competition submission; never erected). A careful reconstruction of the memorials’ history will offer a valuable case study which showcases the 20th-century sculptor in a politically-charged environment.

Resumen
In November 1993, more than fifty years after patrons of the popularCafé Josty on the famed Potsdamer Platz in Berlin came to enjoy agood cup of coffee and a piece of cake, or smoke a rare fine cigarbefore the bombs would raze the café to the ground, a hydraulic excavator’sbucket stopped in mid-air and miraculously saved five whiteporcelain cups with the initials CJ engraved upon each one in red.The delicate cups had rested under no more than ten feet of loose soiland rubble near the place where the café’s basement had been. Thebombs that fell on the Potsdamer Platz between 1943 and May 1945and a scoop by an excavator bucket bookend a series of perilous situationsthe cups survived. The East German regime sent tanks acrossthe square during the uprising in June of 1953, and the wall separatingBerlin was built right through the middle of it in August of 1961.After lying dormant and overgrown with weeds for many of its subsequentthirty years, the Potsdamer Platz was finally all but leveled; theWeinhaus Huth was the only building that escaped the dynamite andwrecker ball. The swing of the wrecking ball made room for the mostcontroversial construction project in recent German history: the citywithin-a-city Daimler-Benz would build on the Potsdamer Platz.

Resumen
The Arctic provides one of the most striking signatures of climate change impacts. Accelerated loss of sea ice extent and thickness, loss in biodiversity, changing atmospheric circulation patterns, and melting permafrost portray only a few aspects of a rapidly changing Arctic. In recognition of the inter-, multi-, and trans-disciplinary (Keil 2015) discussions, tools, mechanisms, and implementation strategies necessary to address these challenging and pervasive issues of this century, the first Potsdam Summer School, entitled ‘Arctic in the Anthropocene’, took place in June–July, 2014. The summer school was coordinated by the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), and the University of Potsdam, in conjunction with the city of Potsdam. The principal vision of the summer school was to eliminate disciplinary language barriers, and to foster communication amongst individuals trained in law and international relations, public health, and science, with the goal of extending an integrated science-policy dialogue for the benefit of humanity, the planet that we inhabit, and for which we share a collective responsibility.

Resumen
There are two unreconciled interpretations for the age and character of the boundary separating the Cambrian–Ordovician Potsdam and Beekmantown groups that underlie the Ottawa Embayment in eastern Ontario. These stratal groups consist of interior facies of the central Laurentian Platform. As exposed in the type section of the Nepean Formation (upper Potsdam Group), located in the City of Ottawa, the boundary was previously interpreted to be conformable and of Early Ordovician age. This intepretation was of enormous impact on subsequent regional geology compilations that showed a diachronous boundary across the platform interior. From recent subsurface analysis across eastern Ontario, the contact was interpreted to be disconformable, a sequence boundary separating Late Cambrian and Early Ordovician strata. This paper reexamines the type section. Lithologically, the group boundary should be repositioned downsection by ~1.5 m. The contact now lies coincident with a disconformity that has a paleorelief of < 10 cm. The proposed revision is geologically significant. Previous collections of Early Ordovician conodonts from the type section, used to define the age of what had been interpreted to be upper Potsdam strata, now fall entirely within the lower Beekmantown Group. Nepean (Potsdam) strata exposed in the type section remain undated. Regional correlation of the disconformity across the Laurentian platform suggests that Nepean strata at the type section are likely of Late Cambrian age. There now exists a regionally coherent separation of Cambrian and Ordovician sedimentation patterns in the Ottawa Embayment.

Resumen
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the governance of regeneration projects, as part of the pan-German Social City initiative, examine the key actors engaged in delivery of renewal, and set out findings, before mapping the actors and governance models in regeneration in the area. Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws upon the paradigm of governance to illustrate actors in regeneration, about which little has been written thus far. The paper draws upon interviews with these actors in Potsdam and uses the policy networks approach to examine where power, resources and function are allocated among the actors in renewal. Findings – Though the community actor is an important conduit between the private sector and tiers of governance, in Potsdam the funding focus comes from private individuals and business, there is less scope for the community to act as manager of projects in renewal. Originality/value – The role of community managers can be compared to other subnational, national or global regeneration programmes. In examining the strengths and weaknesses of this model, the findings are of value in comparable cases as well as to policy makers and practitioners. The role of communities in working with business and government can be replicated and learnt from in other cases.

Resumen
In january 2013, I travelled with my studio to Israel. This project is a collection of what I experienced on our journey through the country, and the thoughts it evoked. It is also a collection of symbols and metaphors found in the areas we visited.   Tel Aviv is widely known as the “White City”. According to the myth, it rose out of the dunes of sand as a new Hebrew city. However, deeper investigation reveals that a part of the municipality is established on the post-Nakba ruins of the former village Manshiya. This village was almost totally erased, partly for political reasons.   The project is an exploration into the story of erasure, and an attempt to evoke the traces of what once was there.  I have proposed an underground structure hidden in sand. The objective is not to present a final answer, but to contribute to an ongoing discussion of who is the winner or loser in the writing of history, and what role architecture has in this battle.

Resumen
The purpose of this study was to document the history of the development of the Manassas Park City School system. This study utilized historical research methods to preserve information that would otherwise be lost. This was a study of local school history. It looked at how and why the school division began and how it has changed over time. It provides an understanding of how the school division evolved into its present state. This study examined the political, social and economic history of Manassas Park City Schools and the forces which influenced and shaped the school division. The study concentrated on political leaders, the residents who lived and worked in the city, and the financial difficulties experienced by the school division. This study relied on historical research methods to document the history of the school division. Data for the study came from both primary and secondary source materials. Sources included letters, notebooks, memoranda, official papers and documents, reports, official minutes, newspaper articles, letters to the editor and editorials, and pamphlets. A major source for the study was interviews of the key individuals who had first hand information worth preserving.

Resumen
My dissertation concerns the networks of production of early modern books of city views. Its focus is the emerging national and regional identities of the makers of the views in Sebastian Münster’s Cosmographia (1544-1628) and competing French city books from the same period. To study the networks I have adopted an interdisciplinary approach that aims to give a measured attention to all individuals involved in the production of the views (cosmographers, patrons, artists, draftsmen, woodcutters, printers). I analyze (1) national myths to which patrons and artists aligned their views, (2) patrons’ depiction of territory and genealogy in their views, (3) national symbols depicted on the views by draftsmen and woodcutters, and (4) draftsmen’s intentional application of “Deutsch” [German] or “Welsch” [French/Italian] styles. Finally, I have mapped views of the all editions of the city books in GIS, in order to visualize and analyze their networks of production over time. It emerges from this inquiry that a necessary condition for the collaborative production of books of city views was the alignment of the diverse interests (scientific, political, dynastic, economic, artistic) of all parties involved along a single unified goal, here the production of a shared national identity.

The M.A. thesis analyses the church policy of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany on a regional level in the first half of the 1960s. The paper investigates how the administrative body of the state and the party in the Bezirk (district) Potsdam dealt with the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg, how they implemented central decisions and which problems occurred. With implementation of socialism in the GDR and securing their own power the Socialist Unity Party had its adversary in the Protestant church as one of the biggest social organizations. After hard repressions in the 1950s the Socialist Unity Party changed its strategy around 1960/61 to eliminate the influence of the protestant church on society. Christians from now on were supposed to be integrated in society and to be convinced of socialism. The paper focuses on the principles of church policy of the Socialist Unity Party and the Protestant Church, and investigates the implementation of the new persuasion strategy in the Bezirk Potsdam. Structures of church policy, protagonists and methods will be analysed on basis of documents from the Rat des Bezirkes (council) and the party leadership of the Bezirk. At the beginning of the 1960s the church policy of the regional districts in the GDR was meant to be more systematic and continuous as before. In a “mentoring” system all pastors, church staff and committed laypersons were registered in order to convince them of socialism in regular talks, in case of need with financial incentives. However, concerning implementation demands and reality diverged immensely. Staff shortage, lacking willingness and qualification of the staff, but also due to the pastors’ resistance the administrative body of state and party in the Bezirk Potsdam could only deal with administration and the observation of church matters. That the persuasion system had enormous obstacles became obvious when in 1966 the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg elected the leader of the EKD, Kurt Scharf, as their bishop.

Resumen
In the wake of the Mexican Revolution, the new State sought to reinvigorate and civilize Mexico City through a series of urban reforms and public works. This dissertation focuses on the intersection of revolutionary reform and the formation of urban space by asking how revolutionary leaders -concerned about acceptable roles for women--envisioned a new city, and how women of different social classes contested these ideas. Through a study of performance and visual culture, I analyze the depiction and concern over "public women," to understand larger debates about gender and urbanization in Mexico City during the 1920s and 1930s.After World War I, a global ideal of the New Woman emerged through which women claimed both political and social mobility. This ideology was articulated through a radically different aesthetic of femininity that postulated a new way of discerning physical beauty. The Deco body, as I call this phenomenon, marked a shift from the ideal of full-figured female bodies to the sleek, elongated lines that dominated nascent fashion and beauty industries, populated the pages of the city's popular magazines, and structured the imagined metropolis, a city where modernity literally was seen and debated in terms of acceptable forms of femininity. By looking at what and who constituted spectacle, I examine how the visibility and invisibility of women in public space influenced urban reform. The Revolution created some new spaces in which women could exercise agency, yet by the mid 1930s, this window of opportunity gradually closed. Despite large cross-class alliances, mobilization, and activism, women did not achieve either gender parity or the right to vote. Modern ideas of femininity ran up against the "cult of masculinity" that glorified war heroes as the quintessential Revolutionary Family. Gender issues occupied an ambiguous place in context of the reformist agenda of the new leadership that sought to return women to traditional roles of wife and mother. In contrast, the Deco bodies of the stage served to symbolize Mexico City's claim to modernity, bridged the gap between Indigenismo and Mestizaje, and paved the way for a mestizo modernity.

When the documentary bases are photographs it is possible to carefully model the recorded elements using photogrammetry techniques based on 3D primitives, so that by means of an immersive navigation limited to certain points of view, an appearance of acceptable tridimensionality is obtained, where only isolated images of dispersed frames are available. The virtual recreation can be completed increasing its realistic appearance through its edition with animations of objects (for example, carriages) and characters, texts, musical setting, etc. The results can be presented in formats such as video or navigation through virtual reality helmets. From a selection of the first historical photographs of the Plaza de la Virgen, that we have obtained searching in several documentary sources, our multidisciplinary team is interested in a reliable, realistic and pleasant presentation of the urban environment of one of the most representative places in the city of Valencia, whose spatial configuration has changed significantly over the years. Resumen
This summary reviews evidence on the urban flooding impact, risk factors, and management and mitigation measures in Lagos and other cities in Nigeria. Flooding is a common problem every year in many cities across Nigeria, but the impacts of flooding are poorly documented. There is no consistent set of statistics at a national or sub-national level that can be used to compare the impacts of flooding across cities, and reports that focus on particular flood events are often incomplete. The literature notes the principal factors contributing to flood risk including uncontrolled urban growth, inadequate and poorly-maintained drainage systems, solid waste management practices, weakness in institutional capacity and coordination, and warning systems and public awareness. The evidence base for flood impacts, risks, and mitigation efforts at the city level in Nigeria is limited, and much of the information available is low quality, inconsistent, or outdated. Many rely on surveys of city residents rather than objective empirical data, and some of these surveys appear to be poorly designed. A significant number of the academic publications available have been published in non-mainstream journals without the usual level of academic peer review. Recent information is scarce, and a significant amount of the available evidence dates from 2011 and 2012, which coincides with an episode of nationwide flooding that was among the worst in Nigeria’s history.
