The current study examined the potential relationship between homelessness, gender, and occurrence of Post-Traumatic Distress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD. Drug abuse among persons who are homeless is complex and has causes on multiple levels. This article will detail key results of an ethnography in Atlanta, Georgia, conducted in 2011 and 2012 and focusing on how persons who are homeless recover from substance abuse. The study showed that childhood abuse, early exposure to drugs, and chronic pain created a drug use cycle of temporary relief and destabilization that resulted in continuing homelessness for participants.
