Texto completoThis paper deals with A. v. Humboldt’s visit to a metallurgical plant in the Ural mountains near Yekaterinburg during his Russian expedition of 1829. The source is a Russian report which has not yet been mentioned in the literature about A. v. Humboldt. After a tour of the plant, its director gave a dinner for Humboldt and his companions which was described vividly by a Russian eyewitness, I. A. Shmakov. This episode is typical of the circumstances under which Humboldt travelled in Russia and illustrates his interaction with his hosts.

Texto completoThe two attempts (1860 and 1872) to compile a bibliography of all works of Alexander von Humboldt have to be regarded as failures. Due to Humboldt’s scientific methods, the contemporary popularity of his writings, and the conditions of book publishing and selling, it has been difficult to achieve an overview of his œuvre. Thus each attempt to write a reliable or at least partially complete bibliography of Humboldt’s works constituted an adventure. Horst Fiedler and Ulrike Leitner have mastered this undertaking. As a result of their efforts over more than two decades, a bibliography of those works by Humboldt which were published in book form appeared in the year 2000.

Texto completoThis article presents a project for the digitization of the works of Alexander von Humboldt, which is being undertaken in collaboration with the Ignacio Larramendi Foundation. Like other projects of this type, its aim is to utilize modern technology to make a significant part of Humboldt’s legacy available to researchers and other readers, thereby facilitating the study and reading of these works. This project will focus on the Spanish translations that have been undertaken over the years. Humboldt’s works in their original French and German versions will subsequently be included alongside their respective Spanish translations. Finally, this edition will be accompanied by a comprehensive introduction devoted to the history of these Spanish translations and the impact they have had in Spain, as well as to the people who have dedicated themselves to the translation and dissemination of these works in this country.

Texto completoDuring July 1841 a meeting between two men takes place, which seems to have been extraneous, but turns out to be a significant historical incident. 71 year old natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt welcomes young Ludwig Leichhardt from Prussia in his office in Paris. The prospective young scientist expects help and references from famous Alexander von Humboldt. The conversation is short and ends from Leichhardt’s point of view without results. Unfortunately this is going to be the only meeting between the two scientists even though the two Prussians have more in common than their passion for the natural sciences. Way too seldomly have biographical analogy and geographical productivity of the two men been compared.

Helmreich, Christian. "Geschichte der Natur bei Alexander von Humboldt". Universität Potsdam, 2009. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2010/4257/.
Texto completoThis article analyses the importance of an historical view of nature in the works of Alexander von Humboldt. In several of his first writings, Humboldt seems to outline the importance of what one may call history of nature. But even before his famous American travel, his position changed and he became reluctant to accept the seriousness of historical enquiry in the area of natural sciences: if we want to reconstruct the past state of nature, we cannot rely on empirical proofs; and history of nature is therefore necessarily based on uncertain hypotheses. Humboldt kept his sceptical attitude in the first decades of the 19th century, despite the positive results of the palaeontological researches of his scientific colleagues. However, he gradually convinced himself of the scientific interest of historical investigations in the natural sciences. The Cosmos paradoxally displays two apparently conflicting points of view: in his methodological remarks, Humboldt maintains that precise accounts of the past state of nature are out of reach of human knowledge, yet elsewhere in the same Cosmos he gives broad and rather vivid descriptions of the eventful history of nature.

Texto completoIn the last 25 years, Alexander von Humboldt‘s popularity has radically changed in the german-speaking public opinion. Proof of this are not only television surveys about the most famous germans - in which Alexander von Humboldt now regularly figures - or television series about contemporary expeditions, which constantly refer to Humboldt‘s name; perhaps what most clearly verifies this change is the great success of Daniel Kehlmann‘s novel Die Vermessung der Welt. Without the recent developments outlined above, this novel‘s degree of impact would have been unimaginable. To study the great success of this text against this backdrop is not only attractive, but also revealing. What is Die Vermessung der Welt really about? And how can we explain the »Kehlmann phenomenon« from a greater distance?

Texto completoEven before he went to Freiberg (Saxony) to study with Abraham Gottlob Werner, Alexander von Humboldt had done research into geognosy and the science of salt making. The results were published in the book “Mineralogische Beobachtungen über einige Basalte am Rhein”, and in „Versuch über einige physikalische und chemische Grundsätze der Salzwerkskunde“ (1792). Humboldt’s first teachers in geognosy, J. F. Blumenbach and H. F. Link had an important impact on these early studies. Until 1795, 31% of Humboldt’s scientific work consisted of research into these fields. This paper argues that, due to Humboldt’s comprehensive knowledge of the literature on geognosy, the references to this field in Steven Jan van Geuns’s journal of a common trip along the river Rhine (1789) were directly influenced by Humboldt. Thus van Geuns’s diary contains Humboldt’s first statements on volcanism, the geognosy of basalts, and references to salt making.
Krumpel, Heinz. "Identität und Differenz : Goethes Faust und Alexander von Humboldt". Universität Potsdam, 2007. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2009/3581/.
Texto completoIn the article “Identity and difference between Goethes Faust and Alexander von Humboldt” the issue of how much Faust is contained in Humboldt and in which way Goethes Faust has to be related to Alexander von Humboldt is discussed. Here the connection of activity, knowledge and vision as well as the relationship between humans and nature are central to the examination. Goethe and Humboldt were greatly influenced by the enlightenment. Their ideas and visions show us today that modernity is an incomplete project. In Goethes Faust the question of the essence of mankind is posed because there is a hint of Faust and Mephisto in each human. With Humboldt those principles acted among other things as a driving force for greater productitivity and the extraction of knowledge. Even though Faust did not fail in his bet with Mephisto, on the other hand he also did not win. Humboldt, however, would have won the bet. Considering the global ecological crisis and regional conflicts today the idea of the relation of Goethe´s Faust and Humboldt has an astonishing relevance.

This paper seeks to interweave science formulated by Alexander von Humboldt with the names and extend the findings to the contemporary science that aims to overcome the crisis of reason then verified fragmentary. In this case, from references that indicate the Newtonian-Cartesian rationalism as no proponent of effective responses to a complex world in which the manifestations of reality accentuate their characters cross, evidenced works Frames of Nature and Cosmos as fruitful as corresponds to the prospects of a new science project guided in transdisciplinarity. Thus, these works show the arrangement between empirical fact and the human spirit to the constant process of spiral development of scientific knowledge. Mediating influences of Schelling, Goethe, Kant, Humboldt interweaves feeling and reason and evidence that aesthetic pleasures are responsible for the act of understanding a certain landscape. In addition, characterizes the role of art within the scientific formulations and expresses the need for simplicity and objectivity to the spread of contributions recorded by the human interpretation of the universe that surrounds us. At the turn of the twentieth century to century, authors such as Jean Piaget, Edgard Morin, Pierre Weil, Ubiratan D'Ambrosio, among others note that science in its practical and theoretical dimensions needs to be expanded to a sphere than fragmentary, make available the conjunction between human and physical facets of reality and willing their approaches so that they can consider knowledge in various cultural possibilities. Humboldt in the nineteenth century, composed his work explaining the extent of the relationship between man and the universe, seeking the conjunction of empirical factors from the organicist approach, tracing the historical understanding of reality through different cultural possibilities in various stages of civilization and organization of different societies. Through this bias creates a new scientific approach that some authors call a new "rationalism" that presents so transdisciplinary. From the investigation of the construction of modern thought and the conflict generated by the same romantic movement in Germany, the Prussian naturalist science project presents itself as a synthesis, figuring approaches from empirical measurements interpreted now by the manifestations of art guided the aesthetic pleasures. Thus, the junctures of the works discussed in this dissertation constitute a necessary contribution to the understanding and knowledge organization and holistic cross, a fact that confirms the contemporary texts of Alexander von Humboldt.

Colonial Expansion, Tropical Island Edens and Origins of Environmentalism, 1600-1860 (1995)behauptet wird.

Texto completoAlexander von Humboldt’s work displays traces of Johann Gottfried Herder which are as multifaceted as the references to the latter are scarce. In light of this aspect, the present essay focuses on Humboldt’s Physiognomy of Plants (1806), in which he explicitly mentions Herder for the first time in a publication. Two years later, the text is incorporated within Aspects of Nature (1808 ff.). In the third edition of Aspects (1849), Herder’s name is curiously omitted. This omission is incomprehensible both in form and content. The historical context characterising the years between 1805 and 1808 suggests that Humboldt’s references to Herder must have been made very deliberately. Humboldt’s correspondence with the historian Johannes von Müller and other sources shows that Humboldt carefully studied Herder’s writings. As the publisher of Herder’s complete works, Johannes von Müller, who was Humboldt’s friend and neighbour at the time, even considered Humboldt to be a direct descendant of the Herder school.

This study aims at identifying the challenges the translator may come across when working with a philosophical text and, more specifically, with the texts of Wilhelm von Humboldt. Firstly, a summary of his biography, some facts about his life as a translator and the diffusion of his texts in Brazil are presented. Then, a theoretical foundation on the amplitude and complexity of a translator’s task working with philosophical texts, given their embeddedness in historical-temporal, spatial and stylistic contexts, as well as the languages internal forms, is outlined. This is complemented by the theories of Walter Benjamin, Jonathan Rée, Roman Ingarden and other scholars about the translation of this textual typology, which shows that the translator’s main task is to make a reputable and successful translation guaranteeing the survival of the original. Finally, in the light of one of Humboldt's texts and his translation into Portuguese, the theories are applied, showing which challenges the translator finds at a historical, stylistic, lexical and syntactic level. Analysis leads to the conclusion that the task of translating philosophical texts is hampered by the complexity of a philosopher’s thought and language, as in the case of Wilhelm von Humboldt. The erudition of his ideas, the obscurity, the apparent "contradictions" in his thinking and the rigorous use of the German language may be arguments that justify the little diffusion of this author in Brazil.
