Resumen
The diffusion and rapid evolution of new communication technologies has created a pressing need to understand the complex forces reshaping media and politics. Who is emerging as powerful in this new context? Written by a leading scholar in the field, this book provides a new, holistic interpretation of how political communication now works. In The Hybrid Media System Andrew Chadwick reveals how political communication is increasingly shaped by interactions among older and newer media logics. Organizations, groups, and individuals in this system are linked by complex and ever-evolving relationships based on adaptation and interdependence. Chadwick shows how power is exercised by those who create, tap, and steer information flows to suit their goals, and in ways that modify, enable, and disable the agency of others across and between a range of older and newer media settings. The [CE1][NN2]book examines a range of examples of this systemic hybridity in flow in political communication contexts ranging from news making in all of its contemporary “professional” and “amateur” forms, to parties and election campaigns, to activist movements and government communication. Compelling stories bring the theory to life. From American presidential campaigns to WikiLeaks, from live prime ministerial debates to hotly contested political scandals that evolve in real time, from historical precedents stretching back five hundred years to the author's unique ethnographic data gathered from recent insider fieldwork among journalists, campaign workers, bloggers, and activist organizations, this wide-ranging book maps the emerging balance of power between older and newer media technologies, genres, norms, behaviors, and organizational forms.

Resumen
With the development of fiber optical data transmission technologies and infrastructure on a global scale, the use of fiber optical sensors to perform sensing functions is becoming increasingly important mainly due to their advantages, such as small size, light weight, multiplexing capabilities and others. Therefore, in order to ensure more efficient use of optical sensor technologies, it is necessary to research and search for new solutions for the integration and use of fiber optical sensors in existing and future fiber optical communication system architecture. The main goal of the Doctoral Thesis is to study and evaluate the interaction of FBG fiber optical sensor networks and WDM-PON metro-access transmission systems implemented in a single system with theoretical and experimental research. In order to evaluate their performance in a unified system, a detailed study of the interaction between the FBG optical sensor network and the fiber optic data transmission system has been performed by implementing mathematical modeling and experimental development of such systems.

Resumen
Abstract The contemporary public sphere is rife with problematic information, but on what terms are manipulators able to garner attention in the hybrid media system? Focusing on the messaging strategies employed by Donald Trump and his most vocal online supporters, Hacking Hybrid Media provides a theoretically oriented and empirically grounded analysis of the ways today’s media afford deceptive political communication. From the structures of social media platforms to the practices of political actors, the book offers a critical appraisal of media power and the capital required to wield it. Bringing the study of propaganda and media manipulation in conversation with literatures on media power and practice, this book examines how networked media capital is changing the fields of politics and journalism. By analyzing events like the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, the White House’s first “social media summit,” and the media frenzy following CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s alleged assault of an intern, the book shows how members of Trump’s “digital army” use Facebook groups, Reddit forums, Twitter hashtags, YouTube channels, mass media, and more to shape the flow of disinformation in American media.

Resumen
Chapters 8 and 9 employ an ethnographic approach to explore in more detail the hybrid media system's evolving norms. Here the context switches back to Britain and the analysis draws upon evidence the author gathered from insider interviews in 2010, 2011, and 2012 with those working in a range of organizations at the heart of Britain's media-politics nexus in London. Chapter 8 draws upon fieldwork among journalists; program-makers and editors working in radio, television, newspaper, magazine, and news agency organizations; independent bloggers; and senior regulatory staff at the Office of Communications (OFCOM) and the Press Complaints Commission (PCC). This ethnography reveals much boundary-drawing, boundary-blurring, and boundary-crossing, as the logics of older and newer media interact, compete, and coevolve.

Resumen
Chapters 6 and 7 expand further upon the theme of political organization by considering recent developments in the field of American election campaigning. Chapter 6 provides a detailed reinterpretation of the fabled 2008 Obama for America campaign and shows how this became a decisive period in the ongoing construction of the hybrid media system in American media and politics. The chapter argues that the Obama campaign's significance in building a new model for successful presidential campaigning lay not in its use of the internet per se, but in how it so ruthlessly integrated online and offline communication, grassroots activism and elite control, and older and newer media logics. Obama for America displayed a keen and hitherto neglected awareness of the continuing power of older media logics in election campaigns.

Resumen
There is no understanding Donald Trump without reference to the contemporary hybrid media system. His improbable victories in the Republican primary and 2016 general election were premised on radical departures from how electoral campaigns use communications media to engage journalists, supporters, and opponents. Once in office, Trump has continued to employ new approaches to presidential communications. For the Resistance, countering Trump required tactical and strategic innovations in the media realm. This chapter discusses how both Trump and the Resistance are deploying innovative new media strategies. It explores how Resistance groups are leveraging digital media to expand the reach of their protest tactics, using social media to undermine funding of partisan conservative media organizations, and building their own new media institutions to compete against the conservative media ecosystem.

Resumen
Chapter 1 outlines an ontology of hybridity; a way of approaching the study of the social world that moves us away from “either/or” thinking and toward “not only but also” thinking. It shows how this ontology of hybridity develops out of diverse and multidisciplinary strands in the social sciences and how the themes and dispositions of this body of research may, with appropriate theoretical and empirical development, generate new ways of exploring some of the classic concerns of political communication. Hybrid thinking also serves as a platform for understanding the three other central conceptual themes of this book: power, the idea of a system, and media logics, all of which are discussed in this chapter.

Resumen
This book explains how to use the bulk synchronous parallel (BSP) model to design and implement parallel algorithms in the areas of scientific computing and big data. Furthermore, it presents a hybrid BSP approach towards new hardware developments such as hierarchical architectures with both shared and distributed memory. The book provides a full treatment of core problems in scientific computing and big data, starting from a high-level problem description, via a sequential solution algorithm to a parallel solution algorithm and an actual parallel program written in the communication library BSPlib. Numerical experiments are presented for parallel programs on modern parallel computers ranging from desktop computers to massively parallel supercomputers. The introductory chapter of the book gives a complete overview of BSPlib, so that the reader already at an early stage is able to write his/her own parallel programs. Furthermore, it treats BSP benchmarking and parallel sorting by regular sampling. The next three chapters treat basic numerical linear algebra problems such as linear system solving by LU decomposition, sparse matrix-vector multiplication (SpMV), and the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The final chapter explores parallel algorithms for big data problems such as graph matching. The book is accompanied by a software package BSPedupack, freely available online from the author’s homepage, which contains all programs of the book and a set of test programs.

Resumen
This book presents an in-depth deliberation on optical networks in four parts, capturing the past, present, and ensuing developments in the field. Part I has two chapters presenting an overview of optical networks and the enabling technologies. Part II has three chapters dealing with the single-wavelength optical networks: optical LANs/MANs, optical access networks using passive optical network architecture, SONET/SDH, optical transport network and resilient packet ring. Part III consists of four chapters on WDM-based optical networks, including WDM-based local/metropolitan networks (LANs/MANs) using single and multihop architectures over passive-star couplers, WDM/TWDM access networks as an extension of PONs with WDM transmission, WDM metro ring networks covering circuit-switched (using point-to-point WDM and wavelength-routed transmission) plus packet-switched architectures and WDM long-haul backbone networks presenting the offline and online design methodologies using wavelength-routed transmission. Part IV deals with some selected topics in six chapters. The first deals with transmission impairments and power-consumption issues in optical networks, while the next three chapters deal with the survivable optical networks, network control and management techniques, including GMPLS, ASON, and SDN/SDON, and datacenter networks using electrical, optical, and hybrid switching techniques. The final two chapters present elastic optical networks using flexible grid for better utilization of the optical-fiber spectrum and optical packet and burst-switched networks. The three appendices present the basics of the linear programming techniques, noise processes encountered in the optical communication systems, and the fundamentals of queuing theory and its applications in telecommunication networks.
