Resumen
Social identity should not be considered anymore as a fixed and static image that defines individual or collective representations. It is embedded within a representational dynamic where biographical and social phases left their marks. This social imprint is partly made by the experience ingrained in the remembrance that gives all its experiential reality to identity. Action participates and reinforces this concreteness. It seems that the prescriptive nature of action reinforces its presence and therefore its effects. More precisely, these effects, which are inherent to action, possess a central power in the identity dynamic. Action is at the heart of subjectivity in the sense that it connects aspirations, representations, as well as the values of the individual and the sense of his own capacity. It involves the tight interweaving of affective and cognitive factors interacting into dynamic regulations and organizing more or less conflicting identity phases. We present in this article the effects of action on subjectivity.

Approved for public release, distribution unlimited
Recently, Turkey's foreign policy has undergone some considerable changes. In order to understand why this has occurred, and where Turkey's foreign policy will likely go in the future, one must examine Turkey's national identity. Today, Turkey's dominant national identity reflects a blend between modern, secular, and western customs with traditional Ottoman and Islamic culture: a "neo-Ottoman" identity. This synthesis of traditional and modern identities grew out of the 1980s and was solidified when the Justice and Development party (AKP), a secular party with strong roots in political Islam, was elected in 2002 and then re-elected twice with the largest plurality. This revisiting of Ottoman-Islamic culture is reflected in Turkey's foreign policy. Now that Turkey has shifted back to a greater comfort in its Ottoman-Islamic identity, it has reopened better relations with the Muslim world, which significantly differs from Turkey's foreign policy prior to 2002. While Turkey will continue solid relations with the west, it will only do so as long as it is in Ankara's own interest.

Resumen
This study explores Indian culture in second-generation Indian American families. For the most part, this generation was not socialized to Indian culture in India, which raises the question, how do parents maintain and teach culture to their third-generation children? To answer this question, I interviewed 18 second-generation Indian American couples who had at least one child. Rather than focus on how assimilated or Americanized the families were, I examine the maintenance of Indian culture. Instead of envisioning culture as a binary between “Indian” and “American,” second-generation parents often experience “Indianness” and “Americanness” as interwoven in ways that were not always easily articulated. I also explore the co-ethnic matrimonial process of my participants to reveal the salience of Indian-American identity in their lives. A common experience among my participants was the tendency of mainstream American non-Indians to question Indian-Americans about India and Indian culture. My participants frequently were called upon to be “cultural ambassadors” to curious non-Indians. Religion served as a primary conduit for teaching Indian culture to third-generation children. Moreover, religion and ethnic identity were often conflated. Mothers and fathers share the responsibility of teaching religion to third-generation children. However, mothers tend to be the cultural keepers of the more visible cultural objects and experiences, such as, food, clothing, and language. Fathers were more likely to contribute to childcare than housework. The fathers in my study believe they father in a different social context than their fathers did. By negotiating Indian and American culture, fathers parent in a way that capitalizes on what they perceive as the “best of both worlds.” Links to the local and transnational community were critical to maintaining ties to other co-ethnics and raising children within the culture. Furthermore, most of the parents in my study said they would prefer that their children eventually marry co-ethnics in order to maintain the link to the Indian-American community. Ultimately, I found that Indian culture endures across first- and second-generation Indian Americans. However, “culture” is not a fixed or monolithic object; families continue to modify traditions to meet their emotional and cultural needs.

Tanner, J. "Dynamic forces of organizational change : alignment of interests & imposition of identity". Thesis, London South Bank University, 2018. http://researchopen.lsbu.ac.uk/2737/.

Resumen
Organizations need to be aware of the drivers for change and how to prepare, plan, lead and implement programmes designed to meet these challenges. Organizational change has often been approached as either a change of staffing structure or a change in technology but commonly these changes are intimately interconnected. For organizational changes to succeed it is necessary for managers to negotiate new staff roles (identities) and to persuade staff to disengage from their existing teams and structures and to align to new structures (networks of association). This study examines the introduction of technology for use by administrative staff in a Higher Education Institution and how their interests were aligned, and identities re-negotiated. There is comparatively little investigation into the impact of change on Higher Education Professional Services staff. This work seeks further understanding in this area. The study made use of a series of convergent interviews, participant observation and document analysis carried out as a case study. The specific case detailed here was part of a planned programme of organizational and technological change. Interviews revealed that administrative staff role identities had changed significantly over time but in this instance the driver for change and the success of the project was the convergence of structure and technology. Data was analysed through the lens of Actor-Network Theory (ANT) which allows for the consideration of the social and material (technical) aspects of the case. ANT has a reputation for being difficult to operationalise in the field but for this research project, the method was used as a guide to assist with the identification of stakeholders and as a technique to aid data analysis. Analysis suggests that for change programmes to be successful it is necessary for managers to have local champions (allies) communicating the benefits, a good understanding of existing interests and identities that need to be re-aligned and the influence of other networks that could act to destabilise (betray) the new network. The outcome of the research is a new model, the Dynamic Forces of Organizational Change that brings together the elements of Fisher's Personal Transition Curve with ANT's four moments of Translation. The model is designed to help those involved in change programmes to better understand the dynamic forces that need to be brought into alliances and to fend off those that could potentially disrupt planned change.

Smith, H. M. J. "Matching novel face and voice identity using static and dynamic facial images". Thesis, Nottingham Trent University, 2016. http://irep.ntu.ac.uk/id/eprint/29001/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Research suggests that both static and dynamic faces share identity information with voices. However, face-voice matching studies offer contradictory results. Accurate face-voice matching is consistently above chance when facial stimuli are dynamic, but not when facial stimuli are static. This thesis aims to account for previous inconsistencies, comparing accuracy across a variety of two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) procedures to isolate the features that support accuracy. In addition, the thesis provides a clearer and more complete picture of face-voice matching ability than that available in the existing literature. Samedifferent procedures are used to address original research questions relating to response bias and the delay between face and voice presentation. The overall findings indicate that faces and voices offer concordant source identity information. When faces and voices are presented close together in time, matching accuracy is consistently above chance level using both dynamic and static facial stimuli. Previous contradictory findings across studies can be accounted for by procedural differences and the characteristics of specific stimulus sets. Multilevel modelling analyses show that some people look and sound more similar than others. The results also indicate that when there is only a short (~1 second) interval between faces and voices, people exhibit a bias to assume that they belong to the same person. The findings presented in this thesis have theoretical and applied relevance. They highlight the value of considering person perception from a multimodal point of view, and are consistent with evidence for the existence of early perceptual integrative mechanisms between face and voice processing pathways. The results also offer insights into how people successfully navigate complex social situations featuring a number of novel speakers.

Stoesz, Brenda Marie. "Selective attention to static and dynamic faces and facial cues". Journal of Vision, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/23996.

Texto completo
Resumen
Much of what is known about how we process faces comes from research using static stimuli. Thus, the primary goal of the present series of studies was to compare the processing of more naturalistic, dynamic face stimuli to the processing of static face stimuli. A second goal of the present series of studies was to provide insight into the development of attentional mechanisms that underlie perception of faces. Results from the eye-tracking study (Chapter 2) indicated that viewers attended to faces more than to other parts of the static or dynamic social scenes. Importantly, motion cues were associated with a reduction in the number, but an increase in the average duration of fixations on faces. Children showed the largest effects related to the introduction of motion cues, suggesting that they find dynamic faces difficult to process. Then using selective attention tasks (Chapters 3-5), interactions between the processing of facial expression and identity while participants viewed static and dynamic faces were examined. When processing static faces, viewers experienced significant interference from task-irrelevant cues (expression or identity) while processing the relevant cues (identity or expression). Age-related differences in interference effects were not evident (Chapter 3); however, biological sex and perceptual biases did contribute to the levels of interference seen with static faces (Chapters 4-5). During dynamic trials, however, viewers (regardless of age, sex, or perceptual bias) experienced negligible interference from task-irrelevant facial cues. Taken together, these findings stress the importance of using dynamic displays when characterizing typical face processing mechanisms, using the same methods across development, and of considering individual differences when examining various face processing abilities.

Kianpour, Saeid. "Syrian Refugee Fathers Perceptions of Identity and Family Dynamics in the U.S. after Displacement". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/99462.

Texto completo
Resumen
At the end of 2016, approximately 65.6 million individuals were displaced forcibly around the world because of generalized violence, persecution, violation of human rights, or conflict such as civil war (UNHCR, 2016). The purpose of this study is to: (a) explore Syrian refugees after displacement in the US, (b) give voice to refugee fathers, and (c) advance knowledge for marriage and family therapists, who are working with refugee families. Eight Syrian refugee fathers who were displaced in the last two years and living in Indiana, US shared their experiences through in-depth interviews. After transcribing and translating the interviews, thematic analysis, a flexible research tool that provides a reach and complex account of data, was used to analyze the data. Four main themes emerged from fathers: displacement stress, loss of extended family connections, experiences of isolation, and identity changes with provider role. A thematic map also is created illustrating how the stress of displacement and being far away from extended families profoundly influence provider identities and family interactions. In addition, the contextual model of family stress is used to customize fathers experience of displacement. The inferences from this study provide guidance for marriage and family therapists, mental health practitioners, and organizations working with refugee families.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis analyses the process of transnationalisation of the practice of capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art form, in France and in the United Kingdom. The expansion of capoeira accompanied Brazilian emigration in search of better living and working conditions abroad, but also resulted from the adaptation and appropriation by local practitioners. Through ethnographic research among capoeira groups in France and in the UT<, in particular interviews with group leaders and their students, the thesis unveils the power relations that organise the market and the mechanisms employed by the capoeiristas to ensure their legitimacy against their competitors. The results show that capoeira groups became vectors of new forms of sociability, and the source of identities related to lifestyle claimed as "alternative" by its practitioners. These of new identities capoeira groups do not have as their main reference the working world or the state. In a context of intense circulation of individuals, capoeira groups in big cities like Paris and London are emerging as new location strategies; they are located in new "dynamic places," to which its members are perceived to be connected. The analysis reveals the mechanisms controlling the expansion of the practice, which is implemented by the capoeiristas themselves.

Aronoff, Leya. "Dynamic Motivation to Lead: Construct Validity of Motivation to Lead". Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/2254.

Texto completo
Resumen
Although motivation to lead (MTL) was characterized as stable, recent research suggested otherwise. This study explored the malleability of MTL and its predictors. Individuals with high affective-identity MTL are motivated to lead because they enjoy leading. Individuals with high social normative MTL are motivated by an obligation to lead. Individuals with high noncalculative MTL are drawn to leadership because they avoid weighing the costs and benefits of leading. Applicants to a California college were sent a questionnaire on MTL and leadership self-efficacy (LSE) (Time 1 assessment, N = 2704). Four years later (Time 2), participants who responded at Time 1 were sent a survey on motivation to lead, leadership self-efficacy, college leadership experience, and leader identity (LID) (N = 96). Results showed that participants’ affective-identity and noncalculative MTL have decreased over time. Leadership self-efficacy at Time 2 and leader identity at Time 2 were related to the changes in all 3 categories of MTL. Only specific college leadership experiences related to changes in affective-identity MTL. Lastly, leader identity at Time 2 mediated the relationship between affective-identity MTL at Time 1 and Time 2. Most high school students applied to college aspiring to be leaders, but only students who cultivate their leader identity should continue to be motivated to lead. Implications are discussed in the context of the construct validity of MTL, specifically for student leadership development in higher education.

Enoksson, Louise y Elin Larsson. "The Role of A Flexible Brand Identity in A Dynamic Market : A Multiple-Case Study on Swedish Coffee Brands". Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Handelshögskolan (from 2013), 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-82639.

Texto completo
Resumen
Conducting successful business requires a clear and steady brand identity, which is a part of brand management (Aaker, 1996; Kapferer, 1992, de Chernatony, 1999). Sticking to the core values and the traditions of the brand is beneficial. However, it seems advantageous to possess a flexible brand identity for the brand to be able to adapt to market trends and development. This could be of even more importance if the brand is existing in a dynamic market (Eisenhardt & Martin, 2000). This study aims to understand and further describe the role of flexible brand identity in a dynamic market, from a corporate point of view. The study was made according to an inductive approach of qualitative research, which enabled data collection from two case companies. The Swedish coffee market was chosen as the case market. Hence, five in-depth interviews were conducted with people working for two established coffee brands in Sweden.    The empirical findings showed the importance of working on the brand identity to stay relevant in the Swedish coffee market. Factors and stakeholders such as consumers, retail, shops, origin of the coffee, changes in consumer interests, and market trends were mentioned. Communication, and brand transformation, also appeared to be important factors within the study. The empirical findings have been analysed in comparison to the previous research on brand identity and dynamic markets, as well as further developed and discussed.  Altogether, the study aimed to discuss concepts and the empirical findings, and by the inclusion of the research questions: 1) How do companies work on transforming their brand identity? 2) How can a flexible brand identity be favourable when existing in a dynamic market? In conclusion, the Swedish coffee market appears to be moderately dynamic, and the benefits of a flexible brand identity is the ability to adapt and adjust for market trends, as long as the core values are taken into account during the changes.

Magagnoli, Matilde. "Design and city branding".

ABSTRACT: The discipline of place branding has grown in popularity over the last decades, becoming area of interest for many cities all over the world. Undergoing a city branding intervention implies a multi-levelled effort for the city’s administration, whose aim is to capture the city’s essence through direct involvement of citizens, define the reputation and develop a strategic set of actions for the city’s image and desired reputation to align over the course of time. Place branding’s major goals are to attract new foreign investors, improve the quality of infrastructures and the quality of life, attract new events and mega- events from all over the world and fuel citizens’ active participation to the city’s administrative life. The improvement of the city’s brand often culminates in the creation of a visual identity for the city, that becomes the graphic metaphor and container of all those values that the place wants to communicate about itself. This study aims to define the contribute that design can bring to the discipline of city branding, define a set of generic guidelines to follow in the creation of a place brand and its visual identity, and put them in practice by developing a graphic project for the city of Milan. After outlining a theoretical framework for the areas of branding and place branding, an analysis of case studies was carried out in order to observe some real and successful examples of city brands; these steps allowed us to define whether a dynamic visual identity was the most appropriate tool to represent a city in a graphic form, as well as the role of the communication designer in the place branding process. Once the theory was framed, the research moved more specifically towards the city of Milan: first, a questionnaire was prepared and submitted to Italian citizens, in order to capture Milan’s perceived and desired image; secondly, interviews to Milan’s political and non-political influential figures were carried out with the aim of defining the city’s positioning, aspirations and problematics; at last, a direct observation of the city as well as an historical research on the territory and its symbols was completed. The material collected formed the basis for the development of a graphic project, which was then evaluated by a group of experts. Given the extensive process of renovation that Milan undertook in the last decade and the increase of its reputation worldwide, the city is in the right historical conditions to begin a place branding process. The creation of this project, developed under the partial guidance and approval of city’s marketing administration, moves a first small step in that direction.

Through ethnographic research among capoeira groups in France and in the UK, in particular interviews with group leaders and their students, the thesis unveils the power relations that organise the market and the mechanisms employed by the capoeiristas to ensure their legitimacy against their competitors. The analysis reveals the mechanisms controlling the expansion of the practice, which is implemented by the capoeiristas themselves

In the context of language instruction and learning, L2 willingness to communicate (WTC) is a relevant factor in learners’ language use. It is viewed as a volitional process influenced by individual, social, linguistic, and situationally dependent factors. Foundational research focuses on either trait or state WTC-influencing factors as separate entities. Current research considers the dynamic relationship that occurs between the two though less research exists on how WTC manifests in classroom interaction. This study investigates such differences by examining learners’ self-reported, perceived trait WTC and situational state WTC. It treats WTC as a dynamic entity which is shaped by learners’ investment in language learning and the identity they take on as language learners. It considers the relationship of WTC to its three most influential trait variables: motivation, L2 perceived competence, and L2 anxiety. It presents findings of additional variables influencing state WTC. Data were comprised of questionnaire surveys, focal participant interviews, and classroom observations. Quantitative data consisted of 39 participants, and qualitative data consisted of 12 focal participants. The importance of the present study lies in its investigation of WTC in relation to trait and state factors, and its stance that investment in L2 learning is a key factor in fostering classroom WTC. Finally, it explores how WTC can be positively fostered to optimize the learner’s language experience.

In the context of the universitarization of paramedical training, the purpose of this thesis is to study evolutions in the identity of trainers who train people in their former profession through the example of nurses who have become nursing trainers. The main questioning of this research is the impact of the process of paramedical training universitarization and the inherited nurse identity on identity dynamics and on the professional recognition of trainers in Nursing Training Institute (IFSI). The theoretical framework is mainly constructed from the model of the double transaction (Dubar, 2010) to which we have associated identity dynamics and projects of Oneself (Kaddouri, 2002). The methodology of this research articulates two complementary approaches: a quantitative survey by questionnaires followed by a qualitative survey based on a series of semi-structured interviews with a comprehensive aim. The results show that IFSI trainers in particular who claim a strong inherited nurse identity feel more threatened by the process of paramedical training’s universitarization, which would result in a dynamic of identity transformation with a project of Self on self often oriented towards a proximity management function. On the contrary, a not very persistent inherited nurse identity in the present invested identity of IFSI trainers would lead to a dynamic of identity continuity of a trainer, most often with a self-maintenance project in the function of the trainer

Although identity development and separation-individuation in parent-child relationships are widely perceived as related tasks of psychosocial maturation, they have been treated relatively independently in psychological research. Furthermore, longitudinal investigations in young adulthood are very scarce although this is the age period where autonomy and personal identity fully develop and significant, qualitative changes in parent-child relationships take place. Therefore, the present dissertation covers the proposition of a differentiated, dynamic-developmental integration of parent-child relationships and identity development in the transition to adulthood that describes sequential and reciprocal associations between components of identity and relationships, mechanisms that could explain these associations, and determinants of interpersonal differences in development. In a 2-Wave longitudinal study on young adult students, the proposed longitudinal associations were tested. Associations between personal Agency, Mature Connectedness with parents, and Identity certainty showed the predicted pattern of reciprocal reinforcement, indicated by the prediction of an increase in Mature Connectedness by self-efficacy beliefs and by reciprocal associations between Mature Connectedness and certainty about and identification with identity commitments. Separateness and identity uncertainty were relatively independent. It was argued that a more situation-specific and short-termed measurement might provide stronger association because stressful situations might cause momentary self-uncertainty and trigger affiliation-seeking. Recommendations were offered on how future research might extend upon these results by testing the proposed sequences and mechanisms using longitudinal studies with multiple assessment points across the adolescent and young adult years and by incorporating parents as interactive agents with their own identity and separation issues.

Resumen
Three empirical studies conducted for this Ph.D. project investigated the intrapersonal and interpersonal processes related to leader identity construction of employees working at the hybrid institutional work context of social enterprises. Identity work as an intrapersonal process, which is closely linked to leader identity development, has rarely been empirically investigated through experimental studies of leaders-to-be who have motivation to lead. The field experiments in Study 1 (N = 34) and Study 2 (N = 26) examined the employees’ leader-role claiming process that led to leader identity construction.

The main objective of this research is to study and explore the identity and capacity dynamics of long-term job seekers. The literature on unemployment is relatively large and undoubtedly constitutes a painful and devastating test for the individual, from the standpoint of identity, self-esteem or self-efficacy (Koen, Klehe & Van Vianen, 2013; Herman, 2007). Our study is interested in understanding the identity strategies that are played during this period of inactivity and the influence that the project can have in this dynamic according to two types of public: accompanied and unaccompanied. The project "as a figure of anticipation is a specifically human characteristic" (Boutinet, 2014) and happens to be with action, at the heart of the functioning of the individual associated with two moments, that of conception and The realization. In this perspective, we have carried out a qualitative study using the ego-ecological approach and its methodology, the IMIS, Multistatistic Investigator of Social Identity (Zavalloni, 2007; Zavalloni & Louis-Guérin, 1984). The population is composed of eight job seekers benefiting from one part of an accompaniment in one case and the other not. A series of interviews was conducted allowing us to raise the complexity that plays within the dynamics of identity and capability. The exploitation of the results has led to the emergence of differentiated identity processes. Individuals, benefiting from support, develop a professional project and the means to achieve it. In comparison, those who did not benefit seem to be in a phase of inaction, demotivation in their job search

Resumen
The aim of this article is to present the processes that drive the phasic identity dynamics of social identity, allowing us to define simultaneously a representation of self and the personal and professional project. As a result, it implies differentiated levels of anchorages in the organizations, groups and society that contribute to shaping the self-project. We will illustrate this, thanks to cases and situations related to the context, autobiographical memory but also emotions, feeling of capacity and motivation. One of our orientations stipulates that social identity is organized in a representational dynamic in which the phases of action become facilitators of identity construction and leaving forms in experiential memory necessary for the construction of the project

Aim: The existing literature on the experiences of individuals who have undertaken Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as part of their doctoral Clinical Psychology training in the UK is scarce, particularly from the perspective of qualitative peer research. The aim of the present study was to construct and articulate a deeper account of such experiences, and in particular, to explore how individuals make sense of these experiences. It is hoped that the findings of the present study will increase awareness within Clinical Psychology training programmes of the experiences, perspectives and needs of trainees who undertake PBL. Method: A qualitative approach was adopted. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight Trainee Clinical Psychologists who have undertaken PBL at a Clinical Psychology training programme in South-East England. Their accounts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which endeavours to illuminate the lived experiences of small samples of individuals who have experienced a particular phenomenon. Results: The analytic procedure highlighted four main themes emerging within participants’ accounts: Intensity of the experience; Striving towards connection versus fear of disconnection; Responses to manage the experience(s) can be unhelpful and helpful; and Trying to make sense of PBL. Implications: Participants characterised PBL as a challenging yet invaluable process through which they made significant gains, both professionally and personally. Facilitators were noted to play a key role in helping to create safe spaces in which trainees are supported to engage with issues that may arise for them in relation to their professional and personal development. Implications and recommendations are outlined for the benefit of Clinical Psychology training programmes that may wish to incorporate or alter PBL within their syllabuses.

Resumen
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
Organizational identity, a social and relational process that is continuously happening, plays a key role in organizations’ performance and communication. Achieving a clear and shared organizational identity enables employees’ alignment and the projection of consistent images to external stakeholders. Non-profit organizations are an interesting group to study organizational identity dynamics. These organizations pay little or no money to their workers achieving often high levels of performance. Organizational identity processes can be a possible explanation for this. The present study analyzes four non-profit organizations that operate in the social field. Findings suggest that, besides several common traits, there are two kinds of identity orientations among non-profit organizations: ideological identity orientation and methodological identity orientation. These two orientations constrain the organizational identity and are reflected in the relationships established between organizational members and the stakeholders. In both cases, organizations might develop identity dysfunctions, i.e. organizational narcissism and hyper-adaptation.

Texto completo
Built on a network of contrasts, the romantic world of Fred Vargas bears the mask of detective fiction. The murders of the present hide the bruises of love in the past.Mediator between these diegetic poles, the passion of Vargas’s character breaches the rules of the game that is imposed on him by the world. For behind these civilized appearances ,the original order continues:predation. Confronted by his failure, the character must take up a challenge that will transform his investigation in a quest for identity. Selecting either transgression or self-sacrifice will determine whether he collapses or reappears with his dignity.Converging the plot and the Story, the diegetic here and now bestows upon the character the role of linking the Here and Elsewhere, and adverse identities. The enquiry approaches, the psyche of the murderer and the investigator, reconstituting the interaction between the individual and the world, defined as its synchronic and diachronic chronotope. The relationship between humans and their Others reveals the person behind the character. The confrontation between the human animal and real and mythologized animals challenges the borders between identity and otherness. The real murderer turns out to embody one of the masks of the imagination, while the imagination, established as an ideal of humanity, becomes a reality to conquer at the price of self-sacrifice, and reveals how flexible the realities of failure and fulfillment can be. Analysing the mirror effect between opposition and complementarity accentuates the union of opposites that create the coexistence of horror and the sublime, and love and death in the dichotomy that make up mankind and the world

Texto completo
Resumen
As politics in the world becomes all the more polarized it is important to look at how and why groups and factions are formed in today's society. In addition; one of the fastest growing medias in history, that of Digital Games, only becomes more and more influential the larger the budget and the greater the market. Therefore seeing how factions work in games and what, if any, effect it has on real life becomes just as vital as studying the phenomena in reality. It is also useful to see how we portray different kinds of factions, how the developer uses faction-related mechanics to guide the player and what a player chooses to do when interacting with groups and factions in games. The methods we used was primarily focused on diffraction because we wished to see what the different components of factions were and how one can, perhaps, switch them up. There are many aspects of what makes factions in games tick and the best method for identifying them, separating them and then re-applying them to discover new approaches and perspectives is, we decided, diffraction. Ultimately the conclusion we reached is that when it comes to factions in games communication is key and it is vital for any developer to know how to make use of it. Not just how to facilitate it, but also how to limit it. For while communication is, in general, good it could be detrimental to anyone wanting to create separate distinct player-driven factions. This is because a faction that has grown in a vacuum is going to be more distinct and unique than one grown together with another. When two factions can not communicate you get two separate entities, but when they can you get one entity with two different flavours to it, as World of Warcraft has quite clearly demonstrated. But even in single player games communication is vital, but this time between the developer and the player. Factions in this regard helps the player with categorizing that which they encounter in the world as well as better understanding said world in general. For instance, if a character belongs to a faction it is reasonable to assume the character supports the ideals of said faction. This helps both in assisting the player to quickly grasp the nature of the character, but also gives the potential for a bigger surprise if one chooses to undermine it later on in the narrative.
World of Warcraft lyckats demonstrera ytterst bra.

A fashionable concept for some decades, « ecotourism » has been selected as the leading product for National Parks and large forests areas. With the opening, in 2007, of the “Amazonian park of Guyana “, the “Wayana”, like other local traditional communities, have not escaped from theories related to sustainable development as well as the “ecotourism”. But what reality stands behind such a concept in the southern part of Guyana, geographically isolated, and under the influence of strong cultural identities and a clandestine and criminal gold extraction activity. The current study tries to understand the cultural movement and their ambition to maintain a cultural identity, in a society in complete transition. In order to study the social and cultural changes, the author has observed the Indians way of life in the heart of Guyana today, as opposed as to how it was yesterday. Our study points out that, although very interested by the modern world, Indians still depend on natural resources and are concerned with the preservation of their identity. Their ways of using resources have certainly evolved, but they remain basically respectful of the environment and biodiversity because these societies function in order to minimize any negative impacts on their environment. These societies are therefore concerned with the management of their resources in a durable way. It’s easily perceivable in the itinerant agriculture, also in the fishing “à la nivrée”, where the area is left unexploited for regeneration after resources have been used. The search for an endogen compromise between a traditional way of life and a modern one is quite significant when one observes and analyzes the evolution of the Amerindian habitat. Opting more and more for buildings with partitions and separations, not just covered with basic vegetable roofs but with metallic material, the “Wayana” have not abandoned the use of “carbet-hamoc”, nor of open air toilets where the population live. Indians, traditionally, use streams as toilets. Our study shows that this custom is the same for all Indians living in the interior territories of Guyana, because it goes beyond a simple hygienic and physiological concern. In their cultural system, this rule is not systematically imposed by the natural environment. It’s governed above all by an ecological logic, pertinent to these micro societies, followed by the necessity to clearly identify two different worlds: the animal world and the human world. According to internal “Wayana” logic, it is only wild animals that use the ground for their excretions, whilst human beings, in order to distinguish themselves, use streams. But, facing changes brought about by the external world (sedentary life, demographic expansion, social care…), the internal coherence of the social and cultural model of the “Wayana” is in jeopardy. Installing a culture of “ecotourism” therefore seems to confront logics: one set of exogenous logics brought on by its promoters and another set of endogenous logics maintained by the autochthon traditional populations fitting with their holistic vision of the universe, leading either to some form of compromise or to antagonist attitudes opposed to any type of negotiation

Resumen
This research investigates the social and political framings and experiences of actors involved or concerned with ova exchanges following two cases of cross-border ova ‘trafficking’ from Romania. I explore the impact that these two cases have had on the subsequent regulation of ova provision in the country, and on the procurement of female gametes for IVF treatments. During eight months of ethnography in Romania I interviewed 37 participants from various backgrounds connected to the world of IVF. I conducted observation in medical and institutional settings, and analysed relevant EU and Romanian regulations, as well as media stories related to ova ‘trafficking’. My findings show that, following the ova commercialisation cases, Romanian authorities have established an official regime of ova provision rooted in a set of regulations, institutions, and practices that ensure all exchanges are ‘free and altruistic’. However, the regime’s ambiguity has allowed its circumvention by IVF patients and ova providers, who sometimes engage in direct monetary exchanges. Additionally, the regime has attracted the criticism of many stakeholders, who have engaged in identity performances to legitimise their claims. Nevertheless, power differentials and the challenging of the identities of those opposing the regime have curtailed attempts at changing the current framing of ova provision, with practical and ethical consequences that affect the most vulnerable: infertile persons and ova providers. This thesis is the first to give an in-depth understanding of Romanian ova provision. Rooted in STS scholarship, my findings contribute to the understanding of ova provision ‘in the making’, as it is enacted in a multiplicity of contexts, under the action of a diversity of apparatuses. I challenge the country’s portrayal as a victim of exploitation and emphasise its role as a consumer of foreign reproductive services, arguing for a more nuanced approach to the analysis of reproductive stratification.

Resumen
As national markets of many countries around the world continue evolving as arenas of ‘lived multiculture’ (Neal et al., 2013), it becomes crucial for marketers to know how to align their activities to the complex sociocultural dynamics in consumer spheres. Individual identities “continually evolve overtime” (Kleine and Kleine, 2000: p279) and can be transformed through one’s life experiences. Resultant from these transformations, varying and composite identities emerge that integrate a range of differing, complex cultural dispositions and drive consumer desires for this diversity to be visualised in cultural meanings of brands. Hence, understanding whether and how cultural identity dispositions form and evolve as a result of one’s being in lived multiculture environment is crucial for the study of culture-informed consumption. While there has been sustained interest in cultural identity complexities of ethnic migrants, considerations of identity transitions of mainstream consumers (i.e. non-migrant, locally born) so far have been predominantly restricted to local-global culture dichotomy. Since international marketing theory generally is concerned with wider consumer audiences than a particular ethnic segment, the mainstream/migrant population divide is increasingly regarded unhelpful (Jamal, 2003; Schroeder, 2009; Luedicke, 2011). This thesis explains theoretically how acquiring a holistic, integrative perspective on the multiple types of cultures at play in complex cultural identity transformations occurring across consumer groups can provide insights into intricacies of culture-bound consumption trends and inform closer alignment of culture-based branding theory and practice with lived multiculture realities. The study conceptualises the multicultural marketplace as a multidimensional environment where consumers are exposed to a diverse range of global, local and foreign cultural meanings simultaneously and deploy these meanings for (re)construal of identity. Next, extending acculturation theory, it develops a theory of Consumer Multiculturation, taking account of eight diverse types of cultural identities that can evolve from being in a multicultural marketplace. The results support the proposition that consumers deploy local, global and/or foreign cultures differentially and in varying combinations to derive a sense of unicultural, bicultural or multicultural self, and that complexities of derived identity elicit equally complex and different responses to cultural meanings of brands.

Resumen

In the age of a networking revolution, when the Internet has changed not only the way we see computing, but also the whole society, we constantly face new challenges in the area of user verification. It is often the case that the login-id password pair does not provide a sufficient level of security. Other, more sophisticated techniques are used: one-time passwords, smart cards or biometric identity verification. The biometric approach is considered to be one of the most secure ways of authentication.

On the other hand, many biometric methods require additional hardware in order to sample the corresponding biometric feature, which increases the costs and the complexity of implementation. There is however one biometric technique which does not demand any additional hardware – user identification based on keyboard statistics. This thesis is focused on this way of authentication.

The keyboard statistics approach is based on the user’s unique typing rhythm. Not only what the user types, but also how she/he types is important. This report describes the statistical analysis of typing samples which were collected from 20 volunteers, as well as the implementation and testing of the identity verification system, which uses the characteristics examined in the experimental stage.

Resumen
This thesis is concerned with the work of business leaders. The interest lies in the holders of positions as Chairpersons, Boardmembers and Managing Directors. This study, however, goes beyond the position holder to consider the actions of actors, as they operate within networks with concurrent multiple business activities. The purpose is to generate knowledge and understanding of the activities and relations of multibusiness leaders involved in managing small and medium-sized companies. Major schools of thought on the manager's job are described. The review relates the scientific debate about different schools and emphasises the need for more inductive research. The call for processual and contextual analysis leads to an epistemological position grounded in understanding through interpretation. The method used in this study adopts such an approach, and thus aims to discover qualities of the studied phenomenon based on social constructivism. Empirical reality is approached by means of intensive studies of a few cases. Case descriptions of the work of multibusiness leaders in the National, Regional, Intermediary, Independent, and Developing Networks are undertaken, where the interaction processes of the different actors are described according to the working life history of the actor, and to the networking and work activities carried out. The analysis is based upon four themes (the actor's 'task legitimacy', 'economic legitimacy', 'idea development' and 'network'). The first two themes have been given the generic term 'legitimacy concept', not only to reflect the interactive and changeable aspects of work, but also to illustrate how work in itself is intimately interwoven in an institutional context. The creation of 'task legitimacy' and 'economic legitimacy' of the leaders is analysed. The analysis of the actors' idea development results in a description of differing visions in the individual networks. This description takes up visions covering long-term industrial leadership, regional co-operative leadership, restructuring leadership, flexible market-adaptive leadership and network-based leadership. In a survey of the existing literature, the role of a leader is seen as one of many managerial roles, a view that is based upon the work of Mintzberg (1973). This study contrasts with the above picture, by discussing a reciprocal dependency between the leader's leadership role and his/her other roles. This reciprocity and concurrency is dealt with by introducing the concept of identity as a theoretical aid, thus reflecting in a more appropriate way the complex and interactive actor. The social identity concept (Tajfel, 1982) is used, in order to answer more profoundly the research questions. As leaders are reciprocally dependent on a network for their own existence, we must both look inward in order to be able to understand at a deeper level the actors' motives, and look outward to be able to look at identity creation in a wider industry context. What I have termed näringslivsledaridentitet (the Identity of Multibusiness Leaders), is a substantial part of this study's findings. The concept is used in order to be able to describe how the actors' inner and outer motives merge in identity creating processes. The actors' different patterns of interaction are absorbed into a composite whole.

Resumen
This thesis attempts to construct a realistic theology of the Church. The foundations for such a theology are in the concrete historical existence of the life of the churches; and the treatment of them is rooted in the life and theological tradition of the Reformed churches and their understanding of ‘perpetual reformation’. The thesis argues that traditional systematic doctrinal elucidations of the Church fail to engage the life of the concrete historical Church when they seek to prioritise internal systematic coherence. Through a critique of the place the Church holds within the doctrinal systems of Calvin and Barth it argues that the doctrine of the invisible Church typically functions as a idealised and dualistic ontology of the Church which undermines the ability of theology to engage with the concrete historical visible Church. In an examination of the function of confessional texts within the Reformed tradition, and a close reading of one particular text, the key themes of the sociality of the Church, the incomplete nature of the Church and therefore its perpetual reformation, and the triadic relationship of God-the people of God-world are explicated. An examination of the reformation of confessional positions regarding Israel and Judaism isolates primary factors involved: a returning to origins (scripture); the context of the world; and the practices of the Church. The implications of the Jewish-Christian dialogue in returning the Church to the Hebrew scriptures and Jewish thought as resources for ecclesiology are highlighted. An examination of the initiation and renewal of the covenant within the Old and New Testaments reveals three fundamental orientations as necessary for re-information: to the past, to the world, and to the future. These are mediated through practices (both within biblical Israel and the contemporary worship of the Church), the functioning of which are elucidated with reference to social scientific theories of collective memory. It is argued that the Church is historically contingent, formed as such through divine activity within history, and it is this contingency, bounded by the future in-breaking of God both in, and to end, history, which allows for an understanding of the incomplete and sinful nature of the Church and the way the identity of the Church is formed primarily through its practices.
