Resumen
It is proposed that goal pursuit is related to how we resolve conflicts with others, and with our psychological well-being. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether there is an association between individual’s interpersonal goals (compassionate and self-image goals), conflict management style (integrating, compromising, obliging, dominating and avoiding), and psychological well-being. To further investigate the role of interpersonal goals, we designed a self-report questionnaire to measure the preference of compassionate goals as opposed to self-image goals in social conflict situations. Seventy university students completed an on-line questionnaire. The results showed that compassionate goals are negatively associated with dominating style, and positively associated with integrating, compromising and obliging style. Self-image goals correlated positively with dominating style, and negatively with integrating style. Furthermore, individuals with higher levels of self-image goals have a consistent way of dealing with conflicts in different situations. There was no statistically significant association between psychological well-being and interpersonal goals or conflict management style. The results are discussed in light of previous findings and concrete suggestions for further research are presented.

Many current media images of women have underlying messages that affect our psyche in a negative way, whether or not we are aware. These images convey an unrealistic, distorted view of ideals and perfection, which create an unattainable model to live up to. As women, we should be cherishing our uniqueness, but, rather than celebrating and accepting ourselves, we are taught to judge and conceal. This project seeks to address inner beauty as a reflection of our energy, vitality, wisdom and the mental, as well as emotional, engagement in our lives. The terms perfection and imperfection will be redefined and applied to inward rather than outward appearance. Through a photographic study, this project will emphasize the value and beauty in aging. In the end, I would like to encourage my audience to not only recognize but also understand and accept the difference between media images and their own self-images.

The situational self-image, which recognizes the affect of situational influences, particularly social roles, was the specific topic of investigation of this study. It has generally been hypothesized in marketing literature that consumers will purchase the brand with the image most congruent with the consumers' self-image. Symbolic Interactionism, a field of study in sociology, provides the theoretical foundations for the construct situational self-image. Realization of the relationship between the situational self-consciousness and involvement was also investigated.

Resumen
The study sought to examine tactics used in family conflict and the relationship between these tactics and measures of self esteem and cognitive development. One of the questions which flow from this analysis is whether there is a safe level of conflict which is related to higher levels of cognitive development and/or self esteem or does any level of conflict have a negative effect on these aspects. Subjects consisted of 251 year nine and ten students from a Canberra Catholic high school. Using Straus's (1979) Conflict Tactics Scale for various family dyads, measures of Piaget's stages of cognitive development, and Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale (1965), no significant differences were found between cognitive development and conflict tactics, self esteem or gender. Adolescents from violent families had lower self-esteem than those from non-violent families, however verbal aggression was very common and the sole use of reasoning was atypical.

Resumen
Consumers and society are becoming increasingly sensitised to corporate scandals and rejective of brands and products that suggest unethical business and marketing practice. To prevent corporate image loss and financial damage, academic marketing ethics research is concerned with the development of predominantly generic moral standards and prescriptive ethics codes to avoid moral conflict between stakeholder interests. However, these codes have yet found little application in marketing practice. The thesis focuses on this perceived gap between marketing theory and practice by arguing for an academic deficit of knowledge in marketing thought. Marketing thought is how marketers' make sense of their professional reality and negotiate moral conflict. For that matter, the thesis is based on the premise that an improved understanding of marketing thought provides the foundation for developing applied marketing ethics that generate a positive image for the profession as well as the corporations that marketing serves. To that effect, its investigation is believed to be mutually beneficial for marketing ethics academia and practice. Divergent from most conventional marketing ethics research, the thesis' empirical investigation is a qualitative, interactive and in-depth exploration of the individual marketing professional. Interviews provide insight into how actual marketing thought is manifested in the way individual marketers narrate and explain their daily professional decision making and negotiation of potential moral conflict. For credibility and viability, the analysis of interview data is informed by concepts of cognitive moral neutralisation theory that originate from criminological literature. In lieu of their great potential for the research of human's self-understanding and explanations of behaviour, as yet, they have not found previous empirical application in academic research of marketing ethics and the marketing-self. The key contribution of the thesis to existing marketing knowledge is the conceptualisation of the Professionals' Dyadic Self-Defence Strategy framework. The framework demonstrates that professionals' denial of experiencing moral conflict is based on a complex dyadic, as extrinsic and intrinsic self-defence strategy. Activated, the defence manifests in marketers' contextual constructs of effective ideologies to explain and justify one's professional behaviour to others and the self. The investigation's identification of ideologies show marketers' propensity to negotiate their responsibility for rather than the morality of their professional actions' outcome. The extended on knowledge of marketing thought is discussed by providing specific long-term and short-term vistas for development in academic as well as applied marketing ethics.

Hand, Troy S. "Self-organized traffic flows: a sequential conflict resolution approach". Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/49125.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis discusses the effect of sequential conflict resolution maneuvers of a continuous flow of agents through a finite control volume. Video analysis of real world traffic flows that exhibit self-organized capabilities is conducted to extract characteristics of those agents. A tool is created which stabilizes the input video and extracts motion from it using the background subtraction method. I discuss the tool in detail as I created it to be user friendly and easily modifiable for other uses. The aim of the video analysis I conduct is to determine characteristics of agents in self-organized traffic flow. Comparisons are made with agents under sequential conflict resolution schemes and those that exhibit these self-organized capabilities to determine if agents under sequential control can approach the behaviors of those in self-organized environment. Flow geometries are studied and generalized with the goal of determining stability characteristics of arbitrary flow geometries. Stability analysis includes analytical proof of bounds on the conflict resolution maneuvers.

One of the many issues facing dual-career families today is work family conflict (WFC). WFC is a source of stress due to incompatible roles that conflict with each other in terms of ones time and energy. This study was done to develop a valid reliable measure of career and family responsibility in hopes of adequately determining the source of WFC. The key point was to look at real and ideal selves, in terms of work and family responsibilities.

Resumen
The ex-Services population is estimated to make up between 3.5% to 10% of the prison population according to the Defence Analytic Services Agency (DASA, 2010) .and National Association for Probation Officers (NAPO, 2008). Soldiers are believed to make up the largest occupational group in the prison system, numbering at least 8,500 (NAPO). Many ambiguities exist around how the Services experience may impact upon personnel and potentially on subsequent offending behaviour. In my view there is limited research which addresses the issue directly and discussions have tended to focus on the same constructs, generally considered through quantitative methodologies. Given the high numbers of personnel returning from on- going conflicts in the Middle East it is important that a new perspective be offered to the conversation. In my view this population themselves are best placed to do this. Ten male ex-Services personnel have been interviewed, within a qualitative research design and a grounded theory methodology has been used with the aim of giving a 'voice' to the men themselves. Drawing from a situational interactionist influence a theoretical framework is proposed which addresses. the interaction between these men and their context, situational demands they perceived and the strategies they evolved to meet them. Challenges are addressed and strategies developed in the realms of interpersonal relationships, time and space, military action and emotions which helped them to survive on a number of levels. These are represented by four core categories: Securing the Self, Structuring the Self, Defining the Self and Expressing the Self. I propose that the men evolved these adaptive strategies over time in the Services and to varying degrees carried them into civilian life and in some cases into their offending behaviour. The proposed ideas are discussed with regards to how they complement existing theory and a case study is presented to suggest how they might be applied in clinical practice.

Resumen
Thesis (MA (VA)(Visual Arts))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007.
Thesis received without illustrations at the time of submission to this repository.
This research follows the assumption that the notion of performativity can be applied to the visual construction of identity within art-making discourse in order to explore the contingent and mutable nature of identity in representation. My interest in performativity, defined as the active, repetitive and ritualistic processes responsible for the construction of subjectivities, lies within the process of production. I indicate how this notion, within the context of self-representation, can provide the possibility for performing identity as a process. I investigate the extent to which gender, the gaze, memory and narrative contribute to the performative construction of self-representations and reveal, through the exploration of my practical research, that these concepts are themselves performative. Although agency to construct the self can be regarded as problematic, considering the role of language and discourse in determining subjectivities, this research suggests that it is possible to perform interventions from within language. I suggest that the notion of inscription provides a means through which identity constructions can be performed differently; and that my art-making process of repetitive inscription, erasure and re-inscription of image and text and the layering of paint not only reflect the notion of performativity, but also enable me to expose the multiple and fragmented nature of identities.

Resumen
The Dissertation titled Documentary Approaches in Contemporary Fine Art Moving Image focuses on the practical and theoretical research of documentary approaches to videos and films in the art field. It notices especially the self-reflexive strategies as a consequence of critical approach towards the medium itself and lack of belief in its ability to mediate reality or truth. Attempts to convey reality by audiovisual means are accompanied by the reflection of the way this happens. The Dissertation also reflects on the uncertain relation between the documentary and truth, which has been described in art by the artist and theoretician Hito Steyerl. The examined artworks were made in the period between the beginning of 21st century, when the documentary turn was reflected intensively, and the present time. The selection of examples was strongly influenced by the local study of Israeli art in The Video Archive of the Center for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv. Motives of conflict, violence and trauma resonating in studied videos and films influenced further selection and analysis of the authors’ documentary methods from a different context. In the selected works I can see particularly various forms of alienation effects and self-reflexive approaches. Using these procedures the artists highlight the constructedness of the audiovisual work and the way it was produced. Recurring formal principles have been stated. Reenactment of real events, revealing the way the work was produced or the artist’s position in the production process; these strategies indicate the uncertain relationship between the documentary work and reality. In the frame of these tendencies also reevaluation of the observational documentary strategies as something seemingly opposite to self-reflexive strategies is reviewed. Theoretical outcomes are continuously accompanied by author’s own art projects concentrated around the form of documentary portrait and its (de)construction. They experiment with the formal principles analyzed on a theoretical level.

Resumen
The goal of this study was to investigate the real self-image, ideal self-image, and self-image disparity of maltreated adolescents, both acting-out and nonacting-out, as compared to nonmaltreated adolescents. Participants included 58 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 with groups approximately matched for age, IQ, and mental age. The maltreated group consisted of children who had been neglected, physically abused, and/or psychologically abused. Children in both maltreated and nonmaltreated groups were classified as acting-out or nonacting-out based on reports of truancy, substance abuse, disrespect for authority, violent outbursts, and trouble within the legal system. The primary findings of the study were that maltreated as compared to nonmaltreated individuals displayed lower real self-images and larger self-image disparities. However, the lowest real self-image scores were displayed by the acting-out adolescents regardless of their maltreatment status. In a comparison between the acting-out maltreated adolescents and the acting-out nonmaltreated adolescents, the real self-images were comparable, suggesting that the experience of maltreatment does not exacerbate the negative effect of behavioural difficulty. In addition, the acting-out maltreated children displayed higher ideal self-images than the acting-out nonmaltreated children. Both experiences of maltreatment and acting-out behaviours appear to be related to negative effects of self-image in adolescents. This highlights the importance of investigating the influence of experiential factors on self-system processing.

Resumen
This thesis develops a self-adaptive architecture for image understanding that addresses certain kinds of lack of robustness common in image understanding programs. The architecture provides support for making image understanding programs that can manipulate their own semantics and thereby adjust their structure in response to changes in the environment that might cause static image understanding systems to fail. The general approach taken has been to explore the ideas of self-adaptive software and implement an architectural framework that addresses a class of problems that we term "interpretation problems" common in image understanding. Self-adaptive software is a relatively new idea and this thesis represents one of the first implementations of the general idea. The general idea is that to make programs robust to changing environmen- tal conditions that they should be "aware" of their relationship with the environment and be able to restructure themselves at runtime in order to "track" changes in the environment. The implementation takes the form of a multi-layered reflective interpreter that ma- nipulates and runs simple agents. The interpreter framework utilizes Monte-Carlo sam- pling as a mechanism for estimating most likely solutions, uses Minimum Descriptin Length (MDL) as a central coordinating device, and includes a theorem prover based compiler to restructure the program when necessary. To test the architectural ideas developed in the thesis a test domain of interpreting aerial images was chosen. Much of the research described in the thesis addresses issues in that problem domain. The task of the program is to segment, label, and parse aerial images so as to produce an image description similar to descriptions produced by a human expert. An image corpus is developed that is used as the source of domain knowledge. The first processing stage of the program segments the aerial images into segments similar to those found in the annotated corpus. To accomplish this a new segmentation algorithm that we call semantic segmentation was developed that not only used MDL as a principle to drive the low-level segmentation but also allows higher level semantics to influence the segmentation. In our usage of the algorithm those semantics take the form of labeling and parsing the resulting segmentation. The second stage labels the regions and parses the regions into a parse tree. To do this we develop a 2D statistical parser. Rules of grammar are induced from the corpus and an MDL parser finds approximations to the most probable parse of the regions of the segmented image.

Pandelis, Smaroula. "A self-image questionnaire for Greek adolescents". Thesis, University of Surrey, 1993. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/843852/.

Texto completo
Resumen
The present thesis concerns the modification of the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire for Adolescents (OSIQ) and its adaptation to a Greek sample. Three studies are presented which involve the course of development of the modified questionnaire namely the Self-Image Questionnaire for Adolescents (SIQA) and the psychometric properties of its scales. Study I presents a series of exploratory Factor Analyses of the OSIQ, based on the data from 1,314 Greek adolescents aged 13-17 years, which led to a modified version with 89 items and 7 scales. The psychometric properties of the scales are presented. Study II is based on data collected from 423 Greek adolescents aged 13 to 17 years and refers to the description of the 7 scales of the modified questionnaire, the creation of its short version, the internal consistency of the scales of both versions and an ANOVA comparing the parameters of sex, age and socioeconomic status of the subjects with their performance on the scales of both SIQA versions. Study III examines the reliability and validity of both SIQA versions based on the data from a group of 305 normal Greek adolescents and 95 deaf Greek adolescents all aged 13-17 years. Two types of reliability are employed; (a) internal consistency and (b) test-retest. Two methods of validity are also employed; (a) construct validity comparing the SIQA scales with the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI) scales and (b) discriminant validity comparing normal with deaf adolescents.

Haferkamp, Claudia J. "Conflict among clinic couples : self-monitoring, attributions, and resolution strategies". Virtual Press, 1987. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/517085.

Resumen
The relationship of self-monitoring processes and causal attributions to choice of conflict resolution strategy among married clinic couples was examined. Thirty-five couples and nine individual spouses who were currently receiving marriage counseling completed four questionnaires: the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Scale; Snyder's Self-Monitoring Scale; a Marital Conflict Questionnaire, a measure of attributions; and a Conflict Strategy Scale measuring the frequency with which spouses used Integrative (cooperative), Distributive (uncooperative), and Denial-Avoidant conflict resolution strategies. The following hypotheses were tested: 1) self-monitoring differences between spouses would be positively associated with attributional conflicts and uncooperative modes of conflict resolution; 2) responsibility attributed to the partner would be associated with increased dispositional attributions for the partner's behavior, increased use of Distributive strategies, and lower overall marital satisfaction. Analyses included bivariate correlations and multiple regression analyses predicting conflict strategy and marital satisfaction from self-monitoring and attributions.Contrary to expectations, self-monitoring differences were not related to attributional conflict or conflict strategy endorsed. However, high self-monitoring spouses made more situational attributions for their partners' behavior and endorsed more frequent use of Dental-Avoidant strategies. Responsibility attributed to the partner had a positive relationship to dispositional attributions for the partner's behavior but no relationship to use of conflict strategy. Regression analyses indicated that self-monitoring, Intent to have an impact, and resolvability of conflicts accounted for significant amounts of variance in use of Distributive (uncooperative) strategies. Importance of conflicts, own control, and use of Denial-Avoidant strategies predicted more than three-fourths the variance in marital satisfaction. Results contradict previous research Indicating that partner responsibility Is associated with Increased uncooperative behavior. Present results suggest that self-presentational concerns are prevalent In marital conflicts and may enhance the likelihood of uncooperative/avoidant behavior. Possible modifications in the attributional model of marital conflict to account for the Impact of self-monitoring on conflict resolution in distressed relationships are proposed. Implications for therapy with distressed couples and future research on attributional processes in close relationships is discussed.

Baldwin, Carol L. (Carol Louise). "Self-Complexity and Physiological Responses to Facial Self-Reflection: An Investigation into Women's Self-Image". Thesis, University of North Texas, 1996. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc278327/.

Resumen
In this study, effects of facial self-reflection and complexity of self on physiological responses were investigated. Skin conductance levels were measured during baseline and neutral conditions, then under a self-focusing condition provided by mirror reflection of the face. Subjects completed measures of self-complexity, depressive affect, self-esteem, anxiety and body image satisfaction. Eye tracking data was collected during the mirror condition. Results showed a significant effect of mirror self-reflection on physiological reactivity as measured by differences between mirror and baseline mean responses. Pre-test depressive affect was correlated with low self-esteem but not with self-complexity. Self-complexity was negatively correlated with orientation to physical appearance and positively correlated with greater differences between baseline and mirror mean reactivity. Self-complexity and depressive affect did not significantly predict physiological reactivity, although a trend was found for the influence of each variable. Post-hoc analyses showed significant group differences for both self-complexity and depressive affect on physiological reactivity, although the influence of self-complexity was in the unexpected direction. Results of this study are consistent with general findings that negative self-esteem, anxiety and depression are strongly correlated. In addition, a strong correlation was found between negative self-esteem and dissociative symptoms. Exploratory analyses of eye tracking data found no significant relations among personality variables and percent of time looking at facial image, although some trends were found. Trends for a relation of self-complexity with time looking at facial image, negative evaluation of appearance in the mirror, and less focus on physical appearance suggest a component in the domain of self-complexity related to physical appearance. Clearly, self-complexity has a number of interrelated dimensions and remains a challenging area of study. In addition, the combination of eye tracking and physiological measurement is a relatively new area of study that shows promise for continued investigation.
