The credibility of a regulator could be threatened if stakeholders perceive that assessments of performance made by its inspectors are unreliable. Yet there is little published research on the reliability of inspectors’ assessments of health care organizations’ services. Objectives We investigated the inter-rater reliability of assessments made by inspectors inspecting acute hospitals in England during the piloting of a new regulatory model implemented by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) during 2013 and 2014. Multi-professional teams of inspectors rated service provision on a four-point scale for each of five domains: safety; effectiveness; caring; responsiveness; and leadership. Methods In an online survey, we asked individual inspectors to assign a domain and a rating to each of 10 vignettes of service information extracted from CQC inspection reports. We used these data to simulate the ratings that might be produced by teams of inspectors. We also observed inspection teams in action, and interviewed inspectors and staff from hospitals that had been inspected. Results Levels of agreement varied substantially from vignette to vignette. Characteristics such as professional background explained only a very small part of the variation. Overall, agreement was higher on ratings than on domains, and for groups of inspectors compared with individual inspectors. A number of potential causes of disagreement were identified, such as differences regarding the weight that should be given to contextual factors and general uncertainty about interpreting the rating and domain categories. Conclusion Groups of inspectors produced more reliable assessments than individual inspectors, and there is evidence to support the utility of appropriate discussions between inspectors in improving reliability. The reliability of domain allocations was lower than for ratings. It is important to define categories and rating levels clearly, and to train inspectors in their use. Further research is needed to replicate these results now that the model has been fully implemented, and to understand better the impact that inspector uncertainty and disagreement may have on published CQC ratings.

The demand for consistent quality has led to 100% inspection using automated systems rather than the traditional sampling with human inspectors. However, these automated systems cannot adapt to novel situations to meet the required performance without human intervention. The need for costeffective and superior inspection performance has resulted in hybrid systems in which the functions are allocated depending on the capabilities of humans and machines. With the increasing availability of computer technology due to decreased costs and size, the role of humans in inspection systems is changing from that of a continuous “online” inspector to that of a supervisor of multiple tasks. This study uses a computer-based visual inspection simulator to investigate the role of the human as a supervisor in inspection systems, with the main focus on the effect of performance of one hybrid inspection system on human decision to intervene in another system to optimize the inspection performance.

Oberflächengüten und geometrische Bauteiltoleranzen sind ein entscheidendes Qualitätskriterium in der Fertigung. Die resultierenden Rauheiten und Bauteildurchmesser sind dabei vom Werkzeugverschleiß abhängig und werden nach der Bearbeitung häufig mittels taktiler Messgeräte geprüft. Am Institut für Werkzeugmaschinen und Fabrikbetrieb (IWF) wurde ein optisches Messsystem entwickelt, das mithilfe eines Lasers eine Online Bauteildurchmesser- sowie Rauheitsmessung während der Drehbearbeitung erlaubt.   Surface finish quality and component tolerances are a critical quality criterion in production. The resulting surface roughness and workpiece diameters depend on tool wear and are usually inspected with tactile measurement systems after machining. At the Institute for Machine Tools and Factory Management (IWF), an optical measurement system was developed which employs a laser and enables the online measurement of workpiece diameters and surface roughness for turning processes.

The present study has concentrated on online crisis response strategies that stimulate online purchase and the acceptance of online purchase intention (OPI) in the marketplace. However, few studies have examined the online crisis response strategies undertaken to alleviate the online crisis. Therefore, on the basis of the Stimulus Organism Response framework and online crisis response strategies, this study offered and tested a model that inspected the effect of online crisis response strategies on OPI through online brand attitude (OBA). Brand perceived usefulness (BPU) was observed as a borderline condition between OBA and OPI. We recruited 392 working professionals undertaking the Master of Business Administration program at a large public university in China. The results suggest that OBA mediates the association between online crisis response strategies and OPI. Similarly, BPU moderates the association between OBA and OPI. The responses with high BPU maximize the effect of online crisis response strategies on OBA. On the basis of the study outcomes, contributions to theory and practice, limitations, and future guidelines are well discussed.

Abstract Summary Thanks to recent advances in live cell imaging of biosensors, microscopy experiments can generate thousands of single-cell time-series. To identify sub-populations with distinct temporal behaviours that correspond to different cell fates, we developed Time Course Inspector (TCI)—a unique tool written in R/Shiny to combine time-series analysis with clustering. With TCI it is convenient to inspect time-series, plot different data views and remove outliers. TCI facilitates interactive exploration of various hierarchical clustering and cluster validation methods. We showcase TCI by analysing a single-cell signalling time-series dataset acquired using a fluorescent biosensor. A number of authors have considered the procedure of online process control in which every [Formula: see text]th item produced is inspected. The process is judged to be in control and continues if the inspected item is judged to conform to specifications. If the inspected item is judged to be nonconforming, then the process is judged to be out of control and stopped, examined, and adjusted as necessary. This inspection process is subject to misclassification and different schemes have been suggested for dealing with this. In this paper, we propose a new rule in which the final judgment that an item is conforming, and thus the process is in control, if and only if [Formula: see text] consecutive classifications as conforming occur before a total of [Formula: see text] classifications as nonconforming. We will examine various aspects of this protocol and provide advice on how to determine values of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for this rule.

Millions of users post comments to TripAdvisor daily, together with a numeric evaluation of their experience using a rating scale of between 1 and 5 stars. At the same time, inspectors dispatched by national and local authorities visit restaurant premises regularly to audit hygiene standards, safe food practices, and overall cleanliness. The purpose of our study is to analyze the use of online-generated reviews (OGRs) as a tool to complement official restaurant inspection procedures. Our case study-based approach, with the help of a Python-based scraping library, consists of collecting OGR data from TripAdvisor and comparing them to extant restaurants’ health inspection reports. Our findings reveal that a correlation does exist between OGRs and national health system scorings. In other words, OGRs were found to provide valid indicators of restaurant quality based on inspection ratings and can thus contribute to the prevention of foodborne illness among citizens in real time. The originality of the paper resides in the use of big data and social network data as a an easily accessible, zero-cost, and complementary tool in disease prevention systems. Incorporated in restaurant management dashboards, it will aid in determining what action plans are necessary to improve quality and customer experience on the premises.

Nowadays, the concept of “digital twin” has received great attention from both academia and industry. However, few methodological solutions have been reported in existing studies. This paper presents a life prediction method for aircraft structure, and illustrates how this method can be embedded into a “digital twin” framework. This method can fuse heterogeneous information acquired from inspected physic entity, fifinite element software, historical database and predictive model, giving an accurate and real-time prediction of remaining useful life (RUL) for aircraft structure. In the operation of this method, the degradation behaviour of inspected structure is observed in an online manner. Historical record document is used for generating prior knowledge. The external load condition is fed into fifinite element software for calculating the stress intensity factor. The well-known Paris law is adopted as predictive model. Finally, the Bayesian inference is used to integrate the information and predict the future degradation of inspected structure. Theoretical deviation and experiment on a public database demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, facilitating the implementation of “digital twin” in real-world scenario.

In the last few years, Online Social Networks (OSN) have experienced growth in the number of users, becoming an increasingly embedded part of people’s daily lives. Privacy expectations of OSNs are higher as more members start realizing potential privacy problems they face by interacting with these systems. Inspection methods can be an effective alternative for addressing privacy problems because they detect possible defects that could be causing the system to behave in an undesirable way. Therefore, we proposed a set of privacy inspection techniques called PIT-OSN (Privacy Inspection Techniques for Online Social Network). This paper presents the description and evolution of PIT-OSN through the results of a preliminary empirical study. We discuss the quantitative and qualitative results and their impact on improving the techniques. Results indicate that our techniques assist non-expert inspectors uncover privacy problems effectively, and are considered easy to use and useful by the study participants. Finally, the qualitative analysis helped us improve some technique steps that might be unclear.

Much recent attention referring to surveillance practice in China has been paid to Chinese authorities’ authoritarian strategies like hiring online inspectors and building the Internet Firewall. While this focus meets the conventional imagination of a non-democratic regime, it neglects the underlying policy changes and structural arrangements with which the Chinese government conducts its governance in the era of big data. My ongoing study demonstrates, there has appeared a market through which various for-profit institutions are selling data services to help the governments conduct domestic governance in China. Through purchasing the Internet information surveillance system which is based on technologies like data mining, sentiment analysis and cloud computing, most Chinese local governments have incorporated the surveillance of public online opinion into their daily work. This phenomenon implies that a neolibral form of governance which aims at monitoring and guiding public sentiment is taking shape in authoritarian China.

The objective of the project was to encourage health promotion through education, outreach, and community-based training. The people attending health fairs (n = 467), community events (n = 469), and Kindergarten classes (n = 241) were the study participants. Hands-on training was offered at homebuilding retail stores (n = 25). U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s online visual training was given to realtors (n = 220), and inspectors, contractors, and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) workers (n = 75). Training workshops were attended by home-buyers and rental home owners at the Neighborhood Association Meetings (n = 91). The impact of training was evaluated by pre- and posttests. Nearly, 90% of the participants (n = 25) reported the hands-on training was useful. At posttest after the HUD online training, 59.4%, 67.9%, 65.1% of the participants (n = 220) identified soil, car batteries, and paint as sources of lead in the environment, respectively. Nearly 70% identified lead as a poison in the environment while 77.5% and 47.2% demonstrated two behaviors which help prevent lead poisoning. A total of 62.3%, 48.1%, and 58.5%, at posttest identified three complications or illnesses—behavioral, physical, and psychological, respectively. The home owners are required to get permission from the City for housing repair. In coordination with the federally funded housing repair or lead abatement programs, the trained inspectors are authorized to certify the renovation or repair works. These outreach activities were successful in improving the knowledge of the community people on lead poisoning prevention.

The purpose of this study is to examine online reviews on michelin star restaurants in terms of which vary according to the user to be useful and to evaluate the factors affecting the overall assessment. For this aim, the online reviews about michelin star restaurants on the website TripAdvisor are examined. Among 32.225 online user reviews in total, 3.622 reviews are analyzed. Considering online reviews with regard to michelin star restaurants, it is concluded that reviews with more helpful than three and three are more negative towards the value, atmosphere, food, service and overall evaluation. When the relationship between overall evaluation and value, atmosphere, food, service is inspected, it is seen that value is the variable that describes the overall evaluation best and then food comes second, third is atmosphere. ÖzetBu çalışmada, michelin yıldızlı restoran yorumlarının, kullanıcılara faydalı olmalarına göre farklılık gösterip göstermediği araştırılmış ve genel değerlendirmeyi etkileyen faktörler incelenmiştir. Bu amaca yönelik olarak, TripAdvisor seyahat yorum sitesinde üç yıldızlı Michelin restoranlarına ait online yorumlar ele alınmıştır. Yorum sayısı 50’nin altında olan restoranların yorumları araştırmaya dâhil edilmemiş ve sadece İngilizce yazılan yorumlar ele alınmıştır. Bu kriterler dikkate alınarak 3 yıldızlı michelin restoran işletmesine ait 32.225 yorumdan sadece 3.622 tüketici yorumu incelenmiştir. İncelenen yorumlara göre; üç ve üçten daha fazla faydalı olan yorumları yazanlar michelin yıldızlı restoranların değerini, atmosferini, hizmetini, yemeklerini ve genelinde daha olumsuz yaklaşmaktadır. Michelin yıldızlı restoranların genel değerlendirilmesini, en iyi açıklayan değişkenin değer olduğu, sonra yemeğin geldiği daha sonra atmosferin geldiği görülmektedir.

The objective of the paper is to demonstrate a measurement strategy for online inspection of surface defects in products, especially discontinuities which appear in castings after machining. The essence of the proposed online vision inspection system is to provide an automated method for obtaining and analyzing images of the inspected surfaces, to allow an unmistakable and consistent finding of defects and specifying their types. The proposed solution could improve productivity and quality in the manufacturing process especially for the automotive industry and significantly improve automatization in die casting technology. This is one of the most fundamental problems of a research studies in process design for automotive parts such as: handles of transmission systems, cylinder pistons and cylinder front faces in engine bodies, that has significant influence for the manufacturing cost. Proposed by the author an online vision inspection systems are responded to users demands for systems that are easier to use, low-cost, and flexible. Using a combination of a vision hardware and software, the proposed vision system could analyze the images, usually in a fraction of a second. Since the human visual inspection is slow and expensive, a smart technology is an alternative solution for the online inspection. The developed smart technology uses advance vision system with specially designed lighting, an advanced image processing algorithm for defect detection and their classification.

Peer to peer applications have modified the nature of internet traffic. It will consume high internet bandwidth and affect the performance of traditional traffic internet applications. Therefore, the management and monitoring activity of internet traffic is the important activities involved in the optimization. In order to detect and mitigate the P2P traffic, port, payload, and transport layer based methods were developed in the past. Nevertheless, the performances of these methods were not up to the expectation. Machine Learning (ML) is one of the promising methods to identify and mitigate the traffic of the Internet. However, the classification accuracy is inconsistent. The reason for the inconsistency is the relevant training datasets generation and feature selection. In this research, a technique based on signature-based and ML is proposed to develop a model for online P2P traffic detection and mitigation. The proposed work can be employed to evaluate the robustness of the online P2P machine learning classifier based on real network traffic traces containing flows labelled by SNORT tool and from special shared resources. Analysis and validation were carried out on traffic traces of University Technology Malaysia. The period of traffic was 2011 and 2013. The output of research is revealing that the proposed work has spent less computation time for classification. This method gives 99.7% accuracy which equals the classification performance attained for P2P using deep packet inspector. The findings show that classifying network traffic at the flow level can differentiate P2P over non-P2P (nP2P) with high confidence for online P2P mitigation.

Shopping is one of the many everyday activities that are increasingly digitally remediated. This not only transforms the high streets of our villages and towns, but also the way customers and retailers interact, the way retailers present goods to customers, the way customers can examine goods, and the perceived and real risks customers are exposed to. Goods that can be touched and handled in markets and brick-&-mortar shops must now be inspected and selected by means of words and images, which presupposes linguistic and visual literacies. This article centres on an analysis of Zalando’s use of multimodal resources, and it shows how different registers intertwine. Also, it points to an increasing importance of language and it suggests that online shopping may in fact be less multimodal than face to face shopping, requiring linguistic skills and literacies not everyone possesses. The text analysis is related to findings from eye-tracking research and to findings from marketing studies, and thus bridges between different approaches to the study of online shopping.

This article describes how interpersonal relationships structures and standards are evolving. By focusing on a social network context, this study examined different factors that can affect forgiveness decision of a victim of an online offense. In addition, it inspected whether the decrease of trust after an online-related offense can be affected by forgiveness. 323 participants took part in this study by completing a questionnaire that recorded different measurements. Structural equation modeling was used as the main technique for data analysis, and AMOS was used as a tool. Surprisingly, while empathy and commitment had no significant direct effect, results showed that the severity of the offense, its frequency and pretransgression trust are the main factors that influence forgiveness. Moreover, a victim's trust towards the transgressor decreased much more in the absence of forgiveness than in its presence. A valuable contribution of this article is in the prospect for related future research as well as the potential for applications that explore new techniques to facilitate forgiveness in the digital age.

Resumen
Crack detection during the manufacturing process of pressed-panel products is an important aspect of quality management. Traditional approaches for crack detection of those products are subjective and expensive because they are usually performed by experienced human inspectors. Therefore, the development and implementation of an automated and accurate inspection system is required for the manufacturing process. In this article, a crack detection technique based on image processing is proposed that utilizes the images of panel products captured by a regular camera system. First, the binary panel object image is extracted from various backgrounds after considering the color factor. Edge lines are then generated from a binary image using a percolation process. Finally, crack detection and localization is performed with a unique edge-line evaluation. In order to demonstrate the capability of the proposed technique, lab-scale experiments were carried out with a thin aluminum plate. In addition, a test was performed with the panel images acquired at an actual press line. Experimental results show that the proposed technique could effectively detect panel cracks at an improved rate and speed. The experimental results also demonstrate that the proposed technique could be an extension of structural health monitoring frameworks into a new manufacturing application.

Abstract Background: In order to conduct a probability business survey, a high quality sampling frame of enterprises is needed. Objectives: The goal of the paper is to investigate publicly available online businesses lists which can be used as sampling frames in business surveys in Croatia and to find out whether they have a satisfactory quality level. Methods/Approach: Publicly available businesses lists in Croatia are examined and their appropriateness for use in different modes of data collection as business sampling frames is inspected. The advantages and disadvantages of businesses lists are discussed and compared. Results: Overall 11 online businesses lists are considered as business sampling frames in the paper. The comparison analysis has shown that businesses lists from the government institutions are the best choice when business surveys are conducted face-to-face, by mail and/or by telephone. However, none of the observed businesses lists is good enough to be used in a business web survey. Conclusions: The research has shown that the publicly available online businesses lists are of a satisfactory level of quality only if traditional data collection modes are used. Unfortunately, they are not appropriate in business web surveys. Therefore, the development of a business register in Croatia is a prerequisite for conducting probability and representative business web surveys in the future.

This work addresses the problem of online fault detection of an advanced wind turbine benchmark under actuators (pitch and torque) and sensors (pitch angle measurement) faults of different type. The fault detection scheme starts by computing the baseline principal component analysis (PCA) model from the healthy wind turbine. Subsequently, when the structure is inspected or supervised, new measurements are obtained and projected into the baseline PCA model. When both sets of data are compared, a statistical hypothesis testing is used to make a decision on whether or not the wind turbine presents some fault. The effectiveness of the proposed fault-detection scheme is illustrated by numerical simulations on a well-known large wind turbine in the presence of wind turbulence and realistic fault scenarios.

Because the V-belt continuously variable transmission (CVT) system driven by permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has much unknown nonlinear and time-varying characteristics, the better control performance design for the linear control design is a time consuming procedure. In order to overcome difficulties for design of the linear controllers, the hybrid recurrent Laguerre-orthogonal-polynomial neural network (NN) control system which has online learning ability to respond to the system’s nonlinear and time-varying behaviors is proposed to control PMSM servo-driven V-belt CVT system under the occurrence of the lumped nonlinear load disturbances. The hybrid recurrent Laguerre-orthogonal-polynomial NN control system consists of an inspector control, a recurrent Laguerre-orthogonal-polynomial NN control with adaptive law, and a recouped control with estimated law. Moreover, the adaptive law of online parameters in the recurrent Laguerre-orthogonal-polynomial NN is derived using the Lyapunov stability theorem. Furthermore, the optimal learning rate of the parameters by means of modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed to achieve fast convergence. Finally, to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme, comparative studies are demonstrated by experimental results.

The composite recurrent Laguerre orthogonal polynomial NN control system can perform inspector control, recurrent Laguerre orthogonal polynomial NN control which involves an adaptation law, and recouped control which involves an estimation law. Moreover, the adaptation law of online weight parameters in the recurrent Laguerre orthogonal polynomial NN is based on Lyapunov stability theorem. The use of modified particle swarm optimization yielded two optimal learning rates for the weight parameters which helped improve convergence. Finally, comparison of the experimental results of the present study with those of previous studies demonstrated the high control performance of the proposed control scheme.

In order to improve the risk identification ability of the technical support system of food safety supervision, an online screening platform for food risk substances (hereafter referred to as “platform”) was established. The platform aims at the qualitative analysis of unknown compounds and consists of three parts: a standard spectrum library, screening model, and online comparison module. The standard library contains the standard spectra of 527 food risk substances by high-performance liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry. The screening comparison algorithm, the core of the screening model, is obtained through the improvement of the existing spectral library search algorithm. The inspector uploads the original spectrum file through the online comparison module; the online comparison module calls the corresponding script to convert the original spectrum file into a standard spectrum file and then uses the screening and comparison algorithm to achieve online real-time comparison. The comparison results are used to determine whether the sample to be tested contains the food risk substances contained in the standard library, so as to realize the preliminary screening of potential food risk substances. The platform supports the spectrogram data format of mainstream instrument manufacturers. The standard spectrogram database can be coconstructed and shared by cooperative laboratories to effectively enrich the types of food risk substances. Through laboratory comparison, data calibration, and model optimization, the screening accuracy of the platform can reach more than 97%. The platform adopts the Internet online screening method, which greatly facilitates the risk investigation and control of national food safety inspection and testing institutions. At the same time, the construction of the screening platform for food risk substances based on high-performance liquid chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry, the Internet, big data, and other technologies will provide a new technical means for food safety risk management and control. Hence, it can build a bridge between the screening of risk substances and illegally added substances, as well as risk assessment, risk management, and control.

A new online visual inspection technique is proposed, based on a wavelet reconstruction scheme over images obtained from the hull. This type of visual inspection to detect defects in hull surfaces is commonly carried out at shipyards by human inspectors before the hull repair task starts. We propose the use of Shannon entropy for automatic selection of the band for image reconstruction which provides a low decomposition level, thus avoiding excessive degradation of the image, allowing more precise defect segmentation. The proposed method here is capable of on-line assisting to a robotic system to perform grit blasting operations over damage areas of ship hulls. This solution allows a reliable and cost-effective operation for hull grit spot blasting. A prototype of the automated blasting system has been developed and tested in the Spanish NAVANTIA shipyards.

Objective: To survey the prevalence of non-prescription monthly colored contact lenses (CL) defects in an electronicmarketplace (e-marketplace) in Thailand using visual inspection (VI).Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included the 252 items listed from 23 online shops in ane-marketplace in Thailand during April 2021. Online customer reviews for each shop were examined and complaintsregarding colored CL product defects, delivery, services and abnormal symptoms after use were collected. Productpacking and visible internal and external product characteristics were visually inspected under sufficient light forthe prevalence of defects by three examiners.Results: Sixteen out of twenty-three online shops (69.57%) had customer complaints. Wrong delivery was the mostcommon complaint (60.87%). Five characteristics of product defects were described by customers, of which abnormalscratches/marks on CL (8.70%) was the most common. Abnormal symptoms after use were found in 43.84% of theshops. Two hundred and thirty-seven pairs of colored CL (94.05%), 470 vials and four blisters from 19 shops wereexamined. Defective products were found to be 8.02%. The most common visible external and internal productdefects were dirty products (3.80%) and foreign bodies in the original sealed manufacturer’s containers (1.90%),respectively. Other defects, e.g. scratched or peeling label, incompletely closed aluminum cap, surface wear of CL,abnormal scratches or marks on CL and immobility of CL in solution were also found.Conclusion: Non-prescription monthly colored CL in the e-marketplace have many visible defective characteristicsthat CL wearers should be concerned about. This study suggests that VI of CL products before use may be animportant potential safety factor for CL wearers.

When inspectors from the Office québécois de la langue francçaise (OQLF) objected to the use of the word “pasta” in a Montreal restaurant in February 2013, a backlash in news and social media erupted internationally. Ensuing pressure led to the resignation of the OQLF head and a revision of OQLF language complaint procedures; the Pastagate story also contributed to mounting negativity towards the province and its language. Social media have been credited with playing a role in the proliferation of the story and its impact. Drawing on a corpus of Tweets containing PASTAGATE, this paper uses corpus-assisted discourse studies to explore language ideologies in English and French Tweets. Findings reveal divergent language ideologies and representations of the Pastagate affair. The paper concludes by suggesting that language ideological debates in a superdiverse online world may have implications for minority languages in the offline world of nation-states.

In the fiber-sensing gas detection system, characteristic of near infrared absorption spectrum of the detected gas is greatly significant. The volatilized gasoline vapor is a mixture rich in various components, of which near infrared absorption spectrum shall be determined by means of experimental measurement. In this paper, an experimental platform is constructed by analyzing absorption characteristic of liquid composition in gasoline within the range of near infrared spectrum, which achieves measurement of the volatilized gasoline vapor with different concentration. In addition, reliability of this measurement method is inspected, a comparison between features of absorption spectrograms of liquid and gas is made, and linear relation of absorbance and concentration of gasoline vapor is verified. The result shows that the experimental data is acceptable and may be used as the basis of further analysis and for design of the online detecting system of gasoline vapor concentration in the hazardous environment.

This paper stems from a review of the studies which have focussed on the obstacles which preclude Libya reaping the benefits of e-commerce, at a time when many businesses are moving online, as a result of the lockdown introduced in response to COVID-19. This study has discussed and inspected the problems facing Libyan e-commerce. As a result of these problems, e-commerce has not taken hold in Libya or brought the country its considerable economic advantages. This paper suggests a range of recommendations which will contribute to adopt e-commerce in Libya and advance its popularity, among individuals, organisations and the government institutions, so that Libyan society can begin, and continue, to benefit from e-commerce.

A non-standard romanization of Arabic script, known as Arbizi, is widely used in Arabic online and SMS/chat communities. However, since state-of-the-art tools and applications for Arabic NLP expects Arabic to be written in Arabic script, handling contents written in Arabizi requires a special attention either by building customized tools or by transliterating them into Arabic script. The latter approach is the more common one and this work presents two significant contributions in this direction. The first one is to collect and publicly release the first large-scale “Arabizi to Arabic script” parallel corpus focusing on the Jordanian dialect and consisting of more than 25 k pairs carefully created and inspected by native speakers to ensure highest quality. Second, we present Atar, an attention-based encoder-decoder model for Arabizi transliteration. Training and testing this model on our dataset yields impressive accuracy (79%) and BLEU score (88.49).

Background and objectives: Lead poisoning is a preventable environmental health hazard. Although the prevalence of lead poisoning is declining, the rates are disproportionately high in selected communities. This community-based participatory research (CBPR) program aimed to enhance people’s awareness on lead poisoning prevention through community outreach and educational interventions in Mississippi. Methods: Secondary data of 42,372 children obtained from the Mississippi State Department of Health were analyzed to identify the most affected communities in Mississippi. Community-based outreach and education activities were carried out in the most affected areas to increase population awareness on lead poisonig prevention. Results: Hands-on training was offered to 25 participants at homebuilding retail stores. Of them, 23 (92%) reported the hands-on training was very useful or useful. Among 91 home-buyers and rental home owners who attended workshops offered by the Neighborhood Association, 90% mentioned that the training was useful or very useful. An online visual training was given to 220 realtors, and 75 inspectors, contractors, and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) workers. At posttest, 59.4%, 67.9%, 65.1% of the realtors, inspectors, contractors and DIY workers (n = 295) identified soil, car batteries and paint as sources of lead in the environment, respectively. A total of 62.3%, 48.1% and 58.5%, at posttest, identified three complications - behavioral, physical and psychological, respectively. The mean posttest score was significantly higher than the pretest scores (7.47 ± 2.07 vs. 6.60 ± 1.68, p = 0.04, respectively). AbstractThe post-mortem inspection of domestic pigs within the European Union was revised in 2014, primarily to include visual meat inspection of each carcase and offal. Palpations and incisions were removed from routine meat inspection procedures, as they are mostly used to detect pathological lesions caused by organisms irrelevant for public health, and instead can cause cross-contamination of carcases with foodborne pathogens. However, examination of all external surfaces of the carcase and organs, declaration of patho-physiological lesions as unfit for human consumption, and possibility for minimal handling of carcases and offals were held in place. In addition, the European Food Safety Authority suggested that palpation and incisions should be performed outside the slaughter line, but this was not incorporated in the revised legislation. We surveyed in 2014 the opinions of meat inspectors and veterinarians using an online questionnaire to determine what practical measures are required for the visual meat inspection procedure and when meat inspection staff consider additional palpations and incisions necessary. Based on the survey, turning the carcase and organs or technical arrangements such as mirrors were seen necessary to view all external surfaces. In addition, the pluck set cannot be trimmed on the side line. Local lesions, such as abscesses and lesions in the lymph nodes, signs of systemic infection and lymphoma, were the major lesions requiring additional post-mortem meat inspection procedures. Meat inspection personnel raised concerns on the poor quality of food chain information and export requirements demanding palpations and incisions. The efficient use of visual meat inspection requires legislation to better support the implementation and application of it, changes in the slaughter line layout and a possibility to classify incoming pig batches based on their risk.

This paper aims to investigate orbital drilling process in carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites with multi-point orbital drilling tool based on the robot automatic drilling system. One orthogonal experiment has been carried out, and the cutting forces of different parameters were measured online by dynamometer. Furthermore, the cutting force model was established through regression analysis, and the impacts of cutting parameters on thrust force were deeply analyzed. In addition, delamination and tear defects were inspected respectively, and the relationship between thrust force and delamination and tear was discussed. Our results indicate that thrust force increased with the increasing feed rate and axial feed depth, while decreased with the increasing spindle speed. Axial feed depth was found as the predominant factor on thrust force and defects. At last, the cutting parameters was optimized and then thrust force decreased more than 26% with almost none tear and burr around the hole, which indicates a better machine quality.

Context: The social context of COVID-19 forced everyone to social distancing. This had an impact on the way people way of living. The education system is no exception. The main “actors” were put in a challenging situation. They were faced with implementing distance learning in an environment that has not been fully prepared for this. Objectives: This paper proposes to investigate the primary education’s “actors” (inspectors, teachers, parents) opinions regarding the Romanian educational system and identify the struggles they faced in the beginning of Covid-19 context. Method: This article uses an analysis of the comments on subjects regarding the transition from the classroom to home, published on platforms related to education to portrait better the context and struggles of implementing online learning in a system not fully prepared. Results: As a result, the paper highlights the struggles of implementing distance learning for primary schools at this moment. Conclusion: This paper highlights the challenges that must be overcome to have an educational system that can support distance learning for young children.

Aims Total joint replacement (TJR) is a high-cost, high-volume procedure that impacts patients’ quality of life. Informed decisions are important for patients facing TJR. The quality of information provided by websites regarding TJR is highly variable. We aimed to measure the quality of TJR information online. Methods We identified 10,800 websites using 18 TJR-related keywords (conditions and procedures) across the Australian, French, German and Spanish Google search engines. We used the Health on the Net (HON) toolbar to evaluate the first 150 websites downloaded for every keyword in each language. The quality of information on websites was inspected, accounting for differences by language and tertiles. We also undertook an analysis of English websites to explore types of website providers. Results ‘Total joint replacement’ had the most results returned (150 million websites), and 9% of websites are HON-accredited. Differences in information quality were seen across search terms (p < 0.001) and tertiles (p < 0.001), but not between languages (p = 0.226). A larger proportion of HON-accredited websites were seen from keywords in the condition and arthroplasty categories. The first tertile contained the highest number of HON-accredited websites for the majority of search terms. Government/educational bodies sponsored the majority of websites. Conclusion Clinicians must consider the shortage of websites providing validated information, with disparities in both number and quality of websites for TJR conditions and procedures. As such, the challenge for clinicians is to lead the design of reliable, accurate and ethical orthopaedic websites online and direct patients to them. This stands to reward both parties greatly.

Aims Total joint replacement (TJR) is a high-cost, high-volume procedure that impacts patients’ quality of life. Informed decisions are important for patients facing TJR. The quality of information provided by websites regarding TJR is highly variable. We aimed to measure the quality of TJR information online. Methods We identified 10,800 websites using 18 TJR-related keywords (conditions and procedures) across the Australian, French, German and Spanish Google search engines. We used the Health on the Net (HON) toolbar to evaluate the first 150 websites downloaded for every keyword in each language. The quality of information on websites was inspected, accounting for differences by language and tertiles. We also undertook an analysis of English websites to explore types of website providers. Results ‘Total joint replacement’ had the most results returned (150 million websites), and 9% of websites are HON-accredited. Differences in information quality were seen across search terms (p < 0.001) and tertiles (p < 0.001), but not between languages (p = 0.226). A larger proportion of HON-accredited websites were seen from keywords in the condition and arthroplasty categories. The first tertile contained the highest number of HON-accredited websites for the majority of search terms. Government/educational bodies sponsored the majority of websites. Conclusion Clinicians must consider the shortage of websites providing validated information, with disparities in both number and quality of websites for TJR conditions and procedures. As such, the challenge for clinicians is to lead the design of reliable, accurate and ethical orthopaedic websites online and direct patients to them. This stands to reward both parties greatly.

Environmental Public Health Professionals (EPHPs) have been playing a significant role in the COVID-19 pandemic response. This study examines the lived experiences of EPHPs during the COVID-19 pandemic and explores short- and long long-term strategies to address the challenges of EPHPs. A mixed-method, cross-sectional online survey was conducted in May 2020. The participants were the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors certified EPHPs who currently work in Canada during the pandemic. The study results reveal that EPHPs have been heavily involved in the COVID-19 pandemic response by assuming different roles and tasks in many cases. The study highlights the vast array of EPHPs functions such as education and enforcement. Lack of employer support for training and access to safety equipment are among the significant outcomes. Mechanisms should be developed to ensure that mental health support is accessible for EPHPs to overcome the pandemic work’s challenges. As this is the first study to examine the lived experiences of EPHPs during the COVID-19 pandemic, further in-depth qualitative research should be conducted to examine the experiences of EPHPs at the local level.

Remote inspection is critical for smart factories, power systems and undersea and space exploration, among other domains. However, these applications have conflicting requirements: operators should experience high situation-awareness, implying a considerable amount of data to be presented, while having a minimal sensory load, not to compromise the time to make decisions. Recent research suggests computer vision inspection and the adoption of virtual reality (VR) as an alternative to traditional SCADA interfaces. Nevertheless, although VR may provide a good representation of a substation’s state, it lacks some real-time information, available from online field cameras and microphones. This work discusses a method to augment virtual environments of power substations with field images, enabling operators to promptly see a virtual representation of the inspected area’s surroundings. In addition, the system interacts with a SCADA database, continuously comparing the equipment states against the ones inferred by processing the field images. Whenever a discrepancy is found, a virtual camera can be teleported to the affected region, speeding up system reestablishment. Our results concern the registration accuracy and performance impact for a simple scenario. The collected metrics suggest good registration levels and low impact on real-time rendering performance.

Text complexity as a research problem is equally relevant in linguistics and education since its solution provides an algorithm to match readers of certain categories to texts. Numerous studies have been conducted to identify quantitative and qualitative parameters that affect text complexity in ESOL. However, text complexity range within one proficiency level remains a research niche. The current study is aimed at identifying the range of text complexity fluctuations within one proficiency level and their appropriateness for readers. We conduct a multi-factor analysis and contrast 66 English texts for Basic State Examination (OGE) in readability, average sentence length, word length, number of verbs and nouns, cohesion and lexical diversity. The text features computed with the two online services, Text Inspector and Coh-Metrix, provide slightly different quantitative results though consistent in qualifying the range of text complexity fluctuations as high. The research findings refute the hypothesis of a linear nature of text complexity growth in the textbooks designed to increase students’ proficiency and confirm the lack of correlation between the revealed and claimed complexity of texts. The algorithm suggested by the authors can be useful for textbook writers and test developers selecting reading material for any proficiency level.

Multiple investigations have reported high psychological distress among students since the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak started. This survey examined the associations between psychological features, and several demographic and social factors among dental students in German universities. Dental students registered in German universities nationwide were asked to join this survey via a self-directed online questionnaire, from July 2020 to January 2021. This study assembled data on demographic statistics, the depression anxiety stress scales (DASS-21), and the impact of events scale—revised (IES-R) instrument. The relationships between demographic-related variables and mental consequences of depression, anxiety, stress, intrusion, avoidance, and hyperarousal were inspected. Two hundred and eleven students contributed to the questionnaire and conveyed overall normal or mild outcomes of depression, anxiety, stress, intrusion, avoidance, and hyperarousal. In addition, female gender, cardiovascular diseases, smoking habits, and seeing the COVID-19 outbreak as a financial risk were stated as significant related factors (p < 0.05), with increased IES-R and DASS-21 scores. These results highlight the features that should be considered to better protect dental students’ mental health in German universities during the crisis.

According to the acousto elastic effect, the residual stress on the surface of the rail can be evaluated by measuring the change in the propagation velocity of ultrasonic waves, such as longitudinal critically refracted (LCR) waves on the surface of the rail. The LCR wave signal is often polluted by a variety of noise sources, coupled with the influence of the poor surface condition of the inspected component, which greatly reduces the detectability and online measurement ability of the LCR wave signal. This paper proposes the application of the lifting scheme wavelet packet transform (LSWPT) denoising method to solve the noise suppression problem of LCR wave signal. The traditional wavelet transform (WT), wavelet packet transform (WPT), as well as the lifting scheme wavelet transform (LSWT) and lifting scheme wavelet packet transform are compared and analyzed in the soft thresholding and hard thresholding processing of denoising ability and efficiency of the noisy LCR wave signal. The experimental results show that the LSWPT method has the characteristics of fast calculation speed and a good denoising effect, and it is an efficient method of denoising signals for on-line ultrasonic measurement of residual stress on the rail surface.

Internationally, the most widely used self-report instrument to assess alexithymia (a clinical condition characterized by serious deficits in the cognitive processing of emotions) is the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Because this measure has been poorly investigated in Brazil and emerging research suggests that TAS-20 scores might vary from one culture to another, we sought to: (1) investigate the psychometric properties of a Brazilian TAS-20; and (2) examine the degree to which Brazilian non-clinical TAS-20 scores differ from the scores of non-clinical samples from other cultures. A sample of 850 non-clinical Brazilian adults were administered a number of questionnaires and performance-based measures via online data collection. Data analyses inspected internal consistency and factor structure of the TAS-20, and tested the association of TAS-20 scores to emotional functioning and psychopathology. In line with previous international research, the Brazilian TAS-20 showed acceptable to adequate psychometric properties. Furthermore, TAS-20 scores associated negatively with empathy and emotional perception, and positively with emotion dysregulation and personality traits like dependency, abrupt changes in mood, and avoidance of criticism. Also noteworthy, our non-clinical Brazilian TAS-20 scores were very similar to those observed in other previously published non-clinical TAS-20 scores from seven non-Brazilian cultures.

Low-grade gliomas (LGGs) is a primary invasive brain tumor that grows slowly but is incurable and eventually develops into high malignant glioma. Novel biomarkers for the tumorigenesis and lifetime of LGG are critically demanded to be investigated. In this study, the expression levels of procollagen-lysine, 2-oxoglutarate 5-dioxygenases (PLODs) were analyzed by ONCOMINE, HPA and GEPIA. The GEPIA online platform was applied to evaluate the interrelation between PLODs and survival index in LGG. Furthermore, functions of PLODs and co-expression genes were inspected by the DAVID. Moreover, we used TIMER, cBioportal, GeneMINIA and NetworkAnalyst analysis to reveal the mechanism of PLODs in LGG. We found that expression levels of each PLOD family members were up-regulated in patients with LGG. Higher expression of PLODs was closely related to shorter disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). The findings showed that LGG cases with or without alterations were significantly correlated with the OS and DFS. The mechanism of PLODs in LGG may be involved in response to hypoxia, oxidoreductase activity, Lysine degradation and immune cell infiltration. In general, this research has investigated the values of PLODs in LGG, which could serve as biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis and potential therapeutic targets of LGG patients.

AbstractThe molecular imprinting of proteins is the process of forming biomimetics with entailed protein-recognition by means of a template-assisted synthesis. Protein-imprinted polymers (pMIPs) have been successfully employed in separations, assays, sensors, and imaging. From a technical point of view, imprinting a protein is both costly, for protein expression and purification, and challenging, for the preservation of the protein’s structural properties. In fact, the imprinting process needs to guarantee the preservation of the same protein three-dimensional conformation that later would be recognized. So far, the captivating idea to imprint just a portion of the protein, i.e., an epitope, instead of the whole, proved successful, offering reduced costs, compatibility with many synthetic conditions (solvents, pH, temperatures), and fine-tuning of the peptide sequence so to target specific physiological and functional conditions of the protein, such as post-translational modifications. Here, protein-protein interactions and the biochemical features of the epitopes are inspected, deriving lessons to prepare more effective pMIPs. Epitopes are categorized in linear or structured, immunogenic or not, located at the protein’s surface or buried in its core and the imprinting strategies are discussed. Moreover, attention is given to freely available online bioinformatics resources that might offer key tools to gain further rationale amid the selection process of suitable epitopes templates.

Methods: Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data and test the proposed conceptual model. Findings & Value added: Mobile payment is a user-oriented manner of finalizing transactions as a result of the growing fashionableness of smartphones and the advancement of associated technologies. Superior ubiquity of mobile devices and swift mobile internet access result in higher quality offers and higher degrees of adoption of smartphones in commercial operations. Mobile retailers can raise the pool of prospective mobile purchasers by selecting individuals who are more knowledgeable in online buying and smartphone adoption. Consumers at a preliminary mobile shopping readiness stage allocate more relevance to omnipresence when compared with the habit in determining purchase intentions. After a major seismic event, structural safety inspections by qualified experts are required prior to reoccupying a building and resuming operation. Such manual inspections are generally performed by teams of two or more experts and are time consuming, labor intensive, subjective in nature, and potentially put the lives of the inspectors in danger. The authors reported previously on the system for a rapid post-earthquake safety assessment of buildings using sparse acceleration data. The proposed framework was demonstrated using simulation of a five-story steel building modeled with three-dimensional nonlinear analysis subjected to historical earthquakes. The results confirmed the potential of the proposed approach for rapid safety evaluation of buildings after seismic events. However, experimental validation on large-scale structures is required prior to field implementation. Moreover, an extension to the assessment of high-rise buildings, such as those commonly used for residences and offices in modern cities, is needed. To this end, a 1/3-scale 18-story experimental steel building tested on the shaking table at E-Defense in Japan is considered. The importance of online model updating of the linear building model used to calculate the Damage Sensitive Features (DSFs) during the operation is also discussed. Experimental results confirm the efficacy of the proposed approach for rapid post-earthquake safety evaluation for high-rise buildings. Finally, a cost-benefit analysis with respect to the number of sensors used is presented.

PURPOSE. Perform analysis of the actual heat energy consumption for cold water heating for the hot water utility to the approved standard. Compare different methods of flow control in circulation pipelines of hot water supply systems. Identify ways to improve the efficiency of hot water systems. METHODS. The passive engineering experiment was used to study the operating modes of hot water supply systems of several groups of houses, in which various methods of regulating water consumption in hot water supply systems are implemented. Data collection was carried out using the online system of control and commercial accounting of energy resources. RESULTS. Existing hot water supply systems in residential buildings of Ulyanovsk were inspected under various methods of flow control in circulation pipelines. Features of static and dynamic load control of hot water supply systems were investigated. Analysis of influence of methods of control of thermal load of hot water supply systems on their actual heat consumption was performed. The possibility of bringing the actual operation mode of hot water supply systems to the standard value, on the basis of which consumption is calculated, is estimated. CONCLUSION. Known methods of load control in hot water supply systems and their actual operating conditions do not allow to reach the level of heat consumption that meets the established standards. Conclusions were drawn on the need to revise the regulated indicators of hot water quality and to adjust the method of calculating consumption in hot water supply systems.
