The mortuary roll of John Islip (1464–1532), Abbot of Westminster, is the finest example of its kind to survive in England. The drawings, possibly by Gerard Horenbout, afford the only views of the interior of Westminster Abbey before the Dissolution. The discovery of eighteenth-century copies of an unknown, coloured version of the roll provides important new evidence for both the circumstances of the production and the later history of both rolls. It also provides, for the first time, an authentic colour view of the interior of Westminster Abbey in the late medieval period, and new information

AbstractOur ideas of what 17th century Dutch interiors looked like have been conditioned by the hundreds of paintings of interiors by Dutch genre painters. Even restorations and reconstructions in our own time (fig. 1) are influenced significantly by them. It is therefore of vital importance to our knowledge of the history of Dutch interior decoration to realise what we can or cannot believe, and to compare these genre interiors with other sources such as probate inventories, building specifications, plans, conditions of sale, contemporary descriptions such as travellers' reports, etc. It is t

These tiles come in diverse colors, textures, and profiles. The earliest instances of ceramic tile production trace back to the Middle East, dating back several centuries BC. Following the Roman conquest of these regions, the production technology spread to Europe. Nevertheless, this artistic form disappeared from European soil in the early Middle Ages, only to resurface on a larger scale in the 17th century in the Netherlands. Meanwhile, the Middle Eas

This thesis explores the state apartment in the Jacobean country house – its status, function, use, planning, decoration and furnishing. It does so against various different backgrounds. Firstly, that of the royal progress, during which Tudor and early Stuart monarchs – in particular, James I – would visit private residences around the country. The nature of such visits are explored, using a large amount of primary evidence and drawing upon a full itinerary of James I's reign, compiled for the first time as part of this thesis. A different context, that of royal palaces, is then considered, pa

George occasionally lorded it over his younger brother Russell as they grew up in the idyllic New England town of Great Barrington in the Berkshires where their father, Joseph Russell Lynes, was rector of St. James Episcopal Church.
