The conceptualization of the personality construct of introversion has been problematic since the term s inception due to the complexity and seemingly self-contradictory nature of the collection of attributes of which it is comprised. To advance the understanding of introversion, I propose that it is a continuous segment of the non-clinical part of the autism spectrum, and that it is not the same as the inverse of extraversion. When introversion and autism are placed on the same continuum, the nature of the relationship of the traits becomes more apparent, and new possibilities are available for exploration of both autism and introversion. This review of literature traces the origins and development of the concept of introversion and places it on the autism spectrum, demonstrating the apparent synonymous nature of the traits despite varying degrees of severity in expression. The current factorial structure of introversion demonstrates how autistic features interact to produce the personality dimension. Other factors, including genetic predisposition, relationships to the clinical and non-clinical symptoms of schizophrenia spectrum expression, and neurological findings that support the correlation will be considered. Finally, suggestions for future research and possible theoretical and empirical implications and applications are explored.

Syftet med den här studien var att undersöka om faktorerna ångest som state, ångest som trait samt introversion kunde predicera skolfrånvaro under en kortare samt längre tid hos 156 gymnasieungdomar i årskurs två och tre. Enligt tidigare forskning har man kunnat se att dessa faktorer kan leda till skolfrånvaro, men då i första hand hos yngre individer. Studien genomfördes med en enkät som var baserad på Eysencks EPQ-R (Eysencks Personality Questionnaire) samt STAI (State-Traite Anxiety Inventory) (Form Y). I enkäten fanns också en demografisk del samt en egenkonstruerad del för att mäta frånvaro. Resultaten visade att ångest som state, ångest som trait samt introversion tillsammans kunde predicera frånvaro med 50.7% för en kortare period samt med 55.2% för en längre period. Enskilt predicerade ångest som state 38.2%, ångest som trait 34.9% och introversion 2% av frånvaron förhöstterminen.

This thesis deals with three writers, George Gissing, Edmund Gosse and Robert Louis Stevenson. I use the words "introversion" and "extroversion" partly in a geographical sense. George Gissing, for example, in spite of Continental influences remained a very English (in some ways almost insular) novelist, and in that sense an introvert. Edmund Gosse, on the other hand, was a very cosmopolitan critic although his style was typically English. Robert Louis Stevenson provides a third angle. Having been born in Edinburgh he was forced into exile for most of his life, and obviously this had a great effect on his writings. Of the three writers most weight is given to Edmund Gosse. In my analysis of George Gissing I concentrate on some of his best known novels, The Unclassed, The Nether World, New Grub Street and Born in Exile. The Emancipated and By the Ionian Sea deal specifically with Italy. There are four chapters on Edmund Gosse. The first concentrates on the early part of his long career when his main interest was Scandinavian literature. The next two chapters give an account of his impressions of and writings on America and France. In the fourth chapter on Edmund Gosse I concentrate on the part of his career when he had become an established authority on his own country's literature. Robert Louis Stevenson, too, is dealt with in four chapters. First I write briefly about his Scottish works, all inspired by his childhood and youth. Next I deal with his two favourite countries, France and the United States, both associated with his Wife, Fanny. The last chapter follows Stevenson to the South Seas where he spent the last few years of his life and wrote some of his best books. The three writers are compared from time to time. Robert Louis Stevenson and Edmund Gosse knew each other well; George Gissing is the odd man out. But his reaction to foreign influences differs from that of the other two and this makes a comparison very interesting.

Resumen
Variation exists regarding understandings of the personality trait introversion. This thesis aimed to explore how ordinary people define and experience introversion. Three studies were conducted which explored: 1) participants’ understandings of introversion; 2) differences in how people who identified as introverted, ambiverted (a bit of both), or extraverted described introverts; and 3) self-identified introverts’ descriptions of a broad range of experiences in their own lives. The findings of this research indicated that further efforts are needed to develop additional clarity and agreement across both scientific and common-sense views as to what introversion represents.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the tenability of three research assumptions. The first assumption is that Person-Thing Orientation and Introversion-Extraversion are synonymous traits. The second assumption is that Science populations, especially Physical Science populations, are less oriented to people and more oriented to things than are Social Science populations. The third assumption is that Science populations, particularly Physical Science populations, are more introverted than are Social Science populations.
These three assumptions were tested using Pure and Applied Science, Health Science, and Social Science-Commerce junior college (CEGEP) students. Measures of Person-Thing Orientation and Introversion-Extraversion were employed. the Person-Thing Orientation measure was constructed and validated by the present author. The Introversion-Extraversion measure came from the Goldberg (1992) 100 Adjective Checklist.
Results indicated that Person-Thing Orientation and Introversion-Extraversion appeared to be independent rather than synonymous traits. Also, Pure and Applied Science, Health Science, and Social Science-Commerce students could not be differentiated on the variable of Person-Thing Orientation. These student groups were differentiated on Introversion-Extraversion, but not in the predicted manner. Methodological limitations and potential issues for future research were subsequently addressed.

Cardiovascular risk factors have expanded to include personality and other psychological characteristics. Negative affect (NA) has a longstanding history in cardiovascular health, but the path by which NA leads to cardiovascular disease (CVD) is yet to be defined. The following study examined the relationship of high NA and low extroversion (EX) with physiological cardiovascular markers in a sample of non-medical, professional adults. Our results indicated that individuals high in NA and low in EX displayed a significantly lower platelet count and a significantly higher mean platelet volume. Individuals high in NA displayed a significantly lower cholesterol risk ratio, while individuals high in EX displayed significantly higher platelet counts. Personality was not significantly related to blood pressure, high or low density lipoproteins. Understanding the relationships among psychological variables and physiological markers will help clinical researchers design interventions that reduce the likelihood of CVD.

För att uppnå självförverkligande är det generellt fördelaktigt att vara initiativtagande,utåtriktad och pratglad, snarare än tillbakadragen, tystlåten och eftertänksam. Har dessa olikapersonlighetsegenskaper betydelse för människors välmående? Syftet med denna studie varatt undersöka 1) om personlighetsdraget extroversion-introversion kan förklaralivstillfredsställelse och känsla av sammanhang (KASAM) hos svenska studenter och 2) omKASAM har en modererande effekt på sambandet mellan extroversion-introversion ochlivstillfredställelse. En enkätundersökning utfördes med 163 svenska universitetsstudenter.Resultatet av regressionsanalyser visade att extroversion predicerar både livstillfredsställelseoch KASAM, och att KASAM har en modererande effekt på sambandet mellan extroversionoch livstillfredsställelse. Vi kan dra slutsatsen att extroverta personer känner högrelivstillfredsställelse, och att hög KASAM har en modererande effekt på detta samband. Merspecifikt, att extroverta personer med hög KASAM, troligen också känner höglivstillfredsställelse. Huruvida man är utåtriktad eller tillbakadragen har således betydelse förmänniskors välmående.

En l'experiència clínica, els foniatres i logopedes especialitzats en trastorns de la veu han afirmat que les disfonies tenen relació amb la personalitat del pacient. Estudis previs de Roy i Bless indiquen una relació entre els trets de personalitat neuroticisme i extraversió, definits per Eysenck, i les disfonies funcionals i els nòduls vocals. Aquests estudis proposen que les teories de Gray poden explicar aquesta relació. Gray proposa l'existència de dos sistemes biològics d'activació i d'inhibició conductual que responen a una major sensibilitat del subjecte a les recompenses i els càstigs, respectivament. El 2011, Torrubia et al. presenten, un qüestionari per a la valoració d'aquests dos sistemes. Partint dels treballs de Roy i Bless, l'estudi que presentem pretén aportar evidències sobre la influència dels trets de personalitat en la presència d'alteracions de la veu. S'han administrat els qüestionaris EPQ-RS d'Eysenck i SCSRQ de Torrubia a un grup experimental de 141 pacients atesos per alteracions de la veu i ha un grup control de 99 persones sense alteracions vocals. A tots ells se'ls va administrar també el qüestionari Voice Handicap Index-10 i es van recollir diverses mostres de la seva veu que van ser analitzades amb el programa MDVP per obtenir el paràmetre Dysphonia Severity Index descrit per Wuyts, i van ser valorades amb el paràmetre Grade del GRBAS d'Hirano per cinc logopedes experts en alteracions vocals. Els resultats han estat analitzats amb el paquet estadístic PASW 18. Els resultats mostren diferències estadísticament significatives entre el grup experimental i el grup control en relació al tret neuroticisme en el test EPQ (z = 6.951, p <.01) i en relació a la sensibilitat al càstig en el test SCSRQ (z = 2.207; p <.05). Les dades mostren també diferències estadísticament significatives entre els dos grups pel que fa als valors del DSI (z = 9.320, p <.01). Per a aquesta mesura s'ha establert un valor de tall, amb la corba ROC, en la puntuació 3.7. També s'han obtingut diferències significatives en les puntuacions totals del VHI-10 (z = 10.351, p <.001) i un valor de tall de 7. El paràmetre G ha presentat diferències significatives (z = 10.959, p <.001) i un valor de tall en la puntuació 1. Les tres mesures de la disfonia correlacionen amb els resultats dels qüestionaris de personalitat per als trets neuroticisme (DSI rs = -. 437, p> .001; VHI-10 rs =.416, p> .001; paràmetre G rs = .446, p> .001) i sensibilitat al càstig (VHI-10 rs = .231, p> .01; paràmetre G rs = .144, p> .05). Els resultats confirmen les informacions aportades per investigacions anteriors respecte a la influència del neuroticisme en la disfonia. En el mateix sentit, podem concloure que el tret introversió està més present en la població amb alteracions de la veu. Els resultats de l'escala de sensibilitat al càstig permeten pensar que les teories de Gray poden orientar sobre els factors emocionals en les alteracions vocals. Així mateix, els resultats permeten concloure que els instruments de mesura de la qualitat vocal són fiables, complementaris i vàlids per a la discriminació de persones que pateixen alteracions de la veu.

In clinical experience, phoniatricians and speech therapists who specialize in voice disorders have argued that dysphonia is related to the patient's personality. Previous studies by Roy and Bless indicate a relationship between the personality traits neuroticism and extraversion, defined by Eysenck, and functional dysphonia and vocal nodules. These studies suggest that Gray's theories can explain this relationship. Gray proposes the existence of two biological systems of activation and behavioral inhibition, which respond to increased sensitivity of the subject to reward and punishment, respectively. In 2011, Torrubia et al. presented a questionnaire for the assessment of these two systems. Based on the work of Roy and Bless, the study presented aims to provide evidence on the influence of personality traits in the presence of voice disorders. Administered questionnaires were Eysenck's EPQ-RS and SCSRQ of Torrubia to an experimental group of 141 patients with voice disorders and a control group of 99 people with no vocal alterations. All of them answered the Voice Handicap Index-10 questionnaire and several samples of their voices were analyzed with the MDVP program so as to obtain Dysphonia Severity Index parameter described by Wuyts. These samples were evaluated with the parameter Grade of Hirano’s GRBAS by five speech pathologists specialized in voice disorders. The results were analyzed using the statistical package PASW 18. The results showed statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups in relation to trait neuroticism on the EPQ test (z = 6951, p <.01) and in relation to sensitivity to punishment in SCSRQ test (z = 2207; p <.05). The data also showed statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding DSI values (z = 9320, p <.01). For this measure cutoff with ROC curve has been established in the score 3.7. Significant differences were also obtained in total scores of HIV-10 (z = 10,351, p <.001) and a cutoff value of 7. The parameter G has presented significant differences (z = 10,959, p <.001) and a cutoff in the score 1. All three measures of dysphonia correlated with the results of the questionnaires of personality traits neuroticism (r = -. 437 DSI, p> .001; VHI-10 r = .416, p> .001; parameter G r = .446, p <.001) and sensitivity to punishment (VHI-10 r = .231, p> 0.01; parameter G r = .144, p> .05). The results confirm the information provided by previous research on the influence of neuroticism in dysphonia. Also, we can conclude that introversion trait is more present in people with voice disorders. The relationship between the results of the sensitivity scale to punishment suggests that Gray's theories can shed some light on emotional factors in voice disorders. Finally, the results suggest that measurement instruments used for voice quality are reliable, complementary and valid for the discrimination of people with voice disorders.

Loneliness in caregivers of Alzheimer's family members was examined through the use of an explanatory model. Stepwise multiple regression was used to test the association between characterological variables (introversion and control), situational variables (social support), demographics (income), and self-reported loneliness in a statewide mail survey of 190 caregivers. Results indicated that introversion, control, social support, and income account for almost two-thirds of the variance in loneliness. An interesting finding was that higher income was associated with higher levels of loneliness in the caregivers. Implications for practice are discussed and recommendations for future research are suggested.

‘Survival of the fittest’ aptly describes the work environment. Employees and the organisations for which they work are therefore required to have various skills sets to afford them a competitive advantage in the job market. This is one of the many reasons why private and public organisations make use of the assessment center, and specifically the behaviour observation exercise to evaluate and select future personnel. Although the behaviour observation exercise provides the rater with rich information regarding a candidate’s skills, rater errors that are often inadvertent can result from a rater’s inherent subjectivity. One such error, central to this study, is Introversion/Extraversion bias. This type of bias plays out when raters rate candidates with personality types similar to their own more favorably than other candidates when the candidate’s degree of introversion or extraversion should not be considered relevant to the selection criteria. This study aims to explore the effect of Introversion/Extraversion bias on the scores of behaviour observation exercises performed during a leadership assessment center in a security environment. The sample consists of 103 participants (14 raters and 89 candidates) all belonging to the same security organisation. The researcher conducts a cross-sectional, non-experimental field study. Candidate as well as rater Introversion/Extraversion preferences are measured by the Jung Personality Questionnaire (JPQ). The scores of two behaviour observation exercises are used to explore the interaction effect between rater Introversion/Extraversion and candidate Introversion/Extraversion. Point-biserial correlations, independent t-tests as well as a one-way ANOVA are used to test the hypotheses. No interaction effect is identified between rater Introversion/Extraversion and candidate Introversion/Extraversion, indicating that raters did not score candidates with similar personality types to their own more favorably. However, the results indicate that extraverted candidates were rated higher by both introverted and extraverted raters and are consequently perceived to have performed better in both behaviour observation exercises. The study postulates that the nature of the exercises, which require high levels of engagement with fellow team members (a typical strength of extraverts), is one of the main contributors to the perception that extraverted individuals are better performers. The results of this study not only contribute to the lacuna in research on the topic, but also to the development of an unbiased behaviour observation exercise within this security organisation. This study investigated the effects of extraversion and maintenance strategy choice on perceived relational satisfaction in marital dyads. Three research questions were addressed in this study. RQ #1 examined the relationship between extraversion and maintenance strategy preference. RQ #2 examined the various introvert/extravert (i/e) combinations to determine if satisfaction was reported higher or lower in any of the dyad combinations. RQ #3 investigated the correlation between maintenance strategy choice and satisfaction. Participants (71 married couples with diverse ages and lengths of marriage) were administered three measures for evaluation: a marital satisfaction measure, an i/e measure, and a maintenance strategy assessment. It was anticipated that individuals characterized by different degrees of extraversion would rely on different relational maintenance strategies to restore marital equity. Out of five groupings of relational maintenance strategies (assurances, positivity, reliance on social networks, openness, and sharing tasks), a statistically significant correlation was found to exist only between extraversion and reliance on social networks. The correlation suggests that the more extraverted a person is, the more he/she will attempt to use communication and disclosure techniques with common friends and family to help maintain the marital relationship. Within the context of reported marital satisfaction, no statistically significant differences were found to exist between any of the four marital pairings for i!e in marital dyads. This finding informs us that marital satisfaction, in and of itself, does not appear to have any significant relationship to the i/e dynamic. Finally, three of the maintenance strategies (positivity, networking, and assurances) were significantly correlated with marital satisfaction. The assurances strategy, in particular, was an especially strong correlate, revealing that couples who use assuring maintenance strategies in their communication report higher satisfaction in their marriages.

The problem of this study was the determination of the relationship between Myers-Briggs personality temperament and extraversion-introversion, and group counseling norms, as reflected by the group counseling outcome measures: Survey of Attraction to Group, self and leader-report Interpersonal Relationship Rating Scale (IRRS), and Sociometric Choice Status Survey. The Mvers-Briggs Temperament Indicator (MBTI) and the four outcome measures were administered to a sample population of 103 graduate and undergraduate counselor education students after completion of a semester-long group counseling experience. Fifteen groups of five to nine members were surveyed. It was expected that group members whose temperaments were compatible with group counseling norms would be more likely to receive confirmation, support, and acceptance in the group, be attracted to the group, receive higher leader and self-report ratings of interpersonal skills, and be more highly valued by other members than would members whose temperaments were incompatible with group norms. It was also thought that extraverts were more likely to be attracted to the group, receive higher self and leader ratings of interpersonal skills, and to be more highly valued by other members than were introverts. No significant relationship was found between temperament and the four outcome measures. Possible explanations for this finding were discussed. However, mean scores for extraverts were significantly higher than mean scores for introverts on the Survey of Attraction to Group and leader-report interpersonal Relationship Rating Scale instruments. A related finding was that the NF temperament was overrepresented in the sample population of counselor education students by a factor of four. The INFP type was overrepresented by a factor of 16.5, and the ENFP type had the highest frequency of occurrence. Together, INFPs and ENFPs constituted 34 percent of the sample. In the general population, INFPs and ENFPs would be expected to account for only six percent of the total.

The aim of this thesis is to examine preferences for personality traits within the spectrum of extroversion and introversion. Based on previous research, the hypothesis of this study was that extroversion was valued higher than introversion. The differences between men and women’s preferences were also examined. The material being used was based on research on the fundamental lexical hypothesis and its semantic similarity to the Big Five. Seventy two students filled in a questionnaire where they were asked to rate 18 personality adjectives as positive or negative. The results indicate a preference for extroversion which supports the hypothesis. However, no significant difference between men and women could assuredly be established.
Syftet med detta examensarbete är att undersöka preferenser för personlighetsdrag inom spektret extroversion och introversion. Med utgångspunkt från tidigare studier ställdes hypotesen att extroversion värderas högre än introversion. Dessutom undersöktes om preferenserna skiljer mellan kvinnor och män. Materialet som användes var baserad på studier om den fundamentala lexikala hypotesen och dess semantiska likhet till the Big Five. Sjuttiotvå studenter fick besvara en enkät där de ombads bedöma 18 personlighetsadjektiv som positiva eller negativa. Resultatet visar en generell preferens för extroverta personlighetsadjektiv vilket stödjer studiens hypotes. Någon säker skillnad mellan mäns och kvinnors preferenser gick inte att iaktta.

In this research, four models of systems that allow estimating the extraversion introversion and nevrosism are compared: self-observation system with no instrument, self. Prior research has found a connection between dispositional factors such as rejection sensitivity and introversion and online dating behaviors including likelihood of use (Blackhart et al., 2014) and experience of use (Finkel et al., 2012; Whitty, 2008). The present study expands upon prior research to examine the relationship between these dispositional factors, and the impact of the possibility of explicit rejection on self-disclosure in participant-created dating app profiles. Adults between the ages of 18 and 60 will be introduced to an online dating app manipulated to contain either high or low potential for obvious rejection. Participants will then be asked to create a personal online profile. Participant perceptions of their own self-disclosure in the self-created profile as well as their disposition (introversion and rejection sensitivity) will be measured. It is hypothesized that rejection sensitive individuals as well as those rating lower in extraversion will report higher levels of self-disclosure in a non-explicit rejection dating app setting in comparison to an explicit rejection setting. The present research has implications for the field’s understanding of the experience of online dating app use for individuals as related to varying dispositional factors.

O Câncer de Esôfago é uma das neoplasias mais agressivas do trato gastrointestinal; é considerado como a nona neoplasia mais comum no mundo, além de ter altas taxas de mortalidade. A doença pode ser desencadeada por hábitos de vida, tais como etilismo e tabagismo, e também por fatores intrínsecos ao indivíduo. De todo modo, interfere significativamente em vários setores da vida do sujeito. Uma doença como o câncer pode conter uma tentativa simbólica para compensar uma atitude unilateral do indivíduo, ao relacionar-se com o ambiente e consigo mesmo. Acredita-se que conhecer aspectos do funcionamento e da dinâmica psíquica do sujeito pode contribuir para o foco do tratamento psicológico, de forma a propiciar intervenções psicológicas precoces e a auxiliar as demais equipes assistenciais nos cuidados e no modo de interação com o paciente. Entre elementos da estrutura psíquica do sujeito, buscou-se a tipologia psicológica dos referidos pacientes; para tanto, foi utilizado o Questionário de avaliação tipológica - QUATI (Zacharias, 2003). Além disso, valemo-nos de aspectos contidos na avaliação psicológica, rotina da instituição, com a finalidade de acessarmos as particularidades de cada um dos pacientes, especialmente no que se refere à reação ao diagnóstico e ao significado atribuído à doença. O estudo pode ser considerado como transversal, exploratório e descritivo. Foram incluídos 90 pacientes, derivados de análise estatística. Foram sujeitos da pesquisa pacientes maiores de 18 anos com diagnóstico de câncer de esôfago; com ensino fundamental completo; virgens de tratamento; atendidos em primeira consulta, no ambulatório de cirurgia do aparelho digestivo, do Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo (ICESP-HCFMUSP). Encontramos esses pacientes em sala de espera da consulta médica, onde foram informados sobre o objetivo da pesquisa; e, àqueles que aceitaram participar, foi aplicado o termo de consentimento livre e esclarecido, seguido da avaliação psicológica (rotina da instituição) e aplicação do instrumento. Os resultados indicaram que a maior parte da nossa amostra tem uma atitude introvertida. O tipo psicológico mais comum foi o introvertido sensação, com função auxiliar sentimento. A partir da avaliação psicológica, constatou-se uma variedade de mecanismos defensivos para minimização da angústia. A grande parte dos pacientes valeu-se de defesas adaptativas diante do processo de adoecimento. Conclui-se que, no atendimento com esses pacientes, torna-se necessária uma postura prática e objetiva dos profissionais de saúde, em que se busque fornecer orientações com base na realidade dos pacientes, assim como ter um modo de agir empático, com o estabelecimento de vínculo significativo, mas respeitando os limites dos pacientes, sobretudo ao que se refere à forma reservada e introspectiva de interagirem com o mundo e com as pessoas que os cercam
Esophageal cancer is one of the most aggressive neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, and can be triggered by life habits such as alcoholism and smoking and factors intrinsic to the individual. A disease such as cancer can hold a symbolic attempt to compensate for a onesided attitude of the individual. It is believed that knowing aspects of the psychic dynamics of the person, can contribute to the focus of a psychological treatment, in order to provide early psychological interventions, as well as assisting other attending teams in the care of and interaction with the patient. Among the psychic structure elements of a subject, we looked for the psychological typology of these patients. Typological Assessment Questionnaire was used to evaluate the psychological typology. In addition, we drew on aspects from within the psychological assessment, routine of the institution, in order to access the particularities of each one of the patients, especially concerning their reaction to the diagnosis and the meaning attributed to the disease. Ninety patients were included. They were over 18 years old, having completed middle-school education, diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and interviewed during their first medical appointment at the Digestive Surgery Clinic at the Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (ICESP-HCFMUSP). We met these patients in the waiting room, where they were informed of the purpose of the survey. Those who agreed to participate, were given the terms of free and informed consent, followed by a psychological evaluation and the application of the instrument used. The results indicated a predominant introverted attitude. The most common psychological type was the introverted feeling, with feeling as a secondary function. From this psychological evaluation, we found a variety of defensive mechanisms to minimize the anguish. Most of the patients made use of adaptive defenses when facing the illness process. Therefore, when attending these patients, health professionals must have a practical and objective posture, seeking to guide the patients according to their reality. In addition, they should be empathetic in their manner, establishing significant bond, but respecting the patients\' limits, especially when it comes to their reserved and introspective way of interacting with the world and the people around them

O conhecimento de características das pessoas auxilia a individualizar a maneira de estruturar a prática de tarefas, o fornecimento de informação e a seleção de pessoas mais aptas a desempenhar certas funções. Há evidências de que essas características individuais, como traços de personalidade, podem afetar a aprendizagem de habilidades motoras. Investigar o efeito de diferentes estruturas de prática na aquisição de uma habilidade motora em indivíduos extrovertidos e introvertidos foi o objetivo deste trabalho. Noventa e seis universitários de ambos os sexos foram selecionados depois de responder o EPQ (Eysenck Personality Questionnaire). A tarefa envolveu o pressionamento seqüencial de teclas em duas fases: aquisição (108 tentativas, em três variações da tarefa, exceto os grupos de prática constante, que executaram apenas uma variação) e transferência (imediata e atrasada, cada uma com 12 tentativas). Os participantes foram alocados em seis grupos de prática, formados com a combinação do traço Extroversão/Introversão e a estrutura de prática (constante, blocos e aleatória). As medidas envolveram o erro global, o erro de timing relativo e o erro de timing absoluto. Os resultados indicaram que, além de ter havido aprendizagem da tarefa motora, o desempenho dos introvertidos em relação aos extrovertidos foi melhor no início da aquisição e pior na transferência. Conclui-se que, independentemente da estrutura de prática, as características individuais relativas à Extroversão/Introversão influenciam não só o desempenho, mas também a aprendizagem motora
The knowledge of personal characteristics aids to individualize the way practice is scheduled and information is provided, as well as to selecting better suitable people to carry out certain functions. There is evidence that these individual characteristics, for instance personality traits, might affect the learning of motor skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different practice schedules on the acquisition of a motor skill in extraverts and introverts. 96 undergraduate students were selected after answering the EPQ (Eysenck Personality Questionnaire). The task involved a sequential key-press and the design comprised two phases: acquisition (108 trials, at three task variations, except the constant groups, which performed only one variation) and transfer (immediate and delayed, 12 trials each). The participants were allocated in one of six practice groups, formed by the combination of Extraversion/Introversion trait and the practice schedule (constant, blocked and random). Measurement involved global error, relative timing error and absolute timing error. The results showed that, not only did learning occur, but also the performance of introverts, in comparison with extraverts, was higher at the beginning of acquisition and lower on transfer. As a conclusion, regardless of the practice schedule, individual characteristics of Extraversion/Introversion have influence over motor performance, as well as over motor learning

This study sought to determine if time spent engaging in online gaming, interpersonal communication skills, and introvert personality traits are predictors of an individual’s likelihood of experiencing symptoms of social anxiety. A sample of 128 participants (82 males and 46 females) completed measures of demographics, interpersonal communication skills, problematic online gaming, social anxiety, and introversion. Participants were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk. There were significant correlations among social anxiety and interpersonal communication skills, problematic online gaming, and introversion. There was no significant correlation among social anxiety and time spent playing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG), a specific form of online video game. It was also found that interpersonal communication skills, problematic online gaming, and introversion were all significant predictors of social anxiety. However, time spent playing MMORPGs was not a significant predictor of social anxiety.

Introversão. Palavra muitas vezes confundida com introspeção, ou até mesmo usada como sinónimo de timidez. Reconhecida por poucos por aquilo que realmente é: um traço de personalidade, contraponto da extroversão. Mas qual o real significado desta palavra? De que forma afeta o nosso dia-a-dia, e como podemos contribuir para a informação de um público alargado sobre este tema da psicologia da personalidade? Graças à utilização de um conjunto de metodologias não-intervencionistas e intervencionistas foi possível responder a estas questões. Através da revisão da literatura fazemos uma abordagem teórica aos temas da psicologia da personalidade e do design expositivo, disciplinas fundamentais para a compreensão destas duas vastas áreas e, por conseguinte, desta investigação. Seguidamente, utilizamos uma metodologia de carater intervencionista, começando por realizar uma breve análise crítica de casos de referência, focada em exposições cujas tipologias e temáticas poderiam ser comparáveis com a nossa, complementando, desse modo, a análise teórica com a análise prática. Procedeu-se também à escolha de um espaço concreto no qual se poderia, eventualmente, instalar a exposição, sendo que a escolha recaiu no Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (MUHNAC). O resultado destes processos foi a elaboração de uma exposição interativa sobre a introversão, projetada espacial e graficamente, e cuja modelação foi realizada digitalmente. A exposição, Why so quiet?, assume-se como uma tentativa de educar o público sobre a introversão, tornando a informação acessível e explicando-a de forma clara, direta e lúdica. Procuramos, assim, demonstrar os equívocos do paradigma do Ideal Extrovertido, assim como incentivar a procura de equilíbrio entre introvertidos e extrovertidos na sociedade ocidental atual.
ABSTRACT: Introversion. Many times mistaken for introspection, or even used as a synonym for shyness, this word is recognized by few for what it really is: a personality trait, the inverse of extraversion. But what is the real meaning of this word? In what ways does it affect our daily lives, and how can we contribute to the education of the general public about this subject of personality psychology? Thanks to a set of non-interventionist and interventionist methodologies we were able to answer these questions. A theoretical approach was made to the disciplines of personality psychology and exhibition design, fundamental subjects to the comprehension of these two vast areas, and this investigation as well. Following this step, we applied an interventionist methodology, starting by making a brief critical analysis of reference cases, focused on exhibitions which typologies and themes could be comparable to ours, complementing the theorical analysis with the practical analysis. We then proceeded to search for a physical space in which we could, eventually, install the exhibition. The final choice came to be the Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (MUHNAC). The result of these processes was the creation of an interactive exhibition about introversion, both spatial and graphically, which model was made digitally. The exhibition, Why so quiet?, comes as an attempt of educating the public about introversion, making the information accessible and explaining it in a way that is clear, direct and ludic. Hence, we aim to expose the misconceptions of the current Ideal Extrovert paradigm, as well as encourage the search for balance between introverts and extraverts in western society.

Undersökningen baserades på Facebook intensityscale, på NEO Five-factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) och på Rosenbergs (1965) self-esteemscale. Resultat visade att extraverta personer med låg självkänsla är mer känslomässigtengagerade i Facebook.

The present study assesses the effects of extraversion, empathy, and humor style on humor score, while specifically focusing on the introverted sense of humor. 129 participants recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk took a survey consisting of the extraversion subscale of the Ten Item Short Version of the Big Five Inventory, the Humor Styles Questionnaire, and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index. The study supported previous findings in which extraversion positively relates to humor such that extraverts reported a greater usage of humor than did introverts. More specifically, both extraverts and introverts use adaptive humor styles (i.e. affiliative and self-enhancing humor) more than they use maladaptive humor styles (i.e. aggressive and self-defeating humor). Additionally, empathy and humor style interact such that empathetic individuals favor adaptive humor styles while unempathetic individuals have relatively heightened usage of the maladaptive humor styles while still primarily using the adaptive humor styles, no matter the level of extraversion.

This paper details the making of Stray Cats, a University of New Orleans thesis film. It examines the process of creating the film in three parts. Part one will detail the pre-production, including the conceptualization, writing, and preparation for the project. Part two will cover the production, including the directing, production design, cinematography, and on-set operations. Part three will describe the post-production process, including the editing, color correction, sound design, and musical score. These three components will then be referenced in regards to the theme of the film, and will conclude by analyzing whether or not the final film achieves the initial vision.

The proposed study explores the cognitive miser approach to perception formation in job interviews, as well as factors that may motivate people to not act as cognitive misers. Personality type (introverted and extraverted) and gender are characteristics of people that are associated with many stereotypes (Heilman, 2001; Andersen & Klatzky, 1987), and can have a large influence on an employer’s perception of an applicant, particularly when the employer is acting as a cognitive miser. It is hypothesized that in longer interviews, employers will be motivated to not act as cognitive misers, because they have more information about the applicant, have more of an opportunity to disconfirm any biases they may hold about the applicant, and experience greater liking toward the applicant. To test this, participants will conduct interviews with job applicants (who are actually confederates) and rate their perceptions of the applicants’ expected job performance. Participants will either conduct a long or short interview with a male introvert, a female introvert, a male extravert, or a female extravert. Job applicants will provide participants with the same information, although the information about personality type and the amount of information given will depend on the condition. It is predicted that participants who conduct shorter interviews will rate the applicants in line with popular stereotypes that favor extraverts over introverts, and males over females. Conversely, participants in longer interviews will be motivated to thoroughly think through their evaluations of the applicants, and there will be no significant difference in their ratings of male extraverts, female extraverts, male introverts, and female introverts.

This thesis examines how three nineteenth-century British novels purvey and critique contemporary standards regarding social performance and reticence and the strains such standards place on those whose dispositions disincline them to conform to the regulations for decorum articulated in conduct books of the time. Utilizing the psychological lens of introversion and extroversion alongside the cognitive narrative theories of Alan Palmer and Lisa Zunshine, this thesis investigates the construction of individual character identities through the reading of interactions among multiple fictional minds in Charlotte Brontë’s Villette (1853), Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813), and George Eliot’s The Mill on the Floss (1860).

Darbe nagrinėjamos vartotojo asmenybės savybių (ektraversijos, intraversijos, emocinio labilumo ir emocinio stabilumo) bei prekinio ženklo „asmenybės“ savybių (nuoširdumas, jaudinimas, kompetencija, rafinuotumas ir stiprumas) rodiklių sąsajos, atsižvelgiant į 3 prekinio ženklo pateikimo modelius (simbolinis, materialus ir asociatyvus). Siekiant sumažinti šalutinių kintamųjų įtaką rezultatams, stimulu buvo pasirinktas neutralus (nei aukšto, nei žemo įsitraukimo), neegzistuojančio prekinio ženklo produktas – mineralinis vanduo. Tyrime dalyvavo 300 tiriamųjų (227 moterys ir 73 vyrai). Amžiaus ribos 18 – 36 metų (vidurkis 20,39). Nustatyta, jog prekinio ženklo „asmenybės“ simbolinio modelio pateikimo atveju savybių suvokimas nesiskiria ekstravertų ir intravertų grupėse, t.y. ekstravertai ir intravertai šias savybes suvokia vienodai. Materialaus modelio pateikimo atveju prekinio ženklo suvokimo skirtumų tarp ekstravertų ir intravertų taip pat nepastebėta. Tokia pati tendencija stebima ir asociatyvaus prekinio ženklo pateikimo modelio atveju. Nagrinėjant vartotojų neurotiškumą nustatyta, jog simbolinio prekinio ženklo pateikimo modelio atveju statistiškai reikšmingai skyrėsi prekinio ženklo jaudinimo, kompetencijos ir rafinuotumo savybių suvokimas, t.y. emociškai labilūs vartotojai šias savybes suvokė kaip labiau išreikštas lyginant su emociškai stabiliais. The present thesis focuses on the connection between the consumer personality traits (extroversion, introversion, emotional stability and emotional lability) and perception of brand personality traits (sincere, excitement, competence, sophistication and ruggedness, according to three brand presentation models (symbolic, material and associative). Stimulus was neutral (neither low, neither high involvement), unknown brand product – mineral water, with the purpose to reduce the effects of secondary variables. 300 respondents participated in the research. The distribution of respondents according to the gender was 227 women and 73 men, the boundaries of age were from 18 to 36 (20,39 on average). It has been determinated that there are no differences in the brand personality perception between extroverts and introverts when brand is presented in the symbolic model, i.e. the perception of brand personality is the same among extroverts and introverts. There were no differences in the perception of brand personality among extroverts and introverts when the brand was presented in material model. The same tendency was observed when brand was presented in associative model. Examining consumers’ neuroticism it was developed that emotional label consumers brand personality perceived as more exciting, competence and sophisticated in comparison with emotional stable consumers when brand was presented in the symbolic model. Satisfying communication is sometimes hard to come by. Due to differences in social expression and reception, individuals tend to express and receive communication in dissimilar ways, especially within different social contexts. In the present study, the effects of personality and channel of communication on individual and mutual satisfaction after a conversation will be tested. Participants will take a personality test to determine introversion or extraversion. They will then be randomly assigned to conversation pairs which will communicate either through an instant messaging (IM) program or face-to-face (FtF). Satisfaction will be determined using a modified version of the Interpersonal Communication Satisfaction Inventory (ICSI). It is hypothesized that individual satisfaction will be significantly higher for introverts in the IM condition and extraverts in the FtF condition. With regards to mutual satisfaction, it is hypothesized that pairs with dissimilar personalities in the FtF condition will be significantly lower than all other pairings. Finally, it is expected that individuals with high ratings of satisfaction will also report feeling as though they were able to express themselves more authentically. The results of this study will contribute to our view of interpersonal relationships in the modern digital age, as well as present possibilities for creating more mutually beneficial communication between differing personality types.

The purpose of this research is to examine the gender differences that exist when male and female participants complete the mirror-tracing task. This task was chosen because it requires both spatial and psychomotor abilities and is unusual in the sense that it has a far higher correlation with standard spatial ability measures than do most other psychomotor tests. This research will focus on looking at gender differences in speed, accuracy, and practice effects. It will also investigate two personality traits that correlate with performance on the task: introversion and anxiety. Data will be collected from three studies: Experiment 2 of Ackerman&Cianciolo's (1999) study, Experiment 3 of Ackerman&Cianciolo's (2000) study, and Experiment 1 of Field's (1998) study. The results are expected to show that males complete the mirror-tracing task quicker than females during initial, intermediate, and final assessments; however, females will exhibit greater practice effects than males. The results are also anticipated to show there is no significant gender difference in the number of errors made during initial, intermediate, or final assessment. Finally, the number of errors made during initial assessment on the mirror-tracing task is expected to be negatively correlated with introversion and positively correlated with anxiety.

Through a phenomenological qualitative approach, this study examined possible differences of introverted versus extraverted adult female survivors of childhood sexual abuse with regard to the coping mechanisms they chose. Preference modalities of introversion and extraversion were measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and data was collected through a semi-structured interview designed by the researcher. The interview contained questions about the 21 subjects' perceptions of their abuse and the ways in which they coped. Specific coping mechanisms included but were not limited to eating disorders, alcohol and/or drug abuse, high risk behavior, depression, anxiety, and somatic complaints. Results indicated that for both groups, the degree to which each of the individual coping mechanisms was used congregated at the level of "a driven pattern of behavior lasting for at least 7 days" or "on-going use resulting in severe problems". Extraverts showed higher percentages of severe use of the six coping mechanisms than did introverts. Depression was the most frequently used coping mechanism of both the introverts and the extraverts. Introverts showed higher percentages of stopping the use of eating disorders, alcohol/drug abuse, high risk behavior, and depression. Extraverts had higher percentages of discontinued use of anxiety and somatic problems. Introverts reported more somatic complaints, while extraverts reported more severe somatic problems. The most often reported somatic complaints of both groups were arthritis, migraines, sleep difficulty, nightmares, and gastrointestinal problems. The majority of each group used most of the coping mechanisms at some time, suggesting a need for therapeutic intervention that considers the possibility of difficulties stemming from combined use of many of these coping mechanisms in addition to focusing on the trauma of the sexual abuse itself.

My dissertation is focused on analysing the importance of personality typology during the choice of career. The theoretical part is aimed at the clarification of related key concepts, summary of knowledge concerning the personality typology and explanation of chosen theories dealing with personality typology. I paid particular attention to the type indicator MBTI, which is subsequently used in the practical part. The methodological part follows the theoretical part. The methodological part delimits the particular phases of the research and together with the theoretical part serves as a basis for the practical part. Within the practical part the personality typology issues used during the choice of career are analysed through the research and subsequently the interpretation of ascertained results is mentioned.

Memoria para optar al título de Diseñador Gráfico
Este proyecto explora la convergencia del pensamiento y las habilidades de diseño y la narrativa gráfica para dar forma a un libro álbum digital para adultos jóvenes usuarios de internet, sobre los introvertidos (sin discriminar si los lectores son introvertidos o no). La investigación de base para este proyecto fue desarrollada sobre un enfoque cualitativo basado en el paradigma fenomenológico constructivista. Las herramientas de investigación son el estudio de casos, la identificación y el análisis de patrones base en temas clave, y la recopilación de datos sobre bibliografía publicada y artículos web altamente relevantes sobre temas como la ilustración, la infografía y el formato narrativo del libro álbum. Se aplican principios del pensamiento de diseño no sólo al manejo cromático y de diagramación, sino la misma sensibilidad aplicada al diseño de personajes, el guión, las metáforas visuales y la dimensión semántico impresa en cada página. Todo esto, con el objetivo de reforzar su potencial comunicativo, llevar el mensaje al lector, conseguir su comprensión y alcanzar una respuesta emotiva que, estima la autora, asegurará la recordación de dicho mensaje. Éste es: cómo son los introvertidos, cómo lidiar con ellos (si el lector es extrovertido) y cómo sobrellevar mejor las relaciones interpersonales (si el lector es introvertido). Pero el punto no es ‘cambiar’, sino conseguir la aceptación propia y valorar las virtudes que tenemos gracias a nuestra naturaleza.
