O processo de adopção de novos produtos permanece um dos tópicos mais interessantes em estudos de comportamento do consumidor, particularmente no caso de inovações radicais. O propósito deste estudo prende-se com entender os factores que influenciam a decisão de fumadores adultos de adoptar ou não o iQOS, um sistema revolucionário que aquece o tabaco ao invés de o queimar e que permite uma experiência de consumo sem fumo com níveis de toxicidade significativamente menores que as alternativas actualmente disponíveis no mercado. A novidade do produto e os constrangimentos únicos (e.g., legislação imposta à indústria tabaqueira) que se colocam à actuação da marca-mãe, tornam a difusão desta inovação particularmente complexa. Para avaliar o impacto de potenciais influenciadores do processo de adopção do iQOS, realizaram- se entrevistas em profundidade para investigar as percepções de fumadores relativamente: (1) às características do produto/inovação, propostas por Rogers (1983) e (2) à percepção de potenciais riscos da inovação. O estudo adoptou uma abordagem interpretativista. Foi analisada a experiência de adopção de dois indivíduos utilizadores iQOS e conduzida uma experiência com seis participantes sem experiência prévia com o iQOS, envolvendo entrevistas pré e pós-teste. Os resultados sugerem que existe resistência à inovação, apesar de todos os praticantes reconhecerem o iQOS como a forma de consumir tabaco que menos impactos negativos tem na saúde do fumador. Desta forma, para aumentar a taxa de adopção entre fumadores, são apresentadas algumas sugestões.
The consumer adoption process continues to be one of the most intriguing areas of consumer behaviour, particularly regarding radical innovations. The purpose of this study is to understand adult smokers' motivators to adopt iQOS, a breakthrough tobacco heating system that is smoke free and allows a smoking experience with significantly reduced harmful chemicals than the existing alternatives. The newness of the product and its company's contingencies has turned this body of research even more complex, fuelling further investigation suggestions. In order to achieve results on potential causes for the iQOS' adoption process, in-depth-interviews were conducted, based on (1) Rogers' (1983) innovation characteristics and (2) consumer perceived risks. An interpretative approach granted a deeper knowledge on the subject, comparing experiences between iQOS users and iQOS testers with qualitative content analysis. The results suggest iQOS is still facing resistance to innovation, despite participants recognizing less potentially negative health effects on iQOS than the alternatives. Some potential risk-relievers are presented in order to increase adoption rates among adult smokers.

Topicality of the problem. GSM mobile networks are very widely used in the world and the number of GSM users exceeds 10^9. In the last decade, the GSM/GPRS network has been very rapidly expanded in Lithuania as well. Coverage of the network has reached 99 % of territory of the country. Load of the network in largest cities reaches up to several hundred Erlangs for square kilometre. Voice traffic still generates the largest part of the network load, however mobile data traffic also grows rapidly. Radio interface between the user of mobile services and the network is not stationary. The received QoS of every user in different places is different. Even in a single cell, radio link characteristics differ in different parts of the cell. The signal level may easily vary about 10–20 dB just within several or tens of meters. Moreover, a mobile user experiences different link conditions while moving in the natural environment within or between cells. However, historically characteristics of QoS of mobile services are measured and evaluated like the ones of the fixed network using statistical methods. Statistically calculated characteristics of QoS do not include information about the received quality of mobile telecommunication services of every individual user. Conception of the received quality of services of individual users (individual QoS – iQoS) in the GSM/GPRS network has not been analysed in the world before. Denna studie baseras på den sociala semiotiken och idéen om att kunskap om sociala sammanhang och lämpliga sociala beteenden kan förstås som sociala genrer. Förmedlandet av den kunskapen ges genom olika texter där sociala situationer, individer och beteenden representeras. Syftet med denna studie är därför att undersöka vilka sociala situationer och beteenden som gestaltas i Systembolaget och Iq:s filmer. Studien ämnar därmed att undersöka vilka outtalade diskurser och myter som bolagen förmedlar. Det valda materialet i studien baseras delvis på bolagets unika roll i och med Sveriges alkoholmonopol, men också av anledning att studien ämnar undersöka betydelsen av filmernas avsändare. 30 filmer från bolagen har analyserat i en socialsemiotisk analys. De slutsatser som studien ledde fram till var att bolagen har en paradoxal roll i sin alkoholkommunikation. Systembolaget gestaltas som ett gott, gemensamt, samhälleligt görande mot målet om ett sundare alkoholklimat i Sverige. Samtidigt ges butikernas utbud och vilja att tillfredsställa konsumenten en lika central roll. Bolagen söker att förändra ett beteende men är samtidigt underkastade den rådande alkoholdiskursen, vilket syns i de situationer, individer och beteenden som gestaltas. Alkohol eller berusning är närvarande i alla filmer medan avspeglandet av det önskade beteendet däremot är frånvarande. Bolagens roll som avsändare av filmerna är diskret och reflekterar ytterligare bolagens mål om att insikten ska nås på individnivå heller än utifrån en uppmaning. L’emprenedoria o entrepreneurship és una disciplina científica dedicada a l’estudi metodològic dels emprenedors, la funció empresarial i la creació d’empreses. El creixement d’aquest tipus d’estudis en els darrers anys es deu a la transcendència que suposa la creació d’empreses per al desenvolupament tecnològic i econòmic d’un territori. Les teories sobre l’emprenedoria han estat àmpliament recollides per la literatura acadèmica des dels seus inicis. Aquestes teories inclouen una àmplia diversitat de definicions i de criteris per a l’estudi del fenomen emprenedor. Per tant, un primer estudi d’aquesta bibliografia resulta imprescindible per a la focalització del present treball. L’objectiu d’aquest projecte és l’avaluació de l’emprenedoria dels graduats IQS. Es tracta d’una anàlisi sobre la contribució IQS a la creació d’empreses per part dels seus graduats. IQS és un centre universitari amb més de cent anys d’història, ubicat a Barcelona i dirigit per la Companyia de Jesús. Forma part de la Universitat Ramon Llull, impartint actualment estudis de tipus científic-tecnològic i econòmic-empresarial. La formació dels seus graduats, més enllà dels coneixements ensenyats i apresos, inclou també l’adquisició de capacitats, habilitats i sobretot, valors. En el seu conjunt conformen el caràcter i la personalitat dels seus graduats i constitueixen una base crítica davant de qualsevol presa de decisió en front a la possibilitat de dur a terme una iniciativa emprenedora. La identificació del màxim nombre d’emprenedors graduats IQS i de les empreses creades per part seva és un dels reptes a assolir en aquest projecte. Tot i així, el que constitueix el cos més important del treball, és l’estudi descriptiu d’una mostra dels casos més recents, amb la finalitat d’obtenir conclusions sobre les motivacions dels emprenedors, les característiques de les empreses creades i la contribució d’IQS. La metodologia utilitzada es basa en l’anàlisi de les dades obtingudes a partir d’un qüestionari a contestar per una mostra dels emprenedors IQS identificats. El model es basa en un estudi similar elaborat pel MIT per avaluar l’impacte emprenedor dels seus graduats. L’avaluació dels resultats permet concloure que el nombre d’emprenedors IQS pot considerar-se important i que les empreses que han creat compten amb algunes de les característiques pròpies de les del seu entorn territorial mentre que també responen a qualitats que es deriven de l’actuació d’IQS.

El crecimiento de este tipo de estudios en los últimos años se debe a la trascendencia que supone la creación de empresas para el desarrollo tecnológico y económico de un territorio. Las teorías sobre el emprendimiento han sido ampliamente recogidas por la literatura académica desde sus inicios. Dichas teorías incluyen una amplia diversidad de definiciones y de criterios para el estudio del fenómeno emprendedor. Por ello, un primer estudio de esta bibliografía resulta imprescindible para la focalización del presente trabajo. El objetivo de este proyecto es la evaluación del emprendimiento de los graduados IQS. Se trata de un análisis sobre la contribución de IQS a la creación de empresas por parte de sus graduados. IQS es un centro universitario con más de cien años de historia ubicado en Barcelona y dirigido por la Compañía de Jesús. Forma parte de la Universitat Ramon Llull impartiendo actualmente estudios de tipo científico-tecnológico y económico-empresarial. La formación de sus graduados, más allá de los conocimientos enseñados y aprendidos, incluye también la adquisición de capacidades, habilidades y sobretodo valores. En su conjunto conforman el carácter y la personalidad de sus graduados y constituyen una base crítica ante cualquier toma de decisión frente a la posibilidad de llevar a cabo una iniciativa emprendedora. La identificación del máximo número de emprendedores graduados IQS y de las empresas creadas por su parte es uno de los retos a conseguir en este proyecto. Sin embargo, lo que constituye el cuerpo más importante del trabajo, es el estudio descriptivo de una muestra de los casos más recientes, con el fin de obtener conclusiones sobre las motivaciones de los emprendedores, las características de las empresas creadas y la contribución de IQS. La metodología utilizada se basa en el análisis de los datos obtenidos a partir de un cuestionario a contestar por una muestra de los emprendedores IQS identificados. El modelo se basa en un estudio similar elaborado por el MIT para evaluar el impacto emprendedor de sus graduados. La evaluación de los resultados permite concluir que el número de emprendedores IQS puede considerarse importante y que las empresas que han creado cuentan con algunas de las características propias de las de su entorno territorial mientras que también responden a cualidades que se derivan de la actuación de IQS.
Entrepreneurship is a scientific discipline addressed to the methodological study of entrepreneurs, business function and business creation. In recent years, the growing of this kind of studies is due to its importance which involves the creation of new companies for the technological and economic development of a territory. Since its beginnings, theories of entrepreneurship have been widely collected by the academic literature. Such theories include a wide variety of definitions and criteria for the study of the entrepreneurial phenomenon. Therefore, a first study of this literature is essential for targeting this work. The purpose of this project is the evaluation of the entrepreneurial activity of IQS’s graduates based on its achievements. This is also connected to the contribution of the IQS to business creation by means its graduates. IQS is an academic center with more than one hundred years of history, located in Barcelona and conducted by the Society of Jesus. IQS is part of the Universitat Ramon Llull and its studies include science and technology and also economics and business administration. The education of its graduates, beyond the knowledge taught and learned, also includes the acquisition of skills, abilities and values. Taken together, they make up the character and the personality of its graduates. This education provide to its students with a critical basis for any decision-making regarding the possibility of carrying out entrepreneurship. The identification of the maximum number of IQS entrepreneurs and the companies created by them is one of the challenges to achieve in this project. However, what is the most important body of this research is the descriptive study of a group of recent cases, in order to draw conclusions about the motivations of entrepreneurs, the characteristics of the companies created and the contribution of IQS. The methodology is based on the analysis of the data obtained from a questionnaire answered by a sample of IQS entrepreneurs. The model is based on a similar study prepared by MIT to assess the entrepreneurial impact of its graduates. The evaluation of the results leads to the conclusion that the number of IQS entrepreneurs can be considered relevant and also that their companies have some of the characteristics of their local environment while also respond to qualities that are derived from the performance of IQS.

After the 1994 elections education reform has been characterized by the introduction of laws and policies, including IQMS, that seek to reconcile post‐apartheid traditions to practices that would address deficiencies borne by the era in the education field. The IQMS is a clear reaction to the autocratic mode of evaluation that operated during the apartheid era and is a major shift from the old paradigm of external evaluators. It was designed to review performance and identify strengths and weaknesses, encouraging personal and professional development, drawing on peer and collegial feedback rather than official Department of Education surveillance. However, recent studies have shown that the IQMS has failed and is failing to achieve what it was intended to achieve. This study examines the reasons for this failure in a secondary school in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This research is an interpretive case study that uses observation, document analysis and interviews utilising theories of learning organizations, management and leadership. The study reveals that the policy is not applied in the way it was intended and is failing in this regard. The policy process has been bureaucratised and suffers from superficial compliance. The developmental thrust of the policy seems to have been lost. It was also discovered that the involvement of teacher unions has both positively and negatively affected the implementation process and that the support schools receive from the department is not enough to keep the policy alive in schools. This research is likely to benefit school principals, policy makers and implementers, and IQMS coordinators, as it provides clarity on the issues restraining IQMS implementation in schools. The study also demonstrates the need for school principals to consider adopting transformational leadership as a strategy to lead teachers against political influence and expose them to professional development opportunities.

The purpose of this study was to explore in-depth, the role of Integrated Quality Management System coordinators and the role of subject advisors in the professional development of educators in the Tshwane South district and Northern Gauteng district of the Gauteng Department of Education. This qualitative research study used a case study design - the case being the role of two sets of district officials in educator professional development. This study was framed by the four main roles of the district officials as stipulated by the Personnel Administration Measures (1996), namely planning, support, supervision and educator engagement. These four main concepts were not just a point of reference but the conceptual framework underpinning the study. Altogether, eight district officials took part in this study. Semi-structured interviews were employed as data collection strategy in this study. The findings of this study were that the role of officials in planning EPD is varied and often overlaps, that support is mainly provide through school visits, but other means of support are also employed when required, that supervision and oversight is not always developmental in nature, and finally that educator engagement is often insufficient and does not always engage educators in the processes and planning of EPD. The study put forward recommendations that advance planning, advocacy and training for the implementation of IQMS be done, that professional development activities endorsed by SACE be adopted throughout the system, that a change of focus from monitoring and accountability methods in educator professional development to developmental supervision be adopted, and consultation and engagement with educators in designing and planning professional development activities be prioritised.

The purpose of this research study was to explore how district officials monitor and provide support to teachers through the effective implementation of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) in South African public schools. Through the utilization of a qualitative case study approach, and guided by a theoretical framework of “performative society”, the study attempted to provide a glimpse of how district officials carry out their responsibilities. Among others, by monitoring and providing necessary support to teachers in order to address various developmental needs as identified during the IQMS implementation cycles at institutional level. Data collection was a mix of semi-structured interviews, observations, field notes and a researcher journal. The major findings emanating from this study were six fold: First, district officials were very conversant with the policy imperatives of the ELRC Resolution 8 of 2003 that deals with the implementation of IQMS in public schools. Second, the study revealed a sense of despair and hopelessness on the side of educators because of evident absence of district officials’ provision of support, particularly during the IQMS cyclic implementation process. Third, while school based educators understood the principles, purposes and procedures of IQMS fully well, they were still struggling to translate theory into practice. Fourth, lack of proper planning in schools hindered the effective implementation of IQMS. Fifth, lack of special incentives for the SDTs. And sixth, is lack of resources in some public schools, as well as the attitude of teachers and school managers towards the implementation of IQMS in schools. These factors, the study revealed, were cited as reasons impeding the effective implementation of IQMS in public schools. Copyright

A dinâmica ambiental possui capacidade limitada de reciclagem e a crescente utilização resíduos agroindustriais, especialmente na agricultura, pode levar a situações de poluição do solo e demais componentes ambientais. A manutenção da produtividade de ecossistemas agrícolas e naturais depende do processo de transformação da matéria orgânica e, por conseguinte, da biomassa microbiana do solo, e que é responsável pela decomposição e mineralização de resíduos no mesmo. A dinâmica natural dos microrganismos do solo, em constante mudança e adaptação, os torna um indicador sensível às mudanças resultantes de diferentes práticas de manejo agrícola. Sendo assim, conhecer essas alterações e suas interferências é fundamental para identificar estratégias adequadas de manejo, apontando técnicas de utilização adequadas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade de um solo agrícola, cultivado com três variedades de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.), comparando a utilização de adubação mineral frente à utilização de fertilizante orgânico composto no período final de formação dos perfilhos (120 dias após o plantio). Foi implantado, em condições de campo, o cultivo de cana-de-açúcar (cana planta), utilizando as variedades RB 867515, RB 962869 e RB 855453, onde cada variedade foi cultivada de três formas distintas, sendo elas: plantio controle (CT) sem aplicação de insumos para adubação; plantio orgânico (OG) com aplicação de fertilizante orgânico; e plantio convencional (CV) com aplicação de adubação mineral, seguindo recomendações de adubação após análise química inicial do solo local. Cada parcela possuía 37 m2, com 5 sulcos de 5,0 m de comprimento e espaçamento de 1,5 m entrelinhas, sendo os três sulcos centrais formando a área útil. De acordo com a variedade e o tipo de adubação, foram formados nove tratamentos: T1 86CT, T2 96CT, T3 85CT, T4 6OG, T5 96OG, T6 85OG, T7 86CV, T8 96CV e T9 85CV, com delineamento estatístico de blocos ao acaso e quatro repetições. Os parâmetros químicos do solo analisados foram macronutrientes e micronutrientes; os parâmetros microbiológicos foram carbono da biomassa microbiana (CBM), respiração basal do solo (RBS), quociente metabólico (qCO2), número mais provável de fungos e bactérias do solo (NMP); e, por fim, a produtividade agrícola (t/ha). Os resultados foram submetidos a análise de variância (ANOVA) e à comparação das médias através do teste de Tukey (10%). Também foi realizada a análise de variância dos dados e correlação cofenética de Pearson para formação de dendogramas. Com base no período estudado, considerado como fase crítica da formação do canavial, concluiu-se que os parâmetros químicos que evidenciaram alterações no solo foram pH e os macronutrientes Mg, Al e SB, sendo os tratamentos orgânicos equivalentes e/ou melhores que os tratamentos convencionais. Para os parâmetros microbiológicos, o NMP de fungos apresentou os maiores valores nos tratamentos convencionais e controle. A produtividade agrícola não foi influenciada pelos diferentes tratamentos e insumos utilizados, independente da variedade de cana-de-açúcar utilizada. Por fim, foram observadas correlações positivas entre as variáveis CTC e quociente metabólico (qCO2) apontando potencial melhoria da qualidade do solo, com o emprego de insumos orgânicos
The environmental dynamics has limited recycling capacity and increasing use of agroindustrial waste, especially in agriculture, can lead to soil pollution situations and other environmental components. The maintenance of the productivity of agricultural and natural ecosystems is dependent on the transformation process of organic matter and therefore, the microbial biomass, which is responsible for the decomposition and mineralization of waste therein. The natural dynamics of soil microorganisms, constantly changing and adapting, makes them a sensitive indicator of changes resulting from different agricultural practices. So, knowing these changes and their interference is critical to identify appropriate management strategies, pointing appropriate use of techniques. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of an agricultural soil cultivated with three varieties of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.), comparing the use of mineral front fertilizer use of organic compound fertilizer at the end of training period of tillers (120 days after planting). Was deployed in field conditions, the sugarcane crop (plant cane), using the varieties RB 867515, RB 962 869 and RB 855 453, where each variety was grown in three different ways, namely: planting control (CT) without application of inputs for fertilizer; organic planting (OG) with organic fertilizer application; and conventional tillage (CV) with application of mineral fertilizer, following fertilizer recommendations after initial chemical analysis of the local soil. Each plot had 37 m2, with 5 grooves of 5.0 m long and 1.5 m spacing between lines, with the three central grooves forming the floor area. According to the variety and type of fertilization, they were formed nine treatments: T1 86CT, T2 96CT, T3 85CT, T4 6OG, T5 96OG, 85OG T6, T7 86CV, T8 96CV and T9 85CV, with statistical design of randomized blocks and four replications. Chemical parameters analyzed were macronutrients and micronutrients; microbiological parameters were microbial biomass carbon (MBC), the basal soil respiration (RBS), metabolic quotient (qCO2), most likely number of fungi and soil bacteria (NMP); and, finally, agricultural productivity (t/ha). The results were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and comparison of means by Tukey test (10%). It was also performed the analysis of variance of data and cophenetic Pearson correlation to dendograms training. Based on the study period, considered critical stage of the formation of sugarcane, it was concluded that chemical parameters showed changes in soil were pH and macronutrients Mg, Al and SB being equivalent organic treatments and/or better than those treatments conventional. For microbiological parameters, NMP fungi showed the highest values in conventional and control treatments. Agricultural productivity was not affected by the different treatments and inputs used, regardless of the variety of sugarcane used. Finally, positive correlations were observed between the CTC variables and metabolic quotient (qCO2) indicating potential improvement of soil quality, with the use of organic inputs

Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Education in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education of the Faculty of Education at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2013.
Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) is an appraisal system of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education. The appraisal system intended to develop educators on an on-going basis. The primary aim of this investigation was to establish the effect that IQMS has on educator efficacy. As an introduction to the study, the requirements for educator efficacy were reviewed. In so doing, the various characteristics for effective teaching-learning situation and of an “ideal” educator were highlighted. The didactical behaviour of successful educators was also in focus. The requirements for educator efficacy and the effects of IQMS on educator efficacy were investigated using a literature and empirical study. The study revealed that IQMS has a positive effect on educator performances. For the purposes of the empirical investigation, a structured questionnaire was used. Four hundred and six (406) questionnaires were completed by educators from the primary and secondary schools from the Pinetown District in the Ethekwini Region of KZN and these questionnaires were analysed. The data was processed and interpreted using descriptive and inferential statistics.

O Brasil devido a sua recente abertura ao mercado externo, necessita urgentemente da difusão de conceitos e técnicas que ajudem a indústria nacional na melhoria de sua qualidade e produtividade. Este trabalho testa um novo conceito de controle de qualidade/processo, o Sistema Integrado de Qualidade (IQS), apresentando as ferramentas necessárias a sua implantação e utilização. O IQS é um sistema abrangente, que permite o estabelecimento de um planejamento de médio e longo prazo para melhoria da qualidade e produtividade, em conjunto com o controle, a curto prazo, de todos os processos menores da empresa. O conceito de sistema integrado de qualidade é delineado bem como suas estruturas básicas, os modelos de estágio simples e as janelas de controle de qualidade, são descritas. Essas estruturas são utilizadas no controle de um processo de prensagem de pisos cerâmicos.

The main purpose of this research was to evaluate the processes for IQMS implementation in the selected Eastern Cape schools so as to determine the model that can be postulated for improving the IQMS implementation in the South African schools. While mainly deriving from the fact that so far, empirical research reveals that the process for IQMS implementation has been marred with a significant number of challenges. The study star begins with the formulation of a thought-process in its overriding hypothesis. The hypothesis is that the application of a five constructs’ IQMS Implementation Model in Figure 1.1 would signficantly influence the successful IQMS implementation in South African schools. The five constructs that are outlined in the IQMS Implementation Model in Figure 1.1 include: (1) Considering the Notion of “Quality” and Whole School Evaluation, (2) Performance Management and Developmental Appraisals, (3) Considering Key Success Factors for IQMS Implementation, (4) the Use of Appropriate Implementation Processes, Systems and Methods, and (5) Constant Monitoring, and Evaluations and Applications of the Improvement Actions. Despite the fact that the integrated quality management theories strongly support this hypothesis, the study, in line with these five constructs which were also aligned with the five research questions and hypotheses that guided this research applies exploratory factor analysis. This has been done in order to further define the structure of the IQMS Implementation Model in Figure 1.1 prior to applying confirmatory factor analysis in order to determine whether the IQMS Implementation Model in Figure 1.1 would perfectly reproduce the 53 observed sample data which was used in the study. The results confirmed the overriding hypothesis in the IQMS Implementation Model in Figure 1.1 which is that effectiveness of the IQMS implementation processes in the South African schools can be significantly influenced by the application of the five constructs. These include: Considering the Notion of “Quality” and Whole School Evaluation, Performance Management and Developmental Appraisals, Considering Key Success Factors for IQMS Implementation, the Use of the Appropriate Implementation Processes, Systems and Methods, and Undertaking Constant Monitoring, Evaluations and Improvement Action. In effect, it was recommended that the Eastern Cape Department of Education must adopt the IQMS implementation Model in Figure 1.1 in order to effectively implement its integrated quality management systems. Despite examining the limitations of the study, the recommendations chapter also discussed the area for further research in which it was suggested that the area for further research would be: Evaluating the impact of appropriate standards’ setting on the successful IQMS implementation in the schools in the Eastern Cape schools.

The researcher’s interest in this study is in teachers’ perceptions and principals of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS). This study examines teachers’ understandings of this quality management and performance appraisal system, how teachers perceive the instrument used to manage and monitor their performance and the performance of their schools, and what lessons may be learnt regarding the implementation process of the IQMS. The investigation was carried out in three Butterworth District schools in the Eastern Cape. The researcher made use of qualitative methodology to obtain data from a sample of 3 principals, 9 teachers and 1 district official. Data were collected from these respondents by means of in-depth, semi-structured interviews and through document analysis. The study found that some of the teachers and principals felt that they did not understand the IQMS, and they complained that the system is fraught with many obstacles that need to be addressed in order to promote the effectiveness of teaching and learning. The participants also spoke of multiple factors that contribute negatively to this phenomenon, which include the fact that the teachers’ workload is increased by the IQMS, time constraints, inadequate training, vague and unfamiliar language, the financial incentive that is attached to the instrument, and the many structures in the implementation process. In addition, the system seems to encourage a bureaucratic style of management. Teachers and principals also suggested ways in which the IQMS could be structured by the Department of Education for greater efficiency in education.

This paper deals with underground water diagnosis of the urban area from João Pessoa, state capital of Paraíba, Brazil, whose aim is evaluate its natural features, over time, considering as one of its main uses its intended, the human provision. For this, it was monitored 13 deep wells (on average 200m) on Beberibe aquifer and spread in urban area from João Pessoa. Such wells belong to water and sewage Company in the state of Paraíba – CAGEPA and present a reliable lithologic profile. It was used the Quality of Water Index from Bascarán – IQAB to evaluate the analytical results. The results demonstrated that during the study period, the water from monitored wells stand, in general, was classified as agreeable on the scale water quality of IQAB. It was found on the physical, chemical and bacteriological individual analysis, ammonia and nitrate levels off limits established by ordinance 518/04 from Health Ministry – Ministério da Saúde/MS. This way, the water classification as agreeable is justified according to IQAB scale. This reality shows the necessity and importance of a major supervision on the ground water on João Pessoa urban area by management agencies to avoid its contamination and, consequently, invalidating the use of this water for human consumption.
Este trabalho trata do diagnóstico da água subterrânea do perímetro urbano da cidade de João Pessoa, a capital do Estado da Paraíba, objetivando avaliar suas características naturais, ao longo do tempo, considerando o abastecimento humano como um dos principais usos a que se destina. Para tanto, foram monitorados 13 poços profundos (média de 200m), no aqüífero Beberibe e distribuídos no perímetro urbano de João Pessoa. Tais poços são de propriedade da Companhia de Água e Esgoto do Estado da Paraíba – CAGEPA e apresentam perfil litológico confiável. Para o tratamento dos resultados analíticos utilizou-se como ferramenta o Índice de Qualidade de Água de Bascarán – IQAB. Verificou-se que, no período do estudo, a água dos poços monitorados permaneceu, em geral, como agradável na escala de qualidade da água do IQAB. Na análise individual dos parâmetros físico, químico e bacteriológico constataram-se valores de amônia e nitrito fora dos limites estabelecidos pela portaria 518/04 do Ministério da Saúde – MS, o que justifica a classificação agradável, da água na escala do IQAB. Essa realidade mostra a necessidade e importância de uma maior fiscalização, por parte dos órgãos gestores, do lençol subterrâneo no perímetro urbano de João Pessoa sob pena de ocorrer sua contaminação acarretando, conseqüentemente, na inviabilização do uso da água para o consumo humano.

This study investigated the experiences of the Development Support Group (DGS) when implementing the IQMS (Integrated Quality Management System) in Butterworth District of the Eastern Cape. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of the DSG when implementing the IQMS in an attempt to determine whether the DSG can cope with the task of being part of evaluation in education, and how the negative experiences could be improved. In order to get the experiences of the DSG when implementing the IQMS, the researcher embarked on this phenomenological study. Data were collected by means of one-on-one semi-structured interviews and the perusal of the IQMS document, Resolution 8 of 2003. Responses from the participants were tape-recorded and eventually transcribed, analyzed and interpreted. The main feature revealed by the study is gross lack of confidence, feeling of insecurity and ambivalence on the part of the DSG. On the basis of the findings, recommendations that will assist the DSG (and other IQMS implementers) to improve IQMS implementation, have been made. This study also serves as the voice of the DSG for they have also made suggestions to improve on the negative experiences they have highlighted. The conclusions arrived at in this study are specific to the DSG of the sampled schools. The conclusions reflect and explain the challenges faced by the DSG in Butterworth district. But the findings give a reflective explanatory depth to the experiences the DSG when implementing the IQMS.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) is implemented in schools in the Libode education district. The study focused on the existence of IQMS documents as evidence or proof that IQMS is being implemented. In addition, the study looked at the existence and functionality of structures and processes for the implementation of IQMS in the selected schools. Lastly, the study focused on the deliverables and outcomes arising out of the implementation of IQMS in schools. The pragmatic paradigm and the case study design were used to frame and focus the research. Data was obtained from sixty (60) educators who were surveyed, principals of the three (3) selected schools, and three (3) Education District Officials (EDOs) selected on purpose for interviews. Data thus obtained was analysed both quantitatively using descriptive statistics, and qualitatively through extraction of themes. The study draws conclusions on findings based on the attendance of IQMS workshops meant to capacitate teachers on the conceptualisation and practice of IQMS; the availability and quality of IQMS workshops; understanding of IQMS processes by teachers and the officials; IQMS evaluation processes underwent by teachers; alignment between School Improvement Plans and the District Improvement Plan, and the connection between individual growth and school improvement; the constitution and functioning of IQMS structures; and the form and content of IQMS deliverables and outcomes. This research makes recommendations for IQMS implementation and further research.

The study sought to investigate problems encountered by educators in the implementation of IQMS in selected schools in the Butterworth Education District. The study emerged out of an agreement reached by the Department of Education, Education Labour Relation Council, unions and stakeholders (ELRC, 2003) that Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) be a developmental programme for quality performance in teaching and learning in public schools. The programme was based on the merging of three programmes, namely the Developmental Appraisal System (DAS), Performance Management System (PMS) and Whole School Evaluation (WSE) which were integrated in the implementation of IQMS (Resolution No.8 of 2003).The first three programmes, DAS, PMS and WSE, were less effective and had some flaws that caused implementers (educators) not to accept them as performance developmental programmes as they were punitive and judgmental. The researcher was interested in investigating those problems encountered by the educators in the implementation of IQMS. The study employed a qualitative research methodology with a qualitative survey design. Structured interviews were used to collect data. Five (5) schools out of three hundred and twenty five schools (325) in the Butterworth Education District were conveniently selected. From each school a sample of five (5) educators was purposively selected according to their duty lines on the IQMS structures, i.e. principal, school coordinator and three educators, for the purpose of getting relevant information from each level. Some of the main findings of the study were: the duration of the training was too short; unclear roles and responsibilities of role-players resulted in non-implementation of the programme; attachment of incentive to the programme made educators to focus on the incentives rather than on the programme and the heavy workload of educators hindered the implementation of IQMS. The researcher recommended that administrators/clerks be employed as a matter of urgency to all schools in order to lessen the educators’ workload especially the principals, for the benefit of accomplishing the objectives of IQMS programmes. Re-training was absolutely a necessity. Delinking of incentives to the development programme was a crucial issue. The researcher also recommended that the IQMS Departmental Officials should monitor the implementation of the programme timeuosly so as to tackle the problems in their premature stages. The improvement of working conditions in schools is essential. Key words: quality performance; quality management; quality performance measurement and quality implementation of IQMS programme.

The purpose of this study was to investigate educator perceptions of the implementation of Integrated Quality Management Systems (IQMS) in Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges in South Africa. Quality in education is presently put more firmly on the agenda not withstanding the fact that a vast range of literature is available to support the process of improving the quality in education. The department of education has made many attempts to introduce an effective appraisal system in support of quality education only to find that the previous appraisal systems were rejected by the educator force for the mere fact that it was perceived as a form of inspection and supervision rather than for development purposes. This study also focuses on a review of the integrated quality management system (IQMS), of its purpose, guidelines and its subsequent implementation in FET colleges in South Africa in 2004. The primary focus of the discussion is on the processes, the methods, the guiding principles and the pitfalls of the implementation of quality management systems in educational organizations To guide this discussion literature reviews on quality, quality education, quality management and quality management systems were undertaken. The empirical study entailed gleaning information from a structured questionnaire which was distributed to a sample group of lecturers at Sedibeng College for FET in the Gauteng Province. The questions were structured in a manner to gain information about the understanding of the operational principles of quality management, the aims and guiding principles of IQMS, the importance of quality control and the external relationships of the college. The major finding emanating from this study was that there was a need for intensive training in IQMS, thus a management's strategy for ensuring that IQMS is effectively implemented was proposed. The overall recommendation arising from this study includes ensuring that management designs a quality manual to guide the process of quality assurance.

This study investigated how educators experience the peer observation component of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS), a quality and performance management system that was introduced into South African schools in 2005. The extent to which the Integrated Quality Management System has contributed to the development of schools in their entirety has been largely unchartered. The objective of this dissertation was to investigate the perceived experiences of educators concerning the peer observation component of the Integrated Quality Management System. A qualitative research paradigm was employed in order to gather data for this study. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with educators; data collected from the interviews was compared and integrated with data collected from the documentsthat were studied. The data gathered was analyzed using the theory of collegiality in order to explore how educators experience peer observation as a component of the IQMS during its implementationas well as what impact it had on collegiality The findings revealed that teachers are given an opportunity to select their peers during peer observation implementation which, however, leads to an inconsistent and subjective allocation and rating of scores in order to get a 1% pay progression. The study found that the peer observation part of the IQMS is an effective tool for teachers‟ development as it helps them identify areas that need to be developed in order to improve on their teaching practice. The study‟s findings also revealed that if favourable conditions for peer observation are created, peer observation enhances collegiality among teachers.

The purpose of this paper, based on a doctoral study, is to examine how teachers in the Foundation Phase of schools in the Free State province perceived, conceptualised and implemented Developmental Appraisal System (DAS) as a component of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS). The epistemological and ontological perspectives pertaining to both quantitative and qualitative approaches compelled the researcher to choose the Mixed Method Research (MMR). Data analysis consisted of the inferential and descriptive statistics for quantitative data analysis and, themes, patterns and behaviours for qualitative data analysis. Unbalanced two-way ANOVA, T-test and frequency distributions were used in analysis of quantitative data while themes and patterns resembled qualitative data analysis. The majority of teachers perceived DAS as a developmental process while a sizable minority claimed to the contrary. The Department of Basic Education did not provide direct training to teachers on matters pertaining to both the DAS and IQMS. Furthermore, the money reward earned through the process of DAS was perceived to be a source of conflict between teachers and school management.

Objetivo: o objetivo do presente estudo foi traduzir e validar para a Língua Portuguesa o instrumento de avaliação da qualidade de vida específico para mulheres com incontinência urinária - IQOL (Incontinence-Specific Quality-of-Life Instrument) amplamente usado em pesquisas no mundo inteiro. Pacientes e Métodos: Cinquenta pacientes completaram o mesmo questionário duas vezes, com duas semanas de intervalo. Durante a primeira visita, realizou- se uma entrevista, onde foram coletados dados demográficos. O questionário King´s Health Questionnaire (KHQ), já traduzido e validado para a Língua Portuguesa, também foi preenchido no mesmo momento para posterior comparação. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que a versão para o português do IQOL apresentou propriedades psicométricas dentro do que é preconizado para um instrumento de avaliação de qualidade de vida. A consistência interna, avaliada pela variável Alfa de Cronbach, foi 0,93 e a reprodutibilidade calculada pelo coeficiente de correlação Intraclasse foi 0,88. A validade do constructo foi determinada pela comparação dos escores do IQOL e KHQ e a validade discriminante foi calculada comparando os escores do IQOL com as medidas de gravidade. Conclusão: a versão para o Português do IQOL é um excelente instrumento para a avaliação da qualidade de vida em mulheres brasileiras com incontinência urinária.
The aim of this study was to translate and validate a Portuguese version of the Urinary Incontinence-Specific Quality-of- Life Instrument (I-QOL), a questionnaire that is widely used in clinical trials. Fifty patients completed the same questionnaire twice at a 2-week interval. During the first visit, we conducted a face-to-face interview, and collected demographic data. The King´s Health questionnaire was completed during the same visit for comparisons. The results showed that the Portuguese version of the I-QOL has very good psychometrics properties. Reliability was assessed by Cronbach´s alpha (0.93), reproducibility was calculated through the intraclass correlation coefficient (0.88), construct validity was determined by comparing the I-QOL scores and King´s Health scores, and discriminant validity was calculated by comparing the total I-QOL scores with measures of gravity. We conclude that the Portuguese version of the I-QOL is a very good tool for the evaluation quality-of-life in women with urinary incontinence, in Portuguese speaking countries.

The Department of Basic Education introduced the Integrated Quality Management system in 2003. This was an integration of the three systems, Developmental Appraisal System, Whole School Evaluation System and Performance Measurement System. The system was seen as to be the one that would allow teachers to play a vital role in assessing their own progress, and would integrate this with the necessary evaluation strategy for the professional development of teachers and monitoring of the quality of teaching and learning in schools. The purpose of this study was to research an evaluation of the Integrated Quality Management System impact in schools of the Mdantsane Area. The objective of the study was to establish whether the IQMS has addressed the concerns and needs of the educators and also establish their views on IQMS. The literature was reviewed to get more information on the key concepts of the IQMS and get to understand how the system should be implemented. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods have been used to get to probe the views of the educators and how the system impacts in schools. The data collected was analyzed by means of frequency tables and charts using statistical methods. It was concluded that educators still do not understand the policy document of IQMS and more training on the implementation of IQMS was recommended. The support and monitoring from the District Office needs to be strengthened.

This dissertation presents a study of the idea of Divine presence as represented in two of the Dead Sea Scrolls, IQS and IQH. It will attempt to demonstrate that it is a particular and distinctive idea of that presence that provides the Yahad's identity. To show how this might be so, the thesis will examine words and phrases used in IQS/H to describe God's presence in comparison with those same words and phrases in the Hebrew Bible. At times, it will be necessary to adduce collaborating evidence, drawn from other Qumran documents (IQSa, IQM), the LXX, the Vulgate, and Rabbinic literature. The thesis will note how scholarly literature on the Qumran documents studied here display a comparative neglect of the fundamental theme of Divine presence. After setting out the problem, the aim, and the method of this thesis in the introduction, I outline in what way the question of Divine presence influences our understanding of the identity of the Qumran Community by reviewing scholarly literature on this question. The study falls into four parts. In the first part, I analyse how IQS and IQH describe the nature and dwelling place of God. This part forms the basis for the following investigations. In the second part, I ask the question whether or not IQS and IQH describe a way in which the Yahad can experience God. In the third part, I investigate the relationship between God and the Qumran Community as described by IQS/H in two ways. First, I analyse how IQS/H picture God as the one who approaches the Commimity; secondly, I identify the means by which God approaches the Yahad as the principles on which the special relationship between the Community and God - a unique understanding of Divine presence - rests. In the fourth part of this thesis, I investigate how IQS/H picture life in the Community that is based on these principles. I focus on aspects of life in the Yahad that describe the special relationship between God and the Yahad most clearly. Finally, before concluding, I analyse the significance of the 4QS-Fragments asking the question whether the recently published fragments alter the idea of Divine presence as described IQS.

La investigació es va dur a terme durant tres anys, es va aplicar una enquesta a l’inici del curs acadèmic i una altra al finalitzar, d’aquesta manera es determina el nivell de millora en les competències, a través d’una autoavaluació per part dels estudiants i una coavaluació per part dels tutors. Els resultats que s’han obtingut al llarg d’aquests anys permeten afirmar que ambdues avaluacions tenen un component de similitud, per tant, existeix certa objectivitat a l’hora de valorar la percepció del nivell de competències. Al mateix temps, cal destacar que es va generar una eina pràctica que permet conèixer de manera individualitzada la coavaluació de competències, això pot ser útil de cara al seu futur professional, ja que aporta informació addicional al de les qualificacions. Com a resultat singular que s’ha concebut a través de la investigació, es troba la comparació entre la titulació del Grau en Administració i Direcció d’Empreses (GADE) i la Llicenciatura en Administració i Direcció d’Empreses (LADE), es percep que els resultats son similars al finalitzar el curs acadèmic, però a l’inici existeix certa variació en favor dels estudiants de Llicenciatura.
La presente investigación muestra el diseño y aplicación de una metodología de coevaluación de competencias basada en la recolección de información de estudiantes y tutores relacionadas con la percepción del nivel de competencias que se desarrollan en el Proyecto Final de Carrera en la titulación del Grado en Administración y Dirección de Empresas en IQS School of Management de la Universitat Ramon Llull. La investigación se llevó a cabo durante tres años, se aplicó una encuesta al inicio del curso académico y otra al finalizar, de esta manera se determina el nivel de mejora en las competencias, a través de una autoevaluación por parte de los estudiantes y una coevaluación por parte de los tutores. Los resultados que se han obtenido a lo largo estos años permiten afirmar que ambas evaluaciones tienen un componente de similitud, por lo tanto, existe cierta objetividad a la hora de valorar la percepción del nivel de competencias. A su vez, cabe destacar que se generó una herramienta práctica que permite conocer de manera individualizada la coevaluación de competencias, esto puede ser útil de cara a su futuro profesional, ya que aporta información adicional al de las calificaciones. Como resultado singular que se ha concebido a través de la investigación, se encuentra la comparación entre la titulación del Grado en Administración y Dirección de Empresas (GADE) y la Licenciatura en Administración y Dirección de Empresas (LADE), se aprecia que los resultados son similares al finalizar el curso académico, pero al inicio existe cierta variación en favor de los estudiantes de Licenciatura.
This research shows design and implementation of the competences co-evaluation methodology based on the information collected from students and tutors regarding perceived level of skills developed in the Final Degree Project of Business Administration and Management Degree in the IQS School of Management of Ramon Llull University. The research has been carried out for three years. At the beginning and in the end of academic course a survey has been applied in order to determine the level of skills improvement through students’ self-evaluation on the one hand, and tutors co-evaluation on another hand. The results obtained during these years allow concluding that both evaluations have similar components; therefore there is certain objectivity in evaluating of perceived level of skills. At the same time, it is noteworthy that this newly generated practical technique allows knowing the competences co-evaluation in an individualized manner. It can be useful for professional future of the students as it provides additional information to the marks. The singular result of this research shows the comparison between the Business Administration and Management Grade (BAMG) and Business Administration and Management Degree (BAMD), where the results are similar in the end of academic year, but at the beginning there is certain variation in favor of Degree students.

This study is an investigation of the link between the current South African Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) as an assessment process and teacher professional development in South Africa. A review of literature confirms that teacher assessment should and could facilitate teacher professional development. However, how teacher assessment affects teacher professional development has not been fully recognized. There is, however, little empirical research available on how teacher assessment affects teacher professional development. Steyn and van Niekerk (2002) have noticed that little is known on the kind of support that teachers should receive as a result of teacher assessment. As a result, people are unclear on how teacher assessment should be implemented in order to yield effective teacher professional development. Though the government took numerous efforts to ensure greater teacher accountability and functional schools over some years via policy interventions such as IQMS, there are still deep-seated challenges that hamper these interventions from working effectively. Therefore, the qualitative case study has used three secondary schools in Limpopo, Capricorn District as the research sites to explore the role of IQMS in teacher professional development. The results from the participants indicate that IQMS is effective but only if a numbers of issues can be considered. Participants highlighted issues like, if every teacher can be trained, and there could be quality training with competitive facilitators, also, if there could be a conducive culture and the climate of the school then that could impact positively on teacher development.

Dans le nouveau paysage de convergence multiservices de l'approche NGN/IMS et en considérant les besoins de l'utilisateur NGN qui est mobile dans un environnement très hétérogène, nous avons proposé des adaptations informationnelles, architecturales et organisationnelles. Ces adaptations permettent de surveiller la mobilité inter et intra réseaux et de garantir la continuité de la QoS de bout en bout dans un environnement mono et multi provider(s). En effet, nous avons constaté que les bases de connaissances des profils des utilisateurs manquaient d'informations de QoS. Notre première contribution est donc d'ordre informationnel. Des informations de QoS sont ajoutées à la base HSS afin de l'enrichir. Ce que nous y exprimons sous forme de " profil de QoSd ". Ces nouvelles informations renseignent directement sur les décisions à prendre en fonction du profil utilisateur (préférences de QoS et de tarification, bandwidth, localisation, etc. ). Ainsi cette nouvelle base de connaissances orientée QoS permettra les adaptations dynamiques et rendra, par conséquent, la session IMS plus efficace. Nous avons proposé une modélisation de ces informations de QoS relatives aux profils des utilisateurs et aux services IMS offerts en utilisant les classes CIM que nous appelons " Pattern d'information IMS orienté QoS ". Du point de vue architectural, nous avons été amenés à définir de nouveaux composants afin d'intercepter les nouvelles informations de QoS nécessaires pour gérer et garantir la QoS demandée lors d'une session IMS en temps réel. Cette deuxième contribution forme le sous système " Interworking QoS Management Subsystem : IQMS ". IQMS collecte les informations extraites des protocoles impliqués lors d'une session IMS mobile et gère la mobilité des utilisateurs (QoS handover et QoS interworking) et de la session. Notre troisième contribution consiste à proposer un sous-système organisationnel pour la gestion de la QoS supportant la personnalisation du service dans un environnement multi providers, où un utilisateur pourrait s'abonner à un ou plusieurs opérateurs selon des critères de QoS. In the new landscape of multi-service convergence of the NGN/IMS approach and considering the needs of the user of NGN, that is mobile in a very heterogeneous environment, we have proposed informational, architectural and organizational adaptations in order to monitor the inter network mobility of access and ensure the complete continuity of the QoS in such an environment. Indeed, we have noticed that the bases of the knowledge of the users' profiles lack decision-making information relative to a later analysis. Consequently, there is a need to raise the level of abstraction of the available information. Our first contribution is therefore informational. Decisional information are added to the HSS basis to enrich the knowledge base, which is expressed under the form of "profile of QoSd", where the new information inform directly the decisions to be taken according to the user's profile (preferences QoS and pricing, bandwidth, location. . . . ). Thus, this new knowledge basis will allow dynamic adaptations and will, therefore, make the IMS session more effective. We have, therefore, modeled QoS information relative to users' profiles and IMS offered services by using the CIM classes that we call "QoS Pattern of the IMS information". From the architectural point of view, we have simulated new components to intercept the useful lacking information to ensure the management of an IMS session in real time. Our second contribution consists in adding new components of constituent management IQMS: "Interworking QoS Management Subsystem", that collect the extracted information from the protocols at all levels in a mobile IMS session and will be able to manage the users' mobility (QoS handover and QoS interworking). Background: Tobacco and nicotine contained in it belongs to the substances with the highest addiction potential. The harmfulness of conventional cigarettes is a publicly known fact, and this is one of the reasons why producers are trying to market other tobacco alternatives. One of them is heated tobacco IQOS, which has only recently appeared on the market in the Czech Republic. IQOS users are an unexplored and unspecified social group whose patterns of use and characteristics are not adequately described in terms of expertise. Aims: The primary objective of the study was to describe the typical patterns of IQOS use among tobacco users in the Czech Republic, who left smoking conventional cigarettes and converted to the use of heated tobacco. The secondary objectives were to describe the characteristics of IQOS use, users' paraphernalia relationships, motivation to convert to the IQOS and the development of patterns of use over a two-month period. Background: In recent years, novel heated tobacco products such as IQOS or glo, which began to appear on the Czech market about three years ago, gained popularity. The device is visually appealing in which, unlike regular cigarettes, tobacco is not burned but heated to a temperature of 350 řC. There are several foreign studies on how these tobacco heating products are used, but there is a lack of data on this phenomenon in Czech Republic. Aims: The main aim of this study was to describe patterns of use of heated tobacco products among adult tobacco users in the Czech Republic. Partial aims of the study were to find out what are the motives for using heating tobacco products, what is the nature of use, i.e. the time of use, daily consumption of fillings, and if there is any change in habits of ordinary smoking. Furthermore, the aim was to map in which situations heated tobacco products are used and how the users take care of the equipment. Over the years, consumption habits have suffered some changes. The consumer has more access to information and, consequently, is more demanding when selecting goods and services. Moreover, and regarding, smoking habits, there is also a greater awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco and, so the attempts to quit this addiction are increasing. Faced with this reality, companies in the tobacco industry felt the need to keep up with trends and transform their strategies, which is the case of Tabaqueira. Tabaqueira, an affiliate of Philip Morris International, is a Portuguese firm, which has been in the market since 1927 and is responsible for the production and commerce of international tobacco brands. This company has invested in products with reduced risk and, in 2015, launched, in Portugal, IQOS, an electronic innovative device that is potentially less harmful than ordinary cigarettes since it has no combustion. With this thesis, I will try to understand what is the perception and acceptance of IQOS in the Portuguese market. Therefore, I will analyse the changes in smoking habits and examine the main reasons that led to the introduction of IQOS. Finally, I will explore the sustainability of Tabaqueira’s strategy.
Ao longo dos anos os hábitos de consumo têm sofrido algumas alterações. O consumidor tem cada vez mais acesso à informação e consequentemente é mais exigente na escolha dos produtos. Em relação ao tabagismo existe também uma maior consciência dos malefícios associados ao tabaco que têm incentivado a tentativa de abandono deste vício. Face a esta realidade empresas inseridas no sector do tabaco sentiram a necessidade de acompanhar as novas tendências, alterando ou até mesmo reformulando as suas estratégias, como é o caso da Tabaqueira. A Tabaqueira, subsidiária da Philip Morris Internacional é uma empresa portuguesa que está presente no sector do tabaco desde 1927 e é responsável pela produção e comercialização de marcas internacionais e nacionais de tabaco. Ao longo dos anos, a empresa decidiu investir na categoria de produtos de risco reduzido e em 2015 a marca lançou em Portugal o IQOS, um dispositivo electrónico inovador que é potencialmente menos prejudicial para a saúde, uma vez que não tem combustão. O propósito da minha tese é perceber qual a aceitação e perceção do IQOS no mercado português. Desta forma, vou analisar as diferenças de comportamento do consumidor face ao tabagismo e quais os principais motivos para a introdução do IQOS. Consequentemente irei explorar a viabilidade da estratégia da Tabaqueira.

This paper explores the causes that influence the intention to continue using heated tobacco product. These products are gaining popularity due to claims of reduced danger to consumers’ health, which is a major concern amongst active smokers nowadays, but is this the only reason? An adaption of the expectation-confirmation model was used to develop the research model along with other external constructs. The purpose of this research is to understand what is behind the intention of continuing to use the products instead of conventional tobacco products (e.g., cigarettes) by conducting a survey to IQOS smokers, Philip Morris’ heated tobacco product. Based on a sample of 175 Portuguese respondents we conclude that satisfaction and brand trust are the main enhancers of IQOS continuance intention. Additionally, we find that risk perception is not a relevant factor to explain the continuance intention.

O consumo de dispositivos electrónicos de dispensa de nicotina, conhecidos por cigarros electrónicos – e-cig - aumentou rapidamente a nível global, principalmente numa faixa etária mais jovem. Actualmente é visto como uma alternativa mais saudável aos cigarros tradicionais de tabaco. No entanto, o seu consumo mantém-se controverso, devido à limitada evidência científica dos efeitos tóxicos a curto e a longo prazo. Este trabalho pretende fornecer uma revisão actualizada acerca do perfil toxicológico destes dispositivos no sistema respiratório, sintetizando a literatura existente a partir de cultura de células, modelos animais e humanos. Em suma, a toxicidade do e-cig provém dos constituintes do dispositivo, sendo uma fonte de metais tóxicos; e do e-líquido, com quantidades variáveis de nicotina e aromatizantes. Embora o consumo do e-cig a curto prazo não apresente alterações significativas na função pulmonar, os efeitos deletérios a longo prazo, no sistema respiratório estão associados a um estado pró-inflamatório induzido, destacando-se os diagnósticos de novo de asma e bronquite crónica, e no sistema imunitário das vias aéreas, estão associados a uma resposta menos eficaz às infecções. Destaca-se ainda que, a exposição crónica ao e-cig induz a um estado de proliferação celular descontrolada, pela sobreexpressão dos AChR α7 nas vias aéreas, que poderá ter como consequência a neoplasia do pulmão. Por último, faz-se referência ao aparecimento de um aparelho mais recente que o e- cig, nomeadamente, o IQOS – “I-Quit-Ordinary-Smoking”. Este aparelho consiste no aquecimento do tabaco, e segundo alguns estudos, assim como o e-cig, também produz substâncias carcinogénicas e de nicotina, prejudiciais à saúde.
The consumption of electronic nicotine delivery systems, known as electronic cigarettes, has rapidly increased globally, especially in a younger group. Perceived and marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes, it use remains controversial because of the limited scientific evidence of short and long-term effects. This work provides an updated review about the toxicological profile of these devices in the respiratory system, synthesizing the existing literature from cell culture, animal models and humans. In summary, the toxicity of the e-cig comes from the components of the device, as a source of toxic metals; and e-liquid, with varying amounts of nicotine and flavorings. Although the consumption of e-cig did not show significant changes in short-term pulmonary function, deleterious long-term effects on the respiratory system are associated with an induced pro-inflammatory state, related to asthma and chronic bronchitis; and to a less effective response to infections on the immune system of the airways. Finally, chronic exposure to e-cig induces a state of uncontrolled cell proliferation, due to the overexpression of AChR α7 in the airways, which may result in lung cancer. A last reference is given to IQOS - "I-Quit-Ordinary-Smoking" - an even more recent system then e-cig, based on heating the cigarette. Studies shows the presence of carcinogenic substances and nicotine in these systems.

It is concluded, that PMI´s bold move to cannibalize their own business enables the company to not only respond to the challenges the cigarette industry is facing by committing to healthier alternatives but also to establish entry barriers for subsequent innovations.

Os PTA originam um aerossol ao aquecer diretamente o tabaco, sem chegar a provocar a sua combustão. Embora sejam publicitados com alegações de risco reduzido relativamente aos cigarros, não são inócuos. Para além da libertação de nicotina, são responsáveis pela emissão de diversos constituintes nocivos. Em geral, os compostos químicos gerados pelos PTA são em quantidades muito menores do que os produzidos pelos cigarros, mas superiores aos dos cigarros eletrónicos. Estes produtos são diferentes e podem causar doenças não causadas pelo tabaco convencional. Apesar de estudos recentes apontarem para uma possível eficácia dos cigarros eletrónicos na cessação tabágica, a segurança a longo prazo é desconhecida e é necessária uma maior investigação. A evidência atual é insuficiente para suportar as alegações da indústria tabaqueira e parece responder unicamente a interesses comerciais, surgindo como uma forma de contornar as políticas de controlo tabágico e perpetuar a dependência de nicotina. Até ao momento, não se conseguiu demonstrar que os novos produtos venham a substituir totalmente os cigarros convencionais sem atrair não-fumadores, sendo especialmente preocupante nos jovens, onde a prevalência é alta e se observou uma associação entre o consumo de cigarros eletrónicos e uma maior probabilidade de iniciação ao tabagismo subsequente.
In the last decades, there has been a decrease in tobacco consumption as a result of the implementation of effective tobacco control policies and measures. At the same time, several alternatives to traditional tobacco have emerged on the market, including electronic nicotine delivery systems (electronic cigarettes) and heated tobacco products (HTP). Electronic cigarettes are devices that heat a liquid containing nicotine, producing an aerosol that consumers inhale. HTP generate an aerosol by directly heating the tobacco, without causing combustion. While being marketed as a less harmful alternative to tobacco, they are not harmless at all. In addition to the release of nicotine, they are responsible for the emission of innumerous harmful constituents. In general, the chemical compounds generated by HTP are fewer than those produced by cigarettes, but higher than the ones generated by electronic cigarettes. These products are different and may cause diseases not caused by conventional tobacco. Although recent studies suggest a possible role of electronic cigarettes in smoking cessation, long-term safety is unknown and warrants further investigation. Current evidence is insufficient to support the claims of the tobacco industry and appears to respond only to commercial interests, emerging as a way of evading tobacco control policies and perpetuating nicotine dependence. The evidence available to date does not convincingly demonstrate that these new products will simply replace conventional cigarettes among current smokers without attracting non-smokers. A special concern lies among youth, where the prevalence is high and an association between initial e-cigarette use and subsequent cigarette smoking initiation was made.

The tobacco industry has been facing several transformations considering that technology has evolved and health concerns have increased. Taking advantage of this trend, Philip Morris International (PMI) introduced IQOS in Portugal, converting several smokers to their heat-not-burn technology. Few independent studies have focused on the consumption of heated tobacco, both in terms of the motivations behind its consumption and the perceptions of its dangerousness. Therefore, this research's main objective is to identify and understand whether or not heated tobacco products are perceived as a smoking cessation product. This study explores the perception of heated tobacco consumption among Portuguese smokers and ex-smokers using one of the models identified in the literature review: The Health Belief Model (HBM). A conceptual model was developed based on its constructs and tested using data obtained through an online survey, that resulted in 247 valid answers. Data were analysed using the SPSS and SmartPLS programs. Results suggest that the perceived benefits of heated tobacco consumption have a reverse influence on the likelihood to quit smoking. Perceived threats of smoking (perceived Susceptibility and perceived Severity) were not considered reliable variables. From a practical point of view, the results indicate that heated tobacco products do not work as an auxiliary product in the intention to quit smoking, being, in some cases, an influential factor in the increase of smoking dependence.
A indústria do tabaco tem vindo a enfrentar várias transformações, com a evolução da tecnologia e o aumento das preocupações com a saúde. Aproveitando esta tendência, a Philip Morris International (PMI) introduziu o IQOS em Portugal, convertendo vários fumadores à sua tecnologia de tabaco aquecido. Poucos estudos independentes incidiram sobre o consumo do tabaco aquecido, tanto no que diz respeito às motivações para o seu consumo, como no que diz respeito às perceções da nocividade do mesmo. Assim sendo, o objetivo desta investigação é identificar e perceber se o tabaco aquecido é ou não percebido como um produto influenciador na cessação do tabagismo. O estudo visa explorar a perceção do consumo de tabaco aquecido entre fumadores e ex-fumadores portugueses, utilizando um dos modelos identificados na revisão de literatura: o Health Belief Model (HBM). A partir das suas componentes, elaborou-se um modelo conceptual que foi testado com recurso a dados obtidos através de um questionário online, do qual resultaram 247 respostas válidas. Os dados foram analisados com o auxílio dos programas SPSS e SmartPLS. Os resultados sugerem que os benefícios percebidos do consumo de produtos de tabaco aquecido têm uma influência inversa à intenção de deixar de fumar. Já as ameaças percebidas de fumar (perceção de suscetibilidade e perceção de gravidade) não foram consideradas como variáveis fiáveis. De um ponto de vista prático, os resultados indicam que o tabaco aquecido não funciona como um produto auxiliar à intenção de deixar de fumar, chegando, em certos casos, a aumentar a dependência do tabaco.

This study primarily looked at teachers¡¦ experiences of the IQMS evaluation and its impact on their professional development. IQMS has been actively introduced at the school system for the past five years. The purpose of this study is two fold. Firstly, this study wants to explore the outcomes of IQMS within the school context with a specific focus on outcomes relates to teachers. Secondly, this study wants to document the experience of schools¡¦ trip through the IQMS process from the perspectives of teachers and the school managers. A survey methodology was used to produce the data together with the analysis thereof. Some of the key findings from this study reveal that: Teachers with lower teaching qualifications and teaching experiences perceived IQMS to be beneficial to them, while teachers with higher qualifications and longer teaching experiences were suspicious of the IQMS process. Younger teachers tend to have more positive feelings towards IQMS while older teachers tend to have negative feelings towards IQMS. On the other hand middle aged teachers tend to have mixed feelings towards IQMS. The IQMS evaluation report had a positive impact on teachers in general, in terms of them identifying a need to develop themselves. Some of the key recommendations in relation to this study are: The Department of Education should ensure that sufficient workshops and trainings are properly planned and provision is made for in service training of teachers. Quality education can only be possible if the Department of Education ensures that all schools are well resourced.

Current demands in education necessitate a shift away from traditional inspection and supervision models for school improvement, toward a transparent and democratic approach for Whole School Development (WSD). This has resulted in the need for schools to implement an Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS). The IGMS, in an educational context, is a collective concept that integrates three fundamental components of WSD, namely the Developmental Appraisal System (DAS), the Performance Measurement (PM) and Whole School Evaluation (WSE). This study investigates the implementation of the IQMS in secondary schools within the Umlazi district. Insight into the IQMS is provided via a review of relevant literature. Furthermore, questionnaires have been used to access data from educators about the implementation of the IQMS. Although most secondary schools have introduced the IQMS, many educators are still confused, not only about the process of implementing the IQMS, but also about the concepts used by the IQMS. Key findings of this study indicate the following: • In some schools, educators do not understand the IQMS instrument. • Advocacy and training programmes, in respect of the IQMS, are ineffective in some schools. • Some IQMS structures are not yet in place. Although the majority of educators indicated that they were aware of the IQMS instrument, 32% of the educators who participated in the survey indicated they had never heard about the IQMS instrument for educator evaluation. It is evident that such educators need greater exposure to the IQMS through advocacy and training programmes. It is also clear from this study that most schools are aware of the IQMS instrument but that implementation thereof remains problematic. This study is significant in that it exposes, in its findings, some of the problems experienced by schools in the implementation of the 1QMS. Recommendations to address some of these limitations are made in the last chapter of this publication.

The implementation of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) is analysed with interest in its effect on professional development of the teaching staff. This analysis is done through the experiences and perceptions of educators who are involved in this process. IQMS is a national policy of appraising and developing the teaching staff and was formed after an agreement was reached between the South African Department of Education and the teacher organizations in 2003. It was scheduled to be implemented in 2004. This article determines teacher appraisal processes on an international level and how similar appraisal processes are applied in South African context and then determines how educators in the South African context experience and perceive the effects of their appraisal process (IQMS) on their professional development.

The study reviews the implementation of DAS and IQMS in Vulindlela Circuit from 2003 to 2006. The systems thinking approach and Soft Systems Methodology served as a point of leverage in identifying problematic situations besetting the implementation of DAS and IQMS. The use of systems tools provided the means for creating dialogue between the facilitator and the SMT members and principals. The study illustrates the use of the systems maps, spray diagrams, iceberg tool, brainwriting and rich pictures in surfacing the assumptions and beliefs about the failure of DAS and IQMS. With this approach, SMTs and principals developed their ideas about the way they could implement DAS and IQMS. Systems thinking provided a perspective for approaching the problematic situations. A conceptual model for DAS and IQMS evolved though the collaborative efforts of SMT members and principals. A developmental and holistic model evolved from this process of school development. A new way of thinking about problematic situations is presented to participants. A process of dialogue set the stage for. school development. Notable improvements are highlighted as indicators of improvement during the implementation of DAS and IQMS. The approach promotes active participation, dialogue, reflection and continuous inquiry and a shared vision in the formulation of conceptual models.

Integrated Quality Management System is a model used for appraising teachers in South Africa and has been in use post-1994. The study shed light on the historical development that shaped the current model used for appraising teachers, especially after 1994. IQMS as a model for appraisal was introduced as a direct response after the collapse of the inspection system which was autocratic and highly subjective. Using a case study approach, two schools in Soweto were purposefully selected because of the strong leadership and data was collected from eleven teachers and two principals. The study aims to investigate the role of the school leadership in mediating IQMS at school level. The study employed interviews, questionnaires and document analysis. The research is concerned with the lived experiences of individual teachers in the confines of the environment that they are most comfortable in. This research was taken from the interpretivist position which views the world as constructed by means of multi perspectives. The study argues that the leadership at school level has a prominent role to play in mediating IQMS despite the tensions inherent therein.

This study looked at the way poor-performing public secondary schools in Gauteng Province understand school accountability; their current internal accountability instruments; the way professional development is conducted; and their engagement with the Integrated Quality Management System, the external school accountability system. The intention of the study was to identify possible instruments to mobilise bureaucratic and professional accountability in poor-performing secondary schools. The study was a case study of three poor-performing secondary schools and relied on teachers and principals at these schools to learn their understanding and reactions to the notion of accountability. The study revealed that such schools use bureaucratic instruments (such as attendance registers) to realise accountability and to create structure and routine in their schools. However, where leadership is weak, even these bureaucratic tools such as attendance registers are ineffective. These schools do not take action against non-conformance by teachers and principals. In the schools investigated, accountability was seen as ‘doing your work as you were trained to do during your pre-service training and reporting on learner performance’. The study revealed that, to move towards greater professional accountability in the school sector, a long-term approach is needed that is underscored by ongoing professional development complemented with pressure or performance management. Equally important is the need to build collective power through improving knowledge and skills and motivation for improvement amongst both teachers and school managers.

This research project examines the successes and challenges of processes involved in the implementation of the Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) in six secondary schools. The focus of this study is limited to six secondary schools in the Umgungundlovu District in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The research seeks to critically trace the evolution of the IQMS as a policy strategy for the implementation of teacher appraisal in South African schools. The research also explores appraisal measures in place prior to the introduction of the IQMS in schools. The analytical framework uses forward and backward mapping as analytical tools to guide the data analysis. The methodology is a case study approach with qualitative interviews with principals, heads of departments and post-level one educators. The findings indicate that while progressing adequately, there are a number of areas of concern with the implementation of IQMS. The report makes several recommendations regarding these.
