Resumen
What is a miracle? Who believes in their possibility? What is the historical context within which they emerge? These and related questions have vexed, puzzled and, indeed, enthused scholars and believers, atheists and non-believers alike down the ages. This book examines this perennially fascinating subject of miracles with a comparative focus on two of the world’s great monotheistic religions, Islam and Christianity. Other texts have often approached the subject from a strictly theological, faith or, alternatively, rationalistic, perspective and made it their concern to prove or disprove the possibility of an alleged miraculous event. The approach adopted in this volume is quite different. It is strictly anthropological and phenomenological and the miracles are viewed in a new and dynamic fashion through the lens of narratology. The book examines the stories behind these miracles, the contexts which gave rise to them and allowed them to garner belief and flourish. Perspectives covered include the views of believers and non-believers alike in these phenomena. Similarities and differences in context and approach are explored with a primary focus on the five main anthropological topoi of food, water, blood, wood and stone, and cosmology. A range of intertextual elements in both these Islamic and Christian traditions is discerned.

Resumen
The doctrine of salvation in Islam centers on the community of believers. Contemporary Muslim political philosophy (or, preferably, political theory) covers a broad expanse that brings under its rubric at least two diverse tendencies: an approach that stresses the integration of religion and politics, and an approach that insists on their separation. Advocates of the first approach seem united in their desire for the “Islamization of knowledge,” meaning that the epistemological foundation of understanding and explanation in all areas of life, including all areas of political life, must be “Islamic.” Thus, one needs to speak of an “Islamic anthropology,” an “Islamic sociology,” an “Islamic political science,” and so on. But there is also a distinction that one may make among advocates of this first approach. Moreover, one can say about many, perhaps most, advocates of the first approach that they feel an urgency to apply Islamic law throughout all arenas of society. This article focuses on the Muslim tradition of political philosophy and considers the following themes: the individual and society, the state, and democracy.

Resumen
In Q 33:69 the believers are warned not to be like ‘those who hurt Moses’. Classical exegetes and modern scholars have linked this enigmatic reference to various episodes from Moses’ life. After surveying the different interpretations, this chapter argues that the context of surah 33 and a variant reading of verse 69 support those modern scholars who linked the verse to Miriam and Aaron’s criticism of Moses’ marriage in Numbers 12. Finally, the chapter suggests that this interpretation of Q 33:69 fits well with what we know of Muhammad’s family life from the Qurʾan and later Islamic traditions. If this study is in any way indicative, qur’anic scholarship stands to benefit from combining lower criticism, contextual readings, attention to pre-Islamic lore, and a consideration of traditions concerning Muhammad’s life.

Resumen
This essay explores some of the common patterns in the history of communism in Muslim-majority societies. The most important of these had little to with Islam. Rather, they reflected the impact of European imperialism and nationalist resistance, the uneven tempo of integration into the global economy, the timing of the anti-colonial revolutions and the location of the post-colonial regimes in the great games of geopolitics. However, the other side of this narrative is the interwoven story of the decline of communist movements in most Muslim-majority societies and the rise of their Islamist competitors. It is argued that this trajectory is best explained not by recourse to essentialist explanations about the appeal of Islamist politics to Muslim believers, but by the failures of the post-colonial states on which the communists had pinned their hopes for national liberation and non-capitalist development.

Resumen
This book of essays covers a wide range of topics in the history of Albania and Kosovo. Many of the essays illuminate connections between the Albanian lands and external powers and interests, whether political, military, diplomatic or religious. Such topics include the Habsburg invasion of Kosovo in 1689, the manoeuvrings of Britain and France towards the Albanian lands during the Napoleonic Wars, the British interest in those lands in the late nineteenth century, and the Balkan War of 1912. On the religious side, essays examine ‘crypto-Christianity’ in Kosovo during the Ottoman period, the stories of conversion to Islam revealed by Inquisition records, the first theological treatise written in Albanian (1685), and the work of the ‘Apostolic Delegate’ who reformed the Catholic Church in early twentieth-century Albania. Some essays bring to life ordinary individuals hitherto unknown to history: women hauled before the Inquisition, for example, or the author of the first Albanian autobiography. The longest essay, on Ali Pasha, tells for the first time the full story of the role he played in the international politics of the Napoleonic Wars. Some of these studies have been printed before (several in hard-to-find publications, and one only in Albanian), but the greater part of this book appears here for the first time. This is not only a contribution to Albanian and Balkan history it also engages with many broader issues, including religious conversion, methods of enslavement within the Ottoman Empire, and the nature of modern myth-making about national identity.

Resumen
The present chapter seeks to show just how little is known about Jews and Judaism at the time of Muhammad. Whereas many want to argue that a stable Judaism acted as a “midwife” to the birth of Islam in the seventh century, this chapter argues that there is very little material evidence to support with any degree of certainty just what kind of Jews Muhammad interacted with (if he, in fact did). In addition to this dearth of material evidence, the Islamic sources describing these Jews are later, often much later, than the period upon which they purport to describe. The claim that the Jews gave birth to Islam, then, are both ludicrous and self-serving. The chapter suggests that the later Muslim sources transformed the Jews that Muhammad was believed to have had contact with into what they considered to be normative Jews.

Resumen
Partnership-based was widely practised in the pre-Islamic period. The practice was so commonly prevalent among the muslim and non-muslim.This book is hoped to be of assistance to those who wish to discover the shariah contracts for partnership and the methods of structuring the current Islamic financial products and instruments through adopting either an existing Islamic contract or by combining two or more thereof. As for students and lecturers, this book is sought to be a reference for Islamic banking and finance related courses. It can also be a reference to the general members of the public who are interested to learn about the basic principles in the paramaterizing the shariah rulings for Islamic partnership contracts and to obtain issues about the Islamic banking and financial products. All readers may realize, that the first two chapters have briefly discussed the introduction to fiqh and shariah and the rule-making process of the areas in Islamic law.The main purpose of the book is to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the principles and basis of adopting the shariah contracts for Islamic financial products, as well as enabling the harmonization of the Islamic financial practices into shariah parameters of each contract.Nevertheless, the basic and important discussion on fiqh, shariah and the procedure of law-making process is believed tobe sufficiently covered in this book.
