Resumen
The intellectual development in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) could be generally divided into two phases, with the first one inherited from the Han Wei period focusing on the meaning of words, while the second phase focuses on the teaching of the Confucian classics. Among the various scholars during the course of this transformation, Dan Zhu (啖助,724-770) has been recognized as a non-mainstream but yet very influential character. To avoid the An-Shi Rebellion, Dan Zhu resided in the south-eastern part of the country where he taught Lu Chun (陸淳) the Chun Qiu (春秋) classic. Many famous Tang political reformers including Lu Wen (呂溫) and Liu Zong Yuan (柳宗元) are considered by historians as Dan Zhu’s students and followers. This has made Dan Zhu even more influential than other Confucius scholars in that period. Nevertheless, due to the controversial nature of his teachings, Dan Zhu was heavily criticized by Ouyang Xiu (歐陽修) as being specious and at the same time appraised by Cheng Yi (程頤) to be one of the fore-runners who founded the Song Confucianism. This research reveals that Dan Zhu abandons the approach of focusing on the meaning wording and goes directly into the teachings of the classics. He considers that there are large amount of mistakes in the then contemporary explanation of Chun Qiu, he also considers that Tang scholars have not just worked in isolation without much view sharing, but also misinterpreted Confucius’ teachings. Moreover, the Tang scholars are treating Chun Qiu as history or even as literature, rather than Confucius’ teaching on how the society should be run. From Dan Zhu’s perspective, Confucius was trying to make use of histories to set proper behavioural standards and protocols for running the country, with an objective of saving the imperial control of Zhou (周). During the mid-Tang period, China was undergoing major social changes from a feudal to a modern society. Tang imperials whose ancestors carried a nomadic blood stream tried to strengthen their control by adopting Confucianism; and placing more emphasis on the south-eastern region where the Han Chinese of the Southern Dynasty was concentrated. Coupling with the civil examination (科舉) reform and the impacts of Zen Buddhism, the Tang society was undergoing major social-political transformation which Dan Zhu was situated right on its course. The research concludes that Dan Zhu’s ideas fit well with Xuan-zong’s (唐玄宗) appeal for revival of Confucius teachings and the social-political setting in Mid-Tang. Although Dan Zhu is considered a non-mainstream scholar, his teachings have brought about significant impacts on later development of the Neo-Confucianism. Nonetheless, Dan Zhu has not deviated from the fundamental principles of a Confucian whose destiny is to serve the people and the country, and of course for Dan Zhu, the Tang Dynasty.

Resumen
Aristotle stated in his Poetics that theatre's dual purpose was to educate and entertain. Centuries later the Roman Horace and Indian Bharata echoed his same sentiments. I intend to realize all three theorist's ideas on the theatre by creating an original educational and entertaining work and bringing it to performance. The audience will retain information without being aware of learning if it is presented in a pleasurable way. The most important geopolitical relationship of this century will be between China and America. In order to educate the American public about the culture of The Middle Kingdom, I propose to write and direct my own play, condensing all three thousand years of Chinese literature into a one hundred and ten minute performance. I will benefit from the personal nature of this thesis by experiencing every stage of a play's production: from idea to page to performance. My thesis will be made of three major parts: conceiving and writing the play, a journal of directing the debut production, and a third section made of choices, influences, and reflection on the entire experience. In this manner, the ideas swirling in my head may be made clear to others reading this thesis. The play itself will be a comical distillation of ten selected works of Chinese literature. Four non-gender specific American actors will seem to make up the show as it performs in a tongue-in-cheek way. Taking my stated goal of entertaining and educating the audience to heart, the overarching plot of the play will center on the four actors teaching the audience about the literature and culture of China by acting out scenes and telling stories. The information in the scenes will be targeted to a normal American citizen's educational level with liberal doses of humor added. The four actors will be playing fictionalized versions of themselves and at times breaking character by explaining and setting up the theatricality of the piece to the audience. Part of the fun of the show will be seeing how these actors explain a subject as obtuse as Chinese literature to Americans. Perhaps a cooking metaphor is the best way to think of the play: I will chop up raw Chinese literature, the actors will boil it onstage, the theatregoer will consume the mix, and exit the theatre full of entertaining intellectual nourishment. My experiences directing and producing the finished play will be recorded in a journal as a resource for future directors. I imagine directing the play will be the most challenging aspect of this thesis. How is the play changed when other people interact with it? How will the audience receive it? In addition, Committee Chair Mark Routhier and my thesis Committee Members, Mark Brotherton and Tan Huaixiang, will also give written responses to the play's performances. The play will be performed October 10-13, 2013 in the University of Central Florida's Performing Arts Complex Studio 2 classroom. In the final section I will write a reflection on the entire process. This will serve the dual purpose of giving me a place to collect my thoughts and giving others a special insight to the growth they might experience when producing this play. Foremost among my influences in writing a play with this subject matter are the style and tone of The Reduced Shakespeare Company.

Resumen
Han Shu is our first history book which narrates the story by dynasty. It carries a lot of valuable information of the Han dynasty, both historically and literarily. However, because of the long-ago history, a lot of language, pronunciation, naming system, names of officials and places are now difficult to read and understand. Throughout the history, a number of people had analyzed Han Shu. These people have solved a lot of queries. Yang Shuda has high achievements in analyzing Han Shu. He is not only good at etymology and phonology but also analyzing parts of speech and sentence patterns. In terms of the use of materials, not only does he compare different versions of literature, but also uses inscriptions and even cultural data such as marriage and death for analysis. All these contribute to his unique analysis. The analysis of Han Shu has opened up a new field as more and more materials are excavated. Bronze, lacquer and even lute and currency are used in research. This has broadened the academic horizons and solved many mysteries. In 1983, in Hubei province, a lot of Han bamboo slips were excavated, which have provided tremendous help to our understanding of the medicine, law, mathematics and others of the Han dynasty. By the time when current books of Han analysis such as Yang Shuda’s Han Shu Kui Guan were punished, bamboo clips of Zhangjiashan were not yet unearthed. It is unable to invoke this important information, resulting in some doubtful content. I hereby try to make use of these bamboo slips to supplement previous comments, provide new research directions, or affirm previous results. This dissertation is divided to six parts. Each uses the notes of current analysts as the starting point while incorporating Zhangjiashan Han bamboo slips. My analysis is based on Yang Shuda Han Shu Kui Guan, together with the analysis of some current analysts.

The thesis is about restoration process of Guan-Di Temple of Ba-Ji-Jing which is a registered historical architectures, there are four issues appeared in restoration process: 1. The restoration committee had lack of understanding in its responsibility and knowledge toured Cultural Heritage Preservation Act. 2. The committee decided to do self-restore due to short in funding which could not meet the Preservation Act requirement. 3. The public sector could not give clear information about registered historical architecture in restoration standard. 4. The process in historical architecture registration is vague. Issues can then conclude into three categories: 1. The clarity in responsibility of committee is unknown. 2. The cognitive gap in restoration. 3. The vague procedure in historical building registration. The solutions of issues from restoration process: 1. To assemble public hearing as third party to establish the accountability system in committee. 2. To create a restoration evaluation form for non-professional background personnel, such as temple committee. 3. To set up goal and standard with high clarity for historical architectures registration and restoration.

This study attempts to explore the initial consonant cluster of Archaic Chinese from “Guang Yun (廣韻)” and “Jing Dian Shih Wen (經典釋文)” on the basis of the existence affirmed by modern researches about Archaic Chinese. The “polyphony” means one word has more than one pronunciation. The initial consonant cluster evolved into sole initial consonant from Archaic Chinese to Ancient Chinese. Furthermore, we deduced that the initial consonant cluster disappeared in Han Dynasty since the explicit evidences are fewer and fewer after Han Dynasty. The initial consonant cluster does not exist in modern language and dialect nowadays. The investigative materials of initial consonant cluster are sound gloss, “du ruo (讀若)”, “chong wen (重文)”, alternative script, rhyming binomes, phonetic radical, and paronym of Sino-Tibetan diaphone. “Polyphony” is adopted as the main material in this thesis; meanwhile, phonetic radical and paronym of Sino-Tibetan diaphone are treated as additional information. This study stresses on how to infer the evolving rules and the structures of initial consonant cluster from Ancient Chinese. We tried to find the evidence diachronically and synchronically. Diachronically, we looked up the polyphonic words in “Guang Yun” and “Jing Dian Shih Wen”, and some information from Ancient Miao-Yao Language is taken to be verification as well. Synchronically, we also looked for similar sounding words in English, and discovered other evidences from some modern languages of Sino-Tibetan minorities.

A study on the Xiangsu and Yili of “Twelve Xiao Xi Gua” by Meng Xi and Jing Fang Abstract Meng Xi (90-40 BC) and Jing Fang (77-37BC) were the two representative masters of the Book of Changes during the Han Dynasty, who applied “Gua Qi theory” (卦氣說, a theory describing the correspondence between the hexagrams and 24 Chinese seasonal division points) to explain the ideas in the Book of Changes, and employed this classic to explain the alternation of Yin/Yang and disaster/fortune. This period was categorized by subsequent scholars as the development of Xiangsu (象數in English; it means image and number, and is an approach to interpret the symbols of change (gua) that makes extensive use of the structural properties of the symbols). Twelve Xiao Xi Gua (十二消息卦represents 12 Months in a Year or 12 Double-Hours in a Day), one of the main concepts of “Gua Qi theory,” was adopted in the study as the basis upon which to investigate Xiangsu and Yili (義理in English; it means meanings and interpretations, an approach to the interpretation of the symbols of change, often contrasted with Xiangsu, which emphasizes the moral and ethical dimensions of the text), as the philosophical essence of the Book of Changes consists of these two elements. In the article, “Discussion on the studies of the Book of Changes,” Huang Shou-qi stated, “[…] in regard to the studies of Xiangsu and Yili, numerous schools of thought had been developed. Therefore, in the study of the Book of Changes, one should explore the “Book of Changes in the Han Dynasty” by examining the “Book of Changes in Han Dynasty,” which is also true to the “Book of Changes in Song Dynasty” (In other words, understanding directly through the body of the texts rather than through the commentary). As for studying the “Book of Changes in the Han Dynasty,” one who studies the schools of thought of Meng Xi and Jing Fang should try to understand their thoughts by exploring their explanations. Such a practice should also be followed by those who study the schools of thought of Zheng Yuan and Yu Fang. […] In regard to the other various schools of thoughts, according to the teaching of one’s teacher-master, he/she carefully collects all the works, corrects the fallacies, and develops the truth in order to restore the original meaning of that school of thought.” As a response to the ideas proposed by Huang, this study took the Pre-Qin Period and early Han Dynasty as the research background in order to further understand the academic succession of Meng Xi and Jing Fang and their later creation of Gua Qi. Nevertheless, the Book of Changes in the Han Dynasty is an ancient classic. Most of the explanations and instructions by Meng and Jing on the examples of the Book of Changes are lost and Meng’s Commentary on the Book of Changes and Jing’s Commentary on the Book of Changes, compiled by later generations, also cannot fully represent the writings of these two masters. Accordingly, coupled with Jiao Shi Yi Lin, Yi Zhuan, “Yi Zhuan • Yao Chapter” in the form of a silk book, the Yi Han Xue written by Hui Dong, and the studies of the Book of Changes by Jiao Xun, this study refers to Meng Xi Zhang Ju, Jing Fan Zhang Ju, Yi Wei, and Xin Tang Sh • Seng Yi Xing Gua Yi to investigate the origin of the school of thought, and further explore the Xiangsu and Yili of the “Twelve Xiao Xi Gua” in Gua Qi theory, in the hope that the academic and life application value of “Twelve Xiao Xi Gua” can be discovered. This study is divided into three parts; first, “era features” and “academic succession” the characteristics, content, examples and authors of the “Gua Qi theory” of the Xiangsu of the Book of Changes in the Han Dynasty are investigated; second, the examples of the “Twelve Xiao Xi Gua” of Gua Qi theory are adopted to investigate the concepts of Xiangsu and Yili, the essence of the Book of Changes, the influence on the social life of later generations and later studies of the Book of Changes, etc.; and third, the influence of Twelve Xiao Xi Gua on later studies of the Book of Changes and the practical value it generates to life are explicated in the conclusion, to delve into the commentaries on the Book of Changes as well as the contributions of the study to agricultural life, architecture and Fengshui theory, aesthetics, Chinese medicine, and health regimen, etc. Keywords: Meng Xi, Jing Fang, “Book of Changes” in Han Dynasty, Xiangsu, Yili, Twelve Xiao Xi Gua, Alternation of Yin/Yang and disaster/fortune

This thesis focuses on the formation of the settlement of mining industry in Jin-gua-shi. The influence of the industry on local life is an important dimension in this research. The formation of Gin-gua-shi settlement attributed to the development of mining industry, which attracted many people to move and settle down in this town. Through 1897 to 1987, the Japanese domination during the colonization period and the administration of Tai-jin company during KMT governance had great influence on the development of this place. The influence is reflected in every aspects of local life, including the economic system, the structure of the space of its settlement, the way of daily consumption and entertainment, and the community ceremonies and rituals. The following are themes and methods of the thesis: 1. To do field research and to describe the natural environment and culture of the settlement so as to represent the characteristics of this mining town will be a main section. The geographical features have great influence on the formation of the settlement. In cultural aspect, I focus on the establishment of the settlement and the process of migration. I approach this issue, the historical development of the mining industry in Jin-gua-shi, from a larger historical background. In this way, we can have further understanding of the influence of the Japanese domination during colonization and the administration of Tai-jin Company during KMT governance. 2. To understand the working condition of the local people, and to explore how the economic system affected habitants after industrialization, which happened during the Japanese domination and the administration of Tai-jin company, is another concern of this paper. Beside, how miners think about their working experience and how the Japanese people established Jin-gua-shi settlement and their influences on the arrangement of the space are also important. This paper explores how the Japanese people and Tai-jin Company dominated the means of consumption and entertainment of local people, and how they affected the community rituals and activities. In the light of Foucault’s interpretation of power, this paper explores how power was maneuvered in all the aspects of daily life in Jin-gua-shi under the domination of Japan. During colonization, the lifestyle of Taiwanese working class was dominated by their economic activities. The working class had no control over their lives. In that situation, the Taiwanese people used community rituals as a means of resistance. Local ceremonies and rituals are means to raise public awareness of the importance of community and to promote public identification of the community. Moreover, through the understanding of the mining industry in Jin-gua-shi , the arrangement of the space in the settlement, the way of daily consumption, entertainment, and community ceremonies and rituals, this paper sheds light on unique characteristics of Jin-gua-shi and distinguishes differences between the settlement of Jin-gua-shi and that of Jiou-fen.

In light of cultural heritage and in order to connect readers with classic novels, book rewriting has been practiced for many years. Book re-writers extract interesting material from classic novels and rewrite or transcribe it for young readers. Early rewritten works were generally in simpler text and had abridged content to present the true spirit and features of the original works. Most people think that rewritten works are not the right path to creativity, thus discussions on rewritten works are scarce. However, among rewritten works in recent years, re-writers have not only highlighted the contents and beauty of classic novels, but have also added new characters, new plots, and a modern spirit with old texts as their references. No longer limited to simplified text and abridged contents, creative ingenuity different from that of the past has been presented. Hence, from the perspective of creative rewriting, this study aimed to address the special features that distinguish rewritten works from the original texts, explore the authors’ intentions, and analyze the creative approaches and techniques different from those in classic novels through comparative analysis of the texts, thereby highlighting the artistic beauty of the creative works, in the search of the future direction of creative rewriting. It was found in this paper that in terms of plot, re-writers are no longer confined to the ideas imparted throughout the classic novels and that these creative rewritten works retain features that correspond to the original reference texts, but are not duplicates of them. There are differences, but unreasonable parts have been changed and plots have been modified, thus revealing the diversity of the subject awareness. These themes revolve around children’s enlightenment and growth. In this paper, the themes are summarized into three points: 1. to resolve the contradictions and conflicts between parents and children through love; 2. the respect between people and between people and objects; and 3. to convey to readers a positive outlook on life and good personality traits to resolve depression and frustration likely encountered by readers as they grow up and to provide examples for readers to learn from. From the perspective of form and skill, the rewritten works are no longer just plain and direct stories. Through the reshaping of the characters, the use of narrative techniques such as viewpoint and order in changed layouts, an old story is given a new style. The stories have been expressed in simple text, while a variety of rhetorical devices have been used to create the delicate beauty of literature, thereby enabling children to unknowingly experience this beauty. Creative rewritten works are a display of re-writers’ children-oriented, literature-oriented, gameplay-oriented, and education-oriented intentions. Based on this viewpoint, the creative rewritten works are indeed brilliant and impressive, and they bridge children and classic novels to enable readers to be exposed to classic novels at an earlier stage in life, thereby enabling them to inherit these cultural treasures.

The execution of review and inspection in Law of Architecture was amended in 1984 to solve the issue of deficiency of architecture management human resources; however, it did not change the goal of the regulation to maintain public safety. In practical application, architecture management authority empowers the designer to certify the structure design of the architecture, except for tall buildings or buildings with special structures. The architecture authority does not visit the construction site at all for structure safety inspection. The decrees of the Supreme Court in 2006 Tai-Shang-Zi, No. 2049 and 2007 Tai-Shang-Zi, No. 14 clearly stated the “Three Lines of Defense” and “Three-level Quality Management” systems: “to ensure the quality of architecture construction based on the national architecture regulations, the Three Lines of Defense includes voluntary inspection system executed by the contractor and the designated engineering personnel, supervisors of the construction supervision system, and the construction inspection system executed by the architecture management authority,” which emphasizes that “the Three Lines of Defense carries out its functions, depends on one another, and none of them is dispensable.” Nevertheless, the last line of defense in “Three Lines of Defense”, the Supreme Court, does not exist anymore in the current architecture management application. The past official documents of architecture management authority indicate why the authority retreated from the control system. The builders or building administration authority heavily depends on the stand and views of architects cultivated by the architectural engineering system for construction inspection because the structure designs are certified by professional architects or technicians and the related construction obligors are held responsible. However, there is a discrepancy on the definitions of “worker supervisor” in violation of established architectural methods and practices and the definitions of “construction supervisor” of Item 193 in Architecture Act in current Criminal Law, which leads to the non-standardized qualification of “worker supervisor” in Item 193 of the Criminal Law for the court and the prosecutors’ offices when handling construction lawsuits. Besides, the collapse of Tainan Wei-Guan Jin-Long Condo on 2/6/2016 during the earthquake causing server casualty finally brought attention to the importance of building safety inspection system. In view of this incident, this study mainly investigates the current architecture construction inspection system in Japan and proposes architecture third party certification system recommendations for regulation establishment (amendment) based on the results, hoping to provide administrative authority with references for regulation establishment (amendment) and put them into practice, which is the core value of this study.
