This thesis involves intensive analyses of some of the short-short stories in John Miles's Liefs nie op straat nie, in order to reveal the narrative strategies employed in each. In other words, it is geared to "the rules that govern ... textual actualization and, consequently, those rules that govern the way literary discourse functions as communication" (Riffaterre 1983: 158). Subsequently, attention is given to the interrelationship among the texts, the way in which they act upon one another and interact with the title of the volume, in order to establish the function of such relations. The following texts are analysed in consecutive chapters: "Lucy", "Lappies, kan jy my hoor, Lappies?", "Voorgevoel", "Dom Nakkie, my Dom Nakkie" and "Wie het nog Dom Nakkie gesien?", "Hy staan by die deur en hy klop", "Gustav gaan speel", and "Liefs nie op straat nie". In a concluding chapter the implications of the title are discussed with reference to all the texts in the volume, including those not analysed individually. It is concluded that, on the one hand, the expectations raised by the title are ironicized because the title is never "completed" explicitly, and because that which, by implication, should not be seen in public ("op straat"), is specifically situated in the street and scrutinized in close-up. But on the other hand the title also evokes a peculiar mentality present in all the texts, either in the narrators, or in the characters, or in both. The discussion of "Lucy" is focussed mainly on the contrast and interaction between the world of the child and that of the adult and on the way in which this interaction is actualized within the text through the contrast in the experience of time, the use of "mémoire involontaire", "durée" and the contrasts between (and overlapping of) narrative perspective and focalization. In respect of "Lappies, kan jy my hoor, Lappies?" special attention is paid to similarities and contrasts between this text and the traditional suspense story, notably the way in which conventional techniques are employed to create suspense, as well as to generate an entire subtext which eventually "relocates" the text on the niveau of the murderer's psychological dilemma. In discussing "Voorgevoel" emphasis is not placed primarily on what is conveyed by the narrator, but on the way in which his intentions are subverted both by the window pane through which he is looking and by the narration as such. In this way he is foregrounded and revealed as narrator, just as the text is foregrounded and revealed as literature, with the emphasis, in both cases, not only on their defence mechanisms but also on their impotence. "Dom Nakkie, my Dom Nakkie" and "Wie het nog Dom Nakkie gesien?" are grouped together in one chapter in order to illuminate the interaction between the two narratives in the first text, as well as the interaction between the two texts. Ultimately, they may be seen as three narratives juxtaposed through irony and relativism. The "triumph" of the "preferably not in public" mentality, both in the text and in society, is also illustrated by the interaction between the three narratives. In chapter, 5, in which "Hy staan by die deur en hy klop" is discussed, attention is focussed on the ironic function of the Biblical references, the contrast between Jan and the rest of society, and the way in which the "climax" is located within the Iserian "blank" in the text, so that the entire process of decoding is based on a filling in of that "blank" and its implications. "Gustav gaan speel" is based loosely on Barthes's lexia model, in order to determine the signifying process in the text, and also to demonstrate the way in which the text presupposes rereading. In the discussion of the title text it is revealed how the text is centered in the basic dichotomy between the narrator-as-writer and the journalist, and the way in which this polarity is relativized by the text as such. The text is demonstrated to be the credo of the volume as a whole as well as of the fiction of the Seventies in Afrikaans.

This thesis project was an experiment in thinking/making. Borrowing from the Renaissance Hermetic Tradition of power magic in the work of Dr. John Dee, it began in contemplative research mode in order to find sources for action. The project had its final goal, a theatrical performance (masque) to be delivered as an act of inter-subjective exchange extending beyond solipsism by means of thinking through actions and things. The interdisciplinary nature of the event spoke of architecture's ability to bring together various modes of abstract expression (literature, theatre, theory, music, etc.) without attempts at explicit meaning but by searching for implicitness in the juxtaposition of messages and mediums. In its historical survey from ancient Greek sacrificial rituals to present butchering practices, the thesis project presents as a crosscurrent a critique of power and its contemporary implications.
This document is a record of the events and actions which led up to the construction and performance of "Theseus Re-membered" on the 11th of June, 1992.

Il semblait qu'en France, depuis plus de trois décennies, l'œuvre de Dos Passos avait été délaissée alors que d'autres écrivains américains de sa génération comme Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, continuaient de bénéficier d'un accueil relativement soutenu et que sa renommée littéraire, acquise avant la la guerre, tenait plus d'une réputation que d'une réelle connaissance d'une œuvre romanesque en constant développement. L'étude de sa réception, comparée a celle de ses pairs, permet de constater que Dos Passos a tout de même connu un accueil critique suivi entre 1921 et 1971, et au-delà, mais que celui-ci a été gravement hypothèque, des 1947, par des considérations idéologiques, qui s'ajoutaient a une insuffisante appréciation esthétique des romans postérieurs a 1938, dont les traductions furent décalées et chronologiquement désordonnées. Ressort de cette étude l'importance du contexte de réception : les opinions politiques, les "images" qu'on se fait du pays "émetteur", sont variables au gré des milieux de ce contexte, des évènements nationaux ou mondiaux. Les question éditoriales ont joué de surcroit un rôle important dans l'appréciation des œuvres reçues, ainsi que les difficultés liées a leur traduction
It seems that in France, for over three decades, the works of Dos Passos have been neglected by critics whereas other American writers of his generation such as Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, still retained the attention of critics. His literary fame gained before the World War II, was based on his reputation rather than a real knowledge of his constantly evolving fiction. Studying how his books were received by critics, as compared to these fellow fellow writers, shows that dos passos's books were received regularly between 1921 and 1971 and even after, but as from 1947 the critics were influenced negatively by ideological considerations and even before, by an inadequate aesthetic appraisal of the novels published after 1938. In addition, the french translations came out much later and not in chronological order. This study shows the importance of the social context in which the books came out in France: the prevailling political opinions, the images of the U. S. A. In the French public, vary with the social milieu, the national or international events, problems relating to publishing have also played a major part in the appraisal of the novels which were reviewed, and account for translation difficulties

The work of John Dee (1527-1608) posits an approach to architecture based upon the concept of wonder. Sympathetic correspondences permeate Dee's disparate practical activities and architectural discourse. His contributions to astronomy, alchemy, cartography and navigation are grounded in the intersubjective cosmology of the Renaissance. It is in Dee's Mathematicall Praeface (1570), which promotes mathematics as a natural philosophy, that the architect's metier is aligned with the marvellous and established as an art encompassing numerous disciplines. Dee's syncretic formulation of architecture is distinctly attuned to the alchemical and magical discourses pervading the Renaissance and established in relation to his hieroglyphic "Monas" symbol. This emblematic device, discussed in the Monas Hieroglyphica (1564), exemplifies the link between architecture and writing. The Monas symbol permits the architect-as-alchemist to contemplate marvels and effect them in practice. In addition to positioning wonder in human activity, as a navigational beacon guiding the work of the architect, Dee signals the possibility of restoring conjuring-the dangerous and denigrated art of sixteenth century England--into architectural practice.

This dissertation concerns itself primarily with deconstruction theory and a number of readings of this novel within the ambit of deconstruction. According to Derrida there is not a single deconstruction and in response to this remark this study undertakes more than one deconstructive reading of the same novel. These different readings are introduced by a preliminary reading of the paratext and a cryptic reading which acknowledges the fragmentary nature of this novel. Hereafter a deconstruction of the novel follows in two phases, of which the first phase focuses on the process of its production. The non-fictitious documents on which the novel is based are revealed and exposed as building blocks during this reading. The second phase of the deconstructive reading is divided into two parts. The first part is based on Derrida’s dredging machine metaphor which introduces and illustrates the concept of random reading. During this phase the novel is acknowledged and read as an intertextual reconstruction. The non-fictitious documents are acknowledged as an archive within the context of recent as well as less recent South African history which serves as intertexts along with other texts. The second part of the second phase involves a reading of this novel as an anti- Hegelian text. Hegel’s concepts of the state and law are brought into the reading process. The reading focuses on the Apartheid State, the police force as an instrument of the state, and offers a critique on the discriminatory laws and the Constitution of the time period within which the novel is contextualised.

Les premiers romans de John Dos Passos s’inscrivent dans le courant moderniste et sont caractérisés par une organisation originale des mots sur la page. Le texte n’est pas un bloc monolothique mais il est découpé en sections et ponctué d’épigraphes. Il contient également une multitude de collages présentés dans des styles et des polices variés. Cette observation est le point de départ de cette étude qui propose d’analyser la matérialité du texte dans les premiers romans de John Dos Passos, Manhattan Transfer et la trilogie USA, publiés entre 1925 et 1938. Ces ouvrages interrogent le regard du lecteur sur le texte, en montrant ce qui est placé devant, autour de l’oeil de celui qui regarde. Ils invitent le lecteur à prendre conscience de ce qui influence sa vision. Le roman exhibe son armature et ses divers seuils, laissant soin à celui qui lit de poursuivre ou non sa lecture, de revenir en arrière et de faire les liens entre les différentes zones de texte. Le roman expose son mode de fabrication, soulignant qu’il est le produit d’un réagencement de textes antérieurs. Cette armature visible est autant faite de pleins que de vides et reflète la tension entre l’ambition de tout dire, tout contenir et la reconnaissance de la difficulté même de raconter. Le jeu avec les espaces blancs, la ponctuation et les indications phonétiques renforcent la dimension écrite du texte tout en essayant de de le faire sortir hors de la page et de résister à toute clôture
The early novels of John Dos Passos are part of the modernist literary movement. They are characterized by an original organization of the words on the page. The text is no longer a monolithic block, but is divided into sections and its separations are highlighted by a vast paratext. It also contains a variety of collages presented in various styles and in different fonts. These observations are the starting point of this research, which focuses on the materiality of the text in the early novels of John Dos Passos, Manhattan Transfer and the trilogy USA, published between 1925 and 1938. These novels question the gaze of the reader on the text, showing what is placed in front of and around the eye of the observer. The reader becomes aware of what influences his vision. The novel displays its internal structure and various thresholds, allowing the reader to continue or to stop reading, to go backwards and to create connections between the different sections of the text. The novel displays how it has been constructed, highlighting that it is the product of the rearrangement of previous texts. This visible internal structure is also built out of gaps and empty spaces. It reflects the tension between the ambition to be exhaustive, to contain everything and to acknowledge the difficulty to tell a story. The interplay with the blank space on the page, the use of punctuation and phonetic indicators reinforce the written aspect of the text, while at the same time making the words stand off the page and resistant to closure

A discussão que permeia o tema da justiça em escala mundial é um debate filosófico por excelência. Assim, na presente dissertação Justiça como Equidade para a Sociedade dos Povos, temos por objetivo abordar a possibilidade de ampliação da justiça equitativa do nível nacional, como apresentada na obra Uma Teoria da Justiça (1971), para o nível internacional, como procurou fazer Rawls em O Direito dos Povos (1999). Trata-se de uma análise qualitativa de caráter exploratório, desenvolvida na modalidade de avaliação, cujo escopo será a demonstração da estrutura da justiça equânime em âmbito interno e a verificação das viabilidades da teoria no âmbito global. O trabalho se organiza em capítulos que lidam especificamente com a análise e problematização sobre a teoria da justiça, sua concepção filosófico-política, desenvolvimento, fundamentações teóricas e alcançe real. Nessa perspectiva buscaremos fixar o ponto de atenção na proposta rawlsiana da justiça equitativa para a sociedade dos povos, observaremos o estágio atual de evolução da teoria e as repercussões frente às correntes filosóficas contemporâneas, para só então, considerar como pensar a justiça como equidade nos dias atuais

Esta tese procura compreender de que modo a elaboração modernista da colagem e da montagem no romance Manhattan Transfer, de John Dos Passos, expressa e ilumina processos sociais e políticos de seu tempo. Publicada em 1925, essa obra é a primeira a investigar as transformações pelas quais passava Nova York, desde a virada do século XX até o início dos anos 1920, por meio de uma experimentação formal então única na literatura dos Estados Unidos. Além disso, defende-se a especificidade do romance de 1925, o qual não seria apenas uma preparação para a trilogia U.S.A. (1930-1936), mas configuraria um retrato singular do espírito de sua época. A sua forma se revelaria, então, não ruptura, mas continuidade do projeto realista de interpretação da sociedade. Propõe-se igualmente desenvolver uma discussão sobre a complexa interação entre modernismo e cultura periférica no começo dos anos 1920, com base em certa tradição da crítica literária brasileira (da qual os grandes nomes são Antonio Candido e Roberto Schwarz) atenta às relações contraditórias entre o processo de modernização e a forma literária. Nesse sentido, busca-se entender de que maneira a cultura dessa ex-colônia refletiu, pela obra de Dos Passos, sobre a sua própria condição periférica no período em que os Estados Unidos cresciam como potência econômica e militar. Por fim, procura-se mostrar como Manhattan Transfer foi capaz de formular literariamente e tornar visíveis os nexos na época, nada evidentes entre a urbanização de Nova York, a industrialização, a guerra e as novas tendências imperialistas que começavam a despontar.
This thesis looks at how the modernist use of collage and montage in John Dos Passos Manhattan Transfer expresses and sheds light upon the social and political processes of its time. Published in 1925, the book is the first to investigate the transformations undergoing New York from the turn of the 20th Century to the beginning of the 1920s by means of a formal experimentation hitherto unique in the literature of the United States. Moreover, this thesis argues for the specificity of the 1925 novel, which should not simply be understood as groundwork for the U.S.A trilogy (1930-1926), but rather as a singular depiction of the spirit of its time. Its form, accordingly, would prove to be not a break, but rather an unfolding of the realist project of interpretation of society. The complex interaction between modernism and peripheral culture in the early 1920s is likewise addressed here through a discussion based on a certain tradition of Brazilian literary criticism (featuring, among its major authors, Antonio Candido and Roberto Schwarz) particularly attentive to the contradictory relations between the process of modernization and the shifts in literary form. In this regard, the analysis carried out seeks to grasp in what way the culture of this former colony reflected, though the work of Dos Passos, on its own peripheral condition during the period marked by the rise of the United States as an economic and military power. Lastly, this thesis aims to show how Manhattan Transfer was able to formulate literarily and render visible the links far from evident, at the time connecting the urbanization of New York, the process of industrialization and the new imperialist tendencies that were beginning to emerge.

La majeure partie de l'œuvre de Dos Passos s'inscrit dans ce que Philippe Lejeune a appelé un "espace autobiographique", aussi complexe que multiforme. L'écriture autobiographique de Dos Passos se module à l'infini, passant d'un registre à l'autre, d'un thème à l'autre, tout en ignorant superbement les lois d'un genre d'autant plus apte, en dernier ressort, à traduire ses variations et ses glissements qu'il demeure indéfinissable. C’est sans doute la raison pour laquelle, bien qu'il se soit réclamé de tout autre objectif, Dos Passos s'est forgé, peut-être à son insu, une "écriture du je" dont il convient désormais de repérer les figures et d'explorer les modalités. Qu’à l'instar de la plupart des autobiographes il ait douté de son projet, ne l'a pas empêché de le réaliser, en ayant recours à des stratégies de mise en œuvre textuelle, tour à tour naïves et retorses. C’est, en définitive, ce mélange de duplicité et de candeur qui le rend si attachant et si fascinant. Ce faisant, il sacrifie sur l'autel de ce que Sacvan Bercovitch a appelé "le rituel de l'autobiographie américaine", axé sur une célébration de l'individualisme en tant que valeur nationale. Il ne fait aucun doute que Dos Passos s'est voulu essentiellement le champion des libertés individuelles, telles qu'elles avaient été définies à l'origine par les "Pères pèlerins". . .
The major part of Dos Passos' work constitutes what Lejeune has defined as "an autobiographical complex". His autobiographical writing undergoes an endless process of change, passing from one register to the next, from one theme to another, while superbly ignoring the laws of a genre all the more apt, in the last analysis, to translate its variations as it resists all attempts at definition. That's probably why, though he claimed to have objectives of quite a different order, Dos Passos forged, maybe unawares, an ego-oriented language whose figures and modalities deserve our attention. His mistrust of the validity of his project, shared by a majority of autobiographers, did not prevent him from carrying it out through textual strategies which appear to be alternately artless and devious. This dissertation discusses the books of John Steinbeck published in the thirties, willing to comprehend the way that the dialogue between the author's literature and his dialectic relation with the historical reality in which he wrote and lived. The analysis of Steinbeck's writings produced during the thirties made possible the discussion about the effects of the 1929 crisis and the empowerment of monopolist capitalism, processes that became very evident in this period. The conflicts present in that reality molded the historical reading of the writer and of the social group that he centrally portrayed throughout his literary production, the small farmers. Steinbeck's deep connection with the old middle classes conditioned his literature and his worldview, since the writer was raised into that way of life and educated into the typical values of that social group. This made his literature, during the thirties, unfold itself in many different ways in order to deal with the experience of the destruction of that way of life in all of its complexity. As the crisis deepened, Steinbeck faced different expressions of it, being the proletarianization of the small farmers and the destruction of the basis of their world some of the most bruising aspects that his literature intended to expose, portray and denounce. Sometimes assuming nostalgic outlines to celebrate the past, sometimes drawing on the satire to question the bourgeois ethos, sometimes rising through the denounce to reveal the scars created by the economic transformations, Steinbeck did not duck the problems placed by the development of the American capitalism. Based on this, his literature has became not only an interpretation of the reality created by the Great Depression through its mechanisms, dynamics and structures, but also the literary testimony of a person who observed the decadence of the way of life in which he grew up and of his peers. In this sense, the dissertation aimed to situate and comprehend Steinbeck's writings in their historical concreteness, that is, in the terms in which they were conceived and produced, in such a way that it became possible to observe several dimensions of the crisis and of Steinbeck's historical reading related to this experience, marked by loss, by misery and by the transformation of the small farmers into agricultural workers
Essa dissertação discute as obras da década de 30 de John Steinbeck procurando compreender de que maneira se deu o diálogo entre a literatura do autor e a relação dialética desse com a realidade história na qual viveu e escreveu. A análise dos escritos de Steinbeck produzidos nos anos 30 possibilitou a discussão sobre os desdobramentos e efeitos da crise de 1929 e do fortalecimento do capitalismo monopolista, processos esses que se tornaram muito evidentes nesse período. A conflituosidade presente naquela realidade moldou a leitura histórica do escritor e do grupo social que ele centralmente retratou ao longo de sua produção literária, os pequenos proprietários agrícolas. A profunda ligação de Steinbeck com as antigas classes médias rurais condicionou sua literatura e sua visão de mundo, uma vez que o escritor foi criado em meio àquele modo de vida e educado dentro dos valores típicos desse grupo social. Isso fez com que sua literatura, ao longo dos anos 30, se desdobrasse de diferentes formas para lidar com a experiência da destruição daquele modo de vida em toda a sua complexidade. Na medida em que a crise se aprofundava, Steinbeck travou contato com diferentes expressões dela, sendo a proletarização dos pequenos proprietários e a destruição das bases de seu mundo alguns dos aspectos mais contundentes que sua literatura procurou desvelar, retratar e denunciar. Ora assumindo contornos nostálgicos para celebrar o passado, ora valendo-se da sátira para questionar o ethos burguês, ora erguendo-se por meio da denúncia para trazer à lume as mazelas geradas pelas transformações econômicas, Steinbeck não se furtou aos problemas postos pelo desenvolvimento histórico do capitalismo estadunidense. A partir disso, sua literatura se tornou não só uma interpretação da realidade criada pela Grande Depressão a partir de seus mecanismos, suas dinâmicas e suas estruturas, mas também o testemunho literário de um sujeito que observou a decadência do modo de vida no qual cresceu e dos sujeitos que eram seus pares. Nesse sentido, a dissertação buscou situar e compreender os escritos de John Steinbeck em sua concretude histórica, isto é, nos termos em que eles foram concebidos e produzidos, ao passo que tornou-se possível observar várias dimensões da crise e da leitura histórica de Steinbeck em relação a essa experiência, marcada pela perda, pela miséria e pela transformação dos pequenos proprietários rurais em trabalhadores agrícolas

This thesis re-assesses what we know of John Dee within a context of what I have termed ‘polytemporality’. This approach questions Dee’s relationship to periodising conventions and to the historiographical recuperation of identity following perceived temporal ruptures (such as the Reformation). It challenges the standard notion of Dee as the archetypal ‘Renaissance conjurer’ by bringing to the forefront Dee’s own assessment of the ‘past, present and hereafter’ of his reputation. It argues that Dee’s multiple identities are instead reflective of a polytemporal reflexivity that is heightened by a conflict between his intellectual hubris and personal insecurity. Dee emerges as a figure poised uncomfortably in and outside of his society’s conceptions of temporality, influenced by the past and self-consciously aware of the future. The temporal fracturing prompted by the Reformation and the ensuing struggle to re-establish a British historiography of continuity and succession is reflected in the instability and impermanence of Dee’s own changing identities. Dee’s concern for his posthumous reputation juxtaposes the self-assuredness of his intellectual self-image, providing glimpses of the man behind the magus. In this thesis Dee is ‘revisited, repeated [...] reinterpreted, and reshuffled’ (Latour, We Have Never Been Modern, 75), and emerges as a man before, between, and behind his times: a polytemporal Dee.

Poynter was, because of the multiplicity of his functions and gifts, an infleuntial member in the artistic field during the second half of the nineteenth century. Putting the emphasis on the part played by tradition, a good education and a natural bent towards arts, his precepts are made obvious in the pictures he painted thankd to the fine mingling of both his intellectual exactness and his bright imagination, and thay come to a masterpiece such as concieved by the italian masters of the quattrocento. In other respects, he develops the idea of functionalism in the beauty of objects and underlines that the latter does not exist as such but is shaped thanks to the combined efforts of the body and the mind. The rapid progress in the technological field since 1960 has caused international communities to demand more accountability from the teaching profession. In an effort to comply with these demands, the educational authorities have implemented various renewal strategies. It was realised, however, that the teachers are the most important renewal agents. Renewal in teaching can only be successfully conducted if teacher training keeps up to date with developments in the technological and managerial science fields. The initial and basic training of a teacher is not sufficient to enable him/her to teach effectively for thirty or more years. Consequently, in-service education and training were devised to enable teachers to teach more effectively, towards more effective learning. The aim of this study was to determine whether the in-service training of teachers would benefit from the appointment of a tutor teacher at every school. The most important responsibility of this tutor teacher would then be to: • organize practical teaching at school level to assist student teachers professionally; • assist beginner teachers towards social and professional orientation; • co-ordinate internal and external in-service training programmes. A literature study of the teaching systems of the USA, England, the Netherlands and the RSA in connection with teacher training was undertaken. Special attention was given to the training of students during practical teaching, the orientation of beginner teachers and the use of in-service training programmes. From a comparison between the South African system and the overseas systems mentioned above, it became clear that a system of internship is used in some American states as well as in England. The term 'internship' refers to a compulsory practical teaching period: the teacher is appointed temporarily in a paid teaching post. The condition is that he complies with certain certification requirements, before being appointed permanently. This system of internship does not exist in South Africa. In the school based in-service training programmes of the three overseas teaching systems that were studied, two teaching posts could be clearly distinguished: • the collaborating teacher, i.e. the teacher in whose classroom the student teacher is placed for practical teaching. This collaborating teacher is trained in the technique of identifying and developing teaching competencies in students' teaching methods; • the tutor teacher, a senior experienced school based teacher, assigned to in-service education and training. His assignment comprises of the organization of practical teaching, the in-service training of the collaborating teacher and co-ordination of all in-service training activities. It was found that the non-existence of the post for a tutor teacher caused in-service teacher training in South Africa to be lacking in professionalism. The teaching profession does not have the privilege to participate in the professional training of its members to a great extent. Collaborating teachers are expected to train student teachers, whilst being unequipped for the task. From the study and findings the author conclude that every school should have a tutor teacher to manage the important function of school based in-service teacher training. The implementation of the post of tutor teacher at schools to train the collaborating teacher properly, and to organize other in-service training activities, will greatly improve the effectiveness of our educational system.

'n Moontlike oplossing vir hierdie probleem is die vertikale integrasie-sisteem gerugsteun deur 'n lewensvatbare franchise in die kleinhandelsektor. Die studie fokus op die lewensvatbaarheid van 'n slaghuisfranchise. Daar moet egter ook bepaal word of 'n slaghuis wei gefranchise kan word, voordat die lewensvatbaarheid van 'n slaghuisfranchise bepaal kan word. Die doelwitte van die studie word bereik deur 'n . literatuurstudie wat fokus op franchising en die rooivleisindustrie, sowel as 'n empiriese studie. Die literatuurstudie omvat die omvang van franchising in Suid-Afrika, die definisie van franchising, die verskillende franchisemodelle, die verskillende vorme van franchising, die voor-en nadele ten opsigte van franchising, die vemaamste franchise-suksesfaktore, die moontlikheid om 'n slaghuis te franchise, die beperkings op franchising van 'n slaghuis, die geskiedenis en omvang van die rooivleisindustrie, die produksie-en verskaffingsnetwerk, die verbruik, die spandering, die kleinhandelsektor en lewensvatbaarheid van 'n ondememing wat n6d saamgelees moet word met die evaluasie van 'n nuwe onderneming of geleentheid. Die empiriese studie fokus op 100 verbruikers en 10 slaghuiseienaars of -bestuurders in die Klerksdorp en Potchefstroom omgewing. Die deelnemende partye is telefonies genader I met die onderskeie vraelyste. Die gevolgtrekking bepaal dat 'n slaghuis wei gefranchise kan word, en dat hierdie spesifieke slaghuisfranchise lewensvatbaar is. Die studie eindig met aanbevelings wat gevolg moet word indien die slaghuisfranchise ontwikkel word. Daar is egter heelwat beperkings in hierdie studie wat die weg baan vir verdere studie.
• SUMMARY: The South African red meat industry is widespread and where decision-making is slow. One of the reasons is that the meat industry has attracted many role-players that have now given result to the industry having unnecessary high prices. One possible solution to streamline the industry could be to vertically integrate the industry, backed by feasible franchising of butcheries. The main objective of the study was to determine if a butchery franchise will be feasible in South African markets. Literature on franchising in South Africa, the definition of franchising, the different franchise models available, the different forms of franchising, the critical success factors of franchising, the positive and negative aspects of franchising, the scope and history of the South African meat industry, the distribution networks and suppliers in the industry, the consumption of red meat and all the critical aspects in regard to feasibility and evaluating a new opportunity, were dealt with in this study. The survey method applied was that the respondents were contacted telephonically with the two different questionnaires used to gather the required data. The first was meant for the consumers and the second for the butchery owners or managers. The populations that were identified were 100 consumers and 10 butchery owners or managers in the Potchefstroom and Klerksdorp areas. The purpose of the questionnaires was to determine the scope of the market, the various consumer perceptions and determining the feasibility of franchising butcheries. Firstly, it was determined that a butchery can be franchised, and secondly, that the butchery franchise is feasible. After the findings were discussed, recommendations were made that will be helpful when a butchery franchise is outlined. However, the study was not without considerable restrictions, paving the way for fruitful further study in the possibilities of franchising in the red meat industry in South Africa.

The four novels - The Floating Opera, The End of the Road, White Noise, and Vineland - are representative of the cultural shift away from traditional moral concepts after World War II. Popular culture has increasingly become the guiding force for the continuation of American society, and in Don DeLillo�s White Noise, popular culture and its creation of myth (according to the author�s representation of America) has become embedded in the system and life of contemporary America. John Barth�s novel The End of the Road and its predecessor The Floating Opera are important in any discussion of the role of popular culture and popular mythology in post-war America. They both appear to signal an end to sincere intellectual thought or debate, and the notion of imposing a rational moral world upon the social landscape surrounding the individual. The Floating Opera explores the common tendency of society to avoid difficult intellectual struggles, and the central character and first-person narrator ultimately realises that questions about the nature of existence are of no objective value. In The End of the Road the character Jacob Horner adopts a superficial reflection of pre-existing rules and social conventions. Together these novels reflect much of what is at present understood as the postmodern aesthetic, and are indicative of many of the changes in America that were about to occur. The Floating Opera was published in 1956 and The End of the Road was published in 1958, but they are still highly relevant beyond the period in which they were written. White Noise (1984) portrays a system founded on the Hollywood mythology, and the superficial reflection of pre-existing rules and social conventions found in The End of the Road. The novel revolves around the experiences of the narrator, Jack Gladney, a university lecturer who teaches Hitler studies at Blacksmith College, and his wife Babette. The course which he teaches on Hitler is influenced by Hollywood myth, and the novel portrays a consumer-based society that has lost much of the firm moral basis which traditional religious concepts formerly supplied. The role of television, Hollywood, and the idea of simulation are all explored throughout the novel and are important forces in any examination of post-war American society. Finally, in Vineland (1990) the social upheavals which occurred during the late �60s and early �70s are explored from the perspective of the 1980s. The novel refers to a vast array of images and icons from popular culture, and the brief youth rebellion, in the late �60s, which failed to inspire any final social revolution. The result of this failed social revolution is a landscape of popular culture in modern America, where Godzilla leaves footprints in Japan and popular mythology from television or pulp novels coincides with everyday life. There are references in typical Pynchonesque fashion to those who must necessarily be orchestrating these social and cultural alterations, but they, as specific individuals, remain anonymous or hidden from the scope of the author (although, as in White Noise, there are deliberate references to the CIA and other agencies or departments within the U.S. Federal Government). Vineland is important, therefore, both as an account of the social changes which occurred in America between the late �60s and �80s, and the increasing role of popular culture in America. These four novels form the basis of an exploration of the role of popular mythology and popular culture in post-war America. They form a clear progression, and allow a detailed analysis of the social and cultural changes which contemporary America has undergone since the end of World War II.
