Texto completoMorand, Anna-Livia. "Édition critique, traduction et commentaire des Romana de Jordanès". Thesis, Université de Lorraine, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LORR0314.
Texto completoIn 551 AD, Jordanès, a christian author of gothic origin, wrote two books in latin : the De origine actibusque Getarum and the De summa temporum uel origine actibusque gentis Romanorum, which are also respectively called Getica and Romana. The first one of these texts drove attention because of the originality of its subject, the history of the gothic people, but the second one remained widely overlooked, if not despised. The Romana were only seen as a patchwork of already kown texts and Jordanes was supposed to have written it poorly, given that he’s presenting himself as an « agrammatus ».Therefore the goal of this thesis is to question these prejudices by proposing a new critical edition, a translation and a commentary of the Romana. The previous editors of Jordanes’ textes had biases, negatives (Mommsen 1882) or positives (Giunta & Grillone 1992 et Grillone 2017) about our author’s competences. And their editions were more a reflection of these biases that of Jordanes’original writting. We tried on the contrary to suspend our judgment as long as possible on the quality of the Romana et to let the manuscripts guide us so we can deliver a text which teaches us more about Jordanes.Furthermore, the Romana’s commentary reveals the interest of studying it. It is not caracterized by its literary qualities, but it is a good case study to see how history was made in the 6th century, which also gives a insight on of the lost Historia Romana of Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus. Lastly Jordanes shows us how Eastern Romans may have seen the empire and its history at their time. Indeed, besides the existent christian tone in the Romana, Jordanes leaves above all the impression of an helpless man facing his empire falling apart

Texto completoThe recent and widespread awareness on the challenges of teaching foreign language and culture has favoured the diffusion of intercultural finalities of those teachings. Such an observation is also applicable to the problem confronting the teaching of french language and culture in Jordan where the traditionnal civilisation perspective is still in force. Moreover, the important distance between french and jordanian cultural systems leads to the emergence and the consolidation of stereotyped cultural representations. The teaching of french culture in Jordan is therefore caracterised by the coming together of two conceptions of social behaviours corresponding to different readings of the world. The intercultural approach in the teaching of languages and cultures puts the teaching of the target culture within the context of the otherness and the linking of individuals with specific identities determined by their membership of a specific cultural community. Taking target and original cultures’ representations into consideration becomes a focal point of education on perception of otherness. The teacher is therefore saddled with the role of a mediator among the different actors during the didactic contract. Our research aims at bringing to the fore the content and the sources of jordanian students representations on the french culture as well as their own culture. Some of our findings could be used for the conception of french culture teaching programmes in an alloglotte environment

Texto completoThis study is in line with researches on academic mobility, precisely on student’s migration. In fact, it can be noted that, in spite of the big number of foreign students in France (except European programs), studies on personal experiences and life pathes of these students are still very few. Being based on qualitative data (comprehensive interviews carried out with Jordanian students having passed between five and seven years in France), this research aims at studying in depth the direction of migratory course and stranger’s experience as will as its impact on identity constructions, representations and attitudes. Conceiving the fieldwork as starting point of theorization, our study is focused on the protagonist’s own speech on which study’s object is gradually built. The methodological approach combines analysis of contents and discursive analysis in order to give an account of thematic recurrences, emerging significant categories in speech as well as multiplicity and subjectivity of personal experiences and perspectives. At the end, this work would lead to highlight the principal components of this particular social phenomenon, which is the experience of studying for long years in an environment linguistically, culturally and socially different. Interviews and their analysis would interestingly shed the light on return prospects strategies of reintegration in home society, mutation of social link due to staying abroad, transfer of linguistic competences, social and intercultural knowledge’s and on the synthesis of values in both the society of reception and the milieu of origin

Texto completoSquatter settlements in Amman are at the center of a permanent negociation between the authorities and the squatters. The upgrating projects concerning the squatter settlements, supported by the World Bank, fostered the improvement of living conditions and the accumulation of inhabitants' capacity for negociation. Nevertheless, the full squatters' integration to the city it's not considered any longer to be necessary in the "post-fordist" world ; the tolerance didn't go so far as to legalize the squatter settlements, except for the interventions of the 80's. The systematic violation of the planning rules, as it appears in informal housing, hides an intial stage of the indomitable conflict which fulfills, according to Carl Schmitt, the "criterion of politics". The management of informal housing, through the key words of "development", "community participation" and "developpement", expresses a "neutralisation" of its political aspects

If the establishment of an energy accounting is relatively easy on the national scale, it is not so on a city scale. The datas and informations are very rare. So, datas collecting and adapting by different calculation and valuation methods constituted our main effort, which resulted in an approximate energy balance of amman. Texto completoThe theme of this thesis deals with aspects of the management of potable water in Amman by the French multinational Suez-Environnement since 1999. This contract Tells within the framework of structural adjustment programs negotiated by Jordan with the World Bank and the IMF in 1988. The thesis is based on articulating the dynamics at play in Jordanian context, marked by water déficit, socio-spatial diversity, public policy set by a highly centralised Jordanian state, and an imported management model. How has the private management been adapted to the Jordanian context and how has this mode) manifested the modes of the social and institutional organisation? We will question the particulars of the potable water crisis in Amman and the economic and political implication of the introducing a private operator. We will also ask about the types of interaction between the différent actors in this public-private partnership. The introduction of private operators in Jordan bring into question the system of resources distribution, the functioning of public services based on subsides and clientelism, and also the perception of the population of a very important urban service

Texto completoAs a taboo subject that has not been researched enough in the Criminal Law field, crime of honour in the Middle East and in Arab world continues to feed international press headlines and to raise up differences in views between Eastern and Western jurisdictions. Often described as inhuman or as a practice from another age, the phenomenon of honour killings appears among the crimes that attract the most public attention. In Jordan - where family honour is considered as the cornerstone of social balance - studies showed that one of four crimes is a crime of honour. Any threat to this social balance would be a sign of decadence to be punished in order to restore the original balance. The circumstances of honour murders are among elements that generate either conviction or indulgence from public and justice. The delicate legislature position to face up honour crime cases deserves cultural and historical clarifications and an accurate review of international resolutions and recommendations towards Jordan jurisdiction

Texto completoIf the urban spatialisation of contemporary socio-economic realities raises questions on the concept and the very purpose of public space, its application in another cultural area, i. E. The Arab world, or to be more precise, the Middle East, raises just as many questions. What truths does public space conceal in a city such as Amman, the recent capital of a new country with artificial borders, and what is the role of public space in the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in general, in constructing national Jordanian identity at a time when hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees have arrived, adding to the previous waves of migrants? Used for many years to legitimise the government in power and to support the construction of the new nation-state, public space in Amman, the mould of urbanisation and of the sense of belonging, is now confronted with dynamics on the smallest scale: metropolization and globalisation, phenomena that concern the form and the essence of public space, disrupting the current bonding of Amman society as a result and destabilising the fragile consensus around the common standards and values on which Jordanian identity has more or less relied upon until now

Texto completoThe study of the frech press for the years 1970-1971 often shows a confined vision of the jordanian-palestinian conflict : King Husayn, représentative of a monarchy allied to the West, is viewed throughmajor thematics which still remain. The political system itself apparently rely on the Hashemite monarch whereas ministers did play a key role. Finally the army enable the study of the bedouin constituent of the society and the one of of the major archetypal figures whether it's a matter of the arabian-muslin values or the references regarding the mythical Arab Legion. The study of the Palestinians sers out the question of identity which has been tackled by comparing with other nations. Then comes the question of militant organizations framework Furthermore it's through the repercussions of the urban guerilla tactics and the plane hijackings that the palestinian conflict found itself defined by the journalists. As for the civilians in the majority of both sides, they were rarely taken into account even through they were the main victims of the fighing, from the label of civil war or fraticide applied to the conflict. "Black September" shows the persistency of the radings frame remaining today from the moment one's study a conflict which specificities are the opposition between "progressives" and "reactionaries" a characteristic for seventies

Texto completoThe focus of this research is the image of France as a country, its people, and the French language teaching and learning among Jordanian students in public and private schools. The influences of this image on the language studies and the process of teaching and learning are significant. This study was centered on French language learning process in Jordanian schools. The researcher was interested in this field of study because it is almost virgin filed and was not yet explored properly. In order to collect the necessary data for this research, detailed and extensive field study was conducted using four different methods for the data collection, these methods are: questionnaire, use of drawings, associated words and semi-structured interviews (individual and collective). Six hundred and fifty five French language students aged between twelve and sixteen years old from five different public and private schools have participated in this field study. The results of this research clearly show that, the image of France, French people and French language is positive and stable, despite the few occasions when the image was stereotyped, antagonistic and generalized. The research also shows that there is a very close relationship between foreign language representation and learning motivation. Finally, this research study shows the importance of understanding the image of learners towards the country and its people and towards the language itself, as well, the importance of correcting, rebuilding and replacing the bad images misrepresentation. Moreover, the study supports the necessity of adopting an education with an international approach, especially with globalization and diversity of information resources

Texto completoFrom the outset, taking into consideration the political significance of demographic behaviour (migration patterns, marriage, family structures and fertility) and of population policies, we investigate how "demography is part of power strategies of groups or influences States' policies". Exodus from Palestine in 1948 and 1967, labour migration to the Gulf States after 1973 have been instrumentalised by the Hashemite regime, in order to promote the Arab identity of Jordan, as well as to set up a rentier State and economy. Structures of power distribution are thus produced, ine the State-society, as well as gender and intergenerational relationships. The Gulf War upset this micro and macropolitical balance. From the 1990's onwards, the emergence of fertility control policies signals an attempt to replace migratory revenue by international aid for development. Also, the emergence of new migration patterns allows for controlling the effects of social change and lack of political participation

Texto completoThis dissertation examines the trajectories, or the culmination of strategies and actions that protest groups take toward achieving their intended goals during the Arab Spring in Jordan. I focus on three protest groups in the kingdom during this time period: The Free Assembly, the Liberation National Social Group, and Sadaqa. I specifically look at how each groups’ resources, regime links, framing, and assessment of political opportunity shaped its trajectory. Based on over nine months of fieldwork as well as participant observation within one of the three protest groups from 2011-2013, I find that the groups vary in their trajectories within the same authoritarian context. While I find that the regional events related to the Arab Spring explain why all three groups formed or mobilized at the time they did, I find this regional factor only partially explains the trajectories of these groups. Rather, the trajectories of protest groups in Jordan are also embedded and tied to local circumstances, namely: local socioeconomic class hierarchies, tensions between urban and local populations, and the contentious history of Palestinian-Jordanians in the country. These local circumstances are critical in shaping how the groups mobilized their resources, framed their agendas, and interacted with the regime in ways that allowed them to gain public support.

Texto completoUntil the beginning of the peace process, Bedouin identity, tribal values and allegiances have been used by the king and the palace elites - including those ones of Palestinian origin - both to counteract Israeli denials of a "national identity" on the east bank, and as an instrument to prevent the subversion of an established order shaken by the rise of Arab socialism or the PLO in the past, or by islamic fundamentalism more recently. However, the Bedouin tribes are far from controlling the state system: during the past decades they have been economically and politically marginalized. Largely dependent on the state, today the Bedouin are much less privileged than the stereotypes on Jordan make scholars believe. By focusing on the Huwaytat, the most important Bedouin tribe of Southern Jordan, the thesis presents the historical ties that have linked the Bedouins to the Hashemites, analyses the process of state-building and its impact on the tribes. After having described the territorial formation of the Hashemite kingdom during the mandate period, through the delimitation of boundaries, the definition of tribes'nationality and the strategies of control over them, the study analyses the development programmes in the steppes, the process of nomads'settlement and the marginalisation of the pastoral economy. The study of the electoral laws from 1929 to 1986 and the parliamentary elections of 1989 in the southern Bedouin constituency allow for focusing on political competition at the local and at the national level, as well as on the process of tribal elites reproduction
