Bat IPM
Bats, order Chiroptera, have traditionally been maligned and misunderstood by the general public. Bats are, however, important components of the natural and urban landscape; they provide valuable pest control of public health and nuisance insects, and they serve an important role in the pollination of several of Arizona's native columnar cacti. In urban environments, particularly schools, bats are of concern due to their ability to vector the rabies virus. Consequently, the status of bats of bats in schools has become that of a pest. Integrated pest management (IPM) methods have traditionally been reserved for managing arthropods; however, the fundamental principles of urban IPM may be just as easily applied to mammals with equal success. The ecologically sensitive aspects of IPM make this a highly preferred approach in managing bats as an organism of considerable conservation concern.

Resumen
The presence of bats inside church buildings can result in negative impacts, requests for advice and disagreements about what management approaches are appropriate. Despite the suspected importance of churches for bats, there has been little research focusing on the ecology and behaviour of bats in church buildings, and current gaps in knowledge sometimes restricts the quality of advice that can be given. This study makes use of several approaches (examination of existing records, a regional field survey, temperature and acoustic monitoring and radio-tracking) to improve understanding of the ecology of bats roosting in churches, with a focus on Pipistrellus pygmaeus (which can cause some of the most severe problems) in eastern England. The study focused on this region because it had the highest number of requests for advice about bats from church representatives in England. Inside churches, roof or ceiling crevices in the south sides of churches were preferentially selected as roost sites, and were also warmer than equivalent crevices in the north sides of churches. Roost crevices were characterised by fluctuating temperatures which warmed dramatically during the day and cooled at night, whereas church interior temperatures were stable. Within the highly modified, fragmented arable landscapes of eastern England, a modelling approach showed that P. pygmaeus selects church roosts with more wetland habitat cover within typical commuting distance, and which are closer to broad-leaved woodland, than churches in general. Radio-tagged female P. pygmaeus typically select wetland and woodland habitats for foraging, with arable land consistently the least selected, but most available habitat. I found substantial differences among colonies in home range and commuting distances, with bats from one colony commuting up to 15.9 km to reach foraging resources. Mobility may be important for the persistence of P. pygmaeus in fragmented landscapes by allowing bats to exploit multiple distant and dispersed foraging patches. Radio-tracked P. pygmaeus bats from three colonies collectively made use of multiple alternative day roosts in a range of structures across large areas, but bats at two colonies mostly day roosted in their respective church roosts. Using automatic, continuous acoustic monitoring, I found that P. pygmaeus bats were present and active inside three medieval churches throughout the year, with activity peaking in July. P. pygmaeus activity inside churches was positively correlated with night-time temperatures and negatively correlated with wind speed. Recommendations for conservation management are made along with possible future directions for applied research.

Human development continues to use up more physical space in the natural world, threatening the natural habitats of many organisms. To combat the loss of biodiversity science needs to explore what landscape features are important for different organisms so that we can incorporate these into the modern environment. As bats play an important role in many ecosystems and can reflect changes through trophic levels, analyzing their preferred habitats can help planners improve biological diversity of the urban habitat. Using acoustically identified bat sightings from Artportalen.se for the years 2017-2018, this paper studied the habitats of bats in Sweden. Through multiple regression analysis we examine the response in abundance and/or diversity of bats to physical and socio-cultural attributes of the urban habitat. We examined a total of 10160 bats from 18 species in 418 land cover locales and 306 demographical statistical areas with varying degrees of urbanization. Our results indicate that bat abundance and diversity decrease significantly with higher urbanization while deciduous forests are the most important land cover type for all bats. The results also indicate that wealthier areas have less abundance and diversity even when factoring in population density. Species specific analysis suggested that bat species who are better adapted at foraging in open vegetated landscapes and over water were less susceptible to the negative impacts of the urban habitat. We conclude that diverse habitats with a mixture of open vegetated areas, watercourses and broadleaf forests are the most important land features for a diverse bat fauna along with high connectivity via tree cover and linear landscape elements. If urban planning could incorporate these features into the urban habitat, some of the negative impacts of urbanization could be prevented.

Resumen
Land-use and land cover changes impact the distribution of landscape features in rangelands and wildlife use of the landscape. To balance the requirements of wildlife groups that respond differently to landscape features, managers need more information on how these species use rangelands. Here, we investigate bat use of rangelands. We investigated the associations between bat activity and landscape features using acoustic monitoring and generalized linear mixed effect models. Trees and open water were positively associated with bat activity. We also investigated bat use of rangeland tree patches using a hierarchical modelling framework to build generalized linear models that included landscape, patch, and local level variables. Bats selected contiguous patches with low basal area. These studies show the importance of riparian forests for rangeland bats, and guide management of these areas. This data will aid managers in conserving rangeland bats and balancing their habitat requirements with those of other rangeland wildlife.

Resumen
Study of a Leisler's bat maternity roost in Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland, 1997- 2000 used the marking of individual female bats with PIT (Passive Identification Transponder) tags with infrared filming of bat movements at the roost entrance. This provided data for analysis of bat activity through the maternity season, without interference to the bats. PIT -marked bats were analysed into four activity categories. Evening exits and morning entrances to the roost showed an abrupt change in pattern at 8th June 1999. Flight patterns before and after s" June showed significant changes. Lengths of flight of one- and two-part flights per night were not significantly different. Principle component analysis showed a significant relationship of emergence time to solar radiation at 21 OOh GMT. Patterns of activity in the tunnel to exit, and following entry, were monitored and analysed. Survival rate estimates, Phi, for 1997 to 2000 varied from 0.61 to 0.77. Significant differences in body measurements between female adult and female juvenile bats were demonstrated. The profound changes in behaviour of the bats to sunset and sunrise respectively were also consistent with a risk avoidance strategy in the heavily pregnant females that may be prone to aerial predation risk. The large changes in roost composition while total numbers of bats using the roost remained almost unchanged highlights the problems of attempting to resolve roost phenology by visual roost counting such as the maximal visual roost count on any one night. Analysis of the sequence of emergence and individual consistency in timing of emergence in pregnancy and lactation strongly suggested that this sample of bats did not co-ordinate their behaviour in any way.

Resumen
Gene flow is a central evolutionary force that largely determines the level of differentiation among populations of organisms and thus their potential for divergence from each other. Identifying key factors that influence gene flow among populations or closely related taxa can thus provide valuable insights into how new species arise and are maintained. I undertook a comparative study of the factors that have shaped range-wide intraspecific differentiation in four related and broadly co-distributed Taiwanese bat species of the genera Murina and Kerivoula. Bats were sampled from sites across Taiwan and sequenced at two mitochondrial genes as well as genotyped at newly developed and/or existing multi-locus microsatellite markers. To improve phylogeographic inference of existing patterns of population genetic structure, I undertook spatial distribution modeling of the focal species at both the present time and at the Last Glacial Maximum. Genetic data were analysed using traditional and new methods, including Bayesian clustering, coalescent-based estimation of gene flow, and haplotype network reconstruction. My findings revealed contrasting signatures of population subdivision and demographic expansion that appear in part to reflect differences in the altitudinal ranges of the focal taxa. Mitochondrial analyses also revealed a putative sister relationship between two of the Taiwanese endemic taxa - M. gracilis and M. recondita, which - given the fact both are restricted to Taiwan - presents an unusual case of potential non-allopatric divergence. To dissect this divergence process in more detail, I used 454-Pyrosequencing to obtain ten nuclear loci sequences of these two taxa, and a third taxon from mainland Asia, M. eleryi. Based on these loci, Bayesian isolation-migration models provided no strong evidence of post-split gene flow and, therefore, did not support speciation within Taiwan. Instead, the divergence process reconstructed from ncDNA loci was found to be incompatible with the mtDNA tree, with M. recondita showing a sister relationship with M. eleryi. This conflict is best explained by the ancient introgression of mtDNA between the two insular species following their colonization of Taiwan at different times.

Lee, Danny V. "Dynamic Characterization of Aluminum Softball Bats". PDXScholar, 2001. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/1727.

Texto completo
Resumen
On January 1, 2000, the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) imposed maximum bat performance limitations on commercial softball bats. The ASA adopted a testing standard defined by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) to determine the bat performance factor (BPF), a normalized coefficient of restitution that must be less than 1.2 for the bat to be eligible for ASA sanctioned events. The ASTM standard requires that the softball strike the bat, which is free to rotate in the horizontal plane, at 26.8 mfs ± 0.3 mfs (88 ftfs ± 1 ftfs) with little or no spin. The central project goal was to develop the ASTM test apparatus, which consisted of a precision ball launcher, a pivoting stage for the bat, and instrumentation for velocity measurements. The key feature of the testing apparatus developed in this project was the ability to measure the rebound velocity of the ball directly-ASTM method derives the ball rebound velocity by assuming the bat behaves as a rigid body and applying conservation of angular momentum. Tests revealed a discrepancy in the BPF between the ASTM method and an alternative method,. termed the direct method, which uses the direct measurement of the ball rebound velocity. Furthermore, the ASTM method proved to be very sensitive to parameter errors, demonstrated by magnification factors between 2.0 and 3.0. The direct method was insensitive to parameter variation with magnification factors between o and 1.0. The ball rebound velocity discrepancy was also analyzed with mechanism simulation software. A three-degree-of-freedom model of the bat was used to test the effects of elasticity and pivot friction. The analysis determined that applying conservation of angular momentum on an elastic body caused transient errors in the derivation of the ball rebound velocity; and pivot friction significantly affected the motion of the bat and thus, the derived ball rebound velocity. The experimental results show that the direct method was more accurate than the ASTM method in calculating the BPF; and the conclusion of the analytical model shows that the ASTM method can be corrected by precisely identifying external moments in the system.

Lord, Jennifer Suzanne. "Micro and macroparasites of bats (Chiroptera)". Thesis, University of Salford, 2010. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/9737/.

Texto completo
Resumen
Bats (Chiroptera) are one of the most successful and diverse of mammalian orders, with an estimated 1100 species worldwide. Due to protected species legislation, studies that focus upon bat endoparasites are limited. As such, many fundamental questions concerning bat-parasite relationships remain unanswered, including evolutionary aspects of such associations, hostparasite interactions and factors that may influence the composition of bat parasite communities. To further knowledge of bat parasitology, one hundred bats, that had either died of natural causes, or had been euthanized due to severity of injury, were acquired across Greater Manchester and Lancashire between September 2005 and September 2008. Molecular typing methods confirmed 93 specimens to be common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), six to be soprano pipistrelle (P. pygmaeus) and one to be a whiskered bat (Myotis mystacinus). Development of PCR-based methodologies, coupled when possible with morphological analyses, confirmed the presence of the following microparasites (prevalence data in parenthesis): Babesia vesperuginis (23%), Trypanosoma spp (36%), Bartonella sp. (2%) and Eimeria sp. (20%), and the following macroparasites: Lecithodendrium linstowi (80.4%), Lecithodendrium spathulatum (19.6%), Prosthodendrium sp. (35.3%), Plagiorchis koreanus (29.4%) and Pycnoporus heteroporus (9.8%). Potential factors affecting the parasite community composition including host sex and age, season, year, geographic location and parasite co-infection are explored. The detection of Eimeria sp. would appear to be the first record of coccidia in British bats, and also the first global record of Eimeria sp. from the common pipistrelle. Phylogenetic analysis of bat-associated Bartonella sp. ITS region, clusters the isolate in a well supported clade with B. grahamii, B. elizabethae and B. queenslandensis, all known to infect rodents, in addition to B. grahamii and B. elizabethae being recognised human pathogens. The first molecular sequence data for L. spathulatum is presented, and sequence data for Prosthodendrium specimens is also novel; both are incorporated into a phylogenetic analysis of the Lecithodendriidae, which questions the current taxonomic status of Prosthodendrium. Lastly, in an attempt to assist the evolutionary study of haemosporidian parasites, ectoparasitic bat flies were collected in the field from Puerto Rican bats and additional samples were acquired from Germany. Dissection and cytochrome b-specific PCR analysis of DNA extracted from insect digestive tract tissue confirmed the presence of haemosporidian DNA within two of the German samples. Phylogenetic analysis of the order Haemosporidia, incorporating the novel cytochrome b gene sequence derived from these German samples, showed the latter to cluster strongly with samples isolated from Madagascan bats and illustrates likely host-switching between birds and mammals.

Marine ecosystems are under a wide range of natural or anthropogenic forcings. In response to these forcings, marine organisms rely notably on their phenotypic plasticity to preserve their fitness. In this thesis, I am particularly interested in the behavioural plasticity of juvenile European sea bass in response to two environmental stressors, food deprivation and exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the consequences of these disturbances through an integrative approach that assesses direct effects at the individual level, but also possible indirect impacts at the population and community levels. The behavioural tests implemented allowed the evaluation of three behavioural traits : sociability, risk-taking and exploration. From an analytical point of view, a principal component analysis was applied in order to objectify the identification of behaviours and their interpretation. Experimental results show that fasting reduces sociability and that exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons can lead to alterations in the anti-predator response. These results suggest adverse effects on the fitness of individuals with possible repercussions on ecological dynamics through altered intra- (gregarious) and inter-specific (predator/prey) relationships. This research illustrates how behavioural regulations can link the effects of environmental disturbances to multiple levels of organization, from the individual to the ecosystem

This thesis is the first scholarly analysis of the artistic legacy of Georges Rouault (1871 – 1958), which was donated almost in its entirety to the French State in 1963. In 1964, just a year after the donation had been made by the artist’s heirs, this group of works was celebrated as a “révélation de l’atelier” in an exhibition at the Louvre, but no detailed analysis was subsequently undertaken. Today the 891 sketches, studies and unfinished works are among the largest and most interesting collections held by the Centre Pompidou. By considering the significance of the artist’s working process, the present study not only meets the explicit concerns of the donors but also takes account of the special character of this group of works. This unique collection – both as a whole and through the individual works – provides a wealth of information about hitherto unexplained key aspects of Rouault’s working process: from the ubiquitous phenomenon of the ‘inachevé’ to the fundamental interrelationship between the work of the painter and that of the printmaker and to explicitly style-shaping poietic strategies. The latter provides the key to understanding Rouault’s narrow canon of forms, the remarkable haptic materiality of his works and the constant dualism of the elements of colour and drawing in his distinctive style of “cloisonnisme”. At the same time, the work process of this artist, who has often been described as a solitary figure in classical modernism, also exemplifies – in a sometimes uncompromisingly radical manner – certain characteristics of the art of an entire period.

Day, Julie. "The impacts of street lighting on bats". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/32763.

Texto completo
Resumen
As human population grows and develops, more urban areas are expanding. Urbanisation has many impacts on the natural environment and one understudied pollutant is artificial light at night. The aims of this thesis were to examine the impacts of street lighting on bats and investigate the exposure of British bat species to artificial light at night and explored the mitigation option of part-night lighting. The current exposure of British bat species to artificial lighting was assessed using roost locations and population sizes from a long-term dataset (1997-2012) from the Bat Conservation Trust’s National Bat Monitoring Programme on seven bat species (Eptesicus serotinus, Myotis nattereri, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, P. pygmaeus, Plecotus auritus, Rhinolophus hipposideros and R. ferrumequinum). These data were combined with satellite imagery in roost sustenance zones and home ranges. Bat roosts were found in areas with brighter light levels than random locations for P. pipistrellus, P. pygmaeus and Plecotus auritus. Species that forage around streetlights (P. pipistrellus and P. pygmaeus) had significantly higher light levels in the landscape around their roosts than species which avoid street lit areas (R. hipposideros, M. nattereri and P. auritus). Colony size was negatively correlated with light levels. This study highlights that different species have different requirements in the landscapes around their roosts. To investigate landscapes effects of artificial light at night on the understudied light avoiding species R. ferrumequinum, eight maternity roosts were surveyed to explore the interaction between habitat features and street lighting. At each maternity roost, bat detectors were deployed at 25 paired street lit and dark locations. Street lighting had a significant negative effect on bat activity. Locations closest to the maternity roost had higher bat activity than those further away and road type had a significant effect on bat activity, with the highest bat activity recorded at minor roads compared with A and B roads. These results highlight the large negative impact street lighting can have on bat activity patterns and the need for mitigation. Several mitigation strategies have been suggested to combat the effects of artificial light at night but few have been tested. One of these suggestions is to restrict the hours of lighting through the night, often called part-night lighting. Part-night lighting has been implemented by many local authorities, often switching the lights off after midnight and switching them back on before dusk. To explore the effects of part night lighting on bats, the hourly patterns of activity for R. ferrumequinum were studied. Bat activity was bimodal, with a peak in the first few hours after sunset followed by a smaller peak before sunrise. To capture more than 50% of bat activity during the dark period of the night, street lights would be required to switch off before 11pm. To explore this further, a before-and-after study of part-night lighting was conducted at towns across Devon. Following the conversion from full-night lighting to part-night lighting, switching street lights off at 2 am, there was a significant reduction in P. pipistrellus and a significant increase for P. pygmaeus and Nyctalus noctule activity. Although part-night lighting is not often operational during peak activity periods for bat species, reducing the duration of lighting at night has impacts on activity patterns for several species. This thesis shows that artificial light at night has impacts on bats across the landscapes around their roosts. Artificial lighting has impacts for species in different ways, depending on whether they forage around street lights or avoid street lit areas. For species that avoid street lit areas such as R. ferrumequinum, street lighting can have very significant negative impacts on the availability of areas around their roosts. This highlights the need for conservation measures to reduce impacts of artificial lighting. Although mitigation schemes such as part-night lighting may help to minimize impacts of nighttime lighting, more tailored schemes for bats should devised to achieve greater conservation impacts.

Resumen
Land-use change is a leading cause of biodiversity loss and ecosystem service degradation worldwide, but these changes do not affect all organisms equally. Understanding the factors that influence resistance to environmental change is vital for informed conservation. In particular, dietary generalists may withstand environmental change better than specialists due to their ability to exploit variable resources. Bats are voracious predators of insects, but vary widely in their degree of dietary specialization. In Chapter 1, I analyze the effect of land cover and morphology on dietary diversity and the two most common prey items (Lepidoptera and Coleoptera) of bats, selecting important independent variables using phylogenetic generalized least squares (PGLS) and model selection. Dietary diversity increased with increasing amount of cropland near the study area, consumption of Lepidoptera decreased with increasing habitat diversity, and consumption of Coleoptera decreased with increasing distance from the equator. Biodiversity (and hence, prey diversity) is expected to decrease with agricultural intensity, but the observed pattern suggests that dietary specialists may avoid agricultural habitats due to lack of preferred prey. Dietary specialists may thus be increasingly at risk as agricultural intensity increases around the world, and it is essential that we continue to document their ecological roles and the services they provide to society

Resumen
The physiological ecology of bats and turtles was investigated. A Doppler-radar unit was developed to non-invasively record the ventilation rate of unhindered free-hanging microchiropteran bats. The technique was then used to examine the arrhythmic breathing pattern of torpid pipistrelle bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus). At ambient temperatures ranging from -1 to 14 oC arrhythmic breathing was most marked at colder temperatures. Active breathing could only supply a small proportion of the total O2 uptake, suggesting that during apnea the glottis remained open allowing a significant diffusive influx of O2. Radars were used to monitor the winter activity of a captive colony of brown long-eared bats ( Plecotus auritus). During winter these bats were found to emerge from their hibernaculum with a high daily probability (0.4 to 0.9), and upon emergence they tended to feed first and then drink. A model was developed to predict the optimum clutch size of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Due to their high energy expenditure whilst on land, it was predicted that turtles should lay clutches that are as large as possible. Hence clutch size should be constrained by the egg carrying capacity of the individual, and so it was predicted that larger individuals should lay larger clutches. This was found in a population of loggerheads in Greece. Clutch volume was found to be independent of the inter-nesting interval between successive nests laid by the same individual, and was found to decrease as the nesting season progressed due to a reduction in egg size with successive clutches. Nest site selection by nesting loggerhead turtles was studied. Sand temperature was found to play no part in nest site selection. However, nests were not deposited at random, but tended to be laid away from the sea close to vegetation that backed the beach. This pattern of nest placement was found to maximise hatchling survival. The emergence pattern of hatchling loggerhead turtles was monitored using a portable radar. Most hatchlings emerged at night, and hatchlings came out of all nests on more than one night (maximum 11 nights). Evidence suggested that the rate of cooling of the deep sand (≥ 15cm) was a factor initiating emergence. When the sand cooled faster in the evening, the hatchlings emerged earlier. The remigration pattern of adult sea turtles to a nesting beach over several years showed that individuals varied in their tendency to return in subsequent years. Evidence supported the hypothesis that the lower tendency of turtles seen nesting less than twice to return in subsequent years was due to them nesting on other beaches. A single female turtle was tracked by satellite for 58 days during the nesting season. The transmitter was attached after the turtle had been observed nesting. The satellite data revealed that the turtle subsequently made only localised movements and nested 3 more times, although never returning to the original nesting beach. Finally a method was developed to rigorously quantify the probability of identifying a nesting event by a turtle by satellite tracking, using field data combined with prediction software to calculate the time of satellite overpasses.

A maternity colony of the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) was observed from 21 May 1992 to 12 October 1992. The colony consisted of approximately 110 females at the beginning of the study, and about 180 bats following birth of the young. Bats were observed at emergence to gather data on factors affecting initial emergence: light intensity, temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, cloud cover, and moon phase. Light intensity and cloud cover apparently are the factors most affecting the variation between initial emergence and sunset.

Resumen
The loss of natural vegetation remnants and homogenization of agricultural landscapes have detrimental effects on bat occurrence. As bats are efficient pest controllers, it is important to understand the mechanisms underlying their persistence in agricultural landscapes. By comparing structural features of increasing complexity (open fields, single trees, tree lines and woodlands), we investigated the patterns of bat species richness, flight and feeding activities; and the potential effect of prey availability on these patterns. Open fields were significantly less bat rich and had lower levels of flight and feeding activities than treed features, which were differently used by distinct bat guilds. These differences were not driven by prey availability, which was similar across structural feature complexity. We conclude that the occurrence of different structural elements within agricultural landscapes provide a variety of commuting and feeding habitats for bat species with different requirements, reinforcing the importance of landscape heterogeneity to bat occurrence and species richness in agricultural landscapes; PRESERVAR ÁRVORES PARA CONSERVAR MORCEGOS: ESTRUTURAS COM ÁRVORES COMO HABITATS DE ALIMENTAÇÃO CHAVE PARA MORCEGOS INSECTÍVOROS EM ÁREAS DE AGRICULTURA INTENSIVA.
