Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how journalist’s professional identity has changed because of the large changes of the media industry due to new technology. We also want to increase the understanding of how organizations can support their employees in identity work in connection to organizational changes that may impact the professional identity. Methodology: We have conducted a case study that investigates journalist’s professional identity with an abductive approach. The empirical data was collected using interviews. Conclusion: The study shows that journalists have a distinct professional identity based on journalistic ideals and values such as ethics and neutrality. It was also found that due to new technology the work role as journalists has changed and consequently the professional identity has also partly changed. We can see that regardless of which industry that is facing large changes due new technology, organizations need to understand how the professional identity can be impacted.

Resumen
Mainstream press tends to give visibility to immigrants only when problems arise. Through this visibility based on problems a virtual social identity is constructed and given to the immigration population. This identity is built on stereotypes and is not necessarily correct. However, the neighbourhood press of Barcelona, inscribed within the Catalan regional press’ own idea of journalism, offers a different approach to this issue due to its history, proximity and commitment to the region, and hence, the different characteristics of these journalists’ field where different capitals are sought and taken into consideration and different habitus are found. Therefore this press constructs and gives a different virtual social identity by using a differentiated set of frames. Through studying this mechanism the process through which this particular sort of press, and specifically its journalists, approach the idea of journalism was unearthed and its journalistic field explained.

Title: From inspectors to guides: how citizen journalism and participatory culture affect the professional identity of Swedish journalists (Swedish title: Från granskare till guide: om medborgarjournalistikens och deltagarkulturens påverkan på svenska journalisters professionella identitet). Number of pages: 44 (48 including enclosures). Authors: Towe Bengtsson and Matilda Källén. Tutor: Amelie Hössjer. Course: Media and Communication Studies C. Period: Fall 2011. University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Informatics and Media, Uppsala University. Purpose/Aim: The goal of this paper was to answer how citizen journalism and participatory journalism as well as an increasing range of information today have affected the professional identity and professional lives of journalists. In addition to this, study how journalists today respond to these changes. Material/Method: The study is based on Deuze’s theories about journalistic ideals, Jenkins’ theories about convergence culture, and on theories about professionalization and de-professionalization based on Nygren, Wiik and Torstendahl’s theories. The study is based on eight interviews with professional journalists, four employed journalists and four freelance journalists. The results are analysed based on a broad theoretical framework. Main results: The results of this survey show that the role of the professional journalist is extremely complex, with a strong ideological basis that fundamentally influences the journalist's view of the profession and of him- or herself. The survey shows that the journalist role is changing and how important the identification as a journalist still is. Furthermore, the survey shows that the role is being redefined. The role consists of two levels, an ideological level and a more practical level. The survey shows how these two levels are in harmony, but also on a collision course, and how journalists seek to clarify their ideology to distinguish themselves from others, but also how they actually adapt the ideals on a more practical level. In summary, despite a de-professionalization of the profession, the journalists keep the journalistic ideals very high, although they constantly redefine their role, as well as the ideals. They see their role as an aid to guide the readers, rather than a traditional journalist, although they still cling to a traditional perception of the ideal journalist.

Journalism is one of many institutions dealing with transgressions at a societal level. This dissertation is partly about how it has come to occupy that position, but foremost about how practicing that mission constructs and defines journalism as a social institution and constructs identity, legitimacy and power. The object of study is one of the most high-profile programs of investigative television journalism in Sweden, Uppdrag granskning (Mission Investigate), which is analyzed as an instrumental case study.A quantitative content analysis of all 1,034 of Uppdrag granskning’s episodes broadcast between 2001-2014 shows that the public sector is more investigated than the private, and that Vård och omsorg (social care), Ordningsmakt (society monitoring power) and Handel och industri (trade and industry) are the most frequently investigated fields. Whereas the fields of Media (media), Kultur (culture) and Genus (gender) are fields investigated to a minor degree. Politicians and other public officials are more often the objects of investigation than other professional groups. A narrative analysis of five episodes shows how investigations construct journalism’s institutional identity, and reproduce and legitimize journalistic power when presented in the form of a legal narrative. The dissertation also features results of an interview study with five of Uppdrag granskning’s journalists. They give their own perspectives and reflections about investigative journalism and power. The results of the qualitative analysis show how the examined episodes of Uppdrag granskning construct journalism as an institution that: (1) identifies what is wrong in society, and who is responsible, (2) acts as a constructor and guardian of societal moral, (3) interacts in an intricate way with the formal legal system, investigating it, collaborating with it andsometimes stepping in where it fails, (4) exercises a form of justice that is mainly retributive towards those investigated, serves to restitute victims and by means of an emotional focus endeavors to engage and activate viewers’ sense of justice, (5) justifies means of deception and deceit to expose wrongdoing, (6) faces the creative challenge of shouldering the journalistic mission to investigate in a just and fair way, while at the same time making sure the investigations are dramatic and interesting enough to be worth watching on prime time television.

Over the past three decades, the industrial and editorial strategies of French press groups pushed the journalistic labour markets to adapt to new requirements. Faced with these changes, the traditional positions of the actors involved in the journalistic field were deeply challenged leading to a reconfiguration in terms of standards and socio-discursive practices, but also in terms of the distribution of roles and powers. Our research focuses on the case of the French “pigistes” journalists who are located in a "grey area" of the labour market and thereby become privileged "analyzers" of the ongoing changes in the French press industry. The precariousness assigned to them is examined as a relational notion, which allows us to approach very closely the "breakdown-restructuring" movement of the modern French journalistic field. The study of the uses of this notion in the discourses of the main actors in this field brings light on the social logics at work. It underlines what is at stake in the stigmatization of “pigistes” journalists in "precarious" professionals on the one hand and which strategies this stigma help to satisfy on the other hand. It appears that this representation implies a differentiation between two types of journalists (the precarious ones and the others), which singularly makes sense in a socio-economic restructuring of cultural industries. Revealing a tension between legitimacy and modernization of a changing press, the precariousness assigned to the “pigistes” journalists supports the adaptation strategies of the actors involved in the field. Above all, this stigmatization serves firstly this stigmatized journalists who by conducting a “reversal of the stigma” seize the opportunity to bring forth a “para-journalistic” identity based on a culture they would own: the “pigisme.”

Our research investigated in which way newspaperâs journalists identity is influenced by the use of new media on their jobs at the newsroom. For this, we evaluated how the use of smartphone as work tools triggered conflicts and tensions among reporters from DiÃrio do Nordeste who started questioning their own identity as newspaperâs journalists. The choice of DiÃrio as the object of this analysis can be explained by the fact that the newspaper Ââ the second in circulation in the northeast of Brazil â is one of the first in the local scenario to implement journalistic convergence strategies. We adopted as the delimitation of the research the case study of what DiÃrio do Nordeste identifies as multimedia practice. Using data collection techniques, as the empirical observation and depth interviews, was possible to comprehend how the production of multimedia content generated the construction of a whole new habitus at DiÃrioâs newsroom, marked by the development of journalistâs new cognitive competences. We also investigated how the transformations descendant from multimediatic production influenced the relation of force and power in the newsroom. Starting from the hypothesis that the journalists which defines themselves as multimedia are in dominance, we initiated the analysis of conflicts and tensions established on the daily routine of these professionals. From theorical point of view, we discussed identity concept, modernity consequences, we also did a communication theories revision and of its relations with discussion about the presence of technology in contemporaneity and yet reflected about mediatic and journalistic convergence, using the ideas from authors like Henry Jenkins (2008), SalaverrÃa e Negredo (2008), Esther Applegren (2005) and Rosely Fragoso (2006). In the end, we presented how DiÃrio do Nordesteâs journalists define themselves, if as newspapers journalists or multimedia ones and reflected about the new professional shape designed on labour market, marked by the knowledge, practice and paginal functions and on-line journalism related functions convergence.

Resumen
Journalism plays a central role in the liberal democratic society and it enables the citizens to make informed decisions. In a local community it also holds many social functions such as creating a common local identity and a geographical belonging. This study investigates different aspects of local journalistic output such as news outlets, news topics, democratic value dimensions, framing, original reporting and sourcing. The output includes all types of published material from legacy media organizations. The method has been to make a quantitative content analysis of all the journalistic output produced in seven randomly picked days between July 1 of 2014 and June 30 of 2015 in three different municipalities - Malå, Tranemo and Sandviken. They are all manufacturing municipalities and represents one small, one medium sized and one large community within this type. The result of the analysis shows that a majority of the news items is produced by the local newspapers. They are the key stone media in these municipalities and without the newspapers there is a low number of local news produced by public service media. Sports is the biggest news topic in total but it is especially Sandviken who has the highest ratio of sports news. The democratic values of reporting on societal actors who disagree, decision-making authorities, policy plans and actors concerned are not commonly used. The framing of the news is mostly individual and episodical but that can be explained through the high ratio of sports news. In the more democratically relevant news about politics, economy and social issues, the framing is mostly public and thematic. A large proportion of the news is produced by original reporting with a byline. Letters to the editor is also a common type of content. When it comes to sourcing one third of the news content is not mentioning any sources at all. Sourcing is mostly common in the sports news. The study finally discusses how the local journalistic output seems to relate to democratic functions and social identity. Future studies of more municipalities or qualitative studies of citizen views or journalistic working methods would be ways of creating a deeper understanding of the state of local journalism.

Resumen
The thesis examines the American career of William Duane (1760-1835) in the light of his earlier, and much less studied period in Ireland, England and India. It is the study of the development of one of America’s pre-eminent newspaper editors. Although Duane is not a first-tier figure of the Early Republican period such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson or Alexander Hamilton, he certainly fits comfortably within the second-tier with men such as James Thomson Callender, Tench Coxe, John Binns and William Cobbett. He is an important figure within the historiography on the Early Republican period which has come out in recent years. He has an important role in three recent and seminal works on the period by Durey, Wilson and Pasley: Transatlantic Radicals, United Irishmen, United States and “The Tyranny of Printers”. This is a study of the identity of Duane measured against his political change and shifting sense of self. It seeks to answer the question: Who was William Duane? The thesis probes the question in depth by looking at Duane’s origins and then tracing his life in 1790s Philadelphia. The portrayal of Duane found in the recent historiography and in the first academic biography of Duane, Kim T. Phillips’ William Duane: A Radical Journalist in the Age of Jefferson, lets Duane’s version of self rest too easily, without interrogating how he constructed his identity within an American political context for an American reading audience. For example, although Duane constructed himself as a citizen of the United States by birth, the thesis maintains that he was not an U.S. citizen at all but was born in Newfoundland and was by eighteenth-century definitions a British subject. The thesis offers a great deal more detailed archival research within the above framework. First, it develops Duane’s familial relationships in his early life in much more detail than before. I have uncovered more details on his life from numerous sources, particularly letters, and a careful, textual search for any information on Duane’s earlier career in Ireland and England in the 1780s which has been overlooked by previous researchers. The thesis then places this material in the context of the newspaper trade in 1780s Clonmel and London while building a narrative analysis of this period before moving on to India. Second, this thesis demonstrates Duane’s links to the East India Company army. The importance of Duane’s Indian career also lies in his being part of a wider chronology of deported editors and government suppression of the press within the period from 1780 to 1799. The place of Duane within an ignored history of radical migrations to India is also dealt with as is his emergence as a pro revolutionary editor in Calcutta after the declaration of war in 1793. Third, the thesis uncovers a great deal more archival information on the period of Duane’s membership of the London Corresponding Society and his editorship of the Telegraph – a strongly pro-French newspaper in wartime London. This period was a short but crucial one for Duane as he witnessed first-hand the last real throes of a British revolutionary movement and the enactment of two important bills which sought to smother the L.C.S. and the other plebeian radical groups. Fourth, the thesis examines Duane’s role in what has been perceived as a crucial turning point in American history – the election of Thomas Jefferson to the presidency in 1800. The thesis seeks to understand what Duane’s impact on American politics was and how his earlier career shaped his political outlook and his actions in America. It seeks to denativise the Early Republican Period by pointing out outside currents that Duane used in defining what Americanness was as opposed to his conceptualisation of Federalism and Britain. Finally, the thesis argues that the story of William Duane is one of an eighteenthcentury editor’s transoceanic search for a home.

Thesis (MPhil (General Linguistics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
This study examined how different words and phrases used within the media may portray a certain image of an individual, ultimately impacting the perception that the reader forms of such individual. Specifically, the manner in which Fred van der Vyver was portrayed by both an Afrikaans language newspaper and an English language newspaper in the Fred van der Vyver-Inge Lotz murder case was examined. This was a highly publicized case from March 2005, when Inge Lotz was found murdered, to November 2007, when Fred van der Vyver, who was suspected of killing Inge Lotz, was acquitted. The aim of the study was to compare two South African journalistic cultures, namely the ones represented by Cape Times and Die Burger, respectively, in their construction of Fred van der Vyver as newsmaker. The rationale for the study was that newspaper coverage of a murder as well as of the investigation and trial which follow creates a certain perception among its readers, and that this perception is based on the information that readers accumulate by reading various published articles. The hypothesis was that both newspapers treated Fred van der Vyver as a newsmaker, and as a murdered in particular, by making use of various linguistic devices. The data analyzed were a selection of articles published between March 2005 and November 2007 in the online versions of Cape Times and Die Burger. A focal point of the study was to show how different aspects of newspaper reporting – specifically headlines and the text itself – construct a particular view or image of the case in general and of Fred van der Vyver in particular. It was found that neither the Cape Times nor Die Burger wrote that Fred van der Vyver was the murderer but both suggested it throughout by making use of linguistic devices. Loaded words, for example, were used to describe certain aspects of the case, and these aspects were then associated with Fred van der Vyver. Fred van der Vyver`s identity had been presented as that of a murderer within the press by means of linguistic tools and language use. The hypotheses was therefore borne out by the data, as both newspapers had indeed portrayed the identity of Fred van der Vyver as that of a murderer. What we read in the papers does have an influence on what we perceive to be true, objective or accurate and on how we ultimately form an opinion. In this case, the public automatically accepted Fred van der Vyver’s identity as portrayed in the press, namely as that of a murderer, and assumed that he was guilty once he was arrested.

Resumen
Informed by the political economy framework and the public service role of media in democracy, the main objective of the study was to use in-depth semi-structured interviews to understand news-workers’ professional journalistic identities in relation to their status as government employees and the understanding of their public service role as outlined in the paper’s mission statement. The main interest was to understand the complexity of negotiating these role identities. Through reference to the theories of journalism professionalism, the study highlighted the extent to which news-workers in the small newsroom of Lentsoe la Basotho/Lesotho Today see themselves as public service journalists in a democratic country. The interest was borne partly out of the views of the paper’s critics who see it as not serving the public but rather promoting the activities and policies of the government of the day, thus falling short of its democratic role. The contention of the study was that as a public service newspaper, the paper should have news-workers who do impartial journalism and reflect the public’s right to know in their reporting. The findings of the study suggests that news-workers at Lentsoe la Basotho/Lesotho Today continuously have to strive to negotiate the potential conflict between being a professional and working for a government-controlled newspaper. While they sometimes lay claim to being journalists, the reality is that in their political coverage they end up adopting the role of government mouthpieces.

By utilizing Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) methodology, this study explores the ideological function of language in the Kurdish journalistic discourse of the pre-WWI period (1898-1914). Informed by the CDA approach, the present study perceives language as a social practice that produces meanings and presumes a dialectical relationship between language and ideology in the construction of social realities, beliefs and identities. Hence, this study is situated within the wider scope of discourse analysis that focuses on the link between identity, discourse, power and ideology. The study particularly utilizes, in an eclectic manner, the CDA conceptual frameworks developed by Norman Fairclough and Ruth Wodak in order to examine and explain the ideological function of the Kurdish journalistic discourse in the formation of Kurdish national identity from the prespective of a linguistically informed discursive study. To this end, from the perspective of CDA approach, the study methodically and analytically conducts an exhaustive close textual examination of numerous discourse samples taken from the corpora of three Kurdish journals of the late Ottoman period, i.e., Kurdistan (1898-1902), Kürd Teavün ve Terakki Gazetesi (The Kurdish Gazette for Mutual Aid and Progress) (1908-1909) and Rojî Kurd (Kurdish Sun) (1913). Given that the historical circumstance have a tremendous effect on the formation of discourses, this study investigates discourse practices and language devices employed in the Kurdish journals by taking into consideration the distinctive sociocultural and political conditions in which each journal was published. The study concludes that contrary to the common misperception in the literature, the Kurdish press of the late Ottoman period served as a platform on which Kurdish intellectuals negotiated, constructed and disseminated a distinctive form of Kurdish national identity and nationalism in their discourse despite –sometimes at the expense of- the hegemonic Ottoman and Pan-Islamic identities. However, although the Kurdish journalistic discourse managed to produce a Kurdish nationalist discourse among the Kurdish intellectuals and a small segment of Kurdish reading public, it failed to imitate the Andersonian notion of ‘imagined communities’ as the ‘cultural products’ of ‘print-capitalism’ that would immensely contributed to the formation of a unified field of communication around a national print-language. As a result the Kurdish identity discourse remained inconsequential in terms of making an impact among a larger Kurdish public that would ultimately lead to the construction of a braoder imagined Kurdish national community. The present study attributes the limited power and influence of the Kurdish journals or the Kurdish printing-press on Kurdish masses to the unfavourable historical circumstances, including the novelty of the newspaper genre, the low literacy rate in Kurdistan, the state-imposed restrictions on the production and dissemination of the journals, the personal and familial concerns and interests of the Kurdish leadership of the period and the lingering effects of both parochial (tribal, linguistic, sectarian, regional) and meta-loyalties (Islamism, Ottomanism) among Kurds in the era of nationalism.

Resumen
This study problematizes the fact that media is part of creating the reality of which the society relies on. More specific it focuses on former chief of police Göran Lindberg and medias reports about him before he was arrested for sexual asult, versus after. The purpose of the study was to see how identity is constructed in news media, and also how that affect the public perception of sex offenders. It also makes a comparison between a daily newspaper and a tabloid newspaper. To answer the questions of this study semiotics and narrative analysis was used. These methods were combined with theories about journalistic writing such as framing and media logic put together with theories about story-telling. These theories and methods were chosen for their accuracy and suitability on the subject. News articles about the former chief of police Göran Lindberg was selected and divided into three sections based on time periods relevant to the events. After that the selection was narrowed down to include three articles from each period and each newspaper. These articles were analysed to see how news media uses story-telling to form identity with the tools provided by the selected theories and methods. In conclusion this study shows that media construct the identity of Göran Lindberg in a similar way of how characters are constructed in fictional stories. This contributes to a reproduction of a general perception that the most occurring sexual offender is some kind of monstrous outsider and not in fact the common man, when, at the same time, research show that most sexual abusers are known to their victim.

The present work is structured by two main perspectives: the French-German comparison and the construction of the professional identity of national daily press journalists. The construction of professional identity is analyzed taking into account the conjunction of interactions between the journalist as individual, the organization in which he is employed, the professional group to which he belongs and his social environment, with consideration of the cultural background of each country in which these interactions take place. Before conducting this analysis on a basis of approximately thirty semi-structured interviews that have been conducted with print and online journalists, we first took a closer look on the approaches developed by researchers in France and Germany. In order to limit the object of this research, the comparison has been restricted to the following specializations: politics, society and culture. The coexistence of the print edition and the newspaper’s website defies the professional identity of journalists and has an impact on the self-perception and the perception of each other of print and online journalists. In this context, differences between print and online journalists appear which lead to transnational similarities between the journalists of each support (print or web), even if all journalists are united by common references linked to ancient ideals of the journalists’ profession.Despite these strong similarities, the construction of the professional identity is influenced by the national context: especially the impact of the differences in each country’s administration can be observed on different levels, for example in the structure of the media landscape and the news organizations and their departments as well as in the journalists’ training and their professional mobility

Resumen
This qualitative study features in-depth interviews with selected continental African journalists and offers exploratory insights into how they perceive themselves in terms of their journalistic roles and/or sub-identities with regard to the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). The study also examines correlations between their perceptions and their news stories on NEPAD. Grounded in the libertarian and social responsibility theories of journalism, and reading these theories from the standpoint of Africa, this study posits the neutral, watchdog, social agenda and development journalism sub-identities to explain the respondents’ journalistic identifications. Hence, the study explores how the journalists respond to NEPAD’s (pan)-Africanist and development journalism interpellations. The study draws on postcolonial theoretical perspectives to address questions concerning African identity and the wider NEPAD/African context of research. Findings indicated that the journalists perceive a role for themselves as neutral-objectivist information disseminators as well as social agenda enactors that conscientise their readers about NEPAD. Thus, the journalists tend to implicitly portray a pluralistic understanding of their roles that enables them to balance the ideals of journalism against the development and Africanist aspirations of NEPAD. Although the journalists were found to uphold oppositional stances towards NEPAD, they do not question it from outside of its own neo-liberal discourse. In fact, they still represent themselves as aspiring to its Africanism and remaining sympathetic to its development plans. Overall, they exhibit multiple identifications, and yet they often tend to lean towards their neutral-objectivist journalistic sub-identity. Ultimately, they prioritise the dominant libertarian-professional model of journalism over and above NEPAD’s interpellations. The study also examined the journalists’ interpretations of what they do and the apparent translation of this into their stories. Although in both their stories and interviews discourse they showed a broader orientation towards libertarianism, the findings show that the link between the two is not straightforward.

Resumen
Kamratposten is a swedish magazine aimed at youth aged 8-14. They write about almost everything that concerns youth, all the way from dealing with loneliness to animals and celebrities. This study concentrates at how they write about love. With a qualitiative narrative analysis of the 12 articles that concerns love from the 2013 issues of Kamratposten, I have tried to answer the questions: - What narratives about love are being constructed in Kamratposten 2013? - How do they construct males, females and gender in their articles about love? What I found was that the hetero normativity, or the heterosexual matrix as Judith Butler calls it, was very strong in the articles. Only 1 out of 12 articles concerned homosexual love and none mentioned other sexual orientations. There is also a strong division with girls and boys, whom are often separated through their relationships as lovers or friends. A girl friend is not the same as a boy friend. This is a narrative about what Yvonne Hirdman (2001) calls the first rule of manliness: A man is not a woman. (s. 48) Besides from that, the gender roles constructed in Kamratposten is not very traditional nor stereotypical, with boys being sensitive and lost and girls being active and experts. On one hand, Kamratposten’s stories about love constructs a traditional picture about love and boys and girls, with heterosexual relationships as the norm, and on the other hand they are telling a story about norm breaking gender roles.

The aim of this bachelor thesis was to examine how Swedish tabloids portrayed Sweden’s greatest female boxers Mikaela Laurén and Klara Svensson the time before and the time after their great meeting at Hovet the 10th of September. We examined the following questions: Which gender roles are given to Sweden’s greatest female boxers Mikaela Laurén and Klara Svensson in Swedish tabloids and how is the interplay between media and the figures in the text described in the Swedish tabloids?   We used narrative analysis to investigate 14 texts from Aftonbladet and Expressen which were related to the match at Hovet. We found that the two boxers were portrayed differently. Laurén was portrayed as the bad girl who had to fight hard to get to where she is. She is tough and she is the one that comes with mean comments and gives media the real intrigues and she likes to use props. She believes she has a greater purpose, to get female boxing acknowledged on the media agenda. Svensson is portrayed as the good girl, she is more girly and is portrayed as if she seems to think that she is a better person than Laurén and therefore pity her when Laurén creates drama in the media. Svensson tries to convince the media that she is a tough girl but is still portrayed as more girly. Both Laurén and Svensson were also portrayed with their roles outside of boxing, as girlfriends which is common for female athletes. The meeting seems to be perfect for both the media and the boxers team. The meeting is portrayed as the final battle between good and evil.

Resumen
This research takes three local newsrooms in London in the years 2011-2013 as the setting within which to explore and examine the nature of journalistic identity in a changing economic, technological and cultural environment. It identifies elements of this shared culture, using a combination of non- participant observation and interviews. A newsroom culture emerges which is collaborative and supportive for journalists operating within it, but also fundamentally cautious and conservative and reluctant to ask core questions about how its newspapers operate, who its readers really are, how to attract new readers and how to engage with others outside mainstream local journalism who have entered the arena of local news and comment. In other words, local newspaper journalists are in some ways their own worst enemy.

Resumen
This study examines journalistic strategies in terms of the appropriation of media logics in the conflict frame building process. Relying on three models: objectivity, mediatisation and news framing; the research interrogates the role orientations and performance of journalists who reported the conflict involving the ‘indigenous’ Christians and Hausa Fulani Muslim ‘settlers’ of Jos - a city in North Central Nigeria inhabited by approximately one million people. It provides empirical evidence of the strategies and the representations of ethnic and religious identities in the conflict narratives focusing on the most cited and vicious conflict in Jos which occurred in 2001, 2008 and 2010. Drawing on in-depth individual interviews with print and broadcast journalists resident in Jos (to understand their role orientations/conceptions), and the qualitative content analysis of two Nigerian newspapers of ‘Christian South’ and ‘Muslim North’ (to know their role performance in terms of linguistic choices), the study makes two major contributions that demonstrate the ‘strategic’ role of journalists in the conflict. First, it establishes that a number of strategies were used: their choice of words to ‘moderate’ or ‘water down’ conflict: the implanting, reinforcement, community-aided strategies, among others. Importantly, it discovers the Neutral-to-goal-focused/pyramid strategy which presents a systematic frame building process that alters the nuanced inverted pyramid news structure. This evolving strategy advances an understanding of journalists’ framing of ethnic and religious identities. Second, it establishes that journalists share membership of their ethnic and/or religious community influenced by residential segregation of the city, internal and external pressure and exposure to violence. The study demonstrates large scale participation by journalists in the conflict resulting in the escalation of violence. Thus, mediatised conflict research is revisited – placing media logics at the heart of the conflict. The research proposes a Solutions-Review Journalism (SRJ) as a framework for conflict reporting and argues that a review process is necessary to measure impact.

This thesis goes through the notions of "profession", "professionnalisation", "professionnalism", "corporation", "sociability" questionning dramatic and musical criticism as an original part of journalistic circle. This one is distinguished by an ambiguous social position, between theater and journalism. We'll consider the ways the profesional group rises up and gets built, his characteristics, his representations and values system. The analysis is based on the study of annual publication of the "profesionnal and mutual association of the dramatic and musical criticism", between 1899 and 1937. Presenting the approach, the first part examines the context of rising up and structuration of the profesional group, and the critic fonction and place from 1880 to 1930. We consider here the different fonctions of theater journalism ("critique", "soiriste", "echotier", "courrieriste". . . ) and point out the modern fonction of the theater director. In the second part, we study the composition of the professionnal association and its strategies for legitimation. While the multiple professionnal activities of the members insists on the link between litterary, journalistic, theater, and politic circles, the critics group tries to defend his legitimity and his power in front of the artists, and the theater administration. They gradually conquer a real power to manage the conflicts. The third part questions the strategies used to keep this power. Those ones first suppose the cohesion and the unicity of the group expressed by the inside sociability practices and the mutualist character of the association. The profits demanded are more symbolic than material. The political stake comes first, as we can see also in the outside sociability practices (banquets, international congresses). Those ones develop a large network of knowings, which is a way for individual social progress, and source of collective legitimation

Resumen
This study look into women who works as sports journalists. The purpose is to examine how they see their own role as women and sports journalists and how the work environment has evolved over time. The purpose is answered via three questions, How does women sports journalists view their own role, How do they feel about the reactions from athletes, colleagues and the audience, and How do they experience their work environment. To answer the questions we use qualitative interviews which are examined with the theories of power and gender by Pierre Bourdieu and the perspectives of gender from Gunilla Jarlbro and Gayle Rubin. The study also uses identity theory published by Nils Hammarén and Thomas Johansson. The study shows that sports journalism is a stressful job, especially for women sports journalists, who have the pressure to create content that generates money for the business owners, and at the same time have to prove their knowledge and professionalism in the field of sports journalism.

Based on the current situation in the media and the fact that newspapers have cut down on journalists over the last ten to fifteen years, especially those located in small, remote areas, the main purpose of this thesis was to study how all the remaining local editors in rural Västerbotten think of their role and what their driving forces are as well as what challenges and opportunities they face in their everyday work life. Qualitative interviews were conducted with all the seven local editors who currently work in rural Västerbotten and then analyzed through theories of local journalism and democracy, a media landscape in constant change, journalistic profession and identity. The results showed that their role is complex and has plenty of contradictions. Their driving forces and ambitions conflict with their work situation. While they are driven by high democratic standards in their work, they feel that they don’t have enough time for investigative journalism as a lot of their time goes to reporting from at least two municipalities each. They also express that the one municipality where they don’t live doesn’t get as much coverage as they would like and is somewhat forgotten. A lot of them are well known in the place where they live and work and some people feel a close connection to the newspaper because of them. Many of them also have difficulties stepping out of their role in their spare time. At the same time, they express that they don’t have the same contact with readers like they used to. They are close but at the same time distanced from their readers.

Resumen
This thesis is a qualitative study that examines the correlation between the activist movement #MeToo and the possible effects it had on journalists’ professional conduct with regard to ethics, through the theoretical framework of journalism culture and patriotic journalism. The analysis is based on six semi- structured interviews with journalists that were involved in publications during the height of the #MeToo movement in Sweden. The study indicates that the movement influenced the informants, several found it difficult to differentiate the personal and work-related impact it had on them at the time. Their intense coverage of the movement was fueled by the engaged public, as well as the activist movement itself, which could be interpreted as market orientation or interventionism – or both. Their expressed solidarity with the movement’s values and goals, as well as the fact that their own industry had a specific #MeToo- campaign, positioned the journalists between their solidarity to the society and their professional identity.

Resumen
In January 2018 the france tv-channel Canal Plus broadcasted a documentary where the swedish football player Zlatan Ibrahimović contributed in an interview, claiming that there is "under-cover"-racism in the swedish sports media. My purpose with this studie was to examine if that's true, if swedish media treat swedish football players with foreign names different then swedish football players with swedish names. Using a combination of a qualitative content analysis, critical discourse analysis and comparative method I analysed 100 articles based on ten different players - five with swedish names and five with foreign names - in the four nationwide newspapers Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. Based on theories of racism, hegemony, national identity and framing the result showed me that the biggest difference was how the players with foreign names generally speaking was shaped in a more cocky way then the players with swedish names, especially in the way the heading and preamble was angled in a more cocky manner for the players with foreign names then the players with swedish names. But besides that the most part of the result pointed at a similar treatment between the two groups.

Through the use of the interpretive lenses of sociology of news, identity, and community roles, this research aims to understand the approach to journalism by small-town weekly newspapers. The research explores how small-town weekly newspapers in rural America are faring in the current emergent media environment. Are these newspapers surviving the digital age or are they experiencing the similar hardships larger daily newspapers are facing, including revenue and circulation declines, and in some cases product elimination? The research also investigates whether or not the small-town journalism approach is different than it is for larger daily newspapers by theoretically and conceptually examining the routine practices of news gathering used by news workers, the identity formations of weekly newspaper journalists, and the journalists’ and community members’ perceptions of the weekly newspaper’s role in the community. To accomplish this, the researcher has used quantitative and qualitative research techniques, including a large-scale survey directed at weekly newspaper publishers, a thematic content analysis of weekly newspaper content, and in-depth interviews with news workers and community members, to conduct an analysis of news production in small towns in Iowa. Focusing on small-town weekly newspapers is crucial because the close, frequent and often personal interactions of small-town journalists with their audiences create the potential for a more direct effect on community members’ everyday lives. In addition to contributing to the understanding of small-town community news production, this research offers news industry leaders and practitioners insight into a different, more personally engaged, approach to journalism.

Resumen
The motive of our study was to examine the differences and the similarities between how tabloids write about male versus female cross-country skiing participants. The main focus was to examine their adversities and successes at the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018. The study had two main questions to analyze this: “How does Swedish tabloids report about the female and male cross-country skiing teams at the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018?” and “How do Swedish tabloids report about the setbacks and successes regarding the Swedish cross-country skiing teams at the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018?”. The result of our discourse analysis showed us that the tabloids present the female national team’s performance differently to how they present the male national team's performance. We made a discourse analysis of nine different articles from the Swedish tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen. The tabloids write about the female national team’s performances and successes and they balance it by also writing about their setbacks. The reasoning we found as to why the tabloids writes about female athletes more in-depthly than the men is because there is a larger demand for it, owing to their huge success in the Olympics. In contrary, the articles about the male national team, the tabloids write about their setbacks without questioning underlying factors or previous training that could be the basis of their failures. The tabloids also choose to publish articles with more private themes when it comes to the female athletes. This does not occur in the articles about the male cross country national team. In the articles about the men, the tabloids choose not to include personal facts of any kind, all analysed articles deal instead with performance or setback related types of themes.

Spurred by the rapid influence of social media in the news industry, an increased number of TV news stations have started assigning dedicated social media journalists (SMJ) in newsrooms to monitor, gather, verify, share news, and engage with audiences on the streams of social media. Consequently, drawing on the diffusion of innovation theory, the present study probes into TV journalists’ perceptions of the implications of the role of this new type of TV professionals in the identity and profession of journalism, the quality of news pertaining to the verification of misinformation, and the news audiences’ attractions and viewership by capitalizing on audience engagement affordances. Moreover, based on an online survey delivered primarily via LinkedIn to a broad spectrum of TV journalists consisting of broadcast, website, and social media journalists in three varied regions of the world—the U.S, Western Europe, and the Middle East—the study demonstrates some concerns about the effects on the code of ethics of journalism. However, most of the surveyed journalists believed that the role of social media journalists SMJ is consistent with the general principles tethered to the professional identity of journalists. Additionally, the study underlines the weight of this role to verify information gleaned from social media before being used in TV news and asserts the significance of engaging with TV audiences to increase the news viewership and enhance their attractions. Accordingly, the study argues that espousing the role of SMJ has become an inevitable fashion in social media-embedded newsrooms. However, the research documents that many TV news channels have broadcast misinformation spread on social media. Furthermore, it unfolds that far less attention has been paid in many TV newsrooms to the potentially positive and beneficial utility of the role of SMJ concerning audience engagement. It signals that a lack of time, tools, strategy, and training causes the dilution of the role quality of SMJ, thereby suggesting that news channels can aggressively tap into this role if these obstacles are conquered. Finally, since research on this concern is still scant at its initial stage, the study shows some venues for future studies in this direction.

Resumen

Drawing on broader discussions that attempt to envision new ways of negotiating identity, nationalism and race in a post-colonial, post-apartheid South Africa, this thesis examines how whiteness is constructed and negotiated within the framework of literary-journalistic narratives. It is significant that so many established journalists have chosen a literary format, in which they use the structure, conventions, form and style of the novel, while clearly foregrounding their journalistic priorities, to re-imagine possibilities for narratives of identity and belonging for white South Africans. I argue that by working at the interstice of literature and journalism, writers are able to open new rhetorical spaces in which white South African identity can be interrogated.

This thesis examines the literary narratives of Rian Malan (My Traitor&rsquo
s Heart, 1991), Antjie Krog (Country of My Skull, 1998, and Begging to be Black, 2009), Kevin Bloom (Ways of Staying, 2009) and Jonny Steinberg (Midlands, 2002). These writers all seem to grapple with the recurring themes of &lsquo
history&rsquo
, &lsquo
narrative&rsquo
and &lsquo
identity&rsquo
, and in exploring the narratives of their personal and national history, they attempt to make sense of their current situation. The texts that this thesis examines exhibit an acute awareness of the necessity of bringing whiteness into conversation with &lsquo
other&rsquo
identities, and thus I explore both the ways in which that is attempted and the degree to which the texts succeed, in their respective projects. I also examine what literary genres offer these journalists in their engagement with issues of whiteness and white identity that conventional forms of journalism do not. These writers are challenging the conventions of genre &ndash
both literary and journalistic &ndash
during a period of social and political flux, and I argue that in attempting to limn new narrative forms, they are in fact outlining new possibilities for white identities and ways of belonging and speaking. However, a close reading of these literary-journalistic narratives reveals whiteness in post-apartheid South African to be a multifaceted and often contradictory construct and position. Despite the lingering privilege and structural advantage associated with whiteness, South African whiteness appears strongly characterised by a deep-seated anxiety that stems from a perpetual sense of &lsquo
un-belonging&rsquo
. However, while white skin remains a significant marker of identity, there does appear to be the possibility of moving beyond whiteness into positions of hybridity which offer interesting potential for &lsquo
becoming-other&rsquo
.

The research aimed at analyzing the journalistic content of Cerro Cora and FM Melodia radio stations and certifying that the medium represents in a symbolic manner the culture and identity of the neighbouring communities. The analysis took place on the borders of Ponta Porã-Juan Caballero and Corumbá-Puerto Quijarro and the choice of the research objects, i.e. the neighbouring communities\' radio stations, happened thanks to their binational characteristic. Since it is a borderline region of Brazil, with countries separated by land borders and with no actual barriers between them, the exchange between communities is common-place and thus such municipalities of Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraguay and Bolivia are very peculiar subjects to research. Hence, the goal here is to identify whether the language and experiences of the population of the borders are present in the broadcast of the radio stations.

Most of the analyses dealing with gender models in sport medias lead to the same conclusion: a strong conformity to sexual order. Widely studied in Anglo-Saxon literature, male and female media representations in specialized sport magazines are particularly representative of what CONNELL (1987) calls the hegemonic masculinity and the emphasized feminity. On this basis, this thesis compares the results of these studies by meticulously analysing the gender models presented in specialised mountain bike publications. As mountain biking is an equipped outdoor activity, it is at first sight be associated to male and female models which are quite remote from the most traditional definitions of the sex categories. The analysis of the corpus, based on three main magazines in the field: Vélo Vert, Vélo Tout Terrain and VTTMag confirms at first the strong presence of the most extreme aspects of both hegemonic masculinity and emphasized feminity. But some riding contexts or specific statuses among the Mountain Bike circle provide the readers with much more innovative gender models, quite remote from the traditional media representations. Studying the Mountain Bike circle by focusing on the gender model construction in specialised publications permits to question the role of media in the production of a legitimate definition of the activity, but also to underscore the doxa (BOURDIEU, 1997) that structures this field of practice in terms of sex social relations. The analysis of career paths and journalistic practices shows that two distinct kinds of journalists exist. Based on opposite professional identification processes, these two profiles lead to more or less critical relationships with the Mountain Bike circle and the gender models enhanced in them. Moreover, these sex social relations which prevail among the editorial staffs prevent women from being heard. Insufficient in number, weakened by their status of freelance journalist and male journalist's wife, they come up against the strong male sociability which is in force in editorial offices, genuine places of construction of a "Mountain Bike masculinity". Beyond the importance of the production unit, the publishing unit, and more precisely the different publishing houses, their history, their organization, highly influence the position of each title, strongly orientating the modes of mise en scene of gender models

Resumen
The relationship between editorial and advertising departments in the written press has always been under discussion. There have been incidents, in the past, where advertisers have tried to exert influence over editorial material. In the pursuit of avoiding this, the journalistic professional identity relies heavily on independency. There is something that distinguishes the difference between the department of advertising and the editorial office, a kind of "invisible wall", one might call it. The editorial part of a newspaper work with journalism, while the advertising department is working with finances, and, according to journalistic principles, the two should never meet. In this study we have investigated the relationship between the advertising department and the editorial office of local newspapers in Sweden. We have done this by making use of qualitative interviews with respondents from these workplaces, and then analyzed their responses with a vertical and horizontal analysis method. We could in our essay, to some extent, conclude that the "invisible wall" may well have changed in recent years. It was previously set in stone, in the form that the contact between the department of advertising and the editorial office was almost non-existent. Today it rather seems to be a question of smaller forms of cooperation. We came to the conclusion that the journalistic profession and the self-image seems to be somewhat unchanged, or at least similar, to what previous research have concluded. But the actual dialogue between the different departments have come to change a bit.

Resumen
The newspaper industry has clearly been affected thoroughly by digitalization, and as a result has adapted its traditional practices to accommodate for the numerous possibilities this change presents. The printed paper is becoming less viable each day, while its online counterpart continues to gain recognition. In this thesis, we conduct a case study in order to examine a large-scale local newspaper company which has gone from analog to digital and beyond over the course of what is only a fraction of its lifetime. Qualitative interviews are conducted as part of the case study, providing us with valuable insight into both how the organization works and makes decisions as well as the perspectives of individuals. The results are analyzed through applying a theoretical framework, building on previous research regarding digitalization and convergence. The study reveals that post-digitalization technological practices and investment decisions are heavily influenced by a pre-digitalization mindset on many organizational levels, leading to a utilization of new technological services in a manner which leaves much to be desired. Still, the organization competes very well on their market as the printed issue is able to carry its own weight and more. However, sales decline rapidly, and uncertainty combined with excitement clouds the future as the organization are eager to utilize new technology, yet remain divided in opinion on what strategy to adopt when taking on new challenges in an ever more digital context. This hints of many changes to come, with the most intriguing one being what has been identified as a possible change to the very identity of the company.

Bibliography
ENGLISH ABSTRACT:In a system of representative government, the media is assumed as an important institution to reflect public concerns and holding government accountable for the way in which it addresses these public concerns. Not only is this role imposed by a paradigm which views the media as one of the institutions that sustain and consolidate liberal democracy – the so-called fourth estate alongside the legislative, executive and judicial pillars – but the media itself has conceptualised its identity around the notion that journalists are a “vital part of political life” (Sparks, 1991:58). This study explores the validity of this authority. It suggests that the authority of the media to frame public concerns in a way that is useful for ordinary citizens to “bridge the gap between the private, domestic world and the concerns and activities of the wider society (McQuail, 2005:432)” has been eroded because citizens feel that their concerns and priorities have become secondary to the priorities of powerful state, economic and other “experts” who determine the news agenda. At the same time, there is a general sense that representative government or what is generally known as liberal democracy is losing its currency because citizens have developed a “habit of seeing the political system as indifferent and unresponsive” to their problems and their circumstances (Mathews, 1999:33). This study explores the potential of a more productive relationship between the media and citizens to rekindle and energise the role of citizens to contribute to the public work of solving common problems that face the wider society. This study proposes three theoretical frameworks – democratic professionalism, public journalism and deliberative democracy – with the potential to re-conceptualise the way journalists consider their professional role. This re-conceptualisation raises the possibility for reassessing the political work of journalists and the political work of citizens and build new habits of participation and discussion in the political process of communities.

Objective: Journalistic articles published in the The New York Times, by Larry Rohter, the newspapers correspondent in Brazil, are based on a full range of impressions and notions regarding the country that his readers might have and might recognize as valid. This study seeks to identify the textual strategies followed by Rohter to reproduce, change, question, deny, or create Brazilian descriptions. Methods: By means of critical discourse analysis, mechanisms for translating concepts peculiar to Brazil for foreign understanding are evaluated, taken from basic shared knowledge and analogies with similar American concepts. The influence and reinforcement of anticipated Brazilian imagery and speculations regarding measures to be taken in the economic and political areas of the country are also analyzed. Results: Even though the storylines call up stereotypical images of Brazil, presuppositions are disrupted by distracting events that emerge and break with what is expected. The imbalance established by Rohter ends up increasing reader interest in less urgent news items, but this strategy is not as necessary in situations that are obviously conflicting, and that represent deviations in the social order, which are naturally presumed in the texts.

During the 20th century, the relationship between Media and Sport were very fertile. The revenues generated by the sale of broadcast rights, the Communication and the Media have a great influence over the global success of football. Media and sports organizations have a relationship based on tensions and cooperation and also very fluid boundaries between them. In this present work, we want to understand how media influence sports organizations, more precisely, how football clubs become a space of content and information production. Recently, sports organizations have invested on media and communication departments, either by hiring public relations and media professionals or by creating their own corporate means of communication. We have selected as research objects, the media of three sports organizations: the WebTV of Paris Saint-Germain (France), the website of Botafogo (Brazil) and the subscription TV channel of Benfica (Portugal). Our empirical work was based on ethnographic interviews with the media and communication staff at these football clubs. Based on our interviews, we aim to answer three questions about the creation of these club owned media: why they were created; how they are structured; and who is responsible for their implementation. The choice of these three clubs allowed a comparative study and the analysis of different markets and realities with diverse levels of modernization, that together with each local social context made possible an attempt to offer a generalization about club owned media and the consequences for sports journalism and the relationship between sport and media

The purpose of this investigation is to show the historic development of Palestinian journalism and the working conditions of Palestinian journalists nowadays. Several questions have motivated this research. Is it possible to be a journalist in a context physically and psychologically limited by violence? Is it possible for a Palestinian journalist to be “objective” and to work professionally in such a context? Do Palestinian journalists encounter more difficulties to accomplish their job? What kinds of institutions are responsible for the protection of journalists in the Occupied Territories? Which is the legal framework of Palestinian journalism? What training and courses does a Palestinian must follow in order to become a journalist? There is a specific “Palestinian journalistic tradition” that is part of the journalistic tradition of the region, which is still poorly understood. This legacy is a product of the region’s history and the political, economic and social conditions. The struggle for an independent state explains the recurrence of political activism among Palestinian journalists. Furthermore, the younger generations of journalists demand a higher level of professionalization and professionalism of their former colleagues, as they move away from the political sphere. This investigation seeks to clarify the “Palestinian journalistic tradition” and its elements to understand why, despite the activism behind this legacy, Palestinian journalists are able to work professionally. Palestinian journalists are genuine spokesmen of their society

This research aims to identify, understand and analyze the strategies of representation of alterity in Brazilian television narratives, taking as specific objects of study the journalistic and serial fiction genres, in the formats of in-depth reporting and telenovela (soap opera). The defined corpus includes 16 editions of the journalistic program Globo Repórter and four telenovelas - \"Além do Horizonte\", \"Amor Eterno Amor\", \"Joia Rara\" and \"Salve Jorge\" - that address other countries, as well as biomes and communities in Brazil portrayed as exotic. Our approach combines theoretical references of language sciences, cultural studies and the specific fields of journalism and fiction theories, as well as scholars in the areas of narrative, image and television language studies, including authors such as S. Moscovici, H. Bhabha, M. Farré, J. Català, T. Todorov, S. Hall, K. Woodward, M. Foucault, V. Flusser, F. Jost, A. Machado, M. Gomes, E. Bucci, and M. Sodré. Among the basic theoretical-methodological concepts for the proposed analysis are those of social representation; narrative of alterity, designed as an opposing-complementary idea to the national narrative; evenemential image, which contextualizes the connection between the production of visual narratives and the organization of world experiences; and the notions of geographical and socio-cultural alterity, which indicate a way to examine the different boundaries between the \"self\" / \"us\" and the \"other\" in communicational processes. After presenting theoretical reflections on the fields of narrative, images and journalistic and fictional discourses, we will analyze the audiovisual material, focusing on three categories that allow us to identify the main resources applied to the representation of the other in television: (a) the strategies of authentication and production of reality effects based on a testimonial rhetoric; (b) the construction of oppositions and the demarcation of boundaries between the near and the distant; and (c) the interactions between fictionalization and factualization in narratives, driven by a type of configuration that takes alterity itself as the intrigue or conflict of a story at different levels of intensity. Finally, we identify eight strategies that work as structuring frameworks for alterity narratives applied to journalism and serial fictions on TV, reiterating the functions of reconfiguration and disciplining of experience in this field of representation.
