Resumen
The Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) is the only medicolegal death investigation system of the US federal government. Its origins can be traced to three dried tissue specimens placed on a shelf by a Civil War Surgeon General in 1862. The collections and the library of the Army Surgeon General spawned the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), the National Museum of Health and Medicine, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and the National Library of Medicine. Pathologists of the Army Medical Museum performed the autopsies of assassinated Presidents Lincoln and Garfield and assisted with that of Kennedy. The now defunct AFIP created the first forensic pathology training program approved by the American Board of Pathology and then the AFMES. Col Ed Johnston, CAPT Charlie Stahl, and Col Dick Froede were the original pioneers of the AFMES.

Resumen
I arrived in Washington, D.C. in June 1983 to begin a two-year appointment as Director of Programs for the American Anthropological Association. Neither my wife nor I had lived before in an inner city of our own country. We chose an apartment a block from the AAA office, within a mile or two of the Kennedy Center, The Library of Congress, the National Zoo, and many of the galleries, museums, and monuments that define the city—places that had influenced our decision to temporarily leave our home in southern California.

Texto completo
Resumen
The species Filaroides (Parafilaroides) gymnurus (Railliet, 1899) Anderson, 1978 is redescribed, based on examination of mature fifth-stage specimens from wild infected ringed seals (Phoca hispida), harp seals (Phoca groenlandica), harbour seals (Phoca vitulina), and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) collected in eastern and arctic Canadian waters. Mature specimens of Filaroides (Parafilaroides) hispidus Kennedy, 1986 from ringed seals and grey seals were also examined. Comparison of these worms with museum specimens and the literature led to a review of species in the subgenus Parafilaroides (Dougherty, 1946) Anderson, 1978. Filaroides (Parafilaroides) gymnurus (Railliet, 1899) Anderson, 1978, F. (P.) decorus (Dougherty and Herman, 1947) Anderson, 1978, F. (P.) hydrurgae (Mawson, 1953) Kennedy, 1986, and F. (P.) hispidus Kennedy, 1986 are recognized as valid species. Filaroides (Parafilaroides) arcticus (Delyamure and Alekseev, 1966) Kennedy, 1986 and F. (P.) krascheninnikovi (Yurakhno and Skrjabin, 1971) Kennedy, 1986 are synonymized with F. (P.) gymnurus (Railliet, 1899) Anderson, 1978. Filaroides (Parafilaroides) caspicus (Kurochkin and Zablotsky, 1958) Kennedy, 1986 is considered a species inquirenda.

Resumen
The Edo-Tokyo Museum Library is the specialist library of a museum that opened in 1993, and that has a particular focus on the history and culture of Tokyo (known in pre-modern times as Edo). It houses a collection of books, documents, secondary materials and microfilms covering history, performing arts, customs and traditions, architecture, literature and much else. The Library’s holdings are a part of the Museum’s collections; we record them and store them, making them available for public consultation on the understanding that they are objects to be treated with care, preserved for future generations, and may also be used in the museum exhibitions. At the same time, we also make a point of collecting art exhibition catalogues, and we have characteristics of an art library. On the eve of our 20th anniversary our operations are due for a review, but here I will concentrate on giving a brief summary of our activities.

Resumen
Should museums open their libraries to the general public? This is a delicate question, widely discussed within and outside the museum community. The lack of a consensus on this topic made it one of the key points at the Libraries in museums – museums in libraries conference, held in Moscow in May 1999. While the recently-established ‘Open Museum’ Association in Russia aims to make all museum activities open to the public, and to develop interactive communication with both real and virtual museum visitors, libraries are not yet one of its priorities. However Irina Timasheva firmly advocates changing the role and mission of museum libraries, as has been done at the Samara Museum, and demonstrates the benefits to both museum and local community. Even if this ‘first swallow is not yet a Spring’, there is already a quite noticeable trend towards the open museum library in Russia.

Resumen
Typically, museums are seen as the primary venue for exhibitions. However, an interest in library exhibitions has been growing as indicated by increased literature in the library field, albeit with a large focus on academic libraries. On a broader scale, library exhibitions continue to be under-researched as indicated by the continuing lack of library exhibition evaluation standards, library exhibition reviews, and exhibition-related professional training for librarians. In this 2021 study, interviews were conducted at eight Washington, DC-based art museum libraries: The National Gallery of Art, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, The American Art and Portrait Gallery, The Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The National Museum of African Art, The Phillips Collection, and the George Washington University Textile Museum. This paper is an examination of the current state of exhibitions in art museum libraries and aims to establish a set of best practices to help foster the production of art museum library exhibitions.

Resumen
The Library of the Ethnographic Museum is a special museum library. It is of a semi-closed type, which is the case with most special and museum libraries. It is primarily intended for the museum staff: curators, conservators and preparators. It was founded not long after the museum had been established and it grew simultaneously with the museum collection. The paper provides an overview of its history, some of its more important collections and the processing of the publications. Nevertheless, it also presents some of the problems faced

The South African Museum (cultural history) opened in 1966 as part of the South African Museum; in 1969 it began an independent existence as the South African Cultural History Museum, with a mission to enable the ‘entire community… to enjoy and to learn about our Cape and international heritage’. The library dates back to the opening of the museum, and now comprises some 12,000 books, 900 pamphlets, and 190 current journals on art related topics. Although the library exists primarily to serve the museum staff, it is open to the public and is well used by students.
