This thesis explores the reasons why Christian churches have been at the centre of Korean immigrant communities in North America and the recent changes in the characteristics of Korean immigrant churches. The Korean American Catholic church has been permanently impacted by Confucian ideals. These values have perpetuated a filial patriarchal image of God resulting in the marginalization and subordination of women. It has distorted the image of God and has damaged the self-image carried by first and second generation Korean American Catholic women. Liberative feminist theology that recognizes the full humanity of women is the means by which second generation Korean American Catholic women can begin to reconstruct a fragmented self-image and image of God.

<p> Researcher surveyed 200 Korean- speaking Korean American Believers in Bergen County of NJ with questionnaire 'ACMRT', Attitude toward Church Membership Retention and Transfer (10-questions questionnaire). Only 24% have remained in their original church and that 76% have transferred churches, many of whom more than once. Church satisfaction is not higher among the transfers in comparison to the retained. Apart from "moving" the most cited cause for leaving a previous church was conflict.</p><p>

The thesis explores the intersection between medicine and religion in the context of colonisation in Korea in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. I will focus on the work of medical missionaries from Europe and North America that pursued perfect cleanliness in body, mind and society, including total abstinence and spiritual cleanliness, by spreading biomedical concept of hygiene. One of the points that I will articulate is the ways in which medicine as a colonising force in its own right worked in the mission field to produce 'the docile bodies of people' in the Foucauldian sense.

<p> Taiwan and Korea have been categorized in the same cluster of Confucian and hierarchical cultures. However, Korean missionary pastors in Taiwan experience significant cross-cultural differences that directly affect the effectiveness of their leadership among Taiwanese congregants. </p><p> This study discloses the four factors contributing to the effectiveness of select Korean missionary pastors: (a) personal traits, (b) interaction on cross-cultural issues, (c) trust, and (d) spirituality.
