Resumen
This thesis analyzes the marketing of the Women's Land Army (WLA) using archival sources. I explore how farmerettes, the name given to WLA members, used their patriotic work on the farm as a means of redefining femininity and interrogating the definition of "true womanhood." "That Dame's Got Grit" discusses how the WLA was sold in World War I and World War II. The first chapter describes the press book used to market Little Comrade, a 1919 film about a fashionable farmerette. The theme of uniforms, an idea that weaves throughout the thesis, emerges strongly in this chapter. "A Seductive Smile," the second chapter, discusses the WLA posters in terms of the pin-up genre. The thesis concludes with an analysis of the Oregon State University Extension Service photos. In all of the chapters, farmerettes struggle with crafting an image based on hard work and an attractive appearance.

Resumen
This research is an ethnography of a British Army regiment from the perspective of women married to servicemen. Its aim is to question wives's power and positionality vis-à-vis the military institution and consider the implications for how to understand the everyday operation of military power. The project is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted on and around a regimental camp in Germany during a period when the regiment’s soldiers were also deployed in Afghanistan. As social relations are spun across multiple times and spaces, it analyses women's negotiation of presence and absence, home and away, and distance and proximity. Women married to servicemen emerge as mobile subjects, whose gendered labour and identities serve to trouble the boundary between the military and civilian 'spheres'. The research explores multiple conditions for women's encounters with military presence on a day-to-day basis, from the mandate for international migration and the regiment’s production of social cohesion, to the formal hierarchy of rank and the temporal and spatial registers of an operational tour. The analysis highlights the dependence of these structures on a military-sexual division of labour, at the same time as women can be argued to mobilise social, cultural and discursive resources to appropriate or transcend the place they are allocated in a military social order. It is in this sense that they might be argued to bargain with the terms of their militarisation.

Joint Applied Project
This Joint Applied Project examined the technical, operational and programmatic implementation of Information Assurance (IA) as it relates to the Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) Land Mobile Radio (LMR) program within the United States (U.S.) Army. This project provides an overview of the LMR system, its capabilities and technical requirements, as well as the IA processes and requirements. The project then examines the technical aspects and impacts of implementing the IA requirements on the LMR system with possible interoperability with the Global Information Grid (GIG). As a result of this project, the U.S. Army will have a better understanding of the impact of IA on fielded LMR systems and its future impact to critical communications.

Resumen
This study examines the Women's Land Army (WLA) in Britain: a new, mobile, agricultural labour force of women specially recruited to assist in increasing the production of home-grown food during both World Wars, as men were called up to join the fighting forces. Its role was particularly important due to imported food supplies being destroyed through enemy action at sea, which successive governments feared might result in starvation of the nation. A review of literature on the WLA indicates that it has been a relatively little researched area in both women's history and agricultural history and the aim of this study is to begin to redress the balance. The thesis considers the introduction of the WLA (1917-19) as this provided the platform from which its sister organisation was launched in 1939. The context in which the WLA operated (1939-1950) is analysed together with the structure and function of the organisation, its relationships with government ministries and regional agencies and its concomitant redevelopment through to disbanding in 1950. The formulation of national policies at government level to set up the WLA and recruit its membership is examined and assessed, as are policies on the accommodation and welfare of recruits, their training, work and conditions of service and the winding down of the organisation. The implementation of these policies within the complex county administrative structure of the Yorkshire Ridings and Craven district is explored. This was a particularly difficult task for the WLA due to the reluctance of the local agricultural community to employ women on its farms. The WLA had, therefore, to overcome prejudice as well as new and difficult working conditions if it was to be successful. The outcomes of policies are presented through previously undocumented data obtained from undertaking oral history interviews with 32 former WLA recruits on their experiences of working on the land during the Second World War as they endeavoured to put policy decisions into practice. The contribution of the WLA is evaluated and findings from the study show that the organisation achieved its objective of placing a new and mobile female agricultural labour force on the land. Furthermore, women in the WLA, albeit from the landowning classes, participated in the making of national policy in a period when male decision makers dominated rural and urban contexts. In addition, while WLA recruits performed practical agricultural tasks consistent with traditional views on what was appropriate work for women, for example horticulture and the care of livestock, they also challenged the status quo. They undertook jobs such as fieldwork, tractor driving and the operation of mechanical implements formerly considered to be beyond the physical and mental capacities of women. The participation of the WLA in the greater mechanisation of the agricultural industry has hitherto largely been overlooked. The involvement of recruits also resulted in achieving government targets of increasing the acreage of both national and local crop cultivation between 1939 and 1944 in order to feed the country. The contribution made by the WLA convinced an initially sceptical agricultural community of its ability and commitment to the cause resulting in the WLA being operational for a total of 11 years, some five years beyond the cessation of hostilities in 1945.

Resumen
Methods and techniques for environmental impact assessment (EIA) and development of land use management options are described. The methods and techniques have specific application in Defence estate management, and general application in other areas of land use assessment and management. The EIA methodology includes techniques for land cover and soil classification, land capability and suitability assessment. The biophysical classifications and assessment techniques are based on the application of various para and non- parametric approaches. The study area for the application of the EIA methods and techniques was the Singleton Training Area (STA) in the Hunter Valley of central New South Wales. Defence estates are required to provide a wide range of terrain and other environmental conditions to support the development of combat related tactics. The maintenance of these areas for sustainable use is fundamental in achieving both military and land use management objectives. The EIA of the STA provided a means of testing the efficiency of the methods and techniques developed in this thesis. The baseline resource inventory data used in the EIA includes land cover and vegetation maps derived from satellite digital data and soils maps derived from both conventional methods and airborne gammaradiation data. This information, together with the military land use requirements provided the basis for land capability and suitability assessment, and development of land use management options.

Resumen
The Department of the Military Science at Utah State University was created in 1898 and is the oldest department at USU. Until the mid-1950s it was mandatory that all male students be enrolled in Military training at the school and, if they so decided, would finish up the last two years of military training to become officers in the United States Military. This program is known as ROTC. Fully implemented at USU in 1916 the ROTC program continued to grow and would help fund the growth of campus during the 1920’s and 30’s. Following World War II the program became the largest ROTC unit in the nation and was nicknamed “West Point of the West”. The school produced more officers than any other college besides the Military Academy at West Point. The documentary film that I made follows the history of Utah State University from its founding in 1888 to the modern day research University of today. Using interviews of past and current ROTC cadets as well as the experts on the history of USU and ROTC, the film weaves the history of the expansion of the USU campus and the role that the Army ROTC unit had in the school’s development. Much of my research was done in special collections at the USU library where many of the photos for the film were found. Some of my research took me to the National Archives and the Library of Congress which proved to be invaluable when finding early military photos and documents. A total budget cost of USD$10,000 was spent on camera gear, travel expenses, drone footage, and digital storage solutions. The film was fully funded, written, shot, edited, and finished by myself and took 1 ½ years to make from start to finish. The end result is a 53-minute documentary delivered on a Blu Ray disk, the film is also accessible to the public via online streaming.

Powell, Maria Elena. "The evolution of international restraints on chemical weapons and land mines : the interplay between international humanitarian law and arms control". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15359.

Resumen
Weapons are acquired to protect the national security interests of the state: they may be used to settle disputes between one state and another, or they are accumulated as a defensive precaution to dissuade any future or offensive military action. Quite often, weapons are used in great quantities in various internal conflicts to the detriment of the individual, both civilian and combatant. Over time, the international community has developed certain humanitarian principles, norms, treaties and control mechanisms to reduce tensions between states, and to lessen the consequences of unrestrained weapons use. International Humanitarian Law (IHL) or the Law of War seeks to regulate or prohibit the use of particular weapons based on the principle that the means of injuring one's enemies are not unlimited, and that there should be restraints on weapons which are indiscriminate or cause unnecessary suffering. Arms control and disarmament law seeks to limit or even prohibit the use, transfer or trade, production, and stockpiling of certain weapons. There is an interplay between these two approaches when the weapon in question is being restrained because of its perceived nature. Two weapons that have evoked calls for prohibition or restriction because of their pernicious nature are chemical weapons and land mines. Currently, in the Post-Cold War security environment, both these weapons are high on the international political and security agenda rendering them relevant subjects for a comparative study. This thesis examines the respective histories of these regimes of restraint and attempts to determine what lessons may be drawn in comparing efforts to place legal prohibitions on so-deemed inhumane or intolerable weapons. By examining the main similarities and differences in responses to chemical weapons and land mines, it may possible to understand what criteria are necessary for prohibiting a weapon on humanitarian grounds.

Konstantaki, Maria. "Evaluation of dry-land ergometry in assessment of cardiopulmonary and metabolic responses to arm and leg exercise in swimmers". Thesis, De Montfort University, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/10700.

Texto completo
Resumen
Dry-land ergometry has been proposed as an alternative method to water-based testing in an attempt to circumvent the difficulties associated with physiological assessment of swimmers during swimming itself. The aim of the studies presented in this thesis was to evaluate the usefulness of dry-land ergometry. The objectives of the studies presented in this thesis were to ascertain whether dry-land measurements could differentiate between trained and untrained swimmers, assess the effects of training and reflect water-based measurements. To realise this aim and the objectives, three studies that assessed physiological parameters of swimmers using dry-land ergometry and water-based testing were undertaken. The first study compared lactate and oxygen uptake responses to separate dry-land armpulling and leg-kicking in recreational (RSW) and collegiate swimmers (SW). The exercise intensity at a blood lactate concentration of 4 mmol-l" (E~) and the peak oxygen uptake (V OZpeok), peak exercise intensity (ElpeU.)and peak lactate (HLapeU.)responses to incremental arm-pulling and leg-kicking were established for both groups. The results showed that, for armpulling, SW achieved higher E~ (94 ± 6.0 W versus 70 ± 6.3 W; P<0.05) and EIpeok(114 ± 6.0 W versus 90 ± 4.0 W; P<0.05) than RSW, whereas, for leg-kicking, none of the responses differed between the two groups. These results suggested that arm conditioning was enhanced in SW and this was reflected in the dry-land measurements of E4nM and EIpeok. Therefore, it was possible to establish the differences in physiological responses between SW and RSW using dryland ergometry. The second study assessed the effects of arms- versus legs-only swimming training on performance indices and gas exchange responses to separate dry-land arm-pulling and leg-kicking in competitive swimmers. Two groups of swimmers performed arms- (ARMS) or legs-only (LEGS) swimming exercises for 20% of their training time, 3 times a week for six weeks. Waterbased (swim trials) and dry-land assessments were conducted prior to and immediately after the 6-week training period. The swim trials included a 200 m arms-only (200ARMS),a 200 m legs-only (200u,GS) and a 400 m (400ruu) front crawl test. Distance per pull (DPP) and distance per kick (DPK) for 200ARMSand 200LEOS were calculated from video recordings. The dry-land assessments included measurements of oxygen uptake (V02), ventilatory threshold (VT) and total exercise time (TEn during an incremental arm-pulling and leg-kicking exercise test. The results showed that arm training improved 200ARMS(184 ± 10.0 s versus 164 ± 6.0 s) and DPP (+10 ± 3%) in the ARMS and leg training improved 200u,os (223 ± 10.0 versus 211 ± 10.0 s) and DPK (+5 ± 2%) in the LEGS (all at P<0.05). The changes due to arm training were reflected in the armII ulling measurements of increased VTw (+20 ± 3%), reduced V02 at 60W (-18 ± 2%) and increased TET (465 ± 8 s versus 675 ± 15 s), whereas the changes due to leg training were reflected in VT w (+37 ± 5%) and reduced V02 at 60W (-20 ± 3%). These results suggested that arms- or legs-only swimming training induces changes in arms- or legs-only swmunmg performance, but these do not necessarily translate into improved full-stroke swimming performance. Also, results indicate that dry-land ergometry can detect the changes due to armsor legs-only swimming training in the physiological responses to arm-pulling or leg-kicking. The third study compared the cardiopulmonary responses to whole-body, arms- and legsonly dry-land exercise and free swimming. The peak oxygen uptake (V 02pea) and peak heart rate (HR,eu) responses to whole-body, arm-pulling and leg-kicking exercise were established in both exercise modalities. The results showed that V02peak was higher in whole-body exercise than arms-only or legs-only exercise in both exercise modalities (dry-land: 3.69 ± 0.18 l-min" versus 3.18 ± 0.43 lmin" and 3.15 ± 0.54 l-min", respectively. P<0.05, swimming: 4.12 ± 0.84 l-min" versus 3.36 ± 0.52 l-min" and 3.55 ± 0.43 l-min", respectively; P<0.05) and also that whole-body V02peak was 10% higher during free swimming than during dry-land exercise. No differences were noted for HRpea between whole-body, arms-only and legs-only exercise in both exercise modalities. These results suggested that the higher VOZpeak noted for whole-body free swimming compared to combined arm-leg exercise could be due to limitations in the design of the dry-land ergometer used as the difference was small. Therefore, it was shown that dry-land measurements compare favourably with water-based measurements. The use of dry-land ergometry presents several limitations, which are mainly concerned with the design of this equipment. However, all the above fmdings demonstrate that dry-land ergometry might be a valuable tool for assessment of those physiological responses (i.e. continuous measurement of gas exchange measures) that, at present, are difficult to be conducted in the water. Therefore, dry-land ergometry might be used as an alternative and/or supplement to water-based testing.

Resumen
Bats occupy diverse and unique niches and are regarded as important components in maintaining ecosystem health. They are major consumers of nocturnal insects, serve as pollinators, seed disperser, and provide important economic benefits as consumers of agricultural and forest pest insects. Bats have been proposed as good indicators of the integrity of natural communities because they integrate a number of resource attributes and may show population declines quickly if a resource attribute is missing. Establishing community- and population-level data, and understanding species interactions is especially important in changing landscapes and for species whose populations levels are threatened by outside factors of anthropomorphic disturbance from hibernacular visitation to energy production and fungal pathogens. For these reasons I have set out to establish habitat use patterns, detection probabilities, spatial and temporal occupancy, and investigate species interactions. This thesis is broken down into three distinct chapters each intended to be a stand-alone document. The first establishes the basic ecology from natural history accounts, provides an overview of the various sampling strategies, and gives a comprehensive description of the study area. The seconds sets out to identify the factors influencing detection probabilities and occupancy of six sympatric bats species and provide insight into habitat use patterns. The third examines spatial and temporal activity patterns and investigates species interactions. This study can provide understanding into the secretive and poorly understood patterns of free flying bats across the landscape. It can also deliver useful information to land managers regarding potential changes in landscape practices for the conservation of bat species.

Saaiman, Hurchele. "Evaluating the role of non governmental organisations in global governance : case studies of two campaigns". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52832.

Resumen
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This is a study of the growmg importance of Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in global governance. Global governance is defined as a complex and dynamic process that deals with issues that go beyond the capacity of national governments, that is distinguished from global government because of an absence of a central authority that can ensure compliance and the presence of a wide range of actors including non-state actors. The theory of Complex Multilateralism captures the role of NGOs and NGO coalitions well. Using this theory as a theoretical framework, this study focuses on two recent transnational NGO campaigns (The International Campaign to Ban Landmines [fCBL) and the NGOs against Arms Trade) to determine why some NGO campaigns are more successful than others. The theory of Complex Multilateralism in combination with extensive information on different types of NGOs and their activities on national and international levels, makes it possible to identify criteria that can determine success. These criteria are: a realistic goal, the issue area (type, number, salience and techniques used to frame the issue), government and intergovernmental organisation (lGO) commitment, access to IGOs, extensive expertise, effective use of the media, effective use of information technology, activity variance, leadership, persuasive and influential spokespersons, membership and funds. These criteria are described, defined and then applied to the above-mentioned transnational NGO campaigns. The main finding was that the ICBL was the more successful of the two campaigns because it had more of the criteria for success. In this case the most important reasons for success is: a realistic goal, the focus on a single issue and the effective framing of the issue, significant government commitment as well as good leadership. Although, the criteria that were developed can hardly be universalised, they do provide a useful starting point for further research into this important field in International Studies.

Kushite warriors were reputed to excel as archers, ancient Egyptians called the region Ta-Seti, “the land of bow”. Kush is the name of a district but also a political entity. As any political unit, the different kingdoms of Kush had a warrior force, which has continuously evolved over the centuries, due also to the series of Egyptian and Kushite occupations of the territory. This study consists of a description and a typological and technical classification of weapons produced and used during the Sudanese antiquity: knives, daggers, swords, battle axes, maces, spears, quivers, bows, arrows, archer braces, archer rings, etc. Adapted to the military context of each period, these weapons are tools of knowledge, witnessing a situation that has evolved based on multiple criteria such as the notion of “chaîne opératoire”, the organization of workshops, the skills of artisans, the technical, stylistic and cultural choices and influences, the distinction between imports and local manufacturing, the warriors status, the funerary deposits, and the political and religious symbols attached to it

Recently, industrial dual-arm robots have gained attention as novel tools and we therefore focus on them to flexible control both the linear motion and the rotational motion of a working plate. However, it is difficult to measure the synchronous accuracy of two rotary axes without high accuracy gyro sensor. Thus, we proposed a novel method to measure it with a ball, which keeps a ball rolling around a circular path on it by dual-arm cooperative control. As a result, we demonstrated this method made it feasible to estimate the synchronous accuracy of two rotary axes of working plate.

Conventional warfare is not obsolete. Lessons from the five-day war in Georgia in August 2008, shows that this possibility is still valid and very much alive. However, last decade’s transformation of western military and counterinsurgency efforts around the globe has severely restricted most nations’ capability to wage conventional warfare.

Several lessons can be identified from the Georgian Army’s struggle against a shocking and overwhelming Russian aggression. From a Norwegian Land forces perspective, the most important should be the importance of combined arms and robust brigade size units, the impact of adequate air defence capabilities, indirect fire and anti-armour systems against a mechanized opponent supported by sufficient airpower.

Due to a changing world order, realism is charging ground and can be used to explain and foresee future challenges. We can not precisely predict the future; however the future will certainly hold elements of the past.

As NATO is trying to find its place in a changing globalized world, simultaneously as it is waging a protracted hybrid war in Afghanistan, great power rivalry is again rising amongst the nations like it did in the beginning of the 20th century.

In order to support national interest and maintain national sovereignty, military capability still depends on robust and well balanced conventional military forces. Land warfare plays an important role in any kind of self defence and deterrence. Strengthening of Norway’s land forces would certainly be needed in order to achieve this aim.

What is the relationship between land-based security threats and the objectives of military reform in the PLA Army? After considering this relationship, is the continued advancement of PLA Army capabilities the most optimal policy choice? This thesis attempts to address these questions by examining various land-based security threats and applying this understanding to military reform in PLA Army. The foundation of this research will rely on the analysis of white paper guidance published by the Central Military Commission under the Communist Party of China. Theoretically, this study displays the question of military reform as either an optimal or suboptimal decision. The rationale behind the quality of the PLA Army’s decision to bolster their military capabilities relies on the state of China’s international security environment. Understanding the advancements of the PLA Army’s reform within this context is vital to recognizing the thought process of Central Military Commission and can provide a more nuanced image of the PLAA. Additionally, countries with an interest in the People’s Republic of China will be able to reevaluate their military policies in the Asia-Pacific region while considering the position of the PLAA.

Resumen
To maintain high levels of proficiency and readiness the U.S. Army trains its soldiers on military bases across the country. However, the Army currently possesses an insufficient amount of land with which to train on, necessitating an expansion of current bases. This paper explores the Army's land acquisition policies, using as case studies the ongoing expansions at Fort Carson in Colorado and Fort Polk in Louisiana. Fort Carson, which announced expansion plans in 2006, faced strong opposition and the project has ground to a halt. In early 2009 Fort Polk announced a 100,000-acre expansion. They have utilized a broad public outreach program and promised on numerous occasions not to use eminent domain to acquire privately-held land. As a result, the Polk expansion has proceeded much more smoothly. Using lessons learned from the pair of case studies, this paper then presents a list of best practices the Army can use for future land acquisition projects.

Due to the rapid development in city, the usable land in Taiwan has been decreasing day by day. During the phase of downsizing of military organization, the vacant barracks lands have been released more and more by the pressure from the local government, legislators, and various civil organizations. It is very important to create a WIN-WIN situation by balancing the “National Security”, “Local Construction”, and “Citizens’ Needs”. Although the military barracks land for sales is getting more and more expensive, it is no longer profitable for a long term. The Executive Yuan keeps asking the urban land less than 500 units not to be sold, so all government organizations try to gain more profit by more flexible land use and drawing more local capital. Due to less information about land re-utilization of military barracks land, it is essential to get the optimal mode by case study and analysis. This thesis aims to integrate and analyze the national land used for construction by case study of successful flexible use of land and various related laws and regulations. Hopefully it can help achieve the goal of eternal business operation by sorting the current status of barracks land, planning the proper use of barrack land, establishing mode of flexible land use, and finally strengthening the effectiveness of barracks land use.

The purpose of this dissertation is to develop an original model with operational potential resulting from the lethality of weapons to fully describe a combined arms land battle. First, by reviewing literature and studying modern operational simulation systems, this dissertation identifies the problems in defence quantitative analysis. Next, this dissertation develops a lethality coefficient that is able to consider the lethality of weapons. Third, this dissertation improves Lanchester mixed forces equations and then associates them with system dynamics to develop a precise and extensive combined arms land battle model. This dissertation then extends the model to AirLand battles described by three dimensional operations. Fourth, the developed models are verified using model validity tests to assess whether they approximate real systems. Finally, by simulating with some tactics scenarios, the developed model is able to fully describe the behaviour in modern combined arms land battles and reflect the synergy resulted from the interaction of strategies and force redeployment. Moreover, the human-based interface of the proposed model makes it easy for the user to model other scenarios. This dissertation also confirms the problems related to the use of combat reserve and the assignment of attack helicopter forces confused in real systems and provides new insight to enable a commander to make decisions by quantitative analysis in order to strengthen the confidence and quality of decision making.

Many feminists actively strive for gender equality, the fight against gender discrimination trends impact, combined with the abundant civil female human male soldiers in the army, shortages, and a group of women with "excelling" spirit, joined the ranks of the army. This group of women, in the traditional male-oriented environment, from exclusion to be suspect, from admission to be integration, even in this place, leading the group. They do in these ordinary life, to live out her own extraordinary? The purpose of this study, by a qualitative research approach, the actual and these serve as leader of female officers, through in-depth interviews, find them and traditional leadership theories and models of differences, whether because of their gender roles and environmental impact, and produce a new leadership model. In addition, the study also attempted to explore, in their leadership, influence their behavior, as well as the problems and difficulties. The study of women leaders in the army has developed the traditional male leadership attaches to the "independent" and "rational" and "aggressive", "it is more important than the person", which will make the best use of "care" and "communication", "listen", "required" and "heavy" interpersonal, with female orientation trait leadership model. These characteristics through personal traits, military organization to socio-cultural environment interaction and was trained. At the same time, military organizations and cultural changes in the environment of that began to change. It is a future trend to include the function of wireless networking in portable electronic devices, such as notebooks, tablet PC, PDA, mobile phone, and other information applicants. IEEE 802.11 is the most popular wireless LAN protocol that defines the functions in the medium access control (MAC) layer and physical layer. In this thesis, we design and implement a flexible and reusable soft IP (Intellectual Property) for wireless MAC that is compatible with AMBA system and can be used in SOC applications. The wireless MAC supports buffer descriptors, interrupt and DMA. The IP provides an AMBA-compatible interface for the host system bus, and provides a communication interface for the baseband processor in the physical layer.
