Resumen
Starting from comments on parks, this article discusses some common problems of city landscape. It argues that strategies and methodology of landscape design should consider four aspects: constantly changing intension of landscape, aesthetic significance beyond function, respect for nature and emotional landscape design. So far I have given an interview to South China Daily on problems in design and management of parks in Guangzhou and how to make them better. On the whole, these parks have much space for improvement. Lack of culture and local characteristics, functionalism and crude design have made parks an unpopular place, especially for young people. Not only parks in Guangzhou but also most parks in Chinese cities share the same problems, and criticism on Chinese parks leads to thoughts beyond park itself. These common difficulties which are easily been classified as substantial issue are in fact reflection of social culture. I'd like to take park issues as a start of the discussion on content and design problems of city landscape.

Resumen
Urban green space is believed as a beneficial landscape for mental restoration in the urban settings. This study aims to examine the restorative quality of the urban green space from a multi-sensory perspective, focusing on both direct and indirect connections between visual, auditory, and tactile sensations and mental restoration. Two hundred and fifty park users of Tianhe Park in Guangzhou, China, were surveyed. Data were collected regarding their three types of sensations, i.e., the perceived mental restoration, health-related behavioral activities and emotional responses in the urban park. As a result, visual and auditory sensation were found to be linked with mental restoration directly and indirectly, while the tactile sensation was only associated with mental restoration indirectly; and health-related behaviors and emotional response mediated the relations between the three sensations and mental restoration significantly. It is concluded that the greater effects of auditory sensation and the under-studied potential effects of tactile sensation on mental restoration should be more emphasized in the future design of urban park. This is expected to contribute to the high restorative quality of the urban green space and promote public health.

Resumen
<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The goal of this research is to apply diagrams to environmental color studies. The experience of environmental color is not only visual experience, but also the relationship of the color and the form of the object, the material, the place, the human perception experience. Diagrams records these factors along with the human perception experiences. These diagrams make it possible to study and analyze environmental color more deeply and more easily. In this paper, we first reviewed the "case studies of environmental color workshops" and "theory of information processing by rearranging matrix of Jacques Bertin" which are related to this research. Next, we conducted an environmental color workshop and evaluated the application of diagrams at workshop by students and experts (design teachers and designers). As a result, we confirmed that the diagrams proposed by us are effective for the environmental color workshop. In particular, it was confirmed that these diagrams are effective for group discussion (analysis).</p><p>The workshop was held at the South China University of Technology (Guangzhou, China) on October 14 – October 17, 2016 (Figure.1). The participants were 5 students. First, students walked along a path near the natural lake in the campus and recorded the observed color objects and their perception experiences. Next, the students (A, B, C, D, E) entered the observation results into the matrix type diagram (a) (Figure.2). In diagram (a), the colors observed by each student were displayed on the left side of the observation route, and the photographs of the color objects, the perception experiences on the color objects, and the landscape photographs of the observation place were arranged on the right side of the observation route. Next, according to Jacques Bertin's theory (visual variables and rearrangement of the matrix), diagram (a) was transformed into diagram (b) (Figure.3) and group discussion and information analysis were carried out. In diagram (b), color objects are represented as "rows", and various attributes of color objects as "columns". The attributes of color objects are the keywords extracted from the "perception experiences for color objects" in diagram (a). In the notation of visual variables, ordinary impression was displayed as gray dot, good impression was displayed as orange dot, bad impression was indicated as blue dot, and the number of observers was indicated by the size of the dot. Looking at Figure.3-left, the most common thing is finding color objects by "brightness", and the number of observers who recorded the "brightness" of bicycle is the largest. By rearranging the matrix in diagram (b), we found that the color objects can be divided into "gray", "white" and "yellow" (Figure.3-middle), there were many good impressions for "yellow and white (flowers)", and there were many bad impressions for "gray and white (street lights)" (Figure.3-right).</p>

Resumen
Wake in Guangzhou: The History of the Earth is a site-specific installation exhibited in in the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou, China, that problematizes issues of migration, trade, and landscape transformation. Wake in Guangzhou investigates the origin of the seeds found on the site of Huagui Lu, in the Liwan district in Guangzhou’s city center, where today a hundred wholesale markets exist. A mound of earth was removed from Huagui lu, a street in the Liwan District, the former merchant quarter’s of Guangdong. The earth sample was put in the courtyard of the Guangzhou Museum so dormant seeds previously buried in deep layers could germinate when exposed. The botanist Heli Jutila writes, “Although seeds seem to be dead, they are in fact alive and can remain vital in soil for decades, and even hundreds of years in a state of dormancy.”

Resumen
The residential location choice of the highly educated population is an important consideration to construct a livable city. While landscape and environment are important factors, few studies have deeply analyzed the spatial heterogeneity effects of landscape and environment on the residential location choices of a highly educated population. Taking Guangzhou as the sample, we built a livability-oriented conceptual framework of landscape and environment, and constructed datasets for highly educated population proportion, landscape, and environment factors, and other influencing factors for Guangzhou’s 1364 communities. Global regression and geographically weighted regression (GWR) models are used for analysis. The GWR model is more effective than the global regression model. We found spatial heterogeneity in the strength and direction of the relationship between the highly educated population proportion and landscape and environment. We find that landscape and environment exert spatial heterogeneity effects on the residential location choice of the highly educated population in Guangzhou. The conclusions will be of reference value to further understand how the spatial limitations of landscape and environment affect residential location choices. This study will help city managers formulate spatially differentiated environment improvement policies, thereby increasing the city’s sustainable development capabilities.

Resumen
Linguistic landscape is a study field covering all linguistic objects in public spaces. It provides an important perspective for investigating the dynamics of social life and language change in given territories. Guangzhou, a significant commercial center in southern China, is renowned for its globalized development. With the growth of globalization, the increasing intrusion of English and the emerging English varieties have occurred in the urban linguistic landscapes of Guangzhou City. Therefore, this descriptive qualitative study collected English usage in the public sphere by taking pictures of private signs in two commercial centers. Monolingual and bilingual public signage displayed in public spaces shows that English has been an important foreign language widely used in Guangzhou's cityscape. Meanwhile, the use of English in Guangzhou is somewhat affected by local languages, a phenomenon called glocalization. The misuse of English, code-mixing between Chinese and English, and emerging English varieties are the product of glocalization. This study can shed light on the present linguistic situation of English in Guangzhou. Additionally, it provides evidence for the development process of glocalized English and translanguaging practice in southern Chinese communities.

Resumen
In the last few decades, urban communities in China have experienced unprecedented social and spatial changes under the heightened mobility, which is induced by urban redevelopment and expansion. Prior works of community satisfaction of Chinese urban residents gave little attention to the influence of past residential mobility experiences, which is insufficient to capture the dynamics of urban community in a rapidly changing environment. The paper attempts to address this deficiency in the literature by including characteristics of a resident’s last mobility experience in the model to understand the resident’s community satisfaction based on a city-wide survey in Guangzhou, China. The two-level linear hierarchical regression analysis substantiates the importance of the last mobility experience in a resident’s satisfaction with current community. It reveals that those experienced the “upgrade” relocation from informal communities to formal communities, or former work unit compounds to developed commodity housing estates, will be more satisfied with the community than those did not have such experience. It also reveals that the effects of a resident’s personal and socio-economic characteristics on the resident’s community satisfaction also heavily depend on his or her most recent mobility pattern. The findings in this paper have both policy and practical implications for informing community governance and urban planning in China and worldwide.

Resumen
Hong Kong island is located in Southern China at the mouth of the Pearl River. Its coastal location down river from the significant port-city of Guangzhou (formerly Canton), is strategically located in the trade route known as the Maritime Silk Road, the 2,000-year-old trade between China, Southeast Asia, India and Arabia. It was because of this trade that the waters and islands at the Pearl River mouth were frequented by many nations, and where the Portuguese had their port-city, Macau from 1557, and the British were based on Hong Kong island from 1842. Over the next 60 years, the British leased further surrounding territories and the arrangement eventually led to the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, hereafter called the Hong Kong region. A significant maritime cultural landscape was built up, which included sites from earlier periods. An example of this maritime cultural landscape can be seen in the Sai Kung (eastern) district of the Hong Kong region. Many ships travelled along this coastline between the northern China ports and Guangzhou, and a number of coastal facilities were established. Beginning in 2009, a group of Hong Kong residents (Hong Kong Underwater Heritage Group) implemented a series of maritime archaeological projects in the Sai Kung district in collaboration with the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM). The results of this work can be seen in three maritime archaeology survey and excavation projects implemented from 2014 to 2017, including the discovery of a 1,000-year-old underwater cultural heritage (UCH) site. They complement the many coastal cultural heritage in the Sai Kung district to reveal its maritime cultural landscape.

Resumen
Ormosia pinnata (Lour.) Merr. is an important tree used for landscape and plant recovery of barren slopes in China. During an investigation of plant disease on landscape trees in 2018, a dieback was observed on O. pinnata trees in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. Symptoms were characterized by initial dryness of the twigs and eventual death of the whole branch of the tree. Isolations from symptomatic branches yielded 13 isolates including two main morphotypes. Pathogenicity tests showed that isolate GDOP1 from Type I caused dieback of O. pinnata. Based on morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer rDNA (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and partial sequence of the translation elongation factor 1α (EF1-α), the fungus causing dieback on O. pinnata was identified as Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae. This is the first report of L. pseudotheobromae infecting O. pinnata in the world.

Resumen
Rapid urbanization is one of the most important factors causing land-use change, which mainly results from the orientation of government policies, adjustment of industrial structure, and migration of the rural population. Land use and land cover change (LUCC) is the natural foundation of urban development that is significantly influenced by human activities. By analyzing the LUCC and its inner driving force, as well as landscape pattern change, human activity and urban sustainable development can be better understood. This research adopted a geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technology to comprehensively analyze land use of Guangzhou, respectively, in 1995, 2005, and 2015. Fragmentation Statistics (FRAGSTATS) is the most authoritative software to calculate landscape metrics. Landscape pattern change was analyzed by FRAGSTATS. The results showed that urban land significantly increased from 16.33% in 1995 to 36.05% in 2015. Farmland greatly decreased from 45.16% in 1995 to 27.82% in 2005 and then slightly decreased to 25.10% in 2015. In the first decade, the non-agricultural conversion of rural land and the expansion of urban land was the dominant factor that led to the change. In the second decade, urban land had been supplemented through the redevelopment of low-efficiency land. The fragmentation of landscape patterns significantly increased from 1995 to 2005 and slightly decreased from 2005 to 2015. It indicated that the change in land use in the second decade was different from that in the first. This difference mainly resulted from three aspects: (1) urban development area and ecological conservation area were clearly defined in Guangzhou; (2) many small towns had developed into urban centers, and the scattered urban land gathered into these centers; (3) the establishment of greenway improved the connection of fragmented patches. After that, this study discussed land-use change and its causes and proposed the trend of urban development from the perspective of sustainability.

Resumen
The Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China is one of the major bay areas in the world. However, the spatiotemporal characteristics and rationalities of urban expansions within this region over a relatively long period of time are not well-understood. This study explored the spatiotemporal evolution of 11 cities within the GBA in 1987–2017 by integrating remote sensing, landscape analysis, and geographic information system (GIS) techniques, and further evaluated the rationalities of their expansion using the urban area population elastic coefficient (UPEC) and the urban area gross domestic product (GDP) elastic coefficient (UGEC). The results showed the following: (1) Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai experienced unprecedented urbanization compared with the other cities, and from 1987 to 2017, their urban areas expanded by 10.12, 11.48, 14.21, 24.90, 37.07, and 30.15 times, respectively; (2) several expansion patterns were observed in the 11 cities, including a mononuclear polygon radiation pattern (Guangzhou and Foshan), a double-nucleated polygon pattern (Macau and Zhongshan), and a multi-nuclear urbanization pattern (Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Dongguan, Jiangmen, Huizhou, Zhaoqing, and Zhuhai); (3) with regard to the proportion of area, the edge-expansion and outlying growth types were the predominant types for all 11 cities, and the infilling growth type was the one of the important types during 2007–2017 for Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and Foshan; (4) the expansion of most cities took on an urban-to-rural landscape gradient, especially for Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Zhongshan, Dongguan, and Zhuhai; and (5) the rationalities of expansion in several time periods were rational for Guangzhou (1997–2007), Hong Kong (2007–2017), Foshan (1987–2007), Huizhou (1987–1997), and Dongguan (1997–2007), and the rationalities of expansion in the other cities and time periods were found to be irrational. These findings may help policy- and decision-makers to maintain the sustainable development of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Greater Bay Area.

Resumen
Purpose Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem which imposes a significant financial burden not only on patients but also on the healthcare systems, especially under the pressure of the rapid growth of the elderly population in China. The purpose of this paper is to examine the hospitalization costs of patients with CKD between two urban health insurance schemes and investigate the factors that were associated with their inpatient costs in Guangzhou, China. Design/methodology/approach This was a prevalence-based, observational study using data derived from two insurance claims databases during the period from January 2010 to December 2012 in the largest city, Guangzhou in Southern China. The authors identified 5,803 hospitalizations under two urban health insurance schemes. An extension of generalized linear model – the extended estimating equations approach – was performed to identify the main drivers of total inpatient costs. Findings Among 5,803 inpatients with CKD, the mean age was 60.6. The average length of stay (LOS) was 14.4 days. The average hospitalization costs per inpatient were CNY15,517.7. The mean inpatient costs for patients with Urban Employee-based Basic Medical Insurance (UEBMI) scheme (CNY15,582.0) were higher than those under Urban Resident-based Basic Medical Insurance (URBMI) scheme (CNY14,917.0). However, the percentage of out-of-pocket expenses for the UEBMI patients (19.8 percent) was only half of that for the URBMI patients (44.5 percent). Insurance type, age, comorbidities, dialysis therapies, severity of disease, LOS and hospital levels were significantly associated with hospitalization costs. Originality/value The costs of hospitalization for CKD were high and differed by types of insurance schemes. This was the first study to compare the differences in hospitalization costs of patients with CKD under two different urban insurance schemes in China. The findings of this study could provide economic evidence for understanding the burden of CKD and evaluating different treatment of CKD (dialysis therapy) in China. Such useful information could also be used by policy makers in health insurance program evaluation and health resources allocation.

Resumen
Abstract China has achieved significant progress on wastewater treatment and aquatic environmental protection. However, leakage (in- and exfiltration) of sewer systems is still an issue. By using the statistical data of water and wastewater in 2016 in China, and the person loads (PLs) of water and wastewater in Singapore, the leakage fractions of hydraulic flow, organic carbon (COD), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) mass loading, and in-sewer COD biological removal in the sewer systems of China (except Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan), Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing were reported for the first time. The fractions of hydraulic flow infiltration (13%, Shanghai and Guangzhou) and exfiltration (39%, China) were calculated. Except Beijing, whose sewer networks are under appropriate management with small leakage fractions, the exfiltration fractions of COD (including in-sewer biological COD removal) ranged from 41% (Shanghai) to 66% (China) and averaged 55%; N ranged from 18% (Shanghai) to 48% (China) and averaged 33%; and P ranged from 23% (Shanghai and Guangzhou) to 44% (China) and averaged 30%. The exfiltrated sewage, COD, N and P not only wastes resources, but also contaminates the aquatic environment (especially groundwater) and contributes to ‘black and odorous water bodies’. In- and exfiltration in the sewer network leads to low influent COD concentration, C/N ratio and high inorganic solids and inert particulate COD concentrations of many municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) causing high cost for nutrient removal, poor resource recovery, additional reactor/settler volume requirement and other operational problems. Therefore, tackling sewer leakage is of primary importance to today's environment in China. Recommendations for the inspection of sewer systems and the rehabilitation of damaged sewers as well as the development of design and operation guidelines of municipal WWTPs tailored to the specific local sewage characteristics and other conditions are proposed.

Resumen
Given the increasing scarcity of urban land, the Chinese government has been initiating large-scale redevelopment of urban villages that are commonly regarded problematic for their low land use efficiencies and negative externalities. During this process, the emerging neo-urbanism in China demonstrates the heterogeneity of institutional arrangements, with different levels of transaction costs incurred. To explore the transaction costs incurred in different institutional arrangements of urban village redevelopment projects, this study anatomizes three projects in Guangzhou from the perspective of neo-institutional economics. The project duration and level of conflict are taken as two key variables to evaluate the efficiency and equality of the projects. With this research design, this study illustrates that institutional arrangements significantly affect the project outcomes. The conclusion suggests that the local and central governments alter the existing institutions with a view to lowering the transaction costs.

Resumen
AbstractLanguages and linguistic resources transport from one locality to another, adapting to the norms, customs, and regulations of a new locality. This process involves translocalization. Translocalization emphasizes the movement of linguistic resources against the backdrop of globalization and the combination or reframing of resources from different localities. This research explores the extent to which translocalization is reflected by the linguistic landscapes of three distinct commercial areas in Guangzhou, China. It goes on to discuss how translocalization works together with social rescaling to incur the movement of linguistic resources and to result in distinct linguistic landscapes of the three commercial areas. It concludes that some languages or linguistic resources, such as English, pinyin and traditional Chinese writing, are transported to local contexts for the purpose of rescaling, whereas other languages or dialects, like Cantonese, might gradually lose their function of rescaling and retain its function in indexing local identity and solidarity. This study calls for more attention to the local resources and contexts in linguistic landscape studies. It argues for the indexical function of linguistic resources in social rescaling and city planning.

Resumen
Urban rivers have always been the foundation of urban development. In the industrial era, many countries, including China, have experienced the painful lessons of environmental pollution. From the human-water relationship study date back to ancient time, we know that there is urgent need for the reversal of this negative human impact. The naturalization design of urban water landscape requires (1) use the advanced science and technology in project planning, design, construction and management; (2) save the project investment, speed up the progress and guarantee the project quality; (3) suitable for bio-lived and multiplied and for the survival needs of the organism after river training. When conducting the urban river landscape design, we should plan and design carefully based on natural and ecological principles, and the aim is not only visually pleasing, but also ecologically sustainable.

Resumen
Purpose Since Cantonese opera was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, the Chinese government has carried out different policies to “develop” Cantonese opera in Guangzhou. Through state-initiated reforms, the local performing art was homogenized, institutionalized and nationalized in many ways. In this process, the government authorities took the lead and the Cantonese opera music community was not involved in the decision making of the future of their own tradition. This paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach Based on intensive fieldwork conducted in 2011, the paper examines the meaning of heritage to the local music community, as the art form was recognized by UNESCO in 2009. Apart from studying the policies made by the government, this paper looks into the socio-political impact brought to the Cantonese opera music community from a bottom-up perspective. Findings Cantonese opera performances in Guangzhou as well as performers’ own social life changed drastically in recent years. Musicians faced a dilemma of whether to follow the government’s market-oriented plan or to preserve their traditional lifestyle with their own initiative. Originality/value This paper reveals the voices of the “voiceless” music community and investigates the consequences resulted by the heritagization of the art form to the music community.

Resumen
Abstract This paper is an attempt to find an answer to the question of how to design a writing course for the teaching of Business English at Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade (GIFT) in China. Such a question implies a critical review of the practice of Business English teaching at GIFT and of some contemporary foreign language teaching theories. It is argued that the basic criterion for a Business English course design is that the specification of the language required by the learner defines the course content, and that the categories of the business communicative function can become the framework of a writing course in business English.

Resumen
Due to the recent excessive pursuit of rapid economic development in China, the cultural heritage resources have been gradually destroyed. This paper proposes cultural recovery and ecological remediation patterns, and adopts virtual reality (VR) technology to evaluate the visual aesthetic effect of the restored landscape. The results show that: (1) the average vegetation coverage increased, providing data support for remediation design evaluation; and (2) the fixation counts and average saccade counts of the subjects increased after the remediation design, indicating that the restored cultural landscape reduced visual fatigue and provided a better visual aesthetic experience. Furthermore, the comparative analysis of the quality of the water environment shows that the remediation design project improved the ecological environment quality of the relics area. The results of this study will contribute to rural revitalization in minority areas in southwest China.

Resumen
Few studies have examined the issue of the sustainable destination development of hot spring from tourists’ perspective. This study thus proposes a model for sustainable tourism development of hot spring destinations following poverty alleviation in local communities. This model is based on environmental (environmental cognition), sociocultural (hot spring experience, food experience, and attitude toward cultural landscape), and economic (revisit intention) dimensions (factors) of sustainability. The analysis of 271 valid on-site questionnaires about the Conghua hot spring destination in Guangzhou, China, showed that the attitude toward cultural landscape, hot spring experiences, and environmental cognition are the important factors that influence the intention of tourists to revisit hot spring. These findings are based on the level of importance; however, food experience did not play a significant role. Through the cultural landscape, the connection between tourists and destinations is strengthened, which helps to increase the likelihood of tourists revisiting the destination. This study found that the purpose of cultural legacy can be achieved while balancing environmental development issues, and is one of the guidelines for sustainable development in poverty alleviation in destination.

Resumen
This paper indicates that there are no more sustainable concerns and instructions about urban design in current China relative planning Code when using the principles of eco-design principles as a lens to critical thinking about site choice, land use, transportation, road system, architecture massing, and spatial urban form. Furthermore, it is very hard for urban designer to design a sustainable project. This can be mitigated by taking mixed land use, TOD (Transit-Oriented Development), and 3D (Three Dimension) design methods. However, to design a sustainable site, to build a high performance building, other eco-design issues such as water saving, energy efficiency, air quality improvement, 3R materials use, eco-landscape etc. must be considered carefully in future design. Sustainable thinking should be the guideline through the whole urban design process.
