Resumen
In this concluding article we discuss the three approaches to biographical stress and coping research presented in this issue, under four main headings. The first topic comprises the comparison of the three approaches with regard to their biographical features. In a second part we turn to the issue of coping and examine differences as well as similarities between the coping concept of Hans Thomae, on the one hand and that of Lazarus and Folkman on the other hand. The third and fourth of our discussion points deal with two central topics, that are accentuated in present personality psychology: the person‐situation issue and the idiographic‐nomothetic debate. With regard to both topics, we discuss the ideas and research findings which Lazarus and Folkman, as well as Thomae are contributing to these issues. We conclude our discussion of biographical approaches to stress and coping by proposing a person‐centred approach, that can be regarded as a further development of theoretical conceptualizations contained in the approaches of Lazarus and Thomae.

Comparisons were made of dual-earner and nondual-earner women's stress and coping strategies. A questionnaire was developed from the Hassles Scale (Kanner, Coyne, Schaefer, & Lazarus, 1981) and the Ways of Coping Checklist (Folkman & Lazarus, 1980). Dual-earner women reported significantly more hassles than nondual-earner women. However, there were no significant differences on intensity level of these hassles. Several between- and within-group differences on coping strategies were found. Both groups tended to use more problem-focused coping strategies than emotion-focused coping strategies and, contrary to expectations, both groups expressed overall satisfaction with their coping strategies.

This study presents convergent support for the use of five empirically constructed factors from the “Ways of Coping Questionnaire.” Five coping factors were congruent with the factors reported in a study conducted by Folkman and Lazarus in 1985. The results support a concept of coping as defined by the factors, for student populations. Researchers need to explore different coping contexts to facilitate research and increase our knowledge of coping processes.

This article is a theoretical synthesis of two distinct concepts: student teacher stress and physical exercise. This article begins by reviewing the literature surrounding these two ideas and leads to a theoretical framework that integrates the concepts embedded in Loehr’s theories on stress and physical exercise, as well as Folkman and Lazarus’ model of cognitive appraisal. The article proposes an explanation of how physical exercise interacts with cognitive appraisal.

Two of the more commonly known measures of coping in rehabilitation and counseling are the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ; Folkman & Lazarus, 1988; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) and the Brief COPE (BC; Carver, 1997).Purpose: The present study had two goals: (a) to examine the revised structures of these measures to determine the reliability and validity when used in a sample of individuals with latedeafness, and (b) to examine differences in coping style in individuals with late-deafness across race, ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic status (SES), level of hearing loss, communication style, and employment.Methods: An online, quantitative survey was used to collect data from participants (N = 277) who completed the WCQ, the BC, measures of life satisfaction, and a demographic questionnaire.Results: The two revised factors from the WCQ correlated as expected with life satisfaction, demonstrating convergent validity. However, discriminant validity was not found with this measure. Four of the six revised factors of the BC correlated as expected with life satisfaction, indicating acceptable convergent validity. In addition, discriminant validity was found with this measure. A few differences in coping were found on the basis of age, SES, and gender.Conclusion: The results suggest that the BC, with the revised factors, is a solid measure of coping in individuals with late-deafness.

This exploratory investigation examined the value of using Lazarus’ (1991; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) stress model, (i.e., primary appraisal, secondary appraisal, and perceived coping) to identify the antecedents of cognitive and somatic state anxiety for endurance athletes. This study also assessed whether endurance athletes with qualitatively similar levels of cognitive and somatic anxiety demonstrate differential antecedent profiles. Participants were 175 triathletes, 70 distance runners, and 70 cyclists who completed stress-related questionnaires 1-2 days prior to competition and the CSAI-2 approximately one hour before competing. Results revealed that all three components of Lazarus’ stress model predicted both cognitive and somatic state anxiety better than did individual model components. Moreover, perceived threat accounted for a greater percentage of variance in cognitive and somatic anxiety than did perceived control or coping resources. Cluster analyses revealed distinct antecedent profiles for high, moderate, low, and “repressed” anxious endurance athletes, suggesting that multiple antecedent profiles may exist for highly anxious athletes in endurance sports.

SynopsisThe principal aim of this study was to assess the validity and usefulness of the Ways of Coping (Revised) questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1985) with a British sample of parents of children with Down's syndrome. Factor analysis yielded five subscales which were compared with those reported elsewhere. Other properties of the instrument were investigated. It was concluded that the instrument was potentially valuable to those investigating coping in families with special problems.

A profissão de bombeiro implica gerir situações stressantes e uma diversidade de emoções. Este estudo pretende compreender a influência das emoções expressas no trabalho sobre a satisfação com a profissão e perceber se esta é mediada pelas estratégias de coping. Os resultados revelaram que a combinação das emoções expressas no trabalho com as estratégias de coping pode aumentar a satisfação profissional e pode conduzir a uma melhor gestão das situações stressantes no trabalho (S. Folkman e R. Lazarus, 1991).

Nos últimos 200 anos o mundo em que vivemos tem experimentado mudanças drásticas e significativas. Tudo que a humanidade experimentou durante esse tempo não se compara em nada com os demais anos anteriores de sua história. Entramos numa era que as capacidades humanas são exigidas ao máximo, com o objetivo de alcançar a produtividade e eficiência dos recursos para o fim da acumulação. Tudo isso, tem levado a um tipo de sentimento que tem se tornado o mal do século XXI, o estresse. É com base nesse contexto, de mudanças no mundo e no campo do trabalho, que o presente artigo se baseia para tratar do tema do estresse, e mais especificamente do enfrentamento (coping) do estresse no trabalho. Partindo dessa perspectiva, esse artigo teve como objetivo identificar as estratégias de enfrentamento do estresse dos funcionários de uma industria multinacional no município de João Pessoa, baseada nas estratégias levantadas pelos pesquisadores Folkman e Lazarus (1984). A metodologia utilizada na pesquisa foi um estudo de caso do tipo descritivo com uma abordagem quantitativa. Para coleta de dados foi utilizado o questionário WCQ – Ways Of Coping Questionnaire de Folkman e Lazarus, aplicado a 50 (cinquenta) funcionários de diversas áreas, considerando os níveis estratégico, tático e operacional da empresa Companha Brasileira do Setor Alimentício – CBSA, no mês de janeiro de 2014.

This study examined the effects of demographic factors on coping responses among police officers. A sample of 233 police officers completed the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988). The regression analysis showed that the higher the reported educational attainment, the more police officers reported coping which was emotion-focused and seeking social support. The rank of the officer was directly related to reported emotion-focused coping. These results are discussed relative to research on the relations of demographic factors and coping responses among police officers.

As a conceptual framework for research on stress and coping, the transactional model of Lazarus and Folkman is process-oriented and requires methodologies that capture the process nature of cognitive appraisal and coping across stages of a transaction. Two forms of canonical correlation were used to analyze strength of association measures between pairs of cognitive appraisal and coping variable sets for 138 student subjects. Analysis indicated that, when an environmental transaction includes more than one time period, the generalized canonical correlation approach may offer some advantages in assessing linkage strength over the pairwise method.

This paper discusses the benefits of using theory-driven research in sport and exercise psychology using individuals with physical disabilities. The cognitively oriented theories of transactional stress and emotion (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), attributional theory (Weiner, 1985), and theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1985) are outlined. Relevant research with individuals with physical disabilities is examined. The paper addresses how integrating these three theories with research with this population can stimulate research ideas, improve the generality of theories used in sport and exercise psychology, and provide meaningful knowledge about their experiences.

Coping behavior is defined as individuals’ transactions to cope with the various demands (internal and external). Coping strategies aim to address the situation and demands which pressing, challenging, taxing and exceed the resources (resources). Coping resources affects the coping strategies that will be done in addressing the issue. The aim of this article was to explore further coping stategies mentioned by several scholars, including Stuart and Sundeen (1991), Lazarus and Folkman (1984), as well as Friedman (1998). Method used was literature review. AbstractThis study aims to determine the effect of virtue transcendence and coping stress variables on subjective well-being of young students in Indramayu. A sample of 424 adolescents were taken from three Islamic boarding schools in Indramayu, the technique of taking data using simple random sampling. Measuring instruments used to measure subjective well-being in this study are the FS (Flourishing Scale) and SPANE (Scale of Positive and Negative Affect) developed by Diener & Diener (2009), the measuring instrument used to measure virtue transcendence is VIA- The IS (Values in Action Inventory of Strengths) developed by Peterson & Seligman (2004), and the measuring tool for measuring coping stress is the ways of coping developed by Lazarus and Folkman (1984) in the form of self reports. The major hypothesis test results from this study are that there is a significant effect of virtue transcendence and coping stress on subjective well-being with a value of R2; 0.361 (36.1%) and p-value; 0,000.AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh variabel virtue transcendence dan coping stress terhadap kesejahteraan subjektif pada remaja santri di Indramayu. Sampel berjumlah 424 remaja yang diambil dari tiga pondok pesantren di Indramayu, tehnik pengambilan data menggunakan simple random sampling. Alat ukur yang digunakan untuk mengukur subjective well-being pada penelitian ini adalah FS (Flourishing Scale) dan SPANE (Scale of Positive and Negative Affect) yang dikembangkan oleh Diener & Diener (2009), alat ukur yang digunakan untuk mengukur virtue transcendence adalah VIA-IS (Values in Action Inventory of Strengths) yang dikembangkan oleh Peterson & Seligman (2004), dan alat ukur untuk mengukur coping stress yaitu ways of coping yang dikembangkan oleh Lazarus dan Folkman (1984) berbentuk self report. Hasil uji hipotesis mayor dari penelitian ini adalah terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan virtue transcendence dan coping stress terhadap subjective well-being dengan nilai R2; 0.361 (36,1%) dan p-value; 0.000.

Resumo Objetivo: Identificar as estratégias de enfrentamento dos enfermeiros em serviço hospitalar de emergência e relacioná-las às variáveis sociodemográficas e profissionais. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 89 enfermeiros. Os instrumentos de pesquisa foram: formulário para caracterização dos sujeitos e o Inventário de Estratégias de Enfrentamento de Folkman e Lazarus. Resultados: As estratégias de enfrentamento mais utilizadas foram: resolução de problemas e reavaliação positiva; a menos utilizada, foi o confronto. As estratégias confronto, reavaliação positiva, e fuga e esquiva foram associadas ao sexo masculino, não ter um companheiro e trabalhar em período noturno, respectivamente. Conclusão: As estratégias de enfrentamento podem ser auxiliadas por acompanhamento escuta, programas educacionais e um espaço para discussão das dificuldades relacionadas ao trabalho.

The burden of caregivers has been intensively researched for the past 30 years and has resulted in a multitude of individual findings. This review illustrates the significance of the hypothetical construct of perceived burden for the further development and design of the homecare situation. Following explanations regarding the term informal caregiver, we derive the construct burden from its conceptual association with the transactional stress model of Lazarus and Folkman. Once the extent and characteristics of burden have been set forth, we then present the impact of perceived burden as the care situation. The question of predictors of burden will lead into the last section from which implications can be derived for homecare and relief of caregivers.

SYRIAN REFUGEES IN TURKEY. THE SPECIFICITY OF DEALING WITH THE SITUATION OF FORCED MIGRATIONThe article addresses the research question: “How do Syrian refugee women in Turkey cope with the problems related to the forced migration?”. The research findings are based on qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted in Hatay province, south-east Turkey. While presenting main categories of problems and coping strategies authors pay a special attention to the role of religion and culture in coping process. The theoretical framework of the study is based on such concepts as coping with stress (Lazarus and Folkman), religious coping (Pargament) and meaning-making (Park). Discussing the research findings authors also present the categories they found most representative to the Islamic cultural context.

Following the theoretical framework of Lazarus and Folkman (1984), recently adapted to sport (Fletcher, Hanton, & Mellalieu, 2006), 12 elite UK track athletes (M age = 22.7; SD = 2.4 years) participated in semistructured interviews to identify sources of strain. Inductive content analysis identified 11 general dimensions of sources of strain from 664 meaning units, which were subsequently categorized into competitive, organizational, and personal domains. Several sources of strain (e.g., competitive concerns, pressure to perform) were consistent with previous research supporting the suggestion that a core group of stressors may be evident across sports although several sources of strain appeared to be more pertinent to track athletes (e.g., social evaluation and self-presentation concerns) highlighting the need to consider group differences.

For years, behavioral scientists have been examining the process of coping with life-threatening illnesses. In fact, much of the work in this area has been influenced by cognitive-behavioral theories (e.g., Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). The purpose of this article is to apply Beck’s model of cognitive therapy to coping, to discuss specific cognitive processes related to life-threatening illnesses, and to suggest specific interventions appropriate for individuals diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. AIDS, cancer, and myocardial infarction are discussed in terms of the emotional reactions they may produce (e.g., anxiety, depression, and anger). Cognitive processes related to these emotions are examined and cognitive therapy techniques are suggested for helping individuals with maladaptive emotional and behavioral coping responses.

In the oncology specialty, many factors can result in occupational stress in nursing professionals. As an attempt to controlling this situation, individuals may use coping strategies. Coping is a cognitive and behavioral effort one uses to face a stressful situation. The aims of this study were to identify the stressful factors regarding oncology nurses, and to verify what coping strategies they use. Two questionnaires were used: a demographic data inventory, designed by the researcher, and the Folkman and Lazarus coping strategies inventory. The results showed that the main stressful factors for oncology nurses are patient death (28.6%), emergency situations (16.9%), relationship issues with the nursing team (15.5%), and work-process situations (15.5%). In the studied population, the main coping strategy used was positive reappraisal.

O presente artigo apresenta os modelos de coping de Folkman e Lazarus, e de Rudolph, Denning e Weisz, bem como suas diferentes posições teóricas e metodológicas. As definições de estilos e estratégias de coping, sua eficácia e possíveis relações com traços de personalidade são discutidas. É salientada a necessidade de uma teoria de stress-coping específica para crianças, tendo em vista as mudanças cognitivas que ocorrem no curso de seu desenvolvimento. Este artigo apresenta também questões controversas sobre o tema e aponta a necessidade de pesquisas sobre coping no Brasil, para auxiliar na compreensão e desenvolvimento deste conceito.

Der vorliegende Beitrag befasst sich mit der Frage, welche Schutzfaktoren dazu beitragen, dass Kinder dem Übergang mit Gefühlen der Vorfreude begegnen und sie dieses Ereignis problemorientiert bewältigen. Untersucht werden 596 ViertklässlerInnen aus Bayern und Hessen vor dem Übergang in die Sekundarstufe. In Anlehnung an die kognitiv-transaktionale Theorie von Lazarus und Folkman (1984) werden die Zusammenhänge von primärer Bewertung als Herausforderung und problemorientierter Stressbewältigung unter Berücksichtigung von personalen (akademisches Selbstkonzept, Selbstwirksamkeit) und sozialen Schutzfaktoren (Familienzusammenhalt, allgemeines förderndes Elternverhalten) analysiert. Mithilfe von Strukturgleichungsmodellen lassen sich Mediationseffekte der Schutzfaktoren nachweisen. Insbesondere das akademische Selbstkonzept und ein förderliches Familienumfeld erweisen sich als bedeutsame protektive Faktoren in der Phase vor dem Übergang.

Stress coping inventories can be divided into trait questionnaires independent from situational factors and situation-related inventories. In a previous study, a situation-related version of the Stressverarbeitungsfragebogen (SVF120; Janke & Erdmann, 1997 ), adapted from the instructions of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WCQ, Folkman & Lazarus, 1988 ), showed reliabilities and factor structures similar to those of the standard version. In the present study, we compared the medium-term stability over a time period of 4 weeks between the situational WCQ version and the situation-independent standard version of the SVF120. The standard version of the SVF120 was filled out by 140 subjects and the WCQ version by 132 subjects. We could confirm that both questionnaires provide similar psychometric properties when a single assessment is considered. We found, however, distinct differences in stability over time. While stability coefficients of the standard version are close to the values of the internal consistency of the scales and factors, almost all stability coefficients of the WCQ version were significantly lower. Absolute stability proved to be considerably lower for the WCQ version. It can be concluded that the WCQ test format is not appropriate for the assessment of person-environment transactions according to the objective of the Lazarus theory, since it is not insensitive to test repetition.

The relationship between prospective teachers' preferred strategies for coping with stress and their perceptions of student control were examined by use of a relational survey model to determine the relations between these concepts. The study group consisted of 267 prospective teachers at the Faculty of Education in Kirşehir, Turkey. Data were collected from senior class faculty students using 2 scales: The Ways of Coping Scale (WCS) originally developed by Lazarus and Folkman (1984) and adapted into Turkish by Şahin and Durak (1994) and the Scale of Locus of Student Control developed by Miller et al. (1988) and adapted into Turkish by Abaci (1996). Pearson moment correlation was used to analyze the data. Findings showed that there was a noticeable meaningful statistical relation between variables. Findings are discussed based on the literature.

The present study explored the sources of stress and coping strategies of five female first-year university swimmers. The results of group and individual interviews revealed the major sources of stress experienced by our participants were training intensity, high performance expectations, interpersonal relationships, being away from home, and academics. The participants utilized social support, emotional release, and humor/fun as their primary coping responses during the early part of their first year. As the year progressed, cognitive coping responses such as positive reinterpretation and task focus emerged. In addition, important people in the athletic context influenced the participants’ interpretation of stress. The results shed light on the dynamic nature of the coping process and offered support for the transactional model of stress and coping (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984).

One instrument cited in the literature as an effective measure of approaches to coping is the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WAYS; Folkman & Lazarus, 2005 ). This study is a reliability generalization (RG) study of the WAYS that strives to further distill psychometric properties of the scores generated by this measure. Results from this meta-analytic investigation of 130 previously published research studies indicate that the Confrontive Coping and Distancing subscales generate the most variable reliability coefficients across studies. Regression analyses suggest that the variables type of scoring, sample size, population type, sample source, gender homogeneity, and racial homogeneity were most important in determining reliability estimates on the Seeking Social Support, Escape-Avoidance, Planful Problem Solving, and Positive Reappraisal subscales. Implications for the use of the WAYS are offered.

En este texto se revisan algunos de los aspectos planteados en el estudio del estrés, particularmente, desde la concepción de Lazarus y Folkman (1991). Se sostiene que esta aproximación es dualista y que las investigaciones llevadas a cabo desde esta perspectiva emplean criterios morfológicos que no han permitido dar cuenta de aspectos importantes de este fenómeno. Con base en una perspectiva interconductual, se propone tomar en cuenta tres criterios para estudiar este tipo de comportamiento: la naturaleza funcional de la situación, los niveles de aptitud funcional del comportamiento y sus diferentes dimensiones. Se enfatiza el carácter individual de las reacciones de estrés y se sugiere que a partir de los criterios propuestos se elabore una taxonomía de situaciones genéricas para estudiar dichas reacciones, como parte de patrones comportamentales complejos.

Objetivo: identificar as estratégias de enfrentamento/coping utilizadas pela equipe de enfermagem no cuidado ao paciente oncológico e família, em âmbito hospitalar. Método: estudo exploratório descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa, baseado no referencial de Lazarus e Folkman sobre coping. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida com oito integrantes da equipe de enfermagem de uma unidade oncológica hospitalar no oeste catarinense, que responderam a uma entrevista semiestruturada a respeito de seus enfrentamentos/coping no cotidiano de trabalho em oncologia. A análise das informações ocorreu por meio da análise temática. Resultados: apontaram o coping focalizado na emoção: fuga-evitamento e reavaliação positiva e o coping focalizado no problema: resolução planejada, suporte social e autocontrole. Considerações finais: o cotidiano de cuidado em oncologia desperta sofrimento, situação que conduz o desenvolvimento de várias formas de manejo para enfrentar esta realidade e promover adaptação e bem-estar.

Learned resourcefulness theory suggests that people high in resourcefulness can minimize the negative effect of stress on their performance, therefore, they can do better than less resourceful individuals under stressful conditions (Rosenbaum, 1990). This study was designed to examine whether individuals high and low in resourcefulness, differ in their perceived stress levels, self-efficacy expectancies, and coping strategies. In the study, 255 students were asked to imagine themselves in two different stressful academic situations (controllable and uncontrollable) and to complete measures of perceived stress level, self-efficacy expectancy, and coping ways (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988). Data analyses indicated that highly resourceful students have higher self-efficacy expectancies. They use more problem-focused coping, more positive reappraisal, are more likely to seek social support, and less likely to use escape-avoidance strategies during the stages of an examination situation.

Neste estudo se investigou as formas de enfrentamento do estresse e a presença dos sintomas depressivos em 100 indivíduos portadores de retocolite ulcerativa idiopática (RCUI), usuários do Ambulatório de Doenças Inflamatórias do HCFMUSP, que foram comparados com 100 indivíduos acompanhantes de pacientes de outra unidade da mesma instituição, isentos da doença. A metodologia consistiu de aplicar aos dois grupos o Inventário de Estratégias de Enfrentamento de Folkman e Lazarus e o Inventário de Depressão de Beck. As estratégias de enfrentamento mais utilizadas pelo grupo de doentes foram Suporte Social (47%) e Reavaliação Positiva (40%), e no grupo controle ocorreu predomínio da estratégia Reavaliação Positiva (52%). Quanto ao transtorno de humor, 71% dos portadores de RCUI não apresentavam sintomas depressivos (contra 78% do grupo controle), 9% apresentavam disforia (contra 9% do grupo controle) e 20% sintomas depressivos (contra 13% do grupo controle).

Background/Purpose: Little is known about the cognitive appraisal process influencing poststroke depressive symptoms. Based on a framework derived from Lazarus and Folkman (1984), psychometric properties of the Appraisal of Health Scale (AHS) were tested. Methods: Secondary analysis of data from 394 stroke survivors tested internal consistency reliability and construct validity of the AHS, consisting of 3 subscales (threat, benign, benefit). Results: Cronbach’s alphas were satisfactory (threat .92, benign .85, benefit .73). After principal axis factoring, two factors emerged (threat, benefit). Sequential multiple regression accounted for 43% of the variance in depressive symptoms (p < .001), partly explained by the threat and benefit subscales after controlling for depression history, disability, age, social support, self-esteem, and optimism. Conclusion: Threat and benefit AHS subscales demonstrated satisfactory evidence of internal consistency reliability and construct validity in stroke survivors.

<p>Rezultaty radzenia sobie w sytuacjach problemowych można ocenić, analizując reakcje fizjologiczne, czynności motoryczne i objawy emocjonalne. Im efektywniej człowiek radzi sobie w sytuacji problemowej, tym lepsze jest jego funkcjonowanie psychospołeczne. Adekwatność wybranego profilu radzenia sobie wpływa na stan zdrowia somatycznego i psychicznego. Najistotniejszą cechą radzenia sobie powinna być elastyczność – dopasowanie do zmieniających się warunków. Celem badań była ocena socjodemograficznych czynników warunkujących radzenie sobie w sytuacjach trudnych przez personel pielęgniarski. Badaniami objęto 81‒osobową grupę pielęgniarek i pielęgniarzy. Wykorzystano autorską metryczkę dotyczącą socjodemograficznej charakterystyki badanych osób oraz Kwestionariusz radzenia sobie z problemami (WCQ Lazarus i Folkman). Na podstawie wyników badań stwierdzono, że istnieje zależność pomiędzy radzeniem sobie w sytuacjach trudnych przez personel pielęgniarski a miejscem zamieszkania, wiekiem i stażem pracy w zawodzie. Poszczególne strategie radzenia sobie w sytuacjach trudnych badanych osób nie korelują z płcią i wykształceniem.</p>

O estresse tem sido evidenciado de maneira significativa entre os estudantes de Enfermagem. Este artigo descreve uma pesquisa quantitativa, de desenvolvimento metodológico que teve como objetivo construir e validar um instrumento para avaliar os fatores de estresse em estudantes de enfermagem. A construção dos itens baseou-se no modelo de Pasquali e o referencial teórico de estresse foi o de Lazarus e Folkman. O instrumento ficou composto por 30 itens, agrupados em seis domínios: Realização das atividades práticas; Comunicação profissional; Gerenciamento do tempo; Ambiente; Formação profissional; Atividade teórica. A análise fatorial confirmou o modelo conceitual e os domínios propostos. A consistência interna dos domínios estimada pelo alfa de Cronbach variou de 0,71 a 0,87. Foram criados 4 pontos de corte para os escores de cada domínio. O instrumento poderá ser utilizado para avaliar a intensidade dos fatores de estresse entre os estudantes de enfermagem.

RÉSUMÉLes recherches récentes révèlent que l'idéalisation conjugale (mesurée par l'échelle de conventionnalisation conjugale) est le principal déterminant du fardeau que peuvent ressentir les aidants naturels de personnes atteintes de démence. La présente étude corrobore l'existence d'une relation inversement proportionnelle entre ces deux phénomènes. De plus, il semble y avoir peu de relation entre le type de réponses au questionnaire d'enquête et les mesures typiques de désirabilité sociale (aveuglement et gestion des impressions). En outre, la tendance à écarter les expériences négatives de sa vie conjugale semble avoir peu de liens avec la stratégie d'adaptation axée sur les émotions et la résolution de problèmes, tel que cela a été défini dans le modèle phénoménologique cognitif de Lazarus et Folkman. La propension à idéaliser son conjoint et son mariage est étudiée par rappport à la théorie reconstructionniste de la mémoire et de la théorie des échanges sociaux.

Zusammenfassung. Hinsichtlich der Bewältigung des Übergangs in die weiterführende Schule werden in der Literatur differenzielle Entwicklungsverläufe berichtet. Diesbezüglich wird diskutiert, welche Bedeutung die subjektive Antizipation dieses kritischen Lebensereignisses besitzt. Bezug nehmend auf die kognitiv-transaktionale Theorie von Lazarus und Folkman (1987) untersucht die vorliegende Studie die Zusammenhänge zwischen den Einschätzungen gegenüber dem potentiell stresshaften Ereignis (primary und secondary appraisals) und dem Wohlbefinden nach dem Übergang sowie der retrospektiven Bewertung der Übergangserfahrung. Untersucht wird eine Stichprobe von Berliner Schülerinnen und Schülern beim Übergang von der 6. zur 7. Klasse. Mithilfe latenter Regressionsanalysen kann ein Einfluss der Antizipationen unter Berücksichtigung von Kontrollvariablen bestätigt werden. Insbesondere Antizipationen bezüglich der veränderten Leistungsanforderungen an der weiterführenden Schule erweisen sich als prädiktiv für die Bewältigung des Übergangs. Dabei gehen positive Einschätzungen mit einem positiveren Wohlbefinden und einer positiveren Bewertung des Übergangs einher. Grundlagentheoretische und praktische Implikationen der Resultate werden diskutiert.

La pérdida perinatal, genera problemas psicopatológicos en algunas mujeres. Para elaborar el duelo se activan recursos psicológicos, tales como los estilos de afrontamiento. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la relación entre el tipo de afrontamiento y la intensidad del duelo, y conocer los estilos de afrontamiento que resultaron predictores confiables para la intensidad del duelo perinatal. Se realizó un estudio no experimental, transversal, correlacional con 100 mujeres mexicanas que tuvieron pérdida perinatal; se aplicó la Perinatal Grief Scale traducida al español y la Escala de Estilos de Afrontamiento de Lazarus y Folkman. Resultaron predictores confiables de la intensidad del duelo: la edad gestacional del bebé, el tiempo transcurrido desde la pérdida y los estilos de afrontamiento confrontativo, escape-evitación y resolución de problemas. Se concluye que los estilos de afrontamiento impactan en la intensidad del duelo, de ahí la importancia de centrar la intervención psicológica en ellos.

El objetivo de este artículo consistió en determinar las evidencias psicométricas de la escala de afrontamiento en padres de hijos con discapacidad en Lima. El estudio fue un diseño no experimental, transversal y psicométrico. El muestreo fue no probabilístico y a conveniencia de los investigadores con una muestra de 246 padres de tres centros de educación básica especial, en un rango de edades de 20 a 57 años. El desarrollo de validación se desarrolló con la validez fundamentada en el contenido a través de juicio de expertos y evaluación psicométrica en dos estudios. Los resultados presentaron apropiadas evidencias empíricas de validez por estructura interna, basado en “el modelo unidimensional - Centrado en el problema de 10 ítems (SB-X2/gl=1.79, CFI=.92, SRMR=.06, RMSEA=.06)” y una consistencia interna, mediante omega compuesto ω=.79. En conclusión, la escala de afrontamiento para padres de hijos con discapacidad evidenció adecuadas propiedades psicométricas, confirmando la dimensión centrado en el problema de la teoría de Lazarus y Folkman (1986).

O presente estudo tem como objetivos: identificar o estado de ansiedade dos pacientes no período pré-operatório; identificar as estratégias de enfrentamento utilizadas pelos pacientes nesse período; verificar a relação entre o estado de ansiedade e as estratégias de enfrentamento utilizadas pelos pacientes, no período pré-operatório. A amostra foi composta por 40 pacientes cirúrgicos. Para a coleta dos dados foram utilizados dois instrumentos auto-aplicáveis: o questionário de estado de ansiedade de Spielberger e o inventário de estratégias de coping de Lazarus e Folkman. A amostra compôs-se, em sua maioria, por pacientes do sexo feminino com uma idade média de 46 anos, com baixo grau de escolaridade, com experiência cirúrgica anterior e sem intercorrências anteriores. As estratégias de enfrentamento mais comumente utilizadas foram as de suporte social e a de resolução de problemas. Em relação à ansiedade e às estratégias de enfrentamento, obteve-se uma correlação negativa entre o estado de ansiedade e o suporte social e a resolução de problemas.

Introduction: Effective management and prevention of widespread burnout among medical students in Hungary require thorough understanding of its relations to coping strategies, which lacks sufficient data. Aim: To explore the prevalence of burnout and its relations to coping strategies among medical students. Method: Cross-sectional study with 292 participants. Burnout was assessed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey. Coping strategies were evaluated by the Folkman–Lazarus Ways of Coping Questionnaire and questions about health-maintenance behaviours. Associations between burnout and coping strategies were explored with linear regression analyses. Results: The prevalence of high-level burnout was 25–56%. Both problem-focused coping and support-seeking were protective factors of exhaustion and cynicism, however, they predicted reduced personal accomplishment. Emotion-focused coping predicted exhaustion and cynicism and correlated negatively with reduced personal accomplishment. Health-maintenance behaviours were protective factors for exhaustion and predicted reduced personal accomplishment. Conclusions: Deployment of coping strategies that target the most prevalent burnout dimension may improve effective management of burnout.

Objective: to indentify the coping strategies used by nurses of the Operating Room and Recovery Room. Methods: this is a descriptive study, from quantitative approach. Data was collected by inventory of coping strategies of Lazarus and Folkman, which includes thoughts and actions used to deal with external or internal demands of a particular stressor, centralizing in the use of strategies for coping. The results were verified as statistically significant or not, stablishing the level of significance of 5%. Results: it was found that the confrontation and overcoming of stress in the workplace, converged for the pleasure and satisfaction of nurses. As the process is understood as an interactive model, in wich the relations between person and workplace interact constantly, it becomes evident that the adaptation of the human being to the different stress situations is necessary so that the adequate coping happens. Este é um estudo seccional que objetiva verificar a associação entre os modos de enfrentamento das pessoas em hemodiálise crônica e as variáveis sociodemográficas. Foram utilizados um instrumento semiestruturado e o Inventário de Estratégias de Enfrentamento de Folkman e Lazarus. A amostra constituiu-se por 107 adultos, predominantemente do sexo masculino (62,4%), em hemodiálise ambulatorial há mais de seis meses. Os modos de enfrentamento mais referidos foram relacionados ao fator reavaliação positiva (enfrentamento focado na emoção); sendo que os escores médios mais elevados foram para as mulheres em todos os fatores e para as pessoas que expuseram ter companheiro, morar com familiares e ter apoio no tratamento; e foram comuns os maiores escores para os fatores confronto, autocontrole e suporte social. O conhecimento dos modos de enfrentamento prepara o enfermeiro para reforçar ou buscar, junto às pessoas em hemodiálise, a escolha de modos de enfrentamento positivos e propor ações que permitam o desenvolvimento dos mecanismos adaptativos do paciente.

BackgroundMost research on expressed emotion (EE) has used an empirical approach to describe relatives' ways of coping with people with schizophrenia.AimsTo use the stress and coping model proposed by Lazarus and Folkman to examine how relatives coped with patients.MethodPatients with DSM–III–R schizophrenia and their relatives were assessed just after hospitalisation of the patients and nine months after discharge. Both assessments included the symptoms of the patients and the coping strategies, burden, distress and levels of EE of the relatives.ResultsFifty patients and 50 relatives were assessed at inclusion, and 31 patients and 36 relatives at follow-up. Coping strategies were used more frequently at inclusion than at follow-up. Problem-focused coping was the strategy used more often at both assessments. Avoidance coping was strongly associated with burden, distress and high EE at both assessments.ConclusionsWays of coping are influenced by relatives' perceptions of the situation with patients. Avoidance strategies seem to be less effective in regulating the distress of care-givers than problem-focused strategies.

This research sought to better understand how older female spouses cope with a partner’s coronary artery bypass graft surgery and to explore coping’s relationships with life-change stress, cognitive appraisal, resilience, social support, and aspects of spouse’s surgery. A sample of 96 women, aged from 55 to 81 years, completed surveys after their partner’s surgery. Folkman and Lazarus’ ways of coping (WCQ) scales yielded two factors in this sample—reactive coping and adaptive coping. Reactive coping, including more emotion-focused ways of coping from the WCQ, was associated only with more time spent anticipating spouses’ surgeries. Women described the greatest use of ways of coping labeled adaptive, which in turn had significant relationships with greater resilience, social support, and positive appraisal of the surgical experience. Stepwise multiple regression found greater resilience, more frequent religious participation, and fewer children to be distinct predictors of adaptive coping. Nursing staff are encouraged to accept and normalize reactive coping, while facilitating adaptive coping with surgical stresses.

For many children the transition from primary to secondary school is an important event in life. Little is known about children’s concerns and expectations about the new school prior to this transition. Therefore, the present study, which is part of the Vienna School Transition Study (VSTS), investigated this subject. Children ( N = 856) were asked to appraise the transition to secondary school, which was perceived as a challenge and a threat (in terms of transactional stress theory, e.g., Lazarus & Folkman, 1984, 1987). For this purpose a new questionnaire was developed. It was assumed that children would differentiate between the perceived challenge concerning academic achievement and the new social environment, and the perceived threat in the same terms. Results support this assumption. In addition, aspects of self-concept, anxiety, predictability, and academic achievement in primary school were found to be predictors of the perceived threat (with regard to the transition to secondary school) as predicted by theory.

The appearance of a child with a disability is always a source of tremendous stress in the family. This problem is particularly evident in the case of an autistic child because of its unpredictable and untypical development. Every person during their life develops certain mechanisms to deal with difficult situations. According to Lazarus and Folkman (1987), dealing with stress mainly relies on specific intellectual activities and appropriate actions to control the requirements assessed by the person as burdensome or beyond his/her current possibilities. There are many ways of dealing with stress. The most common strategies include those focused on solving the problem (SSZ), emotional overreaction (SSE) and avoidance of stress (SSU) by engaging in substitute activities (ACZ) or seeking social interaction (CSA). It is assumed that an effective way to deal with stress consists in relating the needs and capabilities of an individual. The aim of this article was to investigate the ways of dealing with stress among 130 parents of autistic children.

<p>El presente estudio analiza las características psicológicas de un grupo de 26 conciliadores de la ciudad de Arequipa. Para ello se ha evaluado la personalidad con el Inventario de Personalidad de Eysenck, los estilos de afrontamiento con el Cuestionario de Modos de Afrontamiento de Lazarus y Folkman, la inteligencia emocional con el Cuestionario de Inteligencia Emocional y para valorar algunas manifestaciones clínicas de la personalidad se utilizó el MINI-MULT. Los resultados indican que los conciliadores de Arequipa tienen un tipo de personalidad sanguíneo de manera predominante, inteligencia emocional es superior, y usan la Confrontación, la Aceptación de la responsabilidad y el Distanciamiento como estilos de afrontamiento preferentes. No se hallaron manifestaciones clínicas significativas. Se encontraron también diversas relaciones entre las variables, como entre Neuroticismo y algunos estilos de afrontamiento, entre Extroversión e Inteligencia Emocional, Inteligencia Emocional y Autocontrol, entre Autocontrol y Aceptación de la propia responsabilidad, entre Distanciamiento y Evitación, entre la Planificación y la Revaluación positiva.</p>

Whether people cope differently with negative events at different ages was assessed by relation to age by type of situation perceived as potentially stressful and by type of coping strategy used, and also whether the kind of coping strategy used to reduce the potential stressor was related to type of stressor. To do this the factor structure of the Spanish version of the Ways of Coping Checklist of Lazarus and Folkman was examined in an Argentine sample of 153. The factor analysis of checklist scores identified five factors: Cognitive redefinition, Problem focus, Seeking social support, Wishful thinking, and Avoidance. For two groups, ages 20 to 24 and 40 to 45 years, analysis indicated a significant association of type of situation perceived as potentially stressful with age. The middle-age group (40–45 yr.) chose a way of coping in problem solution but the young adult group (20–24 yr.) seemed more often to elude problems. It appears that the type of stressor influences type of coping.

The empirical results of the research devoted to the problem of coping behavior with stressful and the pandemic situations among youth (n=100) are discussed. The instruments are the following: Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (Endler N.S., Parker J.D.A.) and Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Lazarus R., Folkman S.). The problem-oriented coping style is predominant among participants aged 17-31. Significant differences in coping strategies related to pandemic between the respondents who have been exposed to COVID-19 and respondents who were not infected with COVID-19 were not found (p>0.50). Respondents who have been exposed to COVID-19 demonstrated social avoidance style in stressful situations (p=0.021). The structure of coping behavior in group of participants who have been exposed to a new coronovirus infection included a greater number of correlations between stable coping styles and strategies for overcoming the pandemic situation. The female respondents demonstrated higher rate of avoidance behaviour and tend to seek social support more often than male respondents.

El estrés psicosocial es una relación particular entre el individuo y el entorno, que es evaluado como amenazante o desbordante de sus recursos y que pone en peligro su bienestar (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Estos autores también mencionan que su manejo depende de los recursos con los que cuenten las personas. En el caso de los pacientescon alguna enfermedad crónica Taylor (2007) refiere que los recursos de afrontamiento pueden ser confrontativos o evitativos. Se trabajó con 84 personas diagnosticadas con cáncer y que acuden a consulta a un centro oncológico del estado de México, se aplicó el Instrumento de Acontecimientos Productores del Estrés de Caballo y el de estrategias de afrontamiento. De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos los acontecimientos de agresión física o ambiental correlacionan positivamente con la estrategia de afrontamiento de planeación y afrontamiento activo, aceptación y evasión. Los acontecimientos de muerte o problemas de salud correlacionan positivamente con planeación y afrontamiento activo, apoyo social, aceptación y evasión.
