Mitchell Neilsen
The Biosecurity Research Institute (BRI) facility at Kansas State University is a huge biocontainment facility to conduct research on infectious diseases that pose a threat to plant, animal and human health. The BRI Training and Education Program is currently offline; i.e., classroom sessions are taken to provide this training and education. The objective behind taking up this project was to move the entire training and education module of Biosecurity Research Institute online, instead of having a classroom session for each training course, with an subject matter expert (SME) to come and take the training session. The aim is to develop an online training system which is synchronized with the information in the BRI Research Project Database. The employees will only have to login to the website, scroll through the list of courses they are enrolled in, take the courses, write the assignments/quizzes assigned to the course and then submit the quizzes. They can also self-enroll themselves into courses, if they are given the permission to do so. The SME’s of the courses can create new courses, upload the course materials, enroll users into the courses, and assign deadlines to course completion. Once the student submits the course quiz or assignments, the SME’s can grade the quiz, assign a final grade to the students, and give feedback on their performance. They can even reassign the course in case of poor performance by the student. The administrators of the website can assign roles to different personnel, give permissions according to need and requirement, add/delete courses, and change the appearance of the website. The project is to be done using a Learning Management System called Moodle. Moodle (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an online learning management system designed to allow interaction between teachers and students. The back-end database used is SQL Server 2008 R2 and additional tools used are Adobe Presenter (with Microsoft Power Point 2010) to create the courses in SCORM format.

Resumen
This thesis has conducted interpretive qualitative research to investigate the impacts and limitations of LMS Moodle in distance students’ learning process from distance students’ perspectives. The qualitative data was collected from mediated semi-structured interviews with distance students participating in a Master program at Linnaeus University. Through empirical findings and analysis, the positive experiences and limitations of using Moodle in facilitating distance learning process have been revealed from distance students’ perspectives. The positive experiences include that LMS Moodle was used by distance students for interacting with other students, teachers and accessing study contents during their distance learning process. Moodle was used to know new classmates, teachers and the new learning system, recruit group members for the collaborative works, communicate with teachers and other classmates, and obtain significant information about courses. Especially, accessing study contents in Moodle easily was critical for distance students' learning. However, there were still some limitations. Distance students preferred Facebook to Moodle for student-student interaction during the process of collaborative works. The interaction with teachers was not adequate and timely for distance students. The limitations also include unsatisfactory Moodle interface design and poor usability of Moodle.   Some suggestions about improving LMS Moodle in different ways had also been acquired from the research. The suggestions from distance students mainly focus on integrating Moodle with other web conferencing platforms for improving the quality of student-student, student-teacher interaction in Moodle, ameliorating the interface design of Moodle, and adding Moodle tutorials. The result will help the development of LMS based on distance students' needs and finally benefit distance students' learning process.

Resumen
When learning mathematics, deaf children of primary school age experience difficulties due to their disability. In Jordan, little research has been undertaken to understand the problems facing deaf children and their teachers. Frequently, children are educated in special schools for the deaf; the majority of deaf children tend not to be integrated into mainstream education although efforts are made to incorporate them into the system. Teachers in the main stream education system rarely have knowledge and experience to enable deaf students to reach their full potential. The methodological approach used in this research is a mixed one consisting of action research and Human Computer interaction (HCI) research. The target group was deaf children aged nine years (at the third grade) and their teachers in Jordanian schools. Mathematics was chosen as the main focus of this study because it is a universal subject with its own concepts and rules and at this level the teachers in the school have sufficient knowledge and experience to teach mathematics topics competently. In order to obtain a better understanding of the problems faced by teachers and the deaf children in learning mathematics, semi-structured interviews were undertaken and questionnaires distributed to teachers. The main aim at that stage of research was to explore the current use and status of the e-learning environment and LMS within the Jordanian schools for the deaf in Jordan. In later stages of this research, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used again to ascertain the effectiveness, usability and readiness of the adopted e-learning environment “Moodle. Finally pre-tests and post-tests used to assess the effectiveness of the e-learning environment and LMS. It is important to note that it was not intended to work with the children directly but were used as test subjects. Based on the requirements and recommendations of the teachers of the deaf, a key requirements scheme was developed. Four open source e-learning environments and LMS evaluated against the developed key requirements. The evaluation was based on a software engineering approache. The outcome of that evaluation was the adoption of an open source e-learning environment and LMS called “Moodle”. Moodle was presented to the teachers for the purpose of testing it. It was found it is the most suitable e-learning environment and LMS to be adapted for use by deaf children in Jordan based on the teachers requirements. Then Moodle was presented to the deaf children’s to use during this research. After use, the activities of the deaf and their teachers were used and analysed in terms of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) analysis. The analysis includes the readiness, usability, user satisfaction, ease of use, learnability, outcome/future use, content, collaboration & communication tools and functionality.

Resumen
This study investigates existing learning management systems practices, in this case Canvas and Moodle in relation to user personalization and students’ learning styles as both factors are closely contribute to the design of a meaningful learning experience for learners. With the expansion of these teaching tools and methods, it seems crucial to determine to what extent they actually serve the learner and what role is really given to the student using these online platforms. Factors such as instructors’ feedback, peer communication, learning objects and follow-up will be examined. This study is anchored in a Swedish academic setting, and aims to provide a comprehensive overview of learners' needs, expectations, and preferences to benefit educational institutions as well as LMS developers. The goal is to assess how such factors play an essential role in the personalization of learning tools and to suggest that their consideration can lead to the development of more intuitive LMS platforms that do not solely rely on content uploaded by teachers, but that can in turn potentially offer relevant content tailored to each user.

Management professionals at many colleges are transitioning to new learning management systems (LMS), such as Moodle, for reasons such as lower costs, greater outreach, and student preference. Transitioning to a new LMS may result in faculty problems with learning a new technology platform in addition to teaching. The purpose of this study was to explore the impact that an LMS transition had on faculty attitudes, experiences, and workload. The conceptual framework of the study was the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology and the diffusion of innovation theory. A phenomenological design was employed with a purposeful sample of 13 faculty who had transitioned a course from Blackboard to Moodle during 2009-2013. Interview data were analyzed through open coding, resulting in 7 emergent themes: time, stability, usability of features, preparation, support, support staff, and benefits. These themes were substantiated by observation of member checking and use of an external auditor. Results indicated that when faculty were required to transition to a new LMS, there were impacts to their workload such as extra time requirements for course development, learning the new LMS, delivering instruction, and technology training. All 13 faculty expressed a need for additional support in the form of either a course release, compensation, or mentoring. Administrators who apply these findings may influence positive social change through a better understanding of the complexity of an LMS transition. This new knowledge may result in increased alignment between administration and faculty, improvement of the student's experience, and improved faculty job satisfaction.

The traditional teaching methods of the Learning Management Systems (or LMS) are rigid in nature and impose limitations on the teaching process. By having a closed pattern, these tools end up hurting the student, for preventing it from interacting with anyone who shares the same interests as him. For example, the student posts a question about a particular topic in the forum and sometimes wait days, weeks, without getting any return. As a result, the concepts of community, relationship and interaction between users are required to overcome these limitations. Currently Moodle does not provide tools that support the creation of a social network that can be articulated by the participants. The purpose of this study is to develop a social software that enables the creation and articulation of online social networking in Moodle automatically. From this, it is expected that each student can have your own space, with virtual communities of practice specific to their needs, and he can also at any time add new people to these communities, they are everywhere, that is, in any Moodle course, group or forum, extending beyond social networking, the educational possibilities that only collaborative learning provides

The increasing use of digital technologies in people's daily lives has generated a number of behavioral changes; collaborative tendencies of exchange and sharing of information, ideas, knowledge and material goods integrate not only the social life of internet users, but also arise in the school and work environment, mediated by different interfaces and digital devices. In this sense, this research aims to understand how the tools that have emerged from the use of the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) have driven or facilitated Internet user’s collaboration, addressing the main aspects and needs of collaboration in virtual environments, relating them to interface design topics. The main objective of the study is to propose interface elements that, integrated to the interface of learning management systems (LMS), promote the accomplishment of collaborative activities To do so, after a literature review and the analysis of interfaces with collaborative functions, an analysis of Moodle's collaborative tools was carried out considering the mechanisms of conversation, coordination and awareness (PREECE; ROGERS; SHARP, 2005). Then, a questionnaire was applied with professors from the design area regarding the use of Moodle and/or other digital technologies in collaborative activities with their students. The results of this stage were discussed in a workshop with design experts, in order to evaluate the possibilities of implementing graphic elements and computational tools in Moodle's interface that could facilitate user's collaboration. These procedures have generated a set of needs, requirements, interface elements and functionalities to facilitate collaboration processes in learning management systems and/or other digital platforms.

Resumen
Problem Statement: The implementation and use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) has been ascribed as a transformative drive across the world, especially to improve the human capacity development of individuals in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs). However, developing countries are still struggling to harness the productive capacity of their ICT resources. The ICT index of ‘access, use and skills’ in developing countries is less than 50%, whilst that for developed countries is above 75%. Whilst HEIs have incorporated ICTs, the uptake of the Learning Management Systems (LMS) is low, with the expected objectives remaining largely unachieved and the full potential of the technologies not realised. A myriad of challenges have contributed to the low uptake of ICT projects in resource-limited settings ranging from limited ICT expertise, cost and complexity of implementation, inadequate training, lack of top management support, poor organisational culture, limited infrastructure and resistance to change. Whilst these challenges play a significant role in limiting uptake, the role of user resistance to LMS implementation in HEIs has not been fully explored. Purpose of study: This study offered an explanatory critique of user resistance and its implications on low uptake of LMS in HEIs. The objective was to examine how resistance behaviours manifested from lecturers during implementation of an LMS in an HEI of a developing country context. The study identified different forms of lecturer resistance behaviours and examined how they manifested to cause low uptake of the LMS. It also analysed the nature of responses and/or strategies from management and ICT implementers towards the lecturer resistance behaviours during LMS implementation. Furthermore, the study examined how contextual factors influenced manifestation of resistance practices in relation to habitus, capital and field positions of lecturers, management and ICT implementers. Research methodology: The study adopted an interpretive research paradigm and drew on Bourdieu`s Theory of Practice (TOP) framework and the Multilevel Model of Resistance to Information Technology Implementation (MRITI) as theoretical lens, to analyse the manifestation, interaction and logic of user resistance towards LMS implementation in HEIs. The study analysed data from semi-structured interviews and project documents to highlight issues of incorporating ICTs into teaching and learning. More data and field notes came from participant observations during the implementation of the LMS (Moodle). The case of Omega University in Zimbabwe was used as a representation of an HEI in a developing country context. Key findings: User resistance affected the implementation and uptake of Moodle. The different forms of resistance behaviours that manifested from lecturers during Moodle implementation were disinterest, minimal use, refusal to use, pessimism, withdrawal, avoidance, prioritisation and delegation. The forms were classified into four episodes; apathy, passive resistance, covert resistance and active resistance. Aggressive forms of resistance were not found in this study. Delegation of responsibilities was a unique form in that it falsified and misrepresented acceptance of Moodle despite harbouring resistance tendencies; like two sides of the same coin. Resistance behaviours manifested during Moodle implementation due to initial conditions that interacted with objects and triggers of resistance to generate perceived threats in lecturers. Initial conditions were Omega`s management model, its ICT structure and ICT culture, whilst the objects of lecturer`s resistance were mostly towards ‘Moodle advocates’ and less towards ‘Moodle features’ or ‘Moodle significance’. Therefore, lecturer resistance behaviours were directed towards external rather than internal factors with regard to the LMS. The triggers of lecturer resistance were grouped into management, infrastructure and personal triggers. Perceived threats from lecturers were either fear of loss of relevance, status, jobs or increased workloads. The positive responses and/or strategies from management and ICT implementers were acknowledgment, reward innovation, rectification, effective training and user consultations, whilst the negative responses were inaction, dissuasion, enforcement, no reward for innovation, ineffective training, and absence of change management. Due to other underlying contextual factors, the nature of these responses neither reduced lecturer resistance nor enhanced the low uptake of Moodle. Contextual factors in form of differences in habitus and forms of capital influenced lecturer resistance as well as practices of management and ICT implementers during Moodle implementation. Lecturer resistance was caused by the following habitus: prior exposure to technology, age-related habitus, technophobia and pedagogical beliefs and the following forms of capital: qualifications, position, academic titles and employment status. The practices of management and ICT implementers were driven by the habitus of implementing, supporting, training of ICT projects, providing ICT infrastructure as well as developing and enforcing ICT policies. The following forms of capital motivated management and ICT implementers` practices: prestige, honour, level of Moodle expertise and university positions. Contribution of the study: The study contributed to knowledge, theory and practice. First, the study provided a deeper conceptualisation of user resistance towards the implementation of ICT projects and suggested theoretical propositions to explain how lecturer resistance manifested during the implementation of LMS in HEIs. Second, the study developed a unified conceptual framework by integrating Bourdieu`s TOP and MRITI to explain resistance practices during LMS implementation in HEIs. Third, the study provided recommendations for managers and ICT implementers in Zimbabwean HEIs and similar contextual settings, to address user resistance issues by creating effective responses and strategies aimed at improving the design, implementation and uptake of LMS in HEIs. Additionally, recommendations were provided for HEIs who wish to achieve ‘technological determinism’ and/or ‘techno-centrism’, to implement policies that equip intended technology users with all the knowledge components of TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge). Finally, technology implementers should resolve exogenous issues in the institution before system implementation to avoid users directing focus on endogenous factors. This intervention and understanding may lead to the realisation of the full potential of ICT projects and achievement of expected objectives in HEIs of developing countries.

Resumen
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The decline in the Grade 12 pass rate in South Africa has been a cause for widespread concern. While this decline in is the result of the interplay of many factors, one of them is undoubtedly that teachers and pupils often find themselves in situations where they do not have access to adequate resources. This study is a formative evaluation of material that was created with the Moodle learning management system, in order to provide teachers and learners with resources that can be made readily available online. These resources are accessible from computers and cellular phones with internet connectivity. The resources not only provide content, but also learning activities that can be used either by individual learners, or with a teacher in a classroom environment. In the absence of a teacher, the activities could also provide meaningful feedback to aid learners in the learning process. Two courses were created in the Moodle Learning Management System that cover work prescribed for Grade 12, English First Additional Language for the period 2009 to 2010; namely the prescribed short stories and the play, Nothing But The Truth by John Kani. A number of activities are evaluated according to usage and feedback that they provide. The outcome of the study is that it is possible to provide learners with online learning materials which will enable them to prepare thoroughly for the final examinations.

in 2009 Summer School and 2009-2010 Fall Semesters was evaluated. The course was given in blended form, i.e. face to face lessons and online instructional activities were performed together. In the web based part of the course, several educational modules of an open source learning management system (LMS), such as quizzes, forums, lesson pages, wiki pages, mail interface etc. were used. The students were responsible for implementing an educational course site on the LMS platform, using the course curriculum applications. Within the scope of this thesis, the perceptions of the students about course-related projects, and online and classroom activities were investigated through interviews and questionnaires. The academic development of students was also considered in the study. Additionally, several informal interviews were also done with the instructor of the course in order to investigate his perceptions about the conduct of the course. Questionnaire results have been analyzed quantitatively and face to face interview results have been analyzed qualitatively. Both quantitative and qualitative data indicated that the students&rsquo
perceptions about how the course was conducted and the learning by design activities were generally positive. Especially the project work, which was assigned as a requisite of the learning by design method, was pointed out as a positive factor in students'
learning of the subject matter both in the questionnaires and in the face to face interviews. Another important finding of the interview and questionnaire results was that the communication between the instructor and the students contributed positively to not only learning the course content but the quality of the projects as well. As an outcome of this study, many important factors, which lead to successful results in implementation of learning by design method in a web based environment, have been identified. These results are presented in detail in the '
Discussion and Recommendations'
section.

Programming usually includes the use of a computer and a text editor, yet programming courses given at institutions of higher education often conclude with traditional written exams to assess the students’ acquired practical knowledge. This traditional examination method restricts the complexity of programming problems and may result in unintentional subjective assessments. Previous research on computer-based programming exams that mimic real programming conditions suggest that the assessment of the students’ acquired knowledge can be made more efficient while also simplifying both grading and administration processes. We use Bunge’s general scientific method and case study methodology to develop a system for computer-based programming exams that can be implemented at KTH Kista. Our results suggest that programming exams can be safely performed on the students’ own computers by booting the computer into a restricted preconfigured system environment with blocked Internet access from a usb flash drive. Paired with the open-source learning management system Moodle, the exams can be administered electronically and designed with automatic grading processes. To help exam invigilators we also developed an observation tool that can detect if the restricted system environment is circumvented. Despite the lack of real tests of the system due to the circumstances caused by the ongoing pandemic, we conclude, with the support of previous studies, that our proposed solution for computer-based programming exams can improve the quality and efficiency of programming courses and their examination processes.

A popularidade desses sites é indiscutível.
Social networking sites are great tools for aggregating and bringing people together, in the sense that they offer various forms of interaction, providing its participants the ease of communication and the ability to create discussions, comments and share resources they find relevant. The popularity of these sites is undeniable. Having thousands of new users every day, they attract especially younger people who often come to incorporate them into their daily life and use them to discuss various themes. Therefore, many researchers have dedicated themselves to investigate whether the use of these sites in the context of formal education would be beneficial. Although these studies are still fairly recent, this work defends the idea that social network sites have great potential to expand education beyond the classroom and they can be used effectively to develop a culture of learning. The objective of this work is to present a mechanism that integrates Moodle with distinct social network sites (such as Facebook and Twitter). From this mechanism, the professors have a new way to communicate with their students and the students can use a familiar and attractive tool and, possibly, become more participative in the learning process.

This dissertation discusses the use of the social network site Facebook as a virtual environment for interaction and learning in Distance Education (DE). Its main objective is to contribute to the educational process of DE. As a conceptual reference, this work builds on the three main types of interaction in DE proposed by Michael Moore (Moore; Kearsley, 2001): student-instructor, student-student, and student-content. As methodology, it performs a bibliographic review of national and international surveys comparing the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Blackboard and Moodle, with the use of Facebook in DE. It also analyzes the results of the literature and brings together the data systematically, thereby facilitating future research on the topic. In addition, it synthesizes and describes the results of the review in order to ascertain whether the use of Facebook may or may not enhance education as an interaction and learning environment. It concludes that the use of Facebook as an interaction environment is significantly well accepted by students, particularly on the forms of student-instructor and student-student interaction, while LMS still contribute adequately to the individualized study, or student-content interaction. So, social networking sites can significantly contribute to the teaching of DE

Digitalization has spread into all parts of our lives including shopping, staying in touch with friends and watching cat videos from the cat island in Japan. Studies have shown that digitalization can also have a huge benefit for educational purposes via Learning Management Systems (LMS). The purpose of the study is to describe and create an understanding how learning institutions all across the globe can further improve the usability of their LMS, with a specific focus on the students perspective on the systems usability. Quantitative and qualitative material from a case study was analyzed and compared with previous related studies and to theories from the literature study. The results of the study showed that there is great potential for learning institutions to improve the usability of their LMS by relatively simple means, in many cases using their own students as a resource for improving their education. The study also showed there can be major differences in how students perceive the usability of an LMS, which can have disruptive effects if not addressed properly.

The increasing demand for World Wide Web (Web) based courses has imposed some challenges in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) field, in particular when considering the education supported by the Web. One of the emerging needs of education supported by the Web is related to the Learning Objects (LO) usage inside Learning Management Systems (LMS). Besides production of \"good quality\" LO, it must be provided efficient methods concerning their storage and dissemination. However, some difficulties have been reported by teachers of Web based courses: \"expensive costs\" for LO authoring; lack of tools for sharing these materials; and negative practical experiences for reusing them in an LMS. Some proposals to mitigate these problems have been the development of Learning Object Repository (LOR) tools, mainly in order to facilitate the dissemination of LO. Despite the progress already achieved, there are still several barriers for their adoption by teachers such as lack of easy integration between LMS environment and LOR. In general, current integrations are not simple for typical users. In this context, the target of this project is to presents an innovative LOR, the Interactive Repository of Digital Contents - iRepository. Its model provides seamless integration with a particular LMS and offers several resources to help teaching and learning processes, such as registry of LO educational effectiveness. As a practical contribution, the fundamentals of iRepository model were implemented for an specific LMS, the Moodle system. Besides promoting LO sharing among courses and users, it provides resources to other Moodle component, the Interactive Assignment - iAssign, for storage, classification e searching of LO, or even ease management of Interactive Learning Module (iLM).

This thesis contributes to support learning in Technology Enhanced Learning environment in order to improve the learning process. In a context where we do not have profiles to adapt learning, we have opted for learner-directed learning under the constraints defined by the teacher. We developed to teachers a model to design multi-scenario course. The model inspired on the Competence-based Knowledge Space Theory to which 3 extensions are added to correct its weaknesses in a context of initial or lifelong training. The model is based on learning objectives and prerequisite relationships among them to produce multiple scenarios in a reasonable time. A survey of teachers shows a priori an acceptability of the model. We allow learner to co-construct his scenario during the learning. Co-construction results from the fact that the scenario must respect constraints defined by the teacher to avoid illogical choices that may lead to failure or even dropout. The learning process is based on the choice and change of objectives to achieve and activities to do. A survey of learners shows a priori acceptability of the model. The models are implemented as an integrable plugin in Moodle. An experiment with the teachers allowed them to detect inconsistencies and deficiencies in their courses. We observed a variety of scenarios built by the students

Zhang, Aixiu (Monica). "Transactional Distance in Web-based College Learning Environments: Toward Measurement and Theory Construction". VCU Scholars Compass, 2003. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd_retro/94.

Texto completo
Resumen
Michael Moore's theory of transactional distance, developed in the age of correspondence schools, contributed greatly to theory building in distance education. The theory needs revision, however, when applied to web-based learning environments, specifically by defining transactional distance to include students' relationships with other elements in the learning environment that prohibit their active engagement with learning. The new theoretical model of transactional distance has four dimensions: transactional distance between student and student (TDSS), transactional distance between student and teacher (TDST), transactional distance between student and content (TDSC), and transactional distance between student and interface: online course management system (TDSI). A preliminary item pool of more than 200 items to measure the constructs of TD, TDST, TDSS, TDSC, and TDSI was generated and sent to a panel of experts for review. Items that the reviewers considered weak or very weak in terms of relevance to the constructs and/or clarity and conciseness were eliminated. After a pilot test and further revisions, the proposed scale of transactional distance was administered to a sample of 100 college students. Confirmatory factor analyses and exploratory analyses indicated that the measurement models, especially after modifications, possessed good fit for the data, and the modified scales possessed factorial validity. Reliability analyses indicated that the scales possessed strong internal consistency, with Cronbach alpha coefficients ranging from 0.8169 to 0.9530. Structural equation modeling procedures tested for the causal relationship between the four dimensions and students' general sense of transactional distance in web-based courses. Results indicate that the proposed model of transactional distance is acceptable. The strongest factor that affected students' sense of transactional distance and engagement with learning was found to be transactional distance between student and students (TDSS), followed by transactional distance between student and teacher (TDST), and then by transactional distance between student and content (TDSC). The findings have implications for the development of a revised theory of transactional distance in online education, and provide strong support for constructivist learning theories and social learning theories, reinforcing the importance of establishing learning communities in online learning environments.

Resumen

Nowadays many universities in the world apply technology enhanced learning in order to help students. Due to potentials that technology enhanced learning offers, nowadays education in all contexts is using it and universities in particular are trying to apply it. One such case is the University of Prishtina in Kosova that is subject of this thesis.

University of Prishtina as the only public university in Kosova faces challenges when it comes to introduction of technology enhanced learning. Such a case is an initiative of one of the teachers that is called eMesimi. eMesimi is an e-learning system based on Moodle software that is used for offering courses for students in University of Prishtina since 2005. The idea of this research is to investigate students’ experiences using this system, combined with teachers’ opinion regarding the implementation of full scale e-learning system.

For this purpose the research was led using the octagonal theoretical model for e-learning. The eight factors in this model have then been grouped in three major domains: educational, technological and organizational.

This theoretical model was followed with empirical study using a questionnaire and mail interviews as data collection techniques. The questionnaire data have been collected from 60 students and have targeted issues regarding the educational and technology domain. The mail interviews where conducted with two teachers and addressed all domains, but the technological domain was addressed more from an attitude and requirements perspective. This approach was needed because none of the interviewed teachers have had previous experience with an e-learning system.

The analysis of the data shows generally positive attitude among students for an e-learning system, while teachers’ answers raise some important issues that should be taken into consideration while implementing e-learning system.

Resumen
The relatively new utilization of learning management system (LMS) facilitated blended learning in secondary public schools has grown in popularity, but there is a void in research at this level. Teachers learned how to use the LMS features and honed their blended learning design skills through their own experiences, and in observation of their students' experiences. In this study, the knowledge teachers built and the decisions they made while designing blended learning were explored. In this mixed-methods study, the quantitative and qualitative results aligned, indicating that teachers design courses using a variety of components, often in different ways. Six themes emerged. The relationships between themes were used to create a theoretical visual of the factors impacting secondary teachers' decisions in the design of LMS-facilitated blended learning. Teacher design decisions were focused on the impact their choices would have on students. Variation in course design was purposely used by teachers to differentiate for students individually; however, variation was also the result of design challenges blocking teachers from a specific design choice. The implications for practice primarily focus on removing the design challenges. The results of this study add to other foundational studies to begin to fill the research gap in the area of LMS-facilitated blended learning design in secondary schools.

E-Learning is a process in which we use the electronic medium to access the defined set of applications and processes. With its increasing identification and recognition in academic and corporate world, a unique model or framework is required. E-Learning is a critical support mechanism for educational institutions to grow the performance of their students, teachers, as well as useful for organizations to enhance the performance of their employees. Semantic web represents a potential technology for realizing e-Learning requirements Research works in the field of e-Learning are represented by a wide range of applications, ranged from virtual classrooms to remote courses or distance learning. However, studies show that still it demands more effective approach. Ontology is a specification of conceptualization; the object, process, and other entities that are involved in making of the framework for E-learning. This thesis presents the ontology for E-learning process, such as course syllabus, teaching methods, learning activities and learning styles
Data storage is an important practice for organisations that want to track their progress. The evolution of data storage technologies from manual methods of storing data on paper or in spreadsheets, to the automated methods of using computers to automatically log data into databases or text files has brought an amount of data that is beyond the level of human interpretation and comprehension. One way of addressing this issue of interpreting large amounts of data is data visualisation, which aims to convert abstract data into images that are easy to interpret. However, people often have difficulty in selecting an appropriate visualisation tool and visualisation techniques that can effectively visualise their data. This research proposes the processes that can be followed to effectively visualise data. Data logged from a mobile learning system is visualised as a proof of concept to show how the proposed processes can be followed during data visualisation. These processes are summarised into a model that consists of three main components: the data, the visualisation techniques and the visualisation tool. There are two main contributions in this research: the model to visualise mobile learning usage data and the visualisation of the usage data logged from a mobile learning system. The mobile learning system usage data was visualised to demonstrate how students used the mobile learning system. Visualisation of the usage data helped to convert the data into images (charts and graphs) that were easy to interpret. The evaluation results indicated that the proposed process and resulting visualisation techniques and tool assisted users in effectively and efficiently interpreting large volumes of mobile learning system usage data.

Resumen
Enrollment in full-time, virtual, K-12 schools is increasing while mathematics performance in these institutions is lacking compared to national averages. Scholarly literature lacks research studies using learning analytics to better predict student outcomes via student learning management system (LMS) interactions, specifically in the low performing area of middle school mathematics. The theoretical framework for this study was a combination of Hrastinski's theory of online learning as online participation and Moore's 3 types of interactions model of online student behavior. The purpose of this study was to address the current research gap in the full-time, K-12 eLearning field and determine whether 2 types of student LMS interactions could predict mathematics course performance. The research questions were developed to determine whether student clicks navigating course content page(s) or the number of times a student accessed resources predicted student performance in a full-time, virtual, mathematics course after student demographic variables were controlled for. This quantitative study used archived data from 238 seventh grade Math 7B students enrolled from January 8th-10th to May 22nd-25th in two Midwestern, virtual, K-12 schools. Hierarchical regressions were used to test the 2 research questions. Student clicks navigating the course content pages were found to predict student performance after the effects of student demographic covariates were controlled for. Similarly, the number of times a student accessed resources also predicted student performance. The findings from this study can be used to advise actionable changes in student support, build informative student activity dashboards, and predict student outcomes for a more insightful, data-driven, learning experience in the future.

In this thesis, our objective is to enable businesses looking to enhance their product by varying its attributes, where effectiveness of the new product is assessed by humans. To achieve this, we mapped the task to a machine learning problem. The solution is two fold: learn a non linear model that can map the attribute space to the human response, which can then be used to make predictions, and an active learning strategy that enables learning this model incrementally. We developed a system called Continuous active learning system (COAL).

Resumen
Bibliography: pages 150-158.
Health care systems all over the world are in crisis. The presenting symptom is a cost spiral that is out of control. Money supply is finite, and if this problem continues the system will eventually collapse. There are a number of causes associated with the problem that are usually analysed by reduction, an approach based upon an assumption of simple linear causal relations. This study shows the problem to be the dialectic opposite, in other words these problems are all interrelated through complex causal interactions. Therefore, the health care system is a complex social system and solutions to its problems may be found in terms of the interactions in such a system. An investigation into the history of the health care system shows that the system started with a simple one on one interaction between patients and physicians. At the time of its initiation, very little empirical knowledge was available about illness. After the renaissance, this changed dramatically with a subsequent increase in the ability to diagnose, but also in the complexity to treat illness. However, modern beliefs about illness and illness processes do not reflect the complexity of this knowledge. Beliefs about both illness and knowledge contribute to the process of diagnosis (medical decision making, or problem solving). Furthermore, the expectations, wants, and needs of patients and physicians, as well as the decision environment, increases the complexity and difficulty of this decision making process. These decisions initiate treatment processes that are ultimately represented in the health care system as cost. Therefore, the patient-physician system as the simplest initial interaction is an event that ultimately affects cost. This system is not functioning efficiently at present and a system of inquiry that can improve it may make a contribution to an improved system, and therefore a saving in cost. Altering the diagnostic system from a linear into a circular process, in other words into a learning system, improves both decision making and the use of knowledge. However, an inquiring system is needed in addition that can enhance the rigour of this process. Charles West Churchman devoted a large part of his work to knowledge and the way we acquire knowledge, in other words inquiring systems. His belief is that problem solving ought to be approached in a comprehensive way in order to minimise the risk for making incorrect decisions. Furthermore, because decisions are made upon incomplete information, the solutions will be the cause of new problems. Therefore, problem solving is a never ending cycle of learning. In order to have as complete information as possible about the problem, we have to: know the history of the problem, take a broad view that includes the environment of the problem (use a systems approach), and consider all the alternative solutions to the problem. Virtually all of our knowledge is based upon underlying assumptions. In order to test the validity of the knowledge we use for inquiry and decision making, it is important to test the assumptions upon which the knowledge is based. This is valid in regard to empirical knowledge as well. Finally, according to Churchman, decision making has to be ethical. Therefore, we have to do all we can to ensure that the implementation of the decision will improve the situation, not only now, but also in the future. The application of Churchman's approach to the patient-physician interaction, assists in the synthesis of a more comprehensive world view of health care and illness. This study shows that this leads to important changes in the negative interactions identified as contributing to the health care crisis. In terms of Churchman's approach, the role of physicians can be seen as managers of illness. Their purpose is therefore to plan for the improvement of illness (the problem) in an ethical way. Such planning should include the values of patients in deciding upon appropriate treatment. It is the submission of this study that only a methodology that is able to address complex human systems, such as a systems approach, and a comprehensive philosophy of inquiry, such as that of C West Churchman is appropriate to address the current problems of the health care system.

Resumen
The use of Learning Management Systems (LMSs) in higher education institutions is not a new tendency. Although this is an innovative way of implementing e-learning in the educational process, there are a few problems concerning these systems. Educators tend to apply traditional classroom ideas and pedagogy in computer-supported e-learning environments, assuming that because these environments allow the interaction that we see in the classroom, traditional pedagogy can be used. Although most of the pedagogical principles that apply to the traditional classroom-delivery method also apply to e-learning, the e-environment supports such interactions in a different manner. Traditional pedagogical principles should be adapted to accommodate the e-learning environment and should form the very basis for inclusion of features in LMSs. These principles should be integrated into the LMS where every feature included is accompanied by explicit guidelines on how to use the feature in such a way that it will effect pedagogically sound instruction. The aim of this study is to determine how an LMS could be used in order to enhance self-directed learning. In order to reach this aim a brief history of SDL was given and a number of SDL models were discussed. These models were analyzed in order to compile a list of guidelines to foster SDL. The first set of guidelines didn’t focus on any specific learning environment and it was necessary to refine these guidelines for an online environment. To be able to refine the guidelines for an online environment, LMSs in general were discussed and a few models for SDL in an online environment were reviewed. The SDL guidelines were further refined for implementation in eFundiTM. eFundiTM is the LMS used at the North-West University, Potchefstroom campus, South Africa. The nature of the AGLE 121 module (a literacy module for all first year students) and the specific functionalities of eFundiTM were discussed and taken in consideration when the final set of guidelines was compiled. The researcher did an empirical study to gather valid and reliable data. A mixed methods inquiry approach was used to obtain reliable evidence. The population consisted of all the students that were enrolled for the AGLE modules over 2 years. These students were divided into 2 groups, the AGLE 121 in 2010 (237 students) and the AGLE 121 (287 students) in 2011. The questionnaire that was used for the quantitative research in this study was based on the Fisher, King and Taque (2001) SDL readiness scale for nursing education. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven participants from each group in order get a better understanding of the data collected from the quantitative research, and to elaborate further on the students’ development of SDL. Findings indicated that the students from the second year of the study did not necessarily improve their SDL-skills. Most of the results from the quantitative data showed small practical significant differences. However, the qualitative data indicated that the SDL skills of the students improved in two of the three factors after they used the newly developed eFundiTM site, in the second year of the study and therefore the researcher is of opinion that the intervention had a positive impact on the students’ SDL skills.

In the twenty-first century, information technology progresses rapidly and web 2.0 times grows greatly. The phenomenon of using knowledge share has become common increasingly on the e-learning platform. The learning methods and knowledge sources become multiply and extensively. Learning way has transformed increasingly from individual solely to group cooperatively that is a kind of interactive mode focused on the learners. According to records about internal knowledge share and transformation, most of them look upon psychological factors of knowledge share from the angle of organized company or discuss the relationship of learners’ personal attitude upon inner factors with creativity, shyness, and self-esteem in the knowledge transformation, but there is seldom to apply to education in the class. In this study, hoping to use knowledge share can help the learners’ doing knowledge conversion. Besides, they can understand to inside and outside knowledge, they also can control inside information for knowledge conversion that makes learners’ knowledge uses and learning ways become even more abundant. In this study, it is based on the Nonaka''s knowledge transformation to basic theory to discuss that knowledge share how to promote knowledge conversion in interactive teaching. Through the teaching on Moodle platform to proceed personal research, it divides knowledge share into the three aspects of sharing personal knowledge, learning opportunities, promote learning motivation; knowledge conversion consists of four aspects of internalization, externalization, socialization, combination that discuss performance and relativeness for every aspect. Parts of the quantification adopt descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. In descriptive statistical analysis questionnaire share learning opportunities toward larger discrete frequency and results larger difference within organization; it is obvious to close to right on samples’ distribution for advancing learning motivation, which shows most of samples get higher relatively. Internalized discrete frequency of knowledge transformation is higher relatively, but it is common within an average value. If knowledge share is higher, knowledge transformation for four sides should be higher relatively. In inferential statistical analysis adopt correlation coefficient analysis and result to share personal knowledge and learning chances that have significantly correlated in the externalization and socialization. Through the regression analysis could know above 0.672 R average values from externalization and socialization with good predictive result when share personal knowledge and learning chances. The analysis results of the platform records’ content could find that learners have a good knowledge share on the Moodle. Major share is focused on personal knowledge and learning opportunities, few parts mention observational problems to promote learning opportunities. Knowledge transformation in externalization, socialization, and combination’s appearance is clearer, but in internalization is difficult to observe on the platform. In qualitative analysis results, most of the students are difficult to operate and use Moodle platform, only limited to use it in the teaching of the class. The process of communication way is by learners’ habit to share and discuss. In addition, learners in internalization are more individual behavior, but including few knowledge share. The conclusions of the research can get as following result: 1.Learners’ interaction with a good knowledge-sharing result on the Moodle platform. 2.Learners’ knowledge transformation in the aspects of externalization and socialization is clear. 3.Significant correlation between knowledge share and knowledge transformation.

The purposes of this research are to development an e-Learning course based on the “Moodle” learning management system, to discuss the possible strategies to combine teaching with e-Learning management system and to assess the learning effects from students after the teachers using e-Learning center as a teaching material. By learning these things, we hope to increase students’ e-Learning interests and also to promote the instruct quality. This research uses” ADDIE” instructional systems design to design the “Internet Literacy” and uses students from the fourth grade for our experiment to practice our seven weeks online courses. Moreover, we use the evaluations from professional teachers and students as a basis for revising our courses. The research result shows: 1. The first step to develop the e-Learning course is to analyze the learners’ learning background and the learning contents of the courses. According to the learning background from the learners, we find out that though most students use internet very often, but they lack the learning experience of e-Learning courses. Thus, designers for e-Learning courses should focus more on learning service supports and the management of learning community. After analyzing the information education teaching materials for learners, we found out: The teaching material for current phase focuses more on cognitive teaching and skills simulation and it lacks the information for internet etiquette, internet safety interaction and internet information application; thus, it is a necessity to implementation “Internet Literacy”. 2. The design phase of “Internet Literacy”, designs for teaching doing assessment tools, designs for teaching strategies, plans for learning processes and plans for the learning community’s managrment . Teachers need to edit and choose the e-Learning materials, and set-up an e-Learning management system and have the assessment of courses for the development phase for “Internet Literacy”. While designing e-Learning courses, teachers’ workloads are heavier than the traditional way of teaching; however, it is more effective and more flexible while using the multimedia hyperlink, on-line tests, and discussion boards on” Moodle” learning management system . 3.The implementation phase of “Internet Literacy”:Teachers can handle students’ individual learning progress and provide help for the students accordingly and it helps students to increase learning interests and it is more effective. Moreover, teachers can use the billboards, chat rooms and votes which are more interactive activities from the e-Learning center to increase students’ interests on discussing internet-related topics and to help students exchanging their opinions, ideas and their feelings. 4. The assessment phase of “Internet Literacy”: By using online transcripts, online learning progresses and learning feedbacks, we know that this course is approved by most students. Additionally, students can reach their cognitive learning goals and skills after students take the learning tasks of Internet Literacy. However, it takes more time and more observations for emotional and attitude parts. The face-to-face teaching times are too less for this research project; thus, it is hard to understand whether the students’ internet literacy has promote or not.

This report describes the work done within the scope of the Master in Informatics Engineering Thesis, Software Engineering specialization, of the Department of Informatics Engineering of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of University of Coimbra. It is a digital platform that allows the implementation and sustainability of the SMS (Saúde, Mente e Sucesso) Project and it is a collaboration with the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences’ researchers from University of Coimbra. The SMS Project (of their own creation) represents an intervention in the main causes of depressive symptoms in adolescents, through face-to-face sessions by duly trained teachers and psychologists. The intended platform (SMS-eSaúde platform), therefore, serves as a support for the dissemination of the program in these sessions. It is also a resource that will continue to be available to the school community where these young people are inserted, after the end of the intervention. In order to make the platform more attractive to young people, gamification elements are included. Furthermore, another characteristic aspect is the focus on usability, hence researchers, mental health technicians, teachers, students and guardians do not have high technological literacy, and therefore the solution must be intuitive to use. After exploring and comparing the functionalities of the CMSs (Content Management Systems) available in the market, namely LMSs (Learning Management Systems), Moodle was selected to respond to the client's needs. Because certain requirements for the SMS platform were not integrated into Moodle, new plugins were developed or existing plugins were customized. The SMS-eSaúde platform is server hosted at DEI (http://esms.dei.uc.pt).

Resumen
According to research by Tennessen, PonTell, Romine and Motheral (1997), the Extension System has been educating the nation for over 96 years, and the idea of using technology as a medium for education has been in the minds of Extension educators for over 40 years. The National E-Extension (eXtension) Initiative is being adopted at a rapid pace, and the history of this impact requires documentation in order to assist others in similar adoption and diffusion processes. The purpose of this historical study was to describe how and why eXtension was established and the implementation of Moodle as a Course Management System (CMS) within eXtension. The researcher was able to determine that the eXtension system is becoming an accepted form of education for Extension. However, barriers to adoption do exist. The study revealed that online education is becoming part of Extension through eXtension, but as awareness grows and develops the eXtension system must do the same. Technology is offering new ways to reach clientele, and as such, Extension continues to strive to take advantage of these technologies. This study consisted of two parts. The first part sought to document the history of eXtension and the implementation of Moodle as a Course Management System (CMS) in Extension. The second part sought to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) related to the use of Moodle as a Course Management System within eXtension. Interviews were conducted with five individuals knowledgeable of the history of eXtension and the implementation of Moodle concerning their experience. For the second part, interviews were conducted with nine individuals currently serving as instructors within one or both eXtension Moodle websites. The researcher was able to document the history of eXtension and Moodle and determine 11 emerging themes within the predetermined areas of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Findings revealed that those involved in using Moodle within Extension have knowledge of the innovation, have formed an attitude toward the innovation, and have decided to adopt or reject the innovation based on the stages of Rogers' innovation-decision process. Completion of the implementation of the innovation and confirmation of the decision stage of the process will be most effectively completed through the work of eXtension at the national level.

Resumen
eLearning is rapidly spreading into the high school learning environment. This research attempts to find desirable and workable features of an eLearning resource that would sustain high school learning communities. The basis of the instrumental case study was the Cambridge International Examination course offered by an eLearning institution over a period of two and a half years. Data was gathered by means of various questionnaires, focus groups, interviews and quantitative analysis of computer log files of activity. Content analysis was performed by comparing research data with information (such as various eLearning models) obtained from the literature review. Similarities and differences were found in the way eLearning is used by high school learners and teachers versus university students and lecturers. Desirable and workable features were identified and the reasons for these explored. A number of suggestions are made that would contribute to sustaining eLearning for high school learners.

In a context where recognition and investment in various fields involving new technologies in education is felt, we decided to conduct this research with the knowledge that there is insufficient existing practices in schools with regard to the use of support platforms in learning and teaching practices, especially in the school studied in this research. In particular, we intend to study the use of the Moodle platform and its contribution to an understanding of current realities and practices in this area and to identify procedures that will make teachers aware of the great potential that this feature offers to support learning. Thus, we propose to conduct this research project to study this platform as a support tool to learning in Calheta Primary and Secondary School. To implement this research, we chose to do a case study aided by an empirical research model, based on a mixed methodology, that is, on a quantitative and qualitative dimension. Data were collected from an interview with the Moodle administrator and three online questionnaires. Two questionnaires were applied to teachers in the school under observation and another to students from three classes. On analyzing the data we can conclude that the use of the platform as a tool to support learning in this school is still very scarce. It is used mainly in training activities and information search. On the whole, it is very little explored and used in the classroom. There is very little collaboration with its use and it is mainly used as a content repository. However, and in general, the teachers are of the opinion that it is a quality tool, simple to work with and well worth the effort.

Resumen
The integration of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the field of education is nowadays a fact worldwide contributing in improving the teaching methods , learning and knowledge gaining as well as creating environments which facilitate the development of special skills . The vast development of the Web and its applications have played a key role establishing the current reality. During the last years the access to the Web , not only from desktop PCs but from mobile devices too , such as mobile phones and PDAs , is a fact. Furthermore , in developing countries the number of users that browse the Web through mobile devices is larger than the number of users that browse the web from desktop PCs . As a natural consequence of the above facts a new kind learning has emerged and constantly been developed ever since : Mobile e-learning , based on the idea of learning with mobile devices anywhere at any time , which will feature new strategies , practices , tools, applications and resources to fulfill the promise of ubiquitous , personal and connected learning . The aim of this thesis is to study and compare the available applications, tools, Learning Management Systems and mobile Operating Systems in order to evaluate their educational potentials and to determine whether they are capable of contributing to providing effective mobile e-learning to their users .

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a useful tool to investigate brain activity by non-invasive cap recording. EEG is widely used in many fields. The teaching of EEG is still with deep of "sectarianism". There are many times spent on experience inheritance between students and teachers. Therefore an EEG e-learning material is highly expected. In this article, a Moodle combined with WAMP structure based EEG e-learning platform for beginner is established. Contents are inclusive of physiological principle of EEG, standard 10-20 EEG topography, EEG recording procedure and skills, EEG signal preprocessing by STIM software with Neuro-Scan amplifier. Some collections of recent EEG articles are also in the material. These materials are reviewed by EEG experts. These materials are presented on webpage, and also by videos, screen capture software. All these materials are packed by CourseMaster software. Cousemaster is used to facilitate the material preparing. Some quiz is also established to measure EEG learning performance edited on Coursemaster. The final materials are transformed as SCORM format and be loaded on Moodle. Several user feedbacks are also collected via surveys. Keywords︰E-learning, EEG, Moodle

Internet is in permanent evolvement. Ever since it appeared as a simple interconnection network between computers it has developed into an interactive space of which all of us make part. The current work synthesizes the various stages of Web, Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0’s evolution focusing on the level of distance learning. Although e-learning has already been experienced at a university level it is still in an embryonic stage, on what concerns secondary teaching. An analysis is done, trying to characterize the current generation of secondary school students and analysing its interaction in their behavioural aspects related to Web 2.0. The characteristics of distance learning are also analysed. Besides, an enquiry is performed, in model-schools, so as to assess whether elearning with educational portals will bring any benefit to the learning ability of this new secondary school generation surrounded by computers, Internet and other technological devices. It is our purpose to study the viability of using learning platforms, in a national range, that contribute to the progress of scientific contents and specifically the secondary school students’ learning, keeping pace with the technological evolution.
