Resumen
Emerging from the Paris surrealist group, the English-born writer and painter Leonora Carrington (England, 1917—Mexico, 2011) was perpetually suspicious of orthodoxy. She often pokes fun at, parodies, and ultimately upsets traditional hierarchies of power. In her work animals impart wisdom, Goddesses loom large, and domestic spaces become sites of occult power. In this article, I investigate Carrington’s suspicion of gurus with claims to esoteric truth. Carrington participated in Fourth Way groups run by students of G. I. Gurdjieff (Christopher Fremantle) and P. D. Ouspensky (Rodney Collin). However, while she had a deep interest in the teachings, Carrington remained suspicious of the group practices of the Fourth Way, as can be seen in Elena Poniatowska’s fictionalized biography Leonora (2015). This article explores Carrington’s contact with the ‘Work’ in order to shed light on the character of Dr. Gambit in her 1950 novel, The Hearing Trumpet, commonly thought to be a parody of Gurdjieff. In doing so, it will investigate Carrington’s feminist objections to the role of the guru, while also contributing to a discussion of the unease some felt toward the praxis of the Fourth Way, despite their attraction to the philosophy.

Este trabajo es continuación del artículo "Leonora Carrington. Frente a la desestructuración". En el presente escrito se aborda la estancia que tuvo la artista en el Sanatorio Santander. Se compara el evento psicótico de Leonora Carrington con el de Daniel Paul Schreber, ambos narrados por los propios sujetos que lo experimentaron. La finalidad de hacer dicha comparación es analizar las diferencias que hay entre el evento de Schreber y el de Leonora, para entender por qué ella sí logró salir y él no. Posteriormente, desde del apartado llamado México, se realizó un análisis psicológico de la artista a través de su obra y la evolución de la misma, donde muestra su proceso de individuación entre los años 1942 y 2011. Para revisar el análisis de su psiquismo se han tomado dos fuentes: la biográfica y la autobiográfica. A través de este análisis puede observarse la evolución psíquica que la artista logró, lo que permite un mejor entendimiento del legado que su trabajo dejó a la humanidad.

En el presente trabajo se busca un acercamiento al conocimiento psíquico de la artista Leonora Carrington. Analizar a un personaje tan complejo no es sencillo, porque las facetas que presenta el desarrollo de su personalidad son múltiples. Aunado a ello está la dificultad para encontrar bibliografía que hable extensamente de su vida, sobre todo de la segunda parte —después de 1942—. Para revisar el análisis de su psiquismo se han tomado dos fuentes: la biográfica y la autobiográfica. A través de este análisis puede observarse la evolución psíquica que la artista logró, lo que permite un mejor entendimiento al legado que su trabajo dejó a la humanidad.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the artistic language and image characteristics of Leonora Carrington, the Muse of the 2022 Venice Biennale, through the analysis of her works in an exhibition of "mysterious world" from women's pen, and then to study the artistic expression forms of women's images in contemporary illustrations. Leonora Carrington is a typical representative of surrealism. In his works, in addition to focusing on the "spiritual automation" of the subconscious and dreams, he also integrates Celtic culture, Renaissance paintings, Central American folk art, medieval alchemy and Jungian psychology. Most of his works focus on the half human and half animal images in the natural environment, and the combination of various wild animals. With the softness of women, they are merged into sacred and bizarre "magic temples". At the same time, it explores the themes of identity and gender, feminism and so on.

This article examines the Map of Down Below as a central element for understanding Leonora Carrington’s Down Below (1944). Carrington’s Surrealist memoir about madness, first dictated in French and then translated into and published in English, recounts her experience of being interned in a mental asylum during the early Francoist dictatorship in Spain while trying to flee from the Nazis in France. The text has often been read as a Surrealist autobiography contesting André Breton’s Nadja (1928). However, and without disavowing this reading, I argue that the way in which Carrington narrates her experience of madness is a means to gather knowledge about the world and the Self beyond the literary and institutional conventions of the time, namely, autobiography and eugenic psychiatry as part of the authoritarian state. Thus, I explore how Down Below, as life writing, illuminates a form of truth that deviates from the autobiographical tradition of the unitarian Self. Carrington’s found truth sheds light on other possibilities of experiencing—or creating—the Self, while she also challenges both the normative Francoist psychiatry and traditional life writing.

A través de fuentes que abordan temas biográficos, esotéricos, musicales, surrealistas y aplicando el método iconográfico de Erwin Panofsky han permitido acercarnos al desciframiento de una obra cuya representación de seres fantásticos y mitológicos son partícipes para la creación de una música perteneciente a otro plano, conocida como “armonía de las esferas” la cual propone la idea de un universo ordenado, constituido por sonidos mágicos e inefables.

Leonora Carrington, una de las mayores expositoras del surrealismo, vivió angustiados años debido a su desequilibro mental y al contexto de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En Memorias de abajo reconstruye el manicomio donde fue sometida a tratos inhumanos tras separarse de Max Ernst y abandonar Francia. El estado mental de Carrington la lleva a estructurar el lugar nombrado Abajo como "el pabellón para los enfermos en curación, la antesala de la libertad" (a decir de la autora Díaz Márquez), contrario a Villa Covadonga, donde los pacientes sufrían tortura física y psicológica. Sin duda estos episodios marcarían su obra pictórica y literaria posterior.

Un viaje a la vida y la obra de Remedios Varo y Leonora Carrington, donde aborda la trayectoria de ambas autoras surrealistas de forma entrelazada. El recorrido que se traza muestra la conexión de ambas artistas, pero sobre todo revela las implicaciones y retos de ser mujeres dentro de un movimiento artístico como el surrealismo. A través de este trabajo, Caballero no identifica solamente los rasgos vitales de la obra de Varo y Carrington, sino también las dificultades de vivir y crear en el mundo del arte siendo mujer en pleno siglo XX.

El presente estudio analiza los textos e ilustraciones de Leche del sueño, cuaderno de trabajo que Leonora Carrington elaboró en los años cincuenta del pasado siglo XX, pero ha sido publicado póstumamente en el año 2012. Los cuentos se consideran desde una perspectiva didáctica, como trabajos en proceso, en tres niveles de interactuación entre texto y dibujos: 1) relatos en los que prima la recompensa de la imaginación; 2) relatos que comentan ilustraciones al tiempo que las complementan; y 3) imágenes que se presentan como esbozos de relatos en potencia.

This article explores the under-researched intertextual and intermedial connections between Leonora Carrington’s transdisciplinary practice and the medium of film. The analysis focuses on the artist’s cameo appearances in two 1960s Mexican productions—There Are No Thieves in This Village (Alberto Isaac 1964) and A Pure Soul (Juan Ibáñez 1965)—which mark her creative collaborations with Surrealist filmmaker Luis Buñuel and Magic Realists Gabriel García Márquez and Carlos Fuentes. Carrington’s cameo roles are analyzed within a network of intertextual translations between her visual and literary works that often mix autobiographical and fictional motifs. Moreover, it is argued that Carrington’s cinematic mediations employ the recurring Surrealist tropes of anti-Catholic and anti-bourgeois satire. The article also investigates Carrington’s creative approach towards art directing and costume design, expressed in the Surrealist horror film The Mansion of Madness (Juan López Moctezuma 1973). The analysis examines the intermedial connections between Carrington’s practice of cinematic set design and her earlier experiments with theatrical scenography. Overall, this study aims to reveal undiscovered aspects of Leonora Carrington’s artistic identity and her transdisciplinary oeuvre.

En las obras de Amparo Dávila y Leonora Carrington existe la presencia de elementos que se repiten de manera sistemática, obsesiva, lo cual aporta a la poética de ambas autoras un estilo particular. Una circunstancia crucial que se manifiesta insistentemente en su narrativa es la recreación de espacios de confinamiento en donde el o la protagonista experimenta extrema violencia física o psicológica. Para Dávila, un aspecto reiterativo es la vulnerabilidad padecida por sus personajes al convertirse en las víctimas de su entorno vital. En contraste, para Carrington, la crueldad del encierro se establece de manera institucionalizada. En ambas autoras, el orden doméstico autoimpuesto o la violencia caótica infligida produce seres o situaciones sobrenaturales o extrañas. Identificar los tipos de violencia en lugares de reclusión y las metáforas obsesivas que esta produce, a través de la psicocrítica de Mauron, es el objetivo de este artículo.

This paper offers an overview of the oeuvre of Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012) based on the iconography and hermeneutics of images relating to identity, trauma and violence. Tanning was not only a painter, but also a sculptor, writer, poet and outstanding chess player, who single-handedly pursued her artistic career through the best part of the twentieth century until her death. In addition, reference will be made to artists with links to Surrealism, such as Leonora Carrington, Dora Maar, Maya Deren and Louise Bourgeois, in order to frame the aspects discussed here in a wider context of female artists. Thus, Tanning will serve as a paradigmatic example of a sensitivity tending towards the mysterious, the occult and trauma in general.

Many cosmogonies see the creation as a hierogamy, a non-dualist cosmogonic mytheme. It can also be found in alchemical engraving books, used in reference to one of the stages of the process, represented in iconography. In that phase, a woman and a man have sexual intercourse, like in the Rosarium Philosophorum. This iconographic type portrays a non-dual worldview, according to which the world needs to link both primary poles. This is achieved with resources inherent to visual art. Alchemy stands out as one of the few currents with a strong non-dual factor in Western schools. Subsequent artists were influenced by this iconography and the ideas represented in it, such as William Blake and surrealists like Leonora Carrington. It is also relevant as one of the most predominant motifs in the style of Andrei Tarkovsky, omnipresent in his work. It is in his last film, The Sacrifice, in which the alchemical universe is most present. In this film, the world is threatened by an apocalyptic Third World War, but a sexual ritual perhaps might reverse the crisis.

Contemporary thinking about archives remains bound up in the vexed relationship between the political and the knowable. This essay explores the political epistemology of archives and archival practices, seeking to dislodge the contemporary scholarly discourse on archives from its tendency to instrumentalize archivation as either a repository of knowledge or an apparatus of power. In studying the collections of two members of the surrealist movement, this essay examines the extent to which archival practices instead suspend the certainties of political desire, disclosing the persistence of discontinuity within the closed systems into which such certainties always threaten to develop. It focuses on two archival collections: the studio of André Breton at 42, rue Fontaine in Paris, and the figural “kitchen” of Leonora Carrington's paintings and writings.

Resumen
Queer theory is an effective tool for challenging ageist assumptions concerning the life course. Recent approaches by age studies scholars and queer theorists, such as Barbara Marshall, Linn Sandberg, Elizabeth Freeman, and Dustin B. Goltz, make use of a queer-theoretical lens to expose naturalized essentialist views of old age and the life course as normative constructions. As a significant way to heighten and shape cultural visibility, literary and filmic narratives play a crucial role in queering ageist cultural scripts of growing older and in highlighting the importance of non-heteronormative representations of aging. Leonora Carrington’s novel The Hearing Trumpet (1974) and Bruce LaBruce’s film Gerontophilia (2013) both exemplify, in their own ways, this process of queering as one of questioning, dismantling, and transforming essentialist assumptions about aging.

Fleeing oncoming enemy forces in Southern France in the summer of 1940, Leonora Carrington passed into Spain and suffered a mental breakdown. Written in the summer of 1943 in an abandoned embassy building in Mexico City, the essay Down Below recalls this treatment in unnerving detail, anticipating later (semi-)autobiographical works such as Janet Frame’s Faces in the Water (1961) or Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar (1963). This essay seeks to build upon this scholarship by examining the composition of the text as a ‘treatment’ in itself, thus centring the clinical reality of Carrington’s experience, but also re-asserting her authorial agency. The intensely complex gestation of the text is, the author argues, intrinsic to its central themes and concerns, as well as constituting an essential element of the journey from illness to health. The author draws a comparison between the dehumanising effects of the sanitorium and the convulsive drug Cardiazol, whereby the isolation of madness is unbearably heightened; and the collaborative restoration of identity that occurs through narration.

Resumen
A obra de Remedios Varo, em especial a pintura Bordando el manto terrestre (1961), se apresenta como um caminho produtivo para aprofundar a reflexão que apresento neste artigo. A ideia é a seguinte: ao admitir, tal como propôs o teórico brasileiro Luiz Costa Lima, a presença de um controle do imaginário no Ocidente, especialmente na América Latina, e na busca por pensá-lo a partir da literatura e das relações culturais no âmbito latino-americano, encontramos certos topos que se mostram como desvios e resistências a este controle. Penso nas obras de certas mulheres estrangeiras que desenvolveram seus trabalhos no México e que de algum modo dialogam com o surrealismo, como Leonora Carrington, Kati Horna e Remedios Varo, autora da pintura que abordaremos neste trabalho.
