Memory for visual patterns was examined in 131 patients with unilateral temporal- or frontal-lobe excisions and 32 normal control subjects. A deficit in short-term memory for matrices of increasing complexity was exhibited by the right frontal-lobe group. Right temporal lobectomy impaired cued recall of visually homogeneous matrices at each of four serial positions. On the delayed recognition of complex visual scenes, right temporal lobectomy decreased identification of changes in figurative detail and spatial composition, whereas right hippocampectomy impaired identification of changes in spa

The purpose of this paper is to examine questions about the role of the hippocampal formation in spatial cognition and spatial navigation. Specifically, Study 1 and Study 2 show that patients with unilateral language nondominant anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) show impairments on tasks assessing cognitive mapping. Study 3 shows that the ability of these patients to navigate a virtual environment (VE) by means of cognitive maps is disrupted. Study 4 shows that, under normal circumstances, healthy adults have a choice of at least two spatial navigation strategies (navigation by means of headin

Abnormally slow processing of language may be a factor contributing to the poor verbal memory seen in many patients with lesions of the anterior temporal region in the left hemisphere. This possibility was examined by comparing the performance of 12 patients with left temporal-lobe resections (LT), 10 patients with similar lesions in the right hemisphere (RT) and 13 normal control (NC) subjects on a lexical-decision task, a sentence-plausibility-judgement task, and a story-recall task. Stimuli were presented aurally, and, in the latter two tasks, at 5 different speech rates ranging from 125 wo

The association between neural activity of the left hemisphere hippocampal region and verbal memory has been well established. Similarly, neuropsychological outcomes following left anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) have been well documented, with deficits in the ability to learn new verbally encoded material consistently displayed. However, the association between non-verbal memory and functioning of the right hemisphere hippocampal region and, consequently, neuropsychological outcomes following right ATL, remains an area of debate. Moreover, relatively new evidence suggests that physical acti

A novel classification using the Shih classification has been proposed recently to describe the severity of seizure recurrence after ATL for patients suffering from intractable epilepsy.
