Resumen
This paper is directed first at identifying where and by whom military influences or topics manifested themselves in the periodical pressʼns coverage of India in the period up to the Indian Rebellion. How such manifestations changed over time, as well as the convergence of Anglo-Indian and British newspapers and magazines on Indian topics, will form an important component of this study. Stemming from these initial enquiries, I will further suggest that the model often employed to comprehend such representations —namely ‘orientalism’ —is, as it is often configured, too simplistic and reductionist to account for all the forces at work in the production of images of India. Instead, the mid-Victorian image of India was produced by a very fractured discourse. Racial stereotypes and affirmations of British superiority were certainly to the forefront, but these were frequently inflected by quite separate agendaʼns, such as the military's pursuit of political and professional status and influence, publishers’ search for profits, and the quest for suitable middle-class role models. Moreover, it was a discourse constrained by the dominant contemporary literary conventions and tropes, notably the historical romance in fiction and didacticism in history and biography. Yet there is one strand that runs through these various agendas and literary strategies and that is the one provided by the Indian army. India was by the third decade of the nineteenth-century as much a military as it was a commercial site. In 1850, the then reigning governor-general, Lord Dalhousie, was reminded by John Lawrence of this fact when the latter insisted that ‘public opinion is essentially military in India. Military views, feelings and interests are therefore paramount’.

Resumen
Grout laminated wood decks (GLWDs), representing the third generation of stressed wood decks, comprise either laminates or logs trimmed to obtain two parallel faces. The logs or laminates, running along the span, are held together by means of transverse internal grout cylinders that may be in either compression or tension. Two full-scale models of GLWD were constructed at Dalhousie University, Halifax, one with grout cylinders in compression and the other with the cylinders in tension. Service load tests conducted in Halifax showed that the former deck had better load distribution characteristics. Two years after the tests in Halifax, the models were shipped to The University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, where they were tested to failure under a central patch load. Because of miscommunication with the supplier, the logs of the GLWD with grout cylinders in compression were also trimmed to the third face that was kept at the bottom of the deck. The failure tests showed that despite its superior load distribution characteristics, the deck with grout cylinders in compression failed at a significantly lower load than the GLWD with cylinders in tension. It is argued that a planar surface in the logs at the flexural tension face not only reduces their flexural stiffness but also brings the defects of wood to the surface with maximum stress. The deck with the flat bottom surface underwent tension failure of the most heavily loaded logs, whereas the deck with the intact round surface of the logs at both top and bottom failed by horizontal splitting of all the logs.Key words: articulated plate, bridge deck, grout laminated deck, orthotropic plate, timber.

Tuesday, 16 February: […] Baillie came on with a motion on the Mutinies. Palmerston appealed to him to give way. Baillie seemed to be replying to the appeal and all were looking for his withdrawal, when he at once slid into his subject. (General titter.) Members go to dinner.8.20. Came down & found Baillie had done, and Lord John defending Dalhousie. Oude for 55 years systematically broke treaties with us. Want of prudence: — not enough troops in Oudh to tread out opposition. Govt. shd. not have denuded India for Persian war. He did not like the Russian war — but if the war were wise — more troops should have been sent. Dissertation on the vain phantom of ‘prestige’, which had ruined Napoleon at Moscow. This, too, we have been following in some of our Eastern wars.

This study aims at reappraising the territorial policy carried out by Lord Dalhousie from 1848 to 1856 by assessing the ideological and political constraints imposed by the two autorities he was accountable to, the East India Company and the British Government's India Board. It considers the political, historical, strategic context within and without the subcontinent's borders, the Government of India's attitude toward native states and neighbouring countries, as welle as the motives for Dalhousie's political and strategic choices. Decisions that reveal Dalhousie's new conception of the Indian subcontinent as a whole which he endeavoured to shape into a nation
