The present study was designed to determine major histocompatibility complex (MHC) expression in the rat CNS following a viral infection. Male Wistar rats were anesthetized with ether and the right cornea was repeatedly scratched with a 23.5 gage needle. A 30 microliter drop of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV1) (PFU 33,000/mL) was placed on the scarified cornea. Animals were sacrificed 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 30 days following infection. 2. The long range DNA organisation of the class II and class III regions in eight HLA homozygous cell lines has been analysed using PFGE. Comparison of the size of the BssHII restriction fragment observed for these cell lines and five individuals possessing one to three C4 genes, shows that the organisation of the C4 genes on each chromosome can be deduced from a single PFGE experiment. The pathogenesis of autism has proven difficult to characterize. However, in many recent studies, it is suggested that the onset of this disorder is the result of multiple etiological factors, which include genetic, immunologic, and viral elements.
