We argue that Malagasy (and related W. Austronesian languages!) has a positive setting for a macro-parameter RICH VOICE MORPHOLOGY which builds complex predicates that code the theta role of their argument: S = [[PreN(6) + (X)] + DP]. Manifestations of this parameter are: (1) Case and theta role are assigned in situ in nuclear clauses with no movement or co-indexing to a topic position. (2) Relative Clauses (and other "extraction" structures) satisfy the "Subjects Only" constraint, again with no movement or indexing. (3) UTAH is freely violated, as theta role assignment derives from compositional semantic interpretation. Predicates resemble lexical Ns in assigning case directly to arguments without using Prepositions and in combining directly with Dets to form DPs that include tense and negation (Keenan 1995, 2000). The major Predicate-Argument type is modeled on the Noun+Possessor one, not the Verb+Object one.

The origin of Malagasy DNA is half African and half Indonesian, nevertheless the Malagasy language, spoken by the entire population, belongs to the Austronesian family. The language most closely related to Malagasy is Maanyan (Greater Barito East group of the Austronesian family), but related languages are also in Sulawesi, Malaysia and Sumatra. For this reason, and because Maanyan is spoken by a population which lives along the Barito river in Kalimantan and which does not possess the necessary skill for long maritime navigation, the ethnic composition of the Indonesian colonizers is still unclear. There is a general consensus that Indonesian sailors reached Madagascar by a maritime trek, but the time, the path and the landing area of the first colonization are all disputed. In this research, we try to answer these problems together with other ones, such as the historical configuration of Malagasy dialects, by types of analysis related to lexicostatistics and glottochronology that draw upon the automated method recently proposed by the authors. The data were collected by the first author at the beginning of 2010 with the invaluable help of Joselinà Soafara Néré and consist of Swadesh lists of 200 items for 23 dialects covering all areas of the island.

ABSTRACTMalagasy speakers probably formed the single largest native speech community among slaves dispersed into the western Indian Ocean between 1500 and 1900. In the eighteenth-century Mascarenes, Malagasy parlers (dialects) served as a contact language, understood both by persons born in Madagascar and by those with no direct ties to the island. Catholic missionaries working in Bourbon and Île de France frequently evangelized among sick and newly disembarked Malagasy slaves in their own tongues, employing servile interpreters and catechists from their ecclesiastical plantations as intermediaries in their ‘work of the word’. Evangelistic style was multilingual, in both French and Malagasy, and largely verbal, but was also informed by Malagasy vernacular manuscripts of Church doctrine set in Roman characters. The importance of Malagasy in the Mascarenes sets the linguistic environment of the islands off in distinctive ways from those of Atlantic slave societies and requires scholars to rethink the language and culture history of the western Indian Ocean islands, heretofore focused almost exclusively on studies of French and its creoles.

AbstractThis article discusses the existential construction in Malagasy, focussing on the distribution and interpretation of nominals. It is argued that the existential construction involves the raising of specific NPs out of the small clause complement of the existential verb misy. Nonspecific NPs, on the other hand, are shown to remain within the complement. That raising correlates with interpretation provides evidence in favour of the Mapping Hypothesis of Diesing (1992). Although the syntactic analysis accounts for the specific/nonspecific distribution in the existential construction, it leaves unexplained the precise interpretation of the specific NP, which may be either partitive, possessive, or locative. This article therefore argues for a relation, PARTITIVE, which unites these three readings.

We begin this paper with a detailed study of Possessor Raising in Malagasy. Possessor Raising is shown to be exceptionally productive; moreover it largely conforms to the generalizations offered by Relational Grammar for Possessor Raising in general. But the incorporation it triggers is not of the same sort as studied in Baker (1996). Then we argue that Possessive Raising is a special case of a more general syntactic/semantic relation we call Raising from NP. This more general operation violates some tenets of Relational Grammar and appears to be a new type of derivational relation within generative grammar.

The article offers an analysis of the paremias of Russian, French, Malagasy and Spanish, devoted to women. The research material was the paremiological units of these languages, obtained by continuous sampling from collections of paremias, works of art and bilingual dictionaries, the selection criterion is the presence of a woman’s lexical unit (French femme , Spanish mujer , Malagasy Vehivavy ) or a description of appearance, significance, behavior function as mother, wife, housewife, etc. in paremias in considered linguocultures. The purpose of the study is to reveal the universal and cultural-specific features of the concept of a woman in the considered corps of the Russian, French Malagasy and Spanish paremies. The tasks of the work also include consideration of the peculiarities of the paremiological and lexical units used in this fragment of the linguistic picture, as well as to describe the general and non-coinciding aspects of the origin and functioning of the antiparemia and the use of gradualness in the paremies. The selection and analysis of paremiological units showed that in the languages in question one can find paremic units characterizing a woman as ideal, intelligent, strong, etc. person, and also the importance of a woman as a housewife and her superiority over a man. A significant part of the analyzed linguistic material is made up of paradoxes in which a woman is compared with a female animal, a plant or object with which a certain quality of a woman is associated, and also a woman is presented as a stupid, talkative, unreliable, lazy, capricious person or unreasonable wife. The originality of the research is that the first time the analysis of the comparative consideration of the paremias about the woman on the material of the Russian, French, Malagasy and Spanish languages and the lexical and paremiological material of the Malagasy language introduced into the scientific circulation is made.

This thesis explains why the prefix maha- in Malagasy (a Western Austronesian language) can have either an abilitive or causative meaning. It is not the case that there is a causative maha- prefix and an abilitive maha- prefix. There is, in fact, only one prefix which is both causative and abilitive. The apparent difference in meaning arises because of a difference in the emphasis placed on what I shall suggest are the two components of this prefix: stativity and causation. Whether maha- receives an abilitive or a causative reading depends on whether it attaches to what I term an "eventive" root or a "non-eventive" root. In the former case, it receives an abilitive reading, in the latter case, a causative reading.

Cette thèse a trois principaux objets : la description morphologique des mots rédupliqués pour en déduire les différents types de réduplication en malgache, la détermination des différentes fonctions de la réduplication et l'étude des valeurs sémantiques dénotées par la réduplication. Les données puisées dans plusieurs dictionnaires et lexiques malgaches disponibles affirment la productivité et la profusion de ce processus. Ce travail de recherche se propose donc de montrer la place de réduplication dans le lexique malgache, en se basant sur l'analyse morphologique et sémantique. Il met en œuvre deux bases théoriques, à savoir la réduplication typologique (Blust 1998, 2001 et Zeitoun : 1998, 2006) et la réduplication fonctionnant comme affixes (Marantz :1982) et McCarthy et Prince (1999). L'étude est basée sur des relations, des fonctions et des associations, d'où le recours à la morphologie structurale, fonctionnelle et associative en adoptant le rapport d'opposition selon Rajaona (1977, 2004) et le cercle linguistique de Prague et aussi la morphologie associative de Danielle Corbin (1988, 1991, 2004). Les éléments du corpus sont extraits des ouvrages écrits, mais également de documents sonores existants ou que nous avons nous-mêmes collectés. La thèse est divisée en trois parties organisées en sept chapitres. Comme résultats, l'étude du corpusa permis d'identifier au moins neufs types de réduplication, cinq fonctions et vingt-cinq valeurs de la réduplication dans la langue malgache. Dans la conclusion, nous avons aussi évoqué les limites, les applications et les perspectives
This thesis has three main objects: the morphological description of reduplicated words with a view to deducing the various types of reduplication in Malagasy, determination of the different functions of reduplication and the study of the semantic values provided by the reduplication. The data collected from a number of Malagasy dictionaries and lexicons that are availables how case the productivity and profusion of the process. This research work thus aims to show reduplication’s place in the Malagasy lexicon, based on morphological and semantic analysis. This work is based on two theoretical views: typological reduplication (Blust: 1998, 2001 and Zeitoun: 1998, 2006) and on the other hand partial reduplication which functions as affix (Marantz: 1982) and McCarthy and Prince (1999). This study is based on relations, functions and associations, thus appealing to structural, functional and associative morphology by adopting opposition relationship (according to Rajaona: 1977, 2004 and the linguistic circle of Prague) and Danielle Corbin’s associative morphology (1987, 1991, 2004). Items of the data have been extracted from written work ssuch as dictionaries as well as existing sound materials or materials we have collected ourselves. This thesis is divided into three parts which comprise seven chapters. As results, the morphological and semantic study of the data identified at least nine types of reduplication, five functions and twenty-five values of reduplication in the Malagasy language. In the conclusion, we also discussed limits, applications and perspectives

À Madagascar, depuis l’indépendance, la gestion de la pluralité linguistique est un thème particulièrement sensible dans cette île marquée par des clivages ethniques, par la mise en œuvre de politiques linguistiques erratiques, fortement empreintes d’idéologie, et par un « sous » et « mal » développement chronique. Jusqu’à présent, aucune des politiques linguistiques menées n’a apporté de solutions satisfaisantes quant au rôle et à la place accordés aux différentes langues en présence au sein de la société en général et dans le système éducatif, en particulier. Aucun programme de développement ni stratégie de lutte contre la pauvreté n’ont eu de résultats probants, bien au contraire. Pourtant, dans le contexte actuel de mondialisation où la communication revêt une acuité prépondérante, les langues apparaissent comme un facteur fondamental du développement. Dès lors, dans l’intérêt du pays et de sa population, n’est-il pas temps de faire une réconciliation interethnique qui puisse permettre de mettre un terme à l’inimitié entre Malgaches et par-là de pouvoir gérer de manière apaisée le plurilinguisme, la politique linguistique et le processus de développement ? N’est-il pas nécessaire de penser la relation entre les langues non plus en termes de domination mais de complémentarité ? Sans participation de tous les Malgaches, un développement durable, intégré et inclusif, est-il possible ?
In Madagascar, since the independence, the management of the linguistic plurality has been a particularly sensitive theme in this island marked by ethnic cleavages, by the implementation of erratic linguistic policies, strongly ideological, and by “sub” and “bad” chronic development. So far, none of the linguistic policies has brought satisfactory solutions to the role and place given to the different languages present in society in general and in in then education system in particular. No development program and anti-poverty strategy has had convincing results, on the contrary. However, in the current context of globalization, where communication is of paramount importance, languages appear to be a fundamental factor of development. Therefore, in the interest of the country and its population, is not it time to make an inter-ethnic reconciliation that can help put an end to the enmity between Malagasy and thereby to be able to manage in a peaceful way, plurilingualism, linguistic policy and the développement process ? Is it not necessary to think of the relationship between languages no longer in terms of domination but of complementarity ? Without the participation of all Malagasy, is sustainable, integrated and inclusive, development possible?

L’enseignement du malgache, langue maternelle et officielle à Madagascar, se trouve dans une position complexe car il ne permet pas aux enfants issus des classes primaires d’avoir les compétences escomptées en apprentissage de langues. Depuis l’avènement de la première république en 1958, les différents programmes scolaires qui se sont succédé n’affichent clairement ni des dispositions linguistiques face aux différentes variétés du malgache, ni des recommandations méthodologiques répondant aux besoins de l’apprentissage dans le contexte plurilingue où évoluent les élèves malgaches. Le système éducatif actuel devrait donc être revu pour être conforme à l’optique de la didactique intégrée et de l’intercompréhension. Cette thèse s’inscrit dans cette optique. Elle est le fruit des enquêtes et des observations des formations des enseignants ainsi que des pratiques de classes dans plusieurs établissements de Madagascar, menées en 2010-2012. Elle soulève les enjeux politique, pédagogique et didactique de l’élaboration du programme scolaire, qui devrait être le principal outil des différents acteurs pédagogiques
Teaching Malagasy, which is the native and official language in Madagascar, is in a complex position because it does not enable children who completed primary classes to have the skills expected in learning languages. Since the advent of the first republic in 1958, the various school curricula which have followed one another do not show clearly either linguistic capacities in front of the different varieties of the Malagasy, or methodological recommendations meeting the needs of learning in the multilingual context where the Malagasy pupils are developing. The current education system should therefore be reconsidered so as to be in accordance with the perspective of integrated didactics and mutual understanding. This thesis is part of this perspective. It is the fruit of inquiries and observations based on the training sessions provided to teachers as well as on the classroom practices in several schools of Madagascar, which were conducted in 2010-2012. It raises the political, educational and didactic issues in developing school curricula, which should be the main tool of the various educational actors

L'histoire de la lexicographie malgache commence en 1603, date de parution du dictionnaire plurilingue du marchand navigateur Frederick de Houtman et se poursuit jusqu'au XXIe siècle marqué par la sortie en 2019 d'un dictionnaire scolaire bilingue destiné aux écoliers et collégiens malgaches. Les études sur l’histoire des dictionnaires malgaches sont assez récentes [J. Dez (1958, 1979, 1991) ; F. Raison Jourde (1977) ; N. Rajaonarimanana (2000)]. Dans le prolongement de ces derniers travaux, cette thèse porte sur l'histoire culturelle et intellectuelle des premiers répertoires lexicographiques (1603-1773) et des dictionnaires bilingues-imprimés ou manuscrits produits tout au long du XIXe siècle (1816-1899) peu connus et peu étudiés. Elle est divisée en trois parties. La première est consacrée à l’analyse des ouvrages fondateurs de Houtman (1603), de Flacourt (1658), de Drury (1729), de Challan (1773) et de Froberville (1816), témoins historiques de la langue malgache. La deuxième aborde la naissance de la lexicographie moderne malgache (1818-1835) avec l’analyse historique et métalexicographique du premier dictionnaire bidirectionnel de Johns et Freeman (1835). La troisième a pour objet la typologie et l’étude formelle (macrostructure et microstructure) des dictionnaires du XIXe siècle. Cette étude vise à replacer chaque ouvrage lexicographique dans son contexte de production, d'un point de vue historique, culturel et linguistique
The history of the Malagasy lexicography begins in 1603, with the publication of the plurilingual dictionary of Frederick de Houtman, a merchant navigator. It continued until the 21st century when in 2019, a bilingual and bidirectional school dictionary for Malagasy school and college students was published. Studies on the history of Malagasy dictionaries are rather recent [J. Dez (1958, 1979, 1991) ; F. Raison Jourde (1977) ; N. Rajaonarimanana (2000)]. As an extension of these works, this thesis deals with the cultural and intellectual history of the first lexicographical repertoires (1603-1773) and the bilingual-printed or manuscript dictionaries produced throughout the 19th century (1816-1896) which are not very well-known and little studied. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first focalises on historical witnesses of the Malagasy language with the analysis of the founding works of Houtman (1603), Flacourt (1658), Drury (1729), Challan (1773)and Froberville (1816). The second part deals with the birth of modern Malagasy lexicography (1818-1835) and historical and metalexicographical analyses of the first bidirectional dictionary of Johns and Freeman (1835). The final part focuses on the typology and the formal study (macrostructure and microstructure) of the 19th century dictionaries. This study aims at placing each lexicographical work in the context of its production from a historical, cultural and linguistic point of view

La thèse porte sur les représentations de la société malgache dans les nouvelles d’un auteur des années 30, écrivant en malgache, Alfred RAMANDIAMANANA (1886-1939). Ecrivain, poète et nouvelliste au début de l’époque coloniale à Madagascar de 1906 à 1939, Ramandiamanana, nostalgique de l’époque précoloniale va s’affilier à une société secrète nationaliste découverte vers la fin de 1915 qui fut un mouvement intellectuel dont les principaux objectifs étaient de préserver l’unité nationale et la lutte pour le développement de Madagascar. Pendant presque trente ans il a publié soit des poèmes, soit des textes d’analyses, soit des nouvelles, dispersés dans les premiers journaux non confessionnels malgaches du début du XXe siècle. D’où l’intérêt de s’interroger sur le sens que prennent ses diverses formes d’écrits tout en les remettant dans leur contexte historique.La thèse se présente en deux volumes. Le volume I Analyse étudie l’articulation entre l’histoire et le contexte politique ainsi que le statut de la langue malgache par rapport à la langue française introduite par la colonisation. Durant cette période de pacification coloniale, la presse étant muselée par la censure, la répression étant sévère, l’analyse porte sur les façons dont les intellectuels se sont approprié la langue en intégrant la critique de la société coloniale et de la société malgache de l’époque en utilisant un langage codé. L’auteur utilise également le rire pour faire passer son message aux lecteurs. Ses œuvres expriment l’engagement culturel de l’auteur. Le deuxième volume comprend les 48 textes en malgache avec la traduction française réalisée par Nirina Vololomaharo RAZAIMIANDRISOA. The thesis focuses on the representations of the Malagasy society in the short stories of the writer of the 30s, writing in Malagasy, Alfred RAMANDIAMANANA (1886-1939).Writer, poet and short story writer at the beginning of the colonial era in Madagascar from 1906 to 1939, Ramandiamanana, nostalgic of the pre-colonial era joined a secret nationalist society discovered towards the end of 1915. The secret society turned out to be an intellectual movement whose main objectives were to preserve the national unity and the struggle for the development of Madagascar. For nearly thirty years, he published either poems, or text analysis, or short stories, dispersed in the first Malagasy non-denominational newspapers of the early twentieth century. It becomes therefore interesting to reflect on the direction taken by these various forms of writings while putting them in their historical context.The thesis is presented in two volumes. Volume I, the Analysis, examines the relationship between history and politics as well as the status of the Malagasy language in relation to the French language introduced by colonialism. During this period of colonial pacification, the press was muzzled by censorship and the repression was severe. Thus, the analysis focuses on the ways in which the intellectuals took over ownership of the language while taking into account the critique of the colonial society and the Malagasy society of the time, using a coded language. The author also uses laughter to get his message across to the readers. His works express the cultural commitment of the author.Volume II consists of 48 texts in Malagasy with the French translation by Nirina Vololomaharo RAZAIMIANDRISOA. Resumen
Situated off the south-eastern coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, the Republic of Madagascar is an island nation of 592,800 square kilometres (km) with a population of 24.8 million in 2016. The 2010 Constitution provides that Malagasy is the national language, while Malagasy and French are the official languages. The working week in the island is from Monday to Friday and the Malagasy ariary (MGA) is the currency which has been used since 2003.
