Resumen
This thesis examines some selective cases of morphophonemic alternation in Mandarin Chinese. It presents analyses of the function -of the retroflex suffix -r and describes several conditions for tone sandhi. The suffix -r functions not simply as a noun formative. Some of the suffixed forms have consistently different meanings from the roots on which they are based. The suffix -r also plays a role in poetry as a time-filler to make each line of a poem fulfill the requirements of the strict number of characters and rhyme. This thesis also explains what causes the tone pattern of words such as xiaojie and jiejie to be pronounced differently. These tonal changes are found to be related to the way in which a word is formed. Compounding, reduplication and suffixation differ with respect to how they effect tone sandhi. Tone alternations in actual speech are explored to determine how tone sandhi produces each pronunciation and how grammatical structure and other factors are relevant.

Resumen
Chinese is noted for its rich inventory of particles that help to form sentences. However, a precise definition of particle is hard to achieve due to its wide range of forms and functions. Most words that are hard to categorize are dumped into this class. Naturally, there are two consequences that come out of this: 1) the difference is huge among groups and subgroups; 2) there seems to be no interconnectedness between groups. In these circumstances, this study mainly aims to address two issues: a) to establish particle as a theoretical construct that is distinguishable from other well-established constructs, and b) to present a unified analysis of the syntax of particles in Chinese. Through a close examination on particles in the cross-linguistic literature, it is found that particles in Mandarin Chinese are characterized by syntactic deficiency, i.e. inability to project. This study thus defines a Chinese particle as a ‘non-projecting word which is adjoined to X^(0,). A systematic account of particles in Chinese has remained as a conundrum due to their diversity. This study concerns two groups of particles in Mandarin Chinese, namely the structural particles and the verbal particles. The former has long been discussed in Chinese literature, while the latter is evolved out of this study. It is adequately shown that the so-called ‘verb-complement compounds’ in traditional Chinese literature are indeed ‘verb-particle combinations’. Accordingly, three types of verbal particles are specified in this study: aspectual, resultative, and directional. The syntactic behaviours of the structural particles and the verbal particles are intensively explored in this study. A unified analysis of these particles is achieved under the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar. It turns out that all of them share the same representation at c-structure. As a non-projecting category, the particle is head-adjoined to X and thus the formation of a syntactic construct. In other words, the particle is syntactically combined rather than lexically combined, represented by two nodes in a tree diagram. Their grammatical functions can be captured at f-structure with two possibilities: a co-head or an XCOMP. The same analysis is generalized to the syntax of the particle ge and the verbal particles in Cantonese. It is proved that particles in Cantonese also feature syntactic deficiency (i.e. inability to project). This dissertation is among the first of its kind to provide a unified analysis of the syntax of particles in Chinese. It is observed that certain particles are quite distinguishable from other word classes by their phrase structural realization. Different from previous studies that have tried to classify particles mainly according to their meanings and functions, this study explores another possibility: particles in Chinese can be captured structurally as a coherent group.
published_or_final_version
Linguistics
Doctoral
Doctor of Philosophy

Resumen
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Linguistics and Philosophy, 2003.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 125-133).
This thesis investigates relative clauses (henceforth RCs) in Mandarin Chinese as spoken in Taiwan from both syntactic and processing perspectives. I also explore the interaction between these two areas, for example, how evidence from one area lends support to or undermines theories in the other area. There are several goals I hope to achieve: First of all, there is a significant gap in the sentence processing literature on Mandarin Chinese and in particular on RCs in Mandarin Chinese. I aim to bridge this gap by conducting experiments that will provide basic understanding of how Chinese RCs are processed. In doing so, I also provide a more complete picture of processing RCs across languages. In this thesis, I report three online reading experiments on Chinese RCs. I show that even though Chinese is also an SVO language like English and French, the results with regard to processing subject-extracted versus object-extracted RCs in Mandarin Chinese are very different from results for the same construction in other SVO languages. Thus, even though subject-extracted RCs are less complex in other SVO languages, they are more complex in Mandarin Chinese. These findings help tease apart various processing theories, in particular, I show that even though resource-based theories, canonical/non-canonical word order (frequency) theories, theory based on accessibility of syntactic positions and perspective shift theory all account for the facts reported in other SVO languages, results from Chinese are only compatible with resource-based theories and canonical/non-canonical (frequency) theories.
(cont.) Secondly, it has been noted that in many cases, resource-based theories and canonical/non-canonical word order (frequency) theories are both compatible with data from sentence processing studies. Resource-based theories attribute processing difficulty associated with subject-extracted RCs to higher storage cost in processing subject-extracted RCs whereas frequency-based canonical word order theory such as the one proposed in Mitchell et al. 1995 attributes this to the less frequent occurrences of subject-extracted RCs in corpora. As a result, it is very difficult to tease these two theories apart. However, I conducted a Chinese corpus study in this thesis and I show that there is no correlation between structural frequencies in corpora and behavioral measures such as reading times, as predicted by frequency theories. As a matter of fact, subject-extracted RCs occur more frequently in the Chinese corpus. This undermines the validity of frequency theories in explaining the processing data reported in this thesis. Thirdly, Aoun and Li to appear argue that there is syntactic and semantic evidence in favor of positing two distinct syntactic derivations for RCs with or without resumptive pronouns. RCs containing gaps involve head-raising of the head NP (i.e. no operator movement) as reconstruction of the head NP back to the RC is available. On the other hand, RCs containing resumptive pronouns involve an empty operator in [Spec, CP] and no head-raising of the head NP (since reconstruction is unavailable) ...
by Franny Pai-Fang Hsiao.
Ph.D.

Carden, Kelly Ann. "Vowel-consonant interaction in two dialects of Mandarin." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2053.

Texto completo
Resumen
The goal of this thesis is to provide a detailed description and analysis of vowel-consonant interaction in Mandarin. Vowel-consonant interactions in Mandarin have been described and analyzed in the literature, but there is little agreement on the exact nature of the interactions, and no acoustic studies have been done to confirm impressionistic transcriptions. The data and analysis in this thesis show that vowel-consonant interaction is extensive in both Northern and Southwestern Mandarin, but the nature and degree of the interactions varies based on vowel, context (onset vs. coda), and dialect. In this thesis, I provide an acoustic analysis and a theoretical account of vowel-consonant interactions in two different dialects of Mandarin that vary in their degree of interaction: the Northern dialect of eastern Hebei (similar to the Beijing dialect) and the Southwestern dialect of northeast Sichuan. The data analyzed was collected from native speakers of both dialects at Sichuan Normal University in Chengdu, and the analysis focuses on comparisons of the F1 and F2 of vowels in various onset and coda contexts. The theoretical account attempts to determine whether vowel-consonant interaction in Mandarin is best classified as a phonological process (e.g. assimilation) or a phonetic process (e.g. co-articulation). I explore possible analyses of the data under multiple theoretical frameworks, including serial rule-based phonology and Optimality Theory (OT), and compare the effectiveness of these analyses to a co-articulation account. Traditionally, sound change phenomena are assumed to be either phonological or phonetic in nature. However, a detailed examination of the data collected reveals an unexpectedly large variety of vowel-consonant interaction effects. The effects range from subtle coarticulatory adjustments that can only be detected instrumentally to large magnitude differences that can be represented by a change in phonological features. The results of this study show that vowel-consonant interaction in Mandarin is even more extensive than previously documented, and that the line between phonetic and phonological processes may be more arbitrary than we like to believe.

Texto completo
This research offers a theorical and dialectological introduction of the vowels of two different varieties of Standard Mandarin (SM): Pǔtōnghuà (Standard Mandarin Spoken in China) and Guóyǔ (Standard Mandarin spoken in Taiwan). Considering that Standard Mandarin adopted the pronunciation from the Beijing dialect, the comparative analysis of Mandarin vowels between Beijing Mandarin and Taiwan Mandarin is also conducted. This thesis is divided into two parts. The aim of the first part is to perform an acoustic analysis of Taiwan Mandarin vowels due to the fact that the Mandarin vowel system has been a controversial topic. In this section, the IPA phonetic transcription of Taiwan Mandarin vowels is also proposed. The second part focuses on the second language acquisition of Mandarin pronunciation by L1 bilingual Spanish/Catalan learners. Unlike Spanish and Catalan, Mandarin has complex vowel system that comprises several allofonic varieties of each phoneme. Therefore, we attempt to discover language transfer and pronunciation problems of Mandarin vowels pronounced by native Spanish/Catalan learners.

Texto completo
This study focuses on the temporal, aspectual, modal and evidential (TAME) values of clause-final enclitic particles in the Mandarin dialect spoken in Baoding (Hebei, China). These unstressed particles perform various semantic and pragmatic functions, but some of them also encode tense, aspect mood and evidentiality (TAME) as well as illocutionary force. The first part of the thesis includes a presentation of the Baoding dialect and a state of the art on the notions of tense, aspect, modality and evidentiality. It gives an overview of the final particles of the Baoding dialect and the various paradigms which structure them. The second part describes the TAME system encoded by these particles, by recording the functions of eight of them, which express: associated motion (=tɕhi and =lɛ); imperfective aspect (=ni and =lɛ.tʂo); change of state (=lɛ), imminent action (the apprehensive particle = lɛ.ia and the egophoric particle =ia); and prioritive (particle =tʂo). This study, which is based on original field data, constitutes the first overall description of the TAME system encoded by final enclitic particles in a non-standard Mandarin dialect, and contributes to our knowledge of linguistic variation within Sinitic languages

Texto completo
Resumen
Hong Kong Chinese and Mandarin are two different varieties of the Chinese Language in terms of lexicology. For over three decades, new words from Hong Kong Chinese have swarmed into Mandarin and related researches also flourished. Yet the reverse is a trend somehow going about more or less unnoticed, which is perhaps mostly due to the scantiness of amount of words involved as a contrast. However, its importance has surfaced along with a growing number of Putonghua words imported into Hong Kong Chinese in the early twenty-first century, as a result of the increasing interaction between Mainland China and Hong Kong. Therefore, the thesis sets to examine the phenomenon of language migration to the South by investigating the use of Putonghua words in Hong Kong written Chinese, so as to better observe the language exchange between Hong Kong and Mainland China. The main body of this paper comprises three parts. First it seeks to identify a body of such Putonghua words entering Hong Kong in a vast corpus of formal publications and web publications and look into the lexicological significance of such words. A total number of 359 words have been collected and semantic categories have been identified based on selected Hong Kong texts. Meanwhile, the semantic meaning, pragmatic meaning and contexts of the words collected have been analysed. Second, this paper examines this body of borrowed Putonghua words from a wide span of aspects in lexicology, including its syntactic and pragmatic features, its different levels of being accepted in Hong Kong, its significance and migration incentives. Meanwhile, The thesis also conducts a diachronic comparison study of this body of loanwords centered on last decade. Third, This paper carries out a synchronic comparison of borrowed words in both directions (Hong Kong Chinese to Mandarin and Mandarin to Hong Kong Chinese), to map out possible similarities and differences that reflect linguistic exchange. It is found that the northward language migration prevails over its southward counterparts regarding time, number, impact and other aspects. Theories and research methods from social linguistics are widely employed in this paper, in hopes of studying the language migration to the south in a scientific and systematic way. It is found that southward migration of words into Hong Kong will be a long-term and slow process, and that the bilateral language exchange between Hong Kong and Mainland China will last continuously, thus allowing Mandarin and Hong Kong Chinese share greater similarities while preserving differences.
published_or_final_version
Chinese
Master
Master of Philosophy

Resumen
This thesis focuses on a special type of construction in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese long discussed in the literature, namely resultative constructions. The interest of the study lies in the fact that resultative constructions involve an interesting mismatch phenomenon of the mapping of grammatical functions and semantic roles. Since grammatical functions and semantic roles are the building blocks of syntax and semantics, the mapping between grammatical functions and semantic roles is considered a manifestation of the syntactic and semantic interface and it is believed that the study of the mapping between them will shed light on the form and meaning association found inhuman language. However, while an adequate mapping theory can reflect how human experience or meaning is expressed in language, the mapping between grammatical functions and semantic roles is neither linear nor mutually correspondent on a one-to-one basis, rendering the nature of its mechanism obscure. In this thesis, the interface between the semantic and syntactic realizations of resultative constructions in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese will be investigated. The goal is to seek an optimal approach which can provide a more satisfactory account in handling mapping of Mandarin and Cantonese resultatives and explaining the special properties of the V-V structures involved in Mandarin and Cantonese resultative constructions. Drawing from the insights of previous accounts and the properties of resultative constructions, a working definition for resultatives is proposed. Through reviewing some current mapping accounts and revealing their inadequacies and limitations in handling grammatical functions and semantic roles mapping in resultative constructions in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese, I am going to argue that Jackendoff’s (1990) conceptual semantics approach provides an optimal structure for the representation of resultative compounds in particular and the resultative constructions in general in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese. I also want to argue that the investigation of the resultative constructions in Mandarin and Cantonese not only sheds light on the prospect of applying Jackendoff’s (1990) conceptual semantics approach to understanding other types of constructions and special phenomena in Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese, but also indicates a new direction of study in the possible multiple sense involved in Mandarin and Cantonese compounds.
published_or_final_version
Linguistics
Master
Master of Philosophy

Resumen
(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of thesis entitled Speaker- Independent Recognition of Putonghua Finals submitted by CHAN, Chit Man for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong In December 1987 ABSTRACT A detailed study had been performed to address the problem of speaker-independent recognition of Putonghua (Mandarin) finals. The study included 35 Putonghua finals, 16 of which having trailing nasals. They were spoken by 51 speakers: 38 females, 13 males, in 5 different tones for two times. The sample was spectrally analyzed by a bank of 18 nonoverlapping critical-band filters. Three data reduction techniques: Karhunen-Loeve Transformation (KLT) , Discrete Cosine Transformation (OCT) and Stepwise Discriminant Analysis (SDA) , were comparat i vely studied for their feature representation capability. The results indicated that KLT was superior to both OCT and SDA. Furthermore, the theoretic equivalence of OCT to KLT was found to be valid only with 5 or more feature dimensions used in computation. On the other hand, the results also showed that the Hahalanobis and a proposed modified Mahalanobis distance both gave a better measurement of performance than the other distances tested, which included the City Block, Euclidean, Minkowski, and Chebyshev. .,. In the second Part of the study, the Hidden Markov Modelling (HMM) technique was investigated. Three classification methods: Phonemic Labell ing (PL), Vector Quantization (VQ) and a proposed Hybrid Symbol (HS) generation, were studied for use with HMM. Whilst PL was found to be simple and efficient, its performance was not as good as VQ. However, the time taken by VQ was excessive, especially in training. The results with the HS method showed that it .could successfully merge the speed advantage of PL and the better discriminatory power of VQ. An approximately 80% saving in the quantizer training time could be achieved with only a marginal loss in performance. At the same time, it Abs-l Abstract was also found that allowing skipping of states in a Left-to-Right model (LRM) could lead to a negative effect on overall recognition. As an indication of performance, the recognition rate of the simulated system was 81.3%, 95.0% and 98.0% with the best I, 2, and 3 candidates included, respectively, using a 256-level VQ and a 6-state, no-skip LRM on a sample of 8,400 finals from 48 speakers. The specific rates on non-nasal finals achieved even 96% - 98% using the best candidate alone . .. ," Abs-2
abstract
toc
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Doctoral
Doctor of Philosophy

Resumen
Although tone plays an important role in Chinese speech perception, many issues regarding tone processing remained debatable. Among these issues, whether tone and segment are integrally or independently processed is the one that motivated this study. To investigate the integration vs. independence view of tone and segment (i.e., rime in this study) processing during Mandarin sentence comprehension, the present experiment adopted the violation paradigm and event- related potential (ERP) recording. Participants heard a series of sentences and judged whether each sentence made sense or not after its offset. The sentences included congruous sentences that embodied the original word (e.g., "观众"/guan1-zhong4/; "audience") and incongruous sentences that were created by mismatching tone (e.g., "观肿"/guan1-zhong3/), rime (e.g., " 观赚"/guan1-zhuan4/) or tone-plus-rime (e.g., "观转"/guan1-zhuan3/) of the second syllable of the original words in the congruous sentences. Larger N400 (250-400 ms) and P600 (500-700 ms) were evoked by the incongruous sentences than congruous sentences. Among the incongruous sentences, the N400 elicited by double violation (i.e., tone-plus-rime violation) was larger than rime violation, which was in turn larger than tone violation. The P600 evoked by tone violation was larger than rime violation in 500-600 ms, but they were comparable in 600-700 ms. In addition, the P600 evoked by tone and rime violation were both larger than double violation. The different ERP effects among the three violation conditions supported the independence view of tone and rime processing. Based on the results, a dynamic model of spoken word processing was proposed, in which the functional dissociation of tone and segment across different stages was taken into consideration.

Resumen
The Sinitic family has been under constant discussion in previous linguistic studies. Through extant research, a North-South demarcation line has been basically discovered within and phenomena of language contact been evidently observed beyond the borders. As academic awareness increases of the plurality in the Sinitic family, the transitional varieties within it require more attention. Wuhan dialect, found in the easternmost point in Southwestern Mandarin, is one such variety that has been under-researched to date and awaits further investigation. This thesis analyses an array of non-Mandarin characteristics in Wuhan dialect and discovers intense language contact with neighbouring languages. First it presents an overview of the phonological and morphological features in this dialect. Then, both the aspectual system and the multi-functional pa42 in Wuhan dialect are systematically discussed in a pan-Sinitic manner. Finally, the thesis concludes that Wuhan dialect, as a representative of Southwestern Mandarin, is at a transitional point on the North-South continuum of Sinitic. Based on the findings from this research, I propose that Wuhan dialect is on a transitional point on the North-South continuum in the Sinitic family. Moreover, the non-Mandarin linguistic idiosyncrasies in Wuhan dialect are due to prolonged language contact with neighbouring languages, especially Changsha Xiang, which has played an important role in the making of Wuhan dialect.
published_or_final_version
Linguistics
Master
Master of Philosophy
