Resumen

L’histoire du Quaternaire de la région de Baie-des-Sables/Trois-Pistoles peut se diviser en quatre phases principales : 1) pré-glaciaire (> 100 000 AA); 2) glaciaire (100 000 - 14 000 ans AA); 3) glacio-marine (14 000 - 12 000 ans AA); 4) marine (depuis 12 000 AA). La limite marine de la région varie de 120 m près de Baie-des-Sables à 166 m aux Trois-Pistoles; la pente du plan de la limite marine s’incline donc de 0,4 m/ km vers le nord-est. La succession des dépôts marins et d’origine marine est la suivante : un till argileux, fossilifère, une argile glacio-marine et une argile massive. Les dépôts de transition entre l’argile glacio-marine et l’argile massive est une argile massive appauvrie en sédiments d’origine appalachienne. À partir du niveau de la mer, les principales terrasses marines sont : la terrasse de Rimouski, la terrasse de Mitis et la terrasse de Bic. On appelle surface de Mie Mac la plateforme et l’escarpement rocheux, le long de la côte. Pour établir la courbe d’émersion, 11 datations au UC furent utilisées. Cette courbe marque le début de la déglaciation à Saint-Fabien vers 13 500 ans AA, suivie par un relèvement rapide des terres jusqu’au début de la construction de la terrasse de Bic après quoi l’émersion est plus lente. À l’exception de la terrasse de Bic, il est difficile de montrer l’apparition de courtes périodes de stabilité ayant permis la construction des autres terrasses marines.

Abstract Seabirds are known to ingest, become entangled in, and incorporate items of marine litter into nests, resulting in risks of injury and mortality events. Published literature for seabird interactions with marine litter is increasingly available worldwide but is generally lacking for the Caribbean region. Here, I report on observations of marine litter used as nesting material by Brown Noddies (Anous stolidus) and on incidental entanglement in the Grenadines, West Indies. Resumen

Monachus monachus is the only member of the Phocidae family native to the Mediterranean. Its presence has been established from the first written texts having to do with navigation, such as the Odyssey, to the latest publications on marine fauna. As to the denomination of the animal in Catalan, the term vell marí (‘old mariner’) has been documented from the 13th century until now. However, from the 15th century onwards we find other concurrent denominations that have restricted the territorial extension of the original form. Through time, forms such as bellmarí, llop de mar (‘sea wolf’), llop marí (‘marine wolf’), foca (‘seal’), bou marí (‘sea oxen’), lleona marina (‘sea lioness’), porc marí (‘sea pig’), ca marí (‘sea dog’) and vaca marina (‘sea cow’) have appeared. The study of these forms, of their semantic motivation and the contrast with the denominations in other Romance languages offer valuable information on the vision that coast dwellers had of this marine mammal and on the contributions to the Mediterranean lexical flow of each human community.

In this review, we compiled a list of marine fungi reported from the lower parts of Avicennia marina, which are permanently or intermittently inundated with sea water from different geographical regions of the world. From 1955 to 2020 a total of 41 publications reporting marine mycota of A. marina were published that include: 12 studies reporting taxa along with their frequency of occurrence, 10 studies without frequency of occurrence and 19 studies described new taxa from the host. A total of 149 marine fungi (120 ascomycetes, 24 asexual ascomycetes and 5 basidiomycetes) were reported from intertidal and submerged wood, pneumatophores and leaves of Avicennia marina from different geographical locations. This figure is the highest number of marine fungi reported from a single mangrove host. Two new families, 11 new genera and 39 new species were described as new to science from A. marina. The highest number of species were recorded from the Indian Ocean (117), while only 75 taxa were recorded from the Pacific Ocean with 43 fungi common to both oceans. However, fewer studies have been carried out in the latter ocean. Intertidal samples of A. marina were collected from nine countries of which India supported the highest fungal diversity from the host with 68 species, followed by Malaysia (57) and Egypt (42). Marine mycota of A. marina were latitudinally distributed with species from subtropics differing largely from those from tropical regions, but were less investigated. Sordariomycetes, Pleosporales and Halosphaeriaceae were the most-species rich class, order and family, respectively. The high percentages of new species recorded from only a single location (67%) indicate that marine fungi from A. marina and other mangrove plants are understudied. Twenty-six species were recorded exclusively from A. marina, of which 23 were described fairly recently as new taxa from the host and this supports the non-specific nature of the saprobic marine fungi. This review represents the first exclusive list of marine fungi from a single mangrove tree species. Out of the 149 species reported from A. marina, only fourteen fungi were explored for their secondary products. Explored species produced new bioactive compounds; many of them have antimicrobial, cytotoxic, phytotoxic, antimalarial and antidiabetic effects.

Resumen

Production, detection, and reaction to external signaling molecules are essential steps in quorum sensing (QS) process. Through the use of QS, bacterial communities may synchronize their responses to shifts in the density and diversity of their vicinal neighbors. QS also play an important role in regulating enzmyatic activities among marine bacteria. The aim of the present study was to detect and identify N- acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) based QS signaling molecules and the possible influence on alginate lyase in marine bacterial isolates of Grimontia marina AS01 and Alteromonas macleodi AS02. Marine water samples were collected from Arabian Sea, Karchi Pakistan, following the standard collection methods. Bacterial strains were isolated and pure cultured using Zobell 2216 marine medium. Molecular identification was achieved based on 16S rRNA gene analysis. Screening for AHLs was achieved using Agrobacterium tumefaciens A136 as a biosensor. Based on 16S rRNA analysis, the bacterial strains were identified as Grimontia marina strain AS01 (OP143768) and Alteromonas macleodii strain AS02 (OP143769). Cross-feeding bioassay revealed the positive reactions for the production of AHLs. Reversed phase-TLC analysis showed the identification of C6-HSL produced by G. marina AS01 and 3OXO-C6-HSL by A. macleodii AS02 strain. Moreover, QS inhibitor AiiA protein reduced the production of alginate lyase in A. macleodi AS02, while no effect was observed in G. marina AS01. These results substantiate the involvement of QS system in regulating alginate lyase activity in A. macleodii AS02. QS in marine bacteria may involve in hydrolysis of complex organic matter in marine environment.

Resumen

The research papers in this volume highlight some of the major issues in marine conservation and offer some exciting insights into future directions for research and management. It is particularly pleasing that the issue focuses on seagrasses, a component of marine biodiversity that is well recognized and with profound ecological significance, but has suffered widespread decline in its distribution over the past half century. The absence of any accurate inventory of seagrass resources makes it difficult to accurately assess the cumulative impact of human activity on them. However, the need to conserve seagrasses is well recognized and it is exciting to see the significant advances being made in bringing conservation biology techniques to seagrass research. The work of Waycott and Kenworthy (this issue) is clearly showing dramatic differences in the life-history strategies, genetic diversity and population structure of different seagrasses. It suggests that seagrasses are far from the homogenous organism that they seem to have been viewed as up until now. This also supports findings elsewhere which suggest that many of the classic paradigms regarding seagrass biology and ecology are based on inappropriate generalizations from a few species. For example, the work of Paling and others (in this issue) challenges the generally held view that we are unlikely to be able to transplant temperate species of seagrass back into disturbed areas.

This article offers a comprehensive historical overview of educational wargaming in the U.S. Marine Corps and how it can evolve in the future. The tradition of leveraging wargames for educational and training purposes is deeply rooted in the Marine Corps. From humble beginnings at the Naval War College to Service-wide wargaming initiatives like TACWAR, the Marine Corps has always sought to develop the intellectual edge of its Marines through wargames. Yet, in successive decades, the Marine Corps has consistently struggled to maintain its wargaming efforts. This article concludes with recommendations on how to develop, expand, and evolve educational wargaming in the Marine Corps.

The research applied symbolic convergence theory as the main theories, with the subjective- interpretive paradigm. Through a qualitative approach, this study was conducted by using fantasy themes analysis. The subjects of this study were members of Marines retiree who lives in Tanah Baru and Rangkapan Jaya Baru, Depok. The object of this research was the aspect of communication in the form of verbal and nonverbal symbols of Marine retiree group members in expressing their fantasy themes. Thirteen informants were chosen as the sample with purposive and snowball sampling techniques. This study aimed to find and identify the fantasy themes of Marine retiree group through elements of setting, character, and action. The results show that the story of Marine retiree group is a bridge that connects the experience of the retired members of the Marines in the events of the past with the present time.

Resumen

Due to its several economic and ecological consequences, biofouling is a widely recognized concern in the marine sector. The search for non-biocide-release antifouling coatings has been on the rise, with carbon-nanocoated surfaces showing promising activity. This work aimed to study the impact of pristine graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) on biofilm development through the representative marine bacteria Cobetia marina and to investigate the antibacterial mechanisms of action of this material. For this purpose, a flow cytometric analysis was performed and a GNP/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface containing 5 wt% GNP (G5/PDMS) was produced, characterized, and assessed regarding its biofilm mitigation potential over 42 days in controlled hydrodynamic conditions that mimic marine environments. Flow cytometry revealed membrane damage, greater metabolic activity, and endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by C. marina when exposed to GNP 5% (w/v) for 24 h. In addition, C. marina biofilms formed on G5/PDMS showed consistently lower cell count and thickness (up to 43% reductions) than PDMS. Biofilm architecture analysis indicated that mature biofilms developed on the graphene-based surface had fewer empty spaces (34% reduction) and reduced biovolume (25% reduction) compared to PDMS. Overall, the GNP-based surface inhibited C. marina biofilm development, showing promising potential as a marine antifouling coating.

In the framework of the maritime potential development program, Dankormar issued a telegram Number ST/701/2020 dated April 9, 2020 regarding the Implementation of the Food Security Program through concrete steps. Brigif 4 Marines/BS is the implementing command unit for Kormar in Lampung. In its implementation, Brigif 4 Marines/BS needs to carry out communication and creativity for the Binpotmar program in synergy with the Lampung Marine Aquaculture Center. By using SPSS version 25 method, it is known that the effect of communication and creativity is partially 16.2% and 28.3%. Then the effect of synergy or simultaneously between Brigif 4 Marines / BS and the Lampung Marine Cultivation Fisheries Center is 35.3%. According to the Guilford criteria, the correlation is quite significant, which is 0.594. So that there needs to be a more intensive and more well-established improvement between the Brigif 4 Marines/BS and the Lampung Marine Aquaculture Center, which is expected to improve the welfare of the people of Lampung

Was the Marine Corps’ success at Iwo Jima a matter of leadership, bravado, or fundamental training? This article examines the efficacy of boot camp, replacement training, and unit training as it relates to the success of the U.S. Marines on Iwo Jima. During World War II, the exploits of the Marines on Iwo Jima have been commended, but the reality of wartime exigencies inevitably placed a strain on the quality of men slated for the Service. However, the Marine Corps’ emphasis on the fundamentals during boot camp proved the necessary ingredient for victory. Beyond leadership or lore, this article asserts that Marine Corps boot camp provided an elemental gateway to success on Iwo Jima.

Resumen

The Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is the largest archipelago country in the world. Its geological constellations which is the world cross position, place the marine territory of the national jurisdiction very strategically for Indonesia as well as for other countries. The marine posture capability can still be developed by enhancing the power and ability of the marines and optimizing the degree patterns. The marine posture development strategy can be done by learning the potential possible threats in the future and analyzing the marine posture conditions that must be improved to enhance national marine security. In this research, the strategy was analyzed with SWOT and BORDA methods. The result of this research is IFE value is 3.26 (3.00- 4.00) and the EFE value of 3.21 (3.00 – 4.00) which indicates that the marine posture is currently in a strong position. The position of marine posture strategy located at coordinates (3.26; 3.21) is Growth and Build. The marine posture development strategy lies in the position of quadrant III with coordinates (0.02;-0.11) that indicate st (strength threat) strategy, i.e. marine posture utilizes force to overcome threats.

Resumen

The nuclear division of Oxyrrhis marina is a very distinct one among the mitoses of dinoflagellates that have been studies. Using synchronized populations, we have investigated the ultrastructural changes in this nuclear division. In interphase, nuclei can be classified into two groups on the basis of the shapes of the chromosomes. Y- and U-shaped chromosomes have been observed in both types of interphase nuclei. By prophase the nucleus becomes oval, many nuclear plaques appear on the nuclear envelope, and many microtubules radiate from these nuclear plaques within the nucleus. Metaphase can be identified by the characteristic arrangement of the chromosomes; an equatorial metaphase plate is absent. As in many higher organisms, anaphase includes two stages: anaphase A and anaphase B. During anaphase A the nucleus does not apparently elongate and the chromosomes migrate towards the poles by a combination of the shortening of the chromosome-associated microtubules and the elongation of those located between daughter chromosomes. During anaphase B the nucleus elongates to about twice its former length. This elongation may result from growth of the interzonal nuclear envelope. Dividing nucleoli are associated with microtubules, which suggests that microtubules may play an active role in the division of the nucleolus. The evolution of mitosis and the phylogenetic relationships between Oxyrrhis, typical dinoflagellates and Syndinium are discussed.

A Gram-negative, neutrophilic and rod-shaped bacterium, strain ZH17T, was isolated from a marine sediment of the East China Sea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic characterization. The isolate grew in the presence of 0–7.5 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 6.5–9.0; optimum growth was observed with 0.5–3.0 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 7.5. Chemotaxonomic analysis showed ubiquinone-10 as predominant respiratory quinone and C18 : 1 ω7c, 11-methyl C18 : 1 ω7c, C16 : 0, C12 : 0 3-OH and C16 : 0 2-OH as major fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 63.5 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the isolate belongs to the genus Ruegeria. Strain ZH17T exhibited the closest phylogenetic affinity to the type strain of Ruegeria pomeroyi, with 97.2 % sequence similarity, and less than 97 % sequence similarity with respect to other described species of the genus Ruegeria. The DNA–DNA reassociation value between strain ZH17T and R. pomeroyi DSM 15171T was 50.7 %. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data, strain ZH17T represents a novel species of the genus Ruegeria, for which the name Ruegeria marina sp. nov. (type strain ZH17T =CGMCC 1.9108T =JCM 16262T) is proposed.

ABSTRACT The ability to acquire diverse and abundant forms of iron would be expected to confer a survival advantage in the marine environment, where iron is scarce. Marine bacteria are known to use siderophores and inorganic iron, but their ability to use heme, an abundant intracellular iron form, has only been examined preliminarily. Microscilla marina, a cultured relative of a bacterial group frequently found on marine particulates, was used as a model organism to examine heme uptake. Searches of the genome revealed analogs to known heme transport proteins, and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR analysis of these genes showed that they were expressed and upregulated under iron stress and during growth on heme. M. marina was found to take up heme-bound iron and could grow on heme as a sole iron source, supporting the genetic evidence for heme transport. Similar putative heme transport components were identified in the genomes of diverse marine bacteria. These systems were found in the genomes of many bacteria thought to be particle associated but were lacking in known free-living organisms (e.g., Pelagibacter ubique and marine cyanobacteria). This distribution of transporters is consistent with the hydrophobic, light-sensitive nature of heme, suggesting that it is primarily available on phytoplankton or detritus or in nutrient-rich environments.

Marine-extracted sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) have been the subject of myriad research since they are considered an eco-friendly source of biologically active compounds. Meanwhile, food and pharmaceutical industries are urgently producing natural sugar substitutes and antioxidants as alternatives to synthetic ones which are associated with cytotoxicity and safety issues. This study assesses the potential of using marine SPs obtained via the ultrasonic-assisted extraction of different marine species, to utilize them as antioxidant sugar substitutes. The carbohydrate, total phenolic contents and antioxidant activities were measured for SP extracts of the algal species of Ulva lactuca, Jania rubens and the marine plant mangrove Avicennia marina. These SPs were structurally elucidated by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses. The results revealed that SPs’ highest yield percent was obtained from Ulva lactuca, 5.50 ± 0.25%. The SPs of Avicennia marina had the highest carbohydrate content, 44 ± 1% and antioxidant activity, 78.85 ± 0.06 at the 100 μg/mL concentration and 89.50 ± 0.21 at the 250 μg/mL concentration. Meanwhile, the highest phenolic content was exhibited by algal SPs obtained from Jania rubens, 132.60 ± 2.50 mgGa/g. Results also showed that all extracts have potent antioxidant activity, while the highest antioxidant activity belonged to the SPs of Avicennia marina owing possibly to their balanced glucose and galactose contents as measured by HPLC. This work emphasizes the need to consider sulfated polysaccharides from marine sources for their antioxidant activity and to correlate it with their monosaccharide content to determine the effect of reducing sugar concentration on the antioxidant activity.

Trace metals are accumulated by marine invertebrates to body concentrations higher, in many cases orders of magnitude higher, than the concentrations in an equivalent weight of the surrounding sea-water (Eisler, 1981; Rainbow, 1990; Phillips & Rainbow, 1993). Specific details of trace metal accumulation processes vary within the same invertebrate species between metals, and for the same trace metal between invertebrates, often between closely related species (Rainbow, 1990, 1993). This short review attempts to highlight some of the comparative aspects of the processes involved that are expected and explicable in terms of the chemistry of the respective elements, and those where the physiology of the species involved intervenes to offset predictions from purely chemical principles. Although an appreciation of trace metal chemistry is crucial to an understanding of trace metal accumulation, idiosyncrasies in the biology of the invertebrate (at any taxon level) may intervene to bring about significant and unexpected comparative differences in metal accumulation patterns.

The purpose of this study was to determine the development undertaken by the Government of the city, to find out the sale of the City and to determine the role of the community in supporting marine tourism activities Beach Marina. This research is located in the Marina Beach of Semarang as has been defined as marine tourism area in the city of Semarang. This research uses descriptive qualitative data analysis techniques including data collection, data reduction, data presentation and decision making. This study uses descriptive qualitative research and quantitative descriptive. The conclusion of this study is the development undertaken by the Tourism Department of Semarang and manager of the Marina include a variety of development, promotion conducted on marine tourism Marina Beach include promotion in tourism events with regional and national scale, in cooperation with the stations, local TV, the role of the public against marine tourism Semarang inclined slightly for the management of Marina handed over to private parties. Wisata bahari menurut Hidayat (2000:15) adalah aktivitas yang berkaitan dengan kelautan yang meliputi santai di pantai atau menikmati alam sekitar, berenang, surfing, diving, water sky dan tur keliling, atau dengan kata lain segala potensi yang mempunyai nilai ekonomi sehingga dapat dimanfaatkan untuk meningkatkan pendapatan masyarakat sekitar serta meningkatkan pendapatan negara. Tujuan Penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pembangunan yang dilakukan oleh Pemerintah Kota Semarang, untuk mengetahui promosi dari Pemerintah Kota dan untuk mengetahui peran masyarakat dalam mendukung kegiatan wisata bahari Pantai Marina. Biomorphic silicon carbide ceramics is very promising as a natural base material for biomedical applications due to their excellent mechanical-biochemical properties and biocompatible behaviour. This innovative material is produced by molten-Si infiltration of carbon templates obtained by controlled pyrolysis of biological precursors. The final product is a light, tough and high-strength material with predictable microstructure. In this study the possibility to produce biomorphic silicon carbide ceramics using marine precursors is demonstrated. Due to the great biodiversity offered by the marine medium, a previous selection of algae (Laminaria ochroleuca Bachelot de la Pylaie, Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar, Saccorhiza polyschides (Lightfoot) Batters and Cystoseira baccata (Gmelin) Silva) and marine plants (Zostera marina L. and Juncus maritimus L.) was carried out, taking into account its microstructure, porosity and interconnectivity of each species. The bioceramization process was evaluated in three phases: original material analysis, pyrolysis process and reactive melt Si-infiltration. For each marine precursor, a detailed study by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of the natural material, the carbon preform and the final SiC biomorphic product is described. The viability to obtain biomorphic SiC ceramic material for all the selected marine precursors is discussed.

Background: Seagrasses (Alismatales) are the only fully marine angiosperms. Zostera marina (eelgrass) plays a crucial role in the functioning of coastal marine ecosystems and global carbon sequestration. It is the most widely studied seagrass and has become a marine model system for exploring adaptation under rapid climate change. The original draft genome (v.1.0) of the seagrass Z. marina (L.) was based on a combination of Illumina mate-pair libraries and fosmid-ends. A total of 25.55 Gb of Illumina and 0.14 Gb of Sanger sequence was obtained representing 47.7× genomic coverage. The assembly resulted in ~2000 unordered scaffolds (L50 of 486 Kb), a final genome assembly size of 203MB, 20,450 protein coding genes and 63% TE content. Here, we present an upgraded chromosome-scale genome assembly and compare v.1.0 and the new v.3.1, reconfirming previous results from Olsen et al. (2016), as well as pointing out new findings. Methods: The same high molecular weight DNA used in the original sequencing of the Finnish clone was used. A high-quality reference genome was assembled with the MECAT assembly pipeline combining PacBio long-read sequencing and Hi-C scaffolding. Results: In total, 75.97 Gb PacBio data was produced. The final assembly comprises six pseudo-chromosomes and 304 unanchored scaffolds with a total length of 260.5Mb and an N50 of 34.6 MB, showing high contiguity and few gaps (~0.5%). 21,483 protein-encoding genes are annotated in this assembly, of which 20,665 (96.2%) obtained at least one functional assignment based on similarity to known proteins. Conclusions: As an important marine angiosperm, the improved Z. marina genome assembly will further assist evolutionary, ecological, and comparative genomics at the chromosome level. The new genome assembly will further our understanding into the structural and physiological adaptations from land to marine life.

AbstractAccording to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's) official economic statistics, over half of the U.S. population lives within 50 miles of the coast. At sea, maritime commerce has tripled since about 1960‐2010. The National Weather Service (NWS) Marine Program has a mission to provide marine forecasts and warnings for the U.S. coastal waters and Great Lakes, offshore and high seas portions of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and for a portion of the Arctic Ocean (north of Alaska). This information helps protect people and their property while on our nation's waters. Weather and ocean data are critical to the mariner. This is due to a combination of hazards—such as strong wind and large waves—and the fact that the mariner is often isolated. When in peril, rescue of these vessels may be hours or days in coming. Not having accurate and timely weather information and the knowledge to properly apply it increases risk to mariners and their vessels. In coastal areas, NWS provides vital services and products to inform and protect residents, businesses, tourists, and others from hazardous weather and surf conditions. Typically in the coastal community, rip currents and inundation caused by storms and unusually high tides are the primary focus. Techniques of marine forecasting have come a long way, bringing us into the modern era of marine observations via satellite, radar, and buoys and forecasting using sophisticated computer programs. The role of marine weather forecasters worldwide is a complex one and will continue to change in response to evolving technology and user requirements.

The results show that the location of the marina beach is not appropriate (TS) with a value of 1.82 in terms of land suitability for the beach recreation category and the carrying capacity of the area for beach recreation is still likely to be improved, but for sports tourism and fishing tourism has been saturated or dense. New innovations are needed in making beach tourism locations for the latest marine tourism recreation in locations in the city of Semarang and are really still naturally accompanied by sound strategies and policies

Lejeune, subjected to a prolonged ownership dispute, updated during a world war, and given an official birthday. This article continues the author’s research on the topic and examines these important milestones in the history of the “Marines’ Hymn” and the conflicts that arose as Marine Corps leadership attempted to maintain and promote one dignified official version that would foster a positive public image for the increasingly professional Corps.

During the American Civil War, U.S. Marines rarely engaged in land operations and even more rarely conducted land-based or amphibious operations involving more than one company. The Marine Corps’ lackluster battlefield performance ashore during the Civil War is best understood by examining their poor organization in officer selection, recruiting and retention, ad hoc formations larger than company size, limited collective tactical training, and experience in large-scale ground combat. The focus of this study is on large-scale Marine land operations, involving battalion-size elements assembled on an ad hoc basis and led by either U.S. Navy officers or U.S. Army officers, to analyze Marines’ battlefield performance ashore.

This research tried to reveal the group values of Marine retiree Depok, which has done by using symbolic convergence theory as the main theory. The aims of this research were to find and identify fantasy themes, rhetorical vision and group values of Marine retiree group in Depok. This study was based on a foundation of interpretative paradigm with qualitative research methods to find a fantasy theme that emerged in the group through the method of analysis of fantasy by Bormann. The results of the this study indicate the stories of Marine retiree in Depok are the bridge of experience of Marine retiree in the past with present time. Besides that, it is the formation of behavior in forms of values, culture and communication behavior of them. From the analysis theme shows that the group values of Marine retiree in Depok has manifested by universal's idealism value of Marines Semper Fidelis (loyalty), sacrifice, dedication, pride and self esteem. The group rhetorical visions are pride of the group, desire for being accepted and close to their group's identity.

AbstractGlobally, ecosystem-based marine spatial planning has become a useful instrument to coordinate the planning of different authorities. This, for balancing different requirements when managing marine areas and space. In the planning process, ecology is setting limits to which human activities are acceptable to the society. The use of the marine environment can be planned similarly as the land environment. We argue that there are several aspects which must be taken into consideration. Marine activities have traditionally been planned and managed in a sectoral way. Today, it has become obvious that a more holistic, multi-sectoral and coordinated approach is needed in future successful marine planning and management. The increased awareness of the importance of the oceans and seas challenges the traditional sector division and geographical limits in marine policy and calls for better coordinated and coherent marine policies.

As a sample case, Türkiye was selected in the context of being a country in the Mediterranean Basin. By reviewing recent news, reports and publications, this study firstly will conclude how invasive alien marine species affect Turkish marines. Then, pufferfish and lionfish will be compared together to determine the risk level of these species for Turkish marine economics.FindingsAs a result of descriptive findings, it is seen that captured fishery has been declined in Turkey recently due to many factors including climate change, global warming, overfishing, environmental pollution and attack of invasive alien species. Pufferfish and lionfish are seen as the most spread marine species in Turkish marines. When comparing pufferfish with lionfish, it is seen that pufferfish is more dangerous than lionfish for Turkish marine economics.Research limitations/implicationsThis study provides descriptive and original findings as a result of comparison of pufferfish and lionfish due to their impact on Turkish marine economy. It is thought to give useful importation for the fight against invasive alien marine species in the Mediterranean Basin. Future studies can investigate different invasive alien marine species and their impacts on marine economics in the Mediterranean Basin.Practical implicationsBased on the Turkish cases, it is determined that there should be different policies for fight against invasive alien marine species in the Mediterranean Sea. Each marine species has different impacts on seafood market. Some of marine species can be consumed as a seafood product but some of them can't be consumed that policy makers should develop other strategies such as catching them to reduce their population in the local marines.Social implicationsThe spread of invasive alien marine species is still continuing in the Mediterranean Basin. Each country has been affected by the attack of invasive alien marine species. To keep sustainable seafood market and marine economics, countries should both implement common policies and develop policies specific to threats in their own countries.Originality/valueThis study reveals key points in the rise of invasive alien marine species in Turkish marines at first. The main contribution of this study is to be a recent sample for a country which is under attack by invasive alien marine species by giving a comparison of pufferfish and lionfish.

Abstract Although many novel marine fungi have been described from Indian mangroves, a significant number of mangroves in India have not been thoroughly investigated for marine fungi. This study highlights the diversity of marine fungi inhabiting dead and decaying wood of Avicennia marina and Rhizophora mucronata, collected from Thengaithittu and Veerampattinam mangroves of Pondicherry, Puducherry State, India. Through microscopic examination, a total of 52 species (in 48 genera) of marine fungi were identified, with 50 species (in 46 genera) belonging to the Ascomycota and 2 species (in 2 genera) belonging to the Basidiomycota. Previous studies recorded 69 marine fungi from Ariyankuppam and Mahé mangroves of Puducherry, and this study contributes 22 new records of marine fungi to this region. In this study, the phylogenetic placement of Rhizophila marina was determined, and this fungus was found to belong to the family Diatrypaceae.

AbstractThe identification of the mechanisms by which marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is produced and regenerated is critical to develop robust prediction of ocean carbon cycling. Polysaccharides represent one of the main constituents of marine DOM and their degradation is mainly attributed to polysaccharidases derived from bacteria. Here, we report that marine viruses can depolymerize the exopolysaccharides (EPS) excreted by their hosts using five bacteriophages that infect the notable EPS producer, Cobetia marina DSMZ 4741. Degradation monitorings as assessed by gel electrophoresis and size exclusion chromatography showed that four out of five phages carry structural enzymes that depolymerize purified solution of Cobetia marina EPS. The depolymerization patterns suggest that these putative polysaccharidases are constitutive, endo-acting and functionally diverse. Viral adsorption kinetics indicate that the presence of these enzymes provides a significant advantage for phages to adsorb onto their hosts upon intense EPS production conditions. The experimental demonstration that marine phages can display polysaccharidases active on bacterial EPS lead us to question whether viruses could also contribute to the degradation of marine DOM and modify its bioavailability. Considering the prominence of phages in the ocean, such studies may unveil an important microbial process that affects the marine carbon cycle.

Maintenance of osmotic homeostasis is essential for all organisms, especially for marine animals in the ocean with 3% salinity or higher. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms that how marine animals adapt to high salinity environment compared to their terrestrial relatives, remain elusive. Here, we investigated marine animal’s genome-wide transcriptional responses to salinity stresses using an emerging marine nematode model Litoditis marina. We found that the transthyretin-like family genes were significantly increased in both hyposaline and hypersaline conditions, while multiple neurotransmitter receptor and ion transporter genes were down-regulated in both conditions, suggesting the existence of conserved strategies for response to stressful salinity environments in L. marina. Unsaturated fatty acids biosynthesis related genes, neuronal related tubulins and intraflagellar transport genes were specifically up-regulated in hyposaline treated worms. By contrast, cuticle related collagen genes were enriched and up-regulated for hypersaline response. Given a wide range of salinity tolerance of the marine nematodes, this study and further genetic analysis of key gene(s) of osmoregulation in L. marina will likely provide important insights into biological evolution and environmental adaptation mechanisms in nematodes and other invertebrate animals in general.

Introduction. The article deals with the issues of training professional personnel for marine economic activities in the new economic conditions. The aim of the work is to develop the concept of training professional personnel for MARINET in the current conditions of the civilizational war of Western countries with Russia and the revision of the national policy in the field of education, including the attitude to the Bologna process and the transition to mobilization innovation in the economy.Materials and Methods. Of the Marinet NTI Roadmap of Russia for the period up to 2035, the concept of the special course program of additional professional education "Fundamentals of designing under the MARINET program" is proposed, taking into account modern trends in the development of the general configuration of online - offline education in the world. A key feature of the program is the principle of continuity of "vocational education for life", which includes the early involvement of children and young people in the marine economic sphere of the country's economy, taking into account its great potential, and an interdisciplinary approach to the formation of training modules. In the concepts of ESG and STEM education with a focus on joint programs of universities and business partners, a transition from project-oriented education to product-oriented education aimed at creating and mastering in a short time the production of specific new products demanded by the market is proposed.Results. The MARINET DPO program, designed for 72 hours, includes 9 module blocks: 1) an introductory block – prerequisites for the transition to a product-oriented DPO, 2) marine bioresources and marine ecology, 3) fishing, fishing equipment and materials, 4) innovative shipbuilding, 5) digital navigation and communication, 6) aquaculture, 7) marine energy, 8) integrated processing of marine bioresources, 9) deep processing of secondary marine bioresources. Approbation of the MARINET DPO program at the Kaliningrad State Technical University makes it possible to solve the problems of reorienting the vocational education system into STEM competency profiles, taking into account innovative entrepreneurship. Discussion and Conclusions. The introduction of the proposed program in maritime education will be one of the stages of accelerated development of the innovation system of the MARINET track of the National Technology Initiative (NTI) of Russia. The systematic organization of professional marine engineering education in close cooperation with vocational education organizations, research institutes, design bureaus, with the business community will allow to implement product-oriented education aimed at training personnel ready to work in the innovative economy of the country's marine industry.

AbstractAt the start of the 21st century, a coastal residential-estate marina was developed on a previously degraded and polluted brownfield island site within Knysna estuarine bay, Garden Route National Park, South Africa, including the creation of 25 ha of new flow-through tidal canals. Canals near the larger entrance to this system now support permanently submerged beds of seagrass, which in turn support abundant macrobenthic invertebrates. In comparison with equivalent seagrass-associated assemblages present in natural channels around the island, those in the artificial marina canals were similarly structured and dominated by the same species, but the marina assemblages were significantly more species-rich (1.4 x on average) and were more abundant. Indeed, this area of marina supports the richest seagrass-associated macrofaunal biodiversity yet recorded from South Africa. The canals created de novo therefore now form a valuable addition to the bay’s marine habitat, in marked contrast to the generality that marinas developed on greenfield sites represent a net reduction in intertidal and shallow marine area and associated seagrass-associated benthos. If located and constructed appropriately, brownfield marina development and conservation of coastal marine biodiversity clearly need not be antithetical, and brownfield sites may provide opportunity for the location and management of ‘artificial marine micro-reserves’ or for the action of ‘other effective area-based conservation measures’ for soft-sediment faunas.
