Texto completoRecent developments in digital fabrication practices across the fields of art, architecture and design have inspired the notion of a “new materiality” — a rethinking of our relationship to the physical world in light of the ever-increasing convergence between robotics, computation and materials science. Yet, the very use of computer-controlled machinery remains, more often than not, envisioned in terms of a passive understanding of matter. This thesis aims at offering an updated vision of the relationship between materiality and design, by developing new production schemes allowing for an expression of material agency. Criticizing the traditional idea of a prescriptive, deterministic link between design and fabrication, the proposed argument reframes authority as a shared resource, spread through a network of productive and autonomous agents. The thesis' main outcomes consist in a set of practical methodologies as well as an encompassing conceptual framework, which may both be reinvested by other practitioners. Informed by and grounded in practice, the research builds on five experiments, adopting a prospective approach towards programming and digital fabrication. Drawing on authors like Gilbert Simondon and Andrew Pickering, the accompanying conceptualization allows for a reflexive discussion of the thesis' practical developments, while situating them in respect to such historical precedents as non standard production and cybernetics

Texto completoWhat could this title hide? Or reveal instead? It insinuates a certain tendency to a play on words. It hints at style. “Turn the page” since it’s about books, about reading practice. “Turn the page” because the days of books seem numbered, to believe certain prognostication to which this work does not address. However, there are new, digital pages. "About the materiality", since the paper page of the codex is turning literally around a material axis, sewn, stapled or glued. “Materiality", it is as an intrinsic quality of the book object which defines the products of writing. “Reading object,” it means different objects of reading, traditionally represented by printed books. While, now, it is possible to read technological objects too. “Object” once more, for the semio-pragmatic approach that desires to emphasize the material aspect of reading practice versus its linguistic aspect. “Observations,” it specifies and qualifies the approximate tenor of what is said and how it is said. “Semiotics,” it is the definition of the method and of the point of view under which these objects are investigated. “Pedagogical perspectives”, it is to refer to the field from which this study took its inspiration. Also, towards that it returns hoping to create bridges between several disciplines. This summary is a kind of explanation of the title, also intends to indicate the way of the reflection that develops the relationship of man to the written word that is based on the materiality

"Matérialité et gouvernance du système sociotechnique très haut débit à Dakar (Sénégal) : vision stratégique de l’infrastructure numérique, planification métropolitaine et chantiers de construction". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Gustave Eiffel, 2025. http://www.theses.fr/2025UEFL2009.
Texto completoThis thesis analyzes the development of a very high-speed socio-technical system (fiber optic network and data centers) and the urban transformations of a West African metropolis, questioning the conditions and modalities of a “digital urbanism” in Dakar (Senegal). The aim is to understand how digital infrastructure and urban spaces shape each other, and to propose a reading based on materiality rather than overhanging an inert materiality-support.Drawing on work from urban studies and social approaches to technology inspired by Science and Technology Studies (STS), the investigation focuses on the socio-political, socio-technical and territorial dimensions of very-high-speed infrastructure deployment, which it analyzes at three scales, corresponding to distinct spheres of action and temporalities, and in different types of intra-urban spaces. Using a qualitative methodology (interviews, participant observation, mapping), the thesis demonstrates the ambivalent relationship between the privatized development of the very-high-speed socio-technical system and socio-spatial inequalities. On a national and metropolitan scale, it highlights the links between urban planners and powerful international telecoms operators, and their respective influence on metropolitan digital planning in a context marked by neoliberal policies. At the street level, it analyzes the role of network engineers and technicians, highlighting the role of material contingencies, informality and socio-technical “bricolage”, as well as the role of “street-level” technical expertise in the material development of very high-speed infrastructure, through a study of construction sites and “on-the-spot” work. Analysis of the governance of deployment, coupled with that of urban materiality and metropolitan socio-spatial evolutions, has enabled us to qualify a digital urbanism that differs according to urban profiles. However, while insisting on the decisive weight of telecoms operators and the insufficient prescription and regulation capacity of public authorities, the thesis identifies self-regulation mechanisms that are sometimes beneficial to the general interest, and partial catch-up mechanisms in certain less “attractive” neighborhoods. These results lead us to qualify the effects of the “privatization” of digital development on urban fragmentation, and suggest elements of reflection for the public reengagement of a thought and practice of urban digital planning in Dakar
Burczykowski, Ludovic. "Par-delà l'écran : dimension physique et espace numérique". Thesis, Paris 8, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA080020.
Texto completoIn digital arts, a practice is being developed by an increasing number of creators. This practice puts in relation an immaterial projected digital image, with a material medium, generally non standardized, that ensures a certain kind of independence or autonomy towards the image. In these creations, it’s about starting from a distinction, an opposition or a distance between a virtual element and a physical element, and by moving it closer, make emerging a sense that this type of creation is becoming susceptible to carry. Becoming a specific way to express a relationship to the word, this articulation is a way to express sensible world with its own singularity and specificities. The purpose of this thesis is to outline various approaches for creation, methods of implementation, and potential mechanisms of perception when this meeting between image, object and scene is on. Not only to understand the reason of the expansion of this growing practice in the early 21st century, but also to guide some possible working areas for productions or analysis of art works

Serain, Clément. "La conservation-restauration du patrimoine au regard des humanités numériques : enjeux techniques, sociocognitifs et politiques". Thesis, Paris 8, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA080048.
Texto completoWhilst acknowledging the mutations induced by digital technologies within cultural institutions, this thesis proposes to analyse the impact of these technologies in the particular field of conservation and restoration of museum collections. This work assumes that the discipline of conservation-restoration, far from being neutral, builds our understanding and perception of the materiality of cultural heritage objects. As a result, this thesis aims at demonstrating how communication and information technologies, used within the field of conservation-restoration, have a crucial role in the development of that understanding and perception, and how they guide our cognitive and sensory relation to the materiality of cultural objects. Moreover, in the framework of digital humanities, this work also aims at studying how digital tools can adapt to conservation-restoration purposes on the one hand, while reconfiguring how we conceive the very notions of conservation, restoration, materiality, transmission and cultural heritage on the other hand. In this perspective, this thesis also deals with the way digital technologies contribute to the sharing of knowledge and to a new sensory apprehension of the materiality of cultural objects for a wider public than that of conservation-restoration specialists alone

Texto completoHow is the city developed by and with digital technologies? To answer this question, the thesis analyses in a single movement the urban consequences of the information and physical infrastructures of digital technology. To this end, it mobilizes the methodological and analytical frameworks of Infrastructure Studies, the sociology of techniques and innovation and the sociology of public problems. From an empirical point of view, it proposes to take a step back from the major mediatized experiments of the "smart city" to study more diffuse, everyday transformations generated by digital technologies. It consists of two case studies: on the one hand, it follows a programme to develop connected services to improve the accessibility of a Paris Region transport network for people with reduced mobility, and on the other hand, it analyses the discreet establishment of numerous data centres in Plaine Commune, in the north of the Parisian metropolitan area, and the resulting local unrest. The fieldwork includes several participating observations, about 40 interviews, a press review and the analysis of internal documents of the organizations. The thesis shows how the logic of immediacy, of "real time", generally at the centre of the promises associated with the digital city, requires an increased availability of workers, data and servers. Thus, in the transport company, projects to improve passenger service via smartphones confront station agents with the dual imperative of the face-to-face relationship and the alerts of the connected device. The cartographic data on which connected services are based, often taken for granted, require organizations to invent new collaborations to ensure their production and maintenance. The servers necessary for the functioning of the digital society are accumulated, protected and maintained in data centres, imposing buildings that are geographically concentrated, disrupt the environments in which they are located, disconcert elected officials and disturb residents. The logic of real time thus weighs on the social and spatial organization of cities, and invites us to rethink the urban development of digital infrastructures in terms of work, maintenance and the environment - unlike those, more commonly mobilized, of socio-technical imaginaries, promises of optimization and urban models
Debeaux, Gaelle. "Multiplication des récits et stéréométrie littéraire : d’Italo Calvino aux épifictions contemporaines". Thesis, Rennes 2, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017REN20039/document.
Texto completoFrom the Oulipian novels of Italo Calvino – If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller and The Castle of Crossed Destinies – to contemporary hyperfiction, a redefinition of the form and the issue of embedding narratives has taken place. Based on a contemporary corpus, this work aims to explore the mutations of such a narrative structure seen as traditional and theorised by French narratologists (G. Genette, T. Todorov) during the 1960s. The notion of narrative multiplication seeks to increase its potential in order to address a broader field of novels which try to intertwine several narratives at the same time as to interfere with the hierarchical frames of reference implied by embedding narratives. At the crossroads of narratology and theories of reception, this work questions what is narrative multiplication while keeping in mind its effects on the reader and on the plot (P. Ricoeur) : how can we understand and analyse the reader’s passionate reception (R. Baroni) of monstrous novels, interweaving narrative levels and playing with disorder, loss and illegibility ? We offer to follow closely the intrigued reader, protagonist of this study and surveyor or geometrician of fictional and textual spaces created by narrative multiplication, through her progress in novels – printed or digital – which put at the centre of their concerns the question of narrative devices

Texto completoConsumers are most of the time left at the margins of neo-institutional theory. Yet, the institutional work concept makes it possible to consider consumer practices aimed at maintaining or disrupting formerly institutionalized practices or at creating new ones. Furthermore, taking into account the practices material dimension allows us to consider how objects play a role in consumer institutional work processes. The case of the French recorded music industry from 1994 to 2014 - when MP3 downloading then streaming overcame CD consumption practices - is studied with a grounded theory inductive approach. Our dissertation shows that consumers collaborate in order to perform institutional work (maintaining, disrupting and creating institutionalized practices). To disrupt institutionalized practices, they use « bricolage » to assemble available practices and objects, among themcommunity-objects that play a specific role: sharing information and objects. Moreover, material resilience, not only contributes to practice maintenance but also to disruption and new practices institutionalization
The interactive action with the digital is daily. However, few thoughts on the subject highlight the importance of the trace in this relationship which links us to the machine. Often, an interactive experience generates a trace and it is from this important element that we are thinking, in this master’s thesis, on the relationship with our interactive digital environment. The trace is then understood as a new epistemological approach to interactive digital arts. To think the digital as immaterial generates an almost non-existent of the trace within a digital work, involving a mystification. Throughout this research, our goal is to give back materiality to this trace, so that it can fit into our landscape called material. The work Pulse Room (2006) by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer will enable us to reflect on the ambivalences and convergences that exists in the approach of a computerized society in front of the digital machine, and understand how we evaluate the trace that is left behind each of our digital performances. It's only when the digital trace will incorporate a certain materiality, that we will be able to see ourselves as an object of reflection, to discern how we behave facing this environment and learn to be critical.
