Resumen
The design and shape of a v-ribbed belt affects its radial movement in the pulley grooves. When rib bottom/ groove tip contact occurs the wedge action decreases. The beginning of the contact depends on belt tension, fit between rib and groove, wear and material properties. For the first time a non-contact laser displacement meter has been used for dynamic measurements of the radial movement of a v-ribbed belt (type 3PK) around the arc of wrap running on a belt testing rig. Accurate and repeatable results are possible. By the help of this device, the radial movement and the beginning of the rib

Resumen
This thesis is concerned with the design, control and performance evaluation of a novel design for mechanical drives. This drive operates in a pulsed manner where energy is extracted from the input, stored and then released to the output. A spring acts as the energy store and brakes and clutches control the extraction and release of energy. By controlling the storage and release of this energy the device's output velocity can be controlled independently of the input velocity and since theoretically there is no energy loss the device operates in an analogous fashion to a variable ratio gearbox.

In the first part of the thesis, a method is presented for autonomous kinematic calibration of a 3-DOF redundant parallel robot. Multiple closed loops are used in a least squares optimization method. Some numerical methods such as column scaling of the gradient matrix and observability indices for the best pose set of robot calibration configurations are discussed. Four observability indices are considered analytically, geometrically, and experimentally. Two of these indices are presented for the first time. The fou

Traditional PI controllers have been largely employed for the control of industrial variable speed drives due to the design ease and performance satisfaction they provide but, the problem is that these controllers do not always provide robust performance under variable loads. Existing solutions present themselves as complex control strategies that demand specialist expertise for their implementation. As a direct consequence, these factors have limited their adoption for the industrial control of drives. To counter this trend, the thesis proposes two techniques for robust control system design.

Transmission error is a measure of the positioning accuracy of a gear system. This has been widely documented in gearing for many years as the source of problems in noise and vibration. It is a result of errors in the contact conditions which affect the driven gear with respect to the rotation of the driver gear. This research aims to present a better understanding of the basic kinematics of worm gear systems by identifying the significant influences which determine the contact conditions. Resumen
This Ph.D. thesis deals with condition monitoring of mechanical failures in variable speed induction motor drives by stator current analysis. Two effects of a mechanical fault are considered: load torque oscillations and airgap eccentricity. The analytical modelling using the magnetomotive force and permeance wave approach leads to two stator current models. The fault provokes amplitude or phase modulation of the fundamental current component. Suitable detection methods are spectral analysis and parameter estimation in steady state whereas time-frequency analysis is required during transients.

Resumen
Voice is an important tool for communication. Consequently, voice disorders tend to severely diminish quality of life. Voice research seeks to understand the physics that govern voice production to improve treatment of voice disorders. This thesis develops a method for creating complex synthetic laryngeal models and obtaining flow data within these complex models. The method uses Computed Tomography (CT) scan data to create silicone models of the larynx. Index of refraction matching allows flow field data to be collected within a synthetic complex larynx, which had previously been impossible.

Initial flow field experiments studying the phenomena that drives the so called diffusion fish indicated that there may be an unaccounted for reliance on the width of the diffusion fish in relation to the width of the tank it m

An alternative method includes employing only one motor to control multiple joints. Investigating humanoid hand movements used in everyday tasks, graduate students working with Professor Asada discovered through Principal Component Analysis that a majority of these motions can be approximated by a gra
