Resumen

Subtle changes in the membrane potential of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) are pivotal for controlling pulmonary vascular tone, e.g., for initiating Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction, a vital mechanism of the pulmonary circulation. In our study, we evaluated the ability of the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based voltage-sensor Mermaid to detect such subtle changes in membrane potential. Mouse PASMCs were isolated and transduced with Mermaid-encoding lentiviral vectors before the acceptor/donor emission ratio was assessed via live cell FRET-imaging. Mermaid’s sensitivity was tested by applying specific potassium chloride (KCl) concentrations. These KCl concentrations were previously validated by patch clamp recordings to induce depolarization with predefined amplitudes that physiologically occur in PASMCs. Mermaid’s emission ratio dose-dependently increased upon depolarization with KCl. However, Mermaid formed unspecific intracellular aggregates, which limited the usefulness of this voltage sensor. When analyzing the membrane rim only to circumvent these unspecific signals, Mermaid was not suitable to resolve subtle changes in the membrane potential of ≤10 mV. In summary, we found Mermaid to be a suitable alternative for reliably detecting qualitative membrane voltage changes of more than 10 mV in primary mouse PASMCs. However, one should be aware of the limitations associated with this voltage sensor.

Resumen

This article is part reflection on how academic disciplines can stymie creative scholarship and part critical effort to break out of that orientation to reclaim the author’s personal passion for mermaids as subject for scholarly analysis. Pressman argues that contemporary mermaid literature has much to tell us about our most pressing social, cultural, and political issues. This article takes as its starting point the racist backlash over Disney’s 2019 casting announcement for its 2023 feature film and the 2020 antiracist graffiti on The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen as the complex site for assessing the entanglements and inner workings of cultural memory. Following Rita Felski’s call to pursue attachment over critical detachment in scholarship, this article enacts creative-critical attention via a focus on mermaids in contemporary public discourse.

Resumen

Mermaid is a new decision support tool for managing shellfish growing areas. It is written in Visual Basic for Application (VBA) language and uses Microsoft Excel for input, calculation, and output modules. The program automatically imports the regulatory agency's data and generates scattergrams that can be used as decision support tools to help decide which shellfish growing areas should be closed and which ones should be open for harvest. The Mermaid program uses the equations developed by the Pearl model that provide more sensitive and accurate measures of sanitation safety for consumption of shellfish, and are more accurate than the U.S. National Standards.

Resumen

Sirenomelia, alternatively known as Mermaid Syndrome, is a very rare congenital deformity in which the legs are fused together, giving them the appearance of a mermaid's tail. This syndrome was originally stated by Rocheas and Palfya in 16th century. It occurs in about 1 in 100,000 live births. It is also associated with multiple anomalies like renal agenesis, ambiguous external genitalia, imperforate anus, blind intestinal loop and single umbilical artery. Occasionally double inferior Venacava, dextrocardia and angiomatous lumbosacral myelocystocele are reported as well. Most of the Sirenomelia come to an end as stillbirth. Only a few are born alive and survival beyond few hours after delivery is extremely rare. About 300 cases have been reported in the world literature so far.

Resumen

Mermaiding is the practice of wearing a tail designed to look like that of a fish. In this work I look at this phenomenon from the lens of gender and performance, aiming to understand if mermaiding constitutes a form of drag, by establishing the position of the mermaid symbol in queer and transgender spaces, then comparing testimonies of drag performers and professional and amateur mermaids. I also look at this practice through the lens of post-human theory, determining in which ways the mermaid body constitutes an object of identification for the person wearing a tail. By doing so, I demonstrate the similarities between the phenomena and their meaning, and show that the emergence of this practice affirms posthuman predictions of a future where the connection between human body and identity dissolve and enable new, hybrid identities.

This study aims to investigate the character of a male mermaid general in the shrine tale General Seolun handed down on the islands near Suu Island, Tongyeong-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. This study found that although male mermaids rarely appear in Korean dang-folk tales or literary records, this folk tale called General Seolun has been handed down on the Suu and the nearby islands in Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do and that there is a shrine called ‘Jiryeongsa’ on Suu Island. Therefore, a shrine ceremony was held, and a character study of the shrine god ‘General Seolun’ was necessary. The shrine tale, General Seolun, was recorded by Kim Young-il from 1992 to 1996. Based on the transcription, the morphological characteristics of the dang-folk tale were identified by comparing the original interpretation of the shaman myth and the folktale structure. The morphological characteristics were revealed through the Janggundang-related tale by focusing on the shrine tale told at the shrine on a small island that was unknown at the time. This can be seen as an outstanding achievement in research. However, it also signifies the meaning of the character ‘male mermaid general’ and its narrative, which was deemed insufficient. This study was based on existing and added data after a visit to Suu Island in October 2023 to find the kind of person Seolun was as a ‘male mermaid general’. The oral data of General Seolun was reviewed and organized by dividing it into birth and miracles, growth and trials, death, and transmission attitude. The narrative characteristics reveal ambivalent meanings, such as the fate of loyalists and traitors in birth and activity, the existence of humans and non-humans in their mysterious abilities, and fear and gratitude given to the inheritors in the death stage. The shrine tale, which forms an ambivalent pair of opposites, depicts General Seolun as a character who changes through opposing values at each stage of the narrative. As a ‘male mermaid general’ in shrine tales, Seolun was, firstly, a male traitor regarding gender and possessed peripheral masculinity. Second, as biological beings, male mermaids are middle-earth beings between the god of water and humans, possessing extraordinary abilities representing physical characteristics. Third, he is a general who realizes the wishes of the fishermen regarding succession. Unlike the historically real general god, this can be seen as the fact that the contemporary perceptions and desires of the transmitters formed the shrine tale of Seolun as a ‘male mermaid general.’

We report a case of sirenomelia baby (Mermaid syndrome) born to a twenty three years old female at 37 weeks of gestation. Sirenomelia is characterized by fusion of the lower limbs with absent kidneys, absent external genitalia and other gastrointestinal defects. It results from the failure of normal vascular supply from the lower aorta in vitro, maternal Diabetes mellitus has been associated with caudal regression syndrome and sirenomelia.

AbstractThe mermaid syndrome (sirenomelia) is an extremely rare anomaly, an incidence of 1 in 100,000 births, in which a newborn born with legs joined together featuring a mermaid-like appearance (head and trunk like humans and tail like fish), and in most cases die shortly after birth. Gastrointestinal and urogenital anomalies and single umbilical artery are clinical outcome of this syndrome. There are two important hypotheses for pathogenesis of mermaid syndrome: vitelline artery steal hypothesis and defective blastogenesis hypothesis. The cause of the mermaid syndrome is unknown, but there are some possible factors such as age younger than 20 years and older than 40 years in mother and exposure of fetus to teratogenics. Here, we introduced 19-year-old mother's first neonate with mermaid syndrome. The mother had gestational diabetes mellitus and neonate was born with single lower limb, ambiguous genitalia, and thumb anomalies, and 4 days after birth, the neonate died due to multiple anomalies and imperforated anus.

Sirenomelia is a rare congenital malformation wherein the two lower limbs are fused to give an appearance of a mermaid. It is almost always lethal and is associated with several other defects like anorectal malformations, renal agenesis, umbilical cord vessel abnormalities and gastrointestinal defects. Reporting this case of sirenomelia from our institution in a preterm baby born alive to a primigravida at 36 weeks of gestation, who presented in labour.

After the examination, the diagnosis was G3P2A0L3 35-36 weeks of preterm parturient active phase of first stage + twice previous CS + breech presentation. Then, the patient was planned for an emergency CS at 07.50 am. Born babies with genitalia form was not identified, BW: 2030 grams, BH: 30 cm, Scoring Apgar: 3/5, there are congenital abnormalities in the lower extremity of the baby like mermaid form. After observing the baby’s room, the baby was declared dead at 09.50 am. Conclusion: Sirenomelia is a rare congenital defect that has a fatal impact, characterized by varying degrees of fusion in the lower limbs, thoracolumbar spinal anomalies, sacrococcygeal agenesis, genitourinary and anorectal atresia. Because of the poor prognosis, management of sirenomelia will be very difficult with unexpected results. Key words : Fetal abnormalities, Sirenomelia, Mermaid syndrome.

Dilahirkan bayi dengan JK : tidak teridentifikasi, BB : 2030 gram, PB : 30 cm, A/S : 3/5, terdapat kelainan kongenital pada ekstermitas bawah bayi. Setelah dilakukan observasi di ruang bayi, kemudian bayi dinyatakan meninggal pukul 09.50 WIB.Kesimpulan: Sirenomelia adalah cacat bawaan yang jarang dan menimbulkan dampak yang fatal, ditandai dengan berbagai tingkat fusi pada tungkai bawah, anomali tulang belakang thoracolumbar, agenesis sacrococcygeal, genitourinari dan atresia anorektal. Resumen

Sirenomelia also known as Mermaid syndrome is a rarely encountered fusion anomaly of the caudal region of body often associated with Potter’s facies, single umbilical artery and various visceral abnormalities which make it irreconcilable with life. Here we report a case of sirenomelia delivered in our tertiary care hospital by lower segment cesarean section to a 24 year old third gravida with no previous live issues. No high risk factors could be identified with the mother including diabetes mellitus. Baby was born alive with Potter’s facies. Both the lower limbs were merging into each other like a mermaid’s tail (hence called mermaid syndrome). Sex of the baby could not be identified and the urogenital and anal orifices were absent. Umbilical cord stump had two umbilical arteries. The baby died after 20 hours of life. There appears to be no definitive modality for diagnosing sirenomelia in the antenatal period. However, if a patient has consistently low AFI without any history of leaking per vaginum, high resolution USG or colour Doppler should be done at the earliest to look for the cause.

Resumen

The purpose of this work is to study the image of the mermaid in Danish romantic prose of the first half of the XIX century. In accordance with this goal, the following tasks are formulated: to study the elements of romantic poetics that make up the structure of the image of the mermaid; consider the features of the functioning of the image of the mermaid in the Danish literature of the romantic era. To achieve this goal, we used descriptive, comparative, and contextual analysis methods. The image of the little Mermaid in the Danish romantic tradition combines the functioning of mythological, romantic and individual author's motives, the value space of the fairy tale by G. H. Andersen is built in accordance with Christian axiology.

This paper argues that, for a number of naturalists and lay commentators in the second half of the nineteenth century, evolutionary – especially Darwinian – theory gave new authority to mythical creatures. These writers drew on specific elements of evolutionary theory to assert the existence of mermaids, dragons and other fabulous beasts. But mythological creatures also performed a second, often contrapositive, argumentative function; commentators who rejected evolution regularly did so by dismissing these creatures. Such critics agreed that Darwin's theory legitimized the mythological animal, but they employed this legitimization to undermine the theory itself. The mermaid, in particular, was a focus of attention in this mytho-evolutionary debate, which ranged from the pages of Punch to the lecture halls of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Crossing social boundaries and taking advantage of a range of venues, this debate arose in response to the indeterminate challenge of evolutionary theory. In its discussions of mermaids and dragons, centaurs and satyrs, this discourse helped define that challenge, construing and constructing the meanings and implications of evolutionary theory in the decades following Darwin's publication.

Greenland and Iceland are described with unusual scientific accuracy in the King's Mirror. However this thirteenth-century manuscript contains a few ‘wonders’ that appear more mythological than rational. They include the hafstramb and the margygr, commonly translated respectively as merman and mermaid. The mermaid has a long history in western civilisation. The commonly accepted theory that it evolved from the classical Greek siren is critically examined here. The margygr is shown to be a distinct creature based on independent observation in northern Europe. The characteristics of these observations actually modified the siren of the Physiologus, a bird-woman, into the fish-woman known today. Observations of hafstramb and margygr are explained as superior mirages. These are caused by atmospheric refraction, which distorts and magnifies distant objects. Computer simulations and photographs show that mirages of an orca, a walrus, or even a boulder match almost point for point the descriptions in the King's Mirror. Thus the apparently mythical components in the Greenland account are in fact careful scientific observations.

Dengan perkembangan teknologi yang pesat, saat ini pengguna media sosial khususnya warganet bisa aktif berinteraksi dengan menanggapi informasi atau konten yang mereka dapatkan di media sosial. Disney mengunggah video official teaser trailer film The Little Mermaid di media sosial resmi mereka yakni YouTube, Instagram dan Twitter. Unggahan tersebut memunculkan berbagai reaksi dari warganet hingga menimbulkan kontroversi di kalangan warganet. Hal tersebut dikarenakan oleh perbedaan representasi Ariel di film The Little Mermaid versi live action (2023) dengan versi kartun atau orisinal (1989). Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menganalisis pendapat warganet terkait perbedaan representasi Ariel di film The Little Mermaid serta menganalisis pendapat warganet terkait citra Disney dan film The Little Mermaid. Penelitian ini menggunakan beberapa teori yaitu media sosial, representasi, citra dan semiotika. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan menggunakan metode analisis semiotika dari Ferdinand de Saussure. Data dalam penelitian ini didapatkan melalui observasi dengan bantuan alat pengumpulan komentar dari situs www.exportcomments.com. Observasi pada interaksi warganet pada video official teaser trailer film The Little Mermaid pada media sosial resmi Disney yakni YouTube, Instagram dan Twitter dilakukan pada 10 September 2022 hingga 10 November 2022. Interaksi yang diteliti dalam penelitian ini adalah (1) applause yaitu respon singkat berupa like dan dislike (2) amplification yaitu penyebaran informasi berupa retweet (3) conversation yaitu percakapan di media sosial berupa comment dan reply. Untuk memahami makna pendapat dari warganet lebih dalam, peneliti mengambil tiga komentar dari setiap media sosial lalu menganalisisnya dengan metode analisis semiotika Saussure yang berfokus pada signifier dan signified. Peneliti memilih tiga komentar dari tiap media sosial karena sudah mencangkup beberapa faktor penting yaitu komentar mewakili suara banyak orang, komentar berkaitan dengan representasi serta citra Disney dan film The Little Mermaid, komentar mengandung makna positif atau negatif. Berdasarkan hasil observasi dan analisis pada interaksi warganet di YouTube, Instagram dan Twitter secara keseluruhan mayoritas warganet menunjukan penolakan pada perbedaan representasi Ariel di film The Little Mermaid. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) terdapat perbedaan representasi Ariel antara film The Little Mermaid versi live action dengan versi orisinal atau kartun yang terlihat dari ciri fisik yaitu perbedaan warna kulit, warna dan tekstur rambut, warna mata, hingga perbedaan ras (2) warganet memberikan reaksi berupa like, dislike, share dan comment. Reaksi warganet mengandung makna negatif, positif, kritik dan sarkastik. Akan tetapi, mayoritas dari reaksi warganet bermakna negatif (3) citra yang berlaku untuk Disney dan film The Little Mermaid versi live action (2023) bersifat negatif (4) warganet pada setiap media sosial memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda dalam berkomentar.

Since its modest beginnings in 1971, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has maintained its commitment to “tell a good story, tell it simply, tell it well and tell it often” (Morrow). The story of the evolution and success of this company that creates and produces theatre for young people using puppetry, mask, dance, music and original scripts has been carefully and meticulously documented by Alice Walsh. As Walsh notes in her historiography, Mermaid: A Puppet Theatre in Motion, the company has evolved from a small experimental troupe touring shows in local schools in the Annapolis Valley to one that annually produces theatre for young people internationally. In the 2004/5 season, Mermaid toured twenty-seven states and five provinces and returned to Japan for the seventh time in its history (Mermaid). In fact, the company has toured so continuously and extensively across the globe that in 2001 it earned provincial and national Export Awards usually reserved for the industrial manufacturing sector. In 2005, the company repeated this performance as the recipient of the Canada Export Award. Current artistic director Jim Morrow concedes that, although being recognized as producers of a “product” is somewhat disconcerting to the artistic minds of Mermaid, as Nova Scotian ambassadors of puppet theatre for young people, the company “do[es] export a good energy from Atlantic Canada” (qtd. on 129).

Abstract The mermaid is at once a figure for the hybridity of bodies and, ultimately, for the hybridity of time. In bringing the Victorian mermaid into our contemporary moment with The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock (2018), Imogen Hermes Gowar revisits Victorian questions about the individuality and boundedness of the human body that are even more pressing when environmental catastrophes are revealing our interconnectedness on both spatial and temporal scales. Pairing Gowar’s novel with Edith Nesbit’s Wet Magic (1913) illustrates that Victorian worries about national character and national superiority that arose because of new theories of evolution and geology, as well as the expansion of empire, are reenvisioned in today’s global world through the unequal effects of environmental harm.

Mermaid Theatre’s evolution as one of Canada’s foremost theatres for children and their families owes much of its success to its uncomplicated philosophy: tell a good story, tell it simply, tell it well and tell it often. Since its inception in 1972, Mermaid has been touring its unique brand of storytelling throughout Nova Scotia, Canada and beyond to more than two million children and their parents. The Little Mermaid (1989) has been the subject of much critical discussion but there has been little attention paid to its representation of race. Utilising textual analysis and drawing upon relevant critical paradigms from Disney studies and scholarship of film musicals, this article argues that The Little Mermaid was an implicitly racist narrative. Through analysis of the musical sequences this article shows how The Little Mermaid created a dichotomy between an exclusively white land life that is coded as superior to multiethnic Mer life. While white society on land is represented as postindustrial, well ordered and crime free, the multiethnic culture under the sea is coded not only as sexually unbridled, where promiscuous fish all “get the urge and start to play” with each other’s bodies, but as a thoroughly corrupt society racked with Welfare Queen coded villainesses dealing in black magic. The article contends that the 2023 remake attempts to revise many of the racist tropes of the original song sequences but, in its depiction of a society in which racial difference is devoid of socio-political significance, The Little Mermaid (2023)—especially in its Berkeley inspired dance sequences—reduces racial difference to a mere aesthetic of colour.

The article is based on materials of ethnographic research among Ukrainians who live in the north of the Kulunda steppe (in the south of Western Siberia). onsidered are mythological images and plots about witches, mermaids, infernal dead (vampires), methods of protection from them. Differences were found among local groups of immigrants from the Kiev and Poltava provinces who arrived in Siberia at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. It was found that the image of a mermaid among the Kiev immigrants in Siberia coincides with the beliefs of the Polesie region. The differences are related to the peculiarities of ethnocultural traditions and folk beliefs of the original regions. These features can be markers of the ethnocultural identity of local groups of Siberian Ukrainians.

SUMMARY We present the first 16 months of data returned from a mobile array of 16 freely floating diving instruments, named mermaid for Mobile Earthquake Recording in Marine Areas by Independent Divers, launched in French Polynesia in late 2018. Our 16 are a subset of the 50 mermaid deployed over a number of cruises in this vast and understudied oceanic province as part of the collaborative South Pacific Plume Imaging and Modeling (SPPIM) project, under the aegis of the international EarthScope-Oceans consortium. Our objective is the hydroacoustic recording, from within the oceanic water column, of the seismic wavefield generated by earthquakes worldwide, and the nearly real-time transmission by satellite of these data, collected above and in the periphery of the South Pacific Superswell. This region, characterized by anomalously elevated oceanic crust and myriad seamounts, is believed to be the surface expression of deeply rooted mantle upwellings. Tomographically imaging Earth’s mantle under the South Pacific with data from these novel instruments requires a careful examination of the earthquake-to-mermaid traveltimes of the high-frequency P-wave detections within the windows selected for reporting by the discrimination algorithms on board. We discuss a workflow suitable for a fast-growing mobile sensor database to pick the relevant arrivals, match them to known earthquakes in global earthquake catalogues, calculate their traveltime residuals with respect to global seismic reference models, characterize their quality and estimate their uncertainty. We detail seismicity rates as recorded by mermaid over 16 months, quantify the completeness of our catalogue and discuss magnitude–distance relations of detectability for our network. The projected lifespan of an individual mermaid is 5 yr, allowing us to estimate the final size of the data set that will be available for future study. To prove their utility for seismic tomography we compare mermaid data quality against ‘traditional’ land seismometers and their low-cost Raspberry Shake counterparts, using waveforms recovered from instrumented island stations in the geographic neighbourhood of our floats. Finally, we provide the first analyses of traveltime anomalies for the new ray paths sampling the mantle under the South Pacific.
