Resumen
A gap exists in understanding organizational career ladders for IT professionals. This gap is especially pronounced in organizations externally sourcing IT related activities to vendors, given that technical positions often feed the pipeline to mid-level roles. Based on prior research and qualitative discussions with key informants, this paper discusses the skills necessary for mid-level roles and proposes individual differences in social skills / traits for several key positions (project manager, senior system analyst, and relationship manager). The authors’ research informs IT professionals as to traits that are most strongly related to success within particular roles. Furthermore, the proposed model and the concept of “fit” will help employers and universities improve coaching and counseling regarding career paths, and contribute to the effectiveness of university curriculum. Finally, this research will inform the types of motivational techniques necessary for organizations to incentivize and achieve results in the form of increased performance, lower turnover, and increased satisfaction.

Resumen
Introduction. The study utilizes communicative approach to management, which emphasizes communicative potential of the leader as an important factor of effective business. Communicative potential is understood as a compound of empathy, affiliation tendency and sensitivity to rejection among mid-level managers. Materials and methods. Communicative potential was measured with set of tools by A. Mehrabian. Study sample included 84 mid-level managers from industrial and trade organizations. All respondents have higher education and are involved in management activities over 5 to 12 subordinates. Respondents were 34 female and 50 male, aged 24 to 45. Management experience of respondents varied from 2 to 5 years. Data analysis methods included descriptive methods and comparison of means.Results. The study revealed insufficient level of communicative potential of mid-level managers compared to successful managers. Comparison of genders and work experience showed that sensitivity to rejection is higher among female managers, and also drops down with experience for both men and women. Empathy is also lower for those who are more experienced.Discussion and Conclusions. Communicative potential of mid-level managers needs to be developed through special communication training. The trends revealed I the study can provide the targets for training programs.

Resumen
Abstract: The paper’s main goal is to present an original typology of bureaucrats, situated in intermediate layer of the civil service structure. This specific set of players, the mid-level bureaucrat (MLB), is seen as a strategic group, primarily, because of its connection role and position between the top officials and the policy executors. Despite their relevance and well-known heterogeneity, few studies have explored this diversity and the effects in the policymaking. In order to fulfill this gap and deepen the understanding of the MLBs, this article proposes a typology that includes crucial dimensions, such as profile, background and performance, and, thus, empirically confirms the heterogeneity assumption in the Brazilian federal civil service.

Resumen
We report two experiments on the role of mid-level processes in image segmentation and completion. In the primed matching task of Experiment 1, a cue→prime sequence was presented before the imperative stimulus consisting of target shapes with positive versus negative contour curvature polarity and one versus two axes of mirror symmetry. Priming shapes were included in two composite occlusion displays with the same T-junction information and different geometric features supporting a distinct balance between completion and mosaic solutions. A cue, either congruent or incongruent with targets, preceded the presentation of the composite priming display. Matching performance was affected by primes in the expected direction, while cue congruency participated only in a marginally significant three-way interaction, and prime duration had no effect. In Experiment 2, the cue→prime sequence was replaced by a fixation cross to control for the priming effect obtained in Experiment 1. The study confirmed that contour connectability and curvature polarity are effective structural factors capable of competing with symmetry in mid-level image segmentation and completion processes.

Resumen
In this descriptive study, researchers surveyed choristers ( N = 630) from 16 mid-level collegiate choirs nationwide to investigate their perceptions and behaviors as they related to the strategies used by directors to facilitate ensemble identity. Also investigated were the factors affecting choristers’ dedication to choir and their intentions regarding future enrollment in the choral program. Results indicated that mid-level collegiate choristers hold very diverse opinions regarding the effectiveness of directors’ strategies. While participants indicated that many factors influenced their dedication to choir, those same factors did not directly affect reenrollment. Data indicated that choristers were dedicated when they did not have conflicts; felt committed; had an engaging, dedicated, and encouraging full-time faculty instructor; viewed the repertoire and ensemble as quality; and built friendships. Choristers who wanted to remain in their mid-level ensemble primarily cited the influence of personal and external factors followed by musical factors. Those who wanted to move into a different choir primarily sought the prestige of performing in a top-level choir.
