O presente trabalho apresenta uma tradução comentada de dois contos do autor sírio Rafik Schami, exilado desde 1971 na Alemanha. Com uma literatura socialmente engajada e transcultural, Schami propõe em sua obra um amálgama de tradições e traz em questão o debate acerca da diversidade cultural e da convivência entre as culturas. O objetivo de ressaltar na tradução a alteridade do texto de partida somente pode ser concebido por meio de uma reflexão preliminar acerca dos conceitos de cultura e das relações transculturais. Estas questões jogam luz sobre a importância da atitude estrangeirizante de tradução e abrem espaço para uma discussão sobre seu caráter pós-criativo e como ela se alinha ao projeto sociocultural de Schami.
The thesis at hand presents a commented translation of two narratives by the Syrian author Rafik Schami, who has been living in exile in Germany since 1971. By making use of a transcultural and socially-engaged literature, Schami offers in his writings an amalgam of traditions and brings up for discussion the debate about the cultural diversity and the coexistence amongst cultures. The goal of emphasizing the foreignness in the translation may only be achieved through a preliminary thought about the concepts of culture and the transcultural relations. These matters cast light upon the importance of the foreignizing translation practices and also give place to a discussion about its post-creative nature and how it aligns with Schamis sociocultural project.

Im Zentrum dieser literaturwissenschaftlichen Arbeit steht der „homo migrans“ (Klaus Bade). Dieser ist nicht ein Typus, sondern vielmehr Sammelbegriff verschiedenster Länder, Kulturen und Sprachen querender Figuren der Bewegung: eurokoloniale Rück- und postkoloniale Zuwanderer, Asylbewerber, politische Dissidenten, Glaubensflüchtlinge, Arbeitsmigranten, Familiennachzügler und Aussiedler. Sie alle bewegen sich transnational und häufig interkontinental über und zwischen Grenzräumen. Unter dem Eindruck einer erneuten Beschleunigung globaler Migrationsprozesse ist es daher aus der Perspektive der Literaturwissenschaft entscheidend, sich zeitgenössischen Literaturen zu stellen, deren Autorschaft in genau jener kritischen wie produktiven Dynamik von Ortswechsel, Ent- und Reterritorialisierung, Heimatverlust und Herkunftsentwürfen stattfindet. Anhand ausgewählter Texte der deutschsprachigen Schriftstellerin ungarischer Herkunft Terézia Mora und des mexikanischen Schriftstellers italienischer Herkunft Fabio Morábito soll verdeutlicht werden, mit welch unterschiedlichen auktorialen Vorraussetzungen, produktionsästhetischen Strategien und leitmotivischen Schwerpunkten literarische Gegenwelten der Migration, der Fremd- und Selbsterfahrung erzeugt werden. So entstehen aus dem Innern eines als vielfach fremd empfundenen urbanen Lebensraums Zwischenweltfiguren und Bewegungsmuster, die zu analysieren sich allemal lohnt, wenn es darum gehen soll, mit den Mitteln der Literatur als Speicher von „Lebenswissen“ (Ottmar Ette) zu einem tieferen Verständnis dieser – ökonomisch wie kulturell wie analytisch – immer wichtiger werdenden Wissensressourcen vorzudringen. Die Analyse berücksichtigt bei beiden Autoren das bisher publizierte, literarische Gesamtwerk, setzt aber deutliche Schwerpunkte bei Terézia Moras Roman 'Alle Tage' und bei Fabio Morábitos Erzählband 'También Berlín se olvida', unter besonderer Berücksichtigung seiner umfangreichen, für das vorliegende Thema sehr ergiebigen Lyrik.
The main focus of this master’s thesis in literary studies is the ‘homo migrans’ (Klaus Bade). This entity is not a uniform archetype of migration, but a conglomeration of subjects who traverse a diverse range of countries, cultures and languages: the eurocolonial and postcolonial migrant, the asylum seeker, the dissident, the labor or family migrant, the refugee, the ethnic repatriate. They all share transnational and often intercontinental paths of trans-border movement. In light of the perpetual acceleration of global migration, it is of crucial importance that the humanities confront and discuss contemporary literature, which deals with the critical and productive dynamics of delocalization, de- and reterritorialization, the loss of homeland and the multiple constructions of belonging. In this thesis, selected works by the German-Hungarian author Terézia Mora and the Mexican-Italian author Fabio Morábito are analyzed to demonstrate the diverse auctorial conditions, aesthetic strategies and leitmotifs that produce literary counterworlds of migration, oscillating conceptions of identity and alienation. From within urban spaces that are oftentimes estranging, perspectives emerge of liminal identities that navigate between different worlds. As the analyses of Mora and Morábito illustrate, modes of identity and movement are literary expressions of ‘Lebenswissen’ (Ottmar Ette). They are therefore an invaluable contribution to our understanding of migration, in an economic, cultural, as well as analytical sense. The thesis takes into account the complete series of literary works that the two authors published until 2006. However, its focal points are Terézia Mora’s novel 'Alle Tage', as well as the short stories of 'También Berlín se olvida' and the lyrical oeuvre of Fabio Morábito.

This thesis explores the capacity of literature about flight and migration to contribute to shaping a community of solidarity in contemporary German society. It analyses three novels published after the 2015 refugee “crisis” – Ohrfeige by Abbas Khider, Gott ist nicht schüchtern by Olga Grjasnowa and Gehen, ging, gegangen by Jenny Erpenbeck. To examine the impact of such literature on readers, I apply Rita Felski’s theory about the uses of literature, and in particular in relation to the first two novels, its capacity to create shock and deliver social knowledge. In Ohrfeige, I argue that ‘shock’ is used as a strategy to arouse uneasiness, in order to encourage thoughtful listening and understanding about the frustration experienced by asylum seekers. In Gott ist nicht schüchtern, readers are encouraged to expand their empathy while negotiating traumatic stories of war, torture and despair. In the interpretation of Gehen, ging, gegangen, I apply the theories of memory studies scholars such as Aleida Assmann and Michael Rothberg to highlight the parallels between refugees’ memories of fleeing and Germans’ memories of the Nazi and East German communist past. These parallel memory spheres resonate with each other and can lead to critical self-reflection among the German and European communities. Across these three chapters, this thesis argues that literature about flight and migration has the power to evoke empathy towards refugees and strengthen solidarity across differences in society.

Diese Dissertation untersucht anhand der Auseinandersetzung mit acht deutschsprachigen Romanen aus der jüngeren Vergangenheit, in denen Migrationsbewegungen thematisiert werden, wie die Auswirkungen eigener und fremder Mobilität durch Migration literarisch gestaltet werden können (in den analysierten Romanen handelt es sich dabei um Migrationen zwischen Südosteuropa und den deutschsprachigen Ländern). Dies geschieht insbesondere mit Blick auf das Zusammenspiel der präsentierten Entwürfe von ‚Identitätsarbeit‘ einerseits und der Inszenierung der subjektiven Wahrnehmung und Gestaltung von sozialen Räumen durch die ProtagonistInnen andererseits. Dazu werden die Rahmenkategorien Migration, Identität und Raum unter Berücksichtigung eines literaturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisinteresses und ihrer Bedeutung für das bearbeitete Korpus eingehend betrachtet, um anschließend im Rahmen von Textanalysen zwei großen Fragen nachzugehen: Wie und mit welchen Mitteln in der Literatur Räume im Kontext von Migration entworfen und dabei gerade migrantische Identitäten räumlich inszeniert werden, und welche Implikationen diese Inszenierungen für mögliche Aussagen über Identitätsarbeit in von Mobilität geprägten Kontexten haben können.
