Abstract Analytical methods used by commercial assay laboratories have improved enormously in recent years. Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry methods now report analyses for half of the periodic table with exceptional detection limits and precision. It is becoming commonplace for mining companies to use such methods routinely for the analysis of drill samples throughout mineral deposits. Improvements in software and computing power now allow rapid interrogation of upward of 100,000 assay samples. Geochemical analyses are qu

We have provided new insights into the controlling factors of elastic properties in continental carbonate rocks and introduced an applicable model for acoustic-velocity predictions in such a medium. Petrophysical properties (porosity, permeability, P- and S-wave velocities) from laboratory measurements have been coupled with thin-section observations and characterizations, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. A major achievement is the establishment of the link between the mineralogical composition and the P- and S-wave velocity dispersion at a given porosity. This reflects the subtle interpl

The bulk mineralogy and uptake ability of four samples (SA1 to SA4) of clinoptilolite-bearing tuffs from Samos Island, Greece were investigated. The semi-quantitative mineralogical analyses of the samples were determined by powder-XRD (PXRD). The chemical composition of the samples analysed by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), reflected the bulk mineralogy of the samples. The semi-quantitative mineralogy of the samples was found to be in good agreement with their chemical compositions. The uptake ability was measured using the ammonium saturation method (AMAS). The samples consist of clino

Mortars from different stratigraphic units at Portilla Castle (Alava, North Spain) have been analyzed for mineralogical characterization before radiocarbon dating. The mortar binder at Portilla Castle is composed not only of neoformation calcite but also of double-layered hydroxide (LDH) minerals such as hydrotalcite and hydrocalumite. The mineralogy of several fractions of the binder has been analyzed to determine the granulometric distribution of minerals in the binder. The continuous monitoring of mineralogy during the extraction of different grain size fractions has been performed by using

Municipal sludge is being increasing considered as a source of raw material in the modern sustainable model policies. This kind of waste exhibits a complex composition mainly due to the sewage water source and the treatment processes. The aim of this work was to study the mineralogy and microstructural aspects of the raw sludge and its mineralogical transformations with calcination in order to obtain a better understanding of its behavior as a raw material in civil construction. Samples of raw sludge and sludge calcined at 700 °C, 800 °C and 900 °C were studied by X-ray diffraction and scannin

The characteristics of process mineralogy of some pyrite cinders were studied with optics microscopes, scanning electron microscope, and x-ray diffraction. The chemical composition and the phase composition of the pyrite cinders were analyzed. The occurrence and chemical phase analysis of molybdenum of iron, copper, and gold were also studied. The behaviors of various minerals and mineralogical factors affecting the separation had been explained clearly. The investigation results were favorable to reasonable selection of technological process.

Abstract. Recent developments in the application of micro-energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry mapping (µ-EDXRF) have opened up new opportunities for fast geoscientific analyses. Acquiring spatially resolved spectral and chemical information non-destructively for large samples of up to 20 cm length provides valuable information for geoscientific interpretation. Using supervised classification of the spectral information, mineral distribution maps can be obtained. In this work, thin sections of plutonic rocks are analyzed by µ-EDXRF and classified using the supervised classificatio

As part of a study investigating the influence of mineralogical variability in a sediment hosted copper–cobalt deposit in the Democratic Republic of Congo on flotation performance, the flotation of nine sulphide ore samples was investigated through laboratory batch kinetics tests and quantitative mineral analyses. Using a range of ore samples from the same deposit the influence of mineralogy on flotation performance was studied. Characterisation of the samples through QEMSCAN showed that bornite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and carrollite are the main copper-bearing sulphide minerals while carrol

To understand the main properties of cement, a ubiquitous material, a sound description of its chemistry and mineralogy, including its reactivity in aggressive environments and its mechanical properties, is vital. In particular, the porosity distribution and associated sample carbonation, both of which affect cement's properties and durability, should be quantified accurately, and their kinetics and mechanisms of formation known both in detail andin situ. When performing a petrophysical analysis, an accurate understanding of the mineralogy of the formations of interest is important for two main reasons. Firstly, the mineralogy of the formations controls the matrix density, which is fundamental in the evaluation of porosity using conventional methods. Secondly, an accurate estimate of the fraction of clay minerals present in the formation is essential in accurately correcting resistivity-based saturation estimates for the effects of excess clay conductivity.Accurately evaluating the mineralogy in formations containing both gas and radioactive mi

This paper demonstrates a new method to classify mineral phases in 3D images of particulate materials obtained by X-ray computed micro-tomography (CT), here named mounted single particle characterization for 3D mineralogical analysis (MSPaCMAn). The method allows minimizing the impact of imaging artefacts that make the classification of voxels inaccurate and thus hinder the use of CT to characterize natural particulate materials. MSPaCMAn consists of (1) sample preparation as particle dispersions; (2) image processing optimized towards the labelling of individual particles in the sample; (3) p
