Resumen
In today’s America, not every child starts on a level playing field, and very few children move ahead based solely on hard work or talent. Generational poverty and a lack of cultural capital hold many students back, robbing them of the opportunity to move up professionally and socially. Children of immigrants are especially at-risk because, in addition to facing poverty, race, geographical location or economic disadvantages, they are also confronted with failure due to their limited or non-existent English proficiency. This study focuses on the degree to which teachers in a mid-sized urban school district take into consideration the individual needs of immigrant children in the process of their education. The study also examines the preparation teachers have had to equip them with knowledge of best practices in teaching immigrant children, and the relationship between teachers’ practices, beliefs, and their demographic and personal characteristics (age, gender, years of experience, level of education, etc.). Quantitative data was collected via a survey. Interviews with teachers and one central office administrator provided data for the qualitative section of the study. The findings revealed that teachers, in general, appeared to lack knowledge of specific policies for mainstreaming immigrant students into general education classrooms; their use of effective teaching practices for working with immigrant children were limited; and most of the teachers had not participated actively in professional development that focused on teaching immigrant children.

Resumen
Purpose Little is known about how experiential entrepreneurship education approaches contribute toward enhancing the engagement of students in the learning process. Using a purposive and convenience sample of individual student reflective journals, the purpose of this paper is to critically evaluate how the process of constructive misalignment enhances the level of student engagement through a team-based experiential entrepreneurship education assessment. Design/methodology/approach Data were gathered from a purposive and convenience sample of reflective journals, an individual “performance assessment” element of three Masters-level courses (courses 1, 2 and 3) that included an “active” group business ideas generation presentation and a report. These texts were analyzed through content analysis that critically evaluates and summarizes the content of data and their messages. Findings While expected learning outcomes included teamwork and communication, the higher levels of active learning and student engagement related to innovation and generating a business idea was much more modest. Rather, the study finds that significant learning opportunities were apparent when students experienced unexpected aspects of constructive misalignment, such as linguistic–cultural challenges, nonparticipation and freeriding. Originality/value Building on Biggs’ (2003) model of constructive alignment in course design and delivery/assessment, this paper elucidates various unexpected and surprising aspects. It suggests that constructive misalignment could provide major learning opportunities for students and is thus more likely in these team contexts where entrepreneurship students experience constructive misalignment. Educators should, therefore, continue to design experiential entrepreneurship courses and their performance assessments through team-based approaches that achieve higher levels of engagement as well as more active learning.

Resumen
The African American male student-athlete occupies one of the most peculiar positions in American society. While lauded for their sport performance, they are often viewed as problematic in the broader society. While their performance generates millions of dollars for universities and the NCAA, for most, their labor often produces comparatively little personal gain. While they are recruited as student-athletes, they soon realize that the demands of their athletic commitment renders them athlete-students. Many outside of sport would argue that this is a choice and an informed decision. But we argue much of this is a consequence of the mis-education of the African American student-athlete. We examine this phenomenon through the lens of Critical Race Theory to provide an alternative view of the issues faced by African American student-athletes and suggest an alternative pedagogy that might be investigated to meet their needs.

Resumen
The expansion of education all over the world is expected to improve economic and social development. However, the oversupply of educated labor force might bring unfavorable consequences for the labor market and long-run growth prospects. In this regard the purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, it aims at summarizing the main channels and mechanisms through which education–job mismatch could impact the changes of per capita income. Second, the study presents empirical evidence on that impact by differentiating between qualification mismatch among workers having completed tertiary education and those with upper secondary education. The sample comprises the EU member countries between 2000 and 2019. The results suggest that whereas the higher percentage of the properly matched labor force increases the steady-state level of per capita output for both educational levels being considered, the effect of qualification mismatch is either negative or insignificant. There is some evidence that overeducation among higher education graduates exhibits a stronger negative effect on economic activity in comparison with overeducation among workers with upper secondary education.

Resumen
Abstract This paper deals with the effects of education-job (mis)match on the earnings of higher education graduates in the context of higher education expansion and different phases of the economic cycle in the Czech Republic in 2006–2018. It aims to contribute to knowledge about the effects of education-job (mis)match on earnings in two ways. First, it concentrates on both the vertical and the horizontal dimensions of education-job (mis)match. Second, it considers the effects of contextual variables: the share of graduates in the population and the unemployment rate of graduates. The paper is based on assumptions derived from assignment theory. The authors use data of graduates’ self-evaluation collected in national and international graduate surveys – REFLEX, REFLEX 2010, REFLEX 2013, and Absolvent 2018. The data for contextual variables come from Eurostat and the Czech Statistical Office. The analyses focus on graduates four to five years after graduation. They are examined both as a whole and in groups based on the field of study using the method of weighted least squares. Overeducation usually has significant negative effects on earnings. Horizontal match effects are contradictory. The education-job (mis)match effects are relatively small in comparison with other factors. The role of contextual variables is mostly predictable, however, some exceptions uncover specifics of the labour market in the Czech Republic. There are important differences among groups of graduates in different fields of study.

Resumen
Background: The implantation of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) leads to the specialization of nurses in this surgical field. However, there is no standard curriculum of MIS Nursing in Europe. Spanish and Portuguese nurses are inexperienced and have poor training in MIS. For that, a blended learning course for nursing education in MIS (Lapnurse) has been developed. This work aims to detail the course design and to preliminary validate by experts its online theoretical module. Methods: Lapnurse consists of an online module with nine theoretical lessons and a face-to-face module with three practical lessons. The e-learning environment created to provide the online module, with didactic contents based on surgical videos and innovative 3D designs, has been validated by two technicians (functionality) and four nurses with teaching experience in MIS (usability and content). Results: The E-learning platform meets all technical requirements, provides whole and updated multimedia contents correctly applied for educational purposes, incorporates interactivity with 3D designs, and has an attractive, easy-to-use and intuitive design. Conclusions: The lack of knowledge in MIS of Spanish and Portuguese nurses could be addressed by the blended learning course created, Lapnurse, where the e-learning environment that provides theoretical training has obtained a positive validation.

Resumen
Education Management Information System (EMIS) is an organized group of information and documentation services that collects, stores, processes, analyzes and disseminates information on the planning and management of the education system. Each country tend to have own EMIS because of the differences in local systems of education and training. EMIS in the field of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), or TVET-MIS, is a consolidated EMIS for timely access to high quality information. The analysis showed that in all the countries under study the owner of EMIS in the field of vocational education is the Ministry of Education. Data is collected in the vast majority of countries, with exception of Brazil and Pakistan, from public vocational education institutions, and cover the formal education sector. Indicators contained in EMIS for professional (vocational) education provide the possibility of international comparisons, methodological soundness and simplicity of making statistical reports; they provide the user with the opportunity to generate the necessary information independently (an example is Open EMIS Core – TVET-MIS), form the extended database of registers with wide possibilities for searching the necessary information, tracing the trajectory of employment of graduates of professional (vocational) education institutions. These systems are characterized by: the availability of indicators of the effectiveness of the system of professional (vocational) education (examples are MLDS, Maryland and TVET-MIS – Career Tech, Ohio, USA), the coverage of professional (vocational) education institutions in public and private sectors, the successful coordination of the system of professional (vocational) education with the stakeholders (an example is NEMIS system in Pakistan), a comprehensive electronic system for collecting, managing and analyzing data from the system of professional (vocational ) education, despite economic instability in a country (an example is TAALIM system, Afghanistan), coverage of the informal professional (vocational) education sector, self-contained computerized data collection system that uses a centralized procedure for extracting primary data on one date for all institutions (an example is SISTEC system, Brazil).

Resumen
Study Design: Systematic review. Objective: To date there is no consensus among surgeons as to what defines an MIS-TLIF (transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion using minimally invasive spine surgery) compared to an open or mini-open TLIF. This systematic review aimed to examine the MIS-TLIF techniques reported in the recent body of literature to help provide a definition of what constitutes the MIS-TLIF, based on the consensus of the majority of surgeons. Methods: We created a database of articles published about MIS-TLIF between 2010 and 2018. We evaluated the technical components of the MIS-TLIF including instruments and incisions used as well the order in which key steps are performed. Results: We could identify several patterns for MIS-TLIF performance that seemed agreed upon by the majority of MIS surgeons: use of paramedian incisions; use of a tubular retractor to perform a total facetectomy, decompression, and interbody cage implantation; and percutaneous insertion of the pedicle-screw rod constructs with intraoperative imaging. Conclusion: Based on this review of the literature, the key features used by surgeons performing MIS TLIF include the use of nonexpandable or expandable tubular retractors, a paramedian or lateral incision, and the use of a microscope or endoscope for visualization. Approaches using expandable nontubular retractors, those that require extensive subperiosteal dissection from the midline laterally, or specular-based retractors with wide pedicle to pedicle exposure are far less likely to be promoted as an MIS-based approach. A definition is necessary to improve the communication among spine surgeons in research as well as patient education.

Resumen
A combination of educational research and theory of media is applied in order to understand the use of new digital media among Danish high school students. By analyzing interviews with students and teachers the authors present an interpretation of the students’ media use and its consequences. One of the main results is that the use of the new media leads to problems of inattentiveness and lack of concentration related to different forms of media-addiction. The authors present an explanation of how the students’ attention is drawn away from the teaching and of what they focus on instead. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the use of media such as Messenger not only redirects the attention of the students, it also deconstructs the distinction between formal and non-formal learning. Partly contrary to what the students and their teachers say themselves, it is suggested on more theoretical grounds that a new kind of deconstructing learning process is occurring, in which the teacher is the one most excluded. Yet it is concluded that an adequate response to the problems of media-addiction and the emergence of new kinds of inclusion and exclusion calls for further media didactic reflections.

Resumen
172 Background: The NCCN is implementing a performance improvement initiative using breast cancer (BC) practice data from NCCN MIs to improve institutional delivery of GLC and identify tailored opportunities for improving efficiency and quality of care delivered. Methods: This initiative includes evaluation of baseline GLC, review of non-concordant (NC) cases, design of tailored institutional interventions, and post-intervention evaluation of GLC and reasons for NC. BC patients presenting from July 2007 to March 2009 at 11 NCCN MIs were included in the baseline review. Six Category 1 GLC and 3 ASCO/NCCN quality measures evaluating adjuvant chemotherapy (CTX), endocrine therapy (ET), and radiation (XRT) were reviewed. GLC was assessed using the NCCN Outcomes database. Results: Aggregate GLC across all measures was 90% (MI range 66% to 100%). Review of NC cases was used to develop tailored OFI interventions. Three MIs are focusing on clinical practice improvement via provider education and feedback and integration of electronic medical record flags for treatment consideration. Nine MIs are working on improving access and reducing time-to-treatment lags. Currently, half of MIs are implementing and half are evaluating OFI interventions. Conclusions: This program supports data-driven QI efforts at MIs with the goal of improving efficiency and quality of care delivered to patients at participating sites, as well as serving as a model for data-driven quality improvement programs.
