This thesis develops a series of knowledge-oriented physics-based motion planning algorithms for grasping and manipulation in cluttered an uncertain environments. The main idea is to use high-level knowledge-based reasoning to define the manipulation constraints that define the way how robot should interact with the objects in the environment. These interactions are modeled by incorporating the physics-based model of rigid body dynamics in planning. The first part of the thesis is focused on the techniques to integrate the knowledge with physics-based motion planning. The knowledge is represe

We present simulations and continuum calculations of the rheology and structure of vortex matter confined to flow in narrow channels. First, through the use of Langevin dynamics we perform two-dimensional Couette flow simulations of the vortex liquid in a homogeneous magnetic field. In this sheared geometry we report wall slip at the channel boundary for high shear rates. A result that contrasts with the Newtonian constitutive relation suggested by Marchetti and Nelson(Marchetti, M. C. & Nelson, D. R. Phys. Rev. B 42 , 9938 (1990)). The goal of this thesis is to contribute to the ambitious program of the foundation of developing statistical physics using chaos. We build a deterministic model of Brownian motion and provide a microscpoic derivation of the Fokker-Planck equation. Since the Brownian motion of a particle is the result of the competing processes of diffusion and dissipation, we create a model where both diffusion and dissipation originate from the same deterministic mechanism - the deterministic interaction of that particle with its environment. We show that standard diffusion which is the basis of the Fokker-P

The relationship between precipitation and atmospheric vertical motion is investigated over the globe. By combining and averaging precipitation rates within small ranges of vertical motion, the mean precipitation rate is found to vary smoothly with vertical motion. The relationship is modelled with a simple function that assumes zero precipitation for subsidence and linearly increasing precipitation for ascending motion. Function parameters are computed from NCEP reanalysis data individually for every grid point and every calendar month. Variations in the slope account for geographical and sea

We discuss local constraints for the perception of three-dimensional binocular motion in a geometric-probabilistic framework. Making 2D models is easy (in fact 4 new ones are included in this thesis), but we should be drawing parallels with experimental data for behaviour in animal systems and we should be cautious indeed when drawing conclusions, based on those models. The dynamics of cross-linked polymers under stress, such as those thatmake up rubber, are still not well understood. After data analysis, the results show that the measurements successfully captured this flow information. Two important areas of physics are spontaneous pattern formation and droplet motion on surfaces. These two areas can be brought together since the texture of a surface can influence its wetting properties. Therefore by controlling the factors that determine the length scales of the patterns during spontaneous pattern formation, it is possible to design surfaces with very specific wetting properties. This was used to create surfaces that could direct the motion of sessile water droplets. Patterned surfaces with micro-wrinkled surface structures were prepared by thermally evaporating thin Alumin
