Resumen
AbstractA method of infrared (IR) analysis for quantitative determination of tubular halloysite in mixtures with kaolinite was investigated for drill hole samples collected during an assessment of paper-coating kaolin resources at the Mount Hope Kaolin Deposit, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. Tubular, dehydrated halloysite from the deposit does not readily intercalate formamide, and the proportion of tubes in <2 μm size-fractions was determined initially from scanning electron micrographs. For samples showing a range of tube contents, a strong correlation between IR spectral response and counts of halloysite tubes was established using partial leastsquares analysis. This provided a rapid technique suitable for routine determination of tubular halloysite in samples from the Mount Hope deposit. Although the universality of the method remains to be tested, it offers an alternative approach to other analytical techniques for assessment of kaolin deposits where the presence of halloysite is suspected.

Resumen
In June 2012 representatives from the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS) travelled to the Caribbean island of Trinidad to convene a Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) workshop. This was conducted in conjunction with the Department of Surgical Sciences, part of the University of the West Indies. The workshop was held at Mount Hope Women's Hospital, Port of Spain. This is one of Trinidad's largest tertiary hospitals, housing 340 general purpose beds with a large-volume acute intake. Discussions with local residents revealed that during a 24-hour period at Mount Hope, it is not uncommon to perform multiple emergency laparotomies for penetrating abdominal trauma in the form of gunshot and stabbing. Caribbean junior surgical trainees therefore develop confidence in managing these challenging cases at an early stage in their training.

Resumen
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The researcher’s purpose for writing this paper is first to tell the story of one particular community of faith called the Mount Hope church. In doing so, the spotlight would be placed on the plight and challenges of the Mitchells Plain township life, conditions and ministry. Secondly, the research was seeking to challenge the status quo of a serious lack of human dignity by showing how and why it needs to be restored. Lastly, to then answer the research question: “How does one minister to marginalized and outcast people in such a way that their human dignity is restored?” The researcher has furnished a definition and description of the background of the word township as well as follow four tasks of doing Practical Theology as reflected in the work of one scholar Richard R Osmer. The descriptive empirical section has highlighted the researcher’s life story as key to the research, provided statistical details of the research context as well as individual testimony accounts of lives that have been transformed. The normative section has shown the importance of the prophetic mandate to discern the will of God for the research context. In the interpretive section the researcher has facilitated a dialogue between the descriptive and the normative sections to clarify the importance of system sensitive leadership. The pragmatic section is the last of the four sections where the researcher has shown the strategic output of the Mount Hope church through its leadership. The researcher has concluded by bringing all the chapters together again for the purpose of answering the research question: “How does one minister to marginalized and outcast people in such a way that their human dignity is restored?” It is clear that once they discover the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ and the acceptance and guidance of a faith community, they are on the road to restored human dignity.

Rural communities continue to consolidate and close schools across the country at an alarming rate. Debates surrounding school district consolidation have been known to cause deep tension throughout many communities. It is widely held that, schools in rural areas not only provide education, but create jobs, provide entertainment, and bolster social relationships within a region. Social relationships are necessary for the health and cohesiveness of any community. This in-depth case study of the rural community of Mount Hope identifies the change in cohesion over time. This research shows that there is a relationship between the closing and opening of the school and levels of community cohesion amongst some, but not all, of the groups. The key findings are that a range of social activities not directly related to the school have been affected by the closure. Personal interviews were conducted with local officials, school employees, group leaders, parents, and community members of Mount Hope. This study is relevant to planners, school administrators, and educators alike, as local communities across the state debate the value of district consolidation. The findings are beneficial to communities and school districts to help determine what is best for a community when considering school consolidation or closure.

Resumen
Bibliography: leaves 175-183.
Missionary endeavours in the Eastern Cape were characterized by African resistance to the Christian Gospel during the first half of the nineteenth century. Current explanations for this rejection point to the opposition of the chiefs, the association that the listeners made between the missionaries and their white oppressors, and the threat to communal solidarity. This thesis aims to see if these explanations fully reveal the reasons for Xhosa resistance to Christianity by examining African perceptions of the missionaries and their message at the Wesleyan mission stations of Mount Coke and Butterworth for the period 1825-35. The research is based upon the Wesleyan Missionary Society correspondence and missionary journals and is corroborated and supplemented by travellers' records and later studies in African religion and social anthropology. The economic, social, and religious background of the Wesleyans is described to show how the Christian message was limited to their culture and system of thought. Concepts of divinity, morality, and the afterlife are compared to demonstrate the vast differences between Wesleyan and African worldviews and the inability of the missionaries to overcome these obstacles and to show the relevance of Christianity to African material and spiritual needs. Various types of perceptions are surveyed to show that, though the missionaries were respected for their spiritual role, their character and lifestyle presented an unappealing model of the Christian life. The threat that the missionary message posed to the structure and functioning of African communities is examined as well as African perceptions of these implications. A theory of conversion is advanced which reveals a consistent pattern of association with the missionaries for reasons of self-interest, exposure to the Gospel over a lengthy period of time, and finally conversion. The missionary-African contact of this period is thus characterized as the encounter between two systems of thought which did not engage.

Seafloor digital imagery and bathymetric data are used to evaluate the volcanic characteristics of the 85°E segment of the ultraslow spreading Gakkel Ridge (9 mm yr-¹). Imagery reveals that ridges and volcanic cones in the axial valley are covered by numerous, small-volume lava flows, including a few flows fresh enough to have potentially erupted during the 1999 seismic swarm at the site. The morphology and distribution of volcaniclastic deposits observed on the seafloor at depths of ~3800 m, greater than the critical point for steam generation, are consistent with having formed by explosive discharge of magma and CO² from source vents. Microearthquakes recorded on a 200 m aperture seismometer network deployed on the Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse active mound, a seafloor massive sulfide on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 26°N, are used to image subsurface processes at the hydrothermal system. Over nine-months, 32,078 local microearthquakes (ML = -1) with single-phase arrivals cluster on the southwest flank of the deposit at depths <125 m. Microearthquakes characteristics are consistent with reaction-driven cracking driven by anhydrite deposition in the shallow secondary circulation system. Exit fluid temperatures recorded at diffuse vents on the mound during the microearthquake study are used to explore linkages between seismicity and venting.

Resumen
Abstract As social, civic, and global anxieties mount, the need to overcome despair has become urgent. This chapter draws on St. Thomas Aquinas and virtue ethics to propose the theological virtue of hope as a powerful source of rejuvenation. It argues for the necessary place of theology in reflection on hope due to the religious origins of hope as a central human aspiration and virtue capable of resilience. The virtue of hope, it is suggested, sustains us from the sloth and despair that threaten amid injustice, tragedy, and death; it provides an ultimate meaning and transcendent purpose to our lives; and it encourages us “on the way” (in via) with the prospect of eternal beatitude. Rather than degrading this life and world, hope ordains earthly goods to our eschatological end, forming us to pursue justice and social tasks with a resilience and vitality that transcend widespread cynicism and disillusionment. While hope ultimately seeks the kingdom of God, it can be concluded that it contributes richly to personal happiness and the common good, even in this life, and that this may be affirmed by those who do not share the theological premises.

Resumen
Uneven action characterized Federal attacks all along the Union line. In James B. McPherson’s Seventeenth Corps, which held the center of Grant’s line, the only serious attack was conducted by Thomas E. Ransom’s brigade and it failed to come closely to grips with the entrenched Confederates on its sector. In John A. McClernand’s Thirteenth Corps, holding the left of the Union line, all that was done was to move the three divisions of the corps forward to reach positions from which they could launch a serious attack. This was all that seemed possible given the rugged terrain and heavy Confederate artillery fire. The Federals had not conducted a general attack or mounted a serious effort to find and break through weak points in the enemy defence line. Their enthusiasm had dampened somewhat but they still retained strong confidence in ultimate success. The effect of the Union repulse of May 19, however, was dramatic among the Confederates. It wiped away most of the demoralization caused by their defeats in Grant’s overland march and made them much more confident of holding Vicksburg until the Confederate government could mount an effort to relieve them from outside.

This chapter explores the influence of singing in Mount Zion Baptist Church on Armstrong’s development as a musician.Although we do not know exactly what Armstrong sang at his church there are transcriptions of the singing in New Hope Baptist Church just across the Mississippi River in Gretna. The transcriptions reveal a similar blues influenced tonality to the street songs and barbershop cadences sung elsewhere in New Orleans. This chapter explores the pentatonic tendency of melody in African American song; whereas the supporting lines tend to contain chromatic intervals and give rise to chromatic harmony.

This chapter follows Glenville and Mount Pleasant from World War II into the early post-war years. As increasing numbers of African Americans moved into these historically heavily-Jewish neighbourhoods, racial tensions escalated and the phenomenon of panic selling first emerged, even as upwardly mobile black buyers expressed satisfaction and hope at their expanded housing choices. Into the early post-war period, interracial community councils seeking to stabilize population turnover counter-mobilized against exclusionary white homeowners’ associations attempting to choke off black housing access. Jewish residents were more active in these interracial neighbourhood mobilizations, but at the same time Jews departed for the suburbs at above-average rates, to the point where their demographic and institutional presence had diminished to an insignificant point by 1950.

Resumen
On June 19, Johnston fell back to a new position anchored on the twin peaks of Kennesaw Mountain just northwest of Marietta. It was the strongest position he had yet taken in the campaign and it would hold the Federal for two weeks. Confederate earthworks became very deep and sophisticated along this line, although there were a few salient which protruded toward the Federals and offered some hope of a successful attack. At one of those salients, Cheatham’s Hill, Confederate engineers made a mistake in siting the line which left it vulnerable to a close approach by the Federals. Efforts to flank the Confederate left were stymied by timely movements of troops. Frustrated and worried that the delay might lead to the transfer of reinforcements from the Army of Tennessee to Lee’s army in Virginia, Sherman decided to mount a major frontal attack.

Resumen
In the summer of 1660, a strange phenomenon followed Mount Vesuvius’s eruption: red or black crosses started appearing on people’s linen, clothes, and even limbs. Since the Neapolitan people feared that the crosses were a supernatural occurrence and a terrible omen, the political and ecclesiastical leaders promoted the publication of books providing reasonable and pious explanations of the phenomenon. Among the authors who intervened in the debate over the nature of the crosses were Carlo Calà (who was hoping to gain favor with both the Viceroy and the Pope) and Athanasius Kircher, one of the leading protagonists of early modern Catholic culture. This chapter explains how the common interest in the crosses and Kircher’s scientific curiosity for fossils and giants provided Carlo with the opportunity to approach Kircher and make him aware of the case of his ancestor Giovanni, with the hope that the illustrious Catholic intellectual might support it.

Resumen
With the advent of higher signaling frequencies on today’s motherboard, evolution suggests that the electronic industry is near a phase transition of going from through hole mount to surface mount connectors. Current computer infrastructure supports assembly of motherboards using through hole mount connectors from a historical standpoint. This legacy has led placement equipment manufacturers to develop fabrication machines that do not consider long, thin devices such as a PCI or DIMM connector. The reassessment of the world’s method of motherboard manufacturing presents a challenge. Hence the question arises, what is the realistic lifetime of a through hole mount connector and what are the assembly and reliability issues associated with a proposed replacement such as a surface mount connector. This paper addresses the basic reliability concerns of a long, thin, surface mount PCI connector both with, and without retention features.

Resumen
Insertion mount, or trough hole, technology has historically been considered a fatigue-free method for soldering components to printed circuit boards; recently, though, applications implementing this technology have experienced use lifetimes sufficient to warrant investigation into fatigue failure. Although much research has been done into failure mechanisms and rapid failure prediction methods for surface mount components, there have been on such studies in the area of insertion mount technology. Therefore, this paper will be the first in a series of two papers introducing a rapid failure assessment approach for components fixed using insertion mount technology. The purpose of this paper will be to introduce the methodology used in this study, as well as to provide a method for determining the critical lead forces quickly and accurately.

Resumen
There has been an increasing focus on surface mount technology, and the miniaturization of electronic assemblies. However, wave soldering still remains an integral part of the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) assembly process. Hole fill is an important aspect in wave soldering. It is caused by the capillary action of molten alloys, as the PCB traverses across the molten wave. The advent of Pb-free materials has tightened the process windows for wave soldering. This is primarily because Pb-free alloys have higher melting points. One way to enhance hole filling action is to increase the operating temperatures of the molten wave. This step, however, could result in the disintegration of surface mount or through hole devices, board discoloration and warpage. Flux selection is an important process step for Pb-free wave soldering as it enhances hole-fill and cleans the soldering surface of the oxides prior to the PCB hitting the wave. It is critical to use the ‘optimal’ flux in Pb-free wave soldering processes. The objective of this study is to determine the ‘best’ flux for the Pb-free wave soldering of 2.16mm (0.085″) thick PCBs with Ni/Au surface finish. The Pb-free solder in this application is SAC387 (95.5%Sn, 3.8%Ag, and 0.7% Cu) with VOC-free no clean water based flux. Under different conveyor speeds, the experimentation evaluates the ‘best’ flux among three candidates. Complete (100%) inspection using X-ray laminography equipment detects the percentage of hole fill and other defects such as bridging, flux residue, and solder balling. The ‘best’ flux should have the least number of defects.

Resumen
The Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management Office was established in 1982 to carry out the federal government’s responsibilities for low-level radioactive (LLR) waste management in Canada. In this capacity, the Office operates programs to characterize, delineate, decontaminate and consolidate historic LLR waste for interim and long-term storage. The Office is currently the proponent of the Port Hope Area Initiative; a program directed at the development and implementation of a safe, local long-term management solution for historic LLR waste in the Port Hope area. A legal agreement between the Government of Canada and the host community provides the framework for the implementation of the Port Hope Project. Specifically, the agreement requires that the surface of the long-term LLR waste management facility be “conducive to passive and active recreational uses such as soccer fields and baseball diamonds.” However, there are currently no examples of licensed LLR waste management facilities in Canada that permit recreational use. Such an end use presents challenges with respect to engineering and design, health and safety and landscape planning. This paper presents the cover system design, the environmental effects assessment and the landscape planning processes that were undertaken in support of the recreational end use of the Port Hope long-term LLR waste management facility.

Resumen
This paper reviews the limitations in current down-hole monitoring technologies for geothermal energy systems and introduces microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors as a means of optimizing well performance. The use of continuous, real-time, down-hole monitoring can improve geothermal well efficiencies and increase well life. More specifically, monitoring can aid in obtaining accurate temperature and pressure profiles to allow for optimized well reinjection and energy extraction. A variety of materials used in the fabrication of MEMS sensors have been tested in an experimental geothermal environment (critical-point water) and exposed for up to 100 hours. The results obtained from the exposure testing support the use of harsh environment materials to create a suite of sensors that can be permanently located down-hole. MEMS-based temperature and pressure sensors using a harsh environment materials platform are currently in the design phase for down-hole monitoring. In addition to designing harsh environment sensors that can reliably monitor down-hole conditions, suitable packaging must be considered. One vision is to mount the sensors to the well casings through the use of new bonding technologies.

Resumen
Abstract A new diesel engine mounting bracket, that was used as a part of a repowering package for one ton trucks, was analyzed by using a finite element model under an equivalent static loading to simulate maximum service loads. Upon finding stresses above the yield strength of the material, alterations in the design were made to stiffen the bracket in the areas of high stresses, the maximum of which was at the isolator mounting hole. This new design added several dimples and bends to increase the stiffness of the entire bracket, especially in the isolator mounting area. The results of these design changes indicated a successful reduction of the stress in that critical area. The fatigue life was evaluated for the chassis mount, and was found to be acceptable for this retrofit condition.

Resumen
Abstract The effects of fuel blend properties on spray and injector performance has been investigated for several operating conditions in a side-mount injector for Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) using two certification fuel blends, Euro 5 and Euro 6. Several X-ray diagnostic techniques were conducted to characterize the injector and spray morphology. Detailed internal geometry of the GDI injector was measured with a feature-resolution of 1.8 micrometers, through the use of hard X-ray tomography. The geometry characterization of this six-hole GDI, side mount injector, quantifies relevant hole and counterbore dimensions and reveals the intricate details within the flow passages, including surface roughness and micron-sized features. Internal valve motion was measured with a temporal resolution of 20 microseconds and a spatial resolution of 2.0 micrometers, for three injection pressures and several injector energizing strategies. The needle motion for both fuels exhibit similar lift profiles for common energizing commands. A combination of X-ray radiography and Ultra-Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (USAXS) was used to characterize the fuel mass distribution and the droplet sizing, respectively. Tomographic spray radiography revealed the near-nozzle distribution of fuel mass for each of the fuels, and the asymmetry produced by the angled nozzles. Under evaporative conditions, the two fuels show minor differences in peak fuel mass distribution during steady injection, though both exhibit fluctuations in injection during the early, transient phase. US-AXS measurements of the path-specific surface area of the spray indicated lower peak values for the more evaporative conditions in the near nozzle region. These spray measurements portray the specific behavior of real fuel blends under a variety of conditions, illustrating the need to examine multi-component fuels to better understand relevant cases. Furthermore, this work furnishes the realistic boundary values for simulations to appropriately predict the sprays which were experimentally measured, and influenced by those realistic conditions.
