Resumen
The cry for decolonization has echoed throughout the museum world. Although perhaps most audibly heard in the case of ethnographic museums, many different types of museums have felt the need to engage in decolonial practices. Amidst those who have argued that an institution as deeply colonial as the museum cannot truly be decolonized, museum staff and museologists have been approaching the issue from different angles to practice decoloniality in any way they can. This book collects a wide range of practices from museums whose audiences, often highly diverse, come together in sometimes contentious conversations about pasts and futures. Although there are no easy or uniform answers as to how best to deal with colonial pasts, this collection of practices functions as an accessible toolkit from which museum staff can choose in order to experiment with and implement methods according to their own needs and situations. The practices are divided thematically and include, among others, methods for decentering, improving transparency, and increasing inclusivity.

Resumen
This chapter outlines museums’ historical and contemporary approaches to science communication, detailing how they have used exhibits and public programming to balance their twinned missions of scientific research and public education. It describes the history of these institutions, and the various forms—natural history museum, science museum, and science center—they assumed in the twentieth century. It explains how and why approaches to exhibition changed, discussing the rise of hands-on, interactive, and immersive displays, and museums’ shifting attitudes toward the visitors in their halls. It also reviews longstanding and current challenges museums face as they strive to communicate with diverse audiences about scientific process, practice, and discoveries.

Resumen
This chapter examines the history of museums as it relates to American Indians in the United States, from the eighteenth century to the present. The chapter takes into account the often troubling use of the museum to depict indigenous societies as exotic relics of the past, while at the same time alienating artifacts of their material culture from them. In order to better understand the rise of museums and cultural centers created and run by Native peoples in recent decades, it is first necessary to understand both the histories and the practices of non-Indian run museums that demanded this necessary corrective from within indigenous communities. The chapter concludes with three examples of contemporary indigenous culture centers.

Resumen
This article reflects the role of universities, training institutes, foundations, and conservation laboratories in presenting an in situ underwater display case at an excavation, or a wreck, submerged structure, or dwelling. Therefore, the term “museum” includes both traditional museums as well as institutions that curate and display archaeological data. Museums represent one of the main outlets for maritime, underwater, and nautical archaeological materials. This article describes the early collection strategies of the archaeological data and explains how this concept came into being. Many prominent maritime archeologists were drawn in into universities, forming study collections. Some of these evolved into private museums. This article highlights threats to museums and maritime archaeology, such as lack of resources. There will be great excavations, recording, and raisings of relics, ships, and structures. The trend of bold new maritime archaeological museums is already visible in some countries, and will continue in the foreseeable future.

Resumen
This chapter discusses the archaeology of childhood from a museum perspective. It presents data from British museums showing that material is held in collections that can evidence the existence and sometimes also the activities of children in the more distant past. Even remains of children themselves, such as ‘Charlie’, the skeleton of a young child on display at the Alexander Keiller Museum, can prove important, particularly for younger visitors to such museums. Some examples of museum displays where children from the deeper past have been included and consideration of the curatorial perspective (how important and relevant do curators of archaeological material consider displaying such material to be? Do they think it is feasible to do so?) will be also be covered.

Resumen
This chapter looks at the rise of Buddhist museums in contemporary Asia. Curators at private and sometimes explicitly sectarian Buddhist museums have attempted to appeal to a wider audience and have abandoned particular sect’s rituals, liturgies, symbols, and teachings to promote a new vision of Buddhism without borders. This opening up of their collections, as well as the active acquisition of new material, demonstrates a particular type of Buddhist ecumenism – an ecumenism without an agenda. The multiple affective encounters these museums allow create ecumenical environments allow visitors to leisurely experience Buddhist distraction What follows are stories of curators, architects, and monks who favor display over dogma, curiosity over conversion, spectacle over sermon, and leisure over allegiance. Specially, Shi Fa Zhao’s Temple of the Buddha’s Tooth in Singapore, The Ryukoku University (Jodo Shinshu) Museum in Kyoto, and others are compared to Buddhist galleries at museums in Europe and North America.
