BUTS, Zhanna. "EPIGRAPH AS A MANIPULATIVE ELEMENT OF THE NARRATIVE TECHNIQUE OF MODERN FRENCH WOMEN’S PROSE." Folia Philologica, no. 3 (2022): 30–36. http://dx.doi.org/10.17721/folia.philologica/2022/3/4.

Resumen
The proposed article focuses on the study of the literary narrative of modern French prose. Namely, the article examined epigraphs in detail as structural elements of narratives of women’s prose, which acquire manipulative characteristics and influence the construction of the corresponding narratives. The research has reviewed the narrative spaces of modern French writers artists, namely T. de Rosney and A.-M. Lugan. For the first time, the manipulative functions of individual structural elements of the artistic space, which influence not only the organization of the narrative, but also the narrative technique of modern women’s prose, were revealed on the material of the works of French authors in the course of narratological research. This article has outlined the main paradigms of poetics. Special focus is laid on the analysis of the literary narrative spaces theory, the research on manipulative influence, in particular, speech manipulation. Narrative techniques of novels by French writers T. de Rosney and A.-M. Lugan are characterized and described. The formulated features of epigraphs as structural elements of the narrative space are focused on the manipulative influence that these compositional positions of the organization of the literary narrative receive. The research revealed that female writers gravitate towards certain narrative techniques. So, for example, the works of T. de Rosney belong to the heterodiegetic type of narration, while A.-M. Lugan tries to create in the form of homodiegetic type. Such differentiation can be explained by the personal worldview of these writers, since one of them (A.-M. Lugan) worked as a psychologist for a long time, which led to the choice of the narrative technique (from the first person, focused on the outside). In accordance with the type of narrative, epigraphs for each of the novels were also chosen. So, for the heterodiegetic narrative type, epigraphs represent famous people's quotes, which implicitly indicate the plot and structure of the corresponding narrative space. Whereas the homodiegetic type of narration tends to choose mostly scholars', particlularly Z. Freud's, quotes, which contributes to the manipulation of readers, since it is aimed at the readers’ emotions.

Resumen
In every fictional text, two major movements together form what is narrative criticism called the rhythm of the narrative. They work in two different directions. One of them speeds up the narration movement, while the second stops this movement. The movement of the narration is sped up by two techniques: deletion and summarization, while stopping is done through the technique of description. Except for these two techniques, another technique leads to balancing acceleration and stopping, which is called the scene technique. These techniques all work to organize the internal movement of the text while it is being narrated. In our study of the movement of the text, we took the novel (Shawgarakan - The Walkers in the Night) by the Kurdish novelist (Miran Abraham) as an applied model to know the role of these techniques in organizing the narrative rhythm in that novel. This is done by talking about the most important techniques known in narrative criticism with the technique of (deletion, summarization, scene, and description) to know how to organize the internal rhythm adopted by the aforementioned novelist. Our research comprises three axes. In the first, we dealt with narration acceleration techniques. In the second, we dealt with the technique of balancing the narrative moves through the scene, and we took dialogue to do so.

Abstract One of the characteristic features of Wolfram’s ›Parzival‹ is the narrative technique of temporarily holding back information. Based on Genette’s theory of narrative levels as well as Scheffel’s thoughts on self-reflexivity of literature and Weber’s definition of analytical narration, this paper tries to show that many of the narratives and speeches produced by characters in the novel mirror this narrative technique. Furthermore, it asks about explanations and intentions that are related to these narratives and speeches, about their (potential) effects on the protagonists and the audience, and about conclusions that can be drawn with regard to the poetological concept of the novel.

Resumen
For any literary work, the narrative technique constitutes one of the essential requisites. How the art of narration is chiseled in a literary work is what lends it artistic and emotional credibility. In Kanthapura, Raja Rao experiments with the narrative technique. The novel is presented from the viewpoint of an old grandmother who relates the tale of the brave resistance of the people of Kanthapura to expel the British from India. The ancient Indian Puranic method has been preferred to the western narrative technique, which according to Raja Rao, suits the Indian credo and climate. In Kanthapura, Raja Rao sought to defamiliarize the English language by bringing to the standard English form Indian thought and feeling, Indian culture, and Indian ideology. The present paper essays to investigate how Raja Rao used different elements and structures in narrating Kanthapura as experimenting tools to lend the novel a lasting artistic quality that served the purpose he had in mind. The reliability of the narrator in her description and narration of incidents and characters will be under scrutiny.

Resumen
Most critics tackle Fitzgerald's works thematically, whereas what distinguishes his fictional narratives is his magnificent style, suggestive language and innovative narrative methods and techniques. This is quite evident in The Great Gatsby and other pieces like The Last Tycoon, "The Mountain as Big as the Ritz", the autobiographical piece The Crack Up, etc. Tender is the Night is among these masterpieces which is our major concern in this paper. Yet still, this novel witnessed some controversial issues in its narrative technique and method. The study of the narrative method and technique in Tender is the Night has no less significance in the literary world than it has in The Great Gatsby. In fact, Fitzgerald mounted his artistic maturity and craftsmanship in this novel despite all the controversial issues that surrounded the novel's first publication. The present study sheds light on the cons and pros of the narrative technique and method in both versions of Tender is the Night with necessary reference to the development of the events in the novel.

The aim of this paper is to analyze some of the interlocking narratives present in chapters four and twelve of Leonardo Faccini's The Living Face of Money, checking the link between the use of the narrative technique and the presentation of the history of economic thought. The following scholars were used as the main theoretical guidelines: Todorov (2006), to introduce the concept of embedded narrative; Prado (2011), to discuss the repercussions of the narrative embedding technique in the contemporary world; and Oliveira and Gennari (2009), to explain the contexts of enunciation of the various economic discourses addressed by Faccini's work, among others. It looks at how the technique of embedded narratives from the literary tradition contributes to the presentation of economic ideas and concepts. Based on the analysis of these narrative fittings, the political-ideological project in Faccini's novel is evaluated.

This paper analyzes the narrative technique used in Choicheokjeon . By analyzing the compositional and narrative methods of Choicheokjeon in detail, the narrative techniques used in this work were extracted and cataloged. Through the study of this thesis, various narrative techniques were newly revealed in addition to the narrative techniques mentioned in previous studies. This thesis revealed that narrative techniques such as Parallelism, Chintak method, Eogyang method, Doseo method, Geup-sa-wan-seol method, Nan-gyo-sok-hyeon method, and Gyohap method were mobilized for the creation of Choi Cheok Jeon . Also, in the composition of the narrative, Choicheokjeon is structured so that it develops in a way of getting close once and moving away once. By creating the ups and downs of the narrative using this compositional method, the dramatic effect is amplified, constantly stimulating interest and attracting the reader.

This study analyzes the narrative structure of OMORI, a 2020 psychological horror RPG by Omocat, focusing on its portrayal of trauma through the protagonist Sunny. Incorporating Bal’s (2017) narratology and Wei’s (2011) narrative framework, this study examines techniques that contribute to unpredictability and trauma-driven narrative. Using Bermejo-Berros et al.’s (2022) narrative tension theory and Green and Brock’s (2000) transportation theory, the study reveals how each technique, respectively, incites immersive horror and emotional connection in players. Unpredictability can create immersive horror through narrative tension, whereas trauma-driven narrative may create an emotional connection by making the players sympathize with the character. Through its placement and presentation of sequences, the game evokes cognitive and emotional responses in players. The narrative structure in OMORI highlights the impact of unpredictability and trauma-driven narratives in game storytelling. Analyzing the game’s sequences and mechanics reveals their role in creating profound emotional experiences for players.

Resumen
This paper examines the narrative strategies utilized in David Milroy’s Windmill Baby (2015), with a specific focus on the non-linear narrative style employed by the female protagonist. The objective is to investigate the process of colonial disintegration from two perspectives. Firstly, it explores the use of storytelling as a method to unveil the veracity of the phenomenon of colonization. In addition, it conveys the significance and influence of Aboriginal women as disseminators of Aboriginal narrative, history, and culture. Rather than depending on the viewpoint of white settlers or colonizers, the Aboriginal woman adopts the role of a storyteller, while performing the roles of all characters and effectively communicating the story of her people. In contrast to the imperial norm, where history is mostly presented through the colonizer’s perspective, the play is presented through a feminist lens, where an Aboriginal woman recounts the narratives of the characters. The play also opens up spaces where a collaboration can be achieved between white and Aboriginal women, which is another counter-narrative to the colonial project, which inhibits such a relation. As such, by employing the narrative technique, Milroy effectively presents a counter-narrative that opposes the colonial narrative and conveys the traumatic consequences of colonization

The aesthetic effect achieved through the fusion of the child first-person narration and the specific language style in the story is one in the form of aesthetics of realism, particularly realism in the characterization of the grandfather as the main character and of Pete as the child narrator, which constitutes the attractiveness of the story. This paper discusses the narrative technique of ‘King Solomon’s Mines’, an adventure story novel written by Rider Haggard. This thesis aims to show that technique of the narration is the narrator’s effort to attract curiosity and to bring out imaginative fantasy. The technique is analyzed through the textual signifiers used in describing the characters and presenting the details. The method of analysis is based on Roland Barthes’s Textual Analysis that reveals what is known as narrative code. The research finding shows that the narrative codes which the novel has serve as ‘the appetizer’ to attract reader’s curiosity and as facilitator to bring out the imaginative fantasy

Resumen
In A Grain of Wheat, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o demonstrates his mastery of language for both narration and description. In the plot, while telling the story, he provides a vivid description of the social and natural settings in which the action is taking place. He adopts the use of omniscient narrator technique as an objective technique that makes it possible to probe the innermost depths of the characters and determine their psychological and emotional states, especially in the protest against the whiteman’s domination of the land. Occasionally, he attempts to illustrate the ongoing action with a corresponding visual symbolism or external imagery starting from the title of the novel – A Grain of Wheat and the character – Kihika respectively. This paper examines stylistic/textual analysis of narrative techniques of Ngugi’s style of narrative in A Grain of Wheat. The purpose of this study is to analyse the colonial influences on the Kenyan environment using the post-colonial theory and employing the qualitative method to gather data as regards the use of narrative techniques in the novel. The findings are that the source of environmental degradation and marginalisation of the natives in the novel warranted the use of narrative techniques, especially symbolism and visual imagery as indicated and perfected by the author in A Grain of Wheat. His use of flashback techniques is to give the reader insight into the life and activities in Kenya. Therefore, this paper recommends the use of narrative techniques by authors as part of the thematic expressions of their works.

Resumen
This research focused on teaching narrative text through mind mapping technique. The objectives of this research were to know and describe the process of teaching narrative writing using mind mapping. The data of this study were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching-learning process during the implementation of the actions and interviewing the students and the collaborator about the implemented actions. The qualitative data were in the forms of field notes and interview transcripts. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were gained by assessing the students’ writing skill through the pre-test and the post-test. Therefore, the quantitative data were in the form of students’ writing scores in the pre-test and the post-test. The results of this study showed that the use of the mind mapping was effective to improve the students’ writing skill. The use of colorful pictures of mind mapping in the BKOF and MOT stages was effective to make the students more enthusiastic in the writing activities. The writers found that the student’s problems in writing were that the students were confused to develop their ideas because they did not have many vocabularies. Furthermore, the students had problems in matters of capitalization, punctuation, grammatical error, and organization. They also needed too much time to finish their writing.

Resumen
India is a land of myth and legends. Indian epics are archives of our history and precedent culture which depicts what happened in the times of yore. They tell us about the events and developments that shaped our culture. Epics dole out as a testimony of our culture. Many Indian writers craft their plot from epics of Hindu mythology which is used as a literary device. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni uses Hindu mythology in her works broadly to instill audacity in her woman protagonists. She tries to demonstrate how myths steer women to surmount their conflicts in life. Her novels explicate how myths instruct humanity to lead a virtuous life. Draupadi, the heroine of The Mahabharata is presented through a fictional perspective in Divakaruni’s novel The Palace of Illusions, (2008). It is a retelling of The Mahabharata, from the perspective of Draupadi. She breaks the stereotype of a conventional heroine in Indian literature. Counter-narration is a method of telling the stories of those people whose experiences are not often misrepresented or untold. It is also a tool for uncovering, examining, and stimulating mainstream historical texts. The author uses counter-narrative techniques in the novel to counter the position of women in The Mahabharata era addressing the prejudice, difficulties, and the male dominance that they had experienced. A descriptive analysis enumerates upon the author’s use of the counter-narrative technique in the novel through a detailed description of plot, settings, and characterization. Divakaruni midst of suffering has overcome the predicaments she faced challenging the old age convention that women must accept tradition and society without questioning. Draupadi could endeavour the subversion where most women would have given up. Narrative technique is the art of narrating a story in a literary work by using various techniques. The narrative technique is vastly an aesthetic enterprise. The feature of the narrative includes characters with clear personalities or identities and integrated dialogues. Through Draupadi’s life author dispels outdated notions about what it means to be a woman. The author explores the ancient and personal experiences of Draupadi, as distinct from the original Mahabharata. Draupadi ends up being the most nuanced and divisive female character in Hindu literature. Draupadi is an archetypal representation of the pain and humiliation a woman experiences in a patriarchal society. The lives of women have not changed over time, whether it is the ancient or the modern era. There are still challenges to overcome the situations that call for specific actions. The novel The Palace of Illusions demonstrates the hardships a princess-born woman had to endure.

Resumen
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on a novel multi-modal enabling technique for contextualising brand consumption experiences. Design/methodology/approach – A multi-modal interpretive narrative approach is presented as a means of investigating brands as experiential entities for use in consumer identity projects. It reports the strategic use of different modes of data collection: autobiographical narratives generated by solo participants to create a benchmark of identity and subsequent friendship pair guided discussion interviews. This offers a faster, cheaper and more convenient means of gaining access to consumer experiences of brands than traditional ethnographic methods, which require prolonged engagements within a community. Findings – Consumer narratives of actual brand consumption and of mediated brand consumption are enhanced using this method. The consumer narratives generated provided rich insights into the role of brands in contributing to national identity. The contextualised use and function of identity narratives provided by brands were identified in addition to the identification of national community rituals of consumption. Originality/value – The multi-modal use of friendship pair interviews with solo autobiographical interviews is shown to offer benefits to qualitative consumer researchers focussing on brand/identity issues. The combination of data collection methods allowed for greater reflexive, memorial and contextualised discussion in the friendship pair interviews about brand narrative consumption and generated responses that advance beyond socio-political conventions concerning brands. Consequently, contextualised brand consumption experiences can be accessed more effectively than in conventional depth interviews.

Resumen
The present study discusses the postmodern narrative technique in Louise Erdrich‟s novel Love Medicine. Though the novel is one of the richest models of postmodern literary writings, the paper confines itself to four prominent perspectives of postmodernism which are related, covertly or overtly, to the socio-political crisis of the Indian Americans or as they want to call themselves the Native Americans. Identity, fragmentation, postcoloniality and multi-narration are taken in focus to show how the mixed-blood writer Louise Erdrich has mixed the oral traditions of her tribe with the contemporary most recent narrative techniques to produce a landmark in the Western literary canon.

Resumen
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce the new qualitative method of “Narratives of Change” to evaluate a project’s impact. This new methodology arises from a combination of the most significant change technique with a narrative analysis approach, and it is suitable for community development interventions. Design/methodology/approach Narrative approaches are seldom used in programme evaluation. However, depending on the nature and context of a project, it might be useful to offer a space for people to tell their story. Asking people to recognise change by recounting the passage from their previous to their present situation can help the researcher grasp particular concepts that may otherwise not be visible. At the same time, while the analysis of in-depth interviews can be difficult and time consuming, the method introduced here simplifies this process by offering a tool that allows the researcher to extrapolate semantic fragments from long interviews and facilitates the identification of prototypical characters in each narration. Findings After offering a theoretical discussion that introduces this technique, its practical illustration and the example presented in this paper show how this method represents a useful instrument for participants’ stories analysis in qualitative project evaluations aimed at identifying change. Originality/value This paper introduced a new qualitative method to carry out a programme evaluation using narrative analysis.

Resumen
Purpose This study examined child production of narrative features and of African American English (AAE) during a wordless storybook oral narrative task. Method Participants were 30 AAE-speaking African American kindergarten and 1st grade students from low- and mid-socioeconomic status homes. Story grammar (SG), story literary technique (SLT), and AAE features were examined. Results Young AAE-speaking students used a variety of SG narrative features to develop the plot in their oral stories. Students also used multiple SLT elaborative features, though some techniques were used more frequently than others. The total SLT score positively predicted the total SG score, and the individual SLTs of adverbs or adjectives, references to the main theme, and character interactions were positively correlated with the total SG score. AAE-feature production rates did not predict the total SG score. However, several individual AAE features served specific narrative functions, with the preterite had, zero past tense, zero preposition, fitna/sposeta/bouta, and double marking features often being used to relay complicating actions within the narratives. Conclusion Young children used both AAE and elaborative features in their narratives. Particular AAE features facilitated plot development, and the use of more elaborative features positively predicted higher narrative development scores.

Resumen
Narrative voice is a frequent site of experimentation in narrative journalism, and in podcasting this voice tends to be more prominent as the listener hears the narrator’s embodied voice. It can build a strong bond with the listener, which is important for independent producers as trust is not automatically afforded to them by association with a trusted media organization. This is particularly true for emerging producers, who also lack a professional reputation. This study examines the techniques used in five Australian independent podcasts to understand how they experiment with narrative voice as a podcast technique to build trust with the listener. It finds trust is built through narrative voice in four specific ways (1) first-person narration, (2) authenticity, (3) empathy and (4) emotional truth. This may allow for a greater variety of voices to be not only heard but trusted within podcasting, but also raises questions about misplaced trust.

Resumen
Intertextuality was introduced during the 70´s as a concept in Literary Studies and especially in studies on the narrative technique. Since then references to intertextuality became more and more frequent, although that evolution never led to a generally accepted definition of the concept under discussion. Important divergences continue to exist in that respect. However, there are two different standpoints (radical and moderate) that have been established. The present paper will focus only on the second, moderate standpoint represented by attempts at clarifying and systematizing inter-textual relationships at the single-text reference level. Such a line proves to be fruitful in practice, that is, in concrete text analyses.

Resumen
This paper examines the phenomenon of tense alternation in Japanese literary narrative, making specific reference to Kashimada Maki’s (鹿島田 真希) novella Meido meguri (冥途めぐり Touring the Land of the Dead, 2012) as a case study. It argues that tense alternation in sentence‑final predicative verbs should be regarded a stylistic technique that serves as an indicator of free indirect discourse and of focalization through a central character, and that it moreover establishes an opposition between external narration and internal focalization. It then illustrates how this dynamic is employed in Meido Meguri to create a contrast between a mode suggesting narrative distance and another suggesting mental interiority. This paper thus highlights a significant linguistic difference in the construction of free indirect discourse in Japanese and English narratives.

Resumen
Abstract Imbolo Mbue’s experiential novel Behold the Dreamers narrates the story of African protagonists who embark on a journey to fulfill their aspirations of a better life promised through the American Dream but, as outsiders, are hindered from achieving it. Employing free indirect discourse and the experiential dual voice narrative technique, Mbue explores the nuanced dichotomy of the American Dream narrative as a tapestry of utopian ideals and a flawed Western construct. The present study aims to analyze Mbue’s Behold the Dreamers through Monika Fludernik’s ‘dual voice hypothesis’ based on which the author blends the authorial/narratorial voice with the characters’ perspectives through free indirect discourse narration. Moving beyond the cultural and contextual analysis of Mbue’s novel, the present study investigates how the author’s narrative technique bridges the gap between real-life experience and semiotic representations of the novel, allowing readers to have access to the experiences of the author and the characters. The main finding of the present study is that Mbue’s narrative technique serves to unravel a contradictory notion of the American Dream by shedding light on the complexities of American immigration policies which prevent outsiders from achieving that dream. The research concludes that this narrative technique enriches the readers’ understanding of the immigrants’ lives and offers valuable insights into human experience and the pursuit of dreams in a changing world.

The study examined the types of language errors made by learners in the English narrative essays. It also assessed the feedback techniques employed by teachers of English in the handling of language errors in the English narrative essays. A descriptive research design was employed to examine errors of English narrative essays of 181 form two learners obtained through stratified random sampling and simple random sampling techniques. The eight teachers of English selected through purposive and simple random sampling completed interview schedules. Qualitative data generated from the essays of the learners was analyzed using Error Analysis and Content Analysis. The findings reveal that a total of seven categories of language errors which include: word order, verb tense and form, subject – verb agreement, spelling, plurality, word choice, and capital letter errors were made by the learners in their English narrative essays. The most preferred corrective technique was to involve the learners actively by encouraging them to read extensively and write severally on various narratives in the target language. The findings will provide reliable feedback to teachers of English because it will guide on the development of teaching methods and evaluative measures to narrative essays. The study will also be useful to curriculum developers in designing materials for teaching English language in secondary schools. It will also be of invaluable benefit to learners of English as it will guide on the way narrative essays need to be written.

Resumen
ABSTRACT The article focuses on the narrative construction of identity in the biographical novel about the life of Madame Tussaud written by the Danish author Dorrit Willumsen. A specific biographical narration technique of Willumsen is the starting point for discussing two interweaving layers of biographical discourse: the historical literary biography and the internal biography (lifeline as a story). Willumsen`s open dialogue of images and words shapes the narration to cross the frame of the principal character`s historical time and places Willumsen`s novel in the European context of narrative literature on artistic images of identity.
