In this century there has been a deep concern about the dangers of nationalism. Many of those who have expressed such concerns have been liberals. Yet, ironically, in the last decade, there has been a resurgence of interest in the idea of nationalism from within liberal thought – thus giving rise to the compound term ‘liberal nationalism’. Having situated liberal nationalism in a broader historical context, this paper critically reviews the arguments of liberal nationalism in the work of Neil MacCormick, David Miller and Yael Tamir. It concludes by drawing a distinction between the pragmatic and ethical significance of nationalism. This distinction neither entails a denial of the role of nationalism nor a defence of liberalism. It attempts to sever the connection between nationalism and ethics. Nationalism may be inevitable for the present, but it is not a virtue to be promoted.

Автор анализирует три взгляда на историческую эволюцию оперного сумасшествия: психиатра Нила Бренера, культуролога Кортни Миллер и литературоведа Эстер Хузер. Все названные ученые обсуждают исключительно тексты либретто, не касаясь их музыкального воплощения. Изложены основные критерии и принципы данных периодизаций, обозначены хронологические рамки периодов, описаны их характерные особенности. Отмечены как методологически перспективные, так и весьма спорные стороны рассматриваемых работ. Цитаты из исследований представлены в авторском переводе. The article deals with the problem of the periodization of madness scenes in European musical theater. The author analyzes three views on the historical evolution of opera madness: by psychiatrist Neil Brener, by cultural critic Courtney Miller and by literary scholar Esther Huzer. All these scholars discuss only the texts of the librettos without touching on their musical embodiment. The main criteria and principles of each periodization are exposed, the chronological framework of the periods is outlined, and their characteristic features are described. Both methodologically promising and highly controversial aspects of the works under consideration are emphasized. Quotations from the research are presented in the author's translation.

The paper discusses the ways of domesticating the feeling of sublime homelessness when contemplating the realm of outer space in Carl Sagan’s revolutionary television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (1980) and its present-day sequel Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014) hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson. Following World War II, a novel trend emerged in the science documentary film fueled by “popular science boom” or the “post-war bonanza” (Gregory and Miller, 37) and characterized by a gradual tendency to move toward more complicated representational extremes. Its form, best exemplified by the late 1970s and 1980s space science documentaries, relied on the scientist-hosted and stunningly realist format as well as a mediated experience of the astronomical and dynamic sublime. Partly contrary to this conception, the new ways of deriving spectator’s pleasure also involved both domesticating and trivializing the productions’ content, observable in references to domestic surroundings as well as familiar cultural and historical conventions, such as the frontier myth or urban sublime of New York City. The paper argues that examined documentaries, seen as multimedia spectacles, tend to domesticate outer space through reconciling the cosmic sublime with the notion of a homely, lived-in place.

Cette thèse examine l'idéologie de Neil M. Gunn, romancier écossais, et la méthodologie qu'il employa pour énoncer la perception de sentiments d'identité. C'est l'histoire et le traitement des données historiques qui nous fournissent la dynamique pour apprécier comment il échafauda ses hypothèses et décrivit la quête d'identité et son aboutissement, ce schème constituant son mythe personnel. La première partie de la thèse replace Gunn dans le contexte socio-politique et littéraire qui fut le sien : les années 1920-30 en Ecosse. Nous apprécions ainsi son engagement culturel et politique puis ses discordes avec MacDiarmid ; le poète vit d'abord en lui un des espoirs de la renaissance littéraire qu'il avait initiée avant de se raviser. La deuxième partie de cette thèse est consacrée à la méthodologie de Gunn. Nous observons comment, en utilisant la narration historique et la métaphore du territoire afin de présenter ses doctrines idéologiques et ses hypothèses philosophiques, il se situe dans la tradition littéraire écossaise, une tradition qui comprend le crépuscule celtique, un mouvement répudié par les auteurs de la Renaissance mais dont les caractéristiques imprègnent toutefois l'oeuvre de Gunn. Nous étudions ensuite sa trilogie historique (Sun circle, Butcher's broom et theSilver darlings) et constatons comment il utilisa et adapta le grand récit de l'histoire à des fins idéologiques. La troisième partie de la thèse est consacrée à l'imaginaire du romancier. Nous y voyons comment il met en place tout un réseau de métaphores afin de rapporter cette quête et son résultat. Nous étudions d'abord un roman initiatique (Highland river). Puis nous examinons plus en détail le corpus imaginaire de l'eau et des ruines qui jouent un rôle spécifique dans son schème de la quête d'identité. This thesis examines the ideology of the Scottish novelist Neil M. Gunn and the methodology he employed in order to state the perception of feelings of identity. History and his treatment of historical data provide us with the dynamics by which we appreciate how he constructed his hypotheses and how he depicted a quest for identity and its conclusion, a schema which constitutes his personal myth. The first part of the thesis sets him in the socio-political and literary context where he evolved: the 1920s and 1930s in scotland. We thus witness Gunn's cultural and political commitment and his subsequent quarrels with MacDiarmid; the poet initially regarded him as one of the hopes of the literary renaissance he had initiated before growing disillusioned with his ideological stance and his literary style. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the novelist's methodology. We first observe how, by making use of historical narration and of territory metaphors in order to put forward his doctrines and his hypotheses, he participated in the scottish literary tradition, a tradition which includes the celtic twilight, a movement repudiated by the authors who belonged to the renaissance, but whose characteristics nevertheless infuse Gunn's works. We then consider his historical trilogy (Sun circle, Butcher's broom, The silver darlings ) and how he employed and adapted the great narrative of history for ideological purposes. The third part of the thesis is devoted to gunn's imaginative world. We see how he establishes a whole network of obsessive metaphors in order to record the quest and its result. We first study a novel of initiation (highland river) before considering more closely the imagery of water and of ruins which both play a distinctive part in his schema of the quest. We then see how, having posited a complex archetypal representation system, Gunn reveals the individuation and the sentiments of delight which reward the protagonist who has fulfilled his journey

My thesis examines the early and middle periods of Neil M. Gunn’s writing career in the context of contemporaneous debates and discourses emergent in Scottish political and cultural nationalism. I locate my thesis within a new, broad development in Scottish Studies which is adopting more rigorously analytical, interdisciplinary and theorised models of interpretation. The first chapter examines Gunn’s own nationalism in the light of other contemporaneous Scottish nationalisms and assert that it is moderate in tone but radical, being based on a model of cultural repression / resistance. I examine current theoretical approaches to the study of nationalism and adopt the analytical methods of Anthony D. Smith’s ethno-symbolism. The second chapter examines Gunn’s used of racial figures of speech and concludes that he carefully constructs a politicised account of Scotland’s early history. This account is predicated on a theory of racial essentialism communicated through the visual clue of race. The third chapter examines Gunn’s racial tropes alongside those of D. H. Lawrence and fellow Scottish novelist James Leslie Mitchell (Lewis Grassic Gibbon). I demonstrate how they share an interest in aesthetic primitivism. All three writers adopt radical political positions based on the rejection of ‘whiteness’ and modernity. The last chapter examines Gunn from the perspective of current landscape theory, and analyses how his use of what Denis E, Cosgrove calls ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ positions is figured in his novels, and in his contribution to the Highland Hydro-Electric debates of the 1930s and 1940s. I conclude that Gunn is a profoundly political writer and urge a reassessment of his oeuvre in this light.

Il est devenu tres tot un militant nationaliste actif mais discret. En revanche, sa production litteraire est une oeuvre engagee dans laquelle l'auteur se fait l'avocat devoue d'un socialisme reflechi et pragmatique et d'un nationalisme qui sait garder ses distances par rapport aux dictatures de l'entre-deux-guerres. Il oppose la douceur d'un age d'or mythique qui aurait ete l'expression la plus pure de la civilisation et de la culture celtes, a la societe moderne ecossaise pervertie par l'instauration progressive d'un nouveau mode de vie apporte par l'anglicisation de la societe traditionnelle et par le liberalisme economique. L'avenir et la prosperite de l'ecosse ne seront assures que si le pays recouvre la maitrise de son destin. La lecture gunnienne de l'histoire passee des highlands est mise au service d'une ideologie qui tente de batir l'avenir du pays. Cette these, qui se situe a la confluence de la litterature, de l'histoire et de la civilisation, demontre comment neil gunn reecrit l'histoire en fonction d'une vision politique personnelle de la societe. Elle s'appuie essentiellement sur trois romans : butcher's broom, the silver darlings, et the grey coast, qui couvrent deux siecles de l'histoire moderne de l'ecosse, et souligne la coherence de la vision gunnienne de l'histoire moderne ecossaise. La these situe d'abord le romancier militant dans son contexte litteraire et politique, puis analyse la signification du recours au mythe de l'age d'or, avant d'etudier les soubresauts politiques, historiques, sociaux et culturels qui ont frappe l'ecosse. Neil gunn, the xxth century scottish novelist spent most of his life in the highlands, and was stongly influenced by the political, economic and cultural situation of modem scotland. Very early, he became an active but unassurning nationalist militant, although in his literary works, he appears to have been the dedicated champion of a pragmatic but well-thought-out socialism which succeeded in standing aloof from the dictatorships of the interwar period. He contrasts the sweetness of a mythical golden age, which night have been the most perfect expression of celtic culture and civilisation, with modern scottish society, perverted by economic liberalism and by the progressive development of a new way of life under english influence on the traditional society. The future and prosperity of scotland will not be certain unless the country recovers mastery of its destiny. The explanation that neil gunn gives of the past of the highlands is meant to be at the service of an ideology trying to build the future of the country. This thesis, which not only deals with literature, but also with history and civilisation, shows how neil gunn writes history according to his personal and political view on society. It is mainly based on three novels: butcher's broom, the silver darlings, and the grey coast, covering two centuries of modem scottish history, and underlining the coherence of gunn's vision. The thesis places the novelist in his literary and political context, then it analyses the significance of gunn's use of the golden age myth, before studying the political, historical, social and cultural troubles which scotland has suffered from. Gunn's view on the history of the highlands is presented covering three successive crucial periods, i. E. Les romans de l'écrivain écossais Neil Gunn, (1891-1973) offrent ample matière à l'analyse de la féminité et du masculin/féminin. Le jeu narratologique sujet/objet présente une majorité de romans androcentrés, les romans gynocentrés laissant entr'apercevoir un discours proto-féministe. La femme, trop absente dans les récits d'histoire, assure continuité et cohésion sociale. Vis-à-vis de l'homme, la femme est dans un état d'entre-deux : entre jeune fille et épouse légitime, dans une identité sociale intermédiaire : la mère célibataire est une figure récurrente dans l'œuvre. Les jeunes femmes doivent composer avec l'amour tendre et la coercition sexuelle. L'étude de la configuration mythique de l'œuvre fait apparaître un foisonnement d'images contradictoires de la Femme qui renvoient aux mythologies biblique et celtique et à un fonds mythologique universel. La figure pluridimensionnelle de la Grande Déesse et ses divers avatars (la Sirène/Femme-Oiseau) culminent en une voix féminine désincarnée digne des poètes romantiques, où il faut peut-être lire la véritable "essence féminine" dans l'univers gunnien
The novels by Scottish writer Neil Gunn (1891-1973) abound in subject matter related to gender and Woman. The play on subject/object in the novels shows a majority of male-centred novels. Nevertheless, those involving a female subject reveal "proto-feminist" ideology. Too often absent from historical accounts, women played a vital role as a guarantee of continuity and cohesion within the community. Gunn sees women in an "in-between" position in their relation to men, in some intermediary social and sexual identity : the unmarried mother is one of the recurring figures in the novels. Gunn's young women must face being the object of tender love and coercive sex. From a study of the myths woven into the texts emerge many contradictory images of Woman, harking back to biblical and Celtic mythologies among others, and universal "world mythology". The emergence of the pluridimensional, universal images of the Great Goddess and the Siren/Birdwoman culminates in a disembodied female voice worthy of the Romantic poets. Could this be the feminine essence in the fictional world of Neil Gunn ?

At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC. The project consulted the major works of British comic scriptwriters, Alan Moore, Jamie Delano, Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, Neil Gaiman, Warren Ellis, and Garth Ennis. These works include Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Shade: the Changing Man, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Animal Man, Sandman, Transmetropolitan, Preacher and several other important works. Following a chronological organization, the work tracks major changes taking place in the American comic book industry in the commercial, corporate, and creative sectors to show the processes through which the medium matured in this time period. This is accomplished by combining textual analysis of the comics with industry specific records and a focus on major cultural shifts in US society and culture

Brisbane architect-designed houses of the 1960s embodied a final manifestation of the Modern Movement in the twentieth century. The Modern architectural language of these houses was tempered by geographical and social factors,including the sub-tropical climate, Queensland's traditional architecture and the particular decade in which they were designed. Characteristics of the sixties era which influenced the architecture included the economic climate, materials and technology, and the lifestyle of the people for whom the houses were designed. Eleven architects who designed sixties houses were interviewed for this study. These interviews provided a first-hand account of each architect's design motivation and of the character of the period. Four houses were examined for the Case Study and this chapter includes drawings, photographs and a statement by the architect about each house. The legacy of the era is discussed, in relation to the surviving houses from the Case Study, and in general about the body of work that is left. The houses from the sixties make up a significant body of work that is important in the development of the distinctively Queensland house and in the history of architecture in this state.

A wise Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Freedom is never given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed (King 1)." For as long as men and women have shared the planet, sexism has been a universal issue in civilization. In a social justice context, American society has found ways to oppress people for centuries. The Oxford Dictionary defines sexism as a "prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex ("sexism")." Voting rights in America were established in 1790, but it took years of petitioning at various women's rights conventions before the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution stating "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex" was passed in 1920 ("Nineteenth Amendment"). Traditionally, men were supposed to be the strong, decisive, driven, courageous, money-making breed, while women were expected to be the nurturing, affectionate, weak subordinates. Today, we find men and women working in careers previously linked with sexism; men as nurses and teachers, women as CEOs and factory workers. Statistics show that today there are an increasing number of women providing the financial support in their families. As with sexism, people also have been oppressed by racism for centuries. According to The Oxford Dictionary, racism is defined as a "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior ("racism")." It has been argued that African Americans have been one of the most oppressed groups in America. Even after they were emancipated in 1865, it was nearly one hundred years later that their rights were protected with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Before the act's passing, African Americans were denied equal education, employment, housing property, and a political voice. My interest in this topic was peaked right around the same time I became interested in performing on the musical theatre stage. I got my start in local community theatres, and up until college, was the only African American cast in the productions. I started playing multiple ensemble roles per show, and throughout the years advanced myself to "supporting character" but never the lead. Admittedly, there were times when I wasn't as talented as the women who snagged the leading roles, but many a time when I was just as talented or more qualified for the role, it went to another woman - most times of Caucasian descent. What did they have that I didn’t have? When I got accepted into The University of Central Florida as a BFA Musical Theatre student, I auditioned for the plays and musicals every semester, and each season I began to see the same patterns of who was cast for each show. Roles I thought I would get often went to White actors. I felt victimized in this modern-day example of racism. But racism goes beyond black and White. Internal racism between the light-skinned and dark-skinned African American women I was competing with became a factor as well. There were many times when an audition notice called for an African American woman; however, an unsettling trend became very apparent to me; if the casting description was for a maid, or something of that nature, larger, dark-skinned women would get the majority of the callbacks, which would lead to them getting cast. On the flip side, if an audition notice called for an African American ingénue type, more of the slimmer, lighter-skinned women were called back and later cast. Has American society cast a racial stigma for African American beauty?

This chapter discusses considerations and tradeoffs in designing and developing an online teamwork skills training program for geographically distributed instructors andstudents. The training program is grounded in principles of scenario-based learning, in which operationally realistic scenarios are used to engage students in actively forming links between classroom and real-world applications of key concepts. The chapter focuses on supporting active engagement of learners, and meaningful and thoughtful learner-learner interactions appropriate to the subject matter (Neal & Miller, 2006). We describe lessons learnedin the development of a distributed training program that interleaves asynchronous and synchronous training modules (Neal & Miller, 2005) to leverage the advantages of both self-paced and group learning, provide opportunities to practice the teamwork concepts being trained, create social presence, and promote interactionand reflection among the course members.

The Casali and the Architectures of the Campagna Romana in the Late Middle Ages. Archeaological and archive sourcesThe territory of the Roman countryside in the Late Middle Ages was extended from the city of Rome to 40 miles in the Suburb, between the coasts of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Albani Mountains, the Lepini Mountains and the course of the Tiber. In the twelfth century various events started in this territory which will greatly influence its appearance until today: the castra arise, as forms of aggregation of a territory enclosed by defensive elements; burgi and villae, small fortified centers; and the casali, special production farmhouses characterized by the presence of a tower and other defensive, residential and productive structures. The militarization of the landscape began for reasons partly linked to the general instability of the period. Despite the basic differentiations in the forms of the population as in the functionalities themselves entrusted to the circumscribed territory, the forms of the basic architecture remained the same: the tower, the walls, albeit in variety in terms of technique, magnificence and complexity. This research can be tackled thanks to a direct analysis of the architecture of the towers which characterize the Roman countryside, occasionally accompanied by other elements, like the walls. The results of this study can be compared with the information reported in medieval sources, in which a specific language is used to describe the architecture and the characteristics of every form of human anthropization. The analysis of the differences and affinities between these territorially structures and the comparison with the contemporary urban architectures, allows to recreate a general picture of the architecture in the Roman countryside in the Low Middle Ages.

The accidents at the Three Mile Island Unit 2 (TMI-2) and Fukushima Daiichi Units 1, 2, and 3 demonstrate the critical importance of accurate, relevant, and timely information on the status of reactor systems during a severe accident. There is evidence that the failure of key instrumentation to provide reliable information to the control room licensed operators contributed to the severity of the accident at both TMI and Fuskushima Daiichi. These events also highlight the critical importance of understanding and focusing on the key elements of system status information in an environment where operators may be overwhelmed with superfluous and sometimes conflicting data and yet have to make urgent decisions. While progress in these areas has been made since TMI-2, the accident at Fukushima suggests there may still be some potential for further improvement in critical plant instrumentation. As a result, several approaches are being employed to provide better information to emergency response personnel during a severe accident. The first approach being taken by the PWROG and BWROG is the identification of methods to obtain information related to key plant parameters when there is a loss of dc power for instrumentation and control. The FLEX guidance in NEI 12-06 requires that reliable instrumentation be available to ensure core, containment and spent fuel pool cooling is maintained for the beyond design basis events for which FLEX was intended. For the most part, this instrumentation that is important for FLEX is the same instrumentation that is used for diagnosis of severe accident conditions and challenges to fission product barriers. Generic FLEX Support Guidelines have been developed to provide a uniform basis for plants to meet the NEI 12-06 requirements that includes methods to obtain key parameter values in the event of a loss of all dc instrument power. The PWROG and the BWROG have also taken a complimentary approach to provide Technical Support Guidance (TSG) for instrumentation during a severe accident. This approach identifies the primary instrumentation as well as alternate instrumentation and other tools to validate the indications from the primary instrumentation. The validation consists of: a) comparing the primary instrument indications to the alternate instrumentation, b) comparing instrument indications to related instrumentation, c) comparing instrument indications and trends to expected trends based on the accident progression and actions already implemented, and d) comparing instrument indications to information in calculational aids.

Reinforced concrete structures at nuclear power plants in the United States, in particular containment structures, are designed to be extremely robust and rugged. The ruggedness and robustness of containment structures can be attributed to their design basis, which includes pressure and thermal loads from severe reactor and primary coolant circuit accident events. In addition, the inherent structural integrity of these structures is demonstrated by the degree of protection provided against severe natural phenomena, such as earthquake loads, tornado missiles, floods, and fires. To some extent, the design basis also requires an evaluation of the potential for an aircraft impact accident, depending upon proximity of the plant to airports and the potential frequency of take-off and landing accident occurrence. In order to evaluate potential damage to nuclear power plant concrete structures and other hardened concrete structures from accidental or intentional aircraft impact, some analytical and experimental simulations have been carried out over the past two or three decades. The most recent effort was carried out for the U.S. nuclear power industry by EPRI, at the request of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI). The EPRI contractors were ABS Consulting of Irvine, California; Anatech Corporation of San Diego, California; and ERIN Engineering and Research, Inc. of Walnut Creek, California. The early phases of the effort were concerned only with nuclear power plant structures that house nuclear fuel, such as PWR and BWR containment structures, PWR and BWR spent fuel storage pools, dry spent fuel storage systems, and spent fuel transportation casks. A classified final report on these early phases was completed in February 2003 and the results have been reported to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). This presentation is based upon the portion of the results that have been released publicly by NEI. The reference aircraft chosen for the analyses is a Boeing 767-400 traveling at a velocity of 350 miles per hour. The maximum takeoff weight for this aircraft is approximately 450,000 pounds, which includes 23,980 gallons of fuel. It has a wingspan of 170 feet, an overall length of 201 feet, a fuselage diameter of 16.5 feet, and two engines weighing 9,500 pounds each. Three representative containment designs were analyzed: (1) reinforced concrete with a ferritic steel liner, (2) post-tensioned concrete with a ferritic steel liner, and (3) free-standing steel surrounded by a reinforced concrete shield building. All containment designs in the United States were represented by one of these three designs. Two spent fuel storage pools were analyzed, one representing typical PWR pools and the other representing typical BWR pools. Both have stainless steel liners. Three representative dry spent fuel storage systems were analyzed: (1) a vertical concrete storage cask encased in steel; (2) a vertical metal storage cask; and (3) a horizontal concrete storage module. Finally, a metal transport cask tied down on a rail car was analyzed. In all containment cases analyzed, no breach of the containment boundary was found, even though substantial damage to the concrete and deformation of the metallic shell or liner was observed. Similarly, the stainless steel pool liners ensure that, although localized crushing and cracking of the concrete walls is observed, no pool cooling water is lost. For the vertical concrete cask, the stainless steel canister housing the spent fuel assemblies is not breached although there was crushing and cracking of the concrete enclosure at the area of impact. For the vertical metal cask, the cask is dented, but not breached. Similarly, although the damage to the horizontal concrete storage module is substantial, there is no breach of the enclosed canister. The analysis of the transport cask showed that the cask body withstands the impact from the direct engine strike without breaching. The forces on the container are comparable to the forces associated with the impact design basis for these casks.
