Resumen
Background: The recent upsurge in the prevalence of cancer cases in Nigeria and other African countries is fast becoming a great challenge for the clinicians and urgently required holistic interventions. Most patients (60%–70%) usually present at an advanced incurable stage. Communication issues such as breaking bad news, discussions around treatment options, prognosis and advance care plans are often neglected. Cancer diagnosis is often synonymous to a death sentence and inadequate knowledge about disease trajectories and information sharing with patients and their families is often responsible for patients' frustration. A supportive palliative oncology teams play a critical role in facilitating and communicating between clinicians, patients and their families to bridge the gap and ensure effective therapeutic communication. Aim: In preparation for the forthcoming UICC African Cancer fellowship visit to the Life Abundant Palliative Care, Victoria Hospital in Wynberg, South Africa, a preliminary study will be made to identify relevant challenging issues and data among cancer patients at the Federal Medical Center Abeokuta Nigeria. Methods: A retrospective and prospective study will be performed of diagnosed cancer patients referred to the Pain and Palliative Medicine Department of the Federal Medical Centre Abeokuta, Nigeria between 2016 and 2017. Their diagnosis, treatment options, treatment compliance and defaults, offer of advance care plans, extent of interdisciplinary team and family involvement will be evaluated using the patients' case-notes. For surviving patients attending the pain and supportive palliative oncology clinic, their knowledge of the disease, treatment challenges, prognostication and family support will be identified and documented. Results: The observational gaps in the retrieved information and data about the treatment outcomes and interdisciplinary team support and challenges will form the basis or rather the prestudy platform for the planned fellowship visit on to the Life Abundant Palliative Care, Victoria Hospital in Wynberg, South Africa. The identified knowledge and skills gap would be used to design the final study in South Africa in August 2018. Conclusion: It is expected that the two studies will reflect communication issues and the approach to cancer patients' management in two different African clinical settings. The acquired lessons or experience during the second phase studies in the South Africa clinical setting would be translated to Nigeria practice and also shared at the 2018 UICC World Congress.

Resumen
Everything good will come presents the trope of the absent mother which scholars have identified as a significant feature of third generation Nigerian women prose fiction writings. Besides the trope of the absent mother, religion and identity also feature prominently in Atta's Everything good will come. This article harmonises these three dominant motifs in the narrative towards an examination of the complexity of identity formation in Everything good will come. The article focuses on Mike's sculptures as an artistic depiction of the dynamics that ultimately influence Enitan's identity formation. Due to the plurality of religious ideologies in the postcolonial Nigeria depicted in the narrative, the motifs of Christianity and traditional religion present in the narrative are explored towards illumination of key elements of the text. Christian motifs provide deeper comprehension of the dynamics that influence the relationship of Enitan and Sheri against the backdrop of the trope of the absent mother. Victoria and Enitan's characters and experiences find parallels in the being and characteristics of Ala, the Earth Goddess and Obatala.

Resumen
The level of motivation received by an employee as reflected in the satisfaction with the base pay package and other incentives goes a long way to influencing the employees’ attitude to work, loyalty, performance and job satisfaction. Employee’s motivation and organization performance has been investigated across different fields and economic sectors. This study takes it further by examining incentive package, employees and organization productivity in real estate firms in Nigeria. Panel survey approach was adopted and three questionnaires administered in each of the one hundred and seventeen (117) estate firms in Ikeja, Victoria Island and Lekki Area of Lagos State. Respondents were two employees and one other in employers’/management capacity. Descriptive tools such as frequency and percentage were used to identify and determine the proportion of firms that make use of incentive package/option while a 5-point Likert scale and ranking were used to determine and rank the options in order of importance among these firms. Panel data regression model was used to determine the strength of relationship between firms’ performance/productivity and incentives whilst holding other factors constant. Findings showed amongst others that there is strong positive correlation between incentive and employee productivity, employees are largely dissatisfied with the incentives offered by majority of estate firms and that incentive package is not the most important determinants of performance in real estate firms. The study therefore concludes that employers in real estate firms pay attention to other factors identified and review remuneration and incentive package to boost the morale of their employees for better performance.

Resumen
The effects of climate change in the face of land reclamation among other anthropogenic activities are of great concern to aquatic genetic resources and biodiversity. This study was designed to assess the preliminary impact of the proposed Eko Atlantic City (EAC) project on the aquatic lives and/or biodiversity, and the level of development and challenges that have implications on climate change in Victoria Island and its environs in Lagos State, Nigeria. The selected areas such as Lamgbasa, Badore, Ajah and Victoria Island were evaluated using the snowball sampling approach, whereby 111 respondents were assessed. Results showed that land reclamation and construction activities had impacted on the aquatic lives and the primitive fishing occupation (5.5%). Respondents (44.4%) agreed that the on-going EAC had contributed to the development of Lagos State, however, negative impacts of climate change such as ocean surge, sea level rise, flooding among others were high but with low level of adaptive capacity agreement (41.7%). Furthermore, analysis showed varying degrees in the extent of severity of problems encountered from climate change effects such as rainfall, flooding, temperature, health issues among others. The study revealed that these communities were susceptible or vulnerable to the impacts of climate change such as coastal erosion, flooding, storm/ocean surge, sea level rise etc and importantly loss of non- renewable aquatic genetic resources. The government is hereby advised to have sound policies for adaptation and mitigation strategies to protect these non-renewable genetic resources and effect of climate change activities.

Erosion is one of the major problems in Nigeria and Lagos State in particular. The objectives of this research are to identify land use/land cover changes in Eti-Osa LGA and estimate actual erosion risk using Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model. In addition, this research evaluates the perception of communities within the study area with the view of understanding the risk involved in erosion. The result showed that the sediment yield of the study was estimated to be between 0 to 48 ton/ha/yr. The estimated soil losses were higher at Eti-Osa West, parts of Iru/Victoria Island, and Ikoyi/Obalende areas recorded low losses. Land uses mostly affected by very high and severe erosion are the bare soils and the crop lands having about 3% to 4% respectively compared to the others. It was concluded that combination of rainfall, lack of cover for the surface soil, were the major causes of soil loss in the study area.

Resumen
Groundwater pollution risk modelling is an important asset to improve groundwater management and protection. In this study, we assess the temporal dynamics of groundwater pollution risk at the continental scale, using the DRASTIC model. The approach was developed using continental-scale data on soil properties, topography, land use, geology, hydrogeology, and climate with a resolution of 15 × 15 km2. We compared continental-scale groundwater pollution risk for the years 1990, 2000, and 2010. The results showed significant inter-annual variations of the spatial distribution of pollution risk. Changes were mainly concentrated in the area of the Nile Delta, around the Lake Victoria, in North Africa, and in coastal West Africa (predominately in Nigeria). We found that the increase in pollution risk was mainly related to the increase in the population density in these regions. The proposed methodology for modelling the temporal dynamics of groundwater pollution risk could support the monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focus in particular on the preservation of the freshwater resources against future threats.

Resumen
Reuse of sewage biosolids in Victoria, Australia, typically involves mesophilic anaerobic digestion followed by air-drying and long-term storage to ensure removal of ova of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) such as Ascaris lumbricoides. Long-term storage degrades the biosolids' agronomic quality due to the loss of key plant nutrients and takes up large areas of storage space. The impact of varying biosolids holding times and other processes on STH using Ascaris as the reference STH pathogen was examined in this study using a quantitative risk analysis approach. Risk modelling of the potential human health impacts from the presence of Ascaris ova in biosolids was undertaken for discrete holding periods of 1, 2 and 3 years. Modelling showed that to meet the WHO 1 μDALY·person−1·year−1 disease burdens guideline for limiting exposure category, a biosolids storage period of 1.24 years or 2.1 years would be required, depending on the data source of ova shedding rates per worm (Bangladesh or Nigeria, respectively). The soil exposure and salad/root vegetable consumption models included a number of variables with moderate to high degrees of uncertainty. Monte Carlo simulation was used to assess the effect of uncertainty in model input variables and to assist in highlighting areas for further research.

Resumen
Abstract. Despite Africa controlling the vast majority of the global phosphate it also faces the greatest food shortages – partially due to a lack of access to the fertilizer market. A more accessible source of phosphorus comes from wastewater flows, which is currently lost through the discharge to open surface waters. Analysing the potential phosphorus production of urban and livestock wastewater in meeting partial agricultural demand for phosphorus can improve food security, reduce consumption of unrenewable phosphorus, reduce pollution, and aid the transitioning to a circular economy. In this study, a global overview is provided where a selection of P-production and P-consumption sites have been determined using global spatial data. Distances, investment costs and associated carbon footprints are then considered in modelling a simple, alternative trade network of struvite phosphorus flows. The network reveals potential for increasing the phosphorus security through phosphorus recycling in particularly the South Africa, Lake Victoria and Nigeria regions. Given Africa's rapid urbanization, phosphorus recovery from wastewater will prove an important step in creating sustainable communities, protecting the environment while improving food security, and so contributing to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Resumen
Richard Arthur Reyment was born of parents of English, Swedish, and Spanish descent in Coburg, Victoria, Australia on 4 December 1926. After obtaining his bachelor degree from Melbourne University in 1948 he spent several years with the British Colonial Service in Nigeria. While there he obtained his masters degree from Melbourne and a doctorate from the University of Stockholm (Sweden). His work in Nigeria led to the appointment as professor at the University of Ibadan. He returned to Sweden in 1965 with an appointment from the Swedish Natural Science Research Council. In 1967 he was awarded his DSc from Melbourne University and was appointed to the Chair of Historical Geology and Paleontology at the University of Uppsala (Sweden), where he remained until his retirement in 1991. His early studies on random events, multivariate morphometrics, and statistical analysis in geology and biology naturally led him into the quantitative aspects of his chosen profession, and whetted his desire to share these experiences with others with similar interests. This, he decided, could best be accomplished through an organization to promote quantitative methods and approaches, which led to his concept of the International Association for Mathematical Geology (IAMG). His efforts and enthusiasm resulted in the founding of the Association at the ill-fated International Geological Congress (IGC) in Prague in 1968. Reyment was elected the first IAMG secretary general and later the second president. The IAMG is affiliated with both the IGC and the International Statistical Institute (ISI). In recognition of his scientific accomplishments he was awarded IAMG's highest award, the William Christian Krumbein Medal, in 1979 and a special Certificate of Merit in 2002. Reyment's pioneering efforts have influenced a generation of geologists and paleontologists.

Increased population, unhealthy agricultural practices, indiscriminate land clearing and illegal structures have led to an increase of erosion in Nigeria and Lagos State in particular. This research focused on identifying land use/land cover changes in Eti-Osa LGA of Lagos State and estimating the actual erosion risk using Remote Sensing and Geography Information System. In addition, this research evaluated the perception of communities within the study area with the view to understanding the risk involved in erosion. Maximum Likelihood Algorithm was the classification method applied on the Landsat imageries (1986-2016) to identify the changes on the land use/land cover types. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the perception of communities within the study area and Revised Universal Soil Loss equation (RUSLE) model was used to estimate the actual erosion risk. The result showed that the sediment yield of the study area was estimated to be between 0 to 48ton/ha/yr. McIntyre, Megan. "'Adding wisdom to their natures': British colonial educational practices and the possibility of women's personal emancipation in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Buchi Emecheta's Joys of motherhood and Tsitsi Dangrembga's Nervous conditions." Resumen
Popular opinion suggests that education is the 'silver bullet' to end poverty, famine, and all the worlds' ills. The reality of education for women, however, is not as easily classified as transformative. This paper seeks to illuminate, through historical research and literary analysis, the connections between the charity education of Victorian Britain, a system examined in Jane Eyre, and the missionary education which comprised the majority of the educational systems in the British colonies, including Nigeria and Zimbabwe, the settings of Emecheta and Dangarembga's works. Beginning with Charlotte Brontë's Victorian classic, Jane Eyre, and moving through time, space and situation to the colonial experience novels of Buchi Emecheta and Tsitsi Dangarembga, we find instead that education, particularly British philanthropic education, from charity schools for children without means in the 18th and 19th century to the mission schools that comprised the basis for British colonial education in Africa, produces women who benefit only in very limited ways. For Charlotte Brontë's title protagonist, as for many of the characters in Jane Eyre, Nervous Conditions, and The Joys of Motherhood, education represents a new life. Brontë, Dangarembga, and Emecheta all offer education as a possible escape for characters within their novels, but the length of and price for that escape differs based on a character's role within a colonial set of identities, whether the character in question is part of the colonizing power or one of its colonial victims. When taken together, Jane Eyre and these two African experience novels demonstrate that British education is largely ineffectual in granting female characters the kind of freedom that education is supposed to instill. The price of the hybridity necessary to survive in the colonial situation could very well be the complete loss of self, a disintegration of identity, as it is for Nyasha, who is, according to her own analysis of her situation, neither Shona nor British and therefore is no one at all.

Resumen
This thesis provides an analysis of the cartoons produced by Victor Ekpuk for The Daily Times newspaper of Nigeria from 1989 through 1998 and the artist’s use of ancient nsibidi script to “hide in plain sight” his social commentaries on sociopolitical and economic issues in Nigeria. Victor Ekpuk’s original cartoons within the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art are examined in the context of indigenous masking practices and other indirect methods employed by indigenous comedians to protect themselves. Moreover, the cartoons’ use of caricature and their nsibidi scripts within are argued to provide a connotative and denotative dichotomy which allowed the artist to work more freely during a period of oppression.

Resumen
In this chapter the aim is to analyze multimodal realisation of contemporary Nigerian politics from a critical view point by considering political party images which are constructed and exploited in Nigerian politics to guarantee sustenance of interests by party stalwarts' patronage and consequently, electoral victory. The methodology consists of, first, outlining the political images and slogans; then socio-culturally and linguistically interpreting the symbols, and finally drawing effects of imaging on the ‘ideology' and affiliation of political parties in Nigeria. The 1607 page September 2011 Source Book on Political Parties' Manifestoes and Constitutions is the data source. Significant is that not more than 7 parties of about 69 parties profiled in the Source book, as at end of 2011 elections, interprets for the followers its symbols; thus not only leaving to guesses what the symbols either meant or are intended to convey but also significant is that what the symbols communicate ideologically are often not obvious neither to the casual to the casual reader nor even to the political elites behind the parties.

Resumen
Victor Ezigbo explores the theme of mediated divine action through a comparison of Barth’s interpretation of scriptural authority and Christopher Ejizu’s view of the nature and functions of ọfọ in the indigenous religion of the Igbo people of southeast Nigeria. In both cases, a human-made object can function as a means for people to encounter God, even as God remains free, never identified or confused with the object. Ezigbo attends carefully to the details of how objects mediate divine-human encounter in each case. Without minimizing the differences between Barth’s theology and the Igbo understanding of ọfọ, he concludes with attention to their shared conviction that God’s freedom to use fallible texts and objects to encounter humans should chasten every effort to restrict God or make the divine in our own image.

In this video, the speaker, making a first-time appearance, spoke of the resilience of the members of his group in the face of the campaign by the coalition forces. He also attempted to disprove the media reports that the group had been defeated, saying this is a false victory proclamation contrary to the reality on the battleground. He further threatened those who fight against the group, and specifically mentioned the Nigerian President Buhari. It is noteworthy that the speaker identified Shekau as the leader of the group, and reaffirmed the group’s allegiance to the Islamic State. This video goes a long way to prove that although the coalition forces might have technically defeated Boko Haram or ISWAP, the group does not see itself as being defeated...
