Resumen
Professional values can direct nurse behavior. Nurse behavior should reflect caring in providing nursing services as the essence of nursing. The method used in this paper is a case study. Data collection is done by interviews, document observation, and distributing questionnaires to nurses in the amount of 517 nurses. The questionnaire used was the Nursing Professional Value Scale and Nurse that was modified and used to determine the nurse's professional score scale. Interviews were conducted with the field and nursing committee using a semi-structured interview guide. Interview material includes management functions related to the application of the nurse's professional values. Data analysis using fishbone analysis. The results showed that the professional score scale of nurses was quite strong, namely 101.19, but the application of professional nurses' values was still not optimal because some nursing leaders were still less professional. The recommendation from this case study is that nursing management needs to motivate nurses to apply nurses' professional values through attitudes and behaviors that have implications for the quality of nursing services and have an impact on patient satisfaction and safety.

Resumen
Job-related burnout has been reported by intensive care nurses worldwide; this study was performed to examine burnout in intensive care unit bedside nurses and nurse technicians in Brazil. A cross-sectional survey that included the Practice Environment Scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory was completed by 209 nurses and nurse technicians working in 4 Brazilian intensive care units in 3 teaching hospitals. Compared with nurse technicians, nurses reported higher levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and a lower level of personal accomplishment. A 1-unit increase in the quality of nurse practice environment was associated with a decrease in high levels of emotional exhaustion and low levels of personal accomplishment. Each additional patient added to a nurse’s workload was associated with an increase in high emotional exhaustion and low personal accomplishment. Approximately one-third of Brazilian nurses working in intensive care units report job-related burnout; the practice environment and staffing appear to be contributing factors.

Resumen
Introduction: Religious orientation is associated with psychological well-being resulting from treating negative life events as opportunities for personal and spiritual development. Purpose: To assess the impact of religious beliefs on the evaluation of nurses' work in the perception of patients, nursing students, and nurses. Materials and methods: the study included 150 patients, 150 nurses, and 150 nursing students, using our questionnaire. Results: 56.7% of patients, 46.7% of students, and 47.7% of nurses assessed the religious sphere of life as very important. Respondents identified good family life as the most important value in life (82.7% of patients, 76% of students, and 92% of nurses). Emotional needs were the greatest motivation for students (70.7%) and nurses (72.7%) to increase religious activities; for patients, it was an illness in the family (42.7%). Patients (62.4%), students (48.7%), and nurses (61.1%) were of the opinion that religion could affect performing work-related tasks. Blood transfusion was the most likely procedure to be affected by patients’ religious beliefs (50% of patients, 44.7% of students, 58% of nurses) or nurses’ religious beliefs (29.3% of patients and 18.7% of nurses). Conclusions: Patients more often reported that religion may have some effects on choice of profession, and most respondents did not consider religious beliefs an obstacle in making new acquaintances or performing work-related tasks. In the case of a conflict between a nurse’s therapeutic activities and a patient’s or nurse’s religious beliefs, the nurse should assign the patient to another nurse.

Resumen
BACKGROUND: Although the effectiveness of communication between nurses and ventilated patients has been identified by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses as an area of concern, there are few reports of research in this area. OBJECTIVES: To examine the interactions between nurses and patients on ventilators and the relationship between characteristics of these nurses and their communication with patients. METHODS: An analytical, cross-sectional, experimental design was used to examine the work experience of 30 nurses with ventilated patients, the perceived level of consciousness of their ventilated patients, and the actions and reactions of nurses in relation to these patients. RESULTS: Significant correlations were found between the nurse's perception of the patient's degree of responsiveness and the number of positive and negative interactions with the patient, and between the length of time the nurse cared for the patient and the number of positive nurse reactions. Interaction patterns are also apparent from the data collected. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that nurses' perceptions of patients' responsiveness and length of time nurses care for patients will influence nurse-patient interactions. Patterns of interaction suggest that nurses spend more time providing patients with information that the nurses consider important, rather than assessing or responding to patients' needs.

Resumen
Interpretive phenomenology was used in this study to explore what keeps nurses in nursing by examining the impact of the relational experience of the nurse caring for the nursed in the context of the nursing situation. Eight practicing nurses were interviewed about what keeps them in nursing. Data were analyzed using Heideggerian hermeneutics and the theoretical framework of Boykin and Schoenhofer’s nursing as caring theory. Four themes, practicing from inner core beliefs, understanding the other from within, making a difference, and nursing as an evolving process, supported one constitutive pattern, intentional compassion energy, revealing that nurses intend to care compassionately.

Resumen
summary Telephone advice nursing includes triage, advice, referral, information and coordination. The aim of the study was to explore what telephone nurses base their assessments on. We conducted 14 interviews with seven telephone nurses at a health-care call centre in Sweden. Two authentic calls per nurse were used in stimulated recall interviews, where the nurses commented on the basis for their assessments. A qualitative manifest content analysis was employed. Three major categories emerged in the analysis: care-seeker, e.g. ‘symptomatic sounds’; nurse, e.g. ‘nurse's own experience’; and organization, e.g. ‘health-care accessibility’. The findings show that the telephone advice nurses’ bases for assessments appear to be very broad. They include both verbally and non-verbally communicated information, and care-seeker-, nurse- and certain organization-related factors influence the assessments. We found that an individualistic view of the care-seeker seems to dominate the assessments in non-urgent calls to a health-care call centre.

Resumen
A study was undertaken in the hospice unit at a large, midwestern community hospital to investigate the sources of stress experienced by hospice nurses. The case material reported in this article is based on observations, interviews with nurses, written stressful incident reports completed by nurses, and support group discussions. A number of sources of stress experienced by hospice nurses are identified. Physical characteristics of the unit as well as staffing policies designed to improve the quality of care resulted in conflict and feelings of alienation from other hospital personnel. Procedures followed in admitting patients to the hospice created stress when they were not fully supported by hospital administrators and physicians. Other policies related to the preparation of meals and open visitation increased the nurse's work load. At the same time, greater involvement with the patient and family during the dying process resulted in increased emotional demands on the nurse. Nurses experienced a sense of loss when a patient they had grown attached to died or was discharged to another institution. Stress also resulted from the nurse's exclusive involvement with terminally ill patients. Continual involvement with dying patients precipitated anxiety and superstitions concerning the nurse's own vulnerability and was particularly stressful when the nurse had experienced the death of someone close to her outside of the hospital.

Resumen
Background. Pain management is a very important aspect of nursing care among postoperative patients. Deficit in the knowledge and bad attitude towards pain management among nurses remain a problem in Ghana. In order to manage pain better in the surgical wards, nurses should be well equipped with knowledge of pain assessment and management. Purpose. The purpose of the study was to determine nurse’s knowledge and attitude towards pain management among postoperative patients in surgical units in Ghana. Methodology. This study used the quantitative study approach with a descriptive cross-sectional study design. A sample of 211 nurses was recruited using the convenience sampling method. Data were collected using a questionnaire regarding postoperative pain management. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and the chi-squared test were used to analyze the data using SPSS version 16.0. Results. The mean age of the nurses was 29.77, with the youngest nurse being 23 years and oldest being 39 years. Majority (72.5%) of nurses had moderate knowledge, and 89.6% of the nurses had negative attitude towards pain management. There was no significant relationship between nurse’s knowledge and years of experience as a nurse (r = −0.03, p=0.64), as well as no significant relationship between knowledge and number of years working in the surgical ward (r = 0.06, p=0.36). Also, there was no significant relationship between nurses’ knowledge and nurses’ attitude (r = 0.06, p=0.36). Conclusion and recommendation. The level of knowledge and attitude towards postoperative management were generally inadequate among nurses. Therefore, there is the need to implement in-service training on pain management for nurses working in the surgical units frequently.

Resumen
This article explores nursing care for stoma patients, with a focus on colostomies, while providing some broader information covering a multitude of topics that relate to any type of stoma. Nurses must be aware of various factors when caring for stoma patients, as the latter will not always be in touch with their specialist stoma nurse. Therefore, if a community nurse visits more often, they can make a difference with their knowledge and care. Complications are not uncommon, and it is important the correct advice is given on diet, exercise, avoiding complications such as parastomal hernia through certain techniques, medications and aids and appliances. SecuriCare and the Royal College of Nursing have produced clinical nursing standards for the stoma nurse, and these are also relevant to community nurses. A pharmacist can give more specialist advice on medications, a GP can prescribe for infections, and a stoma nurse can provide specialist expertise to the nurse and patient alike, but the community nurse is at the frontline with a community patient. Therefore, they should be equipped with the knowledge and care expertise, so they can know when to act by referral to the appropriate professional, or give the appropriate care and advice. The patient will also have psychological needs to consider, which may require referral if these are beyond the specialist stoma nurse's or community nurse's abilities.

Resumen
The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of Nurse Experience (NE) and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) on nurses’ workflow and process time in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In this study, a combination of data from the time-motion study observations, ICU nurses’ Real-Time Location System (RTLS), and the Real-Time Measurement System (RTMS) data were used to develop multiple Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) charts. HTA chart helped us to identify the ICU nurses’ workflow patterns. The results showed that ICU nurses spent over 47% of their time on performing primary care (in-room activities) and 25% on out-of-room activities. Furthermore, NE levels and SOFA scores had significant impacts on the average process time of nurse handoff, in-room Electronic Medical Record (EMR) charting, and the workflow patterns of out-of-room activities and out-of-room EMR usage. The outcomes of this study will provide a detailed workflow of ICU nurses and might help nurse managers to conduct a better strategy for improving ICU nurse’s workflow.

Resumen
A nurse’s necessity at a health centre viewed from workload analysis is required to identify a nurse’s necessities adjusted with service standards and real condition at a health centre. This requirement is in accordance with the change of an outpatient health centre status to be an inpatient health centre in which infrastructure and human resource need to be improved. This was a qualitative study using case study approach started from data collection, FGD, NGT, work sampling, to indepth interview with stakeholders who had experiences in calculating an employee’s necessities based on ABK and nurse representative. Furthermore, data were analysed using a form to calculate an employee’s necessities obtained from BKN. The results of calculation of a nurse’s necessities showed that number of nurses required for an inpatient unit were nine persons consisted of five skilled nurses and four expert nurses. This number was equal to nine beds that were required (1:1). On the other hand, number of nurses required for an outpatient unit including BP, UKM, and Pustu were 26 persons (16 skilled nurses and 10 expert nurses) or 1 nurse served 1,458 people or 456 families. Rembang 2 Health Centre needs to fulfil a nurse’s necessities by considering innovation of nursing services to reduce burden of human resource. A nursing committee needs to be formed by District Health Office as an institution that is responsible to supervise functional positions. Standards of nursing diagnosis and an information system of nursing care services need to be determined in order to describe an autonomy level of individual, family, group, and community in District of Rembang in terms of self-care. In addition, academics need to conduct further research regarding workload of other functional positions in health in order to achieve goals of national health development.

Resumen
For more than 30 years, nursing students have had the opportunity to have clinical experiences related to their course requirements in the Dallas Public Schools. The Dallas Independent School District School Health Services Department staff provide an orientation to student nurses before their first day in the school clinic. To enhance their learning experience and clarify the regulations and expectations for student nurses, a handbook was prepared for the use of school nurses and the students. The Basic Health Care for the School-age Child: A Handbook for Student Nurses outlines the use of the school as a clinical experience setting. Another purpose for the handbook is to reduce the stress of this clinical rotation for the student nurse and for the staff nurse who serves as the student nurse’s preceptor. This article describes the development of the expectations for the clinical experience and the information included in the handbook. An outline of the material included in each section is presented to provide ideas for school nurses who provide or are considering providing a rotation for student nurses in their schools.

A one-day Watson’s caring theory educational seminar was presented to 10 staff nurses from a community hospital with the intent to improve patients’ perception of care. A quasi-experimental design was employed, using descriptive statistics and t tests to compare measures of perceptions of care pre and post the educational session. A statistically significant increase in nurse’s confidence in caring attitudes and behaviors was found as measured by the caring nurse patient interaction scale nurse version (CNPI-70N). Increases in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and System (HCAHPS) scores for nurses, on treating patients with courtesy and respect and for nurses listening carefully to patients, were also realized for the majority of units involved.

Resumen
Nurses belong to a profession that carries a high risk of burnout. This condition will have an impact on the performance and quality of nursing services. Efforts should be made to minimize burnout for nurses. Management of the nurses' work environment is one that should be done by the nurse manager. This study aimed to identify the effect of the implementation of a caring work environment by the head of the care unit on nurse burnout. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pre- and post-test with control group approach. Respondent of this study was 170 nurses who were divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group consisted of nurses within the Caring Work Environment Model as applied by the head of the units. The control group included nurses working in the environment commonly applied in accordance with hospital policies in the inpatient unit. Burnout measurements on nurses applied preand post- intervention. Data analysis was performed using the Mann Whitney<br />test. This research showed a decrease in emotional fatigue and depersonalization scores, and an increase in nurse personal accomplishment, (p&lt;0.001) after the implementation of the nurse's caring work environment model by the head of care unit in the intervention group. Within the control group, only personal accomplishment showed increased scores, (p=0.034). Reduction in burnout symptoms in nurses can be facilitated through the implementation of a caring work environment by the head of the care unit.

Resumen
Acritical social theory interpretation of the “ideal” nurse in the caring in nursing relationship suggests the ideal is difficult but nurses strive for this. The ten expert nurses from an international study acknowledged the nurse’s vulnerability, frustration, and need for validation and fulfillment in the “special” role of the nurse. This interpretation was based on a framework developed from Habermas’ (1995) Theory of Moral Consciousness and Communicative Action in which the components of the personal and professional self of the nurse are described then interpreted. Critical social theory examines power and justice, which is relevant in today’s healthcare delivery system.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe how nursing and nurses are portrayed in American and Turkish movies. Methods: First of all, we examined the films with the keywords nurse and nursing. The majority of the films were produced in the United States. Turkish film industry produced only six films between 1968 and 2020. Three movies from the United States (English Patient, Nurse Betty, Meet the Parents) and three movies from Turkey (Beautiful Coffee Server, Imperator, Brought by the Sea) with at least one nurse character with a significant part were covered. Thematic qualitative method was used to analyze the movies’ content. Results: All nurses, except one, were female, white, young, single, and childless. In “English Patient”, the nurse is portrayed mainly as a self-sacrificing character. In “Nurse Betty”, nursing is seen as a profession that can be done without education. “Meet the Parents” draws attention to common stereotypes about male nurses. In “Beautiful Coffee Server”, the nurse character is typically reduced to a supporting role, enforcing the message to the viewer that nurses were not really needed in healthcare. “Imperator” emphasizes the nurse’s sexual attractiveness and behavior rather than her professional work. And finally, in “Brought by the Sea”, portrayal of nurse creates a potent favorable image of nursing. Conclusion: Study findings show that movies, except “Brought by the Sea”, do not represent the reality. Nurses should be aware of the way they are portrayed in movies and team up with the media to effectively create a down to earth and accurate image of nursing.

Resumen
Nurse certification became available to nurses working in the practice area of multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2002. However, the impact of certification on the MS nurse's role and both satisfaction and dissatisfaction with the certified role have not yet been determined, which was the purpose of this study. With a qualitative study design and an international sample of 168 certified MS nurses, data from open-ended questions were analyzed regarding role change, job satisfaction, and job dissatisfaction. Findings indicated enhanced role change and job satisfaction regarding increased autonomy, colleagueship, leadership roles, and primary care nursing. Dissatisfaction for some was attributed to insufficient resources and benefits, along with administrator failure to recognize the value and importance of certified nurses.

Substance use disorder is a serious problem in nursing that is often invisible and not well understood or well handled. It tears at the social contract between nursing and society and disrupts the trust so essential to that contract. The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics contains clear language about a nurse’s duty to take action to protect patients and to ensure the impaired nurse gets assistance. Specific interpretive statements provide useful guidance in dealing with this problem.

Resumen
Abstract Over 50 percent of older residents in nursing homes (NHs) fall each year. Many falls occur among NH patients with cognitive impairment and behavioral symptoms. Although NH nurses caring for patients who fall intervene to prevent fall recurrence, we know little about nurse’s perceptions of the most effective interventions for management of falls related to behavioral symptoms. The purpose of this qualitative study is to describe and analyze nurse’s perceptions of fall prevention interventions believed to be due to behavioral symptoms. This secondary analysis of existing qualitative data was conducted from a multi-site parent study in three NHs in the northeastern U.S. designed to test nurse’s knowledge of falls prevention and interventions. Forty-seven registered or licensed practical nurses, English speaking who were full or part time employees were recruited to participate. Most were female (n=46; 98.7%) with a median age of 49.5 years and ten years experience. A grounded theory approach was used to explore qualitative data (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) about nurse’s primary and secondary interventions. Qualitative data were collected in the form of responses to open ended questions from 47 nurses. The correctness of nurse interventions were independently evaluated, then validated among two independent experts. Cohen’s κ was used to determine if there was agreement between the experts’ judgement on correctness of the nurses’ intervention. Results indicated a high level agreement between expert evaluations (κ =.727-.760, p&lt;.001). Emergent themes in the nurse interventions included: seeking outside help, confronting behavior, completing additional assessments, and patient reassurance.

Resumen
The frontline nurses’ experience of nursing with overstretched resources in acute care setting can affect their health and well-being. Little is known about the experience of registered nurses faced with the care of a patient outside their area of expertise. The aim of this paper is to explore the phenomenon of nursing the outlier patient, when patients are nursed in a ward that is not specifically developed to deal with the major clinical diagnosis involved (e.g., renal patient in gynecology ward). Using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, eleven individual face-to-face in-depth interviews were conducted with registered nurses in New South Wales, Australia. The study identified that each nurse had a specialty construct developed from nursing in a specialized environment. Each nurse had normalized the experience of specialty nursing and had developed a way of thinking and practicing theorized as a “care ladder”. By grouping and analyzing various “care ladders” together, the nursing capacities common to nurses formed the phenomenological orientation, namely “the composite care ladder”. Compared to nursing specialty-appropriate patients, nursing the outlier patient caused disruption of the care ladder, with some nurses becoming less capable as they were nursing the outlier patient. Nursing the outlier patient disrupted the nurses’ normalized constructs of nursing. This study suggests that nursing patients in specialty-appropriate wards will improve patient outcomes and reduce impacts on the nurses’ morale.

Resumen
Abstract Introduction. The profession of a nurse should be practised along with the standards of the most recent medical knowledge and law. Aim. The authors aimed at assessing the relationship between nurse’s education and their knowledge of the legal regulations, taking into account nurses’ performance at work. Material and methods. A total of 91 nurses were included in the study group. The mean age of the nurses was 34 years (min. 22, max. 63). Group 1: 32 nurses with medium-level education, group 2: 59 nurses with higher-level education. The study tool was a voluntary and anonymous survey questionnaire the authors’ own design, consisting 36 questions. The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using STATISTICA 10.0 (Medical University of Warsaw licence), nonparametric U Mann-Whitney Test α<0.05). Results. 69 nurses declared they knew the legal acts regulating their profession, Group 2 members were significantly more likely to know them (p<0.007). Nurses with higher education were statistically more likely to be aware of the independent character of the profession they practised (p<0.002). Most nurses were aware of their right to refuse a doctor’s order in case it is noncompliant with their conscience (p=NS). Conclusions. Even though the respondents had relatively good knowledge of legal regulations concerning their profession, it needs to be complemented, for instance through postgraduate education. In the study group, education affected the level of knowledge of nurses. Particular attention should therefore be given to the provision of complementary knowledge of the principles of practising the profession of a nurse to the group of nurses with medium-level education.

Resumen
Caring behavior is the center of nursing practice, a very dynamic technique, where nurses work with care for their patients. The better the nurse's caring behavior in providing nursing services to patients, the better the level of patient satisfaction with nursing services. Currently, there are nurses and other health workers who are not friendly enough in providing services. The objective of this study is to determine the factors that influence the caring behavior of nurses who work at the Regional Public Hospital of East Nusa Tenggara Province, which are age, gender, education, training, employment status, marital status, work stress, work motivation and respect for nurse caring behavior. This research is a type of quantitative research with a cross-sectional design. The population is all nurse administrators who work in 5 Regional Public Hospital of East Nusa Tenggara Province, amounting to 803 people. The number of samples of 161 nurses was taken by simple random sampling. Determination of the number of samples using the rule of thumb formula, namely 5 independent variables x 32 = 160 respondents. The instrument used was a questionnaire. Bivariate data analysis at a significant level of 5% (α = 0.05) using the Pearson Chi-Square test. Multivariate analysis using logistic regression test. The results showed that the factors that influence nurse caring behavior are employment status (p value 0.001) and motivation (p value 0.005). The results of the Odds Ratio (Exp. B) show that employment status is a determinant factor in the caring behavior of nurses in East Nusa Tenggara with an OR of 3,634, which means that nurses with civil servant status are 3.6 times more likely to behave in caring than nurses with contract employment status. It is suggested to examine other factors that can influence the caring behavior of nurses who work at the Regional Public Hospital of East Nusa Tenggara Province.
