AbstractThe precise simulation of the human brain requires coupling different models in order to cover the different physiological and functional aspects of this extremely complex organ. Each of this brain models is implemented following specific mathematical and programming approaches, potentially leading to diverging computational behaviour and requirements. Such situation is the typical use case that can benefit from the Modular Supercomputing Architecture (MSA), which organizes heterogeneous computing resources at system level. This architecture and its corresponding software environment enable to run each part of an application or a workflow on the best suited hardware.This paper presents the MSA concept covering current hardware and software implementations, and describes how the neuroscientific workflow resulting of coupling the codes NEST and Arbor is being prepared to exploit the MSA.

Suspension system of a vehicle is used to minimize the effect of different road disturbances for ride comfort and improvement of vehicle control. A passive suspension system responds only to the deflection of the strut. The main objective of this work is to design an efficient active suspension control for a full car model with 8-Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) using adaptive soft-computing technique. So, in this study, an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy based Sliding Mode Control (ANFSMC) strategy is used for full car active suspension control to improve the ride comfort and vehicle stability. The detailed mathematical model of ANFSMC has been developed and successfully applied to a full car model. The robustness of the presented ANFSMC has been proved on the basis of different performance indices. The analysis of MATLAB/SMULINK based simulation results reveals that the proposed ANFSMC has better ride comfort and vehicle handling as compared to Adaptive PID (APID), Adaptive Mamdani Fuzzy Logic (AMFL), passive, and semi-active suspension systems. The performance of the active suspension has been optimized in terms of displacement of seat, heave, pitch, and roll.

The traditional PID controller is simple in principle, easy to use, stable and reliable, and it is still widely used in the control field. However, for many nonlinear and lagging objects, the parameter tuning of PID controller is very important. Genetic algorithm provides a new way to optimize the parameters of PID. It uses simple coding techniques and propagation mechanisms to express complex phenomena, which is not restricted by the restriction of the search space. In this paper, the global optimization of genetic algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of PID, which can improve the performance and adaptive capability of PID controller. The mathematical model of the electric cylinder system is established, and the PID controller based on genetic algorithm is used to control the system. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

A highly concurrent task-planner for distributed multi-robot systems in dynamical industrial feed-lines is presented in this chapter. The system deals with two main issues: a) a path-planning model and b) a robotic-tasks scheduler. A set of kinematic control laws based on directional derivatives model the dynamical robots interaction. Distributed wheeled mobile robots perform the execution of autonomous tasks concurrently and synchronized just in time. A planner model for distributed tasks to autonomously reconfigure and synchronize online change priority missions by the robotic primitives—sense, plan, and act—are proposed. The robotic tasks concern carry-and-fetch to different goals, and dispatching materials. Numerical simulation of mathematical formulation and real experiments illustrate the parallel computing capability and the distributed robot's behavior. Results depict robots dealing with highly concurrent tasks and dynamical events through a parallel scheme.

This chapter focuses on sustainable land use and watershed management in response to climate change impacts. The first part covers some definitions and background on sustainable land use, watershed management approach, and sustainable watershed management. The second part describes the use of the Geographic Information System (GIS) and Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) model focusing on the framework for a planning and decision making, computer-based system for supporting spatial decisions. The mathematical programming has been reviewed focusing on optimization algorithms that include optimization modeling and simulation modeling for decision making. This paper presents a robotic grinding system for work pieces with free-form geometries. A mathematical model representing the kinematics and dynamics of the system is built in the first part of the paper. Offline programming, calibration and a novel method for robotic error compensation are utilized to accurately generate the robotic grinding path. A computer simulation model of the valve train of a Honda GX30 engine was modeled using Virtual Test Bed (VTB), a resistive companion dynamic simulation solver. In this study, the potential merits of integrating a supercapacitor into an electric vehicle (EV), namely a Toyota RAV4 EV, is investigated. In particular, the impacts of energy management system (EMS) with a buffer scheme and a dynamic programming (DP)-based control law on the vehicle performance characteristics are examined and compared to the vehicle with no supercapacitor in use.
