The thesis work evaluates a method to estimate the volume of stone and gravelpiles using only a cellphone to collect video and sensor data from the gyroscopesand accelerometers. The project is commissioned by Escenda Engineering withthe motivation to replace more complex and resource demanding systems with acheaper and easy to use handheld device. The implementation features popularcomputer vision methods such as KLT-tracking, Structure-from-Motion, SpaceCarving together with some Sensor Fusion. The results imply that it is possible toestimate volumes up to a certain accuracy which is limited by the sensor qualityand with a bias.

The demand for Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) applications is increasing day by day and their development requires efficient prototyping and real time testing. ADTF (Automotive Data and Time Triggered Framework) is a software tool from Elektrobit which is used for Development, Validation and Visualization of Vision based applications, mainly for ADAS and Autonomous driving. With the help of ADTF tool, Image or Video data can be recorded and visualized and also the testing of data can be processed both on-line and off-line. The development of ADAS applications needs image and video processing and the algorithm has to be highly efficient and must satisfy Real-time requirements. The main objective of this research would be to integrate OpenCV library with ADTF cross platform. OpenCV libraries provide efficient image processing algorithms which can be used with ADTF for quick benchmarking and testing. An ADTF filter framework has been developed where the OpenCV algorithms can be directly used and the testing of the framework is carried out with .DAT and image files with a modular approach. CMake is also explained in this thesis to build the system with ease of use. The ADTF filters are developed in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 in C++ and OpenMP API are used for Parallel programming approach.

Vector graphics provide smooth, resolution-independent images and are used for user interfaces, illustrations,fonts and more in a wide range of applications.During the last years, handheld devices have become increasingly powerful and feature-rich. It is expectedthat an increasing number of devices will contain dedicated GPUs (graphics processing units)capable of high quality 3d graphics for games. It is of interest to use the same hardware for acceleratingvector graphics.OpenVG is a new API for vector graphics rendering on a wide range of devices from desktop to handheld.Implementations can use different algorithms and ways of accelerating the rendering process in hardware,transparent from the user application.State of the art vector graphics solutions perform much processing in the CPU, transfer large amounts ofvertex and polygon data from the CPU to GPU, and generally use the GPU in a suboptimal way. Moreefficient approaches are desirable.Recently developed algorithms provide efficient curve rendering with little CPU overhead and a significantreduction in vertex and polygon count. Some issues remain before the approach can be used forrendering in an OpenVG implementation.This thesis builds on these algorithms to develop an approach that can be used for a conformant OpenVGimplementation. A number of issues, mainly related to precision, robustness and missing features, areidentified. Solutions are suggested and either implemented in a prototype or left as future work.Preliminary tests compare the new approach to traditional approximation with line segments.Vertex and triangle count as well as the simulated tile list counts are lowered significantly and CPUoverhead from subdivision is avoided or greatly reduced in many common cases. CPU overhead fromtessellation is eliminated through the use of an improved stencil buffer technique.Data-sets with different properties show varying amounts of improvement from the new approach. Forsome data-sets, vertex and triangle count is lowered by up to 70% and subdivision is completely avoided,while for others there is no improvement.

OpenVG is a new open standard for 2 dimensions vector graphics for handheld devices. This project, which is a master thesis and an internship, aims to study the standard itself deeply before to study the role it can play in the future of artistic content creation.We will see that under some few conditions, OpenVG has everything to fulfil its role in the market and to attract digital artists who would like to enlarge their creation field. But the major aim of the project is to develop a benchmark for both hardware and software implementations. And to achieve this goal, a study of the theory of performance evaluation is necessary. And after developing the benchmark, it is interesting to run some few tests to illustrate some principles enounced while studying performance evaluation.

Resumen
Although I've read and written poetry for my own pleasure for about twenty years now, I've only seriously studied and written poetry on a consistent basis for the past two years. In this sense, I still consider myself a beginning poet. When attempting to pursue an art form as refined and historically informed as poetry, only after spending a number of years reading and writing intensively would I no longer consider myself a beginner, but a practitioner of the art. I've grounded my early development as a poet in concision, voice, and imagination, and hope to build upon these ideas with other poetic techniques, theories, and forms as I go forward. I am particularly interested in mastering the sonnet form, a concise and imaginative form that will allow me to further develop my skills. Hopefully, the works in this thesis reflect that effort.

Dörrstängare används för att se till att dörrar stängs korrekt. På marknaden idag finns både mekaniska och elektriska dörrstängare som uppfyller krav från Brandskyddsföreningen, då de säkerställer att dörrar stängs korrekt och därmed förhindrar brandspridning. Ytterligare krav och riktlinjer angående tillgänglighet kommer från Boverket. Dessa uppfylls idag endast av de modeller av dörrstängare som är delvis elektriska. Därför finns en stor efterfrågan på en konstruktion av en mekanisk dörrstängare som uppfyller båda dessa krav. En princip för en mekanisk dörrstängare har konstruerats där öppningsmotståndet har förminskats. Målet har varit att dörrstängaren ska uppfylla krav för att motverka brandspridning och rökutveckling samt för tillgänglighet. Med kund- och marknadsundersökningar samt idégenerering har en lösning utformats. Områden så som hydraulik, pneumatik samt magnetism har undersökts och koncept utifrån dessa har utformats. Fler lösningar och principer har genom brainstorming, modeller och matriser genererats inom magnetism, som bedöms vara det område med mest potential. En slutlig princip har utifrån detta utvecklats. Principen underlättar för användaren under öppning av dörren då en öppningskraft appliceras i mekanismen som minskar öppningsmotståndet. Öppningskraften skapas med hjälp av kugghjul och magneter som repellerar under öppningssekvensen. Den utvändiga designen av dörrstängaren har utformats för att vara mer anpassningsbar än dagens produkter. Det yttrehöljet har konstruerats så att detta kan varieras till färg och material för att på bästa sätt uppfylla kundens krav.
Door closers are produced to ensure that a door is closing properly. Today’s market is offering both mechanical and electrical door closers that meet the requirements of the Fire Protection Association (Brandskyddsföreningen), as they ensure that doors are closed properly and thus prevents fire spread. Further requirements and guidelines regarding accessibility can be found at the National Housing Board (Boverket). These criteria are only met by the electrical products, leaving a gap in the market for a mechanical solution that meet all the requirements of today. A theoretical solution takes form in a mechanical door closer constructed to reduce the opening resistance. The ambition is to find a solution that prevents fire spread and allows accessibility. Through customer surveys, market researches and brainstorming, a solution has been produced. Technology based areas such as hydraulics, pneumatics and magnetism has been investigated to form final concepts. Magnetism is considered to be the most promising area with a lot of potential regarding the product development process. The final solution minimizes the opening resistance with a opening force to help the user when opening the door. The opening force is created by gears and repelling magnets during the opening sequence. The exterior design of the door closer has been formed to be more adaptable than current products. The external cover is designed to be exchangeable in order to customize the product regarding material, and colour to meet the customer requirements.

It is my discovery of the mandala that has had the most significant influence on me as an artist. The mandala, Sanskrit word for circle or center, is found in a majority of my pieces, either literally or symbolically. My interest in and subsequent use of the mandala began twenty years ago and continues to this day. The mandala is a primordial image found in the macrocosm of the universe, the microcosm of nature, and in the psyche of man. The circle has been used throughout the world in image and architecture as a sacred symbol since the beginning of time.

Die Dissertation untersucht 1) welche Cues Kinder und Erwachsene in ihrer Cuebox haben, d.h. welche Cues für Inferenzen herangezogen wird, 2) wie Intuition über die Wichtigkeit von Cues die Informationssuche beeinflusst, und 3) wie das Framing eines Problems und das experimentelle Design die Intuition beeinflussen. Das erste Projekt untersucht den Effekt verschiedener Domänen und Objektrepräsentationen auf Erfragungsstrategien von Kindern und Erwachsenen in einer Kategorisierungsaufgabe. Ergebnisse zeigen, dass eine Basis-Level-Repräsentation (z.B. Hund) das Generieren von höher geordneten Merkmalen, welche die Objekte innerhalb einer übergeordneten Kategorie unterscheiden, für Kinder erleichtern und dadurch benutzt werden können, um effektive Fragen zu stellen. Dieser Effekt wurde nicht gefunden, wenn Kinder nicht selbst solche Merkmale generierten, sondern aus einem vordefinierten Set auswählen mussten. Das zweite Projekt untersuchte Kinder und junge Erwachsene bezüglich zweier Inferenzprobleme. In einer Bedingung mussten Cues selbst generiert werden, in einer anderen wurde ein Set von Cues vorgegeben. Ergebnisse zeigen, dass nur, wenn Cue selbst generiert wurden, junge Kinder gleich gut oder besser als ältere Kinder oder Erwachsene abschnitten, da sie Cues generierten, die ebenso informativ waren wie die der anderen beiden Altersgruppen. In dem dritten Projekt wurde getestet, wie die Art, Anzahl und Qualität der Cues die Fähigkeit von Kindern und jungen Erwachsenen beeinflusst, die informativsten Cues zu generieren bzw. auszuwählen. Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Cuebox von Kindern mehr perzeptuelle Cues beinhaltet als jene junger Erwachsener. Dennoch war der Informationsgehalt der generierten Cues in beiden Gruppen gleich. Junge Erwachsene zeigten die Tendenz, nicht-perzeptuelle Cues systematisch als informativer zu erachten als perzeptuelle Cues. Kinder zeigten die gleiche Tendenz nur dann, wenn sie aus einem vordefinierten Set auswählen mussten.
My dissertation addresses the questions 1) what cues children and adults have in their cuebox (i.e., the set of cues available for making inferences or categorizing), 2) how people’s intuition about the importance of the cues drives their information search, and 3) how the framing of a problem and the experimental design influence these intuitions. A first project investigated developmental differences in how children and adults solve a sequential binary categorization task. Results show that, apart from age-related differences, children’s but not adults’ inquiry strategies improve if objects are represented at the basic level (e.g., dog) but not if represented at the subordinate level (e.g., Dalmatian) or when the basic level is specified by additional features (e.g., dog, kennel, to wag, collar). Explanations are that, unlike other representations, basic level objects trigger features that are useful for categorization, and therefore help children ask more effective questions. A second project tested children and young adults on two inference problems, by manipulating whether cues were generated or given. Results show that, only when generating their own cues, younger children matched or even outperformed the accuracy of older children and young adults, by generating cues that were as informative as the those generated by older children and young adults. A third project examined the type, amount and informativeness of the cues in people’s cuebox. Further, it investigated the influence of the type of cues on the ability of children and young adults to generate or select the most informative cue available. Results show that children’s cuebox contains more perceptual cues than young adults’. We found no difference between the two age groups in terms of informativeness of the cues generated. Young adults showed the tendency to systematically consider non-perceptual cues more informative than perceptual cues. Children showed such tendency only in a cue-selection task.

This Thesis describes the synthesis and characterisation of new magnesium borohydride, alkoxide and amide complexes, and their uses as catalysts for the ringopening polymerisation (ROP) of rac-, L-, D-, meso-lactide and ?-caprolactone. Chapter One introduces cyclic esters and possible mechanistic pathways leading to polyesters by ROP. Common techniques for polymer characterisation are described and an overview of ROP from an industrial perspective is also given. Chapter Two describes the synthesis and characterisation of a series of magnesium alkyl, halide, borohydride and alkoxide complexes supported by the 3-tert-butyl, 5- methyl tris(pyrazolyl)methane ligand. Computational analysis will be discussed to gain further understanding from the viewpoint of bonding and structures. Chapter Three describes the activities of magnesium borohydride and benzyloxide catalysts in the ROP of cyclic esters. Detailed mechanistic studies for the ROP of LA using a magnesium borohydride catalyst are discussed. Chapter Four describes the use of borate ester species as chain transfer agents in the immortal ROP of rac-LA and ?-CL. The effect of non-activated catalysts and borate ester species on the occurrence of transesterification side reactions is also discussed. Chapter Five describes the synthesis and characterisation of a series of magnesium amide, borohydride and halide complexes supported by the chiral bis(oxazolinylphenyl)amine ligand. The catalytic activities of the magnesium borohydride complex in the living and immortal ROP of LA are also discussed. Chapter Six contains experimental details and characterising data for the new complexes reported in this Thesis. CD Appendix contains .CIF files for all the new crystallographically-characterised complexes and .xyz files containing the coordinates of the geometrically optimised structures.

This study examined global studies programs which emerged as a seemingly new field of knowledge in Canadian universities, beginning in 1998. These programs arose within the context of a number of transformational processes in higher education, namely internationalization, the introduction of global citizenship, an accent on civic engagement, and interdisciplinarity. By analysing institutional motivations and the personal convictions of the initiators of the new programs, the study identified a problematic lack of cohesion within the growing field of global studies in Canada. The principal method of analysis adopted in this study was the first-hand examination of a number of specific cases at different universities or institutions of higher learning, in the form of extensive interviews with leading individuals in the relevant programs. Additionally, university policy documents, reports of Canadian organizations (e.g. AUCC), and program websites were consulted in order to examine trends in global studies programs in Canada. An in-depth review of existing literature on the conceptualization of global studies as well as an analysis of diverse data collected made it possible to identify a number of problems, foremost of which was a disconnect between the theoretical aspirations for the emerging field and the understanding of global studies due to a lack of consensus in Canada on a definition of global studies. It was revealed that a common understanding of global studies in Canada is lacking. Furthermore, the analysis brought to light the diverse ideas behind the conceptualization of global studies programs, and the ways in which the personal ideas of the programs’ founders interacted with a variety of motives for designing these kinds of programs at different universities. An examination of the composition of the programs revealed their indeterminate character, as well as a remarkable overlap with the field of international development. Finally, the study offers recommendations for the leaders in global studies in Canada and provides suggestions for future research.

1 INTRODUCTION With the increasing capabilities of today’s smart phones, the demand of consumers for new applications has risen dramatically. By opening up these smart phones and providing third parties the opportunity to develop “apps” for their systems, producers like Apple and platform owners like Google can offer much more value to their customers. As smart phones are one kind of embedded systems (ES), the question arises if similar development can also take place in other kinds of embedded systems. ES, consisting of hardware and software, are embedded in a device to realize a specific function, in contrast to personal computers, which serve multiple purposes [4,30]. The notion of incorporating external actors in the innovation process has been coined open innovation which has become increasingly popular in research and practice since Chesbrough introduced the term in 2003 [12]. By opening up their innovation processes for external actors, firms could benefit from internal as well as from external ideas. In this paper, the notion of open innovation will be explored in the context of ES. The case of ES is particularly interesting, as it requires not only the opening of innovation processes, but also the opening of the embedded system itself. Some of these platforms are opened only to a small degree like Apple’s iPhone, in order to enable others to create new applications for it. Similar developments also take place for example in the automotive software domain, especially concerning infotainment systems. However, most kinds of ES have been spared out by this development until now. As more than 98% of all chips manufactured are used for ES [10] and high-performing computer chips are getting cheaper [38], opening considerations could also prove valuable for a large number of other application domains. However, opening up innovation processes in the context of ES is challenging from both an organizational and technical perspective. First of all, embedded systems are subject to a variety of constraints in contrast to multi-purpose computing devices, like realtime and security constraints or costs and resource constraints. Second, ES are quite diverse both in their composition and in terms on their requirements. In this paper, we want to explore, how the different properties of embedded systems influence possible open innovation processes. This will be done by drawing on to the characteristics of firms implementing the three core open innovation processes suggested by Gassmann and Enkel (2004) [15] and conceptually explaining how the characteristics of ES enable or hinder open innovation processes. As a result, a classification of the OI processes in terms of ES characteristics is provided.

Resumen

The purpose of this thesis was to open up the black boxed TMT process by examining the interaction between TMT members using cognitive and demographic diversity variables, and to see how organisational performance could be affected by the process. By opening the process, a model of the process was developed, which can be tested in further research. The major findings are that there are some aspects that stand out; the CEO and the functional responsibilities that influence the process. Further, the integration within the TMT is not that high, so the upper echelon theory should not be used without considerations on studies where composition is related to organisational performance. These have shown to influence performance in different ways. The functional responsibility has shown to create subgroups that practice problem solving and decision making more frequent than the TMT hence also communicate more.

The work documented in this thesis is part of the OpenTag project, which has the goal of designing and developing a flexible and more powerful RFID system to meet the needs of the approaching ubiquitous tagging of everyday items. The focus of this thesis is on methods to improve privacy control in item level RFID tags. Several methods for the prevention of unwanted identification and tracking of tagged items are explored in the context of item level tags, which are greatly limited in size, cost, and computational power. A subset of the methods are implemented in RFID reader-side software and in an RFID Tag Emulator that mimics the behavior of an RFID tag while being suitable for time and cost efficient prototyping.

This Thesis describes the synthesis and characterisation of new Group 2 tetrahydroborate, alkoxide and organohydroborate complexes and their uses as catalysts for the living ROP and immortal ring-opening polymerisation (iROP) of ε- caprolactone and rac-lactide. Chapter One introduces cyclic esters and possible mechanistic pathways leading to polyesters by ROP. Living and immortal ROP, including their kinetic characteristics are discussed. An overview of ROP from an industrial perspective is also given. Chapter Two describes the synthesis and characterisation of a new series of Group 2 tetrahydroborate complexes supported by a 3-methyl, 5-tert-butyl tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate ligand. Their activities towards the ROP of ε-caprolactone are presented. Detailed mechanistic studies using spectroscopic techniques are discussed and a new mechanism is proposed. Chapter Three describes the ROP of rac-lactide using the Group 2 tetrahydroborate complexes introduced in Chapter Two, including their mechanistic studies. Chapter Four introduces the new immortal ROP using trialkyl borate and organoborane derivatives as chain-transfer agents (CTAs). The immortal ROP of ε- caprolactone and rac-lactide using Group 2 initiators with trialkyl borates/organoboranes as CTAs from either in situ generation or external addition is discussed. Possible immortal ROP pathways using this new class of CTAs are illustrated. Chapter Five details the synthesis and characterisation of a new series of Group 2 organohydroborate complexes. The ε-caprolactone and rac-lactide ROP activity shown by the complexes presented is discussed and compared with those obtained from the corresponding tetrahydroborate analogues. Chapter Six contains experimental details and characterising data for the new complexes reported in this Thesis. CD Appendix contains .CIF files for all the new crystallographically-characterised complexes.

The ways that young people learn to engage in democratic and other mechanisms for community involvement is a product of how they are socialized into the institutions they inhabit and how they incorporate this socialization into their ongoing construction of identity. In order to become active and agentive members of their society, young people must learn to view themselves as able to productively engage in social practices and social change. Conventional schools are structured in ways that limit opportunities for marginalized students to develop agentive and active social identities. This study suggests that students may construct more agentive identities if they have opportunities to frame their life circumstances and actions in political and historical terms.This project has studied how high school students may construct expanded subject positions as a result of participating in a culturally relevant and explicitly political youth development program. The Project for Conscious Education and Activism (PCEA) incorporates critical and culturally relevant pedagogy with participatory action research. Embedded in a required senior year social studies course, the PCEA provides students a chance to perceive their roles as sociohistorical actors. This two-year ethnographic case study examined shifts in students' academic identities and social agency. Increasing identification with school subject matter fostered intellectual empowerment that often extends beyond the context of school to effect broader social identities. Findings detail the ways that participants can come to see their actions as socially and historically grounded, eventually coming to think of themselves as social actors.Conventional typologies of civic engagement tend to leave out ways that youth of color and those from poor communities resist and address debilitative social disinvestment. But neither do young people tend to think of their actions as constituting social or civic action. Many shifts in subjectivity were apparent as PCEA participants began to frame their actions as intentional intervention in social injustice, becoming "civic" attempts to improve conditions in their communities. As young people learn to see their actions in relation to political and institutional patterns, they may both expand their social agency and increasingly frame their actions as contributing to social justice.

Computer vision and image processing systems are ubiquitous in automotive domain and manufacturing industry. Lane detection warning systems has been an elementary part of the modern automotive industry. Due to the recent progress in the computer vision and image processing methods, economical and flexible use of computer vision is now pervasive and computing with images is not just for the realm of the science, but also for the arts and social science and even for hobbyists. Image processing is a key technology in automotive industry, even now there is hardly a single manufacturing process that is thinkable without imaging. The applications of image processing and computer vision methods in embedded systems platform, is an ongoing research area since many years. OpenCV, an open-source computer vision library containing optimized algorithms and methods for designing and implementing applications based on video and image processing techniques. These method are organized in the form of modules for specific field including, user-graphic interface, machine learning, feature extraction etc [43]. Vision-based automotive application systems become an important mechanism for lane detection and warning systems to alert a driver about the road in localization of the vehicle [1]. In automotive electronic market, for lane detection problem, vision-based approaches has been designed and developed using different electronic hardware and software components including wireless sensor, camera module, Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based systems, GPU and digital signal processors (DSP) [13]. The software module consists on the top of real-time operating systems and hardware description programming language including Verilog, or VHDL. One of the most time critical task of vision based systems is to test system applications in real physical environment with wide variety of driving scenarios and validating the whole systems as per the automotive industry standards. For validating and testing the advanced driver assistance systems, there are some commercial tools available including Assist ADTF from Elektrobit, EB company [43]. In addition to the design and strict real-time requirements for advanced driver assistance systems applications based on electronic components and embedded platform, the complexity and characteristics of the implemented algorithms are two parameters that need to be taken into consideration choosing hardware and software component [13]. The development of vision-based automotive application, based on alone electronic and micro-controller is not a feasible solution approach [35] [13] and GPU based solution are attractive but has many other issues including power consumption. In this thesis project, image and video processing module is used from OpenCV library for road lane detection problems. In proposed lane detection methods, low-level image processing algorithms and methods are used to extract relevant information for lane detection problem by applying contrast analysis at pixel level intensity values. Furthermore, the work at hand presents different approaches for solving relevant partial problems in the domain of lane detection. The aim of the work is to apply contrast analysis based on low-level image processing methods to extract relevant lane model information from the grid of intensity values of pixel elements available in image frame. The approaches presented in this project work are based on contrast analysis of binary mask image frame extracted after applying range threshold. A set of points, available in an image frame, based lane feature models are used for detecting lanes on color image frame captured from video. For the performance measurement and evaluation, the proposed methods are tested on different systems setup, including Linux, Microsoft Windows, CodeBlocks, Visual Studio 2012 and Linux based Rasbian-Jessie operating systems running on Intel i3, AMD A8 APU, and embedded systems based (Raspberry Pi 2 Model B) ARM v7 processor respectively.

Multi-core computer systems have widely been accepted as the future standard in computer architecture. Many simple processing cores bundled together on a single die have been shown more successful in terms of power consumption and execution performance compared to previous large and heavily pipelined uni-core systems. And as the chip dimensions decrease, temperature effects starts to become prominent. Elevated temperature gradients and hotspot on processors put an upper limit on both the execution performance and the life-time of the devices, leading to failures, slowdown and eventually malfunction. Most work involved in software-based temperature management in multi-core systems have been in the kernel-space, hidden from the user. This work hopes to change this, and show that it is possible to make user level schedulers account for temperature changes occurring in the system. OpenMP is the current standard in parallel programming and was used to implement a scheduling policy that uses hardware feedback to effectively try to eliminate elevated temperatures on the chip. The system itself was simulated and modeled using well-established simulators and models. The results were promising, showing a decrease in time spent above the critical temperature with up to 140 times in some benchmarks and a decreased power consumption in all the benchmarks as compared to the Cilk and Breadth-first scheduler. This alone should encourage to more research in this area, and hopefully give rise to a future standard of user level temperature control in parallel based schedulers.

In questa tesi introduciamo la polyhedral compilation, una moltitudine di tecniche volte a rappresentare programmi, specialmente quelli che coinvolgono cicli innestati e vettori, rappresentandoli attraverso poliedri parametrici e sfruttando alcune trasformazioni su di essi per analizzare e ottimizzare automaticamente i programmi dati. In particolare, descriviamo la nostra implementazione di un polyhedral compiler: OPoly. OPoly è un'applicazione realizzata in Python in grado di parallelizzare automaticamente cicli innestati che possono essere espressi attraverso un insieme di equazioni ricorsive uniformi. OPoly analizza dei cicli innestati scritti in pseudolinguaggio e genera del codice sorgente parallelizzabile scritto in C e compreso di direttive OpenMP, che può rimpiazzare l'implementazione seriale originale, senza cambiarne il significato. OPoly sfrutta il linguaggio di modellazione per programmazione a vincoli MiniZinc per modellare il problemi di ottimizzazione dell'approccio poliedrico, che sono cruciali per trovare la trasformazione migliore possibile dal ciclo originale a quello parallelizzabile. Descriviamo l'architettura di OPoly e diamo alcune soluzioni pratiche a problemi che sorgono implementando un polyhedral compiler. Infine, compariamo le prestazioni del codice parallelizzabile generato da OPoly con quelle della relativa implementazione originale, studiando il caso di un noto algoritmo scientifico.

The goal of this thesis is to develop a smartphone application for augmented reality view; it is an initial attempt to realize a driver assistance functionality using just a smartphone and an external lens. Initially it depicts a brief analysis about the most feasible development technologies for mobile application development, selecting a proper lens and positioning of the smartphone in the car. Later, it discusses the strategies for real-time object detection using OpenCV; the video frames are processed using the strategies to find patterns in the videos. Different techniques like Hough-line transform, watershed, contour detection, color segmentation, color thresholding and HAAR cascades are implemented and compared in terms of real time detection of the desired objects. Then a unified algorithm is implemented for the given scenario which overcomes the challenges faced during the conceptualization phase. Finally, the results are depicted with the snapshots of the real time detection done from the smartphone and then evaluated against the vision of the application and the achieved tasks. This thesis is concluded by stating the prospects of this mobile application in the future.

This study is a conscious attempt at opening up the discussion on the Italian giallo film of the 1960’s & 1970’s. Part of its mission is examine views and writings currently available on the giallo and using these to analyse the body of films known as the giallo. It is also an attempt at the generic definition seeing the giallo as a series of thriller films according to Tzvetan Todorov’s model and in depth discussing the influence of the horror story and the whodunit. Beyond that it is a close look upon the form and devices of giallo narration, with focus upon the role of the eyewitness, focalization and point of view as first person narration. The study also traces the giallo’s influences interdisciplinary including placing it in the cultural context of the Italian adult comics known as fumetti neri. The study also includes a close look upon the idea of the eroticised violent set piece tracing it to the French theatre of horror – the Grand Guignol. Furthermore the study addresses the concept of seriality as understood in reference to the giallo. Finally the study examines the role of the giallo hero and suggests that the giallo is posing existential questions, and can be understood as existential suspense thrillers. The findings are exemplified through a wide scope of films including brief references and longer analytic examples elaborating on topical discussions in this developing field of study.

Ring opening of tetraaryl thiirane cation radical was studied. The cation radical of tetraaryl thiirane generated photochemically undergoes C-C bond cleavage driven by inherent ring strain. This ring cleavage occurs in a stereospecific conrotatory manner at low temperature. However, this stereospecificity is lost when the reaction is conducted at room temperature. In this photoreaction between tetraaryl thiirane and tetracyanoethylene, (3+2) cycloadducts are obtained as a result of electron transfer, ring opening, back electron transfer, and 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. A CIDNP experiment and γ-irradiation of 2,2-di-p-anisyl-3,3-diphenylthiirane were conducted to obtain more information about this reaction. Isomeric thiirane S-oxides were prepared to assign the structures of cis- and trans-2,3-di-p-anisyl-2,3-diphenylthiirane used in the stereochemical study of the ring opening reaction. These compounds readily decompose to the corresponding alkenes. This SO extrusion from thiirane S-oxide turns out to be a stereospecific elimination. Tetraaryl thiirane cation radical generated by anodic oxidation underwent C-S bond cleavage rather than C-C bond cleavage which resulted in production of the corresponding olefin. Further oxidation of this olefin under air produces two ketones resulting from C=C bond cleavage. In another approach to cleave the C-C bond of thiirane, ruthenium complexes of thiiranes were prepared but their decomposition did not occur with C-C bond cleavage of the thiirane ring.

Enhancing long, thin, sinuous structures in images is a common problem in image analysis. Mathematical morphology is often used to solve this problem. One approach is known as the path opening. The goal of this project was to investigate whether a preselection of a limited number of paths, based on the upper skeleton of the image, could be used to find an approximate, faster path opening. In this thesis, a new, graph-based algorithm, that is the result of this investigation, is presented. The new algorithm is compared with the traditional path opening and, to some extent, with the parsimonious path opening. Experiments suggest that the implemented algorithm is faster for increasing path length, and runs in linear time with respect to image size. They also suggest that the new algorithm is similar to the traditional path opening when measuring length distributions, while being orders of magnitude faster, thereby making it comparable in speed to the parsimonious path opening, while mitigating the problem of blind spots that the parsimonious path opening suffers from.

Fresh air ventilation openings or windows are essential to most buildings but the openings allow considerable portions of noise to be transmitted from the outdoor into the indoor environment. This project studies relevant theoretical models through accurate numerical solutions, and seeks better designs to gain extra noise attenuation through the openings. The spectral method of Chebyshev collocation and the corresponding technique of out-going wave boundary conditions, for both ducted and flanged opening, are developed as numerical tools and validated by analytical examples. After establishing the numerical tools, two prototype problems are studied. The first is one in which there is no special sound attenuation device. The configuration includes aperture of negligible thickness, aperture of finite thickness and aperture of semi-infinite length. The characteristics of the noise transmission through aperture of finite thickness are investigated with examples of sonic boom and traffic noise. The second prototype problem is the sound attenuation performance of side-branch design of the ducted opening. Side-branch configurations including porous material, single micro-perforated panel, double-layer micro-perforated panels, parallel micro-perforated panels and parallel micro-perforated panels with connected cavity are investigated. They are tested individually with parameters optimized for each of two examples of noise sources. The sound attenuation performances compared using appropriate subjective ratings of the noise sources. It is found that the parallel micro-perforated panels give the best performance for the sonic boom and the double-layer micro-perforated panels serve as the best substitute for the porous material with traffic noise source. Results from experiment are also presented to validate some numerical results.

This study shows that stomata in the isolated epidermis do not behave like those in the intact leaf and that the mesophyll plays an important role in the mechanism of stomatal opening over short periods. The results suggested that the opening of stomata in isolated epidermis was inferior to that in the intact leaf and was influenced by the concentration of KCl in the medium rather than by light. Stomatal opening in isolated epidermis of Commelina was not only insensitive to light but also unaffected by CO2 in the medium containing 100 mol m-3 KCl. The absence of an effect of light and CO2 on the stomata in isolated epidermis and the evidence that they possessed the potential of those in the intact leaf to open wide, suggested that the mesophyll could be important in influencing stomatal opening in the intact leaf. The solution in which the mesophyll cells were incubated was separated by centrifugation. The medium from cells previously incubated in the light caused the stomata in the isolated epidermis to open but that from cells kept in the dark had no effect. Thus the stimulatory influence of the mesophyll cells in bringing about stomatal opening could be separated from the cells into solution. For ease of description it is tentatively suggested that the putative factor which promotes stomatal opening indicated by the results be called stomatin. Stomatin will be produced when the chloroplasts in the mesophyll are exposed to white light.

Book Summary: Beyond New Media: Discourse and Critique in a Polymediated Age examines a host of differing positions on media in order to explore how those positions can inform one another and build a basis for future engagements with media theory, research, and practice. Herbig, Herrmann, and Tyma have brought together a number of media scholars with differing paradigmatic backgrounds to debate the relative applicability of existing theories and in doing so develop a new approach: polymediation. Each contributor’s disciplinary background is diverse, spanning interpersonal communication, media studies, organizational communication, instructional design, rhetoric, mass communication, gender studies, popular culture studies, informatics, and persuasion. Although each of these scholars brings with them a unique perspective on media’s role in people’s lives, what binds them together is the belief that meaningful discourse about media must be an ongoing conversation that is open to critique and revision in a rapidly changing mediated culture. Chapter I. Introduction to the Ladder Polyethers. We introduce the bioactivity of the ladder polyether natural products and provide an overview of the puzzle that is their biogenesis. Cascades of endo-selective epoxide opening inspired by the biosynthetic proposal and promoted by simple neutral water can provide efficient access to these compounds. Chapter II. Water-Promoted Epoxide Opening Accommodates Methyl Substitution. ... Methyl (Me) substitution poses a challenge to the achievement of endo-selective epoxide-opening cascades, as these groups can direct the regioselectivity of epoxide opening. Water as reaction solvent and promoter overcomes such directing effects and enables the incorporation of proximally Me-substituted epoxides into endo-selective cascades. However, Me-substituted epoxides do reduce the overall efficiency of cascades. Chapter III. Kinetics of an Epoxide-Opening Cascade Promoted by Neutral Water. Evidence for a Stepwise Mechanism. ... Detailed investigation of the kinetics of an endo-selective epoxide-opening cascade in water reveals a stepwise mechanism, not a concerted one. Resumen
Opening a door is still a hard problem in robotics. Many robotic manipulators use open-loop position control to open doors, which reduces reusability and reliability in the face of slight differences or sensor errors. Many others use force feedback or impedance control but skip past the problem of grabbing the handle, which could lead to failures due to sensor errors. This research assumes that perception is faulty, and uses joint-level force feedback to probe the location of the door and its handle before attempting to open it. The resulting control strategy is at least 33% faster than the open-loop control system it replaces, and had an 83% success rate during testing in place of the previous method's 60% success rate.

This thesis reports the synthesis of linear and star polycaprolactone via the ring-opening polymerisation of ε-caprolactone using R–OH / tin octanoate as the initiator / catalyst system. The aim of the work carried out in this thesis is to study the polymerisation when conducted using both conventional and microwave heating and develop new synthetic methods for the synthesis of structural polymers via ring-opening polymerisation.
