Texto completoI transcribed 12 videotaped practica, analyzed the transcripts, and interpreted the function and focus of the student conductors' utterances. The findings revealed that the students selected formal and expressive elements for attention, that they used proposals and appraisals to shape these elements in a variety of rehearsal contexts, that they used verbal language to explain, explore, and clarify their musical thinking within and beyond rehearsals.
I concluded that the student conductors built up the sense of the musical work with the players by selectively attending to the musical elements they deemed to be musically valuable, and that their verbal language served a mediating function for them both as shapers and as learners of musical ideas. Although there were qualitative differences how they engaged with their scores, and in their use of verbal language, the processes by which they engaged in construction and comprehension of musical meanings were the same and their verbal language played the same role.
The study led to the postulatation of three socially situated theoretical constructs that are relevant to a general theory of music teaching and learning: a construct of a transactional theory of the musical work, a construct of a 'rehearsal register' and a construct of the interconnectedness of verbal language and the formation of musical concepts and musical knowledge.

Through a bibliographic review, the study reveals the emergence of different approaches related to fingering during de development of musical language and the keyboards instruments. Orientations from composers, pianists and editors indicate the existence of principles determining the choice of fingering. Resumo: Este trabalho estabelece uma relação entre os Prelúdios para Piano de Almeida Prado e o Opus 28, de Frederic Chopin, através da comparação de aspectos técnicos de execução, em ambas as coleções, tendo em vista a concepção de uma interpretação a mais criteriosa possível. A metodologia utilizada parte de nossa experiência como intérprete, da leitura dos textos originais, da anotação de dedilhados, assim como da segmentação de cada Prelúdio em seções ou partes, permitindo a apreensão de componentes estruturais selecionados como o espaço, a linguagem, o tempo e o timbre, além da dinâmica, andamento, fraseado e pedalização, com sugestões de recursos técnicos à execução. O caminho percorrido é o da performance para a análise e as ferramentas utilizadas são primeiro as do intérprete e depois as do teórico ou analista. Complementa o trabalho os dois cadernos de Prelúdios para Piano, de Almeida Prado e uma bibliografia reunindo obras a partir das quais nos embasamos. A conclusão revela a interação entre os recursos de execução, exigidos pela linguagem de Chopin e de Almeida Prado, apresentando a possibilidade de um intercâmbio de procedimentos tanto para um como para outro compositor
Abstract: The purpose of this work is to study a possible relationship between the Preludes for Piano by the Brazilian composer Almeida Prado and Op. 28, by Frederic Chopin through the comparison of technical aspects of performance and a critical interpretation. The methodology is based on my experience as a performer, from readings of the original scores, fingering notations, as well as the segmentation of each Prelude. This permitted the comprehension of structural components such as space, musical language, time, timbre, dynamics, tempo, phrasing and pedaling indications. This study departs from performance to analysis and the tools employed thus began with the performer's resources, then those of the theorist or analyst. In this manner, technical resources for interpretation were suggested to obtain a refined performance. Besides, this study was also complemented by both volumes of Preludes for the Piano by Almeida Prado, followed by a bibliography. The conclusion reveals the possibility of interaction between the performance resources required by the musical language presented by Chopin, as well as by Prado. It demonstrates the possibility of an inter-exchange of procedures for either composer

Resumo: A presente dissertação tem como objetivo investigar a performance musical do baterista norte-americano Bill Stewart, detentor de uma maneira de tocar única e um dos músicos predominantes do jazz atualmente. Dando continuidade à pesquisa "A linguagem singular de Bill Stewart na bateria", que determinou alguns dos elementos definidores de sua performance no instrumento, o intuito desta dissertação é identificar se esses traços característicos possuem semelhança com a abordagem de outros bateristas, presentes nas décadas de 1950 e 1960, como Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams e Roy Haynes. A metodologia deste trabalho consiste na delimitação do repertório, na transcrição de músicas selecionadas, e o posterior estudo comparativo. As entrevistas com Stewart serviram para cruzar informações e confirmar algumas das conclusões dessa análise. A pesquisa nos permitiu organizar um material comparativo, o qual coloca em discussão se as semelhanças encontradas entre a abordagem de Stewart e a dos bateristas de décadas anteriores a ele caracterizam-se como suas possíveis influências musicais no instrumento
Abstract: This dissertation has as goal to investigate the musical performance of the American drummer Bill Stewart, detainer of a peculiar way of playing and one of the predominant jazz musicians nowadays. Continuing the research "The peculiar language of Bill Stewart on drumset", which determinate some defining elements of his performance on the instrument, this dissertation aims to identify whether those characteristic traits are similar to the approach of other drummers, which acted in the decades of 1950 and 1960, such as Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and Roy Haynes. The methodology utilized in this research consists of definition of the repertory, transcription of selected works, and a further comparative study. The interviews with Stewart served to cross check the information and to confirm some of the outputs of this analysis. This study allowed us to organize a comparative material that discuss if the similarities founded between the Stewart's approach and the musical language of the drummers of the preceding decades to him could be considered as his musical influences on drumset

Resumo: O presente trabalho tem como principal objetivo realizar um estudo analítico e interpretativo das Variações para Fagote e Orquestra de Alceo Bocchino. Para introduzir e contextualizar a pesquisa, apresenta no Capítulo I levantamento biográfico da vida do compositor e do intérprete Noël Devos, a quem a peça foi dedicada, e considerações sobre o Fagote e a forma `Tema e Variações¿. O Capítulo II focaliza a obra. Inicialmente apresenta o contexto histórico da composição e da orquestração, e considerações sobre análise, interpretação e performance. Segue com a análise musical da obra através das técnicas desenvolvidas por Arnold Schoenberg, Wallace Berry e Joaquín Zamacois, e com o estudo interpretativo a partir da abordagem de Sonia Albano de Lima. Do estudo analítico-interpretativo são levantadas informações a respeito da linguagem utilizada na composição, relações recorrentes entre as Variações, bem como sobre a utilização de elementos específicos da técnica do fagote. De acordo com essa investigação analítica, estão indicadas sugestões sobre a execução da obra, apontando aspectos relevantes da interpretação. A conclusão reúne informações essenciais obtidas da análise efetuada, da entrevista realizada com o compositor e com o intérprete no Rio de Janeiro, e de suas orientações a respeito da execução da obra. Em anexo se encontram a partitura editada e revisada, a transcrição da entrevista e a gravação do DVD da obra, todas realizadas pelo autor desta pesquisa
Abstract: The main objective of the present research is to develop an analytical and interpretative study of Variations for Bassoon and Orchestra by Alceo Bocchino. For the sake of contextualization, presents in Chapter I biographical data of the composer and of the performer Noël Devos - whom the piece was dedicated -, aspects of the Bassoon and of the form 'Theme and Variations'. Chapter II focuses on the piece proper. Initially presents the composition and orchestration¿s historical context, followed by features of musical analysis, interpretation and performance. The Analysis of the piece is based on the techniques developed by Arnold Schoenberg, Wallace Berry and Joaquín Zamacois, and on the interpretative study of Sonia Albano Lima¿s approach. The aim of the analytical and interpretative study is to provide information about the compositional language, recurrent relations between the Variations, as well as to indicate the use of specific elements of the bassoon technique. According to this analytical research, there are suggestions concerning the performance of the piece, pointing to relevant aspects of interpretation. The conclusion gathers the most prominent information acquired from the overall Analysis of the work and from the complementary interview with the composer and the performer in Rio de Janeiro, and their guidelines regarding the performance of this piece as well. As appendixes, there are the edited and revised score, the interview¿s transcription and the DVD recording of the piece, all of them held by the author of this research

Resumo: A presente pesquisa tem como principal objetivo encontrar caminhos para interpretação da obra "Dez Ponteios para Piano" de Nilson Lombardi, compositor do período nacionalista oriundo da escola de composição de Camargo Guarnieri. Para contextualizar a pesquisa foi traçado inicialmente um breve relato sobre vida e obra do compositor, bem como realizado um levantamento sobre a aplicabilidade do termo Ponteio na música brasileira. A metodologia partiu da delimitação dos procedimentos para abordagem analítica. Esta constitui uma ferramenta que contribui para a compreensão da obra e fornece subsídios para auxiliar e fundamentar as decisões interpretativas, a fim de se chegar a uma interpretação válida. Este trabalho é complementado com a gravação de um Compact Disc realizada pela autora da pesquisa
Abstract: The main objective of this research is to provide interpretative options of the "Ten Ponteios for Piano" by Nilson Lombardi, nationalist composer from Camargo Guarnieri composition school. For a better understanding of this process a brief account of the life and works of the composer is first presented, as well as a discussion of the Ponteio concept and the applicability of this term in Brazilian music. The methodology consists on delimitation of the procedures for analytical approach. This is a tool to contribute to a better understanding of the work and provide additional subsidies to assist and help on interpretative decisions. In this dissertation is also included a compact disc recording of Ten Ponteios interpretated by this author

Texto completoDie doel van die verhandeling is om vas te stel in hoe 'n mate vyftien geselekteerde studies van Fernando Sor uit die Yepes- en Segovia-uitgawes van mekaar verskil deur die studies te vergelyk. Albei uitgawes is ook met die faksimilee-uitgawe vergelyk om die korrektheid van die Yepes- en Segoviauitgawes te bepaal. Seide Yepes en Segovia het heelwat veranderings aangebring. Die kenmerkendste van hierdie verskille word nie net uitgewys nie, maar daar word ook na moontlike redes gekyk waarom sulke verskille in die twee uitgawes aangebring is. Die gevolgtrekking is dat Yepes en Segovia duidelike redes gehad het waarom hulle verskil het van die faksimilee-uitgawe. Yepes en Segovia het verskillende tegniese benaderings wat bydra tot die uniekheid van die twee uitgawes wat vir die kitaarspeler 'n rykdom van moontlikhede bied in die uitvoering van hierdie studies.
The aim of the dissertation is to determine the differences between the Yepes and Segovia editions by comparing selected studies. In order to determine the correctness of the Yepes and Segovia editions both are compared to the facsimile edition as well. Yepes and Segovia both introduced a number of changes. The most typical of these are indicated and possible reasons for their inclusion in the two editions are discussed. The conclusion is that Yepes as well as Segovia had very definite reasons for including alterations to the facsimile edition in their own editions. Both have in their own editions an individual and highly personal approach which leaves us with the unique gifts of the two editions, and the guitar student with a variety of possibilities in the performance of these studies.

What is it about the vocal melodies of popular music that make you want to listen again and again? This music-theoretical study applies principles of Gestalt psychology and theories of expectation to a study of melodic hooks in 21st-century popular music. The hypothesis tested here is that melodic hooks are a vital element in “catchiness”. Transcription and analysis of melodies by major recording artists is used to explore the note-to-note basis for melodic hooks. The analysis of recordings by Adele, Carly Rae Jepsen, Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke shows how factors of repetition, familiarity, simplicity, resolution, ambiguity of key, and expectation all contribute to the sense of catchiness in music. A listener-response study was used to test the experience of catchiness in the case studies, and corroborates the hypothesis that catchiness depends principally on expectation as an overarching factor. The study also uses auto-ethnographic reflection on the practice of song-writing to give insight into strategies for creating catchy popular songs. The experience of composing a pop song, and releasing it on air, provides unique insight into the artistic process. The results of all these studies show that the perceptual principle of expectation is a crucial factor in the experience of catchiness.
