Resumen
In the northern Great Plains of Canada, there has been limited research conducted on reduced-tillage grain production systems managed organically. The objective was to adapt an organic rotational no-till system to the growing conditions of Manitoba, and to test its agronomic performance. A set of four experiments were conducted between 2010 and 2012, in Carman, MB, Canada. Mulches with hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) showed the most promising results, producing the highest mulch biomass and organic no-till spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yield. Organic flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) yield

Three organic mulches were tested: compost, vermi-castings and woodchips, as well as an inorganic mulch, geotextile fabric, and were compared against clean cultivation. The organic treatments resulted in improved physical conditions (lower bulk densities) in the heavier soil, as wel

Rising demand for organic soybeans (Glycine max L.), coupled with high price premiums for organic products, has producers interested in making the transition to organic soybean production. However, organic soybean producers and those making the transition cite weed management as their biggest limitation. Current organic weed management relies heavily on cultivation. Cultivation has negative consequences on soil health and producers are interested in organic reduced and no-till production. Rye (Secale cereal L. cv. Rymin) cover crop was evaluated for weed suppression abilities and effects on so

In the organic cropping system, with the use of soil mulching it is possible to significantly reduce weed incidence in a crop stand, to enrich the soil with nutrients and to obtain the highest yield of satisfactory quality. Having discontinued mulching, its residual effect on agricultural crops persists. The effect of previously used and soil-incorporated organic mulches on weed emergence, soil properties and agricultural crops persists for a different period of time and becomes weaker with time.<br>Ekologinės žemdirbystės sistemoje, naudojant dirvožemio mulčiavimą, galima iš esmės sumažinti p

Vegetable producers may benefit from integrating living mulches into their operations to manage weeds and improve soil quality. Living mulches, however, can reduce vegetable yield through competition. Here we investigate strip tilling into living mulches and then direct seeding a vegetable crop in the strip till zone as a production practice to limit competition. We further investigate the use of two surface-applied mulches, a newsprint hydromulch and a compost blanket, for weed control within the strip till zone. In field conditions, living mulches reduced vegetable yield by 49-84% and the us

Reduced tillage and living mulches are alternative management strategies that can improve soil quality by minimizing disturbance and building soil organic matter. Weed suppression by these two practices alone is often insufficient to avoid crop yield losses, but their performance in an integrated system is not well understood. This project investigated the production of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in conventional tillage and strip tillage with a living mulch of teff (Eragrostis tef Zucc.) and Korean lespedeza (Kummerowia stipulacea Maxim.). Resumen
A field study evaluating the sustainability of four organic vegetable production systems was conducted in Lexington, Kentucky in 2006 and 2007. The four systems included no-till, raised beds covered with biodegradable black mulch, bare ground with shallow cultivation, and bare ground with shallow cultivation and wood chip mulch. The two-year study compared yield, weed control, labor, and costs associated with each system, as well as physical, chemical, and microbiological soil characteristics. In 2006, tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were grown in the four systems, with no significant

An alternative to herbicides in dwarf apple orchards (Malus pumila Mill.) is the use of mulches. Research objectives were to compare several mulch systems (Festuca rubra L., Lupinus albus L. plus Daucus carota L.; straw, manure compost, geotextile) with soil cultivation as to soil physical properties and plant nutrient levels in soils, leaves and fruit. Studies carried out in 1992 and 1993 on three dwarf apple orchards on the Macdonald Campus of McGill University showed that straw mulch increased soil water contents and exchangeable K, but reduced exchangeable Mg compared to Festuca mulch. Land application of wood ash is becoming more appealing, as a disposable alternative, to landfilling options. It is estimated that 110,000 tonnes of wood ash is produced annually in Alberta by cogeneration systems, a large percentage produced in Central and Peace River Regions of Alberta. Alkaline (pH-13) properties and nutrient content of wood ash provides an alternative for the acidic and nutrient deficient soils within these regions. The objective of this field study was to determine the effect wood ash applications would have under field conditions on: the chemical and physical properties

Conservation tillage programs have been successfully implemented for many agronomic cropping systems, but adoption of reduced tillage for vegetable crops has been slow. As many conventionally managed conservation tillage programs rely on synthetic herbicides for clean cultivation, alternative methods must be devised to suppress weed pressure and reduce reliance on mechanical cultivation to aid in the development of reduced tillage programs for organic cropping system. Strip tillage is a reduced tillage method that is well suited to vegetable crop production, and the utilization of cover crops
