Near-infrared (NIR) light, with wavelengths of 650 to 900 nanometers, effectively penetrates tissues. The high signal to noise ratio and low phototoxicity of NIR light makes this wavelength range ideal for deep tissue imaging. However, current NIR fluorophores are generally large hydrophobic molecules that are prone to aggregation. This thesis deals with the study of oxazoline-based ligands in metal-catalyzed asymmetric reactions. The first part describes the synthesis of six new bifunctinal pyridine-bis(oxazoline) ligands and their applications in asymmetric metal-catalysis. These ligands, in addition to a Lewis acid coordination site, are equipped with a Lewis basic part in the 4-position of the oxazoline rings. This dissertation describes the investigation of the utility of metal–bis(oxazoline) complexes in catalytic asymmetric reactions. The development of Cu(II)-catalyzed regio- and enantioselective additions of silylketenthioacetals into diketones is discussed in the first chapter. \(Cu(OTf)_2(t-BuBox)\) complexes were found to be an effective catalyst with a broad substrate scope, providing tertiary alcohols in high yields, regioselectivities, and enantioselectivities. X- and Q-band EPR/ENDOR spectroscopy was used to study the structure of a series of heteroleptic and homoleptic copper(II)-bis(oxazoline) complexes, based on the (−)-2,2′-isopropylidenebis[(4S)-4-phenyl-2-oxazoline] (1) ligand and bearing different counterions (chloride versus triflate); labelled [Cu(II)(1a-c)].
