Resumen
This thesis is about encounters, ways of knowing and similarities between Paraguayan, Maskoy people and the anthropologist in Puerto Casado, Paraguay. By discussing these topics, I will explore the borders that mark the relationship between all these subjects, and I will emphasise the mechanisms that can be deployed in order to cross them. I begin by tracing the history of Maskoy people, showing all the encounters and events that have led, in the 1980s, to the legalisation of Territory Riacho Mosquito and to the birth of Maskoy people, as a collective subject and owner of the land. In particular, I describe the events that allowed the creation of Territory Riacho Mosquito from two distinctive points of view: one that of indigenous people, and the other that of the missionaries. By comparing the two perspectives, two different ontologies come to light, and in particular the role of shamans in the fight for land.

Credit risk is often a critical risk in the financial sector. Therefore, how a financial institution manages its credit risk is an important determinant of profitability and solvency. In this regard, the identification and measurement of credit risk is the first component of efficient risk management. Correct and timely credit ratings are important for risk management systems, and for informing regulators about financial system risks. Credit risk is the main risk faced by the Paraguayan financial sector. Effectively managing it requires banking supervision and regulation in line with international best practices. As a step in that direction, this research assesses the Paraguayan banking regulation of credit risk and compares it to the principles and the best practices about credit risk management issued by the Basel Committee. I propose principles to guide the implementation of statistical models for better measurement of credit risk in Paraguayan financial institutions.

Resumen
The purpose with this thesis was to investigate the occurrence of racist discourses presented and expressed in the newspapers and in the Porteño society in connection to the occupation of the park Parque Indoamericano, in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in December 2010. The park was occupied by families from the nearby shanty town, Villa 20, many of them originated from neighboring countries such as Bolivia and Paraguay. The occupation acted as a protest to the passiveness and inaction of the city’s government to solve the growing housing deficit. The prevalence of racist discourses was investigated through adopting discourse analysis as a method of analyzing the articles from four national newspapers, and upon the commentaries made by readers as a response to those articles, at the time of the occupation. Racist discourses were found in both the articles and the commentaries; however these types of discourses seemed to be more vividly and openly expressed in the commentaries, rather than in the articles themselves.

Resumen
Large-scale, multispecies monitoring programs are used widely to assess changes in wildlife populations; however, they often assume constant detectability when documenting species occurrence. This assumption is rarely accurate because animal populations vary considerably across time and space. Furthermore, detectability of a species can be influenced by a number of physical, biological, or anthropogenic factors (e.g., weather, seasonality, topography, sampling methods, urban development). Analyses of habitat factors affecting occupancy and detection of mammalian species have not been conducted in the Paraguayan Chaco. To address this gap in the literature and provide conservation recommendations, I estimated site occupancy rates using species-specific detection probabilities for focal mammalian species at 3 study sites in the Chaco ecoregion of Paraguay. During remote camera surveys conducted August - November 2011 - 2012, I used photographic data and model selection techniques to assess the influence of different survey and site covariates on occupancy of several focal mammalian species: maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), Geoffroy's cat (Leopardus geoffroyi), puma (Puma concolor), crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), pampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus), collared peccary (Pecari tajacu), white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari), South American tapir (Tapirus terrestris), and giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla). I recorded 2,034 photographs of 24 mammalian species at 64 camera sites; among those, 1,353 photographs and 529 independent survey-detections were of these 9 focal species. Detection of maned wolves and peccaries was higher in 2011 than 2012; other species did not show significant differences in detection by year. Peccaries were detected more frequently during higher temperatures, but foxes were detected more frequently during lower temperatures. The crab-eating fox was the species occupying the most sites (68%) and white-lipped peccary was the rarest, occupying only 30% of the study area. Anthropogenic disturbances (i.e., urban areas, paved roads, and human structures) negatively affected most species. Maned wolves and collared peccaries appeared to prefer grasslands, while puma and crab-eating fox used areas closer to water. White-lipped peccaries appeared to be most common or widely-distributed at the Toro Mocho study site. My research will provide land managers and conservation planners with an understanding of how mammals are distributed across the Paraguayan Chaco, as well as informing future decisions concerning land use and development by the rural human population. To further broad-scale conservation goals, wildlife biologists in Paraguay should seek partnerships with rural stakeholders to mitigate the effects of continuing agro-industrial development. Moreover, additional protected areas and buffers should be sought to maintain lands in natural conditions, including large areas set aside as wildlife reserves.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Paraguayan Justice has been going through a period of deep transformation. The Justice has many challenges to face. Those challenges should be regarded as opportunities for transformation and not as threats. It is a fact that information and communication technology (ICT) per se cannot solve all current challenges; however, it can offer solutions to the many problems that confront the judiciary. In that sense, ICT development becomes the best ally of Justice. The Information, Technology, Processes, Objectives and values, Staff and skills, Management systems and structures, and Other resources (ITPOSMO) dimensions described by Heeks (2006) are applied as the basis for evaluating ICT in the judicial sphere. This research validates the opinion of the users with regard to ICT projects. Judges, court and administrative officials, managers and lawyers constitute the unit of analysis of this study. These stakeholders were interviewed and requested to complete a survey. The study reveals the high level of relevance that ICT holds for the judiciary, in the sense of providing information and tools for interacting with different users. The objective of ICT is to act as support for improving court and administrative performance through the different ICT systems. Nonetheless, this research has also uncovered limitations and flaws in the current information systems. These flaws tend to turn the benefits that ICT systems can bring into constraints. This study makes various suggestions on how to overcome those flaws. The most important suggestion is the development of a holistic approach when ICT projects are conceived. Likewise, the early involvement of stakeholders who will be influenced by any ICT initiative should be encouraged.

Villagra, Carron Rodrigo Juan. "The two shamans and the owner of the cattle : alterity, storytelling and shamanism amongst the Angaité of the Paraguayan Chaco". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/965.

Texto completo
Resumen
My thesis examines from an ethnographic account how history has been made, told and interpreted by the Angaité people of the Chaco since the Paraguayan nation-state effectively carried out the colonization of this territory in the 19th century until the present day. The key elements of this account are the Angaité’s notions and practices on alterity, storytelling and shamanism and how they interplay with one another. I explore the notions of alterity and its counterpart similarity in the context of multiple material transactions in which the Angaité engage both among themselves and with outsiders. I also examine the inseparable socio-moral evaluations attached to such transactions. I show how certain transactions such as exchange or commoditisation do not necessarily conflict with good social relations. Nevertheless, the closest relationships – preferably evoked in kinship terms - are constantly constructed by the combination of several practices including sharing, pooling, cohabitation and companionship and the relational morality that underpins them. This relational morality, I argue, is both inscribed and enacted through the telling of Nanek Any’a narratives –“Old news/events”. I analyze some of these narratives in order to show how the Angaité people interpret the consequences of the colonization of the Chaco. For this I provide an intelligible context for the Nanek Any’a that may otherwise appear contradictory or incomprehensible to a non-Angaité listener. The Angaité’s versions of history compared to the official accounts challenge the simplistic of the Angaité as “acculturated” and a homogenous indigenous people and situate them as main actors of their own lives. Rather than the Angaité being the victims of history the Nanek Any’a emphasize that it was the mistakes and failing of their ancestors in their original encounter with the Paraguayans that resulted in an unbalanced relationship with the latter in socio-economic terms. In addition to this, I describe in the light of the historical processes undergone in the lives of the Angaité, how the shamanic discourses and capacities and Angaité cosmology have changed. I explore how they have constantly incorporated external elements, and thus such shamanic elements pervades contemporary areas of life and interactions that include not only the paradigmatic indigenous shaman, but unusual figures such as pastors, powerful outsiders and leaders.

Kurzwelly, Jonatan. "Being German and being Paraguayan in Nueva Germania : arguing for 'contextual epistemic permissibility' and 'methodological complementarity'". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/12180.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis involves a collaborative study of emic articulations and quotidian ways of ‘being German' and ‘being Paraguayan' in Nueva Germania, a rural municipality in Paraguay. An argument is made that the social categories focused upon during this thesis, were evoked according to different contexts. While many claimed that Germanness or Paraguayanness were key categories, essentialistic characteristics that defined them and others as people of a certain kind, in other situations these social divisions were disregarded or even contradicted. This leads me to the theoretical conclusion that social categories, and epistemic frameworks more broadly, should not be understood as universally relevant or as universally applicable, and should not be treated as such. The thesis therefore proposes to assume ‘contextual epistemic permissibility' as a key axiom for use within anthropology and in the wider social sciences. The possible theoretical and methodological consequences of such an assumption are elaborated upon. Different theories of self, social action, and agency are debated in the course of this thesis: it is asked which might best analytically accommodate the assumption of contextual epistemic permissibility. Furthermore, in order to reflect the multiplicity of emic epistemic frameworks, the thesis proposes that a notion of ‘analytical and representative complementarity' be introduced, rather than monistic theoretical models. Such complementarity is practised in the thesis through the use of different multiscalar analyses (for example, the use of different theories of nationalism), and through the simultaneous use of different forms of representation. The above theoretical divagations are intertwined and related to the individual stories of twelve people from Nueva Germania, and are presented with both textual and photographic means. The stories were created through a collaborative process. Each project participant was free to decide upon the subject of their account, and therefore the resulting stories are able to cover a variety of different themes, at the same time introducing the reader to individual histories, struggles, opinions, plans, and critiques. Some elements of these accounts directly relate to the theoretical debates focused upon within the thesis while other elements of the individual stories are left to speak for themselves, and for the reader to make sense of independently. The photographs and texts, in their intertextual presentation, allow for an embodiment of the argument concerning representational complementarity.

Resumen
The lack of data on subsistence and land-use patterns often impedes the design of ecologically sustainable, culturally appropriate, socially acceptable and politically feasible approaches to the legalisation of land tenure among indigenous peoples. With specific reference to Amerindians of the Gran Chaco, this thesis shows the extent to which a participatory research methodology can empower indigenous peoples in generating, articulating and communicating data which are vital to the support of their land claims. Fieldwork was conducted with Angaite Indians of the Paraguayan Chaco between 1994 and 1996. Participatory research methods included a census of ten villages (pop. 1,005), drawings of subsistence activities, a survey of material possessions, a time-allocation study, self-kept records of food intake, anthropometric measurements of children, self-kept records on wildlife use (in ten villages), and Indian-made maps of land-use. Satellite imagery provided the basis for the geographic analysis of landuse patterns at local and regional scales. The Angaite own some land but are surrounded by privately owned cattle ranches. Their actual land and resource-use patterns extend over an area ten times greater than that to which they are legally entitled. Although horticulture and paid labour are now the mainstay of the Indian subsistence economy, hunting and fishing continue to provide over 90% of their meat consumption. Hunting patterns are shown to affect a large number of animals but only a small number of species. Land-use is focused on the communal exploitation of resources at key sites spread over broad areas of land. This concept is not catered for in the current Paraguayan legislation, which is based on the principle of giving families a plot of land to farm. On the basis of data generated by the Angaite, this study underlines the need for a radical rethinking of how Indian land-rights might be legalised in a manner which enhances the ecological sustainability of their respective lifestyles. Fundamental to that rethinking is the empowerment of indigenous peoples to express and communicate their own views on their own needs for land.

Grant, Suzanne. "Becoming similar : knowledge, sociality and the aesthetics of relatedness amongst the Nivacle of the Paraguayan Chaco". Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/1672.

Texto completo
Resumen
This thesis is an exploration of the concepts of knowledge, sociality and relatedness amongst the Nivacle indigenous people of the Paraguayan Chaco, concentrating particularly on the community of Jotoicha in the Mennonite Colonies of the Central Chaco region. A central issue in this thesis is the concept of "knowledge" as a relational capacity and the ways in which knowledgeable behaviour can be constitutive of aesthetically pleasing forms of sociality. Such practices can be generative of increased similarity between individuals over time. The thesis begins with an exploration of Nivacle understandings of "knowledge" and shows it to be an eminently social concept that is created in an organ located in the stomach known as the cachi. "Knowledge" for the Nivacle is the basis for an individual's social conscience, their productive and reproductive skills, as well as their inter-personal relationships. "Knowledge" is also a central aspect of Nivacle understandings of relatedness. Rather than being based on a static genealogical structure, relatedness is best understood within the context of lived relationships that are constantly evolving. These relationships are generated through the practices of feeding and caring for one's "close" kin, with such practices also being generative of sociality itself. However,"close" relationships are neither static nor geographically bounded and are always open to the possibility of re-activation through visiting and gift giving. The Nivacle have been inserted into the market economy for several decades. Wage labour is conceptualised alongside other "subsistence activities" and productive activities are generative both of gender relations and sociality itself. In the final chapter I discuss Nivacle notions of reciprocity within the context of team-based sporting events. I show that whilst such community-based divisions appear to be premised on relations of "sameness" and "difference," they are best understood within the context of an overarching desire for people to generate similarity between different kinds of people in a variety of contexts.

This research aims at describing the relationship between the sentence intonation of the Paraguayan Guarani and the melody of Paraguayan popular songs. Ferreira Netto (2006) model of analysis was used. He analyzed the Portuguese prosody considering the fundamental Frequency as a temporal series. The data were collected through field research. Analysis and tabulation of data were conducted using the software ExProsodia. The analysis focused specifically the end of sentences of spoken Guarani and the melody of songs. The results pointed out that the end of the spoken sentences as well as songs were similar and mainly plagal.

The purpose of this research is to analyze and interpret the political and economical thought of Dr. José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia [1766-1840], a recognized intellectual, leader of the Paraguayan independence and countrys Supreme Dictator between 1814 and 1840. From personal correspondence, orders and decrees written by the Paraguayan dictator, the research aims at understanding different aspects of his thought and, to some extent, compare them with certain actions of his government. This objective is contextualized by an overview of the economic, political and social features of Paraguay, from the colonial period to the beginning of the process of South American independence and the subsequent political rise of Dr. Francia, determined, in turn, by the vicissitudes of the regional crisis that led to the forming of national states on the Río de la Plata Basin.

This study discusses Augusto Roa Bastoss novel Vigilia del Almirante (1992). The thematic axis and theoretical grounds of this dissertation were established with the purpose of investigating the relations between reality and language in the scope of historical fiction more specifically, in metafictional historical novel, a genre that problematizes its own discursive nature, establishing itself as a linguistic construction and directly opposing the classical model that values a realistic account of historical deeds and processes in a fable that is verisimilarly and linearly developed. This Romanesque project is summarized by Roa Bastos himself, in a sentence extracted from Yo el Supremo (1974): Writing does not mean to turn what is real into words, but to make words real. This research emphasizes the use of mythical discourse and transcendental exile (a rupture between life and language) as fundamental elements of structure in Vigilia del Almirante. Roa Bastos explores the inconsistency between reality and words experienced by the historical Columbus, correlating it to two other transcendental exiles: D. Quixotes and that of the guarani civilization. In addition, in this work the author reuses some constructions from Yo el Supremo, a novel that is also structured around myth and whose protagonist, who is in transcendental exile, is also associated to Cervantes roving rider. These choices are combined to originate an unlikely, non-linear novel, without the predominance of dramatic evocation, marked by the presence of different conflicting voices. This characterizes Vigilia del Almirante as a complete, ambiguous, polyphonic and self-critical work that does not present itself as the only possible standpoint on the theme. This fictional strategy aims to question traditional, conservative and mythicizing portrayals and historiographies on Christopher Columbus, unveiling their purely linguistic nature and not accepting them as a universal truth.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the strategies developed by slaves to free themselves on the southern border of Brazil, along with daily experiences of these captives in the city of Jaguarão between 1865 and 1888. This proposals aim is to better understand slaves as historical subjects who managed to negotiate their own freedom through strategic battles in the border region between Brazil and Uruguay, in the midst of the Paraguayan War and the abolition of slavery in Brazil. Therefore, to develop this thesis we seek to grasp the daily dynamics of slaves in the resort town of Jaguarão before and during the international armed conflict with Paraguay, in order to understand the relationships between masters and slaves along the border. It is pertinent to also point out the effects of the impact of the Triple Alliance War on the southern society, focusing on the return of freed blacks to Jaguarao in order to emphasize the problem of including these men in the netting of the social web of this southern region. Issues such as the re-enslavement of black soldiers, the effectiveness of the combatants in the armed forces, and also the important role of the soldiers released in the process of the abolition of slavery in Jaguarão will be assessed and intertwined in this research.

Resumen

The speeches given by Pedro Segundo and Getulio Vargas during wartime not only reveals their orientation of leadership but in turn provides something else. These discourses gives one a unique window into not only how these leaders chose to perceive the challenges of wartime but how to address them to the national populace. The rhetoric they used had to transform for purposes of mobilization while adapting to shifting political environments. Among one of the features of this adaptation was the choice of which aspects of the national consciousness to stress at pivotal moments. By examining the public speeches of Pedro Segundo and Getulio Vargas one can see the political orientation of both leaders, understand the political climate of both periods, and witness how much Brazil had changed in the eighty-one years between the beginning of the Paraguayan War and the end of WWII.

Resumen
This study focused on the level of success Unicef in Paraguay had in communicating its message concerning child street-workers to the press in Asunción. We also examined how the communication works between Unicef and the journalists, and how child street-workers appear in the press according to our sources. We based our study on the theoretical understanding of media logic and planned communication. These theories were useful to explain the possibilities and obstacles Unicef faces in its communication with the press. Our study builds on qualitative research interviews with journalists, communication staff at Unicef and the coordinator of the Global Agency of News, an organization that monitors how children appear in the Paraguayan press.   We found that the communication between Unicef and the journalists is very important and highly valued by both Unicef and the Paraguayan newspapers. The relationship builds on constant trade, where both parts depend on each other. Unicef needs attention from the press in order to spread its message to the general public. The journalists need Unicef because the organization works as a trustable information source to back-up their articles regarding childhood.   No one in our study was satisfied with the way child street-workers appear in the press. The children are often showed as victims or criminals and children’s rights are not always considered. A central problem is that awareness about children’s rights is low, both in the Paraguayan society and among many journalists. Unicef succeeds quite well in their communication with the journalists that are already aware of children’s rights. But the organization does not succeed in communicating with a big part of the press, as a lot of articles are still discriminative towards child street-workers.

Resumen
The aims of this PhD programme were: optimisation of conditions for clonal isolation of Trypanosoma cruzi from individual triatomine bugs and molecular characterisation of clonal isolates from field sites in Paraguay, with special consideration given to host/vector associations and transmission cycles, and further characterisation of putative parents and experimental hybrid progeny of T cruzi 1. with comparison of hybrid genotypes and field isolates from Paraguay. The development of an optimised solid medium plating technique allowed the resolution of mixed infections by the isolation of clonal colonies of T cruzi from single triatomine bugs and experimentally infected mice. Some nutrient plate types produced rapid growth with high plating efficiencies and longer colony viability in comparison with previous methods. Using this technique growth was also possible without the use of a CO2 incubator. Paraguayan isolates were characterised from mammal hosts, sylvatic T infestans, and domestic T infestans from several geographical locations. Isolates were characterised by phenotyping and by genotyping large and small subunit rRNA and mini-exon genes. Analysis enabled assignment of isolates into one of two major lineages (TCI or TC2), and further attribution to one of five subgroups of TC2 (a-e). In Paraguay isolates were all subgroups of TC2. We identified TC2b, TC2c. TC2d and Tc2e circulating in Paraguay. TC2b, TC2d and TC2e were present in domestic cycles (with a predominance of TC2e, 55.2%) and TC2c, TC2b and TC2d in sylvatic cycles. Two species of armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus; TC2c, TC2d and Euphractus sexcinctus; TC2b, TC2d) were identified as sylvatic reservoirs of T cruzi. These findings accord with our theory that terrestrial armadillos and rodents may have an evolutionary association with TC2. Sylvatic colonies of the vector T infestans were identified from two locations in the Paraguayan Chaco. T cruzi infection in sylvatic T infestans was identified as TC2b. This vector was previously regarded as almost exclusively domestic. and this finding has significant implications for future vector surveillance programmes in Paraguay. By further characterisation of hybrid clones it has been proved for the first time that T cruzi has an extant capacity for genetic exchange. Two genetically transformed putative parental types and six double drug resistant clones, previously isolated by coinfection of mammal cells, were analysed by isoenzyme phenotype, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPDs), karyotype analysis and DNA sequencing. These results, together with parallel work performed within our group, suggest an unusual mechanism of genetic exchange involving fusion of parental genotypes and subsequent loss of alleles in polyploid progeny, in conjunction with homologous recombination, and uniparental inheritance of kinetoplast maxicircle DNA. There were parallels between experimentally generated hybrids and natural isolates. The implications of genome fusion and aneuploidy are profound and the mechanism is likely to be widespread providing a possible means of rapid speciation and evolution.

Resumen
This thesis aims to contribute to current discussions on citizenship and transnationalism by analyzing the circumstances of Paraguayan, Bolivian and Peruvian immigrants in Argentina. More precisely, I examine the impact that state-promoted criminalizing discourses had on the lives of these immigrants in La Plata city in the late 1990s. On the one hand, their access to public services and resources was importantly constrained, submerging many into increasingly pauperized conditions. On the other hand, new distinctions were created within these nationally defined groups as a result of discursive and residential strategies deployed by many of these immigrants.

One may approach the Kinikinau through its pottery. Looking to give visibility to their existence, this indigenous people from the Paraguayan Chaco, presently installed in the state Mato Grosso do Sulk, created and recreated survival strategies not to be erased from their own history, receiving in recent times an official recognition that had been once denied. The pottery produced currently by their women, is an example of the strategy driven by them to make it less invisible in the context of indigenous peoples of Mato Grosso do Sul. Without land of their own, living for nearly a century on lands of others for years such as the Kadiwéu Indian Reserve - the Kinikinau people were discovered to be Chané-Guaná or Terena. Nowadays, a small portion of the population struggle for an identity that might be legitimately Kinikinau. This study aims to discuss the aspects that led to the alleged disappearance of the Kinikinau looking for reference in ethnological literature of the twentieth century aiming to partially map their territorial dislocations both in past and present, as well as the intersocietal relations established with the Mbayá-Guaicuru people and finally exploring the role of its pottery as a material evidence that consolidates them their own existence today

-- The present work offers an ethnolinguistic study of three Afro-Paraguayan communities: Emboscada (founded in the 18th century by free blacks), and Camba Cua and Laurelty (founded in the 19th century byfree black soldiers who arrived with the Uruguayan general José Gervasio Artigas). The data confirm the existence of linguistic structures that link Afro-Paraguayans with other Afro-descendent communities, such as the Chota Valley (Ecuador), the Yungas (Bolivia), Sama-Las Yaras (Peru), Chocó (Colombia), and Helvécia (Brazil).

All of his literary legacy can be characterized as a crossing on the borders of genres and experimental language, and has in his Mar paraguayo (1992) one of the main representatives of this traffic across borders. Thus, the hypothesis is that both the speech of the protagonist and the whole structure of the novel point to a hybridism of genres and towards the border, understood as a point to which the limits converge and get confused. This hypothesis is confirmed and reflects the process of artistic creation which, in turn, is not unheard of in terms of the paths that have been chosen for the construction of this novel, but it reflects something of a trend and thus establishes meaningful dialogues with other works in a constant disruption and re- reading of literary and cultural tradition.

The present study aims at deepening the studies regarding the final period of the event known in Brazilian history as the Paraguayan War, particularly from its the end in 1868 and after the departure of Caxias - a period that includes the command of Count d'Eu, by the end of the campaign in 1870. Based on this framework, the study deals with the structure established concerning the logistics employed by Brazilian military land forces to meet the demands of the war effort. Thus, we aim at providing a better understanding of the military structure organized by the Empire to meet the needs of the war as well as a broader view of this structure at end the conflict. Factors such as the military command of d'Eu, the diplomatic and sometimes even military role played by José Maria Paranhos (soon to become Viscount of Rio Branco) and their interaction before the logistic troubles faced by Brazilian land forces in order to put an end to the conflict were considered. Such logistic barriers affected and jeopardized either the intensity and military action strategies or diplomatic efforts of Brazilian representatives, reflecting remarkably the political dynamics of the Empire throughout this period

During the 19th Century, several adventurers, mainly European, roamed the Brazilian territory, producing countless reports which are used as sources for the study of the land, people and nature or the time, since such travel literature deals with the experience of contact. Such reports are not only sources of information about Brazil, but also indicate important interpretative lines of Brazilian history. As such, this work tries to study one of the most noteworthy scholars of the 19th Century, Richard Francis Burton, born in 1821 in Torquay e deceased in 1890, in Trieste. This voyager lived during a very important time in politics for his country, the Reign of Queen Victoria of England. He was a military, diplomat, scientist, naturalist, author translator, and so on, and a known explorer of the African continent, where he involved himself in daredevil expeditions beside John Hanning Speke, being at the center of the debates about the source of the Nile. In Brasil, Burton was the British consul at Santos, between 1865 and 1869, writing several important voyage reports and a narrative on the Paraguayan war and the Brazilian context of the time, in the form of letters, sent to an anonymous character: “Z...”. In the work Letters from the Battlefield of Paraguay, published in London (1870), Richard Burton gathered 27 letters, the first one written in Montevideo in August 11, 1868, and the last one written in em Buenos Aires in April 21, 1869, after he visited the battlefields twice (from August 17 to September 5, 1868) and from April 4 to 18, 1869). We will analyze the peculiar trajectory of this traveler, as well as his “social place”, his reports which go beyond picturesque observation and are historical sources for studies about the people, landscape, nature, social relations, conflicts, etc. We will study the interests he had which made him travel through Brasil and the Plata region, where the Paraguayan war took place, as well as his representations and relationships established in these territories.

This thesis seeks to identify the main intellectual and political objectives of Juan Natalicio González (1897-1966), a Paraguayan writer who played an extensive variety of activities (journalist, essayist, editor, politician, Colorado Partys member and diplomatic). From the analysis of their biographies, their own texts (autobiography, essays and magazine Guarania) and the study done by historians we consider that Gonzalez partially achieved his political ambitions, because he became president of his country but he was deposed and did not return to play a leading role in the national political scene. He succeeded in spreading and consolidation of the revisionist interpretation of Paraguayan history, after participating in various groups of Latin American intellectuals who widely reproduced his version of the history.

This work is linked to the History Teaching and Historical Knowledge research line of the Graduate Program in History at the Federal University of Paraíba, which has Historical Culture as area of concentration. Our goal was to analyze, in a comparative study, the approaches on previously selected issues of History textbooks, produced in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, concerning a specific subject: the war in Paraguay. Considering the debate about this theme carried on the academic level and in the light of new historiographical studies, we emphasized two moments for the analysis of textbooks, the first of which falls on those whose authors (Nelson Piletti and Joana Neves & Elza Nadai) wrote at least since the 1980s, submitting to periodic reviews their works which were published and used until the late 1990s meaning that these school textbooks have passed through the period of the so-called revisionism and neorevisionism regarding the historiography of the Paraguayan War. We stress that, precisely because of the comparative character of the study, we used the 1980s and 1990s editions of the these works. The second stage of analysis investigates the book of the professor Gilberto Cotrim, in editions of 1999 and 2005. In the 1990s, when the first edition of Cotrim was published, the discussions about the Paraguayan War between the so-called revisionist and neorevisionists were intensified. Therefore we attempted to correlate such subject in the selected textbooks, in its various editions, with the bibliography and academic production of the time, and observe the historiographical influences for its production, noticing if there were changes in the concepts of the text and in the interpretation of the authors of textbooks, as a consequence of the historiographical renewal and revisionism, especially of those concepts which concern the causes of conflict. For this purpose, we discussed various aspects that support this objective, such as the transformations in the very materiality and design of textbooks over the issues analyzed, without, however, having the intention to deepen or focus on this latter discussion.

Paraguayan guarani is an amerindian living language spoken by most of the population of paraguay ( approximately four million people ). This language belongs to the linguistic family of tupi-guarani which prevailed over vast areas of south america, from the atlantic coast to the andes, when the conquest of this continent started. At the present time this language is one of the official languages in the republic of paraguay where it coexists with spanish, the second official language of this bilingual state. Guarani is mainly a language of oral tradition. It draws its sources from the different prehispanic tupi-guarani dialects, as well as from "guarani jesuitico", language standardized from the 16th century by the jesuits in their "reductions" and finally from colonial guarani, common language used by the new half-breed population. The roads that led paraguayan guarani from an oral to a written language were riddled with great battles in order to survive. For five centuries it has been alternating between a falling back to an oral language and the investing in writing. This enabled guarani to adapt itself to various situations in taking in some elements of spanish without modifying the essential structures of the language. Guarani of paraguay, the first amerindian language spoken by nonindians is reaching the status of an official state language on the american continent. Nowdays it is facing a new challenge: becoming again a literary language able to cover the spaces of communication of the modern world

This thesis is a study of the transformation of a region of Paraguay thought of as extremely peripheral and under-populated. The primary goal is to understand the economic actors and strategies involved in these processes of territorial construction, and to link them to specific territorial configurations. The analysis is specifically interested in the major transformations in the use of productive resources in recent years (1998-2008). With its geographical, and more specifically its use of geo-historical and geo-economic, the study was developed within a theoretical framework centered on the concepts of space and territory. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with different groups of socioeconomic actors from the region, aimed at understanding the logic of their economic activities, their ties, articulations and different modes of occupying, exploiting and organizing space. In the end, the thesis reveals the conjuncture of social, economic, productive, commercial and integrative transitions that transformed the territorial structure of the Chaco, turning it from a forgotten periphery before 1990, into a group of active and networked territories by 2008. These phenomena were reinforced by the construction of continent-wide corridors for regional physical integration. Through spatial fragmentation and specialization, the Chaco gave way to several Chacos, substantially modifying the territorial configuration of both the region and Paraguay as a whole

The focus of this study is the Paraguayan educational reform of 1944 during the period from 1990 to 1998. The analysis is based on the premise that every reform occurs in response to a social need, thus, the effort focuses on gauging what issue this reform method of education sought to resolve. The conclusion recorded through document and bibliographic research highlighted that the materiality of educational precariousness of the nation was real, however, the planning, elaboration and implementation of the reform process had its development and execution compromised and restricted, mostly due to the external interference, which does not constitute as a national identity, a priori, to contemplate the expectations and needs of the nation. Therefore, it was part of a set of measures designed in accordance with the interests of the USA, which imposed on education its adequacy with the development demands of capitalist society aligned with the neoliberal globalization.

In Paraguay, from the 2000s, a reconfiguration of the urban network "from below" occurs through the growth of a multitude of small towns (for each, their population is between ten and thirty thousand inhabitants). Despite their small size, they diversify their activities and have functions that allow them to extend their radius of influence. As a result, the cities in question complement and reinforce an "intermediate" category of the national urban network whose components are still largely unknown. The activation of these centralities is not the result of voluntarist policies of spatial planning, but of the forces and inertia of the market. However, while the Paraguayan society projects itself into the city and aspires to a city life style, the economy of the country is not generating enough jobs. The current growth of intermediate cities is indicative of the deep social changes taking place in Paraguay and provides a glimpse of the challenges that lie ahead and, therefore, where public action will be needed
