Resumen
Paterae cover approximately 2% of the surface of Io, Jupiter’s volcanically active moon. To understand the formation of these volcano-tectonic depressions we created a geologic map of a key region and compared this map with experimental models for Io paterae. Our mapping region is Tupan Patera, a patera that has experienced recent activity and is a detected hot spot. We identified four primary types of geologic materials: plains, patera floors, flows, and diffuse deposits. We constructed an experimental model to test previous suggestions that paterae may form as volatiles in the silicate crust are vaporized by rising magma, creating instability, and subsequent collapse. The apparatus is a scaled model that uses sand (silicate crust analog), ice or snow (volatile analog), a hotplate (magma chamber analog), and a moveable paddle (to simulate extension). Our experimental collapse features exhibit many characteristics of paterae on Io, such as “islands,” terraces, straight margins, and steep scarps. Our model suggests that the role of volatiles in Io’s crust is a significant part of paterae formation.Comparative studies between our map and model show it is possible Tupan is an emerging lava lake or one in a state of quiescence. Our studies have also culminated in the completion of a theoretical cross section for the geologic history of Tupan Patera. This cross section displays a sequence of events including the rise of magma as it preferentially volatilizes sulfurous layers in the crust, subsequent thinning, instability, and collapse, the likelihood of the patera floor sinking as a stoped block, and the more recent flow and diffuse deposits. This study gives some insight to the general formation of paterae on Io.

It has been believed that patria was an inherently civic or political concept, being interpreted as indicating citizenship or the state in which citizenship was held. Thus, it has been regarded by some as synonymous with res publica. This thesis revaluates our understanding of patria in the Roman world by examining its conceptualisation, function and nature in Latin literature and inscriptions. This thesis reveals how patria was a complex and multifaceted conceptual embodiment of collective identity; that its membership was broad, pertaining to men and women, free and freed, as well as evidence that suggests it even may have extended to slaves; that it was territorially ambiguous, being interpreted contemporaneously as corresponding to urban or regional geographical spaces; that it commanded a significant degree of affection and loyalty from its members; that it was prominent in the presentation of individual moral and political character, and in the presentation of imperial regimes; and finally how there was no single, all-embracing concept for the Roman Empire as a whole. This thesis also shows how patria was not a static concept. Instead, its conceptualisation shifted according to changes in the wider political or cultural context. In Chapter One, I consider how patria was understood, defined and recognised. In Chapter Two, I look at the function of patria in the writings of Cicero and its relationship to Roman republican politics. In Chapter Three, I examine the role of patria within the cultural context of the Augustan principate as a medium of Roman unity post-civil war. In Chapter Four, I consider how patria was used to define and understand the Augustan principate and the regime of Septimius Severus. Finally, in Chapter Five, I assess the truth behind the idea that there was a single all-embracing concept of patria for the peoples of the Roman Empire.

Nas primeiras décadas do século XX a escola pública ao lado de outras instituições, como a igreja, era responsável, especialmente nas regiões de imigrantes, pela promoção da unidade nacional. Esta instituição, analisada na perspectiva de um projeto político de educação, foi arquitetada para formar o caráter das novas gerações imprimindo um nacionalismo sadio pelos princípios da educação cívica e moral. Pelo ensino primário as crianças eram educadas para serem bons filhos, para amarem a pátria, cultivarem as tradições de seu país e serem futuros trabalhadores conscientes de seus deveres de cidadão-patriota. Este trabalho analisou o discurso ideológico de amar, defender e servir à Pátria na coleção de livros de leitura organizada pelo intelectual-educador republicano Henrique da Silva Fontes nos anos de 1920 e 1930. A Série Fontes foi o primeiro conjunto de livros de leitura para o ensino primário organizado e editado no Estado de Santa Catarina. Educando crianças para o sentimento de pertença, para serem brasileiros, a Série auxiliou o governo catarinense, sobretudo no período do governo do Interventor Federal Nereu Ramos, na constituição e afirmação dos semióforos nacionais, como o hino e a bandeira brasileira.

L'analyse du discours sur la famille et la parenté aristocratiques permet d'étudier les rapports entre autoreprésentation aristocratique, représentation cléricale et réalité sociale. La famille est un phénomène historiquement construit par la pratique et le discours. Elle apparaît comme un groupe cognatique structuré par la consanguinité, polarisé par la cellule conjugale. Les aristocrates s'autoreprésentent et mettent en pratique leur parenté vécue selon leurs besoins ; les c1ercs composent des récits interprétatifs et souvent moralisateurs appuyés sur des modèles bibliques et une vision providentielle du monde. La Chronique de Thietmar de Mersebourg donne accès à la conscience de soi d'un individu, évêque membre d'un groupe parental aristocratique et montre comment s'articulent et sont vécues ces différentes identités. La mémoire, l' oubli et les affects des auteurs et des acteurs interviennent dans la composition de chaque texte, qui défend une interprétation orientée de la réalité.

Este trabalho se propõe a estudar as ruínas do Pai enquanto estrutura patriarcal em decadência. Tem como foco central Lavoura arcaica a partir da reminiscência benjaminiana enquanto fundadora de uma cadeia de tradição. Essa sabedoria passa a ser negada e a estrutura inatingível do pai começa a desmoronar. Nesse contexto, o pai é tratado como ruína: Pedro Páramo. Um novo ciclo, um novo desejo passa a ser analisado. A busca pelo pai traça um novo perfil, mas ele só permanece como ruína. O desejo dá sustentação para o que virá a seguir: Esse obscuro objeto do desejo, analisado sob diferentes aspectos.

Abstract : This paper aims to examine the ruins of the Father as the patriarchal structure in decay. Its central focus Lavoura arcaica from benjaminiana reminiscence as founder of a tradition chain. The knowledge becomes denied and the father's unattainable structure begins to crumble. In this context, the father is analyzed as ruin: Pedro Páramo. A new cycle, a new desire can be analyzed. The search for the father gives a new profile, but it only remains as a ruin. The desire gives support to what comes next: Esse obscuro objeto do desejo, analyzed under different aspects.

Propone estudiar el concepto “Patria”, en un período largo que corre desde la década de 1730 hasta 1866, a fin de conocer la historia de dicho concepto; es decir, sus mutaciones semánticas, las relaciones de estas con los contextos políticos y los empleos del concepto por los actores históricos. Nuestro afán será, pues, rastrear las transformaciones de “Patria” desde el temprano siglo XVIII hasta la vigencia de la segunda generación liberal peruana; es decir, presentaremos el creciente enriquecimiento del concepto o, por el contrario, su pérdida de significados y ascendente abstracción, al mismo tiempo que su politización y democratización. El rastreo de los significados, su aplicación y formas de empleo por los diversos actores nos brindará no solo claridad sobre la historia del propio concepto, sino además que servirá para darnos luces sobre los cambios de la historia política del Perú en el período que se estudia. La investigación busca convertirse en un aporte en el conocimiento histórico del vocabulario político de los actores históricos de tardío período colonial y el temprano período republicano. Se cree que el estudio de los conceptos “clave” que fueron la referencia y las herramientas de concepción del mundo político de los actores en el tránsito de la Colonia a la República es fundamental para conocer la lógica y la racionalidad de las luchas políticas de los actores históricos, empresa considera no ha sido suficientemente abordada. Para comprender los modos cómo los actores se explicaban el pasado y obtenían de él sus experiencias, sus proyectos y sus luchas, resulta fundamental hacer un análisis prolijo de los estratos semánticos de los conceptos que emplearon para la acción política, las formas cómo los aplicaron a la realidad.

Las veladas literarias que organizó Juana Manuela Gorriti en 1876 y 1877 significó un espacio de difusión y discusión, entre hombres y mujeres de letras, acerca del devenir nacional, la situación de la mujer y su función dentro de este, y el cuestionamiento de su educación para potenciar o limitar el cumplimiento de los mandatos de madre y patriota en el progreso de la república. Las mujeres ilustradas disertaron abiertamente sobre dichas cuestiones, aunque, claro está, de forma solapada, pues podrían ser tildadas como ridículas o pedantes. Al respecto, sin perder de vista los trabajos sistemáticos previos acerca de la posición de la mujer frente a los discursos liberales o modernos que se desarrollaron en Argentina y Perú (como los realizados por Cristina Iglesia, Lea Fletcher, en calidad de editoras, y Francine Masiello para el país argentino, y por Francesca Denegri para el caso peruano), la presente tesis tiene como finalidad demostrar que la novela Peregrinaciones de una alma triste (sic) de Juana Manuela Gorriti se separa de las ficciones fundacionales que buscaban construir un proyecto nacional homogéneo y socava las formas decimonónicas de concebirlo, pues en ella se cuestiona los mandatos sociales que exige dicho proyecto e indaga su imposibilidad en los sujetos y espacios marginales. Por ello, la novela esboza una respuesta solapada a los dictámenes que la élite criolla demandaba a la mujer (cuidado de la familia y formadora de los hijos en ciudadanos) y un cuestionamiento a los discursos que intentaban menguar su desarrollo social y ciudadano.

Informe de Seminario para optar al grado de Licenciado en Lengua y Literatura Hispánica mención Literatura.
Enmarcado dentro del segundo ciclo nerudiano, siguiendo a Loyola, Canto General fue escrito entre los años 1938 y 1949. Es uno de los libros más conocidos de Neruda y el que más crítica ha generado, así como también, uno de los más extensos del poeta: consta de 231 poemas, ordenados en quince cantos o secciones, y es además uno de los que Neruda más elaborara. Su primera publicación total fue en México, en el año 1950, y tuvo también una edición clandestina, en Chile ese mismo año, ya que en 1947 el Presidente Gabriel González Videla desató una persecución contra los comunistas al dictar la Ley Permanente de Defensa de la Democracia, más conocida como “Ley Maldita”, lo que provocó que Neruda, como militante Comunista pasara a la clandestinidad, y luego escapara de Chile en el año 1949, para volver recién en 1952.

Este trabajo se propone ahondar en el significado de la noción del “interés superior del menor”, presente en toda discusión jurisdiccional y evidenciar la falta de normas legales que garanticen la debida observancia de ese interés, lo que se desprende, incluso, de la existencia de diversos criterios jurisprudenciales divergentes que se relacionan con la persona del niño, pero principalmente interesa descifrar cómo tal valor es resguardado en todas las causales de pérdida de la patria potestad que contempla el artículo 444 del Código Civil para el Distrito Federal en las que, en varias, es deficientemente regulado y en otras ignorado. Otro aspecto a destacar es que el “interés superior del menor” forma parte de las llamadas “nociones-marco”, particularmente frecuentes en el derecho de familia, las que con su introducción, han provocado una tímida labor del Poder Legislativo, pues deja en manos del juzgador tomar la decisión de acuerdo con la información que surge del caso concreto, es decir, conforme a sus circunstancias de hecho, de lugar y de tiempo. De esta manera se pretenden potencializar adecuadamente las facultades del juez en cuanto a la privación de la patria potestad para que el interés superior del menor abandone su lugar de pura fórmula y se traduzca en una riqueza existencial que oriente de manera preponderante el sentido de las decisiones judiciales en esta materia.

The MSC/NASTRAN finite element computer program and a Cray XMP computer were used to study the modal characteristics of a violin with the Stradivari shape . The violin geometry was modeled using an arcs of circles scheme with PATRAN, a finite element graphics pre/postprocessor program. The violin was modeled in-vacu and with free boundry conditions. Belly, back, sound post, bassbar, neck, bridge, tail-piece, strings, rib linings, end and corner blocks are the components of the model. Mode shapes and frequencies were calculated for free top and back plates, the violin box, and the complete violin system, including the strings . The results obtained from the finite element technique were compared to experimental data from real violins collected by other investigators.

Le pouvoir des Médicis, banquiers apparus sous la république et faits ducs de Toscane en 1530 à˜l'issue d'une guerre contre leur propre patrie, souffre d'un manque de légitimité originel. Quelles sont les solutions que les Médicis vont pouvoir apporter au casse-tête d'une Storia Patria glorieuse, mais devenue dangereuse à˜l'heure du "déclin" ? Comment la dynastie parviendra-t-elle à˜se doter d'une histoire légitimatrice ? La démonstration s'organise en trois étapes : la première fait apparaître la disparition de l'historiographie florentine au "Seicento" en partant de la censure qui lui est imposée et qui révèle ce que les Médicis ont considéré comme relevant du secret de l'Etat. Le second volet de l'analyse s'est attaché à ˜ démontrer comment les Médicis ont porté l'histoire toscane "hors" de Florence et de son paysage républicain. Une dernière partie met à jour l'existence, face au tabou de l'histoire, d'une prolifération des "pratiques historiennes", pratiques non pas tournées vers l'écriture de l'histoire, mais vouées à sa seule connaissance ; en étudiant, pour finir, les lieux de son réinvestissement social, politique, symbolique
The power of the Medici, bankers which appear under the Republic and become dukes of Tuscany in 1530 as a result of a war against their own fatherland, is suffering an original lack of legitimacy. What solutions will they be able to bring to the headache of a glorious, but dangerous during a time of decline, Storia Patria ? How will the dynasty manage to produce a story to found their power on ? Three are the stages of the demonstration : the first one points out the disparition of florentine's historiography during the seicento, after the study of censorship which reveals what the Medici considered as secrets of State. The second stage of the demonstration shows how they bring tuscan history "out of" Firenze and its republican frame. The last part brings to light the existence of proliferating historian practices, which are not bent towards the writing of history, but vowed to its sole knowledge - thus studying the ways and places of its symbolic, politic, and social "reinvestment"

The maintenance, performance, and practice of Mexican music formed part of a resistance effort against cultural, political, economic, gendered, and geographic marginalization throughout the course of the twentieth century in Tucson, Arizona. This project defines iconic, popular Mexican music as música cósmica, a term inspired by José Velasco’s raza cósmica, and which refers to the music’s role as a unifying cultural expression for individuals of Mexican descent in Tucson and other diaspora communities. This project draws from new and archived interviews, newspapers, recorded performances, radio programs, and other ephemera of Tucson’s musical past to outline how la música cósmica formed part of an organic cultural expression of the people of the U.S. southwest, one that informed and was informed by the corpus being developed and promoted out of Mexico City. The process of maintaining la música cósmica in Tucson as a source of collective identity and resistance involved a deep commitment to maintaining musical places, spaces, and talents in the face of political, social, and geographic marginalization, including the physical destruction of Mexican homes and businesses in the name of urban renewal. Community leaders and music teachers viewed the teaching of música cósmica to Tucson youth as part of a social justice educational revolution, yet to teach the music they first had to overcome the internalization of anti-Mexican sentiment that viewed Mexican cultural expressions as inferior and overtly feminine. They reclaimed pride in this marginalized identity, the feminized fatherland or madre patria, through reframing the interpretation of the music as a cultural expression requiring precision, excellence, and that held monetary value. Music teachers employed a commitment to excellence and an insistence on paid performances to transform the perception of the music from that of an expression of inferior culture to one worthy of pride, respect, and admiration. Tucsonans approached the teaching and performing of la música cósmica with a profound sense of duty, one that inspired heroic acts of dedication and united Tucsonans of Mexican descent in spite of otherwise deep and painful divisions over political ideologies, popular tastes, skin color, personal experience, and the process of social change. The deep scar left by urban renewal, neighborhood demolition, and family relocation left many bitter divisions among members of Tucson’s community of Mexican descent. Nonetheless, la música cósmica continued to play a unifying role, and Tucsonans came together across these differences to ensure its survival, and to ensure their own cultural survival in the city´s public narrative as a result. By the 1980s, Tucson boasted numerous youth mariachi programs and hosted the first annual International Mariachi Conference, converting a city that continued to struggle with its collective identity into a global center for the teaching and performing of Mexican music.

Desde el Código Civil de 1.857, la Responsabilidad Parental se encuentra desmembrada en Autoridad Paterna y Patria Potestad, reguladas actualmente en los Títulos IX y X del Libro primero del Código Civil. Por otra parte, en el Derecho Comparado, al igual como ocurría en el Derecho Romano, la Responsabilidad Parental se encuentra unificada, regulándose bajo una misma institución tanto lo personal como la patrimonial. En esta Memoria se hace un estudio de la ya citada institución en el Derecho Romano, en el Derecho Comparado Latinoamericano actual, y en nuestro Código Civil originario, en donde se da una respuesta a la siguiente interrogante: ¿Por qué Andrés Bello excluyó de la Patria Potestad el ámbito personal, sin conceder facultades patrimoniales a la madre? Posteriormente, hay un estudio de la evolución histórica de la institución en el Código Civil, a través de las diversas reformas legales que se han sucedido. Se hace un análisis detallado de las antinomias que existen en nuestra legislación debido a la separación de los aspectos personal y patrimonial. A través de este análisis se construyen los argumentos que existen para unificar la Autoridad Paterna con la Patria Potestad bajo la denominación de Responsabilidad Parental. Para finalizar, en las conclusiones se otorgan algunas ideas para una futura reforma legal en esta materia, que han sido elaboradas teniendo en especial consideración los Tratados Internacionales y el nuevo contenido de la institución.

During the 1930s, Mexico was in the middle of a healing process after three decades of revolutionary turmoil and reform. The outbreak of revolution in 1910 had created friction between various interest groups such as the Church, the labor movement, peasants, industrialists, and politicians. In the following decades, divisions among those groups intensified as the country struggled to resolve revolutionary conflict and, in the process, looked for someone to blame. As World War II approached, divisive domestic conditions prompted Mexican government officials to develop their own internal wartime agenda. World War II became a major turning point in the legacy of the Mexican Revolution. It gave the country an opportunity, for the first time since the revolution, to unite against a common external enemy, and to militarize as a united nation against that enemy. The government-sponsored propaganda campaign became an important tool for reuniting Mexicans. The government took advantage of the unity achieved during World War II to promote a modernization and industrialization program during and after the war. A close examination of wartime propaganda reveals aggressive calls to unity mixed with a subtle promotion of modernity and industrialization. In contrast to outside propaganda produced primarily by the United States, the Mexican government's wartime messages used nationalist rhetoric and symbols to defend the country's internal interests during and after the war. U.S. propaganda promoted the idea of the "American Way of Life," a concept which glorified a middle-class consumer lifestyle, led by the United States. While U.S. wartime messages frequently provoked resentment among Mexicans, they also largely succeeded in creating a demand for the consumer goods advertised in the propaganda campaign. Avila Camacho used that demand to solidify popular support for his industrialization agenda. By the end of the war, divisive revolutionary factions that had dominated in the 1930s found themselves significantly weakened by the government's wartime measures. Through a combination of policy and propaganda, President Manuel Avila Camacho put together a wartime program that allowed him to unite the country against a common, external enemy and to pursue an aggressive industrialization program. Most importantly, World War II allowed him to justify his industrialization program as a new direction for the Mexican Revolution.

The work draws upon the centrality of the idea of Nation in the wider context of globalisation, with football as the primary analytical focus. The study is based in an historical framework beginning with the moment of the foundation of the national football narratives in Argentina, and culminating in the 1998 World Cup in France. Football's contribution to the construction of national identity began in the 1920s, alongside the growth of formal schooling, and these new influences affected the nature of citizenship in different ways. In 1945, in the context of Peronism, the sport spectacle was inaugurated as a national ritual: it confirmed the expansion of the nation and the inclusion of new popular subjects. The post-Peronism years were marked by a modernisation process that, in the realm of sport, consolidated an aggressive and paranoid nationalist discourse. Since 1973, the growing politicization of the society displaced the discussions towards the political sphere, leaving the stadium as a space for partial epics only. Five years later, however, the patriotic representation in football reached its summit, due to the victory in the 1978 World Cup, in the context of the - repressive - suppression of political rights by the dictatorship. This apogee of nationalism was also fuelled by the growing power of the mass media, and the emergence of Diego Maradona. He had a major symbolic influence during the 1980s, when the association between football and television became central in the configuration of the spectacle; the figure of Maradona was the catalyst for the patriotic trope, cementing the separate strands of nationalist discourse in a climactic celebration of Argentinean national identity. After the decline and fall of Maradona, the central question posed in this work is: can football work as a post-modern substitute of the traditional institutions which produced nationality? This work, drawing upon media archives, contemporary sources and a series of in-depth qualitative surveys, postulates that football is not a cultural machine, a producer of nationality; but that the most powerful and influential such cultural machine is television. And football would be just one of its genres.

The research herein presents an analysis of the evolution of José Martí’s racial thought throughout his written work. The principle focus of this investigation is to establish a comprehensive understanding of Martí’s racial ideas and to explain how the author developed the anti-racist principles demonstrated in his final years of life. The thesis proposes that José Martí’s ideas regarding race relations were shaped through a gradual process defined by his experiences of exile. To illustrate this position, I present a chronological mapping of his political and racial ideas, ranging from his early writings as a youth (1869), when he established his anti-colonial position against Spain, stretching forward through the end of his life, when Martí’s staunch position against racism was most visible in the context of his writings (1892-1895) in preparation for the war of Cuban independence. This research also reflects on how the Cuban author’s use of race and racism functioned as a principle node to address and promote change concerning political and social contradictions then present in Cuba, Hispanic America and the United States. To understand the process of the construction of José Martí’s racial position, texts he published during his stay in countries with a large indigenous presence, such as Mexico and Guatemala (1875-1878), are analysed. Additionally, the articles, essays and chronicles written by the author on the subject of race during his fifteen-year stay in the United States (1880-1895) are examined, as racial conflict was a prominent issue in political and national debates of the time. The thesis also focuses on the period of organisation and political activism when Martí presented his model for Cuba as a patria libre, defined by the heightened participation of Blacks and mullatos. My examination also focuses on Martí’s 1891 proposal to adopt mestizaje as a regional identity, taking into account the ideological environment of the late eighteen hundreds, which was dominated by Positivism and Liberalism in Hispanic American governments and by economic expansionism in the United States. This study thus provides an approach to understanding the development of José Martí’s racial thinking over the course of his lifetime, demonstrating how his racial ideas were defined and influenced by national and regional contexts, as well as by dominant ideologies, and proposes that Martí’s views regarding race came about as a result of the author’s intellectual and experiential progression, as opposed to being the result of a lifelong anti-colonial stance.

Bohemian-born Baroque composer, Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679 --1745) and his music have been little known until recently. During his career in Dresden as a court church composer from 1710 until his death in 1745, Zelenka composed over150 sacred choral compositions.The three masses in the collection entitled Missae ultimae (ZWV 19 -- 21) were written toward the end of his life, between 1740 and 1741. Like his other masses, these three are cantata masses, in which the texts of the mass ordinary are divided, and set as separate movements.In each movement of each mass, Zelenka uses various forms, and compositional techniques in two different styles. Some movements are written in stile antico featuring imitative or fugal techniques. Other movements are written in stile moderno, and can be divided into two categories: choruses with orchestral ritornellos, and arias for solo voice or soli voices. Of great interest, however, is the skill with which Zelenka uses these two different styles within a complete setting of the mass ordinary, or even within single movements, creating stile misto in Missae ultimae by matching specific musical approaches to the character of the different texts.I will first discuss various musical forms and styles in the three masses of Missae ultimae. In Chapter 4, I will focus on the first mass, Missa Dei Patris (ZWV 19), since this work shows more stylistic contrast between movements than the other two masses. In Chapter 4, I will outline the compositional techniques of each movement. For the sake of consistency, the titles of each movement have been capitalized as published in Das Erbe Deutscher Musik -- Bands 93 (1985), 100 (1989), and 101 (1989) -- of Breitkopf und Hartel.

On twenty-two feedgrounds in western Wyoming, elk (Cervus elaphus) are provided with supplemental feed throughout the winter. Brucellosis seroprevalence of feedground elk is 26% whereas other elk in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem have historically had a brucellosis seroprevalence of 2-3%. The aggregation of elk during peak transmission allows brucellosis to persist in the feedground populations. In addition to creating the opportunity for disease transmission, the aggregation of elk on feedgrounds may have detrimental physiological effects. Studies have shown that chronically high stress hormone concentrations can suppress the immune system and lead to increased disease susceptibility. Potential stressors on the feedgrounds include high densities, large group sizes and aggressive social interactions. In this study I investigated how factors associated with supplemental feeding affect stress hormone levels, as indexed by fecal glucocorticoid levels, in elk on feedgrounds and elk on native winter range. I also worked with managers to experimentally alter the feeding distribution on the feedgrounds to examine how feeding density affects stress hormone levels and aggression rates. Results show that elk on feedgrounds have stress hormone levels 31% higher than elk on native winter range (Welch's t₂₇.₂₃=2.39, p=0.024). Experimental reduction of feed density did not have an effect on stress hormone level or aggression rates. But note the relationship between fGCs and local densities here. Although the feeding treatments did appear to reduce local feeding densities,s this effect was not significant and was small relative to the large differences in density among sites. Regardless as to the cause of the high stress hormone levels seen in supplementally fed elk, the feedgrounds are creating an epidemiological setting for disease transmission and a physiological state that may increase susceptibility to disease. The impact of these stress hormone concentrations on disease susceptibility remains unknown, but may be an important driver of disease dynamics in these elk populations.

El título hace alusión al grito del grupo nacionalista Movimiento Cívico Nacional Patria y Libertad, fundado el 10 de septiembre de 1970 con el específico propósito de “promover la elección de Alessandri en el Congreso”, para que éste luego renunciara, y así promover “un nuevo proceso eleccionario donde la ciudadanía debería dirimir entre democracia o marxismo”. A través de un discurso marcado por la decadencia y la descomposición del sistema político nacional, sus miembros analizaban la “conveniencia de crear un movimiento independiente de partidos políticos que sirviera de elemento aglutinador de una opinión pública contraria a Allende que carecía de conducción.”1 El descontento de los sectores nacionalistas que representaban fue llevado al papel y a las calles en un intento por desestabilizar al gobierno de la Unidad Popular, el llamado fue a la movilización de todos y cada uno de los grupos sociales que se sintieran ajenos a la corrupción de la política. Observamos en cada intervención, el deseo de “depurar” el sistema político llevando al extremo las críticas y preparando el camino para un gobierno de unidad nacional que borre las diferencias de clases sociales, entendido como un concepto extranjero. El discurso no es exclusivo de éste Movimiento en particular, sino que podemos extenderlo a la derecha en general, al conservadurismo en sus representantes políticos.

Resumo: Esta tese analisa os debates sobre problemas lingüísticos no Brasil do Segundo Reinado e da República Velha. Inseridos em seu tempo, esses debates mantinham estreitos contatos com as discussões sobre raça, cultura popular, língua nacional, regionalismo e nacionalismo literário, bem como com as teorias da lingüística européia e norte-americana,entre outros temaso Neste contexto, as idéias lingüísticas adquiriram significado social, e os demais temas que mobilizavam os homens de letras e cientistas ganharam novas interpretações com respeito ao problema da identidade nacional. Essa interação envolveu um amplo campo de pensadores, desde literatos diletantes de província, até os grandes intelectuais do Rio de Janeiro, levando a várias conseqüências. O indigenismo foi fortemente influenciado pela escolha da língua geral colonial como fator de atração dos índios. A ideologia imperial patemalista de integração social pacífica, calcada numa mitologia romântica recebeu justificativa na identificação do tupi como o grande idioma indígena brasileiro, resultado não só de estudos lingüísticos, mas do lugar da língua tupi na literatura. As noções de raças e de seus papéis na formação nacional foram também tributárias desse movimento, ao qual se acrescem os estudos sobre os brasileirismos e os falares regionais, nos quais a existência de elementos indígenas, africanos e portugueses embasou o questionamento sobre a existência de um dialeto ou de uma língua brasileira. Por outro lado, a forte presença de uma apologia da língua portuguesa mostrou que a língua também foi vista como uma resposta positiva para as teorias raciais estrangeiras que identificavam na formação racial brasileira a razão do atraso nacional, uma vez que permitia uma saída cultural por meio da identidade latina daquele idioma. Por fim, as idéias sobre cultura urbana, particularidades regionais e marcas raciais se juntaram através de um interesse pela representação na literatura, na dialetologia, na criminalística e no desenho humorístico de vários tipos de linguagens populares, criando uma imagem homogênea de uma língua não-culta tipicamente brasileira
Abstract: This thesis analyses the debate on Second Reign and Old Republic Brazil linguistic issues, which bore dose contact with discussions on race, popular culture, national language, and literary regionalism and nationalism. These issues were as well in a context of widespread European and North American linguistic theories, among others. In this context, linguistic ideas acquired social meaning and the remained subjects that interested writers and scientists were reinterpreted in relation with national identity. A large number of intellectuals, from provincial novelists to Rio de Janeiro great literati, were involved in this process, resulting, in consequence, in many important trends. The choice of a lingua geral (Indian lingua franca) to attract Indian Nations was a major trend in Brazilian Indigenism. Imperial patemalistic ideology of peaceful social integration, based on romantic mythology, was justified by the identification of Tupi as the main Brazilian native language in result not only of linguistic researches, but also of the role of Tupi in literature. Notions of race and its importance to national identity derived from this historical frame as well, to which were connected studies on Brazilian and provincial vocabularies, full of African, Indian and Portuguese elements, giving way to the question on whether there was a Brazilian dialect or language. Besides, a high praise of Portuguese proved that language was seen as a positive response to foreign racial theories, which linked Brazilian backwardness to its racial formation, since Portuguese Latin identity could provide a cultural path out of it. Finally, ideas on urban culture, regional specifications, and ethnicity were gathered through the interest on criminology, dialectology, cartoon and literature, where various kinds of popular language were depicted. This created a homogeneous image of it as the typical non-literate Brazilian language

Resumo: Esta tese propõe reler e interpretar a obra e a experiênciade letrados riograndenses que pretenderam integrar modos de representar uma identidade peculiar para sua província/estado com modelos de história e literatura nacionais do Brasil no século XIX. O estudo pretende mostar também como estas idéias foram divulgadas por meio de uma intensa atuação político-pedagógica para a formação da "consciência de nacionalidade" entre as elites políticas riograndenses, com especial atenção à atuação e obra do professor Apollinario Porto Alegre. Discute-se ainda no trabalho o uso das narrativas e símbolos identitários nos conflitos do início do período republicano, assim como as ambigüidades que contribuíram para a consolidação das noções de identidade "gaúcha" como tradição e de identidade "regional" como modo de pertencimento à "nação" brasileira
Abstract: The purpose of the present thesis is to reread and interpret the work and experíences of literate men from Rio Grande do Sul which intended to join together ways to represent a peculiar identity to their southem province/State and models of history and national literature in XIXth century Brazil. Another objective of this study is to demonstrate how these identitary ideas have been spread thanks to a intense political and pedagogic activism in order to build the "conciousness of nationality" among Rio Grande's political elite, with particular emphasis to the teacher Apollinario Porto Alegre's work. The thesis also discusses the use of narratives and identitary symbols within the conflicts that took part at the beginning of the republican períod, as well as the ambiguities that contríbuted to the consolidation of the notion of the "gaúcho" identity as a tradition and to the notion of "regional" identityas a way of belonging to the Brazilian "nation"
